NYBT: KRod and the Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 9, 2008 3:24 pm

According to Andrew Marchand, at his blog for ESPN 1050, the agent for Francisco Rodriguez thinks that the Mets, Cardinals, Tigers, Dodgers and Angels will seriously pursue his client.

Marchand reports that Rodriguez will seek a five-year deal worth roughly $75 million.

Speaking of Rodriguez, to watch today’s edition of New York Baseball Today, during which Chris Cotter and I talk about whether the Mets will have interest, click play below:

If the Mets sign K-Rod, it will be a HUGE mistake.

    • Steve in DC says:

Agreed. His performance is sure to decline after this year.

      • zen says:

of course, it will decline. there is nowhere to go, but down when you have the most saves in the history of baseball.

        k-rod better be a met

        • Gary Busey says:

          This.

If he performs at a level below his 2008 stats, that’s still plenty of room for improvement over the game of Russian roulette that is our current closing situation.

        • Ryn05 says:

No where to go but down?

Please don’t tell me you think he’s the best closer in the game, being the best and having the most opportunities is a different thing.

    • CaseStreet says:

Why, because he’s young and the best reliever out there? Did you say the same thing about Santana?

Santana’s numbers were decreasing a bit last year, just like K-Rod’s are this year. That doesn’t mean they aren’t the best out there and that the Mets shouldn’t try to sign him.

    • starz31 says:

I’m not so sure about giving him 5 yrs…4 is better IMO…maybe not much of a difference but less guaranteed money I guess.

Can’t say its a huge mistake…It should be seriously considered though (one way or another). we will need a closer.

      • Xavier22 says:

I think 5/75 is probably a trial balloon - in much the same way Bora$ talked about a 10 year/200M deal for Beltran initially.

If the Mets can get him down to 4 years and $50-60M, they should jump all over it.

    • So who should close teams for a 1/2 veteran team with a few more years to contend with the current group? I understand the Red Sox went with Papelbon as a youngster, but do you really think Kunz has Papelbon stuff at this point?

This team needs a reliable closer, which K-Rod is.

    • nydre78 says:

There is no way I would give a closer $15 a year for 5 years

  2. LarryFlint says:

  3. LarryFlint says:

instead of krod who will lose his arm soon, why not brian fuentes?

also matt whats with the ads? jeeze

SIGN DEREK LOWE, OLLIE, DELGADO, AND FUENTES!

    • Dirtysanchez says:

i think the mets should make a play for krod and if it gets out of control..fuentes would be the logical back up..

    • Dafatone80 says:

K-Rod’s not throwing many more innings this year than he usually does.

He has 67 appearances and 61.1 innings pitched.

Past three seasons he’s thrown 67.1, 73, and 67.1. Before that (as a setup man) he had 2 seasons of 80+ innings.

He will have a few more appearances this year than usual. 67 so far, past seasons have been 64, 69, 66, 69, 59.

So a little more work, maybe, but it’s not like he’s throwing tons more than he usually does.

I like Derek Lowe and Ollie. If we can get CC instead of Lowe, great, but it’s not happening. I think K-Rod will be too much money, but we need someone, and Fuentes won’t be cheap either.

  4. Coolpapabell says:

I do not think the Cards, and the Tigers could out spend us, and the Dodgers don’t like to spend money while the Angels could be a real threat.

  5. CitizenSnips says:

People talk about K-Rod’s loss of velocity but isn’t his bread and butter the offspeed pitches?

  6. kingrw says:

wow that andrew marchand really brings the goods.

he found out that the agent of the player believes the teams with the most money in baseball that don’t have a closer will be interested.

    fascinating.

  7. ksuth says:

Why are people saying to sign Delgado when he’s under contract? They just have to pick up his extension.

  8. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

This is hilarious, who gave everyone on this comment board medical degrees? How can you possibly know that a 26 year old closer about to enter his prime with a career K/IP well over one is about to blow out his arm?

    • ksuth says:

“Because he throws violently.” -Joe Schmo M.D.

You can look at any pitcher and say don’t sign him, they’re going to blow out their arm. You know what? It happens when you throw hard(Billy Wags), and even when you don’t (Glavine). The repetitive motion of throwing a baseball is going to wear on anyone. Chances are if you throw the ball enough you’re going to hurt yourself…

      Curt Schilling
      John Smoltz
      Wagner
      Glavine
      Pedro
      El Duque
      …should I keep going?

      • Dafatone80 says:

Just remember, the biggest thing about Mark Prior was how his mechanics were so flawless that he’d never get hurt.

        • starz31 says:

according to Tim Lincecum his mechanics were why he got hurt.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

I read that too. Turns out Prior’s “flawless” mechanics were actually very flawed for two reasons (I can’t remember the two mechanical flaws). The scouts just dropped the ball regarding Prior.

        • starz31 says:

It was something to do with his torque. He leads too much with his chest and that puts too much stress on the shoulder and elbow. All his velocity is born from his shoulder and arm. Lincecum leads first with his left shoulder and then drives and almost slings the ball with his right shoulder…his velocity is created from all his body movements and not concentrated directly from his right arm. = less strain on the arm.

        • coach says:

Today’s pitchers are babied due to how much they cost. Baseball today is the same game as it was when guys like Seaver and Ryan pitched they only real difference is how much they throw on the side between starts.

The game has changed because of much it cost to sign premier guys, a guy like Ollie would probably be a 150 pitch a game guy in the 70’s and 80’s now he’s lucky if he gets through 5+ and is going to be looking for $12-$15 mil per?

Bring back the days when pitchers pitched, throw some figgin innings boys and your arms will be stronger.

For those who are ignorant and think Krod is being overused this season.
“And all that talk about Rodriguez being overused by Angels manager Mike Scioscia has little or no merit. He’s on pace to throw 69 innings this season, which is about six innings fewer than his career average and much fewer than the 86 and 84 innings he pitched in 2003 and 2004, respectively.
Rodriguez has been helped by the fact that he hasn’t pitched more than one inning in any appearance and hasn’t pitched more than three days in a row at any point in the season. ”
How does that sound for those of you who say that the Angles are pitching him until his arm falls off? In fact you could say that he is being rested for the playoffs.

And this for those who want to complain about velocity. He decreased it himself to gain more control and have less of a violent delievery.
K-Rod’s new delivery a balancing act
          04/03/2008 1:20 PM ET
          By Lyle Spencer / MLB.com
MINNEAPOLIS — There is something subtly different in Francisco Rodriguez’s delivery. It’s no longer rated “V” for violent.
Acknowledging that too much movement is never a good thing for a pitcher, K-Rod has taken steps to alleviate stress on his body by adopting a more compact delivery. The primary focus is on keeping his left leg tighter and softening his landing on his left ankle, which has recently given him problems at times.

        • kistics says:

How do you explain the fact that his K/BB ratio went down with loss of velocity? Clearly, his stuff isn’t what it used to be.

        • Wrighton92 says:

He changed his mechanics from being a strikeout pitcher so he can be more efficient. His pitch count is lower than ever this year.

    • KFS says:

You don’t need a MD to figure out there’s a strong likelihood of a fireballing closer injuring his arm in the midst of a 10 year career.

Saito, Putz, Percival, Lidge, Wagner, Rivera, Gagne, Ryan, Street, etc have all dealt with injuries that last more than a brief stint on the 15 day DL. Some of them have never regained their pre-injury form. Is that history something you’re willing to bet $60 mil and a first rounder on?

      • starz31 says:

I wouldn’t throw Rivera in there…he hasn’t suffered one bit.

        • KFS says:

My point was all these guys suffered prolonged injuries at the very least.

Even with Rivera, though he came back as good as usual, he went to the DL three times in 2002 and missed a whole month to begin 2003. Which means, he missed the playoffs when the team needed him the most.

    • kistics says:

He is a 26 year old, but his K/BB ratio has been down significantly from his year past. Combine that with lost velocity, it’s a risky proposition for committing 5 or 7(???) years.

I wouldn’t mind signing him to 3-4 year 11-13 mil per year, but no more than that.

  9. Flushing_is_Burning says:

that shot looks like a republican and democrat debate

  10. lewchr says:

75 million for 5? I’ d rather spend that on Ollie.

  11. lewchr says:

also, any updates on the weather in NYC?

  12. danlx13 says:

forget krod unless hes cheap…get fuentes…then with that money saved get burnett or sheets
johan, sheets/bunrnett, pelf, maine, FA or rookie

imagine what this team would be dealing with if pelf didnt come out good this yr…we would be looking at him as a #5 guy now instead of a #2 or 3

  13. PAPDOG67 says:

$15 mill per season on a closer???? no thanks. Use it to re-sign Ollie or to get another SP in here to replace him and then go get a guy like Fuentes for $ 5 mill/per. Closer is the most over-rated position in baseball.

  14. Drobstad says:

This would be a TERRIBLE signing. The Mets will certainly not persue K-Rod. We need to pay Maine and extending Pelfrey soon would be nice too (see if we can get him at a discount like Wright and Reyes and lock him up long term.) Then with Pedro’s contract money we need to look to sign another starer. The closer position will have to work itself out…
Santana, Pelfrey, Maine… Thats only 3 starters if I count correctly… What do we plan on doing for the other 2?

  15. almar1965 says:

If K-Rod comes here, he will blow more saves than he ever had in his career.

    Why?

Because closers in Mets uniforms don’t mix well.

  16. LongJohnMaine says:

Please no K-Rod, at least not for $15 million a year. Let some stupid team like Houston or the Rangers sign him. Spend the money either on starting pitching.

  17. Gina says:

For what it’s worth, I’m pretty sure he’s lost velocity because he altered his throwing motion so he’d be placing less stress on his arm.

    • Gina says:

That being said I don’t like the idea of spending 15 million, especially over that long of a contract years, on him either.

    • kistics says:

It’s understandable that his velocity went down. But if you combine that with his K/BB ratio going down, it’s a risky proposition for 5 year

  18. Drobstad says:

Thanks Gina… For what it’s worth I’d like to marry a girl who knows interesting facts like that about baseball…

    • dave27 says:

Maybe Matt should form a marketing partnership with match.com for smitten bloggers taken with smart baseball comments attached to girl’s names.

      • Gary Busey says:

Yeah, but then you run into problems like the time that guy hit on the poster who used his daughter’s name for his username. It’s too bait-and-switchy, match.com’s lawyers would never go for it.

  19. mark5674 says:

come on people, when you have a chance to get the best closer in baseball, you do it. and to everyone saying “use it to sign ollie, etc” the mets have A LOT of free money lifted up with alou and el duque off the roster.. plus we have a new stadium.. we have money to spend, spend it and make our bullpen woes into a lockdown.

    • kistics says:

KRod is not the best closer in baseball. He has the most saves this year. But Mariano, Nathan, and Papelbon are better closers than KRod.

  20. koosman says:

Man, is Chris Cotter annoying. He went from hosting sausage races and acting like a buffoon on broadcasts to angrily shouting his opinions at Joe ‘I hate everything about life’ Beningo in just under two years. What a tool.

  21. dave27 says:

I have to say, I’m amazed that with this team in the throes of an intense battle for the division that people can spend this much time talking about 2009.

Maybe it’s just me, but my head is so not on 2009. Leave the 2009 talk to Yankee fans who have no 2008 left to discuss. K-Rod ain’t coming ti the 2008 Mets, so I see no reason to talk about him unti (hopefully) November.

Life goes by too fast as it is. Who the hell cares about handicapping this winter’s free agents? It’s September….Pennant race time. We’ve had more than our share of dead Septembers, so enjoy these while they are here.

  22. Show him the money!

I wouldn’t go more than 5 years or more than $14 mill/year. But I would definitely offer K-Rod a contract like that. If the bidding gets much over that, then Omar should just walk away. But at least he should make some serious offers..

  23. CaseStreet says:

I hate this site because I love it.
