Read: A Pitchers Free Agency Preview

by Brandon Eddy

The crystal ball is working overtime at Rotoworld.com where Matthew Pouliot predicts the destinations of this winter’s free-agent pitchers.

Among the top three starting pitchers, Pouliot projects C.C. Sabathia signing with the Yankees for a cool $176 million over eight years, while the Red Sox sign Ben Sheets for four years, $60 million, and A.J. Burnett landing in St. Louis for five years at $70 million.

As far as Oliver Perez is concerned, Pouliot sees him as one of the more fascinating free agents due to his age and a left-hander with an excellent strikeout rate.

Unfortunately, he has Perez signing with the Angels to the sound of four years at $56 million.

And apparently the Angels have a bottomless pit of cash as Pouliot predicts that Francisco Rodriguez will resign with the Angels for five years at $75 million.

…over $130 million tied up in two pitchers while you still have to pay guys like Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter and quite possibly resigning Mark Teixeira is just crazy…

The only pitcher predicted to sign with the Mets is the resigning of Pedro Martinez for a one-year, $10 million deal.

…i guess the Mets will have no money and/or luck in signing even the Jon Garland’s of the world…

…have fun… this should open up some good debate…

MY prediction?

We sign both Oliver Perez AND Francisco Rodriguez.

Up yours, Roto. :)

rM teM September 9, 2008 at 2:37 pm

and not Pedro

skullkrusher September 9, 2008 at 2:49 pm

absolutely. Why the HELL would the Mets give Pedro $10mm to pitch next year when he hasn’t pitched much at all the past 3 years? I’d love to see Pedro back as a pitching coach or a minor league instructor or something at some point but I don’t think I want him one the field in any playing capacity next year.

DK September 9, 2008 at 3:59 pm

dont 4get not one of these clowns gave us a shot at getting Santana…

janss36 September 9, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Take all this stuff with a grain of salt…

That said, I think have to do for Ollie P. what we did for Kris Benson and overpay to keep him here…

There's Always '09 September 9, 2008 at 2:12 pm

We need OP to stay here. He is too valuable against our division.

K-Rod should be 2nd on that list.

I could see the Yanks and Sawx in a bitter bidding war for Sabathia.

starz31 September 9, 2008 at 2:25 pm

I can only see the sox making one phone call to CC and their interest will end there. They would only enter a bidding war to drive his price up, but they dont or need to sign him. They already have an ace. They have a few gifted young pitchers with MLB success. I feel like they will not get involved with a 7 or 8 yr deal for a SP. I said one phone call b/c if they could get a discount they would be interested, but I dont see why CC would do that.

janss36 September 9, 2008 at 2:54 pm

I can see CC and Burnett to the Yankees… I think they will trade either Kennedy or Hughes for some big name offensive player…

They are going to go crazy because they might miss the playoffs…

We need to sign OP… We need a stabilizing force in the bullpen…

ridethesnake September 9, 2008 at 4:11 pm

OP was great in Pittsburgh then tanked. He was great last year then tanked early this year a little. Now he is great again. I’m not saying he HASN’T turned the corner, but overpaying for him knowing that potential is there, with him a notch below what’s out there, is frustrating. The only thing is, those other guys are injury risks (at least Sheets and AJ) and they too will be overpriced. So because he knows the division I guess we have to roll the dice on him as the second tier guy. It’s just frustrating to pay him top dollar. Hopefully Pelf and Maine and a Niese or Parnell can be great next year and we won’t have to do it again in 2010.

And I am not opposed to Pedro coming back as the 5th starter for one year. After what he does in Game 7 against the Angels I think he’ll deserve it!

zen September 9, 2008 at 2:12 pm

oh g-d…pedro. omar should be fired if he re-signs him.

k-rod to the mets.

the mets have a lot more cash, but the angels have a better owner.

MealTicket September 9, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I also think the Mets should look into the Japanese free-agent pitching crop for next year. Uehara, Kawakami and potentially Yu Darvish might be good additions to the rotation (especially Darvish, who’s not actually a free agent but might request posting).

I just don’t know enough about them other than to say the first two could project to be mid-rotation starters, while Darvish looks to be more on the level of Dice-K.

There are no guarantees, obviously. Someone will take this opportunity to name every single failed Japanese starter (and a few Koreans, too) to prove we should stay away from the Far East.

I disagree.

starz31 September 9, 2008 at 2:28 pm

I would be interested in Darvish. He supposedly is better than Dice-K.

He also has experience in big market… he is THE pitcher in Japan and is marketed extensively. His face is everywhere in Japan, not just in his team’s city. He is treated like a god there.

But if I remember correctly, he has posed nude already in Japan…not really important, but kinda weird. Just goes to show his popularity in Japan.

BillyDeeWilliams September 9, 2008 at 2:37 pm

that might be the oddest tidbit of information i’ve ever seen on here.

starz31 September 9, 2008 at 2:56 pm

just bringing fair and balanced coverage lol

Boscov September 9, 2008 at 2:58 pm

As they always say, if the guy has posed nude in Japan, he can play on my club any day.

starz31 September 9, 2008 at 3:15 pm

who said this? Cleveland Indians? (not sure if anyone gets that)

DK September 9, 2008 at 4:01 pm

haha yeah i rememeber that fruitcake from Clevland

Deadpanwalking September 9, 2008 at 4:04 pm

I don’t care if he stands on the mound wearing a green sequined thong with suede fringe, German WWII-era jackboots, a lobster bib and an over-sized novelty foam cowboy hat. If he’s the best pitcher in Japan, I’m interested.

TheBigStapler September 9, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Darvish will cost the kind of monstrous sum that only the biggest markets (like us) can afford. I don’t see us going after him because we don’t need to another #1 starter. Our rotation is already great.

If Yu Darvish is posted this year (and I don’t actually think that’ll happen) I expect him to get the 3rd best contract after Sabathia and Sheets. Darvish is only 22 and he’s already the best pitcher in Japanese history by a lot. His age 21 ERA is almost 2 full runs lower than Matsuzaka’s and the latter had already pitched almost three times as many professional innings.

What we really need, I think, is Ollie back or somebody of that #2/#3 caliber.

Sidenote, Darvish seems to be getting the Mark Prior treatment with regards to his pitch counts. He may not even surivive to the point he’s MLB ready.

MealTicket September 9, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Not sure his contract will be that great. The posting fee will be astronomical–possibly $100 million.

TheBigStapler September 9, 2008 at 4:13 pm

You’re right, I didn’t take that into account. My general sentiment was that Darvish, if posted, would be the 3rd most coveted long-contract starting pitcher.

BigDaddyKirk September 9, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Let Pedro leave (unless he’ll sign for a year at an incentive-based contract). Go all out for Sabathia, even if it only drives up the price for the Yankees. K-Rod is a must at this point. Bring back Delgado for another year.

Don September 9, 2008 at 2:17 pm

signing pedro for that price would mark the second time omar overpaid for him.

jaydh September 9, 2008 at 2:18 pm

I don’t see it happening, these predictions are a joke except for maybe the CC deal.

starz31 September 9, 2008 at 2:29 pm

second time? well he did over pay the first time…but it was out of necessity. And I have no regrets for it.

chicagometfan September 9, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Did Rotoworld predict Santana getting trade to the Mets last year.?
Take all the predictions for what they are just guesses.

There's Always '09 September 9, 2008 at 2:20 pm

I was all for signing Pedro, but he looks to be done. I could see him closing it out in Miami or Tampa.

Made in the Shea-de September 9, 2008 at 2:20 pm

You think I could get Rotoworld to tell me what I will be ordering for lunch next Thursday? I’d also like to know the sex of my first three grandchildren so I can plan accordingly.

nyleetch2 September 9, 2008 at 2:21 pm

debate? i dunno – in my mind all this really opens up to is the fact that Pouliot is clearly out of his mind. I don’t argue that the Yankees Angels Sox and Cardinals will all push very hard to sign pitching, and may get in a bidding war or two. But the idea the Mets will either lose out or not enter the bidding wars in the first place seems a) a bit out of check with the Mets and Minaya’s more recent history, b) the situation surrounding the Mets rotation and ballclub ie new stadium etc. and c) the fact that Minaya is unlikely to value hitting over pitching and spend the cash on a guy like Teixeira instead of Ollie or a top line guy.
We may have Santana and Pelfrey at the top of the rotation, but with the uncertainty around Maine and Pedro, I find it very very hard to believe Minaya would settle for Pedro and a scrapheap/rookie at the end of the rotation.

rogasm September 9, 2008 at 2:22 pm

I sitll would really like to see Ben Sheets in Queens.

CaseStreet September 9, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Me too. He has a great strikeout ratio.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 2:29 pm

He has been plagued by injuries all his career. I don’t know how much money he would want, but I would not committ too much money in him.

rogasm September 9, 2008 at 3:29 pm

He has been healthy this year and has gone over 200 innings three times in his career, and is on pace to do it again this year. I would be fine giving that guy 10-12MM and resigning Ollie for a little more.

WilletsPoint7 September 9, 2008 at 2:23 pm

No way the Yankees give Sabathia $176 million. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. As for Oliver Perez, I don’t see the Angels giving him that kind of money PLUS the money it will take to re-sign K Rod. Oliver Perez will either sign with the Mets or Tigers.

Dirtysanchez September 9, 2008 at 2:43 pm

its the yankees…and they are coming off the first time they missed the playoffs in how long…..

Boscov September 9, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Yeah. In my mind Sabathia is already wearing pinstripes.

You know, like right after hsi arm falls off his game 2 (or game 1?) loss to the Mets in the playoffs, the Yanks will announce that they have signed him in early June.

Who is technically the Brewers #1? Sheets or CC? I’ve gotta think CC is their best pitcher but maybe the “title” of #1 starter rests with Sheets? anyone know?

Boscov September 9, 2008 at 2:59 pm

I think with the Angels always strong bullpen they’re going to prefer dishing out that huge money to Teixiera since he represents a way more pressing need for them: a middle of the order bat to pair with big Vlad.

devildogjack September 9, 2008 at 2:25 pm

No Pedro, please. Scrap him now. He is the bull pen killer that Glavine was previously.

shannon September 9, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Sorry – Pedro is not getting re-signed. The guy is a Hall of Famer, but he has lost a lot of his abilities. If the Mets legitimately want to be a playoff contender for next year, Pedro can’t be signed. or if he is, they better sign a huge bat or a reliever.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Pedro at 10 Mil is stupid. I really don’t get where these predictions come from, but they are not very accurate at all.

I would sign Pedro 1 year 6 Mil, but no more than that.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 2:27 pm

These predictions are stupid. Angels are not going to sign KRod for 75mil as the Artie Moreno have confirmed that. Also, are you saying that the Mets are not going to sign Ollie for 4 years 56mil?? That’s crazy. They’ve signed Pedro 4 years 53 mil when he was past his prime. Ollie is only 27 and the Mets are not stupid enough to let Ollie go for 4 years 56 mil.

I know the Mets will be searching for a closer during the offseason, but KRod for 75 mil is little too much. Closers are very unpredictable and KRod’s fastball went down couple mph as he has been walking more guys too. He’ll have couple more good years but I don’t see him dominating like Mariano for a long time.

WilletsPoint7 September 9, 2008 at 2:30 pm

This shows you what happens when you don’t have a grasp on MLB as most people claim to have. Its absolutely ridiculous that Angels outbid the Mets for O.Perez. If anyone over pays for Oliver, it will be the Tigers (Mets have their limits as to what O.Perez is worth)

kistics September 9, 2008 at 2:33 pm

The Mets limit is most likely more than 56 Mil for 4 years. That’s just stupid to think that Angels will sign him for that money and the Mets cannot.

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 2:33 pm

it’s pretty well known that Oh Pea will look to sign with a western division team or located south (think: Texas) – I see him going to the Rangers (not the first time they overpaid for a Boras client). I am the biggest Pea fan around, but he is in his walk year…Mets will give a high price but he’ll go where the weather is better.

CaseStreet September 9, 2008 at 2:45 pm

that’s news to me.

Chan Ho Parking Lot September 9, 2008 at 2:45 pm

You may be right, but that would be the wrong decision for him. He is born to be pitching in the spotlight, in big games.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Yeah, plus he love pitching against the Phillies and that Yanks. If he can pitch well against those two teams and mediocre against other teams, he’ll be loved with the Mets fans.

Boscov September 9, 2008 at 3:05 pm

I think Perez wants to get his fat contract in a sunny locale so when people start calling him a bust early next season after his ERA balloons to 7.98, he can at least perfect his tan.

Joking aside I’d want to resign him but he’s quite clearly going to yield BIG time money – money I dont want Omar, nor do I think he wants, to spend.

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 3:09 pm

I’m not gonna disagree with you — in fact, if you knew me, you’d also know that I am THE biggest Oh Pea fan around. My obsession is legendary (purely professional, LOL). I say pay the man, he is a Boras client and will ultimately go where the money is. But Oh Pea pitching in a big game. I love it!!

gutterkizmet September 9, 2008 at 5:43 pm

you guys are crazy if you think you are the biggest Ollie fan out there. I have the oliverperezfan site that is linked on the left (although I am the worst blogger in history updating it one a month or so) and I have probably 10% or more of all of the 2002 Ollie rookies printed. Take a look at my eBay history. Now that is bordering on obsesssion :)

mrose September 9, 2008 at 3:06 pm

seriously, when is this well known?

DK September 9, 2008 at 4:08 pm

and i thought i was the only one that didnt know this news… where did he ever make mention that he wanted to play out west?

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 4:12 pm

trying again – i answered mrose down below (like way below)

CaseStreet September 9, 2008 at 2:31 pm

SP – Santana, Sheets, Perez, Maine (healthy), Pelfrey. Wow!

K-Rod closing.

No need to add any bats.

SS – Reyes
2B – Murphy
3B – Wright
1B – Delgado
CF – Beltran
RF – Church
LF – Tatis
C – Schneider

Bench
Castro
Chavez
Pagan
Easley
Evans/A. Reyes/Castillo (if not traded)

NickA33 September 9, 2008 at 2:38 pm

That’s not a bad rotation, not sure if it will come to fruition or not but I like it. I’d change up Maine though. Of course, it all depends on his injuries but I would place Maine at our #3 or #2 depending on how his injury turns out.

I also think they’ll bring up FMart and platoon him in LF with Tatis.

Closer will be either K-Rod or Fuentes.

JMO

CaseStreet September 9, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Pagan will be the Tatis’ platoon mate, if any.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 2:44 pm

I can’t see the Mets signing both Sheets and Perez. I think they’ll only sign one of them and go for a closer. It would be nice to see Sheets and Perez in the Mets uniform next year, but I doubt that will happen.

Also I think KRod is overated for how much money he wants, which is 5 year 75 mil. That’s how much Mariano gets paid and we all know that KRod is no Mariano. Even with the Yankees, they never signed Mariano longer than 4 year deal.
KRod’s K/BB ratio has gone down a lot this year and that’s never a good sign for a closer.

CaseStreet September 9, 2008 at 3:07 pm

I don’t know. If Sheets and K-Rod each go for $15M and Ollie at $14M (more like $12M), that’s $44M. We have $37M coming off the books in Pedro, Billy, Alou and Duque. Aside from increase in the rest of the teams salary, I’d imagine that this difference wouldn’t be too big of a deal.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Billy is with the Mets next year at 8 Mil. Plus, it’s not a matter of how much they are going to pay next year. Its a matter of how much money the Mets will be committing next 4-5 years. Look what’s happend to Pedro and Castillo. They looked great when they signed, but money is tied up and basically wasted when they are injured or does not perform well.

Yanks have a lot of that wasted money in their roster like Pavano, Giambi, Igawa, etc. I just don’t want the Mets to be like that.

We Were Throwbacks September 9, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Castillo looked great when he signed? Really? I threw up when I first got word of that deal.

Honestly, I liked a couple of your previous posts on this thread but it’s hard to swallow your credibility when you say that Castillo was ever a good sign, no less “great”.

mookie September 9, 2008 at 3:03 pm

looks really good to me. I would also ad that brad holt will be called up late june early august and we will have ourselves a dominant 8th inning pitcher.

Boscov September 9, 2008 at 3:06 pm

So the Mets are somehow signing Sheets, Perez, and K-Rod? That’s wrong.

rogasm September 9, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Sheets and Perez…let Rodriguez go elsewhere.

danlx13 September 9, 2008 at 3:44 pm

sheets, perez, and krod…thats too much.. maybe sheets, perez ad fuentes? or maybe even forget ollie?? but that would be the nicest rotation in baseball even if the yankees were to get CC and Burnett….
we would have 3 aces…johan, sheets, pelf and ollie who is not too far from one

NickA33 September 9, 2008 at 2:36 pm

I’d like to sign CC but I can see him going to the Yankees. They need him more than we do and will throw more money at him. That being said, with CC’s dominance in the NL, he may want to stay in the NL.

However, I find it truely hard to believe that we do not sign K-Rod OR Fuentes. My reasoning is the same as above. We need a Closer. There’s no way we don’t sign either player.

And Perez is a bit of an enigma. I really do like him. I could see him back with the Mets but his contract demands may be too high. Somone will pay it, sure, but I have no idea if it will be the Mets or not.

miker94 September 9, 2008 at 2:36 pm

thank goodness these predictions are never going to happen because if the Mets resign pedro then I’m jumping off a bridge.

Sam September 9, 2008 at 2:37 pm

The Mets need to let Pedro move on. He had a decent run, but has proven to be more of a liability. Resign Ollie, and maybe another arm and start getting the young guys ready for the big league!

bkfitz September 9, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Awful predictions. The Angels won’t re-sign K-Rod (he’s burned his bridges with them when he said early in the season he’ll become a FA). They won’t sign Perez either. They have to extend Lackey. The one big guy they could sign is Mark Teixeira. He has been great for them. They might want to extend Guerrero and bring back Anderson on a cheap deal.

Don September 9, 2008 at 2:38 pm

pedro’srun with the expos=very good
bosox-amazing
mets-good production 1 of 4 years.

CitizenSnips September 9, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Perez. The same Oliver Perez we all know and love (from time to time) for $14 million a year? That’s beyond nuts.

Dirtysanchez September 9, 2008 at 2:47 pm

1) pedro has to be the last option if we were to bring him back.
2) The mets can easily match that price if thats what it took to bring ollie back
3) i do expect CC/AJ/Sheets to sign with other clubs(not the mets)
4) I see the mets landing Krod..(everyone knows omars craving for a splash in the offseason).
5) I see the mets landing a mid level kind of pitcher..(people have mentioned lowe/garland/loshe) and thats fine to fill 2 SP spots.
6) we will not see niese in the rotation or Fmart in LF.
7) Heilman will be traded.
8) Castillo is not going anywhere

Dirtysanchez September 9, 2008 at 2:52 pm

well 1 sp spot if they get ollie
and the castillo comment is supposed to be 8 ) not 8)

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 3:04 pm

You know, we didn’t think Omar would get rid of Mota either and we did get a warm body for him (although we didn’t keep that guy either). So don’t discount talks of getting rid of Castillo – he’s done. We’ll just have to eat salary (which tastes delicious in that case)

Dirtysanchez September 9, 2008 at 3:11 pm

I just dont see it happening man and lets say they do..Are they going to go for Odog who will want a similar or more expensive than castillo but not that big of differance in pop/def…and we STILL eat money on castillo contract. Not sounding so good. On the other side of the coin..you are going to trust a starting 2b job to a kid that only played a season of fall league and a few games in the minors…….Thats alot of trust. I dont see it happening bro but hey omar has surprised me before

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Dirty – first, bad contracts get eaten all the time and this is one of them. Second, Murphy is a natural infielder right? We trusted Mo Vaughn with first – why not an agile natural player? Third, do we really have to go after every single hot free agent? Fourth – I am a chick ;-)

Dirtysanchez September 9, 2008 at 3:40 pm

my appologies coop.. :)
Yes murphy is a natural 3b but 3b and 2b are too different positions entirely, i dont think he has enough time in 2b to be trusted to start. The alternative would be if we are eating castillos contract would be either to ask for an infielder on the team that we are dumping him on or as many people have suggested is to sign odog. The problem is odog wants utley money but hes isnt even in the same league. So we get a bad wrap by eating castillos contract plus taking on a huge contract by odog who isnt really a considerable upgrade over castillo. So thats my stance on this and i still believe the mets will shop castillo but he will be here next year.

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 3:46 pm

fair ’nuff

DontShakeAlousHand September 9, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Pedro = No Thank you, take away his name, and his time here would have found him released already

Sheets – Another No Thank You. This guy is injured every year. Let someone else deal w that. No pitchers with injury problems all of a sudden get healthier as they get older.

Perez – I think you have to sign him. You are going to overpay, but at this point you won’t be able to replace him. I’d prefer to overpay for a young, healthy, starter who has already performed in NY and in the playoffs, than for injury proned starters who have never pitched in NY or playoffs.

K – Rod – Sounds nice in theory, but I think that is too much money for a closer, even for someone of his caliber. He’s logging a lot of innings this year in a quest to set records in both saves and contracts for a closer – I wouldn’t be surprised to see him break down in the coming years. I would prefer to sign an average veteran closer and try and develop Kunz or some other hard throwing minor leaguer.

skullkrusher September 9, 2008 at 2:54 pm

good point on overpaying for closers. We did that for Wags and while he’s had a nice run, can anyone here honestly say they ever felt comfortable hearing “Enter Sandman” playing in the 9th inning of a close game?

Re-sign Ollie. He probably has some weird OCD thing that’ll make it easy to get a hometown discount outta him. Groom Kunz for the closer role next year. Get Heilman the hell out of NY and back into a starting job. Maybe package him with Castillo to get somthing in exchange (and eat a big chuck of Castillo’s contract I’d imagine) Get the “interim” out of Manuel’s job title and make him the full time manager. Sign Delgado to an incentive heavy deal for a year or 2 ( if possible ). Hopefully Murph can excel in winterball and come back as the fulltime 2B next year.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 2:55 pm

I agree with you completely. Although KRod’s innings pitched is not all that much from the years past, his K/BB ratio is down and his fastball hasn’t been what it once was.

Dirtysanchez September 9, 2008 at 3:05 pm

ughh im getting tired of this krod thing
ok IP
03-86ip
04-84ip
05-67.1
06-73.0
07-67.1
08-61.1
So as you can see he has logged in about the avg amount over the last few years but certianly not as much as earlier in his career. The guy is only 26. He has altered his pitching motion to avoid..let me reiterate..AVOID getting injured in the future. Yes his K/BB ratio went down but it had to with his adjusted delivery. As you can see he still gets the job done

skullkrusher September 9, 2008 at 3:12 pm

but he is still a reliever. An extremely consistent one but still a reliever. The kind of money he will command isn’t worth it for a guy who will pitch 4 or 5 innings a week.

Dirtysanchez September 9, 2008 at 3:22 pm

And that potentially give you a win on those 4 or 5 innings a week instead of playing closer by committee or relying on someone with little closing experiance(ayala). I dont remember the stat but think about it this way..if the bullpen had converted even half of the games they blew and lidge had not been perfect in save opportunites…how different this race would look. The peace of mind knowing that we got a guy with a pedegree like krod would take alot of pressure off almost all departments. Nothing in baseball is a guarentee…only best guess/chance and krod gives us the best chance to save games and save our bullpen(extra innings). You dont want that?

There's Always '09 September 9, 2008 at 3:06 pm

So an average veteran closer. You mean like a Todd Jones or Joe Borowski?

The reason the Mets were as successful as they were in 2006 was because of their bullpen. That is just what I saw with my own two eyes. Heilman, Sanchez, and Wagner were lock down in the 7th-9th innings. I would have no problem going after a guy like K-Rod. He is still nasty. He has a few pitches.

LarryFlint September 9, 2008 at 3:29 pm

HOW BOUT BRIAN FUENTES? hes an FA

2 months ago there wasn’t a single ad. Now i can’t read one article without being offered an Italian meat pizza and saving money on my car insurance.

I know the ads mean revenue for this hard working staff but isn’t this being presented by Geico enough? The frequent ads take away from this site. I’m waiting for the Guiseppe Franco ad on the homepage.

LarryFlint September 9, 2008 at 3:30 pm

dominicanboy08 September 9, 2008 at 2:58 pm

hey, guys what about mussina for 2 years 16 million? I know he is old but he is having a good season.

DK September 9, 2008 at 4:13 pm

you should be banned from this site

TheMetsJetsNets September 9, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Imagine if the mets got all of them except Burnett. I mean, imagine this

Santana, Sabathia, Sheets, Pelfrey and Perez( not in any order)

And the closer would be K Rod

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 3:03 pm

you are all right in my book with Jets & Mets being your team but what are you SMOKING if you think the Mets are a.) going to get all those players and b.) spend the moolah to get them? I know – I know – it’s crack, right? LOL Seriously, when did our wish lists get to be Yankee proportions. Remember in 2005 we’d all have been happy to get Craig Counsell and ended up with Beltran, Pedro and almost Delgado. Let’s keep the wish lists to a reasonable. ‘K?

TheMetsJetsNets September 9, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Everyone can chip in.. We could sell our stuff and make some money. Give it to the mets and let them use it. You guys sell your houses.. I will sell my xbox and bam, we got the money. we need someone to be a hit man tho. like a secret angent to make sure the other teams dont get the players before we do.

Mr. Bananagrabber September 9, 2008 at 3:02 pm

So wait… The Mets, who will have shed the Alou and Pedro contract at the end of the year, as well as the Perez contract, who will also have a brand new stadium, will spend only $10 million on one more year of Pedro?

That makes sense.

There's Always '09 September 9, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Sounds like Rotoworld.com is grabbing bananas.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 3:13 pm

I know everyone seem to love the idea of KRod coming to the Mets. I do too, but not at his price of 15 mil per year. Check this stat out for this year,

ERA SV K BB
KRod 2.49 55 70 30
Mariano 1.43 33 71 6
Nathan 1.05 36 65 16
Papelbon 1.62 36 71 7
Soria 1.77 35 61 15
Lidge 2.11 35 78 28

These are the names of so called the ‘automatic’ closers and you can clearly see that KRod have not been the best out there.
To give him 15 mil per year for 5 years is definitely overpaying

Dirtysanchez September 9, 2008 at 3:26 pm

And who is available that is better?

GravediggerHebner September 9, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Exactly, Dirty. The issue is availability, and the other issue is the rest of those guys are pretty upset that Soria got lumped in with them because they have pressure on them when they close, unlike Soria in KC where the team is not contending.

LarryFlint September 9, 2008 at 3:31 pm

BRIAN FUNTES

We Were Throwbacks September 9, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Brian Fuentes is a left-handed version of Braden Looper. Enough with the Fuentes posts…look at his stats…they’re nice, that’s all. We can do better in-house than shelling out 10m to Fuentes.

kistics September 9, 2008 at 3:34 pm

I just want to make a point that KRod at 15 mil for 5 years is not a good idea. I want to see KRod with the Mets too but 12-13 mil for 3 years is reasonable.

Take Joe Nathan for example, he renewed his contract for 4 years 11.25 per year. If anyone can replace Mariano as the best closer in baseball, it’s Nathan. He did not get 5 years and 15 mil.

kidfromqueens September 9, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Obviously, Wags isn’t an option for next year, but it’s worth pointing out that K-Rod has a substantially higher WHIP (1.24 vs. 0.89), higher ERA (2.49 vs. 2.30) than him this season, only a very slightly higher K/IP (1.14 vs. 1.11), and has only one fewer blown save. He’s a very nice addition in Wags’s absence compared to the other options, but really, we would be getting the same (or worse) than we’ve already been getting this year when Wags has been healthy- which, granted, hasn’t been nearly as much as we’d like, which certainly makes K-Rod the superior pitcher overall this year, but his in-game talent wouldn’t be a boost over what we’re already used to.

kidfromqueens September 9, 2008 at 3:22 pm

In all fairness to the Rotoworld piece, Pouliot writes “I am projecting destinations and contracts for the top free agents, but don’t expect much accuracy there, particularly with the teams.” The point of this article is the general discussions of the issues surrounding each particular players free agency. The predictions- a very small part of this article- are indeed essentially guesses and the piece itself pretty much admits that.

GravediggerHebner September 9, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Then he probably should have stuck to ‘general discussions of the issues surrounding each particular player’ as the inclusion of the destinations is flawed and detracts from the purpose.

kidfromqueens September 9, 2008 at 3:36 pm

I agree- but at least he admits so himself at the top of the piece.

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Mrose – I tried desperately to answer your question above twice!!! Trying to keep it short and sweet – basically a combination of people in the MLB-know (I don’t claim to have direct knowledge there) and stuff Oh Pea has “leaked” to the media over the years (like prefering to pitch in warm weather, etc) – we know that he’s from Mexico, so the logical conclusion is…he wants to be closer to home (these are the medias findings, not mine!). However, no one has ever come out and said this (but seriously think about what a jerk we would think Oh Pea was if he did say something), but it’s taken a life of it’s own. It could be a combination of things – 1.) Boras trying to get a west coast team to drive up the price – 2.) he wants more money out of the Mets. Which makes sense – wouldn’t be the first time Boras got someone to outbid themselves in free agency. I want Pea back as bad anybody – he needs to be here simply so I can watch him in amazement :D

DK September 9, 2008 at 4:16 pm

weak arguments.. and speculation, just like rotoworld

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Be that as it may, enough people believe it and I am just preparing myself for the worst. Of course, I prepared myself for not having Johan Santana this year and we all know how that panned out :D

DK September 9, 2008 at 4:30 pm

u ever hear of positive thinking?

Besides disappointment and let downs come with being a Met fan..

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Feel the flow – it’s circular. I tried the positive thinking thing last year – didn’t work. Decided to prepare myself. It’s worked out so far (me hating on Delgado – his resurgence – never thinking we’d get out of third place – we did – LOL)

DK September 9, 2008 at 4:36 pm

in that case hate on Heilman for me… he is by far the biggest waste of life on this team.

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 4:55 pm

ha ha ha – ok I will – I actually like him. Maybe that’s why he’s invoked the wrath of most Mets fans!

LarryFlint September 9, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Why are so many people infatuated with Jon Garland? He has a 4.50 career era, never under 4. rare ks etc

ALSO WHY IS BRENDAN KUNTY POSTING AGAIN?! HES A BUMB!

Janait September 9, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Cannot believe the Mets will re-sign Pedro. They learned their lesson this year with Alou and El Duque. As for Ollie Perez, I bet they keep him. They need another starter, so why not go after one who can compete in NY?

theCoop September 9, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Well, then again…Omar DID exercise Alou’s option when we all knew that he wouldn’t be able to play another year. I say that when Felipe Alou told him he had at least one good year left in him – that meant half of one year, a quarter of another, and a quarter of a third-year :D Just kidding – I think there will be hell to pay in this fan base is Pedro comes back. Nice knowin ya!

LarryFlint September 9, 2008 at 3:28 pm

TheBigStapler September 9, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I’d like to hear a little more about these missions, please!

LarryFlint September 9, 2008 at 3:31 pm

WHY DO PEOIPLE WANT JON GARLAND? HE HAS A 4.50 ERA SIGN DEREK LOWE OLLIE DELGADO ABD BRIAN FUENTES!

KFS September 9, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Does anyone realize that K-Rod will not only cost us money but also our #1 pick for being a Type-A free agent?

Is he really worth 4 years $60 mil (minimum) and a #1 pick?

danlx13 September 9, 2008 at 3:36 pm

The mets will resign ollie and they will sign krod….i would much rather sign a more top notch starter instead of ollie. Oliie is good but still scares me too much

johan
pelf
ollie
maine
Rookie or another cheap Free Agent
or
johan
Top notch Free Agent
Pelf
maine
Rookie/FA (most likely a rookie)

KFS September 9, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Ollie might be scary but really, who’s out there that you’d trust more to hand the ball over to every fifth day that’s not named CC?

kistics September 9, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I agree. Sheets is not dependable either due to his injuries. Ollie is the best option out there for the Mets.

danlx13 September 9, 2008 at 3:47 pm

sheets

danlx13 September 9, 2008 at 3:47 pm

burnett

teufelshuffle86 September 9, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Just say NO to Pedro.

emjay September 9, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Do we know if Wagner’s ‘09 salary is covered by insurance yet? Omar said he didn’t know yesterday. If it is, it could free up a good chunk of change to be used to sign his replacement (KROD?)

Ollie will go to the team that pays him the most $$. There are very few players, especially ones that are Boras clients signing their first big contract that will take a discount to relocate to a place “closer to home.” Not like the weather is cold in NY during the summer. I can see warm weather being a bigger factor for a football or basketball player that would have to live in NY during the winter. And even if Ollie lives in Dallas, he doesn’t get to fly down to Mexico too often during the season anyway. I just don’t see it being too much of a factor–if the Mets offer the most (or very close to it) they will probably keep him.

losmets5 September 9, 2008 at 3:48 pm

The fact that he thinks the Mets will sign Pedro over Ollie disregards everything this guy says. I mean really, can you actually be THAT stupid?

danlx13 September 9, 2008 at 3:51 pm

ive changed my mind…
johan, sheets or burnett, pelf, maine, #5 they can go with either a rookie or a lowere level free agent.
(also have to remember what maine can do when hes healthy)

dont get krod..the mets should save that money and go for someone a little cheaper like fuentes who is still a solid closer. this way they can get someone like sheets or burnett

KFS September 9, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Is Sheets/Burnett really an upgrade over Ollie?

danlx13 September 9, 2008 at 4:04 pm

defenitely

kistics September 9, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I don’t see it. Ollie has dominating stuff and is left handed. Probably come cheaper than Sheets/Burnett. I don’t see how Burnett is getting all these credits. Only thing he does well is pitching well against the Yanks. He has 4.47 ERA with the Blue Jays and has never won more than 12 games until this year. AND he’s older than Perez.

Sheets have dominating stuff and pitches well when he’s healthy. But he hasn’t been healthy since 2004.

danlx13 September 9, 2008 at 5:11 pm

sheets has 13 wins, a 2.82 era, 5 CG, 3 SHO, 188 innings pitched, and 151 Ks…Is that someone u dont want on ur team??
he is better that perez…perez has never had #s like that and sheets has #s like that every yr

castilloiscrap September 9, 2008 at 5:36 pm

If this guy’s prediction is somehow true. FIRE OMAR IMMEDIATELY!
