Last season, I took it upon myself to post the team’s Magic Number when it reached 20.
Then, after the Phillies won the division instead of the Mets, I was sent e-mail and after e-mail accusing me of being a jinx.
This year, I figure it makes more sense to open it up to the site’s overall readership, putting all of us on the hook, not just me.
The Mets are three games up on the Phillies, with 18 games left, making their Magic Number 16.

It doesn’t have to be a jinx to be something that people don’t want to see…
I had the experience of being in Tokyo for work during the collapse.. which was 13 hours ahead.. so I’d wake up at 7AM my time.. and the mets game would be usually in the 4th or 5th inning.. so all my updates were via the web and metsblog…
Seeing that magic number haunting me was awful… I def don’t want to see it again..

I know it’s just a number, and Matt doesn’t control the universe (at least not yet), with the same sentiment as most readers, seeing the magic number with the accompanying graphics was one of the most depressing thing of last season.
You have no impact on the teams play…

I would have considered a “0-5″ option, but without that, just don’t post.
I will never forget watching that magic number last
year with the Philly Phanatic in the back ground fading
behind Mr. Met holding the magic number. Then with each
loss the Phanatic got bigger and clearer,,,and finally after
the last final day, the Phanatic got bigger than Mr. Met.
I initially voted to post it between 0 and 10 games. I would
now officially like to change that vote to never post it again.
God that was an awful time to be a Mets fan. Everyday

I am not a jinx guy but watching that Magic Number thing with the Phillie Phantic catching up last year was one of the most depressing lasting impressions of the collapse…let’s leave it alone for the sanity of the already insane

I’d like to see it at either 10 or 5. I am scared of the dreaded “jinx”, but it’s important to realize that we don’t affect these ballgames. And the magic number is a really fun statistic when it gets low; it really builds anticipation.
That said, if you post a magic number and the Mets don’t make the playoffs…IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT!!!!
Matt, why not post the Shea Stadium Game countdown instead?

Post it now. Now that there are no games against the Phillies, the magic number is a representation of our scoreboard watching.
Also, if there’s one team that can clinch tonight, (there is) It’s appropriate for other teams to be looking at when they can do it.

I had no problem magic number-watching in 2006 or 1986 when there was literally no prayer anyone was going to catch us. Otherwise, I don’t like it.
It is so weak to not want to post the magic number.

corollary: when do they install the extra playoff seating behind/around home plate?
When they clinch the damn thing. The thing that bothered me is that the playoff seating was put up so early last year. I think it may have had an effect on some games with foul balls just making it to the “seats”
I can only imagine how much extra playoff seating will be added to cozy CitiField….the seats might go right up to the base coaches box….

Has anyone noticed we are tied in the loss column with Milwaukee? We’ve made up 5-6 games in a week or so.
I want this division in the worst way, but this is no small development. I’m not above liking a safety net…
I have been taking heed. One thing that would be sweeter than winning the division from the Phillies. That is beating them in the NLCS. I pray they make the playoffs.

Anyone who is such a hardcore Mets fan as to be coming to this site knows – by heart – the Mets record, the # of games remaining, the Phillies record, the wild card stats, etc. Some of us read this site on handheld devices — one less bit of clutter would be appreciated.
Yes, I admit I just bite my cheek while I saw that, or maybe that’s just me eating my lunch, but frankly, how about until the very last second. just wait. As long. as possible. Sadly this isn’t 2006 and we aren’t the Halos.
This is September. This is time for some battling. This is the most entertaining part of the regular season. Lets have some more entertainment by watching the magic number fall.
The magic number countdown is entertaining. Its a nice spark of conversation and after a big win and a Phills loss (Like last night), seeing it drop two on this front page gives us all a huge smile. Sparks some nice chats in the comments sections.
If you believe that a jinx is going to cause us to miss the playoffs, then don’t look at it. For the rest of us, its fun to see. I enjoy watching it drop. Its entertainment for me in what should be an fun filled month of baseball, its just some extra spice.
Though, I do feel for the supersticious people here. Maybe the Magic Number can be posted, but have a “Hide” feature so that only those who want to see it can, and the supersticious can hide it out of view and mind.

I said between 0 and 10, but that’s because its not my site. I wouldn’t want to be the jinx. Let Gary Cohen handle the jinx part if necessary, as every time he said no one has gotten a hit, given up a home run – sure enough it happens right then. Love the guy, but its crazy.

I don’t think it’s a jinx, it’s just a really bad memory. Don’t want to see it until it’s at 0. I had nightmares about the stupid magic number last year. I’m not even kidding. Actual bad dreams.
I had a dream that I was racing the Phillie Phanatic and he was pretty blurry at the start way back there. As time went on I felt like I was moving but wasn’t covering any ground and before I knew it the phanatatic had gone past me…Maybe it was my huge head that weighed me down.
As I woke up from the nightmare I sighed and said Santana is not Glavine, Jerry is not Willie and this is NOT 2007

For all of you paranoids out there, if you want to erase the memory of last year, I suggest you watch the number daily here until it reaches zero. You will feel better.
And Matt, make sure the graphic for clinching day is appropriately stark. I can think of some appropriate poses for the Phillie Phanatic.
To me, it’s not about paranoia. What use does the magic number serve in a tight race until there are the same amount of games remaining as the number of games by which the first place team leads the second place team?
The magic number only makes sense if you have a big (10+ games) lead in the division. There is simply absolutely no reason at all to see a magic number as long as the race is close.
It makes sense as long as it’s less than games played. It makes sense once other teams ahve started clinching. It makes sense when _everyone_ is thinking about the stretch run.
After last year, the Mets don’t deserve a magic number. If they take the division or make it to the playoffs, you can post a magic number for next year. Hell, you can start on opening day.

This isn’t about the “magic number.” It’s about magic thinking. Do you guys actually think what you do or feel or think or believe makes any difference as to what happens on the field? I mean, are you nuts? Post the “magic number” because whether Matt posts it or not, it’s going to be what it is regardless. Having it up will at least give the final couple weeks of the season one more entertaining (and nail-biting) dimension.
MLB.com already started including it on their standings page so I say go for it Matt. You can always blame them for doing it first even through it doesn’t matter.

I’ve said it once before and I’ll say it a million times: there are no such things as jinxes and curses. There is only coincidence. If you believe in jinxes, curses, witch spells, voodoo dolls, a rabbit’s foot, etc., move to the North Side of Chicago.
Matt, post the magic number whenever you want. It’s part of the game. If the Mets don’t win the division, we should blame it in the players and not you posting the magic number.

I am not superstitious so go ahead and post it. But I still have the Magic Number posted in my office with my playoff tickets. The Magic Number never reached zero and the tickets never got punched.
On second thought maybe you should hold off on posting it.
One side of me says don’t post it because it’ll remind us too much of last year. Another says do it anyway. All of us of kind of have an idea of what it is. The Wild Card can turn out meaning a lot to this club too.
I’d post it only if the Mets are still up at least a couple games with a week to go.
