Dan Levy wrote the following, among other emotional remarks, on The 700 Level, a popular Phillies blog:
“I’m tired of this…I’m tired of waking up and seeing the Mets boxscore and wondering if it’s even possible to catch a team that has gotten better after each pitcher goes down for the season. I’m tired of the Chase. I’m tired of chasing the Mets. I’m tired of chasing the Brewers, begging for a four-game sweep this weekend to maybe get into the Wild Card. I’m tired of chasing anyone. This should be a first-place team. That’s what we were promised…
“The television commercials and ticket brochures had us gearing up for the best season in 28 years. This team had everything. Except, as it seems, leadership. That’s why I’m tired of Chase. You read that right.
“Jimmy Rollins is a soundbite and this year can’t back it up. Ryan Howard only cares about money. So does Cole Hamels. Brett Myers is just happy to be in the majors…Pat Burrell is just happy to get at-bats.
“That leaves one man to lead this team: Chase Utley.
“Chase Utley sucks this year. Do something other than snap your gum, hit a pop up or little dribbler to the right side, put your head down in shame and trot to first. Show us you’re alive. Show us you’re a leader. We care so much about this team. We just wish you cared enough to show us you do too.”
For more, read Randy Miller’s column for the Burlington County Times, which is titled, ‘It’s Slipping Away.’

He sounds like a Mets fan, circa September 07′.
he’s my evil twin :P
Ahhh the game of baseball…
Kum-bah-yah, my friend, Kum-bah-yah. Sounds like self mutalation is more prevalent than once thought.
to quote the old brooklyn metal band carnivore “i went to my basement confused and depressed – put some black sabbath on a wilkenson in my hand and 10 slashes in each arm
Someone quoted Carnivore on metsblog. The end is nigh!
if you can’t eat it or f it then kill it lol sorry nobeers
wow so right, babseball is such an interesting game with so many twists and turns
Haha…totally agree, which is why after what Mets fans went through last season, I don’t feel bad for him at all.
What we went through last season was much worse. Being behind in the midst of a pennant race is frustrating for Phillies fans but it doesn’t compare to the meltdown that happened to the our team last year.
Very amusing to see them coming apart–seems a little too familiar from last year, but nevertheless…
As for this guy’s comments about Utley, that’s a bit much. He needs to stop trying to get hit by pitches, but the fact is, he is one helluva player. I’d gladly swap second basemen with the Phils, if they’re interested!
I thought Utley has been playing hurt all year? He certainly is killing my fantasy team. No leadership, that’s my problem too with my guys. I’m going to have to start calling them out to the media, like that article in The Onion: “Fantasy Baseball Owner Rips Team In Media.”
hank is that u??
I love that article. Cla$$ic:
“now I have to explain myself to my kids when they read in the papers that their daddy is a ’sh**-for-brains a$$hole who can’t even get five strikeouts when that’s all we needed to win the category.’”
It’s common when a team doesn’t succeed for the fans (and sometimes ownership) to blame the team’s best players for not being good enough.
Geez, they’re only 3.5 games back. The guy writes as if they were out of it.
Until the Mets win the pennant, I’m still going to be looking over my shoulder to see where the Phillies are.
And what about the Flyin’ Hawaiian? He’s certainly caused the Mets enough grief the past couple of seasons.
Jimmy ‘Superfuly’ Snuka?
yea seriously, werent they down by twice this amount with the exact same amount of games left last year?
xavier didn’t we have that sad sack attitude when we were ahead by 3 games last year??? its just great to see them eating humble pie this time lol
Oh I’m not complaining about it, just wondering where it was coming from. I mean, there are 17 games to play and we all know what happened last year at that point.
Perhaps Phillies fans are realizing the 2008 Mets are indeed a different team from last year.
I think that’s spot on…
If you go over and read BLeaguer you’ll see they don’t think this is the same Mets team, and they are very worried.
oh i understand im just giddy that we as of a month and a half ago in 3rd place while these cretins were asleep dreaming of the pennent lol
I read this comment by the Phillies fan and contemplated the underlying meaning of it all. I searched long and hard within myself to come up with a thoughtful response. And here it is:
Go Eff Yourself! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! aaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
hows about drown your tears in a rolling rock while eating some scrapple btw what the fu5k is scraplle??? :P
I refuse to take the bait.
I was watching the Giants-Cowboys playoff game, when a friend of mine who is a Cowboys fan texted me “Congratulations”, with 5 mins to go and the Giants getting the ball back. I refused the bait then and I completely refuse it now.
Look at all of the runs going on right now. The Astros climbed back into it. The Cards are right back in it. All it takes is one 3 game losing streak coupled with a 3 game winning streak for the Phils.
We just need to take care of our business and win ballgames – then that champagne will be really sweet….and really cold.
you are a better man then me always
I love it.
I like how he’s writing as though the Phillies have already been eliminated, rather than being 3.5 games back, and then goes on to respond, “It’s September and you’re 3.5 games up” to Jose Reyes’s “this is our year” comment.
You’re missing his point-he’s saying it’s over and NOW Reyes is making a bold prediction after the fact.
i think you are right bogar – tim bogar now thats a name i haven heard in a long time – a long time … i wonder if he will be there on the last day of shea :)
lol oops. I somehow completely skipped over the “Way to go out on a limb”.
Whatever, I still think it’s lame for him to call Reyes out for that because it could just as easily be construed as an observation of how well they’re playing, rather than a prediction. Like the difference between studying really hard for finals and being, like, “Hey, I have a shot at a 4.0″ and saying, “I’m gonna kick some αss this semester!!!” while shopping for textbooks at the end of August.
I can’t believe how off base this guy is. Howard isn’t just in it for the money … he cares quite a bit. Thing is, he’s a big ogre and there is only so much a slugger can do. Chase is just your typical professional … all business. When he’s doing well it looks like fire, when he’s not, it comes across as malaise.
The Phillies weren’t as good on paper as the Mets going into the season. Their rotation had far more questions, their offense wasn’t really any better and their bullpen was a big question mark. Most experts picked the Mets to win the division, so why should Philly fans feel any entitlement?
Although Tim McCarver picked the Mets as finishing 3rd this year – behind the Phillies and the Marlins.
Ahhhh, Tim, you annoying high-paid idiot.
tim is still mad that freddie fired him and replaced him with tom terrific
Didn’t everyone pick the Braves over the Mets this year as well? I believe Steve Phillips had them in 3rd behind the Braves and Phillies who would split the WC and Division.
EXPERTS
steve phillips is a turd with a agenda and a axe to grind
““jose reyes is a soundbite and this year can’t back it up. carlos delgado only cares about money. So does johan santana. mike pelfrey is just happy to be in the majors…luis castillo is just happy to get at-bats.
“That leaves one man to lead this team: carlos beltran/david wright.
“beltran/wright suck this year. Do something other than snap your gum, hit a pop up or little dribbler to the right side, put your head down in shame and trot to first. Show us you’re alive. Show us you’re a leader. We care so much about this team. We just wish you cared enough to show us you do too.”
this could have easily been written by a met fan not too long ago.
For what it is worth, the Braves had a ton of injuries.
Don’t get me wrong — I am psyched they are a distant memory, and I was pissed off about it pre-season.
Now let’s win this damn thing!
i thought it was – by the gipper lol
The thing is, the Phillies have really faced no adversity this year. What is their big injury? Tom Gordon?
The Mets have been besieged by injury and are still taking it to them.
It’s gotta hurt.
Adversity? They’ve never faced adversity. They can’t handle it. They got a lucky break in the game of hot potato division last year, and dropped it immediately.
It’s the Philly mentality and it annoys me. With their terrific run last season – btw, they still have zero playoff victories since 1993 – the fans just expected too much this year. It was my belief that the Mets just have them an early christmas present and it was hardly ANY of the Phillies’ doing that they squeezed in the way they did. The Mets gave it to them. That gave Philly fans an awfully false sense of optimism. LAST year the Mets were the better team. Now they’ve added a Santana, a Delgado, a Pelfrey – heck I’m honestly surprised it’s this close right now. And as I’ve said all season long, it would surprise me further if the Mets won this division by less than 4 games.
Of course it isn’t over, don’t take it for granted, play hard against wash and atl bla bla bla bla bla bl blkjgbg
i think we end the season up by 6 games – we win 92
They did have a pretty solid lead over us earlier this season…
until tom gordon went down :)
My, my how the tides have turned. I hope he chokes on his tears.
i hope he chokes on a geno’s pizza roll lol
Beautiful!
yikes……its 2007 all over again…but a different blog!!!!
mrose it it groundhog day in reverse??
to paraphrase the late great arte lange “waaaa “I’m tired of this…I’m tired of waking up and seeing the Mets boxscore and wondering if it’s even possible to catch a team that has gotten better after each pitcher goes down for the season. artie’s not dead kid….so he’s just the GREAT artie lange
arte is a bowl of fusilli away from having a coronary embolism l
“arte is a bowl of fusilli away from having a coronary embolism ”
That is funny. It truly made me laugh out loud. Good one.
There, but for the grace of DelGODo go I.
perro’s y delgado’s living together – its the end of the world as we know it — and i feel just ducky
Yikes, Don’t tick off Philly Fan. Go Mets, Sweep the stinkin Braves.
Chase Utley is as good a player as they have. This guy is crazy – if they don’t want Utley, I think we’d be happy to have him.
I love how he gives all the other guys a pa$$ for being whatever they are, and for not being leaders. It “falls on Utley” because everyone else sucks?
Jeez, dude. Your team’s not gonna win, but at least be supportive of the team’s best player. They wouldn’t even be competitive without Chase.
This is a really good point, that whole “Howard only cares about money, Moyer is 900 years old” paragraph bothered me and I couldn’t put my finger on why.
WAAAAHHHHHH
wow, never thought id say this but i agree with a phillies fan
intresting
aaron – thats a college educated philly fan – he went to community college
Very little makes me smile on 9/11 every year, but this has me grinning from ear to ear!
BTW before Gary Cohen gets credit for a jinx…the Mets have 17 games left this year….Up less than 7 games, a Brew Crew sweep or Phils sweep this weekend doesnt harm the Mets (too much) if they can win even 1 of 3…they will be at worst the wild card leader.
Lastly, havent seen any Delcrapo/Delgodno posts in a while. Where are you guys? Ive bashed Heilman for 4 years now, when he was good I got critized for my posts, stick to your guns…
mota please don’t settle for the wild card !!! to quote darth vader “it tis our destiny”!!
Seriously. The thought of the Phollies catching us and taking the East…it is just awful.
Too many annoying phans this year. Must. Destroy. Them.
mr.gee are u chaneling capt. kirk??
HA! If that will get the job done. I can just picture Shatner on the diamondvision leading one of those celebrity “Let’s Go Mets” chants. Would be hilarious.(of course, he’s Canadian, so who knows what team he roots for, if any)
more like lets -long pause – go mets
Anything other than support for the Mets from Capt. Kirk would be illogical.
And, as he would say on the DirecTV commercial, “What, I can’t use that line?”
I’m a Delcrapo hater here. I’m still undecided about his roids status in my mind, but have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the Mets will have to bring him back next year for a few reasons. 1) His recent surge in production makes you wonder if he could do it next year as well. 2) We have a glaring lack of depth on the farm to fill his spot because Carp isn’t ready yet. We’ve called up every other minor leaguer already, but didn’t call him up, that ought to tell you something. 3) There is a huge lack of depth on the free agent front next year at 1B unless you want to break the bank and sign Tex. But we have closer and rotation problems to fix that are more problematic, so it in my mind, it just makes sense to bring him back for one more year. If he does hit like this for another year, then he will be a Type A, and we can offer him Arbitration and collect the draft picks when he leaves. But until then, I just don’t see any other options, and don’t see the point in bagging on the guy when he’s hitting so well, and going to be with us for another year.
So to answer your question, I’m still here. And I still am not convinced and might never be, but I’ll take the production from him while I can get it. I just don’t think it will last. I hope I’m wrong.
you can’t be serious – this isn;t the giambino we are talking about !! maybe im a optomistic but i don;t believe carlos was on the stuff
I dont agree with you Chico, not at all, but love that you stick to your guns, its nice to see a non-overreacter on thsi site besides myself, I hate when someone grounds out and he’s “the worst ever, cut him”, then gets a hit “MVP MVP”…
I haven’t changed my screen name. I’m not Mr Met 41 or whoever you think I am. I know you are going to crucify me for this one too, but I don’t even like Mr. Met. I’ve never liked him.
But my point about Delcrapo is that he has hit 220 for so long and killing our lineup for so long, and now suddenly when it’s time to start thinking about picking up the option, he starts playing like an MVP? That sets my Roids suspicion off like no other. Is he using?
I don’t know.
How could I? But I’m certainly questioning it.
As for cutting him a couple of months ago, I was on the fence but definitely considering it. As for MVP now, I still am firmly entrenched on the NO side because the MVP is for the whole year and we all remember what the first few months were like.
That said, I hope he wins the MVP and the WS MVP so the option is automatically picked up, for one reason and one reason only.
It means the drought is over and the Mets WIN!!!
now i know where ‘mr.met41′ went
zen i thought it was by our favorite troll who’s name can’t be written on this blog now cuz of the filters – mirepetsbanishment
This guy’s family’s lucky he’s not a Cubs fan.
well said … just wish the pain would just go away
Didn’t the Mets chase the Phillie for the better part of the season?
Someone needs to change his diaper…..and put a pacifier in his mouth….
it’s nice to be leading the division.
The Mets are only half game behind the Brewers and only 5 games behind the Cubs. If the Cubs play the way they have been playing last 10 games, the Mets can easily be the best team in NL.
i would love to have the home feild advantage and the play the dodgers and kick torre’s coolie – i love and respect joe for he will always be a met to me – but i need vengence for the 13 years of yankee domination
The Mets would still play the Brewers even if they have the best record in NL, unless the Phillies take the wild card.
my mistake – a man can dram can’t he lol
It would be nicer to face the Dodgers rather than Brewers, since the pitching match up would be favorable. But then Dodgers’ bullpen has been great of late with Chan Ho Park.
where is parkinglot?? its been a couple of hours since he’s posted???
Howard’s just in it for the money? The Phillies FO tried to nickel-and-dime him and it cost them in arbitration. I’d ask for the moon if I was Howard, too–why shouldn’t the guy get paid?
I was gonna say it’s unfair to ask Chase Utley to lead when he’s so young, and then I saw that he’s actually 29 (30 in December). Still, he’s a great player and I don’t think you can pin any of the Phils’ current woes on his play.
the phils f.o remind me of the mets f.o in their dealings with hamton in ‘00
Nothing peeves me more than when a fan complains that a baseball player is ‘all about the money.’
First of all, we as fans think we know waaaaay more than we do about these guys. We really dont know ANYTHING. Yeah, we may see Beltran has a cool temperment, that Reyes dances a lot and is exciting – but we know jack squat about these guys.
Second, I don’t care if these guys ARE all about the money. Ryan Howard is a homerun hitter and quite possible the most potent homerun basher in baseball. The guy deserves a huge contract, bottom line. And if I was him, you bet your a$$ I’m going for a huge contract. You have to maximize your earnings in sports because the years these guys spend in the majors add up to a small % of their lives. Ry How should go get his. Just like Beltran, just like everyone else who goes for the green. If Oliver leaves the Mets for Texas because they offered 7 milion more – then good for him, he’s 7 million richer. Good for him. Fans get bitter whena playe rleaves, especially for a bad team – it must mean he doesn’t care about winning right? Wrong. The all mighty dollar, folks. If any of us were in the game, we’d be the same. It’s a business just like anything else. There just happens to be thousands and thousands of people paying attention and getting attached. That’s it. I say go get the money and enjoy it. Fans are completely misguided and have no idea what’s going on most of the time.
And this Phillies fan can suck it, honestly.
Exactly. If some newspaper or ESPN offered this guy money to leave his lame blog he would be gone in a second. People get mad at professional athletes for getting the most money possible when they would do the exact same thing.
Boscov, i couldnt agree more!! Show me the money!
Also, anyone see the little altercation between JC Romero and Chris Coste during yesterday’s game? Sure sign of a team coming unglued: pitchers fighting with catchers.
i heard it was almost like the marlins brawl of 2 years ago was it shea?
Not really–it was the Phils’ catcher and Romero having a realy heated argument after Romero allowed those tack on runs in the ninth–on the field, no less.
I mean, you wanna have it out? Do it in the dugout or the locker room. Don’t fight with teammates on the field.
well i think that cholly manuel might of lost his team now – how do u have romero pitching to the big ugg in that situation – maybe the phils will prove me wrong but i think that they are drained now
Uggla’s actually had terrible numbers against lefties this year, so it wasn’t a terrible move (even if it looks like one). But it was nice of Uggla to reverse his season-long trend yesterday.
Uggla has been worse than terrible against LH pitchers this season for some reason, so that’s way C Manuel left Romero in to pitch to him.
Still a questionable move.
like having rudy seanz pitch to lord del gad oh
Why did my post not get posted?! I bashed the Phils but didn’t use any fowel languge?! Booooo
Anyway, I’m taking great pleasure in watching Phils phans fall apart. It’s actually surprising to see, given the events of last year. But it’s true. I work with a Philly fan (I’m in Atlanta no less) and he hasn’t come over to talk trash once this year, not once. It’s hilarious.
I’m so glad to see the mindset of Philly fans is where it’s at because I despise Philly. They talk so much junk and have made the playoffs once in how many years? Seriously, they could come in last place for the next 10 years and I would be content.
I’ll be routing for Milwaukee this weekend. I really hope we can a) maintain our pace and b) end up with home field advantage.
LETS GO METS!!!
Since we are not Phillies fans, we are probably all at work and somewhat busy, but if you have time, read the comments underneath the post on “The 700 Level.” They are just as funny.
well all u have to do is look at a phillie fan – its kinda like looking at a female sloth from the goonies
Nah, there are some good-looking female Phils fans around. Chances are, though, they are airheaded bimbos and have an extreme case of genital herpes.
Thank God it’s Eagles season.
That says it all right there…
wabbit season!!!
duck season!!!
charlie manuel : “i demand that you shoot me now !!! FIRE!!!”
Do we get to see Cholly with his beak on the wrong side of his head now?
And his feathers flying off of his skin?
Yes, thank god it’s Eagles season. A fresh look at another 3rd place team.
I’m going to pissed if the Giants don’t sweep the Pigeons. I actually thought they’d be in the cellar again but I underestimated how bad the Redskins could be.
Eagles are going to be much improved so long as McNabb and Westbrook can stay on the field. Which is almost as unrealistic as us Mets fans expecting Alou to stay healthy this year. Remember him?
Seriously. There are few true baseball fans in Philly. I live here (unfortunately), and as soon as football season starts nobody cares about baseball.
…and usually by November, nobody cares about football either :-)
Go Big Blue!!! (one for each Lombardi)
I did take a look at them, and it’s almost creepy how similar they are to some of the comments here when the Mets weren’t doing as well:
I do not believe it to be a coincidence that it’s Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard taking the brunt of the blame for this season in the media, while the Golden Boy Chase Utley goes absolutely unscathed.
Someone definitely posted the same thing here, though obviously about Mets players instead.
remember larry doby did’t wan’t to come to philly in 67 there was a reason
Larry Doby retired in 1959. Are you thinking of Curt Flood?
thanks slob – i remember it was a great athlete from the midwest lol
Don’t forget, Richie Allen wanted out of there, too.
so much for the moniker “the city of brotherly love” :)
I remember that as well, and I remember agreeing with it. I don’t know enough about the Phillies’ specific situation to know whether or not I agree with that commenter’s statement, but I would say that it wouldn’t surprise me at all.
I will also say that, after looking at their roster, they seem to have an … inordinate number of white guys. It’s odd, at the very least.
Well… 2 months ago I was telling my friends who are phillies fans that it would come down to the last week.. probably the last 5 games and Mets would hang in there to win it… It might still happen this way… BUT— right now, with the way Beltran, Wright and Delgado are getting hot at same time and Phillies losing 2 big ones against the Marlin.. I can see Philly fading out—-This w.e. series against Brewers is HUGE.. All pressure on them. Bottom line: This division will come down to how Philly handles Milwaukee and Mets handling the Cubs (who are not playing their best in the last couple of weeks.. I like our chances.
I think this is quite possible, but also I am a bit troubled by the fact that our starting rotation looks as if it’s coming a bit unglued. I mean, one of them is down, and of the other four, only one pitched particularly well in his last start.
Could it be an aberration? Yes, and it probably is. But given this team’s history, I remain cautious in my optimism.
As to the Philly guy’s comments, while they seem a bit over the top, yes, the do seem eerily similar to stuff I’ve read here when things weren’t going as well for us. This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but what I think this really shows is that Philly fans and Mets fans have a lot more in common than we like to think…
I mean, we’re all sports fans, so we’ll all react the same way to the same situations. That being said, the difference is that we root for a team that isn’t made up of scum-sucking bastards. ;]
The major difference is we don’t go to their stadium or welcome them into ours with beer bottles, drunken belligerence, and cursing at kids.
I would normally rule that an anamoly, but I have been to three Mets-Phils games this year (in both parks) and have had the (dis)pleasure of sitting next to Phillies fans each time. Annoying at best.
chupacabra i’m hoping that the brew crew will take 3 outa 4 and we sweep the braves cuz the magic # would be 10 if my math is right
nope…the magic number would then be 8.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
yeah.. sounds about right— Its funny.. Mets are only up 3 1/2 with 17 to play and I feel a lot better of our chances than I felt at any point last Sept.. There is NO way Mets win a game like last night’s in Sept of 07..
point duely noted – i just had that feeling last night and tuesday nite that we would win just pelfrey not pitching into the 6th bothered me and aaron “you are killing me ” heilman giving up that 2 run shot jeez
last year when the Mets were up 7 with 17 to play I felt like they were invincible. I didn’t get worried they’d blow it until the lead got down to 2 games. This years team seems to be “different” but lets not forget, until the meltdown last year the Mets were looking pretty good. I think the main difference this year is the Phils don’t seem to be capable of winning every night like they did down the stretch last year. For the Mets the key is keep winning, that puts all the pressure on the Phils.
absolutely right eddie
Last 17 games the Mets went 5-12, The Phillies went 13-4. It aint over until it is clinched in my eyes.
I do see some major differences in this team this year though there are some similarities. I looked at the 2007 Schedule on ESPN of six games played within the last 17 against Washington the Mets went 1-5. The Nats averaged 9.5 runs per game over those 6 games. These past 2 games the Nats averaged 9 runs and the Mets still won both. This team is showing the fight to continually come back and pile on runs.
Last year after giving up a 6 run lead you knew the game was over and there was no chance they pulled through.
My only concern is the pitching. It has gotten us to this point but has been shaky lately. Ollie is due for a bad streak and Pelf is getting pushed to his innings limits. At least we have 8,000 pitchers in the BP
I could NOT disagree with you more. The lousy way they where playing and hearing Willie spout the same BS after every game made me sick and worried. I was watching the Phillies more praying that they would loose because I didnt feel confident that the METS could win. The season was laid out perfect for us all games against sub 500 teams and we could NOT win a game. And then it all came down to Tommy Glavine and the final game. 1/3 of the way into the first inning and it was over I switched over to see if the NAts could beat the Phillies and they where, until it fell apart and the Phillies won. Anybody that watched the 07 METS could see the writing on the wall and nothng was done to prevent it. Well in 2008 I am confident that we will win. A tight race keeps the team on its toes and will prevent them from sitting back and getting lax. LETS GO METS !!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!
The reason we feel better is that in 2008 the Mets and Phillies have completely swapped places.
Enough of the 7 games with 17 left…the “collapse” was a 4-month endeavor in which this team played lackluster, uninspried .500 baseball after getting out in front after a red-hot April and May.
This year, it’s the Phillies who have been a .500 club since June after the hot start, the Mets who are playing red hot baseball.
Everyone in Phillie-dom seems to think last year is going to repeat itself while completely ignoring the past 5 months, and the 5 months that led to Sept. 2007, and realizing how reversed they are.
Listen we’ve got a ton of work to do. Everyone is shouting about a magic number of 14….how is that exciting? To me it means we need to go 14-4 to control our destiny…so we’re hardly out of the woodes here. But these teams are playing to mirror images on 2007. Even the Degado resurgence is mirrored by Burrell’s unexpected reawakening last year….
i think if we win – whether its just the division or the whole enchillada this will be more satisfiying than if we won it all in 07 – our team has showed heart , shown the fans they cared and did’t just layed down and died when things were at its bleakest!
One worry . . . these last two sloppy games against the Nats remind me of the last two weeks of 2007 when the pitching broke down completely. It’s great that we *won* these two games, but Perez and Pelfrey can’t start giving us 3-to-5-inning outings now. We’re not likely to win every game in which we give up 8 or 10 runs.
i think we weren’t taking the nats seriously – i think they will be more focused against the egg in their shoe braves – this past series might be a wake up call about being complacent
Let’s keep the perspective that the bullpen was actually quite sharp in Tuesday’s game once Ollie came out. Smith, Schoenewies, Stokes, and Ayala slammed the door so the offense could come back.
As for Weds….Stokes definitely was off, but other than that most of the game was on Pelfrey and Heilman – who I quite honestly do not think is going to throw another meaningful pitch this season. As for Stokes he’s not used to pitching back to back.
Totally agree on Perez and Pelf, but lets hope it was just a blip. Love having Johan right back out there on regular rest after just two games!
i think they said aaron is battling a knee problen all season – he didnt want to use it as an excuse – kinda like scho last year
wow bumed out phillies fans!
Don’t Jump!!! Most of the Phillies’ fans I have encountered are pleasant and genuine fans of baseball. A small sample of idiots have given them a bad wrap. It ain’t over ’til it’s over. That goes for the Mets as well.
all the yankee fans i know are arrogant – even with their collapse (smilin big right now) phillie fans are just obnoxious
Bah. I have met way too many of that small sample, apparently.
(although Sunday night’s game I sat near two very pleasant Phollies phans. But I figured they are the small sample — because the rest of the phans I heard were annoying jerks…)
they were under 300 lbs gee?
Well said Flushing. I apprecaite your rationale towards us Phillie fans.
I have encountered many awesome Mets fans also. There are bad bunches in every fan base.
Show me a fan base without sin and I’ll eat my hat without salt.
The Rays. B/c you have to have a fan base before they can be jerks!!
Would you at least like some butter? :-)
mr dude when your bretheren come to “invade” our park i always am cordial and try to rib them with humor – in philly they are the opposite of me
With all due respect, there are just as many rambunctious Mets fans that go to Philly with the same intentions as those who go up to Shea. However, you can’t let a couple drunken idiots sum up several million people.
There is an obnoxious vocal miniority in every fan base and a couple bad apples can ruin the experience and perception towards everyone.
so true thats why u have myers btw dude do you wan’t amby burgo’s and we will take that hot blonde phillie ball girl?? j/k
Have to weigh in here – been to a bunch of Phils games at Shea and I also took the trip to Philly the night after that 8-7 debacle.
Phils fans – AND personnel – are generally brutal.
My philosophy on visiting another park is simple: wear your colors, cheer for your team LOUDLY, but don’t get in anyone’s face and don’t boo guys in their own house.
We were greeted in Philly by a guy working the info booth who instructed us to head for the third base gates, where the American Red Cross was giving lessons in how to avoid choking. (Har har.) A number of fan groups booed me and told me the Mets s–k, which is expected, but then they started yelling things at my six-year old son, which is ridiculous. Oddly we did alright in our upper deck seats – except when a little kid next to us (5 years old? 6, maybe?) started wishing death and damage to the Mets and their property. His father looked over at us and shut him up though.
For our part, we yelled like crazy when Delgado, Murphy, Schneider and co. took the game back for the Mets. We cheered “Let’s go Mets” on our way out of the building. That was about it.
Contrast that with the games here in NY. Every game, we saw loads of drunk dirtbags from Philly getting up in our faces, antagonizing their neighbors, picking fights, etc. I saw exactly one set of fans that didn’t fit the bill – a family with two young kids, decked out in their Phillies gear just watching the game. Felt bad for them honestly.
Utley and Burrell have been two great offensive forces for that team and all the fans do is harp on them. Philly fans are not only angry and bitter, but dumb as well.
kinda like how the yankee fan turned on melkey huh
not at all. Melky is not an offensive force by any stretch of the imagination
yeah but the fans loved him til he couldn’t hit or field lol
All I heard in 2007 was how Melky was going to be a “superstar.” What a joke. Fast-forward to 2008. Melky sucks and so do the Yankays.
you can say the same things about met fans ridiculing wright, reyes, beltran, delgado etc.
more delgado mota and heilmann
I agree with Rusty.. Different feel this season.. even missing our closer and our bullpen as shaky as theyve been.. I’m more confident in our chances every game because they battle.. Even after losing tough games this season.. they just rebound and come back next day ready to win…
thanks chupa – see i can be serious sometimes and make good points lol
Love the sense of entitlement — “We were promised a great team!!!” WAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!
people said the same thing here last year. why are we crowing when the mets havent won anything yet??
because the atmosphere is different from last year ghobot the manager isn’t benching reyes for lack of hustle our catcher is’t claiming racial faVORTISM – ALL IS CALM AND POSITIVE IN METSVILLE oops sorry bout the caps
Did I say there are no Met fans like this? There are thousands upon thousands of strident fans. So, you’re going to get a spectrum of behaviors. It ain’t rocket science.
so true
rocket surgery
brain farming??
I’ll never forget parent teacher conference waaaay back in 8th grade. I wasn’t doing well in Earth Science, so my dad took the liberty of delivering the unforgettable line, with a very loud voice, in front of all my friends’ parents: “It’s earth science, not brain surgery. It’s earth science.”
Ghobot is still waiting for the Mets to win the 2007 World Series like he kept predicting while watching the collapse last year…you can’t take him too serious…
Only the Eagles fans would bash a guy who is not only their best player but the best player at his position in all of baseball.
WOW.
Was Jimmy Rollins on the money about Phillies Fans or what??
“a blind squirrell will find a nut every once in a while ” – jerry “the king” lawler
Panties + Bunch = Dan Levy
He’s not too far off. The Phils HAVE a good bunch of players. They’re just not a TEAM.
wwjkws -(wonder what john kruk would say)
He would say that Randy Johnson is going to win 35 games as a Yankee.
he would say i was on nutra system and im still a fat kruck
No more like WWJKE (What Would John Kruk Eat?)
I think that C Manuel has been making some questionable moves. They should never have given Kendrick another start. And leaving in Romero to face Uggla — probably not the best idea.
Disagree, They are a team, they play hard, they want to win. They’re just not as good a team as the Mets. Plain and simple.
thank you. this post made my day.
I enjoy the posts everyday, but this is by far the best post since the post that johna was officially acquired.
hahahahah
that’s so funny, b/c as a paranoid mets fan I always think of Rollins and Utley and Howard and Burrell as scary opponents who rarely do any wrong
I’ll just say that it is great to watch Phillies fans turn on their own team. I can only speak for myself, but the only guys I truly wanted gone after last year were Delgado, Glavine, Mota, and Willie. 3 outta 4 ain’t bad and I’ve been pretty happy about be wrong on the 4th guy.
But to turn on a guy like Utley is, well, pretty disgraceful in my opinion. You don’t want him you say? How about Louie Mush and his contract, paid in full, for Utley?
there were plenty – PLENTY – of Mets fans who were ready to ship Reyes out with the garbage. I look at their fans and I see a reflection of us…many reasonable, and many lunatic reactionaries.
I just want to point out that there is no such thing as a jinx and I have absolutely no problem gloating, just as I have no problem eating my words if the Mets blow it.
Part of the reason I love sports is so I can make my friends feel terrible and kick them when they are down as their teams are losing, just as they would do to me.
I am SURE many people can relate.
Lets…Go…Mets.
hell weve been known to turn on our team see 1980-83 1992-95 and 02-04
Awwwwwwww….Poor Phillie fan is frustrated….cry me a freakin’ river.
Hey Seaver41, no wonder I can’t get that name! ;)
How funny is it to read that Phillies blog? Change Chase Utley to Reyes and the Phillies’ eighth inning guys to the Mets pen and the way their stars are playing with no leadership and you could be talking about us last year and early this year. Reading this confirms what I thought even before Willie was fired: that the Mets were going to win it this year.
From philly.com today:
Or this: Back in July, it was clear the Phillies needed to add a legitimate starting pitcher. All apologies to Joe Blanton, but they didn’t. Even with Myers’ impressive return to form after his minor-league psych-rehab stint, the Phillies have to start Jamie Moyer on short rest tonight and aren’t sure who will start Sunday.
That lack of reinforcement can deflate a team. These guys aren’t stupid. They look around and see a rotation that isn’t deep enough, a bullpen that is flagging, and it isn’t hard to figure out where the pressure falls. No wonder the hitters are pressing.
i think jose lima is still available :P
Utley for Castillo straight up . . . any takers? heck, we’ll even cover Castillo’s salary.
id prefer the ballgirl – she fields better :P
Also – this guy is pissed that they marketed the team as winning. What was their slogan going to be . . . “Come watch us play as we fail – the ballpark is nice, you might see a pop-up turn into an opposite field home run” ????
friedberg u from brooklyn originally?
Phillies fate lies this weekend in their own hands, they frankly have to take 3 of 4 from Milwaukee. If they can no ground on Milwaukee this weekend or worse lose ground they will once again be in a position of needing another team to help them.
If the Brewers win tonight the Phillies need to once again go 13-4 if the Mets only go 9-8 in the final 17 for both. Every win up the Mets put on the boards the next week increases the pressure on the Philies.
Know it was the same last year, but the Phillies this time did not sweep.
i hope the phils are phinished
I think this statement covers it all. We seem to put emphasis that this Mets team is different from last year. True. But the Phillies are also NOT the 2007 version either. They’ve lost a lot of fire too. They were simply motivated by winning the division, the Mets were not last year. This year, i think they thought it would be easy. Wasn’t!
Frankly, they would have to sweep all four games vs. the BeerMen to stay alive in any race. To them, losing even one game is unacceptable and puts even more pressure on Philly.
“Heart” and “guts” sound just as silly coming from Phillies fans as from us.
That is beautiful
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer fan base. Enjoy your September Phillies fans
So, I guess the Mike Schmidt approach to motivation has been rendered ineffective. Good riddance to him!
It’s funny, because allot of posters on here get on people for putting too much blame on Willie for last year’s collapse (Yeah, I know, Willie Who?) but reading comments on BeerL & Phillie Nation, even the Phillie Fan base believes this year Mets team is different and one of the main reason they think so is that Willie is not the manager. It’s interesting to see other market fan’s take on the Mets. I believe Manuel has a better “Pulse” on this team and will not allow a repeat of 07″ and apparently, Phillie Fans believe the same.;
Accordnig to ESPN.com’s baseball standnigs. As of right now the Mets have a 90.3% chance of making the playoffs and the Phillies have a 21.1% chance.
Oh yeah, the also give the Yankees a 0.1% chance. Hehehe
I have no idea how I missed this post before, but all I can say is that I LOVE it!
BAAAAAAAAAAAWAAAAAAAAAAAAA Philly Phans
to quote rush ” you can have a belief in some celestreal voice – even if you cannot decide you still have made a choice- you can believe in some phantom fears or mindless something something (lol) i will choose the path thats clear – i will choose freewill – no such thins as jinx is all i am saying
You’re right machinegun – we shouldn’t enjoy this at all. We should watch all 162 regular season games like robots with no emotion.
gobots- the walmart version of transformers !!
