According to the site Awful Announcing, Howie Rose will join Mark Grace on Saturday’s telecast of the Braves vs. Mets game on Fox.
…i will take howie rose over any of those fox commentators so i’m glad to hear this…it makes me wonder if he’s contemplating a move to t.v. play-by-play but i guess time will tell…

it’ll be interesting to hear such a huge hometown (mets) fan doing a nationally broadcast game.
who will be on the radio in howie’s place?
I’d guess Ed Coleman.
that’s the downside
OH, this is tragic. I so hate Fox. If you’re not in the geographic vicinity, you have no way of getting the game. And now I won’t even have Howie. Lord have mercy.
Two things are interesting:
1. That my previous post was deleted; and
2. That McCarthy is doing the Phillies game on Fox.
Is this a one shot deal? I could not find any info on it.
maybe fox finally realized that nobody likes the the folks the get to do national broadcasts. with football season underway, maybe they decided to try something new.
i’ve thought for sometime that it woulkd be a good idea to pair a play-by-play guy from one team with a color-commentator from the other.
i hate watching nationally televised games where the broadcasters know next to nothing about a team i’ve see 12-15 times in a season by Aug/Sept, let alone a team I’ve seen play 130-140 times.
Mark Grace? Oh dear christ…
Ugh…
I bet Fox is regretting making this a nationally televised game as well.
My thoughts exactly. My friend is a Dback fan and watches a lot of the games. He hates Mark Grace.
My sentiments exactly… Mark Grace is a pompous over the top annoying game caller and I hope Howie talks circles around him on national TV.
What’s the general feeling about Rose? As an Islanders and Mets fan, I love his voice and how he calls games. One of the best if you ask me.
Rose is an A+ PBP announcer
Howie Rose has always bugged me. I know I’m supposed to love him, but I find him too damn nerdy.
As for his TV career — a face for radio if ever I’ve seen one.
howie is excellent. he’s like gary cohen without the little digs or attitude.
Howie is actually a Ranger fan. If you hear the excitement on his PBP call of the Mateau call in ‘94 for the Rangers there is no way that guy is not a Ranger fan.
it must suck for him to do islander games even though he has a history with the franchise too.
Early in his Mets radio career, Howie Rose bugged me. He just didn’t have the maturity yet to be a good announcer. He had a terrible HR call — “It’s a goner!” — which he mercifully ditched. He just sounded to me like a wannabe.
But now I think he’s great. He’s fluid, his signature line — “Put it in the books!” — is good, he’s got a good radio voice, and, above all, he’s got a brain. His throwaway lines are often pretty witty. Like referring to the Dodgers as “The Los Angeles Dodgers of Brooklyn” or whatever. And he’s not beyond being critical of the Mets.
YES!!!! i love rose on TV
btw, boscov, Howie was a rangers play by play guy for many years
I wil tell you what – when Howie filled in for Gary a few years ago when Gary had appendicitis or something, I thought it was the perfect match. I like Gary with Keith and Ronnie, but I guarantee if Howie had been in that spot people would have loved that tandem even more.
Gary was perfect on radio – his over-calling was hidden and he did an amazing job doing what radio announcers are supposed to do – creating a visual picture in your mind of what’s going on.
None of this says Howie is not great on the radio and Gary not great on TV, but I think they’d be even better switched up. Coming from the days of Fran Healy, it’s a good problem to have.
yeah but now wayne hagin is our problem to have haha
i have no problem with wayne hagin. he’s hokey and it’s a fresh change of pace.
those bitching about hagin need to listen to dumb and dumber doing skankee games on wabc and marvel how quickly you change your tune.
his hr calls are hideous and thanks i’ve listened to those morons too
One of my favorite Howie lines when he was filling in for Gary was when the bases were loaded with Reyes, Milledge and LoDuca and he said something to the tune of, Reyes, great speed, Milledge, great speed. LoDuca, great guy.
I just shivered when i read Fran Healy
Does that mean no Joe Buck? because that guy sounds almost as dead as the phillie’s announcer…
Most if not All of Fox’s Play by Play guys are tied into doing Football this weekend so they are unable to do the baseball games. I think this is a great job by Fox for getting the local talent. Mainly I am thrilled that the Mets are playing the Braves meaning Fox would not have considered to put Chip Carey on the games because he works for TBS.
Ah that’s why…
He’s one of the best in the biz and not just thought that way by Met fans but even Francessa and members of the national media think the same. I for one hope he stays on the radio but could not blame him if he were to take a big gig on TV. Well deserved and a pleasure to listen to on my treks up and down I-81 to and from Syracuse to Binghamton for work.
yes… but can he replace all on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN? god awful!!
remind me not to listen to the radio broadcast on saturday then…has anyone heard anything about the the situation with the mets and WFAN…are they going to be back on the network or what…they better
I don’t get the opportunity to listen to the radio broadcasts of the game that much, but when I do I’ve always enjoyed Howie’s calling of the game. I’ll be interested to hear how that translates on FOX.
looks like there might actually be a reason to watch this game over football now
When I grew up, and when I knew I couldn’t hit a curveball… I wanted to be Howie Rose. I emulated him, I wanted to go to Queens College and everything. “Put it in the books” and “put a circle around that one” are the greatest one-liners ever.
It’s also nice to hear “true” fans call the team’s games. Howie grew up a Met fan like all of us, and he tells wonderful stories. He is by far my favorite broadcaster. We are lucky to have him, can you imagine having John Sterling calling our games?
When I listen to other announcers, I often wonder how they keep their jobs. I guess I am spoiled with Howie Rose, Gary, Keith, and Ron, and Ed Coleman. Lord knows that the FAN is killing everyone with Wayne Hagin. Hagin makes everyone he works with look like an all star. My least favorite line Hagin has ever said (and there are a lot) is:
“Tatis looks up to catch the fly and as he does little specks of water falling from the sky fall into his eyes otherwise known as rain.”
Seriously. What the heck is going on there?
Likewise for Fran Healy. Geesh those two guys are atrocious.
Rose did TV play by play for a long time before Cohen. I always liked him.
For anyone who uses mlb.tv and doesn’t know, you can now listen to SNY broadcasts on ANY game, home or away. All I can say is: THANK GOD.
I’ve always advocated having home team announcers paired up on national telecasts. One of the most frustrating aspects of watching FOX and ESPN games is hearing guys who have barely seen the Mets all season speak total nonsense about the team. How great would it be to have, say, a Mets-Phils game called by Gary Cohen and Harry Kalas with commentary from Keith Hernandez and Larry anderson.
yea, why networks don’t do stuff like this is beyond me. I feel like it would potentially cost them less money too. Oh well.
I’ve always like Howie Rose, but not quite as much as Gary Cohen. Both are very good however. We really are spoiled, I think we’ve easily got the best collection of on-air talent in the league. There’s a few great broadcasters out there (nobody in sports is better than Vin Scully, IMO), but the Mets have more accumulated talent than anyone.
You wanna talk about spoiled? Not only do I have two brilliant announcers covering the Mets, I also get to have the pleasure of hearing Doc Emrick’s voice throughout the regular season with the Devils. Life is good, indeed.
devils. yawn.
In the words of David Putty: “LET’S GO DEVILS!”
Gary Cohen frequently states that it is great to see the Metsblog site run by a big fan. Everytime I hear Gary say that I want to tell him that the same applies to him and rose.No one in the MLB has more pasionate TV and radio announcers, Cohen is well versed and well spoken, and the same appiles to Howie Rose. WFAN has not been the same since their “break up” and no one calls a better AM game now then Rose. Not a fan of Wayne Hagin at all.
For you folks on this board, please dont forget that Ron Darling did a WB11 broadcast with David Cone this year during the serioes at Yankee Stadium.
In other words, Howie Rose in New York Mets Radio Baseball. he did well filling in last year for Cohen when he had abdominal surgery but he is a radio guy. He dialect and use of language is outmatched by none.
Why does Boston get the White Sox/Detroit game? WHO CARES? The Fox games should be limited to their time zones only.
Hagin is starting to grow on me, and while he does seem to have good insight, I’m thinking he’s talking more than Howie now, minutes-wise.
I LOVE Howie Rose! He is funny, concise, and informative. I really hope he doesn’t leave us.
But, as a fellow Bayside boy, I wish him all the best.
Howie rules.
video killed the radio star.
don’t think howie is going anywhere. i would think that opening citi field would be too important to him.
Howie Rose is awesome, my parents always say he’s like an old school play by play guy. I like McCarthy much more than Hagin but Hagin is getting better. As for FOX, Joe Buck may be the worst announcer ever and all I can say is it’s a good thing his Daddy was involved in the bigs cause he shouldn’t even have a job. Joe Buck sounded like he was sleeping when Endy Chavez made ‘The Catch’ and would get excited every time Albert Pujols even touched the ball in the series, or any Cardinal. I hate Joe Buck
There is no team in the game that does it better than Gary, Keith and Ron, particularly Gary. He is clearly a fan, but he calls it like a pro. None of this homer crap – nothing bugs me more than a play-by-play guy who sits there on-air going, “c’mon ball, get outta here!” Close second are the guys who get up and get loud when the home team draws so much as a walk, but then describe a homer by the visitors like they’re reading stock prices. With Gary, you hear the excitement, and his voice tells you who he’s rooting for, but you also get an exciting call when the other side hits one in the gap.
Everything about Gary above pretty much applies to Howie Rose.
As for Wayne Hagen, sorry buddy, could you save the poetry for after the play is dead? I’m getting tired of hearing him yammer on for 15 seconds about “little drops of water” and “the New York night “and yada yada and still not knowing whether an out has been recorded.
…and that link is not working.
