Last night, in only his second
appearance in 10 days, Aaron Heilman let up a walk and a two-run home run in two-thirds of an inning.
Jerry Manuel said yesterday that Heilman has been pitching with tendonitis in his left knee, pretty much since spring training.
However, Heilman later told the New York Post, among others, that it has only affected a handful of his appearances this season.
Last night, with his stolen base in the third inning, Jose Reyes passed Mookie Wilson to become the team’s all-time steals leader with 282.
By the way, Reyes is batting .182 in eight games this September, sparking fear among media and some fans that he is destine to repeat his miserable performance from last September.
Reyes, before the game, talking to reporters, said:
“I didn’t have a good September last year, so this year is the year. You don’t worry about what happened last year because this is going to be the year for us. We have too good a team to let that happen again.”
For more on Reyes, read Ted Berg’s column for SNY.
David Wright hit a double, two singles and a home run with three RBI during last night’s win against the Nationals.
SNY’s Ron Darling explained earlier in the week that Wright was ‘In Between,’ which is to say pitchers have adjusted to him, while he had yet to recalibrate and adjust to them.
So, Wright spent time working with Howard Johnson prior to Tuesday’s game, in the batting cage, in an effort to improve his timing at the plate.
On August 12, I wrote the following on MetsBlog.com:
“I wonder, is it ‘all or nothing,’ when it comes to Wright’s offensive production. Not that there is anything wrong with that, assuming other people in the lineup are performing, it’s just, if this is what he is, it would make me less frustrated when he’s struggling, because I know it will be short lived and he’ll be hot again next week.”
For instance, Wright is 6 for 8 since his extra batting practice session with Howard Johnson.
However, in the 13 games before that he hit .220, and in the 15 games before that he hit .377, and in the 20 games before that he hit .255, and so on and so on.
Hopefully, Tuesday was the start of the big September run.
