Quote: Mentally, Pelfrey Wasn’t In It
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 11, 2008 9:58 am

Last night, Mike Pelfrey broke a streak of five consecutive ‘Quality Starts,’ by letting up five runs, eight hits, a home run and two walks against the Nationals.

Pelfrey, on his outing, speaking to reporters following last night’s game, said:

“I don’t want to make too big of a deal out of it…You know, obviously, I didn’t have it.  Physically I didn’t feel great, I think there was even a time when nobody was on and I threw a pitch from the stretch.  You know, so, mentally I wasn’t in to it either.  The best thing to come out of it tonight is that we won…

“I felt like I let the team down, but the offense scored a lot of runs and they did a great job, as did the guys in the bullpen, we won and it’s huge…I think that’s the sign of being a great team, picking each other up.”

The Mets are 1–2 in Pelfrey’s last three starts.

I still love Big Pelf! And, we gotta play with the team we have…so I’m even reserving my normally nasty comments about AFH! for another day…Pelfrey has done more than anyone thought he would this season, so Let’s Go METS!

  2. Reyes es el Rey says:

When a Met on your fantasy team pitches like that there are no words for the pain you feel.

  3. CaseStreet says:

I’m not concerned about our top three, but if we make it to October, who can we count on besides them? Hopefully Pedro will have an extra serving of Mangu.

at this rate Santana will have to start every playoff game…

All these inning are probably catching up with Pelfrey. I had advocated skipping him (or pushing him back a couple of days) with these two off days this week and his start being against the Nats. Now they really have no other choice but to keep rolling him out there on normal rest.

I know they won but this bothers me. I am a big pelfrey fan, but after the collapse last year, I don;t want to hear about pelfrey not being mentally in the game.
I am sure he will rebound and be lights out next game, but that comment stings a bit considering it is spetember in the middle of a pennant race.

    • jedimynd says:

It bugs me too. I’d rather hear that physically he just didn’t have it than mentally he couldn’t get up for this game..especially in September.

His focus has to remain the same even if it’s the Nats and knowing the Phillies lost.

    • hyperion4 says:

Bad choice of words by Pelf. I doubt that he was unable to get himself “up” for the game. He probably was talking about mentally fatigued — he’s never thrown this many innings.

  5. Coolpapabell says:

The little issue he had with Dukes was funny. Elija Dukes is crazy. Not “oh you so crazy” crazy, but certifiabely for real crazy.

  6. rogasm says:

I think the whole thing with Dukes kind of got to him.

    • jamie says:

I felt that way, too. He seemed rattled after that. And I think it would’ve said a whole lot if Pelf’s very next pitch had been an inside fastball, instead of a slider two feet outside.

    • gameball says:

Pelf wasn’t able to spot his sinker from the first inning. He was working up in the zone and getting hit hard all game. I don’t think Dukes affected his game at all. It certainly didn’t scare him off pitching inside to Dukes in his next AB.

  7. cval says:

Seems like he might be hitting a bit of a wall after pitching more innings that he ever has. Hopefully they will have enough breathing room to give him a few extra days before his next start.

    • ksuth says:

With not a day off until the end of the season and no one to really step up in Maine’s spot, I highly doubt this…

    • kistics says:

I think the next big step for Pelf is trying to bounce back from his bad performance last night. Hopefully he bounces back without a problem and not try to do too much, which make him pitch up in the zone rather than keeping his sinker down.

    • Nate W. says:

actually yesterday would have been the day to skip him.

Anyone think the Mets do any worse last night with Niese starting?

They had wanted to skip Pelf a couple weeks ago, they have two off days this week, and they sent him back out there on four days rest. Doesnt say much for what they think of Pedro or anyone behind him on the depth chart.

      • cval says:

That’s a good point. If they had skipped him last night then he would get two extra days and santana would get one extra day and both would likely be a little fresher for the last two weeks. I think if they had any confidence in Pedro they probably would have done that.

  8. kistics says:

I felt bad for Manny Acta after watching the game last night. Having to deal with immature a-wholes like Dukes in a losing team like that. Also he seems to have absolutely no control over his players. I won’t be surprised he gets fired after this season.

    • hyperion4 says:

It’s really the fault of Bowden, who is a horrible GM. He loves to pick up talented players who are also bad actors. No one could manage some of these guys. I think that Milledge is nowhere near the lunatic that Dukes is, but he definitely walks his own way and I doubt that he listens very well.

  9. Lightweis says:

Can somebody sum up what happened with Dukes, for those of us who couldn’t watch the game?

    • kistics says:

Dukes hit a HR at his first at bat and next at bat, Pelf threw inside. No intension of hitting him or anything. It was just fastball inside, but Dukes got all upset and had pleasant words exchanged between him and Pelf.

Next time up, Pelf hit him (I didn’t think it was intentional) and Dukes clearly was not happy but didn’t do anything.

9th inning, as he was walking back to the dugout, he had friendly conversations and gestures with the fans near the dugout. Just total display of immaturity

    • Nightlife says:

Dukes hit a homer off Pelfrey in his first AB. Next AB Pelf starts him with a belt high inside fastball that tails in a little too much, doesn’t really come close to hitting Dukes at all. Dukes steps towards the mound and shouts some words at Pelfrey. Game is delayed for a couple minutes while guys from the Nats try to calm Dukes down. Next inning Dukes does get hit by a pitch on a 3-2 to count, but it wasn’t intentional at all, doesn’t react much. In Dukes last AB he grounds out, crowd is booing him, he gestures to the fans, goes in the dugout swipes a bunch of water cups some going on a Nats player.

      Dude is crazy.

      • kistics says:

Good thing I saw on Pelf was that he did not back down as Dukes was mouthing off. Pelf walked towards him as they were exchanging words. I saw the same thing when Pelf had that incident with Ross in FL.

    • CitizenSnips says:

Pelfrey threw a pitch a little inside so it was almost behind Dukes but it was clearly accidental and wasn’t even close to hitting Dukes. Dukes took it personally and started giving Pelfrey words and nasty looks. Pelf did the awesome thing and took a few steps forward. Unfortunately Dukes doubled so he spoke with his bat but after he got out in the 9th (or scored in the 8th I forget) fans were shouting at him from atop the dugout and he just waved his arms in the “bring it” fashion.

  10. Nightlife says:

Pelf’s innings pitched are up there. I hope this doesn’t adversely affect him next season or the rest of this season.

    • Gland says:

If I were Acta I would have sat Dukes down after that ouburst.

Not only is that team not very good but they don’t seem to be coached well and they are have a lot of punks.

Did anyone notice Anderson Hernandez celebrating on the bench after one of Guzman’s home runs? He had is arm raised in the air and he did a little dance.

Larry Anderson would have suggested a “bow tie” for him.

      • Nate W. says:

how can the Mets complain about that? AH learned how to celebrate in 2006 from Jose Reyes?

The thing that apalls me in AH’s batting average? You would think the guys can actually hit, why didnt he do that as a Met?

btw, the HP ump not calling time for AH on that quick pitch by Ayala is a direct result of Milledge and Dukes being a-holes to the ump the entire game. Costs the whole team when they pull antics like that.

        • Gland says:

You are right, AH did learn his moves from Reyes. What he didn’t learn is that those moves may not be appropriate when you are 127 games out of first place.

I wasn’t saying that the Mets were annoyed; I would imagine that they couldn’t care less. I just found it amusing. It doesn’t seem like Acta has a very good handle on his merry band of thugs.

  11. therealsince86 says:

OK guys someone help me feel better. I just projected the rotation until the last game and I have Pedro going. Please tell me I am wrong because I see Glavine II.

Also, I see 7 more starts by Pedro and an unknown including 2 of the last 3 games. That scares the hell out of me.

    • backinbusiness says:

gotta wrap up the division — or the way the brew crew is playing, a playoff spot — before that FLA series or the met fan base will die of agita.

  12. Gina says:

I am slightly worried about Pelfrey’s, since he’s never pitched this many innings. Not only are we counting on him, Maine did and Pedro being a ?, for us to make the post-season, but we’re going to need him big time, next year if we can’t bring back Ollie and/or bring in another quality starter to be the pitcher he was for most of the season.
