During a chat for ESPN.com, Keith Law had the following to say when asked if Bobby Parnell could be a good option out of the bullpen.
“Yes, I think that’s his future, although his breaking ball isn’t good yet. He and {Brian} Stokes are the best two pure arms in that Mets’ pen.”
In 29 games this season, split between Triple-A and Double-A, Parnell was 12-8 with 114 strikeouts and only 66 walks in 148 innings pitched.
…with the current state of Aaron Heilman’s ineffectiveness to say the least, i would love to see what parnell could bring to the table…i know Jerry Manuel has been insistent on using veterans in key spots down the stretch and i get that, however he may have to dip into that well soon…

Dip Away!
If the Mets are gonna try out new guys to see if they are gonna be on the post-season roster over Heilman or Duaner…it has to be Al Reyes, not Parnell,
We can try out Parnell in 2009, Id rather have the veteran arm that has closing experience on my roster in the playoffs….KRod in 2002 is the extreme exception here and he was up at 20 then, how old is Parnell now?
Just turned 24 on Monday.
Really? Wow I thought he was much younger.
heilman doesn’t belong on this team anymore. He was great for a while, but slowly has been hurting this team more than helping. If you know someone is gonna blow it when u put him out there, why would you continue to do so? Parnell and Stokes should be pitching more and even on this playoff roster. Heilman is too mentally out of it and the fans cannot see him doing any good to help this team.
Turn the page. Lets go
Why is this posted under Brandon Knight?
As long as Parnell is here, we should try him out. The same goes for Al Reyes.
I’m sorry, but did you really write “only 66 walks in 148 innings pitched”?!?!
on what planet is 66 walks in 148 innings not considered a lot?
Dice-K has 88 walks in 151 IP.
Yes, and Hank Aaron used to bat cross-handed, so if there’s an exception to be found, let’s cite it as proof that bad stats are really good stats.
just saying that walks isn’t the best indicator. why not look at era?
Because era is a worse indicator.
Because era isn’t all that great an indicator either. Look at K’s per 9 innings and Hr’s allowed…BTW 66 walks in 148 innings is 4.01 BB/9 IP…That’s pretty high. The 114 K’s amounts to 6.93 per 9 IP.
i didn’t mention anything about Parnell’s walks “indicating” anything. i was just amused that Eddy used the qualifier “only” when mentioning Parnell’s 66 walks. that’s all. i think it’s ludicrous to insinuate that 66 walks isn’t a lot for 148 IP.
That’s a good point. And you are right, that is a lot of walks.
You beat me to it. That’s a lot of walks.
Its not so much he’s afraid to use the extra arms in big spots but more so that he’s afraid to introduce the new arms in a big spot. If reyes or parnell could get some exposure first and if they do well, than Manuel would be more inclined to use them in a big spot. this is just like when stokes first came up. and now he’s coming in as our set-up guy.
point is…parnell and al reyes need to get a chance somewhere sometime b/c neither me or jerry know what they can do to help us and at this point using aaron “dead-horse” heilman just aint cutting it.
heilmam’s inneffectivness
i have always tried to support heilman but he has been worse than innefective, he has been horrible just plain horrible
this wasnt the time in the season to try and boost someone’s confidence, heilman needs to go
and as long as we have someone good to replace him, someone who wouldnt turn out liek mota or heilman than im okay with them
Heilman just cant be put in games anymore. I actually liked Manual’s thinking trying to get him in a lower pressure situation early in the game up 7-5 and we see how that turned out.
This isn’t that hard. Its easy to replace Heilman because it doesn’t take much to not give up a two run homer every time you pitch. Anyone in that pen would be more effective than Heilman.
I like the idea of Reyes and I like the idea of Rincon. I don’t like the idea of Parnell yet because he isn’t K-Rod. In all honesty, I think Maine is going to take on that role soon.
When commenting about Luis Ayala as the closer, Jerry Manuel said something to the effect that it;s his role “for now” but there was no room for 3-game allowances for bad results.
The same must be true for Heilman. I actually feel bad for Aaron. Longest tenured Met, and has, on occasion, been very effective as an 8th-inning guy, but his confidence is clearly shot. A stretch run for a pennant is not the time to worry about someone’s ego, or hurt feelings.
Heilman has been afforded ample opportunity to rectify his problems. He should never see the ball in anything but a mop-up situation, and his spot on the (hopefully) playoff roster needs to go to an arm on which we can depend.
Whether that arm is attached to the body of Parnell, or someone else, now is the time to be exploring the options.
If Stokes continues to shine, let’s just all pretend he came over in the Kazmir deal.
The deal will still be awful, but we’ll at least have something to show for it….
We already do, Omar.
