Read: Today in the NL East

by David Pinto on September 13th, 2008 at 11:20 am

Jorge Cantu hit home run number 25 Friday night, making the Marlins the first team with four infielders with at least 25 home runs each.

The Brewers-Phillies rainout caused some strategic maneuvering by both teams.  Philadelphia wanted to move the game to Monday, an off day for both teams.  The would allow them to pitch Brett Myers on full rest.  They needed the Brewers’ permission, however, as that would cause them to not get a day off in a three week period.  The Brewers opted for the double header, and the Phillies then decided to pitch Myers on short rest.

A win for Tim Redding today sets a new career high at 11.  Since joining the Nationals, Redding is 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA against Florida.

Jo-Jo Reyes last won a game in June.   Since that win, he posted a 6.14 ERA, walking more batters than he struck out.

Note: Johan and Niese today, Pedro on Monday

by Matthew Cerrone on September 13th, 2008 at 9:08 am

Johan Santana will pitch Game 1 today against Mike Hampton.

Pedro Martinez, who had been scheduled to pitch Game 2, has been pushed back to Monday, and, instead, Jon Niese will start tonight.

In other words, expect the following rotation over the next week:

Saturday: Santana vs. Braves
Saturday: Niese vs. Braves
Sunday: Oliver Perez vs. Braves
Monday: Martinez at Nationals
Tuesday: Mike Pelfrey at Nationals
Wednesday: TBA
Thursday: Santana at Nationals

The buzz from Shea suggests Nelson Figueroa will likely get the start on Thursday, though that has yet to be determined.
