In Game 1 yesterday, Johan Santana pitched in to the eighth inning, and was charged with two runs on nine hits while striking out four.
He left with the lead, though the team eventually lost.
…it seems to me every that time jerry sends santana back out for that extra inning, santana leaves to a standing ovation, but with no outs and runners on base – just like yesterday…
In a win during Game 2, Carlos Beltran had three hits, including a home run, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.
Beltran is now batting .285, with 103 RBI, 38 doubles, 21 stolen bases, and a .374 OBP.
According to Kevin Kernan in the New York Post, the Mets should thank the Yankees for passing on Beltran and Santana, thus allowing them to end up on the Mets.
…or, maybe, the Yankees made an offer to the Twins for santana and to Scott Boras for beltran, and both the Twins and boras preferred the Mets package instead…you know, the Twins and Boras made the choice, on their own, to pass on the Yankees and go with the Mets, who ultimately made a more lucrative offer…
…i guess it just depends on how you look at it…
…nevertheless, forgive me if i do not send Brian Cashman a thank you card at the end of the season…i’m sure he’ll understand…
According to Adam Rubin, in a report for the Daily News, “Brandon Knight is expected to get a spot start on Wednesday in Washington.”
…i had a feeling it would be Nelson Figueroa, but knight does make more sense in that a) he has been used less, b) figgy seems to be part of the bullpen now, in a way that Jerry Manuel probably doesn’t want to mess with…
In his only start for the Mets this season, in July against the Cardinals, Knight let up four runs through five innings.
Chipper Jones purchased an $869 pair of orange seats from Shea Stadium, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Jones, as quoted in the report, said:
“I’m sure a bunch of people who sat in those seats have called me a bunch of names over the years, but that’s all right – they’ll soon reside in my basement.”
…there are players i hate, and then there are players like chipper, who i hate, but respect, if for no other reason than he gets it…he understands that baseball should be fun, it’s entertainment, he understands the idea of rivalry…and, while it frustrates the hell out of me, i appreciate it, all while hoping he fails miserable…
In his second major-league start, Jon Niese let up no runs and six hits while striking out seven and walking two, through eight innings, in a win against the Braves yesterday.
…the biggest difference between this start and his first start, against the Brewers, was that he looked significantly more comfortable and confident yesterday against the Braves…he looked like a nervous wreck, and pitched like it, against the Brewers…
…i’m sure having a few thousand people chanting, ‘Lets Go Niese,’ will help you get pumped up, too…
Niese, speaking to reporters after the game, said:
“With 50,000 fans chanting your name it’s a dream come true. Every kid in America dreams about that. The fans in New York are some of the best fans in the world. It gives you that little extra push when you’ve got that many people behind you.”
According to the Journal News, “Niese became the youngest Mets’ player to win a game since Bill Pulsipher in 1995.”
