Matt, do us all a favor and take down that Magic Number. I know you think the Phillie Phanatic chasing Mr. Met is cute and all, but please don’t jinx it for the 2nd year in a row.
Sincerely,
EVERY MET FAN
+1
Obviously we didn’t learn anything from last year. We know what the number is, we can keep track of it ourselves.
I put a magic number up in my bedroom when I was a kid in 1986 and they did not collapse. Matt can do the same and it does not affect anything.
The only thing that makes a jinx come true is your belief in it.
Do you people stay home on Friday the 13th??
Let’s face the facts people. After today’s meltdown the reality is that this team, despite the starting nine they put out every day is not going anywhere with a bullpen that cannot be counted on to do any kind of consistent work. Even if they somehow stumble into the playoffs (which is not going to happen) is it realistic to believe that this pen will be able to face a Ramirez in a clutch situation in the playoffs and come out unscathed? Wait till next year.
I love Jerry but what can you expect when you keep bringing the same guys in day after day. How about Al Reyes, Rincon, et al – at least a different look. And Church hasn’t done very much and Castilo ugh!!
you love Jerry? why? give me 1 good reason this
guy should be manager next year???
give me 1 reason he shouldn’t…. when are people gonna asign some responsibility to the players and realize that pinch hitters and double switches are meaningless if you don’t have players that can get the job done? you really think this team needs a new manager? what we need is some corner outfielders who can stay healthy and a bullpen that doesn’t give games away
It will be a great story if the Mets can make the playoffs with this Bull Pen (i.e. making it with a closer that was a middle relief guy for the worst team in the league).
First, with respect to Easley, I was wondering why he was not starting today, and more importantly why he did not PH for castillo in the ninth. Now I know.
Second, as for today’s game, why bat Tatis for Church (when Church is a power bat)? I realize it was lefty against lefty if Church stayed in, but Church is a power bat. Instead, I would have let Church hit, and then bat Tatis for Castillo.
I have not clue why Castillo was permitted to bat. What has he done since the Florida comeback? And even then all he had was a slap single.
Third, did any one see the pregame honors… at shea Mets gave out their Sterling Awards. Players like Wilmer Flores, Carp, Evans and Murph and Niese (i dont remember the rest) were honored.
Fourthly, as for puting Murph at second, while I love his bat, I question is range. At least from a running the base perspective, he does not look like a fast man. What about Wilmer Florez? He is 17 and a SS. What about puting him at 2b?
Fifthly, Ayala pitched in a non-save situation on Saturday night, why? They wheel him out today and did not have it. I agree we need to start to use other pitchersr (more for last night not today.
Finally, as for the Count down. I vote for taking it down. I am not a fan of it and I admit I am supersticious. Its Cerrone’s site, but whether I come here or not, its up, and I think its a jinx
Agreed. The magic number is just a reminder of how far we still have to travel to get where we want to go. It’s like taking a long trip with the kids shouting, “Are we there yet?”
It’s not a jinx, it’s just a kick in the nuts on days like this.
And a reason for Phillie fans to laugh at us. Again.
Take it down. It’s lame to begin with…or do you want to wait until we’re back in 2nd before you do?
Exactly what I signed on to say… Matt the jinx!!!
Please take it down. It serves no purpose other than to remind us of the misery of being Mets fans.
I agree, please take it down. if you think we’re superstitious, I am not afraid to say I am superstitious.
Magic numbers are for teams like the Angels who clinch early. Or teams like the ‘86 Mets who were inevitably going to win. It’s idiotic to talk about a magic number of 13 when there are 14 games left to play.
Exactly.
“It’s idiotic to talk about a magic number of 13 when there are 14 games left to play.”
Exactly, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Take that stupid thing down.
Yup, completely agree. It was posted WAY too early with not much of a lead in the division…
Yes. A magic number in this team’s situation is not so magical. Looks like we’re hoping to back into the playoffs. Take it down. Especially with the f***ing Phanatic stalking Mr. Met.
I’m not really superstitious. It’s just painful to see it at a time like this.
Hey, if the end up pulling a rabbit of their collective, erm, hats, great. But if they blow it once again, then you gotta pull that thing down in shame.
Just take it down now.
Agreed take it down
TAKE DOWN THE DAMN STUPID NUMBER NOW!!!
i dont mind the magic number, but change the picture
take it down. I would hate to never visit this site this time next year because of this torture.
or ever again
agreed, please matt…if for nothing else, just because it’s a reminder of last year and most of us see it and automatically think that worst is about to happen…please matt!
FIRE OMAR!!!!!!!! DUMP CASTILLO!!!!!!!!!!!! KILL HIELMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DUMP SHOWINBALLS!!!!!!! DEPORT FEILICIANO!!!!!!!!!!AND SEND AYALA BACK TO WASHINGTON
AND TAKE DOWN THAT NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!!11
LMAO
Luis Castillo is the jinx, The Mets have never won with him.
You A Reyes deniers, check the record books. This kid is a winner, unlike Castillo. He may have better ops or whatever, but he absolutely kills the METS. Kills them.. kilss them
I hate Metsochists like Matt. You’d have to be crazy to quit your job and run a blog about this team. So the Phanatic magic number doesn’t surprise me.
I Blame Chris Carlin!
We should just boycott this friggin sit if this punk won’t take that # down!!!!!!
You boycotting this site would be a very welcome development for the adults who like coming here.
Matt’s not a “punk” and your posts are pretty much all ridiculous drivel.
people have been complaining for days over the magic # and he still hasn’t taken it down. Where the hell have you been?
Well, Rollins, I guess I keep forgetting—whose site is this again? And how much do you and I pay to come here? And how hard is it for you to boycott?
And I really love your idea of Heilman, Schoeneweis, and Castillo for Holliday, which you posted like 3 times on another thread. A GM job will soon be yours.
Sorry, but the Met-hatred that this site brings out after a game like today is truly vile, and while I try to avoid it, today your silly comments really caught my eye.
Whatever your opinions, you come off like a 15 year old loser by calling Cerrone a “punk” and yelling to “KILL” and “DEPORT” people. You are entitled to your ideas and opinions of course, as I am required by human decency to tell you how ridiculous and childish they are.
It sure was a joke of a trade idea! And what does Ayala have to do with any of it? The entire bullpen is a bum.
Of course I hate today’s loss, but are you a Met fan or just a person who enjoys reading their own rants on a public message board?
Stop making obnoxious, rude, inane posts and I will gladly stop calling you out!
how are they rude? they aren’t attacking anyone in the thead and why would you be caring about my posts in a thread of 400 people. You just have way too much time on your hands, and yes I am 15 and what are you 35, don’t you have better things that you should be doing?
You know, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind you are a child. You might not be attacking anyone in the thread but you sure are making the run at Matt. W/o his blog you wouldn’t have anywhere to go to post your frustration and inane trades.
‘Youth is wasted on the young’.
Meaning, you can’t possibly have had much adversity in your young life to have this be the biggest disappointment so far. If this is the biggest thing you’ve got to complain about – some damn magic number – consider yourself lucky.
You’ve have a right to your opinion. But you don’t even know Matt and you’re calling him a ‘punk’ b/c of a graphic? Get a grip, dude.
“the Met-hatred that this site brings out after a game like today is truly vile, ”
The only vile thing we saw today was the Met bullpen.
no, but really 90% of the people on this site want the # taken down and he’s not doing it. This thread is controlled by the people
So how’s the 10th grade treating you?
hows living with your mother at age 35 treating you?
yeah. no words to describe this loss
take down the Magic #. i mean, were 1.5 up. not 12 up.
Matt take the Magic Number down. This isn’t about jinxes its about that there is a very good reality we won’t remain in first place. So take it down!
lol I like how this is a post about Damion Easley and everyone’s talking about the magic #. We should notice that this is actually serious news cause we’re gonna be seeing slappy play everyday if Easley’s hurt.
i wonder what happened to argenis. i miss him.
he was basically slappy with better defense, we need to get a much better 2nd baseman next year. Maybe move Murphy over there, and get a big free agent bat for the outfield
the mets are planning on playing murphy at 2B in the arizona fall league
cool. Finally let’s dump mcslappy
METS SUCK, JETS SUCK. WHAT ELSE IS NEW?
matt, take down the magic number! you’re jinxing it!
This wouldn’t be such a big deal if Castillo was good but he is terrible. If Easley goes down, play Reyes. Easley though hit into way too many DP’s. TAKE DOWN THE MAGIC NUMBER.
This is really terrible news.
Yeah, take it down. It’s not a matter of jinxing, it’s that you’re torturing us.
If the number is not down by tuesday I’m gone till the playoffs. i want to avoid self afflicted torture.
do u people honestly think a stupid number post a website where pessimistic paranoid met fans complain is actually going to impair the major leage baseball player’s of the new york met’s ability to compete at a quality level that will eventually escalate them to a winning season and off to the playoffs? just being logical hear guys…and btw im only 14…rollinsisgay is gay urself..hehe
I dont think anyone will argue that the number being posted actually affects the outcome of the game. However, it does serve as a painful reminder of last year, and theres no point for the Mets to have a magic number when its 13 and there are only 14 games left. They could easily drop out of first place in the next couple of days.
would be a shame to lose easley. castillo is a cooler. his mere presence in Queens brings nothing but dread, imminent danger and downright awfulness to any situation. He is a bad luck charm. if we have to see him in the lineup every day for the remainder of the season, we can begin cleaning out the lockers now.
And I do believe in karma and tempting fate and all that stuff. I think the jinx was already set in motion when the number landed on the site, so it’s probably too late. So even though it’s too late, let’s at least let the fates make it easy on us so remove the number please.
For those of you who use firefox like I do, you can click on that “magic number” image and block the image, therefore when I come into the site I don’t see it, so until Matt dumps the stupid image I won’t see it.
That’s fantastic! Thanks!
You, sir, deserve a Nobel prize.
Matt,
Please take that magic number down. Its a joke that we are counting a magic number and we cant beat the damn Braves.
Same crap as last year. TAKE IT DOWN!!!
plz take down the magin number sign and put it up when the magic number is 0.
The number has nothing to do with this heartless gutless team lets be real if the Mets get real lucky and make the playoffs they won’t win one game ,maybe the numbers are good it reminds us how close the season is to ending the nightmare
since castillo has been back, he has not done a thing. does not get on base with walks or bunts. let A. reyes play second.
the bullpen does it again…….. made my freaking day……no amount of runs is enough. the bullpen has been garbage in this home stand. boy, my moon cakes are going to taste miserable…….thanks a lot mets bullpen.
hey Ned Yost, you’re Ned Toast. you let your brew crew team bend over for the philles.
I’m not a superstitionist, but the magic number during a brutal pennant race with a hobbled team—especially the pseudo-bullpen— is an example of hubris and blind entitlement that no Met fan should ever feel. That’s for the team in the Bronx. So “jinxes” aside, it’s just bad taste and a very bad and uncute reminder that history can repeat itself. And this team needs to win the NL East to exorcise the demons of 2007. And the Mets better not take the Gnats for granted—especially with Dukes on a mission from the sociopathic side of the baseball gods.
the mets need to go 6 – 1 on this upcoming road trip. anything less is unacceptable. they need to absolutely destroy the Nationals and the Braves. the bullpen needs to wake the hell up and for the love of god hold a lead please.
They will need to score 70 runs to ensure a 6-1 road trip…
Suppan killing the Mets again. Phillies start the first and the second with two on and no out. They are going to romp tonight.
The worst part of the Mets struggles is that it seems to be the only thing that inspires the Phillies to play hard. Unless the Mets make a statement on this road trip they will inspire the Phillies to overtake them, and have to beat out the Breweres for the WC. At least there is no Colorado this year.
Houston is looking to play the role of Colorado this year.
hope the cubs knock them out.
well they’ll have to look to do that another year…
oh great the Mets are tanking while the Phillies are making their magical run again.
TAKE THE GODDAMN NUMBER DOWN ALREADY
well….the brewers as of right now has officially bend over for the phillies. the phillies have forgotten the ways of losing.
i hate suppan…….. he kills the mets even when he isn’t faicng them.
brew crew should have faced the phillies on monday.
the brewers are the sorriest bunch of players in years…
way to get up for a big series with the wild card on the line.
pathetic…
Well, when you have a manager that cries and complains and puts all his energy into getting a one hitter overturned to a no-hitter instead of focusing on winning games, then there you go.
Guys please. The Brewers are not making the playoffs. We have to FIND a away to get in. Any way possible. Root for the Cubs to beat Houston now too.
The Brewers have half of their games left against the Pirates and the Reds. I doubt they’re like the Mets and will find ways to lose those games.
I don’t know about that. They look pretty bad. They collapsed last year too, only it was lost in the news to our historic collapse.
Well, the Astros play the Reds and the Pirates a total of 6 times also. Someone will take advantage of it.
Man, if Easley didn’t have any bad luck, he would have none at all.
Oldest active player never to see post season. Not that him being healthy right now guarantees that….
We should have SWEPT the Braves this weekend. With a half decent bullpen, we would have. There is only ONE guy who does not make me wince when he comes out of the bullpen and that is Joe Smith. (For a while it was Stokes too but not right now.)
Look, I love Jerry, and I love what he has done with this team, but please tell me WHY
a)with all the call ups we have, how come he’s sticking with all the all old guys in the bullpen. I know that Smith was able to come in and fix up Show’s mess today so it had no effect on the score, but why the he.ll did he have Show pitching to begin with? Where is Rincon, Al reyes etc.? Can we see one of them pitch already?!
b) If your going to pinch hit for Church, you have GOT TO pinch hit for Castillo. I mean that is downright insulting.
fire castillo
Do people calling for A Reyes to play realize how tremendously bad he is offensively?
he has more potential than Castillo. Castillo’s a piece of crap. worthless
So is Reyes. He and Castillo are both worthless. The only advantage Reyes has over Castillo is that he is younger and has better knees. But he is no better of a hitter.
i disagree, a. reyes is a much better hitter and a WAY better defensive 2nd baseman. it’s a no brainer
A. Reyes can actually drive the ball into the outfield and not look at strike 3.
Really? I don’t know what you’re watching, but I haven’t seen A. Reyes show any ability to drive the ball. All he does is ground out.
You dont watch baseball if you think Castillo is a better offensive option than ANYONE other than the recently departed Anderson Hernandez.
Ah, the you don’t watch baseball argument.
Well done.
Im right and youre wrong.
How about that arguement?
…phils up 4-0….they might not lose again.
make that 5…
I despise Suppan.
the Brewers are a piece of dump. I think we’ll be seeing 2 NL East team in the playoffs
Marlins and Phils?
At least the Phillies are helping our wild card chances. :D
The Brewers have a lot of games left against the Pirates and Reds. Awesome!
GET RID OF THAT # CERRONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The damage is done…
This is a sweet pennant race.
Also, Ned Yost truly needs to be fired if the Brewers cant find their way for the second year in a row.
same with Omar!!!!!!!!!!!
Two weeks until the Wilpons give Omar a vote of confidence.
They bought Sabathia over so they can win every 5th day.
the mets should go to hell. They’re going swimming after this loss. They have no heart at all. They are a disgrace if they don’t win tomorrow.
yep, david wright, carlos delgado, jose reyes, carlos beltran, mike pelfrey, johan santana, ryan church, daniel murphy, fernando tatis, nick evans, etc. have all been just AWFUL.
They obviously don’t care at all. Let’s trade them all!
Fairweather fan.
They were cracking jokes and going swimming after the game. I mean how little can you care?
you are the worst kind of fan
Please take down the number. It’s silly at this point considering its one number away from total games left…
Aahhh the beauty of baseball and a pennant race!!!! Every single game is life and death, every single inning, pitch, decision, and move could decide the whole thing. After each win we wonder who can beat us, and then one or two losses makes us think there is no hope. It is pure agony, excruciating agony, and yet we cannot tear ourselves away.
You don’t get anything like it in football, basketball or hockey. It is unique to baseball. And the beauty of baseball is that you just never know. IF the Mets can win this thing, if they can make a run in the post season, it is doing it IN SPITE OF THEIR FLAWS that will make it all the more special. As someone once said:
“There is more Met than there is Yankee in each and every one of us.”
So I am going to enjoy every painful agonizing moment, every second guess, every high and every low. Because I have been a Mets fan for 40 years now, and the majority of those had Septembers with no pain, with no agony, with no hope, as the Mets could only play out the string. And regardless of how it ends, there will be 5 or 6 long winter months before I can watch meaningful baseball again.
Poetic – and oh, so true.
As a Met fan myself these past 40 years, you left out one thing:
‘You have to like pain to by a NY Met fan’. Who else but us die hards can lay claim to fame on being a fan of the team that will forever by linked to the ‘greatest collapse in ML history’?
As a Mets fan since 1990, I can honestly say that I regret that my family was a fan of this team and indoctrinated me into it. It’s not worth it. I wish the Giants wouldn’t have moved away. They led the NL in world titles until they moved to Frisco. At least they had somewhat of a winning tradition here.
You are a disgrace and should never post on this site ever again. Go root for the Nats you loser.
Even the Nats will probably win a World Series before the Mets as long as the Wilpons own this team.
You’re a disgrace to your name. shame on you. you know nothing about being a true fan.
I watch the games. I root for them. It doesn’t make me any less of a fan that I know this team has horrible ownership that does not use all of the resources it has to build a championship team. For example, with Wagner out, this is the perfect opportunity to bring in a proven winning closer like K-Rod. The Mets won’t do it because they have Wagner under contract for $10 million next year that they do not have covered by insurance.
At the beginning of the 2008 season, the Mets had a payroll of $138 million, highest in the NL
They could spend more, but our payroll isn’t exactly small.
And it’s also not a slam dunk that we don’t go after K-Rod…
From Adam Rubin of the Daily News:
Everyone is going to clamor for the Mets to pursue Francisco Rodriguez (pictured) as a free agent this winter. Don’t look for it to happen. Mets officials aren’t going to allot $25 million to closer, insiders tell the Daily News. With Billy Wagner due to make $10.5 million next season, the ‘09 ninth inning likely is going to be pieced together at a moderate cost. The Mets like their internal candidates, whether that means re-signing Luis Ayala, using Brian Stokes or even Bobby Parnell. Discussions about John Maine as closer in 2009 haven’t happened yet. It probably won’t if Oliver Perez bolts as a free agent, but stay tuned.
I see the 2007 as our inherited legacy from the 1951 Dodgers.
Plus the “Great” comebacks of 1969 and 1973, are in reality just “collapses” by other teams viewed from the other end of the telescope.
It’s the pain, the suffering, the waiting, that makes the winning feel so good when it finally happens. The fair weather fans will never know that feeling.
Met fans are a special breed. We certainly have a glutton for punishment.
I have been in such a bad mood since the game ended (I was there which makes it that much worse) but your post calmed me a bit. With that said if they lose tonight I probably stop watching
You just know Manny Acta is salivating at the opportunity to knock the Mets out of the postseason again.
i love the magic number.
don’t be so stupidstitious.
NO — it has to come down. Otherwise, the Mets will not be able to win the 1208 World Series.
the mets have to win by 2012 b/c that’s the end of the mayan calendar and hence the end of the world
:)
The damn magic number in Sunday’s game was 11: Number of pitches it took for the bullpen to cough up a sure victory!
Want another magic number?
How about 1: The number of games the red-hot Phillies are, behind us now.
And then there’s 2: The number of consecutive seasons we Mets fans have to put up with having the worst bullpen in MLB.
Lastly, how about 0: the level of tolerance I have for premature postings of magic numbers to clinch a division title, as if we learned nothing from last year!
Take the damn number down NOW!
how about 0 as in the amount of games the mets will play in october.
How about 14 as in the amount of games still left this season?
I have Firefox and used the advice given earlier in this thread of blocking the image. It worked just fine, now I do not have to look at it.
but…it’s still there!
Great. Maybe we can Firefox the Mets bullpen.
I just did the same thing. I wonder where Cerrone and all his cronies are tonight, after maybe the worst loss of the year? Eating at Papa Johns, or on the phone switching their insurance to Geico? Very convenient for them to go missing tonight. Guaranteed the magic number is still up tomorrow, and their will be a whole bunch of bullsh!t about how this team is resilient. At this point, I’d almost rather them miss the playoffs again, maybe that will show Omar he needs to get rid of the “Willie Randolph, I trust my guys” mentality. Even if they do sneak in as the wild card, the Cubbies in Wrigley are going to beat the living daylights out of them.
Here we go again. . . .
No, not with a “Collapse” (three game lead isn’t much of a “collapse”). No, it’s chicken little Met fans venting, swearing they’ll never watch another game, then other, insecure Met fans made uncomfortable reading doom and gloom venting right back at them, calling them fairweather fans, then various people writing Chicken Soup crap about how gosh-gee-golly exciting baseball is when the Mets blow leads, then the angry “Fire Omar!” fans calling the angry “Gotta Believe” fans “polyannas”, and everybody wanting someone fired.
Ick. I’m sick of going around in circles. Of course, I don’t pretend to be above it all. The common thread is frustration, and I’m as frustrated as anyone.
Just win, guys, and make everyone’s lives easier.
Winning does cure all, you’re right. But with the bullpen’s state as it is, they can’t win. It’s a no win situation for Jerry right now. With a chance at the postseason, he can’t leave the starters in for more than 100-120 pitches, for fear of wearing them out before the playoffs. On the other hand, there is not one person in the ‘pen that can be trusted right now.
‘Just win, guys, and make everyone’s lives easier’.
I’m pretty sure that’s the exact same sentiment from every ‘pollyanna’ to every ‘fire everyone’ poster on this site….
the magic number on this site isn’t going to kill the mets. they’ll take care of that themselves.
Bad series. You couldn’t expect Phil. to sweep, but they did and now it’s a little more stressful.
Non game vents:
1 – why don’t we get a pre-game when the game is on CW11? Same guys, I think it sux. SNY should always have coverage before and after.
2 – metsblog USED to be where I went first before and after games. Site is lacking in the update department. Had to go to ESPN to see the starting lineup today.
Agreed. This site has become WAY too commercialized, but, if you want Mets news and rumors, this is pretty much the only place to go. ESPN doesn’t pick up a story until Buster Olney reports it. SI doesn’t do anything until Heyman says it. Mets.com doesn’t report it until it’s official.
Anyone keeping track on Carlos Zambrano’s game?
I love those who complain that they are not getting their money’s worth on a free site !!!!
yeah this site is a freakin rip-off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They should be paying me to come here! lol
It’s not about getting your money’s worth – its about having a place to go to consult with other fans of that team.
When a game is on SNY, I always tune in for the pregame to learn something I may not be aware of. When I’m in my car, I always tune into the FAN for that same reason. Kevin and Ed always give some info that you may not hear in a game. Metsblog became a part of my daily ritual because it was informative. There is a big following of this site with a plethora of bloggers – there’s no reason to not have post-game recaps for 3 games straight.
ESPECIALLY with the money Matt is hauling in with this obtrusive ads he seems to add to the site every week.
By the way, we may not be paying anything to view it, but coming to the site itself lends to Matt being able to make money off of advertisements and the SNY partnership. Any moron can make a blog. The readers are the ones who decide which blog get the hits, and in turn reap the rewards. Keep that in mind.
Great post niteplanner.
Agreed. MetsBlog is no longer some site run by a fan in his basement. It’s got real companies as official sponsors, a partnership with the Mets network, thousands of readers, and at least 6 or 7 posters. There’s no reason in September with the team struggling to cling to first place that there shouldn’t be some post-game thoughts posted on the site.
I don’t give a rats balls if matt posts it or not, but the magic number has gone up exactly one in the last six mets and phillies games played. That makes me worried and annoyed
prediction: The mets and phillies both make the playoffs and meet in the NLCS. mets lose in game 7 on a greg dobbs homer after wasting a bases loaded nobody out chance in the 7th.
you honestly believe that the mets could make it to a game 7 with this bullpen. i’m not being negative, just realistic. serioiusly, this pen in the playoffs against that hard fighting team, we wouldn’t win a game
That “hard fighting” team has lost 11 of 18 to us this year, and 4 of the 5 series they played
I do agree that it is unlikely we make it that far, because of the atrociusness of our bullpen
the past is the past and this is september. just like last year, down the stretch, the sillies don’t quit. they are doing the exact same thing this year that they did last year. and from what i saw this weekend, the mets are doing the same as they did last year also. not a good formula.
TAKE DOWN THE MAGIC NUMBER
Get in the playoffs and who knows. We all just have to root game by game and get in any way possible. Get in and you can win no matter what.
If our pen had converted half of the games they’ve blown, we’d have been celebrating a division championship yesterday. That hurts.
Who would have thought Matt Wise wouldn’t fix the bullpen? Omar is just unlucky.
I’m curious as to why the bullpen wasn’t addressed AT ALL last offseason. We got to the nlcs in 06 because of our stellar bullpen. Isn’t that a clue as to why we needed to rebuild after the atrocious year we got from them in 07, and now 08?
Yeah take down the magic number because that’ll make everything allright. I’ve never seen so much useless talk than this thread. Who gives a, about a stupid magic number? You think that’s what I’m focusing on with this team? Please get over it
THIS SITE IS OWNED BY OMAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fact that nearly every fan here wants that damn number taken down, and that Matt hasn’t done so, AND that it’s pointless since the number is 13 with 14 left to play, AND that for some odd reason Matt felt the need to include the Phillie Phanatic in the background, kinda makes me wonder whether Matt is really a Met fan.
Okay, not really, but he does seem to lack any sympathy whatsoever for fellow fans, who find the number representative of the pain and disappointment of last season.
Agreed and well said. Posting the magic number with such a long way to go before clinching adds the potential for a larger dissapointment among lots of the readers on this website.
Counting chickens before theyre hatched…
Last year…i bought my playoff tickets, they didnt make it and they took 3 months to give me the money back. This year? I pay the tickets and they lose 2 out of 3. I guess if they dont make the playofss I wont get my money back till Dec. Nice…..
And hey Jerry…why dont you use Rincon, Reyes and maybe even parnell? Just a thought. I mean…I guess we could pitch ayala and stokes EVERY day and hope their arms dont come off. Oh yeah…why is sho and felicano in their against a lefty in a big spot instead of Rincon? oh wait…those 2 have a track record of success in those spots. Not.
This team never learns from past mistakes. Being a Met Fan really blows sometimes.
Take down the Magic Number, bring back the Curly Shuffle, wear your rally caps backwards, reverse the curse, don’t step on the lines as you leave the field… hard to believe that only 5 teams in MLB have a better record than the Mets (and only the Cubs in the NL). How many would have signed for a 1 game lead in the Division AND the Wild Card on Sept. 15th way back in mid June ?? That said, if we had a lock down 8th and 9th tandem, we’d be the best team in baseball right now. Since we don’t, it’s either heartbreak or heart attack on a nightly basis.
You’re equating the NL and AL as if the talent were equal. Even if the Mets had a decent setup man and closer I doubt if they could beat teams such as the Angels and Red Sox.
Take the Magic # down. Just nuts to put it up so early and with such a slim lead – and with this team’s sorry history of closing out a season and a lack of a proven closer. We are the Mets after all. What can go wrong almost always does.
Mets = gutless, chokers
Phillies = tough-minded, a team with heart
Phillies overtake the Mets this week and don’t look back. Better bullpen, better starters – and how soon before the Phillies have magic # for the Mets to be eliminated?
Matt,
At the risk of piling on, I just have to add that while I think this site is great, terrific and any other praise-worthy adjective you can think of, putting up the magic number was way too premature and reflected an experience and naivete on your part. Magic numbers should only be used at a time when you can confidently say that the team will PROBABLY win, not when the difference is only two to three games with more than 15 or so to play. When the Mets were up by 7 with 17 to play it was appropriate, but this time it wasn’t and really does reflect a hubris we didn’t need to display especially after what happened last year. And, of course, no sooner does the number go up on your site and others, then the Mets blow two out of the last three games. With a one-game difference between the Mets and Phillies (two in the loss) at this point, that number has to come down.
This up coming series with Washington will either show that last september is in the past or that this team is in for deja vou all over again. The 07 Mets drop 2/3 to the nats in this spot. Lets hope the 08 Mets can sweep the worst team in the league.
Do us all a favor and get that stupid “MAGIC NUMBER” off the site. It may or may not be a jinx, but after this weekend why would you take that chance. thnx
What did I tell you all last night? I knew he would keep the number up. All he did was move it down the column 2 spots. And instead of writing an actual post-game post, he puts up the Gary and Keith video from SNY. Great insight Matt!
