Note: Chipper to Buy Seats from Shea Stadium
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 14, 2008 9:41 am

Chipper Jones purchased an $869 pair of orange seats from Shea Stadium, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jones, as quoted in the report, said:

“I’m sure a bunch of people who sat in those seats have called me a bunch of names over the years, but that’s all right – they’ll soon reside in my basement.”

there are players i hate, and then there are players like chipper, who i hate, but respect, if for no other reason than he gets it…he understands that baseball should be fun, it’s entertainment, he understands the idea of rivalry…and, while it frustrates the hell out of me, i appreciate it, all while hoping he fails miserable

When push comes to shove, Jones was a player who talked with his bat and did so at an incredibly high level year in and year out.

You have to respect a player like Chipper because its seems that he respects the game and the fans and I think deep down he wished he played for the Mets

    • sddbaker says:

Don’t you think if Chipper had wanted to play anywhere but Atlanta he would have? He’s said many times that New York is not his kind of place.

  3. choochoo808 says:

Chipper should get the Reggie Miller treatment at his last game in NYC. Every epic needs its villain, and he played the part with equal parts moxie and aplomb.

That being said, I will be the first in line to volunteer for the “Raid on Entebbe-esque” rescue mission into his basement. Chipper having those seats just oozes just with bad mojo, and they’d look much better in this Mets fans den. ;)

  4. bkfitz says:

Couldn’t he have bought the red seats?

  5. Eggman says:

The only thing Chipper has ever done to the Mets is destroy them with his bat. I for one have no animosity towards the man. Save your hate for those who deserve it, like Clemens.

  6. No_Brain_Willie says:

I agree, I don’t hate Chipper. I have the utmost respect for him. I especially can’t hate him when the Braves suck too, its kind of pointless.

The thing that I actually love about Chipper is that he is a true winner and did it with less support. Sure he didn’t get a ring, but guys like Jeter and A-Rod (who has won nothing) has $250M worth of support behind them. The Braves won 14 straight division titles with Chipper quietly slugging and playing injured every year. His career is HOF worthy and his numbers will be truly spectacular when he quits. I also congratulate him for acknowledging the Mets/Braves rivalry. This mets/phills “rivalry” is all fan generated, mostly from Philly fans because they just hate New York in everything. Mets/Braves were truly a rivalry.

Well said, Matt. I agree totally. That being said, Chipper has consistently been the one ball player I love to hate……

  8. zen says:

he’s a larry who everyone calls “chipper”

    and

his daughter is a shea who everyone will call “citi”

  9. khmustache says:

agreed on all points…i especially like the reggie miller treatment for his last game. i do hope he plays tonight, like it or not, the guy will go down as one of the epic met killers all while doing it the right way. i hate his stupid smile, his horrible teeth, his stupid accent, his unbelievable clutchness on offense and defense and his god awful “name” but the guy is a gamer…

  10. nydre78 says:

How did he get orange seats but blue and orange were sold out by the time I had an opportunity to buy them? Argh.

  11. MyaGirl says:

You stole the words right out of my mouth Matt. I went to last night’s doubleheader just so I could sit close enough to yell Larry… but he didn’t play.

I hate his guts, but I respect him. He can play on my team anytime. 1999 NL MVP, and a sure fire first ballot HOF. A guy who just simply “owns” us.

  12. metsomniac says:

i hope that he retires on his own terms and does a sort of retirement tour… I’ll give him a standing ovation in a heartbeat when he comes to the plate. we booed him over the years, but in the end you have to respect him, and even more so for taking the rivalry seriously.

  13. Like most Mets fans, I hate Chipper and I hate Jimmy Rollins.

The difference is, you have to respect Chipper for being a great player and understanding the nature of the rivalry, which, while intense, was always well-natured and all about baseball.

On the other hand, you have Rollins, who I have no respect for, because he’s a bit**. I do love the Mets-Phillies rivalry, but it’s not all about baseball – there’s something else there… real animosity, and Rollins resides right at the center of the hatred.

  14. breadclock says:

Wonder if Chipper bought a bunch of Citifield bricks, too? Anyway like most of us, I’ve hated him (for being so good and clutch against the Mets), but always respected him on the field. He’s a 1st ballot HOFer in my book; one of the rare first overall picks that’s panned out as hyped. His getting old certainly makes me feel old. Just looking at his puffy, haggard mug on his ESPN page is a bit sad. Guy can still rake, though, for an aging cripple on a mediocre team.

    • sddbaker says:

The mediocre team has beat the Mets 9 out of 15 this year, and will no doubt add to that in Atlanta next week.

  15. shea73 says:

He is one of the true greats of his era – and no stink of growth hormones or steroids so I respect him as a player. Hated what he did to us – time after time.

I think he harbored a desire to be in a Mets uniform for a long time. Like a closet drag queen, I can picture Jones at home in his private master closet, admiring himself in the mirror wearing his secret Mets uni.

  16. andy92072 says:

No surprise-heck, anyone who names his kid after the ballpark would HAVE to buy some seats, just because Shea Jones probably said “Hey Daddy, are you going to buy some seats from the park with my name?”

As always, “Larry” keeps it real. Likewise, when #10’s time does come to an end in MLB, if I’m there for his last appearance I will cheer too. Unlike a certain redneck reliever, any animosity towards Jones only stems from him killing us at the plate-and the “put the Yankee stuff on” comment. WHen the Braves came to town for the first post 9/11 game, Chipper led the way in praising NYC and the Mets fans.

BTW, my last Shea game was August 21 (Pelfrey’s CG)-and the highlight of the night? Chipper’s throwing error!! You could hear the “LAAAAAAAAARRRRY” chants all the way to the 7 train. I wouldn’t have been surprised if he tipped his cap ala Darryl to the Red Sox fans in ‘86.
