News: Brewers fire Yost
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 15, 2008 3:16 pm

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Brewers have fired their manager Ned Yost.

The Brewers are 3–10 in September.

They are currently tied with the Phillies for first place in the Wild Card, though they have squandered a five-game lead.

…i am not sure i ever recall a team firing their manager, when essentially tied for a playoff spot

  1. Nightlife says:

They probably should have done this a long time ago.

  2. therealsince86 says:

    WOW.

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

I second that! WOW! Are they taking a page out of the Miami Heat and New Jersey Devils championship season playbook?

      • toomanyuniforms says:

I honestly think this doesn’t happen were it not for the Mets’ 2007 example. They’re trying to avoid a Collapse, where a manager who has completely lost the team tries to steer them through the storm.

        • DjDeF says:

I am sorry but a team in a pennant race should not have to play for the manager. They should be playing for themselves and their teammates to make the damn playoffs. Who cares about the manager

        • patrick says:

Just so you recall, the Brewers collapsed last year under Yost already, the size, nature and timing were just more convenient.

The timing always makes it “dramatic” in so much as news, but when you blow large leads more than once it is just a bad sign.

That they replaced him with Dale Svuem though is just comical.

  3. rogasm says:

    Odd time to do that.

  4. HangingSlider says:

On the Uni watch front, i vote that the old school brewers logo is cooler than any other in the league. As a met fan im jealous

  5. NyXmets4life says:

woow do we know whos gonna replace him?

  6. toomanyuniforms says:

Not as bold a move as you think. If the team turns it around, you look like a genius. If they tank, well, they were already tanking! Hmm. . . sounds familiar. . . .

    • Dirtysanchez says:

yea yost lost that team a long time ago..maybe they need a breath of fresh air..like a interm manager…..that sounds so familiar but i cant just put my thumb on it……………

  7. HeadlinerG60 says:

    EC-Dub! EC-Dub! EC-Dub!

  8. Dirtysanchez says:

WOW someone didnt take well to their collapse….and they talk about ny being impatient…

  9. BigPelf4prez says:

Willie to manage the Brewers. LOL. Imagine that. Knock the mets out

  10. HeadlinerG60 says:

LOL @ Willie managing at the Major League level.

  11. danlx13 says:

    WOOOWWW

  12. losmets5 says:

I am almost as surprised as when the Mets fired Willie. As for him managing the Brewers, I am all for it. Automatic playoff spot. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. HeadlinerG60 says:

Things that shock me today (includes reactions from events yesterday):

    1. Zambrano threw a no-hitter
    2. Ted Lilly is throwing a no-hitter right now
    3. The Brewers couldn’t win a single game in Philly
    4. Larry
    5. Amy Nelson bitching about the Cubs and Astros in Milwaukee
    6. The Nooner
    7. The volcano taco from TB is as hot as my toothpaste
    8. The Jets lost
    9. LOL
    10. Ned Yost got fired

  14. SantanaCYYOung says:

and the mets brought back willie to start the season…

  15. X-Man says:

One thing that’s always overlooked, The Mets collapse overshadowed the Brewer’s collapse last season. The Brewers had an 8.5 game lead at one point last season and lost it. So this is more to do with the collapse they had last year very similar to what happened to Willie.

    • that was early in the season not in september

      • patrick says:

the timing is dramatic news, the size of the lead is still enormous and you have to play terrible baseball to achieve the final outcome.

They Cubs were not exactly world beaters and the Brewers just floundered from August on.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

          Because the timing matters.

        • patrick says:

either way you had to lose the same amount of games to achieve the outcome, the only thing that positions it as timing matters is the odds, teams do not routinely blow 6+ game leads no matter the time of year they had established that lead, exceptions being to injury, if the Mets had a 7 game lead with 27, 37 or 47 to play and still lost the division by 1 game it would have been no different, focusing on the drama sells papers and allows papers to sell more papers by having dramatic under tones of collapse, the result is the same no matter what, failure to achieve goal.

  16. Actually as of right now it only shows that the Brewers are in Panic mode. If they make it to the playoffs, it’s a good move. If they don’t then we’re gonna have a problem here….

  17. 4eyeJoe says:

    a year too late brewers…. a year too late…..
yost should have been toast last year after the brewers collapse.
hey prince fielder, how about eating some meat…..

  18. FrankyJay says:

I dont see the brewers plays a lot….i only saw when the Mets play them and i saw a few mistakes by the manager been made and yesterday i was following the Mil-Phi game in the web and i saw that with the game tied at 3, runners in 2nd and 3rd he walk Howard to load the bases looking for the double play and pitch to the DP master Pat Burrell, but he KEEPS the Lefthanded pitcher, Burrell connect a single and THEN he change the pitcher…i dont know was Yost thinking.

  19. ugbmets21 says:

all i know is that we want them to keep getting Ls. this gives the mets at least wild card spot. i know people will say “screw that”, but its time to watch not just the division but the wild card. forget about willie, if the mets dont make the playoffs bc of bullpen it is bc omar diddnt get anyone to improve the arms.

    • FrankyJay says:

sorry to disagree the bullpen has been this bad, since july, true, but everybody….specially me, expect them to get it back like the last few years, but in august they keep in bad shape…at that point is nothing much what it can be done.
I’m sure Omar was hoping for them to get right on track and even if we win the WS, the bullpen is gonna have a lot of changes.

  20. MetsFan1976 says:

He probably should have been fired after last season’s collapse, but to do this now? This late in the season–regardless of how much the Brewers have sucked recently–is flat out shocking!

  21. BigPelf4prez says:

The way the Brewers, who fired manager Ned Yost today, are playing, the Mets probably have a safety net in the wild card. Regardless, here’s the Monday lineup as the Mets open a four-game series in D.C. with the lead one game over the idle Phillies (two in the loss column):

    Reyes, ss
    Church, rf
    Wright, 3b
    Beltran, cf
    Delgado, 1b
    Tatis, lf
    Castillo, 2b
    Schneider, c
    Martinez, rhp

Here’s further circumstantional confirmation that Brandon Knight is Wednesday’s starter against the Nationals: He intends to throw a bullpen session today, which he typically does two days before starts.

First base coach Ken Oberkfell’s Houston home lost part of its roof, resulting in a collapsed ceiling and water damage. Oberkfell reports that his wife and children are doing fine despite the lack of power.

Luis Ayala may have lost his stranglehold on the closer’s role. His groin is a bigger issue than it’s been made out to be lately, and Mets officials knew even before he entered Sunday’s game that he didn’t have his good stuff. Ayala was up in the zone and hit hard by the Braves while suffering his second blown save in nine chances. A sign the Mets knew Ayala was in trouble: Brian Stokes and Pedro Feliciano were up quickly.

Triple-A Buffalo is expected to announce its new affiliation at a press conference next Monday. While nothing is official, I’d wager that’s where the Mets are relocating from New Orleans. Syracuse seems like a pretty dysfunctional situation from this distance. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

  22. FrankyJay says:

I dont want to hear Ryan Braun for MVP he has dissapear in the last few weeks and if you see Pujols line also, he still batting 4-2, 5-3 but no runs, no RBI…a lot of Left on Base, and his homers has been when the team is already up by good or loosing 7-2 and 6-1…so his homers are made when the game is mostly decided.

  23. zen says:

cubs have another no-hitter going thru 8 againt the ’stros.

    are they even trying?

  24. dominicanboy08 says:

guys, I was thinking about possible postseaon series. if the phillies win the wild card, they would face the cubs and the mets would face the dogders. would you root for the phillies?, so we can avoid (sebathia and sheets) these two are scary even if the rest of brewers suck. I know we have a long way to go, but I was just thinking.

    • desimet4life says:

if phillies are playing the cubs and we’re playing the dodgers, that means CC & Sheets are on the golf course. If you meant Zambrano and Harden, then its something to think about…

    • FrankyJay says:

i like that better, but the Mets NEED to win the division, i prefer to play the dodgers, that agains the cubs in a short series.
if that plays out that way…i think Cubs-Mets, but it doesn’t surprise me if the Phillies defeat the Cubs, i think the cubs pitching is overrated.

  25. Fregosi says:

Ballzy move by the Brewers front office. I wonder if Obama is paying attention!

  26. rollinsisgay says:

    Freakin Finally!

  27. rollinsisgay says:

I like how you tried to hide the magic #. Very sneaky!!!! Now remove that crap!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. BigPelf4prez says:

    Game 1 Lineup

    Castillo, 2b

    • rollinsisgay says:

      screw Castillo!!!!

    • dominicanboy08 says:

I really want to see murphy at second. if we get to the playoffs, we will need our best lineup to score and many runs for our crappy bullpen.

      reyes
      murphy
      wright
      delgado
      beltran
      church
      tatis
      schneider

  29. rollinsisgay says:

NED YOST IS NED TOAST!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH

  30. BlueCapsOnly says:

Just listened to Matt on that Radio show, but boy the host of that show is horrible…

  31. enoughisenough says:

I want to preface this by saying i fully believe the Mets will ultimately win the division. However, I was just thinking that if for some reason the Mets blow it again this year…it is going to get REAL ugly, REAL fast. I;m not sure this fan base can take another giant letdown like that..

    • BigPelf4prez says:

they have a great shot to get in. I can’t listen to people who say I want to win the division. We have to get in anyway possible

      • efaulk03 says:

“and the champaign will taste that much sweeter”… oh wait.. we used sayin that last season during a post game interview in the middle of the collapse…

  32. Mingo says:

The good thing about the Phils and Brewers series is that it also puts the Mets up in the Wild Card race should (God Forbid) they fall back.
The truth is, I would also rather see the Mets play the Dodgers than the Brewers in the first round. That would mean we wouldn’t have to face CC or Sheets.

  33. brucemagic2007 says:

That’s what you get when you waste time petitioning the league to get a no hitter instead of focusing on a pennant race

    • Harsh…though CC should have gotten that no-hitter.

      • Mingo says:

No way. That play was not an automatic out. It takes a perfect play, a perfect spin and a perfect throw. I applaud the scorekeeper for making the right call. A scorekeeper should make the same call whether there is a no-hitter or a blowout.

  34. metsforlife says:

On the lineup, why won’t Jerry put Castillo in the 8th spot?? I know 2 left handed batters in a row. OMG what a horrible thing!! Give me a break! Schneider should be 7th he is hitting the ball a lot better than Castillo, and Castillo fits the 8th hole much better!!

    • rollinsisgay says:

Castillo fits much better in the bunch of of people who are unemployed

    • ravi3 says:

Thats not necessarily true. Though Castillo’s batting average is down, he is still getting on base at a .350 clip. Having him in the 7th spot allows Schneider to drive him in.

Of course, the flip side to this is that with Schneider in the 7th, he can be insurance in case Tatis fails to drive in any of the mid-order guy. With Castillo hitting 8, you’ve got a better chance at clearing the pitchers spot.

      • rollinsisgay says:

I can drive the ball better than Castillo. He shouldn’t even be in the MLB the way he’s been playing!

  35. CaseStreet says:

I’ve figured out what team is the perfect fit for Castillo and Heilman.

  36. EliPorter says:

glad melvin has the guts to pull the trigger on a move that omar couldnt last year

  37. rollinsisgay says:

    Omar has a freakin Vag!

    • kingman 26 says:

Do you even have an idea how childish and idiotic your posts are?

You claim to be 15, but I am guessing you are an immature 12.

And your idiotic name, your comment last night, and now this—-is someone a little sexually frustrated and confused?

      • rollinsisgay says:

screw you kingman, get off my back!

        • kingman 26 says:

Then shut your obnxious, childish, idiotic mouth with the ridiculous posts.

NO ONE comes here to read a child write about Omar’s Vag.

          A life my friend—GET ONE!!

        • Thank You kingman…

        • kingman 26 says:

I know it is a losing battle, but I am trying….the Mets’ overall situtaion, the magic number/jinx controversy, etc, and we need an unsupervised 12 year old homophobe posting about Omar’s vag?

          What is next??

Good name/prognostication by the way. I like it.

        • risingcurveball says:

honestly Kingman I don’t see what your problem is ive noticed you attack this kid before, and personally I think you have no business doing so. What has he done to you? And yes, Omar has a Vag and is the worst GM to ever walk the planet!

        • Mingo says:

I gotta jump in here. If Omar was so bad how come we have been in contention for the past three years. I gotta think Phillips was worst than Omar. Plus, in the annals of Mets history, only one GM the Mets have had has been as good and that was Frank Cashen.

        • risingcurveball says:

umm try highest payroll in the National league………. if we don’t make the playoffs with the highest payroll there is something clearly wrong.

  38. dykstraw says:

matt just reversed jinxed the brewers into the wild card

  39. SantanaCYYOung says:

Lack of posts on such an important day in the season?

Today is a MUST win, just to shut up all the reports of Collapse 2.0, at least for one day.

Pedro needs to have a good outing.

The Mets need to come back after a brutal loss just like they have each time this year.

BTW, can we get a nice easy blowout today?

    • kingman 26 says:

I think some of us are shell-shocked and out of emotion after this weekend. But if 2008 under Jerry goes to form, we get creamed today, the sky TRULY falls for the next 24 hours, then we win and the Philz lose tomorrow. Really, that would be appropriate.

      • SantanaCYYOung says:

I just want to be up on Sept. 29, whether it be in the nl east or wildcard, don’t care…just get in.

    • ask that question to the red hot David Wright ;)

  40. zen says:

when the mets win tonight will we see a darling jersey for the magic # or ken boswell?

    shawn dunston circa 1999?

  41. SantanaCYYOung says:

Is there any way that Omar tells Manny Acta: throw away these 4 games and you’ll be our manager next year?

  42. theCoop says:

Yeah last person I’d want is Willie II aka Manny Acta.

  43. teufelshuffle86 says:

Suddenly the Willie canning doesn’t look so bad.

  44. VictorZambrananberg says:

Thanks BigPelf, I can’t believe that there isn’t any pregame notes and/or lineups posted. I fear that Matt is too busy for little old us now
