postGame: Nationals 7 Mets 2

by Regis Courtemanche

The Nationals (57-93) are determined to play the role of spoiler down the stretch as they defeated the Mets (83-66) by the score of 7 to 2 tonight in Washington.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from last night’s loss, go to SNY.tv.

Well this is why it’s called a pennant race as it has become evident for some time now that every game is of the utmost importance. The Mets’ lead in the NL East has diminished to half a game.

Long Island native John Lannan held the Mets at bay, allowing just a double to Brian Schneider in the third.  Lannan went seven, and gave up one run.

Pedro Martinez had nice movement on his fastball, and gave them a good outing…until the sixth.  Former Met Anderson Hernandez had a two-out, two run single to give the Nats a three run lead. I would love to see Pedro be able to stay in the game longer by being more effective, but he has only gone 7 innings twice in 18 appearances.

Ricardo Rincon got two quick outs in the seventh only to be relieved by Duaner Sanchez who allowed a walk, single, then three-run blast to Elijah Dukes. I’m no big league manager, but why is it that skippers always bring in righties to face righties and vice versa in spots like this.  I know the stats dictate to do so, but nothing frustrates me more than when they do it and the previous reliever is cruising.  Play the hot hand, offensively and defensively.

The Mets had a chance with the bases loaded in the eighth, but David Wright hit into an inning ending double play.

In other news, Bobby Parnell had a nice major league debut, Lee Mazzilli’s Shave Zone commercial seems to have replaced Guiseppe Franco, and Teddy Roosevelt lost the President’s Race…again.

Mike Pelfrey (13-9) matches up against Odalis Perez (6-10) tomorrow in the nation’s capital.

I Officially Present to you your 2008 Mets Choke Job!! It has now Begun and has no end in sight. As one great sports fan once said, OH THE PAIN!!

randytate September 15, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Wow, we saw a very different game, and I was at the park. Pedro was clawing the whole game. In first inning, he couldn’t deliver a pitch faster than 84MPH. Later, he was able to get some to 87-89 (and even hit 90 on 3 pitches) but in general didn’t have an “out” pitch to put them away. He is, sadly, a shadow of his former self.

This was a depressing game. Wright looked atrocious. There was no life on this team, and worst part, was Castillo dicking around during between inning warm-ups at 2B. It was like he doesn’t care. Very disheartening.

I’m going back Thursday and hopefully they will bring a better effort.

kowalski69 September 15, 2008 at 10:49 pm

new season starts tomorrow. it lasts 2 weeks. there’s 2 teams playing in it. we have a handicap because they start with one more L than we do.

just win games. forget everything else

Ryn05 September 15, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Get ‘em tomorrow.

LETS GO METS

ToastyJoe September 15, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Willie, is that you?

Hit The Weights Zeile September 15, 2008 at 9:56 pm

The magic number = the amount of games left in the season

Gary Busey September 15, 2008 at 9:58 pm

All we have to do is go 13-0!

Stems September 15, 2008 at 9:56 pm

This could have been posted right after Duaner gave up the homer.

You probably had it all set to publish right??

Manuel needs to close the door and rip on these pansies.. for last year and this current sorry a s s performance.

Pathetic.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Will we post the Phillies magic number when they take a half game lead tomorrow Night?

Hit The Weights Zeile September 15, 2008 at 11:31 pm

no I believe after tomorrow the magic number will be replaced with the philly phanatic defecating on mr met.

DerangedHermit September 15, 2008 at 11:35 pm

2 Mascots, 1 Cup.

el_giacomo September 16, 2008 at 6:07 am

Oh for the love of god, NO!!! Now I have that image in my head…Mr. Met…the Phanatic…. ::hurl::

lol

XbLaDe31 September 15, 2008 at 9:57 pm

I really think that Jerry needs to go back to doing what he was doing earlier when he took over and start playing Murphy and Evans, these guys chipped in to get the team where it is. Also needs to stop running out the same guys from the pen that just are not pitching they are scared to throw strikes and inside. I dont think Pedro or any body from the pen throw inside once tonight!!

teufelshuffle86 September 15, 2008 at 9:58 pm

So much for the ‘Mets always rebound after bad losses’ theory. The post game should have started out ‘the Mets took a giant dump tonight and lost to a team that is 30 games under .500′.

This team better stop the bleeding fast!!

BigPelf4prez September 15, 2008 at 9:58 pm

YOUR 2008 METS 3B= CHOKER
YOUR 2008 YANKEES 3B= CHOKER

YOUR 2008 METS= HOME IN OCTOBER
YOUR 2008 YANKEES= HOME IN OCTOBER

dwright5_godsend September 15, 2008 at 10:06 pm

You’re an absolute moron if you really think David Wright is a choker. Truly pathetic. Let’s not overlook the fact that Pedro was uneffective yet again, and Duaner “I only throw strikes to big hitters and after home runs” Sanchez gave up the decisive blow. Even if Wright homers with em loaded, the Mets still trail. You wanna blame it on the one guy who has helped raise this team’s expectations to what they are? Fine, but don’t you DARE call yourself a true Mets fan.

RodKanehl September 15, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Wow! You must be God.

dwright5_godsend September 15, 2008 at 10:16 pm

I’m not god…I’m just not a raving moron who abandons his team as soon as they drop 2 in a row. And its one thing to blame the bullpen. It’s another to blame the teams best player all season long. Watch, the Mets will win 4-5 and BigPelf4Prez(and every one else talking smack) will be on here like “LETS GO METS!!!!!” and “WOOOHOOO!’ I’m sorry, but thats not a true fan.

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:18 pm

I can’t blame fans for being pissed off. This team has stabbed its fans in the back two years in a row. They are lucky they have anyone show up to games. They have been throwing millions are garbage players and expect the fans to do nothing. If the Mets don’t make the playoffs (which is a very big possibility) the team should let the fans destroy the stadium, I am betting the fans at the last game of the season would be willing to help if the team doesn’t make the playoffs.

dwright5_godsend September 15, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Hahaha, I love how quick the dog is turning on its owner. Amazing. Oh well. I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t think the season is over yet. Yeah these last two days have sucked big time, and yeah I’ve lost sleep at night because of this team at times, but at the end of the day I still cheer for my team. Disappointed? You bet. Outraged even? Sure. Ready to call it quits? Not in a million years.

cjr126 September 16, 2008 at 12:24 am

i’m not calling it quits, however, i have zero confidence in our bullpen and lets face it we’re not looking too good at our 4th & 5th starter spots.

kd bart September 15, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Don’t you understand. According to the majority of commenters here, it is all the fault of Luis Castillo.

Wrighton92 September 15, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Dude, I thought I told you to shut your mouth.

Wrighton92 September 15, 2008 at 10:17 pm

hahaha

Furioso September 15, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Wright is a choker. But to be fair, he’s hardly alone.

Pretty stats, useless when the chips are on the table

hjhjhjhjhj September 16, 2008 at 10:26 am

i guess you have to hit a home run every night to be a “non choker” in your book….please go get a hobby, because obviously you have no clue about his sport

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:19 pm

uneffective?

dwright5_godsend September 15, 2008 at 10:27 pm

ok, maybe an understatement. Sh!tty. hows that?

4JoeOrsulak September 16, 2008 at 12:32 am

Wright during the second week of Sept. OPSed 2.011.

He got a lot of clutch hits during that week.
Let’s see how he does the rest of this week before we all turn on him again.

If he does choke the rest of the way, lets hope he gets it out of his system in 2009.

ARod, people forget, was probably the most effective clutch player in 2007. He batted something like .500 in the 9th. Close to .400 late and close, got a ton of game winning hits and game winning HRs.

A choke artist one season is a money player the next.

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 7:42 am

Relax, he also said the 2008 Mets will be home in October when they are leading the division. It’s one thing to make predictions, which this isn’t, it’s another to make statements based on the facts that are wrong, which this is. As of now the Mets are in. Predict all you want in the form of a guess, which it would be. No one knows the future and those that pretend to are worse than those that call last night’s goat a loser and last night’s hero a legend. In this case, it’s the same person.

mookstra September 16, 2008 at 8:01 am

Who cares about the yankees. Be concerned with the phillies and the breweres to a lesser extent. Actually worry only about the game at hand. The Yankees have ZERO bearing on whether the Mets are able to take care of their own business and bring this thing home, and they have ZERO effect on the phillies as well.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Meanwhile the Phillies now know the division is theirs.

Endys Grab September 15, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Not true, the Mets have nothing to worry about. We suck, and it’s only a matter of time before we drop back and spend October carving pumpkins… because our Phillies suck, and so do you.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 15, 2008 at 11:34 pm

if you are a phillies fan and not completely filled with confidence right now you must have not watched any games last year after august 31st.

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 7:44 am

The Phillies are a worse team than the Mets, is the point. Bullpen or not, Mets are better.

BigPelf4prez September 15, 2008 at 9:59 pm

If Jerry Manuel is so great of a manager, He BETTER STRAIGHTEN THIS TEAM OUT NOW OR THIS FRANCHISE IS GOING DOWN THE TOILET!!

Simon September 15, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Man, no wonder we Mets fans look like such whiners. The same guy just keeps posting over and over again.

We’re a better team than the Phillies and we’re in first place. Chill.

dwright5_godsend September 15, 2008 at 10:09 pm

That’s what I say. There are still a few games left to play. It’s called a pennant RACE. It’s obviously gonna come down to the wire. Can’t be too encouraged after tonight, but baseball is a funny sport. The Mets could crack off 6 or 7 wins in a heartbeat. Bottom line, all we need to do is win to put the pressure on Philly. (obviously easier said than done, don’t grill me for it)

Hit The Weights Zeile September 15, 2008 at 11:35 pm

“we”re still in first place” was the motto of the 2007 Mets.

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 7:45 am

So then let’s just give up, right loser?

BiggieSmalls September 15, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Im sick of this tip your hat line.

This team needs to go out and take it to pitchers like Lannan.

Genesis Does September 15, 2008 at 10:00 pm

and that does it for me. I am not…NOT watching this mess again. See you all in October. I hope to god they win the division, but I dont expect them to.

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 7:47 am

If you are jumping ship, we don’t want to see you in October. Some of us are willing to lay our emotions on the line and not quit for fear of a few painful nights like last night, in the hopes it pays off for us with a payday at the end of the rainbow. If you aren’t willing to come for the ride because you are too weak to handle the potential pain that goes with failure, we don’t want to see you there if they win.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:00 pm

why was there no polls today?

Eli September 15, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Here.

We go.

Again.

Made in the Shea-de September 15, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Let me kick it off here.

“That’s it, were done.”

“Thank goodness it’s football season.”

“I’m never watching them again. I can’t root for this team anymore.”

I’m sure plenty more like that are coming.

Spare me. This is not 2007. Bad loss tonight, no question. But let’s keep some perspective. It’s a pennant race, as Regis says. Hate to go for the cliche, but Ya Gotta Believe.

Should’t have to be saying that – they’re still in first place, and a game up in the L column!

teufelshuffle86 September 15, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Willie?

ToastyJoe September 15, 2008 at 10:05 pm

He trusts his guys.

teufelshuffle86 September 15, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Gotta tip your cap to Lannan, he got in a ‘nice little groove there’

Hit The Weights Zeile September 15, 2008 at 11:36 pm

I said it before and I will say it again…Willie champagne references never get old….

HOFMets57 September 16, 2008 at 7:20 am

“My guys will come through.”

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 7:51 am

I do agree with that last comment — Manuel has to stop the bleeding tonight by turning to NEW blood. With all the lefties lately, Murph has been on the bench. I think it’s time to move Church out of the two hole, where things haven’t been going too smooth, and put Murph there, and keep him there, for a few games. He gets on base, and now you have Church batting 6. I like Tatis but I’d rather see Murph at this point.

And enough punishing Castro — he can still hit and should still be platooning. If this is a peek into what the postseason would be like (Schneider every day), it’s not pretty.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:02 pm

“perspective” you would not happen to be a refugee from the MOFO?

Made in the Shea-de September 15, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Sorry to be naive but I don’t think I know what the MOFO is.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:21 pm

you don’t “think” or you don’t admit

Made in the Shea-de September 15, 2008 at 10:24 pm

No, for real, what is it? Now I’m dying to know: is it a dig at me or what?

DjDeF September 15, 2008 at 10:08 pm

I think we were saying that going into game 160 last year.

Made in the Shea-de September 15, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Nope, last year you could see them going out and looking dazed every night. The end was inevitable. Once they lost to St. Louis I knew it was over.

This is the first time I can recall since July that the team lost bad and then failed to come back and win big. Let’s see what they do tomorrow.

patrick September 16, 2008 at 5:53 am

LOL, so you are saying you knew it was over after game 159 last year. Yo go Aristotle.

HOFMets57 September 16, 2008 at 7:22 am

A “true” fan who knows when to call it quits! Please…

Furioso September 15, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Just like 2007, the deniers will be in their bunkers right up until the bitter end. Some idiot even just busted out the “we’re still in 1st place” line.

Some of you sound like abused spouses.

Made in the Shea-de September 15, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Hm. I wonder who sounds like a bigger idiot, the guy who says the Mets are still in first place and are still in position to win the division if the play at the same winning percentage they have all year… or the guy who thinks the Mets were eliminated tonight because they lost one game.

patrick September 16, 2008 at 5:55 am

Probably the guy who does not realize the Mets have NOT played at the same winning percentage all year.

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 7:53 am

Yeah, Furioso sounds like the guy who abuses the spouse.

Mets17 September 15, 2008 at 10:01 pm

I love the negativity, well at least the Brewers and Astros are choking right along with us, so maybe there wont be a NL Wild Card this year

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:03 pm

The Astros are choking?

The Astros have been playing like a team possessed for well over a month, and they are choking?

therealsince86 September 15, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Seen their last 2 games, seen our last 2 games?

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Yes, I am going to get on a team who had TWO home games moved to Milwaukee while their families and homes sat behind in the midst of a hurricane. Yes, they are chokers…moron.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 15, 2008 at 11:38 pm

wait you mean a game played in milwaukee in a stadium filled with cubs fans isnt a home game four the stros? but bud selig told me it was.

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 8:02 am

I think the Mets should be able to go 8-5 in the next 13 — that’s 8-6 in the final two weeks against an easy schedule. If the Astros can go 11-2, they win. If the Brewers and Phillies BOTH go 9-3, they take it.

Mets are in a better position than the teams chasing them, and just because you were hurt last year doesn’t mean it’s going to happen again. The people that are hovering around thinking this is deja vu and they re going to be disappointed again are actually the ones that sound like the abused spouses someone posted above so eloquently.

Those with positive attitudes will live longer too. :)

Ryn05 September 15, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Just let all the idiots leave the bandwagon.

Joe Bacci September 15, 2008 at 10:10 pm

there you go

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 8:08 am

If they really left they wouldn’t be posting on here over and over. They just say they are leaving so they can reserve some false happiness with the potential failure, in the form of I told you so. A lot of us are comfortable laying it all on the line, some people cannot deal with potential failure. Bottom line is, no one knows if they will win this year or repeat last year. If I knew the ending I would not watch. And if I did know I certainly wouldn’t go around telling those that don’t and spoiling it for them. Why they have to bring people who still believe they can win this thing down to their futile sadness and/or creation of false happiness in failure is beyond me.

backinbusiness September 15, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Can someone explain to me why Schneider called for Duaner to throw 37 outside pitches in a row?

NYMetsGrrl94 September 15, 2008 at 10:03 pm

look at the bright side… wait. there is no bright side

Stems September 15, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Bright side is that we can have October to concentrate on football!

Wayneoo September 15, 2008 at 10:06 pm

At least the collapse won’t be as epic this year.

danlx13 September 15, 2008 at 10:06 pm

it’s still up
the alfonzo jersey

DjDeF September 15, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I think I am done with this team. I hate to give up I hate to quit but it looks like this team has quit. I am sorry 1 hit off of John Lannan is absolutely 1000% inexcusable. The guy barely throws the ball in the strike zone yet these idiots were flailing at pitches in the dirt all night. They have terrible approaches at the plate, the bullpen sucks and never ever ever get the big hit they need.

And of course if they haven’t pissed you off enough they show some fight in the end make you think they have a shot then suck it up again. They do this all the time. They did it Sunday, they did it tonight and I am sure they will do it again tomorrow. Watch this team fall 3 games out of the playoffs then reel off a few wins then blow it in the final game of the season.

Of course I will be there for the misery tomorrow night because I have a problem. I can’t get enough pain and torture.

Why couldn’t my family be major football fans?

dwright5_godsend September 15, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Then shut up and leave. I hate bandwagon fans that only believe in their team when they win.

RodKanehl September 15, 2008 at 10:15 pm

God commands again.

dwright5_godsend September 15, 2008 at 10:19 pm

If i were god, the you would know because the Mets would be 149-0. ;)

Furioso September 15, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I can’t wait for the abuse you’re gonna take after they finish out of the playoffs.

DjDeF September 15, 2008 at 10:25 pm

I can’t wait for that abuse.

DjDeF September 15, 2008 at 10:24 pm

You have no right to call me a bandwagon fan. Absolutely no right. I am sorry I was with this team until the very end as positive as ever last year. I went to the final game pumped up and trying to pull this team through even after the horrible 1st inning all the way to the end holding out hope. I live and die with this team on a nightly basis. I have watched this team fail and come up short so many times throughout the 26 years I have been a met fan.

If you read my second to last line I said I will be back again tomorrow. If I were a bandwagon fan I wouldn’t be back until they start winning. I will be glued to the tv set until they are officially eliminated whether it is regular season or playoffs.

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 8:13 am

My point from above — why are you telling us? Your opinion is that you are sure they will lose against Odalis Perez today. Great. I hope you are wrong. I hope they win. Stop making predictions based on personal feelings.

DjDeF September 16, 2008 at 9:25 am

Even if they crush perez they still have to get outs from the bullpen my friend. The offense has staked the pitchers to 10 run leads in the past and have awfully close to blowing it.

cjr126 September 15, 2008 at 10:07 pm

only way to describe this team is pathetic & gutless

Made in the Shea-de September 15, 2008 at 10:21 pm

LOL. Love it. A week ago all you heard was how much heart they had.

You are making the Philthy fans feel great right now. (Not that they sounded any different last week.)

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:08 pm

I can’t remember the last time the Mets won a pennant race that came down to the wire. This team does not play well historically under pressure late in the season. Does 1999 count? If not for the Brewers beating the Reds 2 out of 3 in the last weekend of the season, the Mets would have fallen short even that year with another bad September.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:10 pm

backing into the wild card is not WINNING a pennant race.

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:13 pm

You can say 1973, but the NL East was putrid that year. You can say 1969, but the Cubs collapsed down the stretch. The Mets franchise has never won a legitimate pennant race that went down to the wire.

Furioso September 15, 2008 at 10:25 pm

“I can’t remember the last time the Mets won a pennant race that came down to the wire”

I believe it was 1973

I discount WC for purposes of this conversation because coming in 2nd is not “winning” a pennant race

gomets6091 September 15, 2008 at 10:32 pm

In ‘97, they lost 5 games in a row in late September to fall out of the Wild Card race. In ‘98 they lost their last 5 games and finished 2 out of the WC. In ‘99 they had a 7 game losing streak in late September and almost blew the Wild Card, but saved themselves the last weekend and in the 1-game playff. In 2000 they played .500 in September but avoided a long losing streak and locked up the WC early, so it wasn’t a big deal. In 2001 they had a phenomenal September surrounding 9/11, but then the Brian Jordan & Armando Benitez show took the Mets out of the race late in the season. ‘02 and ‘03 are irrelevant. In ‘04 they were 11-17 in August and 10-18 in September after the Kazmir trade. In ‘05, aiming for “meaningful games in September” they were 13-15 in September, losing 9 of the first 10 and falling out of the Wild Card hunt. In ‘06, after having wrapped up the division, they went 14-15 in September, losing 10 of 13 at one point in late-Sept.

I don’t think I need to recap last September, but needless to say, it’s by far my least favorite month of the year.

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:48 pm

The San Francisco Giants perfected the June Swoon. The Mets are perfecting the September Dismember.

ridethesnake September 16, 2008 at 8:21 am

You must be young. Before last year, the Mets never lost any race they were leading in their history. The Mets were always the team that came from nowhere and came close or won, historically. Since 1969 they have been the feel good team that comes close, but never a team that fails when ahead. The teams that made it (69, 73, 86, 88, 99, 00, 06) never lost the playoffs they held late until 2007. Most of the teams that fell short of the playoffs were the team on the chase (84, 85, 87, 98), sometimes from far nowhere like the original ‘69.

Maineiac September 15, 2008 at 10:08 pm

And the choke begins!

No_Brain_Willie September 15, 2008 at 10:09 pm

The goal of this series was 3 out of 4. Still possible, still certainly achievable. If they win the remaining 3 vs. a team of lesser calibur like the Nats, job done.

Furioso September 15, 2008 at 10:27 pm

BRANDON KNIGHT WED

SORRY, EPIC FAIL

NYP-BOS-NYP September 15, 2008 at 10:09 pm

I know this is not mathematically true, but I am pretty certain that the Mets must — I repeat, must — win their next two games in a row.

And I am not ordinarily one of the doom & gloom types, but there is no more time for “we’ll get ‘em tomorrows” after tonight. We have now lost 3 of 4. We must get them tomorrow, and we must get them the day after tomorrow. If we do not, we will be in a slump. And if we go into a slump at this point, it’s over, plain and simple.

I expect Jerry Manual to get very creative at this point and shake things up. Maybe this is an overreaction, but I do not want to see any of the following three people for the rest of the month: Luis Castillo, Duaner Sanchez, and Aaron Heilman.

The good news: Bobby Parnell. More Parnell and Rincon, please, Jerry, and less Sanchez and Heilman.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:11 pm

I think at this point, you, I and the rest of the paper bag wearing crew would settle for winning tomorrow.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 15, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Well, I’m certainly willing to take them one at a time, but we need to get back to at least .500 here. Winning 2 of 5 is not .500. 3 of 6, OK, we’ll talk…

patrick September 16, 2008 at 5:58 am

.500? I think you are lost, the Diamondbacks board is yonder way.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 16, 2008 at 7:19 am

I’m not saying .500 is going to get it done. But I’m saying that if we can’t manage at least .500, we’re pretty definitely screwed.

stone11375 September 15, 2008 at 10:12 pm

which is funny because castillo was most of our offense tonight

and by funny i mean really really sad…..

NYP-BOS-NYP September 15, 2008 at 10:20 pm

I know it’s not logical to put all this on Luis, but the fact that we seem to be losing more often than not when he’s in the lineup… I just can’t ignore it anymore.

And honestly, his offensive numbers since coming back have pretty much sucked. Argenis Reyes may not be a super stud either, but he’s young and he has energy, and right now, we need that.

therealsince86 September 15, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I am young with energy maybe I should play 2nd. Fact is Castillo is bad and Awful Reyes is worse.

DjDeF September 15, 2008 at 10:28 pm

It seems like Luis has lost a few steps since last year. It is bad there were a few plays to 2b that he didn’t make good first steps and had no shot today and yesterday. Also on I think Milledge’s low pop in the of looked like Castillo was barely running for the ball.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 15, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Why don’t you report to Nationals Park tomorrow? I’ll buy you a ticket.

Listen, I’ve been a Castillo defender all year, but I’m just not buying it anymore. Maybe it’s something about his demeanor on the field that infects the other players, I don’t know. But it’s just not working.

A. Reyes, on the other hand, is — what did Jerry call him early on? — the kind of player who’s always in the middle of things. I agree he’s cooled off since he started, but taking the big picture into account, I think the team plays with more life and more fight when Argenis is in the lineup. I can’t explain it, it just IS.

4JoeOrsulak September 16, 2008 at 12:38 am

I hate Castillo on my team; but Heinous Reyes will never be more than a defensive replacement/utility infielder in the major leagues. I love Heinous. He’s a spunky player. He, unfortunately, cannot hit at all.

Let us be thankful that Manuel is no longer batting Castillo 2nd.

However this season ends, we have one bright spot, and that is Daniel Murphy. If he can work himself into a decent 2nd baseman next year, it will be the end of Luis Castillo. Everybody already hates Luis and is incensed at the senseless deal that brought him here. Omar will eventually have to face this.

Parvis September 15, 2008 at 10:10 pm

WOW!!! Everyone of you bums ought to be banished from this forum…your scum…Gutless and sure as hell are spineless!!!!

There are 13 games lefts, leave this room now!!! your useless and pathetic…

I will root and continue to cheer for my team and watch them overcome while you band wagoners can just crawl into your holes….

therealsince86 September 15, 2008 at 10:13 pm

No doubt. This is what bothered me last season. Mets are in the middle of a pennant race and instead of cheering on their team the fans went silent until they had a chance to boo. Nice group right there.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:14 pm

There is a difference in booing and admitting that there is an elephant sitting on your head.

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:13 pm

You have to use correct english if you wish to belittle those of us witnessing the painfully obvious and willingly admitting it.

reallypoed September 15, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Your point is well made….however, I like you was cheering on this team last year when they were doing the same thing…and well, we know how the ended…and there are too many similarities right now that I’m sure you can understand why it is incredibly demoralizing and frankly I’m feeling like crap and that this team can not do it

moogman September 15, 2008 at 10:11 pm

I think Ron said it best about how much a team can take – how resilient you can be – when one segment of your club keeps letting you down.

1-3 @ DC
1-2 @ ATL
0-4 vs. CHC: ELIMINATED (PHI would have played well at this point)
2-1 vs. FLA (gotta have a nice send off for old times sake).

I believe Shea is a jinx, the anti-Yankee Stadium, if you will. Happy to see it go.

Gland September 15, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Does anyone know of a Mets blog where the posters are actually fans of the team?

DjDeF September 15, 2008 at 10:33 pm

being a fan doesn’t have to mean having confidence in the team. Ask BoSox fans circa 2003. If you ever knew a Sox fan prior to 2004 you would have seen a team that was so down on its team even when they were on runs to the WS. They still rooted they still held out hope no matter what. I think the people that are saying its done and over with still care, still will watch and root, it is just that they have basically created a buffer so that if and when they do miss not winning the division/wild car they have been prepared for it.

Gland September 16, 2008 at 9:07 am

“They still rooted they still held out hope no matter what”

Well it sure seems like a lot of folks around here don’t fit that description.

DjDeF September 16, 2008 at 9:26 am

I think we are down on the team. We are expecting nothing from them at this point but we still hope they prove us wrong.

Furioso September 15, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Do they deserve fans?

moogman September 15, 2008 at 11:30 pm

I have every right to cheer or boo or criticize or praise. My time and money is valuable – and this team is getting that – good times and bad.

I have to right to vent or be displeased when my investment is not showing a profitable return.

rigsay September 15, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Part of me wants to stick by this team (we’re STILL in first afterall) and come together to support them and fill Shea next week.

Part of me is sick to my stomach and pissed watching these bums waste another 6 months of my life.

Jerry, STOP throwing Sanchez, Heilman and Feliciano, THEY SUCK, and this isn’t 2006. Go with the “hot” hand, be it Stokes, Parnell, Rincon, Smith, whoever. What is wrong with pitching Al Reyes?? They guy saved a lot of games last year. How much worse could it get?

Lastly our “MVP” middle of the order, 0-11 tonight. Inexcusable for all of them to fall asleep.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather go out playing Murphy, Evans, Argenis than Castillo, Tatis and other washed up re-treads.

And Pedro is done. DONE!

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:12 pm

The Mets offense is a joke. If they ever got any runs they would be well in first place. Instead they choke. The Mets should have STOMPED on the Nats. Instead it played out like a playoff game. Even if the Mets win the division or the wild card they are going to get killed UNLESS they start playing ball. Jerry has been doing a much better job than Willie ever did but unless he starts getting this team going again I would dump him as soon as the season is over. Just because he isn’t Willie doesn’t make him the savior of the Mets.

zigner September 15, 2008 at 11:46 pm

“If they ever got any runs they would be well in first place”

They are second in the league in runs scored. Would that fact make it difficult to defend your comment? lol

MetsFan4Decades September 15, 2008 at 10:12 pm

I’ll bet next month’s salary all you who posted ‘I’m done with this team and not watching anymore’, will be right back on here tomorrow night – commenting on the game you are watching.

Face it: If you are a true Mets fan, you have to like pain – you’ll be here. If not, how can you call yourself a fan?

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:15 pm

I just want to point out for clarity I have not said I am done, I am just trying to point out the obvious.

MetsFan4Decades September 15, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I was commenting on the posters who posted variations of ‘See you in Oct., I’m done’, or ‘I’m done, moving on to football, see you next year’, etc. etc. etc.
I’m right there with everyone who is beyond frustrated, and voicing it loudly. Just annoyed with those who truly mean they only support the team when things are going well, and don’t bother when they’re not. Truly the definition of ’sore loser’……

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:25 pm

I don’t think anyone posting on here is doing so based on anything other than die hard painful frustration. Fair weather fans do not waste their time on blogs.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 15, 2008 at 10:36 pm

I did say something along the lines of “it’s over, see you next year” in the game thread tonight; it was a bit of hyperbole and it felt good.

However, while I will be with this team up to the end, I do think the end is going to be upon us very, very quickly if things do not improve stat. There really isn’t much margin for error left, and I don’t like the way this team has looked in their last four games. I don’t like it at all.

moogman September 15, 2008 at 10:15 pm

There is such a thing as “too much pain”.

MetsFan4Decades September 15, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Yeah, I hear you. Now where did I put my meds????

moogman September 15, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I think the last game’s promotion is “Valium Night” – first 55,000 adults 21 and over.

patrick September 16, 2008 at 6:00 am

Actually cyanide.

Furioso September 15, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Is there a reason the writers of this blog don’t use the word choke to describe this?

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Probably because this website is an inch away from being owned by the Mets.

Sylar September 15, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Well let’s see…

September Records:

Mets: 7-5
Phillies: 8-5

That could be one reason….

dykstraw September 15, 2008 at 10:17 pm

i didn’t watch tonight. more interested in the market trouble.

i doubt i’ll even be that upset this september. we’re used to this by now!

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:27 pm

The Mets are making the economy look bullish when you compare it to their play.

Paperboy September 15, 2008 at 10:17 pm

We’re in FIRST PLACE. Would you rather be a Phillies fan now, or a Mets fan?

The Mets are 7-5 this September. That’s a .583 win pct. That’s not a choke job at all.

The Mets have the best lineup in the NL, and a team that is almost unbeatable when Pelfrey or Santana are on the mound.

A winning streak is on the horizon.

YA GOTTA BELIEVE!

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:20 pm

the mets were 10-2 in september before the collapse last year

therealsince86 September 15, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Good to know and I just saved 10% on my car insurance thanks to Matt.

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:22 pm

i like the sense of humor, what’s the positive spin for today?

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:21 pm

The Mets need to show a little heart. Stop letting these crappy teams have a chance. They should be stomping on these teams but instead the Braves and Nats are playing too well against the Mets. The Phillies are playing with heart even though they have a worse team. Omar should see how the team is playing and dump the bullpen after this year. They are dragging the team down even when they don’t suck.

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:25 pm

how do the phillies have a worse team?

their starters 1-4 are better than our 1-4
their bullpen is light years better than ours
their offense comes up big in big spots
their team can come back from ANY defecit ours cannot

i think the phillies have been underperforming, but that might have all changed. let’s just hope the brewers keep losing (let’s go cubs these next three games)

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:36 pm

The Phillies are lacking in almost every single position in comparison to the Mets. Their 2B is much better than ours but in every other spot I would rather have a Mets player. Their pitching is not as good as the Mets. The two big factors are that the Phillies can get 20,000 runs a game at home and that their offense NEVER gives up.

gomets6091 September 15, 2008 at 10:41 pm

you’d rather have Ayala than Lidge?

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Lidge is the only good reliever on the Phils and they just got amazingly lucky with him. Damn them. The rest of their bullpen is just as horrible as the Mets bullpen.

patrick September 16, 2008 at 6:02 am

you’d rather have Delgado than Howard? Can we just strap on the sanity helmet for A SECOND?

I really like Delgado and I am happy he has been able to turn it around, but that is just an insane oversight on your part.

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:23 pm

The Phillies are playing much better baseball. I would be a lot more confident.

reallypoed September 15, 2008 at 10:25 pm

um I’d much rather be a phillies fan right now…they just swept the brewers are tied for the wild card lead and are as we speak .5 game behind us….and they play atl, fla and was the rest of the way…….we have to play 4 with the cubs so idk what your talkin about,

RodKanehl September 15, 2008 at 10:35 pm

and what drug are you on tonight?

Furioso September 15, 2008 at 10:38 pm

We’re in FIRST PLACE. Would you rather be a Phillies fan now, or a Mets fan?

Philly sad to say. They won last year and will win this year. After tomorrow, “1st place” will be defunct

The Mets are 7-5 this September. That’s a .583 win pct. That’s not a choke job at all.

Lose 2/3 to Philly. 2/3 to braves. Tonite and the Knight game. Yeah…..that’s a choke

The Mets have the best lineup in the NL, and a team that is almost unbeatable when Pelfrey or Santana are on the mound.

Um…no they don’t. And no they aren’t.

A winning streak is on the horizon.

Longer than 1?

YA GOTTA BELIEVE!

No. I do not believe in this team. I am honest about that

hjhjhjhjhj September 16, 2008 at 10:36 am

so then go root for another team…its that simple…LEAVE!!!!

amazin92 September 15, 2008 at 10:19 pm

TAKE IT DOWN GOD DAMMIT!!

4eyeJoe September 15, 2008 at 10:20 pm

the only good thing out of this game is that it only takes a rookie to get an easy 1-2-3 inning. hope to see more of Parnell.

i have no confidence in Pedro Martinez anymore. why does he continue to pitch outside to hitters when he should be using his breaking pitches on the inside of the plate.

duaner sanchez and bullpen…………. T_T

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:25 pm

I really think the Mets need to invest in their minor league system and let it grow over the next few years. It will suck but its the best way to really build up a team. The Mets are suffering now because they have tried to build a playoff team by trading their prospects. Give it a few years of building up a minor league system and the Mets would be the best team in the NL. Every time the Mets sign an old player he gets injured so instead the Mets should go young.

Eggman September 15, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Pedro is finished. Before Anderson came out Gary mused about posiibly walking him and Ron shot that down, rightfully so. I mean c’mon – Anderson Hernandez? The fact that Hernandez delivered a huge 2 out hit speaks volumes about Pedro’s status these days.

Slappy must be benched. He is a dark cloud, whether it’s his fault or not..

Murphy HAS to play every day.

Schneider is brutal. And where did he get that “great defensively” rep? He can’t catch a ball if it’s not right at him.

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Anderson Hernandez is a great player. He should have been the Mets 2B but the Mets love to sign injured old guys. I was not surprised at all when he got a key hit. He is a good player and has a ton of potential.

Schneider is the best Mets catcher. We have been spoiled on amazing catchers and don’t realize how good Schneider is. He has saved so many horrible throws by crappy Mets pitchers. I would rather have him out there than Cancel.

4eyeJoe September 15, 2008 at 10:36 pm

castillo is a curse on the mets franchise. some seriously bad juju.

by the way…where the hell is jose reyes…….get on base damn it!!!!

BigPelf4prez September 15, 2008 at 10:29 pm

I have defended Pedro enough. Im done with this guy. He is DONE!! He can;t get a guy like Hernandez out?? Petey its time to hang it up.

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:32 pm

How about the offense not getting anything done? Its their fault they couldn’t win. Try actually hitting against the worst team in the league. Pedro pitched alright. He just got no support.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 16, 2008 at 7:26 am

When, exactly, have you defended Pedro?

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Why does everyone a penant race?

was September 2006 better or was September 2007?

people only want a penant race if their team wins

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:32 pm

everyone * love* a

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:33 pm

The Mets have never won a legitimate pennant race. You can say history doesn’t matter, but the Mets have also never had a no hitter and you know that’s not changing anytime soon.

risingcurveball September 15, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Finally we can blame Omar for this and not Willie or Jerry cause it’s clearly a talent problem

BigPelf4prez September 15, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Its not a talent problem you moron. This team has plenty of talent and has for 2 years. It’s the fact that the team has no heart and they will once again roll over and die like last year. WHERES WILLIE??

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:38 pm

The Mets do have a lack of talent. Luis Castillo is not a good second baseman. He sucks. Tatis is not good enough for the outfield. The Mets bench sucks. The Mets have not many guys that can come out of the bullpen and be consistantly good. Its a lack of talent that was not addressed in the offseason.

Wrighton92 September 15, 2008 at 10:44 pm

no sir, i believe YOU are a moron.

MetalMet September 15, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Ya Gotta Bereave

:/

DWright31 September 15, 2008 at 10:34 pm

If the Mets dont win the division this year, I’ll never buy tickets again. I sucked it up this year, we got Johan, I was happy. But no, if we choke again, Im done with the tickets, new stadium or not. This team is a JOKE right now and the collapse is in full effect.

gomets6091 September 15, 2008 at 10:42 pm

sweet, more tickets for me.

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:43 pm

They’re not going to go after anyone this offseason. Citi Field alone is god enough for a full season of sellouts. They won’t have to do anything until next offseason.

Sylar September 15, 2008 at 10:48 pm

So you don’t think they’re going to do anything? You don’t think they’ll try to resign Ollie, or go after 1 or 2 starters, or get OF help, or even attempt to sign K-Rod?

Yep, that seems COMPLETELY realistic. (or the complete opposite of realistic, but whatever)

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:54 pm

I expect the Mets to go after KRod but not be willing to give him 5 years. Thats understandable because he is just asking for an injury. Ollie is probably either going to the Mets or the Yankees.

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:49 pm

I see two ways for the team to go in the offseason. Either sign KRod and go for a win in the first season at Citi Field OR go with young players in the minor league system. if they go with their minors system they can bank on the new stadium bringing in profits while the team stinks until their minor system can build up. I don’t really see the Mets doing that. The only time the Mets have ever built up their minors was in the early 80s. In the entire rest of their history they have given away their young players like candy on Halloween.

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:38 pm

did they show manuel’s post game? cause i missed it

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:40 pm

I turned off the game when the Mets blew a chance with the bases loaded.

Central NJ Mets fan September 15, 2008 at 10:47 pm

So did I. This team is making me sick to my stomach.

D-Day September 15, 2008 at 10:43 pm

well, looks like the ghosts of last year are haunting us even as fans. last year almost all of us held out and kept hoping till the end only for the biggest letdown in baseball history (regular season anyway). now we are so fed up with it that even at the slightest sign of a collapse we are throwing in the towel. im as negative as anyone at times but lets see this thing through. the lead is essentially gone so its neck and neck for the phils and us down the stretch. they can be as bipolar a team as us so dont be suprised if in the next few days momentum swings in our favor again. tough loss but dont jump yet folks! lets manup and get them tomorrow! LETS GO METS!!!!!

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:47 pm

i don’t think people are jumping ship, its just that they are preparing themselves for a let down.

this is what most of us did last year.

i’ll be watching tomorrow, but what does it mean if they win tomorrow? they still have knight going on wednesday. and what does a 4 game split mean? these are the nationals.

Lets Go Mets, but i am not holding my breath cause this team does not show up when it counts

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:51 pm

I agree, its getting ready for the depression. When grandma is sick with cancer you hope for the best but prepare for the worst. The same goes for the Mets.

On a side note, anyone else notice that the team has sucked since Castillo came back?

cjr126 September 16, 2008 at 12:29 am

castillo just seems to suck the life out of this team

The Slider September 15, 2008 at 10:54 pm

On the other hand, we have started off a bunch series (especially against the Phillies) with heartbreaking losses and have come back strong.

We have to take this series game at a time. No matter how you broke up the four game series, we needed to take three of them. I personally don’t care which three they are. This puts a little more pressure on us now, but, so what? Besides, we got Big Pelf going tomorrow.

Let’s Go Mets!

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:56 pm

we do need 3 of 4, they took 3 of 4 from the marlins last year at the very same time.

Wrighton92 September 15, 2008 at 10:46 pm

why is wright being wrecked while jose hasn’t been able to get on base to save his life?

SantanaCYYOung September 15, 2008 at 10:50 pm

at the mendoza line in september, been saying it.

Last Sunday after the ESPN doubleheader (day/night), Jose Reyes was at a club in Queens (I was there cause I DJ there) and he arrived with ramon martinez and a. reyes and stayed until 3 AM and were drinking heavily. I know that there was an off day the next day, but they had just played two games against a division rival and were at the stadium for the entire day.

i have heard other situations of reyes and his late nights, but i couldn’t believe he was there that day

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 11:04 pm

The Mets in the mid 80s partied too. Its part of being young and famous in NY. If he got arrested then I would be worried.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 15, 2008 at 11:45 pm

I hate people who say reyes parties too much. give me a break every famous young baseball player in NY has partied. And like you said they had an off day so whats the problem. you didnt see him the night before a game you only HEARD of that. lets focus on the real issue here, our bullpen blows, and our offense is scared.

DjDeF September 15, 2008 at 10:56 pm

I made a comment 2 days ago and everyone jumped on me. I will admit he isn’t popping up as much as he was earlier in september but he sure is flailing at the ball and completely lost at the plate. The only thing he did well tonight was notice the RP was struggling with command and knew he was getting a fastball down the plate and he hit it up the middle

as for why wright is getting it more plain and simple he grounded into a dp with the bases loaded. Not expecting a hr but keep the line moving for the next guy. We can’t expect GS’s but if he gets a hit you still have Delgado and Beltran coming up with a rattled pitcher. He didn’t even hit the ball hard

hjhjhjhjhj September 16, 2008 at 10:42 am

i guess what he has done in the last 5 games doesnt count?

The Slider September 15, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Not that this helps us out now, but the bullpen should be completely overhauled for next season. There are probably a couple I might keep, but otherwise . . . .

-Heilman? Gone

-Sanchez? Gone

-Schoenewies? Gone

-Wagner? Obviously, gone

-On the bubble: Joe Smith, Feliciano, Ayala, Stokes, Rincon.

toomanyuniforms September 15, 2008 at 10:50 pm

I was at the game. They hit some “at ‘em” balls early, but generally, they just couldn’t get any kind of contact consistently, and looked generally hangdog the entire night. That tremendous sucking sound you’re hearing is Luis Castillo’s effect on the team. Honestly, it’s like night and day when he’s on the team or off. I can’t explain it.

The Slider September 15, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Give some credit where credit is due. Lannon pitched real well tonight. I posted that on the game thread early on. It was clear he had his good stuff and he shut us down.

Hopefully, this is a wake-up call for our remaining games against Florida, Atalnta and the Cubs. No one is going to lie down on us. We have to take it from them.

DjDeF September 15, 2008 at 10:57 pm

He was throwing the ball in the dirt and the idiots in gray were swinging. Sorry this team should not be tipping its cap to lannon.

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:58 pm

The Mets swung at horrible stuff tonight. They looked like me at the batting cages when its set to 80 mph. I don’t get paid to play the game though. I expect the Mets to be able to play against garbage teams like the Nats.

toomanyuniforms September 15, 2008 at 11:18 pm

More than that, the other teams are smelling blood. The word is out around the league, I’m sure, that this team is soft and ripe for the thrashing. The Mets need to take offense and get focus. This is not a statistical anomaly. They are choking. Again.

patrick September 16, 2008 at 6:04 am

You can’t explain it, because it is not the problem.

A few things here.

I am going to start off getting at matt. Matt has gone on and on about there is no such thing as a jinx blah blah blah. Yet this is a guy who has a “lucky” jersey that he only wears to or for big games. Now I do not see the magic number on the site because I have blocked it in firefox but did he really change it from the philly phanatic chasing mr met? Wasn’t the jersey thing what he did in 2006?

Can someone explain why every team cares to play the role of spoiler to the mets more then the Phillies? Is it the New York thing, is it that we “celebrate” too much what is it?

X-Man September 15, 2008 at 10:56 pm

I’ve finally figured out how to save myself lots aggravation and be able to watch the remaining games with piece of mind.

from now on I will check the pre-game line-up and if I see Castillo’s name I will simply not watch the game and watch a movie instead. I have the premium package with Cable Vision and there is always a good movie on. I’d rather watch Enchanted for the hundredth time with my 8-year than watch this bum play.

The Slider September 15, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Funny you mention that. I was talking to a Mets fan friend of mine, who happens to live in DC, who said that even if we did win the Division, this has been such a miserable experience – and he’s right.

X-Man September 15, 2008 at 11:12 pm

They are taking a year or two of my life span. I go to work sometimes pissed especially since all the Yankee fans at my office relish the idea that the Mets are on the verge of choking again and like they say, misery likes company.

The Slider September 16, 2008 at 12:04 am

I hear from my Yankee fans, plus I live in Philadelphia. I’ll switch places with you any day of the week.

mookie September 15, 2008 at 11:16 pm

I’m reposting:
I don’t want to say it but I partly blame it on Matt and his posting of the magic number. My mom taught me at an early age ” son respect the streak, and do everything you can not to jinx us.” Baseball players are the most superstitious people for a reason.
I will reserve the bottom space for your insults towards me.

toomanyuniforms September 15, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Folks, watching tonight’s game, I have to say, I will not be surprised at all if we are swept. Not a bit. Looking at how crisply the Nats played, how relaxed and loose, and contrasting that with the incredibly tight, slack-adaisical Mets, we’ve the makings of something humiliating.

LL September 15, 2008 at 11:25 pm

I’m not that superstitous. Actually, I don’t want to think I am. But ever since that stupid magic number thing went up, well it’s been horrible. Matt, you can’t mess with things like that sometimes. You have to really take it off. I know it sounds silly, but you have to get rid of it. The whole thing, even the Alfonzo jersey. It’s just not good. Come on man. Swallow your pride, just take it off. You’re a Met fan man. You know how it is.

alpitt September 15, 2008 at 11:29 pm

It’s really pretty interesting to see both sides (the ya-gotta-believers and the 2007 2.0′ers) and everything in between here tonight. At this point, though, I honestly can’t blame the extremists (well not the utmost extremists, but you know). This year has been been, if it’s even possible, more frustrating than last. I realize every division crown can’t be won by 15 games but the same September problems again? It’s like a sick sick joke.

Everyone here is a fan, and everyone here will be watching tomorrow no matter how adamant they were about giving up. This is because there IS hope, as far off as it seems sometimes, ie tonight. But watching this team often adds up to forcing torture upon yourself. Someone put it best by comparing it to the abused wife who won’t split with her husband because she loves him. If they falter down the stretch, I can’t help but ask: will I have the energy for it next year? To put in countless hours watching, reading about, thinking about this team. I’m just not sure. Being a die hard fan is quite the burden.

Buckners Ankle September 15, 2008 at 11:36 pm

OK Matt…how about an experiment? Take the number down for one game. If they win…keep it down…if they lose, its probably irrelevant anyway. 85% of those who voted wanted it up NEVER or with less than 5 games to go. Please respect your base. ‘Nuff said. Thanks.

mettieboys September 15, 2008 at 11:35 pm

pedro martinez is trash. he is robbing the mets of millions of dollars. i know he didnt give up all seven runs, but it is already known that the bullpen sucks. sorry to be such a bummer, but with espn and all the other sports networks bringin up “last years collapse” it just seems bound to happen again. i still am however a hopeful mets fan. so until it actually happens, LETS GO METS!

ryankobayashi September 15, 2008 at 11:38 pm

I was at the game, too. It really hurts when these Nats fans can talk trash to you and you really have no comeback.

They have that listless look about them again…they played not to lose. Whoever said Pedro didn’t have an out pitch is damn right. He nibbled and nibbled…just sad.

Sanchez is terrible. I have no idea how Castillo is allowed to wear an MLB uniform. Where is the pride in any of these guys? Do they expect these teams to lay down for them? How did that work out last year?

I’ve grown up believing in the “Ya Gotta Believe” mantra, even in the lean years. I think this franchise has lost it’s mojo, and I’m not sure why…

f.e September 15, 2008 at 11:45 pm

Hey at least this year will be over earlier than the last game
I keep reading how this team is different than last year but even the last two months havent proven any thing to me If they blow it they really need to blow this thing up from every part and start from scratch there is a lot of good peices to this team but 3 years prove to me that they cant do it in its current form you cant have a team flip flop around and have sucess the wins are ugly and the loses are even uglier

mettieboys September 15, 2008 at 11:47 pm

and matt don’t listen to these idiots…you aren’t jinxing the mets with the magic number. the mets are simply not performing. keep up the good work bro. love this site.

f.e September 15, 2008 at 11:57 pm

your right this team jinxes itself it has nothing to do with a stupid #
The mets are becomeing a joke to baseball these guys dont care about a countdown # to clinch the care about there paychecks go back to the old way of the cheap ownership and get some players that play to keep there job not to get a big paycheck from a NY team we already have five teams that do that yankees knicks jets rangers and mets

dykstraw September 16, 2008 at 12:02 am

i just saw matt on cnbc!

he was counting down AIG’s magic number to meeting its counterparty collateral requirements.

(just kidding…this isn’t matt’s fault…it’s castillo’s)

tinathemetsgrl September 16, 2008 at 12:02 am

What was Gary’s call after Dauner gave up the three run bomb to Dukes? Something about in September, with this bullpen.. Missed the last part, but he sounded dead serious. I had MASN on tonight. This team is ridiculous. Get it together, will you.

dykstraw September 16, 2008 at 12:12 am

i didn’t catch it all, but it most have been good because sportscenter led the show in with it.

Lets_Go_Mets September 16, 2008 at 12:26 am

“You’re coming down the stretch in a pennant race and who in that bullpen can a manager trust?”

tinathemetsgrl September 16, 2008 at 1:50 am

Thankss

4eyeJoe September 16, 2008 at 12:03 am

so what are the chances of Cox and the braves bending over for the phillies in the 3 games? 85% chance by me.

every freaking weak team for some reason always play way over their head against the mets in september. always sticking it to the mets and the mets fan, but will roll over and play dead for teams like the phillies.

and note to david wright, manny acta gave you the finger when he left that lefty in there to face you when it was supposed to be a righty in that bases loaded situation. better go 4 for 4 tomorrow and absolutely kill the nats.

jose reyes needs to get his head out of the you know what and get on freakin’ base, also swipe some bags.

Evans and A Reyes should be in the lineup tomorrow.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 12:13 am

Exactly. We need to shake it up a bit. I say give Ricardo Rincon and Bobby Parnell a change out of the pen. Let Evans go out in LF. And why not Murphy or Tatis at second? What do we got to lose? Argenis is okay too. It’s not like he hasn’t produced when we needed him too. Much better than Luis.

The Braves play both the Mets and Phillies tough. Especially in Atlanta. That can work against the Mets later in the week unfortunately, but maybe the Braves can take care of business. Hopefully they take 2 out of 3, but even if they can take one that’s ok. That means to pace with them, the Mets have to win either 2 or 3 against the Nats. Forget today. It’s a 3 game series now and a 3 game series is easier to sweep than a 4.

Danny September 16, 2008 at 12:53 am

Reyes had both RBIs today.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 12:10 am

All of us just need to calm down and relax. There’s a long way to go. 13 games. This team has bounced back. They’ve had tough droughts with Manuel. Just look at that Astros sweep. They had lost 4 in a row. This team can do it. I don’t know if they will, but I’m going to hope for it. The good news is they’re still up 1/2 game on the Phillies. Philly taking a day off and going away from home will screw with their momentum.

Just look at the Mets. When did they start screwing up? When they started getting days off. You can date it back to that 10 game win streak. They won 9 straight and got off a few from the All-Star break and cooled off. They were off 4 out of their last 10 days. They were off the day before they played the Phillies when they lost on Friday. Than they were off Saturday because of the rain and split the following day.

Than they were off Monday. They won Tuesday and Wednesday. But than they get off Thursday and than Friday because of the rain. And than they lose 3 our of 4. Overall in they are 4-5 in their last 9 games which isn’t horrible, but it’s not what we’re used to. We were lucky to see Philly lose 2 out of 3 to both the Nats and Marlins, but they’ve made up for it.

Do you know how many times the Phillies were up like 2 on the Mets and the Mets swang back? And than the Mets were up 3 on the Phillies and they came back? You know what I say? Screw all that. There’s a 13 game season left. Only 12 for the Phillies and one extra loss – a big advantage. Plus, we win the division in the event of a tie record with both of us clinching.

It’s a new season. Do it. The Mets don’t have any more interruptions. That means once we get hot – we aren’t going to cool down. No days off. And we’re scheduled to have our ace on the most important day of the season. Let’s just do it.

dykstraw September 16, 2008 at 12:14 am

i was gonna give you credit for a long, well-thought out post, but then i realized i read it last year.

(nothing personal.)

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 12:15 am

Who’s post we you referring to? lol I was just asking because I don’t remember if I wrote on here last season.. I don’t think I did

mookie September 16, 2008 at 12:31 am

I believe its good old sarcasm.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 12:14 am

Maybe you should take the magic number off just to satisfy these guys lol We know you didn’t jinx it, but we know you don’t help either. You should write an article in explaining that you didn’t realize it was 17 games when you wrote it… Unless you did it on purpose. I hope you didn’t

cjr126 September 16, 2008 at 12:21 am

with the way our bullpen is pitching the phillies magic number should be 1

f.e September 16, 2008 at 12:30 am

you kow what the phillies have done everything in there power to give us this division I cant beleive that they are going to blow again they have to smell blood this time and Iam afraid they are going to close this out sooner than later
they have to be in the best place out of every team out there both the wild card and the division is extremly reachable with there schedule and unfortunatly they have dominated the remaining teams ion there schedule

cjr126 September 16, 2008 at 12:25 am

i’d rather see danny murphy play full time regardless of whether a lefty or righty is pitching………he seems to spark our team whenever he plays.

DFolk18 September 16, 2008 at 12:29 am

We’ve lost two in a row, no need to panic yet. A win tomorrow and things will be back to normal. This team is not last year’s team. This team shows heart. There is a different manager in that clubhouse, someone who gets fired up and will put certain people in their place. Our starting pitching has been great. Our line-up scores runs. The bullpen is shaky, but up until the Braves series they had been getting the job done.

We won 21 of 29 before the loss to the Braves yesterday. These last two games were a bump in the road. No reason to believe that we can’t rattle off a nice win streak in order to close this season out the right way.

f.e September 16, 2008 at 12:31 am

where do they show heart
remember last year they had a good run befor the collapse

f.e September 16, 2008 at 12:34 am

I hope your right but I see the same core of non clutch players out there minus santana whom we havent seen in the clutch yet

DFolk18 September 16, 2008 at 12:35 am

Where do they show heart?? They’ve shown tremendous heart since July. Last year’s team began the year like a team poised to win it all, then they blew it. This year’s team was mediocre until July. Then they took off.

IT’S A TWO GAME LOSING STREAK. WHY IS EVERYONE ACTING LIKE THE SEASON IS OVER? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO “YA GOTTA BELIEVE”?

This line-up is as good as it gets in the NL and the starting pitching has been phenomenal. It’s not over guys.

KingWright September 16, 2008 at 12:32 am

Great post. Lets Go Mets.

rockets212 September 16, 2008 at 12:32 am

all we need is an ace like performance from pelf tomorrow, like 8 innings one or no runs, and the offense explodes with bunches of hits not with HRs. Thats all i want out of a struggling team

wrightstuff08 September 16, 2008 at 12:48 am

No matter what happens, Omar gets to keep his cushy job for ‘09 and the Wilpons are laughing all the way to the bank. LOL, just had to change the subject matter a little. Seriously, the Mets arent out of it yet , but if they collapse again, wholesale changes MUST be carried out and a lot of older players MUST be shown the door!

uppertank September 16, 2008 at 12:38 am

when things go bad with the Mets, blame it on Castillo.

J0eSmiTh September 16, 2008 at 12:39 am

lets hire ned yost. we need a little fire.

lol

uppertank September 16, 2008 at 12:42 am

Re-fire Willy!!!!

DFolk18 September 16, 2008 at 12:43 am

Haha brilliant

sgadz September 16, 2008 at 12:46 am

When terrible things happen, somehow people still keep faith that it will get better.

Despite the pain I have felt watching this team for over twenty years, I still have a hope…a dream even that they can elate us and rock that stadium.

So, as hard as it is to do, my fellow Met fans, let’s keep believing.

metsluc September 16, 2008 at 12:58 am

terrible loss i understand but i believe this is a different team then last year … im not worried but tomorrow is a big game for pelf.. as for the second base situation, luis castillo is absolutley awful and i would rather argenis start if easley cant ..its only fitting that he makes the last out of the game on a slap to left field.. not only does he not hit his defense is bad too, he has no range whatsoever.

wallybackman'sfire September 16, 2008 at 1:23 am

This team must have the oddest collective psychological profile. Experts in the field of Abnormal Psychology should do an in depth case study of the ‘07-’08 Mets.

When the very thing they have worked so long and hard for – the play-offs/post-season/first place – is right there in their grasp, they fall to pieces.

When things start going wrong, this entire team has a way of pressing and locking-up when it counts. It just takes over the entire team like a switch being turned off.

You can just feel it. They are going to blow it again this year. Mark my words – the Mets win one of 4 in Washington, as the Phillies lay claim to first place for good this week.

And yeah, seeing that magic number remain virtually un-changed for a week now is damn annoying. It won’t be up much longer though because second place is the Mets fate again.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 2:17 am

I’m sorry, but I’m going to second that. These last 4 days have been rough. Yes, I know. The Phillies sweeping Milwaukee has gotten us a little nervous.

Does this means the Phillies have ”gotten hot?” No. Milwaukee is ice cold. They just fired their manager because of it. Can you tell me the Phillies have not played down to their competition? They lost 2 of 3 to both the Nats and Marlins (home). If it weren’t for those 2 losses, the Mets would be 1 1/2 back. Now they get the Braves at home. And you know they’ll be waiting. They don’t even have a scheduled starter against Jair Jurrjens yet.

Mark my words. The Mets are in the playoffs come 5 or 6 o’clock thirteen days from now. Don’t ask how I know. I just know. I can see through all this temporary pain.

Don’t all of you realize something? This pain we’re dealing with is going to make it all the more sweeter. It would have been nicer to cruise into winning the division – but this is going to make the feeling amazing. Do you know what kind of celebration they’ll be?

It will be the division too. And the Phillies will win the wild card and perhaps they’ll be a NLCS meeting. If the Mets win the division, than you can say I told you so lol And you’ll be happy doing so. If they lose – which they won’t, I promise I’ll come on here and call myself what ever you want me to. If they win the wild card, we can call it a tie.

yougottabelieve84 September 16, 2008 at 3:23 am

The saying goes you gotta believe. And i really want to. I love following this team. I love cheering for every single player. I watch them night in and night out and I will not stop, but it seems like “believing” is getting harder and harder to do. I would like to believe a team can hold a multi run lead in the 9th. I would like to believe a team can hold a 7 game lead with 17 games to play (or a 7 run lead with 17 outs to go). I would also like to believe a team can stop resorting to arms that cant record an out without giving up 3 runs. I would love to believe all these, but apparently the Mets cannot.
This team is blessed with talent at so many positions. They show amazing will at times and can make you think they are the real deal. They have also shown signs of a team that is clueless at the plate, unable to locate the strike zone and seem to fold at the slightest sign of adversity.
I think Mets have come back from a 3 + run deficit a total of 2 or 3 times all year. How many 3+ run leads have they given up? About 15? I just don’t see how a fan of any team that does that can have faith left for a magical turnaround.
In essence I would like to believe they can win the division this year, but I would also like a tangible reason to do so…

patrick September 16, 2008 at 6:09 am

Ya gotta Stick Forks in Your Eyes.

mdemaio September 16, 2008 at 8:09 am

I believe in Harvey Dent!

Phillies in NYC September 16, 2008 at 8:22 am

I smell another collapse!!! hahahaha have fun on the golf course in October all you loser Mets fans…..Let’s go Phils!!!

chronique1 September 16, 2008 at 8:35 am

So you make the playoffs and go down in the 1st round without winning a game again?

BaysideBillyD September 16, 2008 at 8:34 am

The important thing is that the team puts a loss like last night’s behind them.
Tonight is another chance to get on the right track. I believe they will.

Being a Met fan is all about hope. Always has been. Nothing has EVER come easy for this team or for its fans. This season is no exception.
Our team’s success is not our birthright (see: Yankee fans). We live and die with our boys day-in and day-out for the entire season. We pray in front of the TV or at the stadium for them to pull out a win, sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. But the one thing that remains a constant is the hope.
In teh immortal words of Jimmy V:
“Don’t give up…. Don’t ever give up.”
I’m not giving up, and neither is my team.
Let’s go Mets.

Phillies in NYC September 16, 2008 at 8:47 am

Yea right chronic– with Hamels and Myers in a 3 game series starting and lights out Lidge slamming the door they would win at least one series

rantman888 September 16, 2008 at 9:04 am

Can anyone find their record with Castillo in and out of the lineup? It would be very interesting to see.

rantman888 September 16, 2008 at 10:07 am

Found it (baseball-reference.com)

With Castillo in lineup (total appearances): 37-42

Without: 46-24

Pretty big difference. I know he wasn’t the guy who gave up all those runs and nobody else could hit at all. There’s just something about this team with him there. They were looking pretty good before Easley got hurt. At this point, they can’t be much worse with A. Reyes in the lineup. Jerry has to try something to get these guys going again.

koosman September 16, 2008 at 9:09 am

“The Nationals (57-93) are determined to play the role of spoiler”

Yes. And the Mets look determined to once again play the role of pansy.

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:29 pm

You should be ashamed of yourself. ;)

patrick September 15, 2008 at 10:29 pm

I share your frustration. But you need to seek a grammar check.

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Great job with not figuring out where the caps lock button is.

I do agree that Wright is not clutch. He can’t get a hit when it really counts. He loves to get solo home runs. He needs to stop being the Mets A Rod.

Sylar September 15, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Like his 2 homeruns yesterday? Or the 2 run HR on Wednesday? Or the tying single on Tuesday? Or his 2 run HR in the 2nd game on Saturday??

This blog is filled with turncoats

BigPelf4prez September 15, 2008 at 10:30 pm

THIS FRANCHISE HAS STABBED US IN THE BACK FOR 2 YEARS NOW AND YOU TELL ME I SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF MYSELF?? THEY QUIT LAST YEAR AND LOOK LIKE THEY ARE ROLLING OVER AGAIN THIS YEAR!!

Lets_Go_Mets September 15, 2008 at 10:35 pm

That’s what you told me last night when I said after 20 years, I think rooting for this team is not worth it.

metsguppy September 15, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Wright sucks in the clutch. He got two 1 run home runs in a game that the Mets lost. It doesn’t matter. When the game is on the line and the bases are loaded I would rather have Brian Schneider up right now than David Wright.

patrick September 16, 2008 at 6:03 am

nothing like those Clutch 1st inning homers.
