In a post to his blog for Newsday, David Lennon offers observations on a variety of topics, from Pedro Martinez to John Maine, while adding the following about Jerry Manuel, and whether he could win the NL Manager of the Year award:
“If the Mets somehow hold on and make the playoffs, Manuel has a better chance of winning that award than Carlos Delgado has of getting the MVP. Watching Manuel trying to win the division with this bullpen makes David Blaine’s stunts look mundane by comparison. Hang upside down over Central Park? Big
deal. See if Blaine can get three outs with Duaner Sanchez or Aaron Heilman.”
…if manuel wins it, i wonder if Willie Randolph will be on hand to present the trophy…
By the way, Lennon says Manuel will not consider using Daniel Murphy at second base, in fact he laughed at the suggestion.

deal. See if Blaine can get three outs with
And if the Mets don’t make the playoffs, he’s out of a job
i wouldn’t be so sure…
willie should have been fired last year after the debacle…if it happens again is it the same thing…i just don’t know.
if we fail this season, i almost have to blame Omar more than Jerry.
Manager of the year? Go crap in your hat.
joe girardi should be their to present it.
Just what we need, bull-headed thinking at a time of crisis.
lol although i am egar to hear ceetars response to this i would say he has turned the season around but i would not say he is THAT much different from wille. Based on getting the team back into first from being so far out of 1st is an accomplishment and im sure manuel and maddon will battle it out for manager of the year
They only give one away for all of MLB? If so, it’s Maddon’s award, no doubt at all.
Maddon is AL, Manuel is NL. They won’t battle each other.
its not one overall mlb manager of the year?? i always thought it was…(dont really care for these things)
No, there are two awards, one for each league.
I think Manuel has done a fine job, but much like the MVP race, it will come down to what he does tonight with this team, tomorrow, and the next 11 days after that. If David Wright hits .400 with 6 HR and big clutch hits, he will be the sudden favorite. If Ryan Braun does it for Milwaukee, or Ryan Howard even for the Phils — it could be anyone’s award.
Manuel takes this Mets team back from this little skid before it becomes a full force losing streak, and keeps them confident and rolling into the postseason — he has a good chance too.
DWright has the all around numbers that the voters like (BA, HR, RBI), so if he heats up and the Mets win the division, he has a very good shot.
“By the way, Lennon says Manuel will not consider using Daniel Murphy at second base, in fact he laughed at the suggestion.”
Ironically, everyone else laughed at the alternatives.
Yeah, Castillo looked terrible turning that DP in the first and getting on base twice last night. What a joke!
Yay, a good game!
Sorry, but you don’t put Murphy at 2B right now. Totally agree with Jerry on this one. This club needs to play airtight defense right now and can’t afford to be giving away runs by putting someone at 2B who has played 5 minor league games there.
No MVP or Manager of the Year if we don’t make the playoffs. With that said Manuel will be back.
Youth is what turned this team around. Murphy should be in the line-up everyday. Its the veterans that chocked last season and will most likely choke again this year.
But it was not Tatis or Church that choked it away last season and that is who the youth would be replacing.
No Murphy at 2B right now. It’s easy to say “I don’t care how bad his defense is.” It’s much harder to live up to that if the guy just can’t field. I like playing him at 2B in fall league.
And more Murphy in the lineup is great, but we keep facing lefties.
Gotta play Tatis against the lefties. Now you’re choosing between Evans, Murphy, and Church.
I think I like Murphy more than Evans, even against lefties. As to Church… I like the guy a lot, but he’s been cold.
small sample size….but here it is anyway…
Murphy:
vs lefties: .571 (10 PA)
vs righties: .341 (95 PA)
Why do you have to play Tatis vs lefties but Schneider, who can’t hit righties, gets to play over a better hitter last night.
I am not sure that Castro was ready for fulltime duty last night.
Matt where’s the Jerry Manuel Manager of the year magic number counter??
(couldn’t help myself)
He’s got to put up a poll first, then ignore the results of them.
(couldn’t resist either!!) ;)
I wrote yesterday that I thought it was worth considering putting Murphy at second, but after watching Castillo turn that dp in the first, I am not so sure. Second base is not the most critical defensive position, but you can’t have a complete neophyte fielding the position during the pennant race.
You know, I’ve now come around to A. Reyes at 2nd. Not because of his skill, but what I think it does for Jose. Easley is obviously the best choice right now, but I really think Jose likes playing with the young guy he’s taken under his wing. I think the level or responsibility and leadership goes up when he’s the “senior guy” and the little brother/big brother relationship they’ve developed seems to bring out the best in Jose.
Castillo seems to have a bad relationship with Jose, and we need Jose to step it up. If that means taking an offensive hit at the bottom of the order to help Jose get back in a zone, so be it.
So my vote for the next week is Reyes-Reyes
Who cares about these awards??!! Its about winning!!
I would like for someone on the Mets to have a WS MVP. That one usually matters.
If this team continues to play like september sissies, I don’t want Jerry back next season. The Phillies understand pennant race baseball and have no problems playing well when it matters most. The phillies play with reckless abandon and continue to show us Mets fans what we so desperately desire. The mets need AGGRESSION. They need to be angry and play hard.
Swagger means nothing when your face to face with an enemy. Nothing…..
Its time these guys stop the practical jokes and hazing rituals and grow a pair.
