Two bum knees surgically repaired at his age does not bold well for his future as an averyday, major league 2nd baseman.

4JoeOrsulak above explained it well regarding Castillo's deminished abilities. When he was healthy, a huge part of his game was 'Slapping" the ball around the infield and consistantly beating out infield hits with his straight-line speed down to first. That was a major reason for his high OBP. He has just about TOTALLY lost that capability along with a glaring loss of range on defense. He is no longer even in the top 20 in baseball as far as 2nd baseman go at $24Million.

I have a close friend who's had the same type of Knee injury and surgeries as Castillo and he tells me there is no way Castillo can EVER be the same player again. And my buddy only had problems with ONE knee, not TWO like Castillo.

We basically signed "Damaged Goods" for 4-years with no realistic expectations that castillo will EVER be the same Castillo of Old. A decision will soon have to be made on his future with the Mets because due to his health he will NEVER again be an everyday player and this team needs someone more reliable, productive and stable at 2nd.

They had Wagner and Maine for most of those games, I believe, though I might be mistaken.

Look, I love Argenis Reyes. I think he is a highly valuable player as a utility infielder/defensive replacement. I would play him after the 7th inning with a lead every game. I would spot start him. He might be better than Luis Castillo if his .277 OBP turns out to be a fluke.

But he is not, in the long run, a major league hitter. You can get lucky with him for a while. In the long run, he will kill you offensively in that position.

Come now, be fair. He is still better at playing baseball than you or I will ever be at doing anything. Even when he's 50, he will be better at baseball than you or I will be at anything.

He. is. a. bad. fielder.

His RZR is .776. It is the worst among starting 2b in the NL.

He. is. terrible.

He will continue to rapidly decline. This is what happens when players whose value relies in large part upon their speed get older--particularly when they get injured.

Throughout his career, he has pretty consistently shown an IsoD of about .070. This means that his .250/.350 line this year (IsoD)is an anomaly. If his average stays around .250, his OBP will settle at around .320.

An IsoD of .070 with zero power is okay if you can hit near .300 consistently. But much of Castillo's .300 was drag bunts and beating out slow ground balls. As he has lost almost all of his ability to do this, his average will drop to about the .250-.275 realm for the rest of his viable career.
This translates into an OBP of .325-.345.

This will make Castillo a bad fielder who puts up a line of:
.260/.330/.320 and who can only play 100 games a year maximum. This is a useless player.

Castillo is probably what we're stuck with now. Argenis Reyes is a no-hit utility infielder/defensive replacement, and he might not even be able to hit enough to fill that role consistently. Murphy is a possible solution for next year, but in this tight a race, the risk of inept (as opposed to merely very poor) play at 2nd is too great. We have to find an alternative as soon as we can.

Louie Mush!!!

I hate him. Eat the freaking contract and either a) see what you've got with Murphy in the Arizona Fall League or b) sign O-Dog.

Will somebody alert Jerry Manuel to those won-loss numbers. Jeez, I thought he was in tune with the team. This is Willie redux, sticking with the veteran.
