postGame: Nationals 1 Mets 0

September 16, 2008 at 22:17 pm · 227 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets (83–67) lost to the Nationals (57–94) by the score of 1 to 0 in Washington, D.C., tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., click here.

Tonight, against Odalis Perez, the Mets collected four hits and could not score a run.  I wonder where Perez hides all of his Cy Young awards?  I mean, with the way the Mets made him look tonight, he must have a closet full of trophies.  Oh, he doesn’t.  Imagine that.

Fact is, David Wright, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado are a combined 1 for 23 so far in this series with the Nationals – so it should not be much of a surprise that the team’s offense is apparently ice cold.

What concerns me is that they are all swinging at balls so far out of the strike zone, and they’re obviously being over aggressive.  They are far from patient.  It looks like they’re pressing.  In the ninth, David Wright struck out swinging and it looked like he was trying to hit a five-run home run.

In the sixth, with runners on first and second and two outs, Wright hit a fly ball to left field that was reeled in by Willie Harris, who, again, made an acrobatic reach to end the inning.  Wright grabbed his helmet, slammed it to the ground with two hands and yelled, ‘Damnit.’  Actually, I said the exact same thing.

Ramon Martinez made a base-running mistake during a potential rally in the eighth, started by back-to-back hits from back-up catchers, but I am not sure he would have scored on Jose Reyes’s fielder’s choice anyway.

That said, Mike Pelfrey was outstanding tonight, rebounding nicely from his previous start.  Basically, he made one mistake.  That’s it.  Otherwise, he, the team’s defense and Joe Smith all did their job’s tonight.  The offense did not.

The Mets continue their four-game series with the Nationals tomorrow at 7 pm, with Brandon Knight (0-0, 6.43 ERA) taking on Shairon Martis (0-2, 2.70 ERA).

i blame the entire team

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Yeah one of the big 3 have to go. This Wright/ Reyes combo isn’t working out anymore. Reyes can’t take the pressure, Wright is struggling to. Beltran has also been a disappointment we can easily trade any of those guys along with Heilman for Holliday . Id say dump Reyes and sign Furcal. Something along those lines. But Reyes has been pathetic in september 2 years in a row

OrangeNblue September 16, 2008 at 10:48 pm

Reyes can’t take the pressure? Your man David Wright is Mr. Choke…he’s struck out with the bases loaded, with so many ducks on the pawn, with people on 3rd with only 1 out. He’s pressing so badly now that he can’t even hit lefties!!! My God! Its just painful to watch him fail time and again with people on base and when it matters most and you want to blame Reyes? Reyes hasn’t hit and so haven’t Wright, Delgado, and Beltran in this series. Blame the kid who can’t speak English I guess.

Steve in DC September 16, 2008 at 10:51 pm

Seconded.

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Well one of em’ has to go either one. I don’t really care, but Wright had a good September last season unlike Reyes.

DoubleRR07 September 17, 2008 at 2:10 am

I put all the blame on the bullpen and the relief pitching for this mess. They’ve blown 22 games this year. 22 games my friend thats alot. The most in the majors to be exact and when your first in the majors in that type of category your name is the Nationals or one of those teams and we’re in the mix for the playoffs only because of the guys youre saying to trade. We need to negotiate away our farm system and keep Murphy and get a closer like Trevor Hoffman and some bullpen help. That’s what I think.

MznMts86 September 16, 2008 at 10:19 pm

i honestly can’t believe this is happening again. tomorrow’s start will be just like humber’s last year versus the nats. another horrendous loss for a team that can get out of its own way down the stretch. weren’t philly fans admitting defeat a week ago?

this is pathetic. i actually thought, when we were in the can back in the early part of the season: “well, at least we can’t blow it again in september.”

this team should be ashamed of itself.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:20 pm

All I can say is…………………………….LOL

I mean, what else is there to say? I mean really. Not even the best Hollywood Director/Producer can make this Sh………t up.

1985Mets September 16, 2008 at 10:48 pm

briliant… you should win an award

therealsince86 September 16, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Agreed.

stone11375 September 16, 2008 at 10:20 pm

please, this was obviously pelf’s fault for not hitting a 6 run homerun

god, is he ever gonna earn that first round pick?

metsfan42793 September 16, 2008 at 10:20 pm

This team is a disgrace. We had a 3 and half game lead 4 days ago and now by the end of the night we will be in second place. There is no hope for this team right now.

npanzeca September 16, 2008 at 10:28 pm

All it takes is 1 win to get things going.

1985Mets September 16, 2008 at 10:49 pm

It just took 1 game for the mets NOT to make the playoffs last year….

patrick September 16, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Wright has some clutch damnits.

Bottomline, this team needs to be blown up, top to bottom.

egnirc September 16, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Right now signing anyone off the Phillies bench that is available next year seems to be attractive. They at least know how to play in September, October maybe not but September they don’t lay down.

npanzeca September 16, 2008 at 10:27 pm

Yep, they played well in October last year when they got swept in the NLDS

MetsFan4Decades September 16, 2008 at 10:38 pm

HAHAHAHAHA – Good one. And happens to be true.

SteamboatWilly September 16, 2008 at 10:21 pm

It’s nice to know that at least one team in the division knows how to fight for the crown….cue the Phillies. Maybe the Mets can take a page from their book and learn how to come back in a game? The Nats had 55 wins doming into this series and so far have been dominant. It’s the Curse of the “17″, should have never given Mex’s number to the likes of Koo and Lima, it should be hanging on the outfield wall where it belongs!

berms24 September 16, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Dont put it up anymore, now were on the other side of anothers team magic number. Has last year taught you nothing. You run a good site, but dont be the jinx of the mets.

egnirc September 16, 2008 at 10:32 pm

It’s looking like last year has taught us that this team are losers and has nothing to do with with “jinxes” they just can not flat out play with the top dogs, I mean last place teams, in September.

Can’t handle the Marlins or Nats looks like no chance in hell against any real playoff team.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:23 pm

4-games up in the loss colum with 17 to play definitely qualifies as a collapse and a choke.

2008 Mets……………………..shake hands with the 2007 Mets.

npanzeca September 16, 2008 at 10:26 pm

It qualifies as a slump, it happens, learn some baseball before posting something so stupid.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Firts of all, it’s been said by about 5 or 6 different sports casters that know more about baseball than you’llm ver know in your lifetime. It has also been said by many posters on here who I respect and know plenty about the game of baseball. Take your self righteous opinions and keep them to yourself.

npanzeca September 16, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Right, you mean sports casters who never played a game in their lives? The same ones who are licking their chops so they can put down and make fun of the Mets? They know possibly less than you.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm

OK, you are obviously clueless so this is the last time I will respond to your idiotic comments. By the way, I play college (Tulsa) and semi pro ball and been a Mets fan since 1968 (probably longer than you’ve been alive.) 4-games u[p in the loss column with 17 to play, while it’s not a huge collapse l;ike last year, still qualifies as a colapse and a choke in any mormal person’s mind. Besides yours of course. Last communication to you sir.

npanzeca September 16, 2008 at 10:48 pm

Sorry pal but I’ve been a fan since 1964 (first game at Shea). You are reading and listening too much to all the idiots who can’t wait to use the C word so they can laugh at us. Losses happen, it doesn’t make it what you or so many others want to call it. You call it that because you are probably like so many others who can’t wait for it to happen.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Not really npanzeca, just been pre-conditioned to think that way since last year. You have to admit that it has the same feel as it did last year? You cannot possibly be too optimistic about this team going by their track record. Yes, anything can happen and I really hope I’m wrong about them and they are able to turn this around and quickly, but until they prove they can actually win something, I will be expressing my disapproval. I’m a die hard just like you and will never change my blue & orange colors, but I’m not a “Homer” and will call it as I see it. That said…………………LETS GO METS!!! LOL

npanzeca September 16, 2008 at 11:26 pm

Trust me, I am normally the most negative fan out there but I’m tired of all the newspaper and sportscasters who keep callin this a collapse, like its the same as last year, and they can’t wait to talk about it and laugh at our team and fans. Well, F them, its not the same in my mind. We played badly until the Willie firing, then played better. We had a lead and now we don’t, it happens. Now we will rebound and win the East.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 11:52 pm

Well, you should now by now not to pay too much attention to the media. They always have an agenda, same as in politics. You are right, it seems like they just can’t wait for the mets to screw up again. They need to sell papers and sensationalize everything especially regarding the Mets. Maybe it’s poetic mjustice and meant to be. Maybe this year the Mets will be the ones to take the division away from the Phillies on the last day of the season? wouldn’t that be something. Simply poetic.

Tidewater September 16, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Matt:

You wear a helmet while watching the game????

Matthew Cerrone September 16, 2008 at 10:31 pm

I SAID the exact same thing. Not DID the exact same thing.

Although, if the team keeps playing like this, I may need to wear a helmet.

It’ll be safer that way.

DjDeF September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm

I tend to carry around plush mets balls. It lets the aggression out and won’t break my flat screen

1985Mets September 16, 2008 at 10:50 pm

HEY MAT whats the Magic number again..lol

patrick September 16, 2008 at 10:52 pm

put up the Phillies magic number PLEASE, I mean can it hurt?

1985Mets September 16, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Thats the smartest thing i have heard in the past three day…. I TOTALLY AGREE.

Tidewater September 16, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. Sorry.

patrick September 16, 2008 at 10:25 pm

lets get up that Wild Card Magic number.

DjDeF September 16, 2008 at 10:27 pm

not so fast Brewers on their way back

skylog September 16, 2008 at 10:27 pm

that way at least as it goes down quickly from the other end we will all at least think something good is happening

ccmetfan September 16, 2008 at 10:27 pm

Tomorows a new start. Mets will probably be in second place but now will have to fight for the division and the wild card. Who knows, maybe they’ll go on a winning streak. At least Evans and Murphy will again be playing again which is what many fans want.

patrick September 16, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Yeah, I am sure it will be rocking with Brandon Knight on the hill. Catch the Energy.

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:28 pm

This ones 100% on the offense. Pelfrey pitched a great game, the offense couldn’t get it done!

npanzeca September 16, 2008 at 10:29 pm

You people with the offense drive me nuts. We are near the top in runs scored. You can’t score a ton of runs every day over the course of a 162 game season.

SantanaCYYOung September 16, 2008 at 10:32 pm

r u serious? so you can’t expect 1 run against a journeyman pitcher?

npanzeca September 16, 2008 at 10:33 pm

It happens to everyone over the course of a season. You understand that other teams pitch and put players in the field also right?

SantanaCYYOung September 16, 2008 at 10:36 pm

it happens, but its happening every game lately with this team. and you also realize that the other team put out a last place team out there the last two nights right?

skylog September 16, 2008 at 10:38 pm

more or less two in a row, against below average pitching? i am sorry, that is horrid. sadly, though, it could even be all overlooked if they could only manage to drive someone in when they are there in scoring position in a key spot.

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm

I just said this game is on the offense. Not the whole season. The bullpen is the biggest problem. But they were awfut today all they needed was 2 runs against a team they crushed last week with their bats.

enoughisenough September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm

wow man. you really just don’t have a clue.

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:42 pm

how do I not have a clue. Who else is to blame other than the offense and the baserunning? Pelfrey pitched great.

egnirc September 16, 2008 at 10:40 pm

So if the pitching does well and keeps the team in the game for 9 straight innings against a last place team we should not expect anything from the offense?

Are you the counselor of the team? That seems to be their attitude that they can’t be bothered to get more than 4 hits in a 1-0 game in September against Odalis Perez because they scored 10 runs in a game a few weeks ago.

They are near the top in runs scored because they score early and then can’t be bothered to score anything beyond the 4th inning, or in the case of this game since batting practice.

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:43 pm

so basically they’re not good.

kd bart September 16, 2008 at 10:28 pm

It’s obvious they’re pressing at the plate. You could see that in the first inning of Monday’s game. Chasing bad pitches all over the place.

garfios September 16, 2008 at 10:29 pm

They should retire # 17, that will easy the curse, a least a little bit.

zen September 16, 2008 at 10:29 pm

2 -run hr howard as he is the third straight philly to win the mvp

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:30 pm

LOL!!! The more I hear them say in post game interview “that we are not thinking about last year” the more it proves that they are!!! LOL. I mean COME ON!!!! at least be honest and real with your fans. Don’t lie straight to our face. Grow some Ba….lls and admit it’s on your mind. Do they really think we’re a bunch of idiots or what?

moogman September 16, 2008 at 10:49 pm

I love Burkhart’s “…this year’s team is different from last year’s….”

Its like watching a politician….

SantanaCYYOung September 16, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Matt, i love you man, but the post game comments needed some more fire.

this was a MUST win and they lost, the team is pressing yes, but why? this team has players that fold when all the chips are in.

this team is done, say it! i know you believe it

garfios September 16, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Church looks overwhelmed at the plate, he should sit for awhile.

kd bart September 16, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Stop with this curse and magic number crap. It all comes down to lack of performance between the lines.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Exactly.

therealsince86 September 16, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Agreed. It’s not one player or one manager’s decision or a friggin jinx. It’s the team and the fans that can’t get over last season. I really don’t know how they will get past it. We need that 7-2 comeback or something. Maybe if we get down a couple of games and then come back and win? I have no idea anymore.

MetsFan4Decades September 16, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Don’t think there’s anymore that can be said. Sigh….

On that note, just so you all know I’m delusional – I’m still not giving up on this team, on the division win.

skylog September 16, 2008 at 10:32 pm

garfios September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Now the Phills had they automatic on the mound.

SantanaCYYOung September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm

so much for coming back after tough losses

washtiger September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Totally speechless. Can this really be happening two years in a row? Is there a precedent for this? Inexcusable to lose these games to one of the worst teams in baseball, while making their mediocre pitchers look like Cy Young.

Maybe falling into second place takes some of the pressure off, and they start to play better. They’re so tightly wound at the plate right now — other than last Sept., I can’t recall so many horrible at bats. How do these guys get themselves to relax at the plate?

Can they somehow stop the bleeding and right the ship?

JoseJoseJoseJosee September 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Did they remove that post about thedirty.com. Interesting stuff on there about Reyes and Wright. Someone posted it in this thread but it got taken down.

DjDeF September 16, 2008 at 10:40 pm

mookie September 16, 2008 at 10:36 pm

I don’t even think that run was Pelfreys fault. Tatis should have never dived for the ball, and because Tatis got injured it hurt Pelfry’s rythem. It’s a shame about Tatis.

metsforever September 16, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Can we post a quick Brandon Knight confidence poll? I’m sure the kiil aid drinkers here will give it a solid 10.

They’d be in 4th place with Willie in the dugout, brooding and making ill decisions.

therealsince86 September 16, 2008 at 11:09 pm

I don’t really get these type of comments. Why would Willie, who does not have a job, be happy when both teams he cares about stink?

losmets5 September 16, 2008 at 10:39 pm

It’s coming. It’s lurking. It won’t go away.

losmets5 September 16, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Me too. Not so much him a his saves percentage.

losmets5 September 16, 2008 at 10:40 pm

I think it’s painfully obvious that God is a Phillies fan. Atleast for the past 2 years.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Lets keep God out of this. They are not losing because of some freak plays or miracles, they are losing simply for the fact that they are playing tight and choking once again. What made you think that a team can re0-invent their charactor from one year to the next?

MetsFan4Decades September 16, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Uh, 1968 Mets, 1969 Mets.

Anything is possible. You cannot predict the game of baseball. Did you see the Vegas oddst o win the WS before the season? They had Boston first to repeat, Tigers second, Yankees third and Mets fourth. Just goes to prove you can’t play baseball on paper….

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 10:49 pm

That’s so true MetsFan4Decades. Do you remember the vegas odds last week when the mets were 4 games up in the loss column? They had the mets winning the division at 90+% and the Phillies @ something like 9+% as I recall. LOL.. Like to see what those odds say today?

MetsFan4Decades September 16, 2008 at 10:52 pm

hahaha – I didn’t see them last week. I’ll bet there is a radical change by tonight though.

I’m here buddy. You’re right! LOL. 12 games left though buddy. You have the upper hand now. It’s going to be a wild ride. I hope the Mets can at least keep it close and give you guys a run for your money. Like I said last week. You guys are still the NL East Champions and until my team proves other wise, that’s the way it will remain. Good luck. NOT!! LOL

ccmetfan September 16, 2008 at 10:56 pm

anyone see Wright’s post game comments on sny? At least he’s thinking positive and how much fun these last 12 games will be.

It would be nice to have a team that actually cared in September.
It would be nice to have a team that actually could get timely hits in September.
12 games left to prove me wrong.
Marlins heading back into it with 6 straight. Will we be in 3rd place by the end of the season?

WrightsRight September 16, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Wright seems excessively enthusiastice and confident. Either he truly is, or he’s just in a great mood because he’s heading out to meet the Dirty.com chicks with Jose.

I seriously wonder if the Fills will lose any more games this season. They seem to be locked in.

Oh yeah, I had quit Metsblog. . . . Oh well. I’m as resilient as the Mets.

metsfanmurph September 16, 2008 at 11:01 pm

The worst part is that the Phillies are not a good team at all. At least the Brewers are the only team in baseball with a worse bullpen than us, so we have a shot.

kd bart September 16, 2008 at 11:01 pm

I take solace in the fact that teams can turn it on just like that. Take the Dodgers. They were awful a month ago including losing 8 in a row where their offense went into hibernation. Look at them now. Winner of 14 of 16 and up by 5 in the division. I believe they were 4 1/2 down at one point.

MetfaninFL September 16, 2008 at 11:02 pm

I usually am pretty optimistic about the Mets but these last few days have really killed my enthusiasm. The only way this team is going to make the playoffs is by backing in with Astro/Brewer slump. Which is not looking out of the question and I just want to be in the playoffs. The Offense has to pick it up these next few days. I hope the insertion of Murphy will help the offense like Berroa has helped LA. The bottom line is we are first place in the Wild Card and 2nd in the division (If Cubs hold on). Its not going to be impossible to overcome this but its going to be tough. I’m not giving up but we are either going to need a big offensive night or a huge start from Knight. This has nothing to do with jinxes, magic numbers or the number 17. It has to do with an offense that can’t find itself. That being said, I hope things turn around and Lets Go Mets.

fil.e September 16, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Like you haven’t had your own anxiety with the Phillies? You’re not a big enough man to speak about your moments of crying when Flash Gordon or J.C. Romero were in the 8th. Chris Coste sure didn’t like hearing it. These Phillies are not ”for real.” Trust me. Who ever is in 1st seems to be destined to be taken over by the other.

Isn’t a perfect story writing for the Mets to come back? Now with the doubts going in their favor? Do you realize how much more it’s going to hurt now if the Phillies don’t win the NL East or win the division? Do you realize how much better it’ll be for us. Maybe you guy’s are the ”favorites.” Maybe we’re just the underdogs. And maybe we like it that way. We’ll see who’s where 12 days from now.

Philly Fan on Wall St. September 16, 2008 at 11:07 pm

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Relax. Tatis deserves credit. Without him, the Mets would have holes. He’s still a candidate for comeback player of the year. It’s a big loss on the Mets. Maybe not with the way he’s played lately though. It’s upsetting because it’s likely to be his last game of his career.

I’m suprise Damion doesn’t have more fight. For a guy that’s never been in the playoffs who’d love to be there, he can’t play through his injury? Maybe it is that bad. I don’t know.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:37 pm

Tatis deserves respect because he gave it all he got. This Mets team has faded as a collective team in these last 5 games. It’s not over little Phillies fan. Long from it. It’s going to be a rowdy 12 days. I hope you’re ready. I’d love to see both of us get in just so we can see who’s the real team.

MrDudeAndStuff September 16, 2008 at 11:18 pm

I’ve posted on here several times over the past couple weeks and I still stick by it. I believe that the Mets will be in the playoffs along with the Phils. Houston and the Brew Crew are sliding which really makes the Wildcare much more for either of our team’s takings.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 11:22 pm

I hope you’re right. I’m seriously starting to have some doubt about the Mets though. You guys already proved last year you have what it takes to make it down t5he stretch, the mets on the other hand have proven the opposite.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:34 pm

As long as we can play .500 that is. The playoffs is another element. The type of element the Mets thrive in. The type Ollie loves. I want competition. I wish the Cubs were here right now.

toomanyuniforms September 16, 2008 at 11:17 pm

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:33 pm

You’re right. People don’t really how many times this has happened. To believe the Mets are done is absurd.

What about Victor Martinez walking off and sliding into the plate? lol

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Why won’t posts go through on this site? I swear.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:25 pm

It’s probable the Brewers and Mets won’t play .500 the rest of the way and there’s still a large enough margin on the Astros, Marlins and Cards to get either one of them in. The Mets may sadly be able to get in with like 5 wins.

methead September 16, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Isnt it time these players man up? Santana tomorrow on short rest. They just wont do it.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Yes it is. But that may not be a good thing. Johan being scheduled to throw Thursday allows him to pitch Tuesday and than the final game of the season Sunday. Pedro’s been getting squeezed in there a lot. Would you really like to see Pedro throw on the last day of the season?

egnirc September 16, 2008 at 11:52 pm

I’d expect Pedro on last day would throw a worse game than Glavine to close up Shea.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:28 pm

The way I see it – the Mets are no where in the same neighborhood as Philly right now. They can’t compete with them. The Phillies won 5 in a row and the Mets lost 4 of 5. The Wild Card will eventually become the more realistic possibility. .500 can probably take us there. If they win 6 of their final 12, it’s hard to predict the Brew Crew winning 6, and the Astros winning 9 of 12 can happen. But it’s not likely. And Florida or St. Louis winning 11? I don’t think so.

The reason why I’m giving this more thought is because if the Phillies do get in the playoffs – we have the opportunity for revenge. Even if the Phillies win the division, what would taste better? Winning the division. Or winning a potential NLCS in Philly? People won’t remember who won the division than. I know last licks is something the Mets need, but we all know the Mets live up higher at Citizens Bank Park.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:30 pm

I’m just looking for any chance. Any reason for the media to not deem this a ”collapse.” If we win the wild card, it may be somewhat disappointing but it’s in no way a collapse. Just look at 2000. Who cares that we won the Wild Card that year? Who cares the Fish did in 97′ or 03′?

methead September 16, 2008 at 11:32 pm

I dont think the phillies are better. Take away the 2 blown saves this weekend and we talking a different story today.

What I will say is that the phillies are built differently in that they bunch hits togther to score runs which is a better formula to score runs late in the game. The mets on the other hand dont bunch hits together as much and usually get the 1 big hit (HR, 2 run double, etc).

Burn_Philly_Down September 16, 2008 at 11:34 pm

Second try on this post-

Ok ive been waiting all year to post and this is an ideal time. First let me start off by saying i’m a die hard mets fan, given im only seventeen i’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs for my amazinz’. My dad grew up during some of the hardest times to be a mets fan an for some reason i continued to support them and made them the team that i would put my heart into for the rest of my life. After being at Shea Sept. 30th last year it was one of the most horrible things i’ve seen as a sports fan to any team since i’ve been alive. As a child i could always hear my dad saying “ya gotta believe” down by 4 in the ninth inning. That to me is a true mets fan. Don’t get me wrong i love all mets fans and i am damn proud to be one, its just so sad after last year when things go bad in September everyone goes into collapse mode. I know it hurts to go to bed and just think about how you spent your summer glued to your tv, or in the uppers section 20, row u, seat 12, and to see your team collapse. Like I said it hurts to watch this rear its head again, but lets get real were mets fans. hate them or love them their our team, and i can promise i wont give up on them till’ its over. Lets wake up during the hard times and have faith, thats what were all about. Tug is looking down on us and shaking his head right now guys and girls. YA GOTTA BELIEVE!!!!

LL September 16, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Why does this hurt so bad? I need some serious help.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:53 pm

Because of the intensity lol We’re not lazy fans. We know all of what goes on. And it hurts. It’s not going to stop hurting… Until they start winning. Than it will turn into stress and anxiety. It’s going down to the wire. I know I’ll be calling out that Sunday for work the last day… Screw Home Depot lol I was planning on saving that day for a football day, but I won’t care about football that day if the game counts

effectivelywild September 16, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Excellent post! This is a franchise whose history is built upon doing the unthinkable and sometimes the impossible.

LL September 16, 2008 at 11:47 pm

What do you know about Tug? You’re only 17. You really haven’t suffered as much. But I like your devotion kid. Remember, it will be like this for the rest of your life. I don’t know why, but it will. And maybe, just maybe, you might get a little taste of greatness. Like 1986 for me, or 1969 for others. Here’s to you and “you gotta believe!”

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Yup. Great post. We do have to believe. This is our team. And I’m proud it’s my team. I’m 19. I try to remember as far back as I can. I remember watching Met games since I was like 8. Even remembering some of the games and the line ups. When you’re born in 89′ and you can remember Matt Franco on a summer day in 99′ hitting a full count bases loaded two out in the bottom of the 9th losing by one run to win the game by one run – you’re a Mets fan.

I believe in this team. What happened to us last year was weird. We didn’t know it would happen. Sure we thought it could, but we never experienced it. I was at the rain out make up against the Cardinals on the 27th. It was one of the worse days of my life. A 2 hour drive. I don’t even think the weather was nice that day. The Mets couldn’t even score a run. You have to remember the bad and good to be a real fan.

When the Mets clinch and win this division, people don’t know what that joy will be…

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:51 pm

Off Mariano Rivera against the Yankees… If it weren’t for it being against them, I probably wouldn’t remember lol I remember Rey Ordonez jumping over the railing

Two-By-Four September 17, 2008 at 12:28 am

I don’t know how to tell you this but Tug pitched the last 10 years of his career in Philadelphia.

LL September 16, 2008 at 11:38 pm

Baseball is a game of streaks. We’re going through ours right now. Better to give up the lead in the division today than on the last day…like last year. Hopefully we’ll come through. The Sillies can’t keep winning forever. The tide will change.

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 11:43 pm

I like your take on that. You’re right, last year we lost it on the last day of the season, maybe this year is our turn to knock the Phillies out on the last day. Wouldn’t that be sweet?

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:44 pm

If that does happen… We should have a parade lol

X-Man September 16, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Hey, why not? Never a bad time to have a parade. I’ll be there!

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:44 pm

I couldn’t agree more. If there’s a time to be cold, it’s now. When was the last time the Mets went dead for like 2 1/2 – 3 weeks? Last season. Our manager ain’t Willie. We’ll do it.

There’s no off days to screw with us like the All-Star break. It’s ours for the taking. And the Wild Card is there too.

The more we think about the division, the better chance we have at the Wild Card. Think of it like a C student studying for a Math test. He wants the A. He studies with all his might. But may end up with a B even though he still has a shot at the A. That could be the Mets.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:41 pm

I think it’s pretty ridiculous for anyone to believe Matt posting the magic number is even capable of being a jinx. Like the Mets players heard about it? lol The number 17 though? Try the whole media. They’ve heard of it themselves. They know about it.

That is a legit jinx if jinxes exist.

nyj0126 September 16, 2008 at 11:57 pm

I said it yesterday and I don’t know why I still say it… I’m fighting myself back not to take it back. The Mets are in the playoffs. It’s like seeing through a wall taller than Hurricane Ike… Don’t know how, don’t know why… But we’re there. We’re in.

HeadlinerG60 September 17, 2008 at 12:53 am

The Mets are in the same position as the Red Sox. Are Sox fans going nuts?

nyj0126 September 17, 2008 at 1:15 am

Because the BoSox won 2 out of last 4 World Series, the Celtics just won it and the Pats have given them several in this decade. How greedy can one city get? lol What do they care if they win? They were proud enough to trade Manny… They actually went principle over winning this year.

nyj0126 September 17, 2008 at 1:16 am

I don’t think we’re at the bubbling point yet… If it happens, it happens. What can we do? We got lots of time in October to complain, right? I say win the division if you can. If you can’t, win the wild card. It’ll still give us a shot to win the WS, get revenge on the Phillies and prevent the media from making a mockery of the Mets again…

thecoup September 17, 2008 at 1:27 am

Uh, are you guys fans? The season is not over yet. Find another sport if you’re to weak to handle the ups and downs. Or at least another team.

I thought you hated the bullpen? Wait, the lack of quality starting pitching? No, today you hate the hitters?

The weakest element on the Mets is you — the fans.

Show some faith. Show some support. Show some fanatic enthusiasm.

Let’s go Mets!

be_dot September 17, 2008 at 9:09 am

While the team played poorly, I’m still going to rip Martinez. He was brought in the game simply to pinch run. While he probably would not have scored on Reyes’ fielders choice, it’s a totally different at bat with him on 3rd. A flyball would have plated the tying run instead of a basehit.

sheaheykid2 September 17, 2008 at 9:23 am

Ramon Martinez made a base-running mistake during a potential rally in the eighth, started by back-to-back hits from back-up catchers, but I am not sure he would have scored on Jose Reyes’s fielder’s choice anyway.

Understand something with this comment, the approach that Reyes takes at the plate is changed by Martinez not being on third. The beautiful thing about baseball is that each action changes every other action. If a runner gets picked off of third base with nobody out and the next 3 guys strike out, you can’t say well they wouldn’t have gotten him home anyway. Your approach SHOULD change significantly given the circumstances of your at bat.

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:22 pm

wheres Wright in this I only see Reyes, and I’m still not believing this until I see it in the papers.

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:22 pm

what was that for you prick!

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:25 pm

that is a sensible thing to say on my part. Reyes has been god awful you idiot for 2 seasons when games have mattered the most, Colorado will take Reyes anyday for Holliday and a lot of people are saying the big 3 need to be split up. So don’t call me stupid when you have no ideas yourself retard.

Tidewater September 16, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Reproduce if you want, and certainly don’t kill yourself, but what you said was as stupid as stupid gets.

filthyramirez September 16, 2008 at 10:32 pm

god damn. Look even Mike Francesca and Keith Hernandez said if this team collapses again they have to fix up the core meaning split up the big 3. Make a bigtime move. You cannot go down this stretch with these same players next year if they don’t get it done this year it’s that simple. The Mets can sign Furcal or someone trade Reyes for Holliday and they’ll be just fine. Reyes has choked twice in september.
