Read: Big Start for Pelfrey
By Brandon Eddy - Sep 16, 2008 3:12 pm

At ESPN.com, Bob Klapisch believes tonight is the biggest start of Mike Pelfrey’s career and it is up to him ‘to reverse this collapse-in-progress.’

Due to a bullpen who has allowed 14 runs and four home runs in the last five games, Pelfrey is certainly needed to go deep into tonight’s game, according to Klapisch.

In 181.2 innings pitched this season, Pelfrey is 13-9 with a 3.77 ERA.

…i have faith in big pelf tonight…however, as far as the bats are concerned, can we please stop squeezing them into sawdust…

Klapisch also paints the picture of a collapsing Mets team. However, when you’ve spent most of the year in 2nd, 3rd place, and your biggest lead was 3.5 games, and you are 7-5 in the month thus far, can you really justify using the “C” word?

    • XbLaDe31 says:

I really cant agree with anymore. I dont get how the news media can compare the two, and as far the playoffs go i see the mets winning the divison and at worst the wildcard which by the way the wildcard has produced some WS appearances???? Just a thought.

      • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

They were in 4th place after two months, they were 7.5 games back in mid-June, two months of great play got them tied with the Phils, then another four weeks of decent play got them as ahead as 3.5 games, and after losing 3 of 4, with the Phils winning 4, they are lucky to have built that lead because now they are still up.

I do agree this is a big game to avoid this from becoming anything bigger than it really is.

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

If the Mets go 8-5, the Phils AND Brewers would have to BOTH go 9-3 to beat them. A win tonight is huge — all games are huge unless they reel off 7 straight and grab a 4 game lead.

        • janss36 says:

Phils can and will go 9-3… Can we go 8-5? Hope so…

        • Tidewater says:

I agree that using the c word is a bit much since they didn’t have a commanding lead, however, that 3.5 game lead evaporated awfully fast.

It may not be a full-fledged collapse, but it looks a little like a choke job.

What is it with the Mets in September? Remember 98? We almost blew it in 99, too.

          Ugh.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Um, if the Mets finish with a flurry of losses after beginning the month in first place, that’s a choke. Sorry.

    • guigsy says:

Big Pelf? Wow, that is fruity

    • dave27 says:

Exactly….there is a difference between a pennant race and a collapse.

Maybe if Klap can stop crying over his Yankees long enough to show some objectivity….never mind, Klap is a d-bag.

  2. ksuth says:

    Go Big Pelf!

  3. Union Square Dancer says:

Matt clearly does believe in superstition, do a search for “lucky shirt” to read all about it…. I don’t care either way, but clearly he said earlier that it’s the players that win or lose… apparently sometimes it’s his t-shirt too.

  4. Nightlife says:

The man is going to deal tonight.

  5. derxmasta says:

its still a collapse whether its 7 games or 3.5 games
its just a less of a collapse but a collapse non the less!

    • pezao says:

The collapse wasn’t 7 games; it was 3.5 MONTHS. This year it’s a struggle to maintain control after a coup.

  6. swirlywand says:

I can’t WAIT TO SEE BIG PELF ON THE MOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let’s GO Mets!

I totally lost my mets mojo after sitting through that routine last night…but I’m starting to feel the excited butterflies I thought left me!

    • pezao says:

I wish I could go tonight and erase the memories from last night. I almost cried myself to sleep.

LET’S GO BIG PELF!!!!!!! I got faith in ya! Kill them gNats!

      • swirlywand says:

My best friend is just happy I wasnt’ arrested after I started yelling at the top of my lungs that ELIJAH DUKES IS A COMMON CRIMINAL AND THAT THE NATS WERE NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF THUGS…now, I do NOT really believe this…I was just so angry….all the night’s frustrations were just too much to stay inside my lungs….so off to 7-11 I went where I mentione to the police that the real criminal was posing as baseball players across the street…
I know, I was a horrible METS fan last night..so I haver to redeem myself….but I can’t figure out why Nationals fans are so obnoxious…in gneral…

        let’s go mets!

  7. murpheeee says:

he better throw a complete game, I wouldn’t trust that bunch of clowns in the bullpen to close a freakin’ door

  8. “You don’t have to remind the Mets about the ghosts of 2007 …”

Klaptrap is right. No need for anyone else to bring it up because instigators like him are bringing it up at every opportunity.

Klaptrap is licking his chops at the prospect of the Mets not making the postseason so has plenty of fodder to do what he does best — write derogatory, insulting and somewhat exaggerated, if not downright inaccurate, postmortems.

He’s such a bitter, malicious man.

  9. rustysribs says:

It’s really amazing how some of these “spoiler” teams get themselves so pumped for these games. I’d almost rather be playing the Phillies tonight.

    • johnstearns says:

Now there’s an idea — variable scheduling for the last three weeks of the season… pre-playoff playoffs… THAT would bring in some REAL money…

    • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

These spoiler teams really seems to hate the Mets for some reason. They all revel in trying to beat us. I don’t understand why it’s just us. I hope they hate the Phillies the same way lol. Some say it’s becasue the Mets celebrate. That’s b.s. though b/c the Phillies celebrate and run their mouths but no retribution is ever received. On Sunday Julian Tavarez must have flexed 10 times on his way to the dugout after striking out Chrch but we’re the ones who celebrate!

      • The Slider says:

Yes indeed, they DO hate on us and I think it is because of all the dancing and celebrating we do in their faces. We get the other teams all juiced up against us. Remember what we did to Florida in the second to last game of the season last year - and how Florida got all juiced up for that last game? What more do you need to know?

  10. MadChas says:

Time for Big Bird to step up!!!

very concerned about the number of innings pitched for the season. His arm may literally fall off.

  11. tooth667 says:

“At ESPN.com, Bob Klapisch believes tonight is the biggest start of Mike Pelfrey’s career”

Pelfrey started some key games during the pennant race last year, if I recall. A lot closer to the end of the season

  12. 1331 says:

    OFF TOPIC
Any 7 pack holders get postseason tix today. If so, what game and where are the seats?

  13. Flushing_is_Burning says:

    testing??

  14. SantanaCYYOung says:

I have NO confidence in the Mets in these remaining 13 games.

Even if they win today, they have knight tomorrow. If they win Santana’s start, then they have Niese after that (I know he pitched great last time, but can you expect that twice in a row). If they win Perez’s start then they have Pedro after that.

Do you see where I am going with this?

    • 1331 says:

BTW, Omar Infante was the cleanup hitter against Niese so don’t get too crazy about the start.

      • Tidewater says:

Maybe he’ll be the cleanup hitter this whole series with the Phils. Wouldn’t that be great?

      • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

You laugh at Infante being the cleanup hitter, but if we’ve learned anything as Mets fans it’s that crap players can still hurt you. They are still majore leaguers. See Anderson Hernandez, Greg Norton, etc.

    • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

I know Knight starting is scary, but it’s baseball. You never know what’s gonna happen. Maybe the offense carries us. Also, Niese isn’t starting against Atlanta, Ollie is. Niese doesn’t start until the 22nd against the baby bears.

  15. derxmasta says:

if the mets win w/o castillo
then lets hope jerry keeps him off the roster for the remainder of the season

  16. derxmasta says:

i dont know what it is about castillo thats bringing the team down
    maybe its just his attitude.
i prefer a young guy with more fire n desire that goes 0/5 but raises the teams morale
over a guy that goes 1/5 with an infield single if it brings the rest of the team to his level.

    • BigHangWithEm says:

Yes, Castillo is such a weight on the morale of the Mets. You can obviously see the inner workings of the Mets clubhouse through your TV and hear it through your radio.

Do you feel they should have gotten a hustly mcdirty pants like Eckstein to play second? Would that have lifted the Mets collective morale?

    • Tidewater says:

Any time you’d prefer to give up an out, you are being a fool.

      • derxmasta says:

you mean like a sac bunt
        or a sac fly?

        • Tidewater says:

Almost. Bunts make much less sense than many people think, and a sac fly isn’t always by design.

But the example above is neither a sac bunt or sac fly — it’s a desire for an 0-5 over a 1-5. You are far more likely to score a run with the guy with the 1-5 than you are with the 0-5. It’s just myopic to say you’d want 0-5 out of A. Reyes over a 1-5 from Castillo.

        • rantman888 says:

How about one of Castillo’s little slaps to 2nd? Who cares if A. Reyes goes 0-5 or 5-5. If they win, that’s all that matters. Usually I would go for the extra hit, even if it is a 1-5, but it has become obvious that something is going on there with Castillo in the lineup.

I posted this earlier in a different thread:

Record with Castillo in lineup: 37-42

          Without: 46-24

If the Mets win the World Series and Wright doesn’t get a single hit, are we going to complain about him going hitless or be happy that they won?

          Just win baby!

  17. BigHangWithEm says:

I’m sure no one cares, but it was really bugging me and I had to point it out. It’s also non-Mets related and maybe it will help everyone to take their focus OFF the Mets for a few moments.

After the obligatory Big start for Big Pelf and Mets collapse v.2008 nonsense, Klapisch talks about the Rays starters being overworked based on their 2007 workload vs 2008. He even puts up a nice table illustrating his point. Problem is, he fails to add in their 2007 Minor League innings. Once you do that, you find out that their is no significant increase in 2007 innings vs. 2008 innings. Just more lazy a** sports journalism. Why does anyone even read these clowns anymore??

    Let’s go Mets!!!!

    • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

I totally agree with you. By the way, ESPN is declaring us dead. So, that should make us all feel better because they are never right about anything. How can yoube when John Kruk and Steve Phillips are considered your top baseball analysts?

  18. danlx13 says:

phhhuck the phiillieeess they aiiint makin it this yrr…pelf is gunna dominate tonight…hes gunna pitch 7.2 innings and is gunna get ejected for hitting dukes…and dukes will et ejected because es gunna charge the mound and there is gunna be a bench clearing brawl…………………. kinda like last yr when we collapsed we had a brawl with the marlins in the 2nd to last game of the yr…….ahhh memories

  19. mets2010 says:

    heres tonight’s lineup
    J. Reyes (ss)
    Church (rf)
    Wright (3b)
    Beltran (cf)
    Delgado (1b)
    Tatis (lf)
    A.Reyes (2b)
    Schneider (c)
    Pelfrey (rhp)

btw team meeting at 4:45 today to rally the troops.

  20. steadyeddie says:

Pelfrey is the right man at the right time; keep those inside pitches coming young man and take no guff from these DC upstarts!
    LET’s Go METS!

  21. metsluc says:

big game tonight .. lets go mets

  22. HeadlinerG60 says:

one of those 10 game winning streaks would be nice.

  23. SantanaCYYOung says:

where is murphy, where is evans??????

  24. Sylar says:

    Stupidity strikes!

I just can’t wait to see Argenis Reys’ gutty and gritty heart drip all as he goes 0-5……

  25. BlueCapsOnly says:

I think we need to go back to the outfield platoon of Church/Tatis in right and Murphy/Evans in left, because we were winning when using it…

  26. Tidewater says:

Murphy sits vs lefties these days. And Tatis has far better numbers than Evans!

  27. Gina says:

Where do you want them? In over Tatis and Church? Tatis has a .974 ops so far this month. And Church is obviously the every day right fielder.

  28. Dirtysanchez says:

not to mention manuel is already going to go with experiance these days more than anything

  29. SantanaCYYOung says:

what has castillo been doing lately?

again, a change needs to be made if it dosen’t work it dosen’t work

  30. Gina says:

Umm last night he hit a double and walked once in 4 plate appearances. What has A. Reyes done ever, even than make a lot of outs?

  31. SantanaCYYOung says:

he hit a double when the game was over, u got to be kidding me. i’m not saying reyes is the second coming but castillo is not getting it done and he does need consistent rest

  32. Nightlife says:

If we win tonight and A. Reyes goes something like 0-5 and boots a ball in the field the win would still be attributed to Castillo sitting.

  33. Gina says:

I posted a response but apparently it got eaten.

Anyway, when has A. Reyes ever gotten anything done offensively? I’m not saying Castillo is any good. I’m saying they’re both terrible, but A. Reyes is like Castillo’s terriblex2.
