Stats: The Bullpen late in Games
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 16, 2008 2:20 pm

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Mets have lost seven games this season in which they led in the ninth inning or later – their most such losses in one season since 1994.

What’s more, they have 11 blown saves in the ninth inning or later, tying them with the Brewers for second-most in baseball.

By the way, the Phillies are the only team in baseball who have not blown a save in the ninth inning or later this year.

and thats why my friends a good closer is important. If lidge had not been so awsome for the phillies imagine where the race would be…think about where WE would be if we had the same stat…its obviously possible but thats why having a good closer is important imo….

    • HOFMets57 says:

What’s a lockdown closer when you have ‘creativity’?

    • SeaverFan says:

Sure it would be great if we had even half of the blown saves back. We’d sure be in good shape then, wouldn’t we? If we only had a better bulpen then perhaps we would have been 7 games up with 17 to play. That is enough of a lead, right? I have been a Met fan for almost 40 years, so like all long time fans I have weathered some ups and many downs over the decades. I’m not sure how much more I can handle. The good thing about being blown out by the last place Nats yesterday was that I wasn’t giving birth to an ulcer wondering if we would blow it in the 9th. Does anyone think that we have even a remote chance of advancing deep into the playoffs should we make it? Perhaps we should be proactive now about avoiding the pain and just let the season go. I’m tired.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

well being a “mets fan for almost 40 years” im sure you are familiar with the phrase
        “ya gotta believe”

      • 4ROCCO says:

You hit the nail on the head. At least this current approach will be more merciful. Even with last year, how could anyone expect anything out of a playoff birth – three extra games?? We’ll never get out of Atlanta entacted!

  2. therealsince86 says:

Thus the biggest offseason need of the Mets is to sign Krod. Think that Lidge has not made the difference for the Phillies? Think how much ahead of the Phillies we would be right now if they had your average closer closing for them.

  3. Darth Manuel says:

yea we know this already… Last night has little to do with our bullpen blowing a lead. Lets stop wagging the dog.. and get to the real issue…

The Mets are mentally fragile, soft and think Swagger is what it takes to win a championship. We need to look no further than the Phillies to see what it takes to play in pennant race baseball.. Guts and aggression are the key to september.. Mets need to man up and get ANGRY

    • Dirtysanchez says:

Anger wont make you get the job done…
I believe the mets have pleanty of guts and aggression…i dont think looking at the phillies is a good comparison for pennant race baseball(unless you want to get knocked out of the first round by the colorado rookies). The mets just need to put it together consistantly…the talent is here..just got to find a way to make it work night in and night out

      • Darth Manuel says:

You can’t see that this team is already back on its heels! The ghosts of last September haunting their dreams.. You know how you solve that.. Its by getting angry and having no fear. The Mets are two games away from falling back into that Mentality and loosing everything. They think that by trying to keep things loose and pulling jokes and hazing rituals that it will keep a positive outlook. that will never work.. You can’t just pretend and distract yourself.. You have to meet the problem head on and beat it into the ground

        • mrose says:

          hmmm….
i gotta try to be a voice of reason and yes, I am just as worried about their play as everyon else.

The mets lose 2/3 to the braves (losing series does happen, even to bad teams, phillies lost 2/3 to the nats a week or two ago) …..the braves beat the HORRIBLE Brewers for 4….who ARE back on their heals…and then we lose 1 so far to the nats…

that isn’t back on their heals YET…its a bad 4 game stretch

        • Dirtysanchez says:

“You can’t just pretend and distract yourself.. You have to meet the problem head on and beat it into the ground”
-how did that approach work last year…

“They think that by trying to keep things loose and pulling jokes and hazing rituals that it will keep a positive outlook. that will never work”
-Why not try something new. Its worked since manuel came on board. They stayed loose and we witnessed the results(not to mention the players made referance to the clubhouse atomsphere under manuel compaired to willie).

“The Mets are two games away from falling back into that Mentality and loosing everything”
-and then the mets go on and win 13 straight and get into the postseason…please do not attempt to guess the menatlity of this group..there is no evidance anywhere to support that claim..

“You can’t see that this team is already back on its heels! The ghosts of last September haunting their dreams.. ”
-do you write for any ny newspaper..you would fit right in….if this is how you feel i suggest you stop watching as you will most likely be miserable from here on out.

“You know how you solve that.. Its by getting angry and having no fear”
-Oh is that the way to win games..ill be sure to send an email to manuel and the booth for them to address this.

        • Darth Manuel says:

Dirty… I hope your right.. I hope with everything in my soul that this team is just in a bad stretch and that last seasons ghosts are playing no role in this current slide.

watching the Phillies barrel over catchers and my team playing like its a gentleman’s game. Conversations on the base paths with opponents and an attitude that sends no message to the other team. this is no time for making friends. This is it.. They blow this one and we will never hear the end of it

        • Dirtysanchez says:

hey im with ya darth in the sense that they have alot to answer for in september but ya gotta have hope that this team will answer the critics and do what needs to be done. We are the best team in the NL east and we will live up to our potential. Thats my belief…everyone is entiled to their own i guess..even if it is a year old.

      • Boscov says:

I love reading comments on here about what fans think the Mets need to do to get back on track. When they win games, there’s no talk of fragile mindstate. When they lose a few, they’re weak, they think swagger wins games by itself, etc. It’s ridiculous. What kind of psychological analysis can you really give me from the seat of your couch? You see Reyes likes to dance, so he’s automatically fragile, and can’t get it done? If a fan is going to think he’s so smart as to know why this team is “breaking down” – which thye haven’t, this is just typical New Yorkers Freaking Out mode – then that fan should really be smart enough to understand he knows far too little about the team and the ‘chemistry’ to make conclusions like that. They win, everything’s great. They lose, everyone get their Freud psychobabble theories out and post em on here!

      • 4ROCCO says:

And if the Mets made it in last year – how do you think they would have fared against a team with ‘momentum.’

  4. BaltimoreMets says:

Are you trying to say that the Phillies trading someone more apt for track and field for a 100% closer was a good move?

    • Boscov says:

Take the Duaner Sanchez Hindsight Goggles off and try to remember, if you can, the talks of how “Lidge may never be the same again” and the “promise” of Michael Bourn and the “risk” the Phillies were taking. It seemed like a good trade, yeah, but it was far from a slam dunk. Remember, this is before Bourn goes out and hits .220 from the leadoff spot.

      • starz31 says:

this is true…I don’t think one Phillies fan expected Lidge not be blow a save all year. There was certainly risk in that move and it did pay off.

Let’s not forgot though, Lidge did blow a tie game to us earlier in the year.

  5. dancran says:

I can’t wait for Lidge to blow a big save the last week of the season. It will happen.

  6. LetsGetMetsmerized says:

The Phils are due for a couple this week.

  7. Gary Busey says:

    LOL THIS PICTURE

    Garbage Pail Kids FTW

  8. dancran says:

He is way overdue for a big time blown save. In that ballpark, I don’t care who you are or how good you are, it’ll get to him eventually.

  9. XbLaDe31 says:

too bad the phillies dont play the cards maybe albert can remind him what he can do to him LMAO that has to be the longest home run i have ever seen…WOW

    • Dirtysanchez says:

lol maybe we can get hanley to wear a puljos jerzy for his ab against lidge…just a thought lol…

    • Dafatone80 says:

Lidge suffered from PTSD for years after that.

      Pujols’ Terrifying Swing Disorder.

I might’ve stolen that line from someone here, so credit goes to you, whoever you are.

  10. Fregosi says:

Omar, is that you? Why don’t you stop wishing that Lidge will blow a save and get to work on getting us a real closer???

  11. Furioso says:

How funny is it that sooooooooooooooooooo many of you were laughing when the Phils got Lidge?

“HA! Lidge will implode once he gives up a few HRs at that bandbox and the fans turn on him”

    Nice job guys

  12. ravi3 says:

This has been a see-saw battle for the last 6 weeks. The Mets weren’t going to run away with it. If there is any consolation, it is this: Everytime the Mets built a lead of 2-3 games, the Phils would come back to tie, and MAYBE spend a day in first place, only to have the Mets storm back again, so there is hope.

Of course at the same time, the Phils spent all of 2 days in first place last season,

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

If the Brewers keep losing, and the Astros keep getting no-hit and 1-hit, then it won’t matter if the Phils re-take the division.

      • ravi3 says:

yes it will, because that means we get the Cubbies in the NLDS.

        • Nightlife says:

I cannot claim to be an expert on the Cubs, but based on my rudimentary understanding of the history of the Cubs franchise don’t you want to play them in the playoffs?

        • starz31 says:

mets division and phil’s WC…we play the west
vice versa: we play the cubs

    • ksuth says:

And how many times can they storm back from being 1-2 games down?

  13. Seaver41 says:

I guess Omar is as delusional about the foundation of the bullpen as John McCain is about the foundation of the economy.

  14. MadMex says:

No way we were getting a closer to replace Billy this year, and I’m convinced more than ever about how much of a crapshoot putting together a good bullpen is. It’s hard for relief pitchers to pull themselves out of funks–sometimes it can last a season or more. And there seems to be little way of telling with a good 60-75% of relievers whether they’ll have a great year of a crap one. Guys learn one new out pitch and it totally turns them around. Guys lose confidence and mechanics, and they’re toast.

This year, we ended up with mostly clunkers that were bound to be exposed eventually when Billy went down. They started out great, but it was only a matter of time.

That said, if the Mets offense can have a few big scoring games in a row and take the pressure off the pen, I think it could help them catch their collective breath and get back on track.

  15. Made in the Shea-de says:

    Cerrone – love the graphic!

Bonus points to anyone who can name that Garbage Pail Kid’s twin – NO GOOGLING! (Tried posting the name on the card above but I may have gotten filtered.)

  16. Fregosi says:

    yep, it’s like lipstick on a pig…

  17. gipper82475 says:

The Garbage Pail Kids picture is almost enough to make me laugh off the Mets current woes.

  18. stickguy says:

    some points:

    - there is still penty of time for Lidge to blow a save. The season ain’t over yet! And wouldn’t it be sweet if it was game 162 and knocked the Phils out of the playoffs?

    - don’t worry about who you play (seems lots of folks were excited to get the Cards in ‘06). Just get in it and win it.

    - Rre the creativity comment from yesterday, that could mean a trade, or an internal guy. Maybe get a blocked set up man with the stuff and mentality? Or convert a SP (not maine, but maybe a Parnell?) It has been done before, often, and the Red SOx were a winning team when they did it with Papelbon.
