Blog: Familiarity, Reasons and Socks
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 17, 2008 9:29 am

If today feels familiar to you, Faith and Fear in Flushing explains why.

Eric at Amazin Avenue wants the Mets to make the playoffs for two reason: Awesomeness and to shut up the Media.

The most superstitious Mets fan in the blogosphere, Andrew at Hot Foot, has decided to wear his Lucky Tube Socks.

Lastly, Toby Hyde, from Mets Minor League Blog, takes a look at Mets prospects 3B Jefry Marte and OF Cesar Puello, who have been ranked among the top players in the Gulf Coast League by Baseball America.

Can we put up the Phillies magic number? Maybe it’ll curse them the way it’s cursed us.

    • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

      Interesting stat:

The Mets were 7-3 in September prior to losing the last three games. Because two of those losses came in doubleheaders, the Mets technically only lost one day out of the first 13 days of September.

Of course, the three games since Sunday have been abysmal. But it’s just three games. Four would be bad.

  2. SteveHenderson9-14-80 says:

We all know the following undeniable facts:

1-The Mets have no chance of winning the division
2-The Mets have virtually no chance of making the playoffs even as the wildcard
3-It is unlikely that the Mets will win more than 3 games the remainder of the season

The Mets are finished. This is a weak team with no heart; a team that chokes when the pressure is on, like bullies fleeing when stood up to. They should buy pink dresses and wear lipstick.

    Put a fork in ‘em.

    • Prismo says:

      Undeniable?

I deny it, therefore it is not undeniable.

      • SteveHenderson9-14-80 says:

By that logic, you could say gravity is deniable. According to you, anyone can say anything is undeniable if they choose to deny the objective truth. The word “undeniable” is never used this way in the English language.

    • mrose says:

you may be the worse “fan” ever

    • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

No, I agree that it is an undeniable fact that the Mets may not do these things. Undeniable fact is a strong predecessor to “virtual” and “unlikely” — get some balls and stand by your feelings. Talk about hedging your bets.

    • Gland says:

I’m going to take this as sarcasm.

I don’t care if you meant it that way.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

someone wanted attention this morning..considering this is as stupid as posts get

  3. bigvito22 says:

I have tickets to the first home game of the NLDS. Of course, the way things are going, we’ll only get in as the wild card and have to get swept by the Cubs (which would be a chilling thought because it would mean I’m there live for Shea’s last game ever)

I really hope they can turn things around but its almost impossible to be optimistic at this point.

  4. arientin says:

    Great post by Eric.

My questions for the other die-hard fans are, ‘What happened to Ya Gotta Believe?’

When Manuel came on board as manager he’s been repeating that this will probably come down to the last day of the season…and it very well may.

But as fans, as media, as human beings, lets believe in our team folks. I know I don’t want to just breathe a sigh of relief when the Mets make the playoffs. I’m going to be brash, confident and know we’re going to do some damage.

If not, I’ll have 5 months to figure out where I went wrong…just like Omar and the players.

    • RodKanehl says:

Why? Based on their history, based on the same bad managment, based on the same choking players, based on what?

      • Dirtysanchez says:

Based on the fact that we love this team and we want them to succeed. Look its one thing if you want to throw in the towel and want to be miserable..dont try to drag down or try to get people to follow you.

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

‘Ya Gotta Believe’ died in 1973, Game 7 in Oakland.

  5. janss36 says:

I think last September really killed ‘Ya’ Gotta Believe’

It will be very telling next week against Chicago if there are 25K in the stands or 55K… With things the way they are right now and the way those games will be meaning ful for us, we SHOULD have 55K in the house… I think there won’t be and if that is the case it’s weak…

9-3 to win the East… 7-5 to win the WC… Anything less and it’s over…

    • SteveHenderson9-14-80 says:

The Mets may very well be 4-5 games out in their division by the time the Cubs series begins.

      • janss36 says:

I don’t disagree… But I think they will take at least 1 against the Nats and 1 against ATL…

      • mrose says:

dude, its one thing to be negative..you are being an a-hole…truly

        • MetsLv31 says:

To be fair, at least in this post he said “may” and didn’t claim his opinions to be “undeniable facts”

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

Even his undeniable facts were that they “virtually” had no chance and that they were “unlikely” to win three games. Hedge your bets much?

Here’s one: The Mets may never lose another game this season.

Here’s another undeniable fact: There is a 99% chance the Mets win 92 games. If they don’t, that’s the 1%.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

7-5 to win the Wild Card? In case you haven’t noticed, the Brewers lost 5 straight and even the great CC Sabathia couldn’t stop the bleeding. Same with the Astros. Roy Oswalt got clobbered yesterday after the no-hit and 1 hit games.

  6. casey s. says:

Well, with 17 games to play the Mets managed to lose first place in just five games this year. It took them 17 games last year. Way to improve over last season!

    • janss36 says:

Well they at least still have 12 to play with… Will they show some gonads this time?

    • gomets6091 says:

last year they had a 7.5 game lead, this year they had a 2. Are you really that daft to not see the difference?

      • janss36 says:

They were up 4 in the loss column with 17 to play…

Last season they were up 7 in the loss column with 17 to play…

both leads are ones that should be closed out…

      • casey s. says:

talk about daft…they had a 3.5 game lead (not a 2 game lead as you say) and lost it in 5 games!

so, they had half the lead they did last year (3.5 vs 7 games) and blew it in less than 30% of the time it took them to blow 7 games. so, an equivalent dive job would have been to blow 3.5 games in 8.5 games.

        do you understand now?

        • gomets6091 says:

actually, we’re both wrong. It was a 3 game lead with 17 to play.

I was thinking of the 2-game lead we held coming into September and at the end of the Phillies series.

        • janss36 says:

4 in the loss column and that’s the only thing that matters in September…

We’re even with Philly in the loss column…

        • casey s. says:

gomets, i’m not sure what you are looking at, but with all respect, it was a 3.5 game lead with 17 to play!

on sept 10, the mets beat the nats 13-10 to go 3.5 games ahead of the phillies. after the game, the mets moved to 82-63, which means they had played 145 games. 162-145=17. there were 17 games to play and they lead the phillies by 3.5 games.

        • gomets6091 says:

casey – the Mets were off on Sept. 11, and the Phillies won, so technically, with 17 to play, they had BOTH a 3.5 game lead and a 3 game lead. Sorry for the mixup, I went to the standings page and just counted back 5 games, so the standings I saw first were for the 11th.

    • SheaVendor says:

BIG DIFFERENCE!!!…They had a 7 game lead last season…you can’t lose that in 4 games!!!

  7. MadChas says:

I believed last September..Look where that got me.

    • ugbmets21 says:

do you think the team will be overhauled? one of wright, reyes, or beltran i think need to go. at this point, idk who to move

maybe the rockies will want beltran. i know they did at the trade deadline. for holliday?

i also think it is time for the team to get a “clutch” player. if that means giving manny a 4 year deal but having 2 of those years productive i think u have to do it. he brings heart to a team. any thoughts on how to fix the problem with this team? pitching?bullpen? general manager?

      • Gina says:

I think Omar would be stupid to move either of those 3. And the rockies wanting Beltran was an unfounded rumor. The only reason they wanted to trade Holliday is because they won’t be able to pay him when he hits FA, so why would they take on Beltran’s huge contract.

        • janss36 says:

Trade Beltran to LA for James Loney and Kuo…

        • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Ok. I’ve had enough. I’m not coming back here today or listening to sports radio or any of this crap….THERE ARE 12 GAMES TO GO…..IF THEY’RE DEAD NEXT WEEK THEN WE CAN TALK ABOUT WHO NEEDS TO MOVE…UNTIL THEN STFU

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          AGREED 100%

        • Made in the Shea-de says:

For real. While it is undeniable that the Mets are not looking good right now (and no team does when they are slumping), can we save the hot stove talk for hot stove weather?

Though I do think it is riotous that someone thinks Wright, Reyes, and Beltran need to be dealt to “fix” the “problem.”

      • MetsLv31 says:

Sigh…see my post in the previous thread on “clutch players”. When we sign Manny for 4 years, I’m pretty sure you’ll be more concerned with his avg. and less with his heart…

Fixing the problem starts most glaringly with the bullpen. Take away half of the games we’ve blown late and we’re easily way ahead in the division.

        • Gina says:

I agree, the bullpen needs an overhaul. Not just bringing in a closer, but bringing in guys that aren’t completely situational guys. Part of the reason the bullpen seems overworked is because most of our arms can only pitch to one or two batters before you have to take them out.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

exactly gina. We have a pen of specialist and not many relievers that are “crossover” pitchers. We need to get rid of the junk(heilman/feliciano or show one of the two not both) and make the bullpen equipt to handle more than one batter. We resign ayala no matter what. We sign a closer. Dsanchez i expect a better year from him next year. We have Stokes also in the pen that can pitch to R/L. We have smith and feliciano for situational purposes and bingo we have a better pen. I guess you can throw parnell in there too(i have yet to see him pitch) and have rincon replace feliciano or show.

  8. MadChas says:

you fix this team with a Youth Movement. The kids that still have a heart.

    • Fregosi says:

Our “youth” are playing for the Twins and Nats now.

      • Gina says:

I’m not completely sure what you mean but I think I agree, pretty much the youth movement we have going on right now is about as much of a youth movement as we’re going to get. Unless Omar moves players in the off-season or something.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

ay please dont start with this heart nonsense….murphy/evans/niese have as much “heart” as anyone on the team. We got outplayed and didnt execute..thats why we lost. Has nothing to do with “heart”

  9. ugbmets21 says:

the wilpons should just take a poll from the fans on what players they think can help this team next year…that way they can blame us and the team for another collapse. ughhh im so tired as most of you are, rooting for a team all season to have them play like sh*t when it matters the most.

ohh btw knight 8 inn 4 hits 6 ks…we will loose 3-1 blowing the 1-0 lead in the 8th. im calling it now!!!

  10. metsrbest says:

Sorry guys. Count me in with the “it’s over” crowd. Last year is in their heads. The schedule doesn’t get any easier. No team is going to lie down. They don’t have the heart. It doesn’t make me less of a fan to feel this way. And if at the end of the season the collapse is completed, there is no way Jerry Manuel should be brought back.

  11. Dirtysanchez says:

so i guess i cant say anything positive about the mets either without my post being gobbled up either
what were the “trigger” words today
    hope…positive…win……….
    bet this shows up

  12. gomets6091 says:

Remember last year, when the Mets had the big lead early in the season, then played .500 ball the rest of the way while the Phillies crept up behind them, then got really close after the 4 game sweep, but then the Mets got hot for a week while the Phillies got cold and the Mets re-opened the 17 game lead before ultimately collapsing again despite having an “easier” schedule?

Who’s to say that right now the Phillies aren’t in the midst of that little hot streak, reopening their lead that they had most of the season, and that they won’t ultimately collapse down the stretch.

  13. MadMex says:

I’m headed out to tonight’s game. Dusting off my 1986 lucky road jersey. Horrible, uncomfortable polyester, but I’ll do anything I can to help the boys out.

Frankly, last year has innured me to this. They literally made me sick last year. I was a horror to be around for both my wife and kids all of September. This year, I’m just going to hope the boys will find a way to do it.

Frankly, despite the fact we didn’t do it with the bats the past couple of days, this isn’t an offense problem. This series would have a completely different feel if we had come in on a 5 game winning streak, which is exactly what it would have been if we didn’t have the combination of crucial injuries and underperforming members of the bullpen. Those two losses have caused the offense to feel like it needs to score 10 runs every night to win, hence the pressing and subsequent underperformance.

That said, this spiral can certainly straighten itself out. One good offensive game can get this guys clicking again, and I think there are a few guys (Smith, Stokes) that are proving they can handle September. We’re lucky in the fact that Houston is cooling off, and Milwaukee may be headed into a complete death spiral. Frankly, I want the Division, but Shea deserves at least one last October run, and all I ask for out of my team each year is to get to the postseason–all else is a wonderful bonus.

    Lets Go Mets

  14. janss36 says:

Joe Smith should be closing… He’s having an excellent September…

  15. Darth Manuel says:

these guys were conditioned to play like this in september. Their failure in 06 and the debacle in 07 all the while having a manager that didn’t understand his players and never gave them the right motivation. Now Jerry is in the drivers seat and needs to get these guys to take their brains out. Live in the moment and beat the carp out of its opponents. Its not about collapses, its about War.. Its about playing as hard as you can and enjoying the race. Jerry should of prepared these guys much sooner for this situation. But he didn’t and now we are where we are. Reyes Wright Beltran and Delgado have to learn to thrive as spoilers. Love the pressure and feed on the energy of the other team. Its time Reyes and Wright became everything they can be and this is a necessary obstacle they have to get by before they become legends in NY. Hope they want it bad enough.

Man up and get dirty. Swagger is another word for thinking your better than everyone else. That doesn’t work anymore when the little guy stands up and punches you square in the mouth. Now its about Guts.
