Al Reyes, who never threw a single pitch, was released by the Mets prior to tonight’s game.
Reyes was 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA in 26 games with the Rays this season.
It was clear that Jerry Manuel wasn’t planning on using Reyes, so this is the best thing for everyone. I guess the three Reyes’s won’t be able to play at the same time, which would probably have been some type of record.
The team also let Gustavo Molina go back to Venezuela so he could prepare for winter ball.

I miss him already
Um, why did we sign him?
insurance..if ayala couldnt get the job done
Regis, it feels like it must have been “more than meets the eye”. I don’t want to start false rumors – I’m just wondering, did he fail a drug test? I mean, there doesn’t to seem to be any other explanation I can think of with the pathetic nature of our bullpen, that this guy didn’t even get to come out and throw even one pitch in a game, when we either had a huge lead or were behind by many runs. I mean, Heilman, who was injured, made what – 70 plus appearances this season??? I can’t think of any other explanation. How bad could his bullpen sessions have sucked to not get a look? I mean, they signed him. They must have scouted him before they signed him. Did he continuously throw bullpen sessions from immediately after he was scouted and signed up until today? Such an abrupt change in performance? Seems too hard to believe. I wonder if we’ll ever get the true story. Because if it turns out that they just mismanaged this guy and unjustly didn’t give him a chance, it’s way more of an embarrassment to the organization than to him. Word travels fast amongst players and the Mets have a chance of damaging their reputations in the player relations area. Frankly, I would have preferred that he came in last night and gave up a double and single, before being taken out, instead of Heilman. At least, we would then know why he was releasedll, to some extent. At least he would have been given some chance to fail or to contribute positively to the team that he signed, in good faith, to be a part of, nearly a month ago.
I don’t get it… this guy has Major League closing experience, and was fairly successful at it. This won’t likely make or break the team, but a team that is struggling to get outs out of the bullpen could use this guy. I like Jerry Manuel a lot but his makes little sense.
Obviously something was going on behind the scenes that we as fans are not privy to. Reyes had a history of being temperamental he also was a pretty lousy pitcher in TB this year.
I guess it was a combination of shooting his mouth off in the clubhouse and/or just not having it anymore.
Please send Aaron Heilman after him!
send heilman to guantanamo!
It’s funny that Wright isn’t hitting now and the rest of the team is….If this is the case I hope Wright doesn’t get another hit the rest of the season as long as the Mets keep winning.
According to recent reports, Jerry feels that Johan, Ollie, Pedro and Pelfrey are all aces.
Given that four aces beats three reyes, he opted to drop discard one reyes.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Something had to be wrong with him. That is the only explanation I can come up with.
i agree…he must be hurting or something…otherwise it’s crazy to get rid of him…i really thought he would be useful…he was pretty good, at times, for the Rays last year.
Did anyone get to see Al Reyes in uniform. I’m guessing the back of jersey actually did say ‘Al Reyes’ since ‘A.Reyes’ and ‘Reyes’ were already taken.
It said Reyes. He had #36. I saw him in the background of someone talking during BP somewhere.
Why?
What a joke. I’m thinking there had to be a behind the scene confrontation with him or something because this makes no sense. No way its an injury either as I’m sure the players union would have a field day if he was released due to that.
Agreed, something else is going on here. By releasing him we’re pretty much saying he’s worse than the bunch we have, and how can we say that without seeing him pitch. Seeing Ayala’s success, I would’ve thought that maybe the team would’ve at least given him a shot to see if the change of scenery was good for him.
I think he might be a cannibal.
The radio guys said that he lacked sufficient velocity to retire ML hitters, due to ongoing elbow troubles. They added that Reyes himself admitted to this.
Hmm…either that or he signs with Milwaukee and settles down their pen for the last 10 days.
That’s probably right though – clearly something was wrong with him.
Then why bring him in in the first place?
I hope Minaya remembers how to build a good bullpen next year. He did it last year but has reverted back to his 2005 model the past two years of signing every guy you can and seeing what sticks.
I don’t get this. I agree that something must have happened that we don’t know about, because I see no other reason not to give Reyes a shot.
By the way, that 3-year, $10 mil Chad Bradford contract is still looking pretty good.
I heard he wasn’t gangsta enough.
WANGSTAAAAAAAAAAA
Need I remind people that Dunaer Sanchez has an ERA of 4.45 this season? Or that Pedro Feliciano has posted an ERA of 3.98? Clearly, just glancing at a guy’s ERA (or even past “successes”) doesn’t tell you the whole story about how he’s been pitching, particularly in the case of relievers.
Before people start saying, “Stupid move, Omar/Jerry,” how about we way until an explanation is given? What if Reyes had seen a further drop in velocity from the time we signed him, or he’s just unsure if he wants to continue to pitch? There are plenty of reasonable explanations as to why he could be released.
