postGame: Mets 9 Braves 5

by Mike Nichols

The first-place Mets (86–67) defeated the Braves (67–87) by the score of 9 to 5 in Atlanta, tonight.

For a recap, boxscore and stats from tonight’s game, click here.

Thank you, Daniel Murphy.

With one out and two on in the eighth inning, the ’super rookie’ stroked a pinch-hit doubled to left field that broke a 5-5 tie. I don’t care who the opposing starting pitcher is, Murphy needs to the everyday left fielder from here on out. As Cerrone likes to say, ‘Daniel Murphy means business.’

For the second time in three games, Jose Reyes led off the game with a homerun. Reyes is now batting .400 during the Mets current road trip.

Nick Evans, batting in an unfamiliar eighth hole, hit a key homerun in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie.

A porous Mets defense didn’t help Oliver Perez’s cause tonight, but the left-hander pitched effectively through six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, while walking three and striking out six. Earlier this season, i.e. San Francisco, where Ollie would have had a meltdown if his defense played as poorly as they did tonight. However, Ollie stayed composed and pitched effective, looking especially impressive in the sixth.

After Ollie left, Jerry Manuel played another round of Let’s Make A Deal with his relievers, bringing in five pitchers to secure the final nine outs, with Aaron Heilman, yes that Aaron Heilman, getting the biggest out of them all in the seventh.

The Phillies lost tonight, meaning the Mets now lead the National League East by one game in the loss column.

The Mets continue their three-game series with the Braves in Atlanta tomorrow night, starting at 7:10 pm, with Pedro Martinez (5-5, 5.47 ERA) taking on Jorge Campillo (7-7, 3.79 ERA).

honestly i’m not sure my heart can take the rest of hte season

darkstar73 September 19, 2008 at 11:36 pm

if you’re a true Mets fan, you’re heart is with this team, and if you can’t take it, I don’t know what to tell you. Seriously, this is baseball, not a family member with a chronic illness, or you money disappearing on the stock market, it’s baseball, and frankly, this is what it’s all about. I have but one thing to say…LETS GO METS!

kingman 26 September 19, 2008 at 11:44 pm

That is one well-said post Darkstar.

darkstar73 September 19, 2008 at 11:51 pm

i’m back kingman, this site needs me more than ever

Two-By-Four September 20, 2008 at 1:55 am

Who are you? :)

rogasm September 20, 2008 at 8:50 am

Welcome back Darkstar! It’s been a while. There are only a few of us originals left!

khmustache September 19, 2008 at 11:45 pm

it’s an idiom dude…you don’t actually think that things bite you in the as* or that you actually do stick it to the man do you? try to use some common sense before you chastise people online.

darkstar73 September 19, 2008 at 11:49 pm

i don’t care what you think i’m doing or what you claim you were saying, you were expressing an inability to “take it,” when this IS what it’s all about, and further more, when I say i’m sticking it to the man, I really AM sticking it to the man.

khmustache September 19, 2008 at 11:53 pm

so you stab people on a regular basis? seriously dude, just look at my past posts, i’m one of the sunny fans, gimme a break…

darkstar73 September 19, 2008 at 11:56 pm

fair enough bro, no harm intended, if you’ve been around here for a while, you’ll know i’m king of the optimists, i’ve just been lurking for months now…

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 12:02 am

Wait wait wait, so you mean peoples’ lives aren’t on the lives if the Mets lose? This is news to me.

We are all on the same side folks. These games ARE somewhat painful to watch — you can’t deal with a little hyperbole?

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 12:03 am

*aren’t on the line.

Hmmm…was it the Aztecs or Mayans who sacrificed the losing ball players? If that were the case, historically nobody would wanna’ play for the Phills…

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 12:05 am

Kind of wondering, if you’re king of the optimists, where have you been for a few months? Don’ t think I’ve seen you commenting for awhile. Is it b/c of all the negativity with some when things aren’t going well?

Just hear so many say ‘I’m outta here. I can’t take it anymore’…..

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 12:07 am

no harm no foul…i just wanted to get across that my heart was beating abnormally high for a 9-5 game. believe me i bleed orange and blue and i truly think that they can do it this year…

Two-By-Four September 20, 2008 at 2:04 am

“you’ll know i’m king of the optimists, i’ve just been lurking for months now…”

How are Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Captain Hook, Mr. Snee, Tiger Lily and The Crocodile?

sandiegometsman September 19, 2008 at 11:55 pm

Great statement.. My heart lives and dies with this team.. I’m just thrilled that these guys are pulling out of that mini-collapse and seem to have a grip on the playoffs and hopefully the division title.. My good ness what a difference a week makes.
PS. Id hate to be a Brewers fan right about now. I wish it were the Phillies in the Brewers position right now.
GO METS-and GO JETS as i’m going to the game on Monday night in SD..

cver September 20, 2008 at 12:37 am

Is that my man, Mr. STAR???? We miss you in the bleachers!!! How have you been? Nice to have the Mets back in first place, where they are meant to be and STAY! What about the GD and Allman Bros reunion at Penn State? Did you hear about that? Take care, buddy and please come and say hello in the Bleachers!

darkstar73 September 20, 2008 at 1:09 am

oh of course I heard, unfortunately it sold out in about 2.2 seconds, should be amazing though, good to hear from you cver. I’ll try and make it back to the bleachers soon.

cver September 20, 2008 at 1:33 am

Great man – We all look forward to seeing you back there – we’ve all been asking about you (and of course, the other guy that is MIA, RichardK).

OrangeNblue September 19, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Stop being a wimp! Daniel Murphy is the anti-David Wright. This guy’s clutch!

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 12:29 am

yea, david wright and his 2 hits and 2 rbi is awful. CUT HIM

steve333 September 20, 2008 at 1:37 am

Without Wright there is no first place. Seriously, the guy has been steady and constant all year long no matter what was going on around him.

steadyeddie September 20, 2008 at 8:49 am

Did you say “steady”?

m29w_12789 September 20, 2008 at 7:32 am

Guys I would like to hear your opinion – Would Jesse Crain who presently the Twins setup man for Joe Nathan be ideal for the closer next year. Over the years the mets and twins have made numerous trades- ala Koosman -Orosco, Santana – Gomez, humber etc. Setup stats really are hard to judge for closing. I do know he can really bring it. He has a fast ball in the 90’s. If Nathan did not sign he was earmarked to close . The Twins have Pat Nasek as the setup down the line

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 12:04 pm

I hear ya Khmustache, even if some of the a.ssholes on this board don’t

Bacci September 19, 2008 at 11:35 pm

believe

metsmad22 September 19, 2008 at 11:37 pm

hey, nick evans in left has been great too, HUGE home run today, but Murph is just UNREAL.

SheaHeyKid24 September 19, 2008 at 11:37 pm

i’ll be at the game tomorrow, look for a dude down the 3rd base line in a wright jersey. go mets!

imtiredofguiseppefranco September 19, 2008 at 11:38 pm

booooooyah

keith-hernandez-says September 19, 2008 at 11:40 pm

Thank you, Daniel Murphy.

metsmad22 September 19, 2008 at 11:40 pm

the ESPN MLB page on the day the mets lost 1st place was FILLED with “collapse part 2.0″ “phillies own the east” blah blah…..tonight? “marlins win record 9th in a row”……..

mr.gee21 September 19, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Nobody in the media is rooting for the Mets.

Lots of writers picked the Mets to finish THIRD in the N.L. East.

There is still season to be played, obviously, but yeah, it is going to take one heck of a week before any of those writers give the Mets any respect.

khmustache September 19, 2008 at 11:46 pm

most national writers picked the braves as the ws winners…it’s a better story if the mets “collapse” again

ravi3 September 20, 2008 at 12:31 am

See I would think the Mets winning would be great for the media…So many stories of failure and redemption, behind the scenes drama, and players stepping up. Then of course there is the tension of the late September pennant drive as the climax.

Two-By-Four September 20, 2008 at 2:22 am

After last years debacle I tried to find teams in the past that had similar meltdowns to see what the follow-up season was like. In every instance that I checked the team followed up the late season collapse with a poor season. All of the teams kept their manager and most of the players after the melt-down. The Mets started off that way but have turned it around under Manuel. I think the Mets season story no matter how it turns out in the next 9 days is most compelling. I think the media is missing the boat here.

ridethesnake September 20, 2008 at 9:56 am

How come there are no stories about the Brewers collapsing for a second straight year!

rustyjr September 20, 2008 at 11:12 am

small market team snake plus the media loves the yanks and hates the mets

Ceetar September 19, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Just the way it is..for now.

If they sweep the Braves..Monday’s paper: “Sayonora for Stadium”

Although, it’s looking like the Yankees will be eliminated on the final day of Yankee Stadium. fitting for a franchise that’s doomed for 86 years of failure.

gomets6091 September 20, 2008 at 12:05 am

that will be a pretty awesome sendoff for that overhyped trash dump in the Bronx.

I’ve gotta say though, I’m excited for their new stadium, looks like it’s gonna be real nice. Too bad it’s gonna be wasted on a 4th place team…

curiojeff September 20, 2008 at 7:34 am

Prediction: Another year of bad Yankees performance and people will start talking about the “curse of Yankee Stadium,” as in, “the Yanks are jinxed ever since they decided to tear down the original House That Ruth Built. Sweet.

just-mlb September 20, 2008 at 8:33 am

And in a division with the Rays who look slated to become the next Braves…and also the red sox….Yankees / Jays / Orioles look to battle for 3rd place for the next 10 years

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 1:18 am

The headline right now? “Time to Shine: The NL East leading Phillies have enjoyed Septembers under manager Charlie Manuel, and this one has been no different.”

Okay, the Phils might still win this thing… but maybe somebody over at the Worldwide Leader should AT LEAST take the phrase “NL Leading” out of that caption. They’re asleep at the wheel in Bristol again. I don’t care that it’s 1:18 in the morning! (Although that’s a pretty good reason not to have updated yet, I guess.)

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 2:17 am

WOW — that is pretty disgusting. Better not be there when I wake up in the morning, or ESPN will no longer be bookmarked.

stone11375 September 20, 2008 at 6:22 am

i heard them say the mets are gonna need to come back to beat the braves when the game was tied at 5-5

krumbledkookie September 19, 2008 at 11:42 pm

We’ve said this before, but Pedro Martinez makes his biggest start as a Met tomorrow evening. Let’s hope this one turns out better than the previous “biggest starts” have.

I have a feeling that it will…

LETS GO METS!!!

vbmetfan September 19, 2008 at 11:43 pm

darkstar…what a well thought out grown up comment…i love it, seriously!!! with all the bad stuff going on in the market and all this election craziness, this is FUN!!! of course i am a die hard met fan, every night im glued, but its just a game, its exciting, it takes you away from harsh realities!

darkstar73 September 20, 2008 at 12:25 am

thank you, just trying to bring some perspective to a crazy season, gotta love baseball though, what a game…

metsomniac September 20, 2008 at 4:16 am

get a room

rustyjr September 20, 2008 at 11:04 am

damn someone is working the nightshift :P

Midtown September 19, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Can Murphy please please please please please please please please be our starting second baseman next season? Then we can sign a capable free agent (i.e. not Moises Alou) for left, and maybe have a consistently solid offense for once.

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 12:31 am

I’m with all the rational commentors on metsblog who want wright gone because he unclutch and murphy at third. I mean, wright is awful. Not one of his 116ish RBIs have been in a big spot. What a LOOOOSER

MH September 20, 2008 at 1:36 am

Surely you jest.

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 10:50 am

yes, i do

rustyjr September 20, 2008 at 11:05 am

thank goodness hotch or we would have to ask for your elliot maddox fan club card back :)

Two-By-Four September 20, 2008 at 2:33 am

If people can say that about A-Rod after he drove in 156 runs last year then why should Wright be immune from similar treatment?

Steviefan84 September 20, 2008 at 4:27 am

No, Wright can’t be criticized until he sleeps with a popular female singer that’s way older than him, have children with his ex wife and then get a divorce, be caught going into a strip joint and interrupt the last game of the world series that he will opt-out of his contract.

gomets6091 September 20, 2008 at 10:37 am

I hope he sleeps with Cher. That would totally 1-up ARods Madonna thing.

You forgot: screw over the Mets because he wants more billboards than Derek Jeter and a private jet, sign with a last place team, win an undeserved MVP after 2 season in which he actually deserved it, then go to the Evil Empire, where in his first playoffs he tries to swat a ball out of a first basemen’s glove like a little girl.

bvaz September 20, 2008 at 8:14 am

I am pretty sure this will be the case but why the hell are you worried about next season right now?
there are 9 games left. worry about the offseason in november.

danthemanmurphy September 19, 2008 at 11:44 pm

yes daniel murphy, thank you.

metsmad22 September 19, 2008 at 11:44 pm

i have ZERO faith in Pedro……I actually look at it as the same as if John Neise or Bobby Parnell started…..i’m just goin with it.

mr.gee21 September 19, 2008 at 11:47 pm

Well, the Bravos will be putting up a righty tomorrow night — hopefully we stomp him, and Pedro gives us a solid five.

krumbledkookie September 19, 2008 at 11:51 pm

5? I’m looking for 7 strong from Pedro tomorrow night. This is the pennant race, man. Mediocrity probably won’t cut it.

mr.gee21 September 19, 2008 at 11:53 pm

I’d love a complete game no hitter, but I’m just being realistic…

If Pedro can go five and keep us in it, I’m okay. If he goes seven, well, fantastic. Just not likely…

Steviefan84 September 20, 2008 at 4:34 am

Everytime the Mets start a winning streak, it raises our expectations and then they go into a tailspin and start losing a few and the same can be said about the Phillies. I think two of the most unpredictable teams in baseball right now aside from a few others.

Both fan bases must have little hair with tons of pain medication for the rollarcoaster ride the team is putting them on. It’s fun watching this pennant race come down to the wire and see which team wants it more.

The Brewers seem to be hanging on by a thread and I don’t follow their team as much as the Mets and whatever the Phils are doing but losing Ben Sheets is a big hit to their starting rotation.

This is baseball at it’s best so let’s all enjoy the wild ride!

johnstearns September 20, 2008 at 5:48 am

> Everytime the Mets start a winning streak

That’s not how I remember July, August, and September so far. They had two huge win streaks in there. They’re due for another.

altru426 September 19, 2008 at 11:46 pm

awesome. pure awesomeness.

LET’S GO METS BABYYYYYYYYYYYY

vbmetfan September 19, 2008 at 11:47 pm

we need Petey to shut the bravos down tomorrow baby!! keep that NL east lead…..i admit, when i went to the game in DC on tuesday (i live in virginia beach) it was BAD!!! i wasnt giving up, but it was bad,… what a great game baseball is!!!…down and out one day, on top of the world two days later!!!

NickA33 September 19, 2008 at 11:47 pm

Just came back from Turner. What a game! It was electric at the field tonight, tons of Met fans! When Reyes lead off w/ the HR we went nuts. Then D. Murph…he’s clutch!

I got Reyes autograph, got hit w/ a foul ball, ended up on SNY in the 8th and we won the game, moving into 1st place….great night!

Lets go Petey, we need you to come through tomorrow!!

sandiegometsman September 19, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Did you actually get the ball that hit you? Sounds like you had a busy night tonight..

NickA33 September 20, 2008 at 12:05 am

No, my boy next to me did. It hit me square in the ribs and fell to the ground, he jumped down and got it..pr*ck! It was funny as hell though, lol. Yea busy night indeed!!

vbmetfan September 19, 2008 at 11:49 pm

muprh is the next DW…i think nick e is going to be good as well…..cant lose total faith in pedro just yet….i think he will pitch well tomorrow night, i really do

metsmad22 September 19, 2008 at 11:57 pm

the original D Wright….I hope murph never develops power, as it ruins good hitters and turns them into sluggers……david wright’s approach is as a #4 hitter now…..and i don’t like it

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 12:04 am

That’s an incredibly dumb statement.

Good hitters who develop power become BETTER…

Would you rather David be a 15 HR guy with a .320 avg or what he is right now? I’ll take the latter…

Seaver784 September 20, 2008 at 12:06 am

true, but in a year or two we’re going to need someone who can play first with some power, and is hopefully on the younger side. D-wright and Beltran can’t produce enough power to steamroll the team in high scoring game. So if murph or evans can get some power in their stroke…and our lineup for the next few years includes beltran, wright, evans, murphy, church, reyes, and f-mart…with a pitching staff of santana, maine, pelf, and neise…..i smell some sort of dynasty possibility?…or maybe not, but one can dream lol

just-mlb September 20, 2008 at 8:40 am

Murphy has the potential to be realllllly good…a different kind of hitter than Wright…he looks like he can hit for a higher average but less power and steals…thats fine…I think he would be PERFECT in the 2 hole between Reyes and Wright

Nick Evans / Tatis / Church might duke it out for RF next year…

Endy is the super sub and I have accepted the fact that my favorite outfielder sux when he is exposed but great in short bursts…

now speaking of 2b….I wonder what happened to Jose Valentin…

Seaver784 September 19, 2008 at 11:57 pm

This is perfect, honestly i think the phillies are going to slow down, when they realize they can’t win the division by praying the mets collapse again. They won 7 in a row before this and now one loss and, they’re back in second. I think the mets have something to prove, so deep down they have way more determination to get it done this year than those “fightin (lucky) phils” had last year. This game is a huge lift for the mets and they’re definitely going to build on it.

and can teams just STOP pitching to ryan howard? the dude is on fire right now, anytime someone is on base and the game is close just walk the guy. Every time i look at the scoreboard he’s just hit a homerun to tie the game or give the phillies the lead…

Ceetar September 20, 2008 at 12:00 am

hell, he’ll probably strike out when you try to walk him, so win-win.

I’d like to point out that Luis Castillo today had as many walks and hits as A. Reyes had in the previous month, spanning the 12 games he played during that stretch.

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 12:07 am

i’d like to point out that argenis reyes came into the game, and suddenly the mets put a rally together. and castillo had one bloop hit, amidst several awful at bats and horrendous range again.

Ceetar September 20, 2008 at 12:11 am

Because Argenis is magic. He makes fielders commit errors. It’s results that count right? That’s what people always say when I point how how limited Manuel is..

Castillo had a walk, SB, hit..

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 12:14 am

why do you love this guy? he is the ONLY starter the mets have that when he plays, the mets have a losing record. Not one other guy has that…….I’ll take my chances with magic and the record.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 12:22 am

Castillo had a hit and walk, which would be a good two weeks for Argenis the Anemic…..Argenis is not a major league baseball player and is beyond a joke at the plate.

Understanding that Castillo is FAR better than A Reyes is not loving Slappy, it is just understanding baseball.

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 12:25 am

is the goal of the game to have individuals with slightly better numbers, or to win games?

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 12:27 am

They are not slightly better numbers, which is easily verifiable….Come on, Argenis’ offense does not exist.

The object is to win games, that is why the utterly irrational Castillo hatred is so maddening.

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 12:30 am

when luis plays, the New York Mets have a losing record. No other starting lineup player has that……I’ll take my chances and go with the results over the fact that castillo used to be good.

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 12:49 am

And that’s his fault??

The bad record that Castillo has when he plays is majorly the factor of the fact that the entire team s*cked till mid June.

Castillo isn’t great, and wouldn’t start on most teams.

However, the fact is, he’s better than Argenis Reyes, and that’s indisputable.

letsclonesantana September 20, 2008 at 6:12 am

entering this game castillo was 2 for 20 in september

he has 1 double and 0 home runs in 41 at bats since coming back

the guy cannot bring home runners from second, and can’t get a sac fly when you need it

if opposing put all seven position players in the infield then he’d never get a hit

dcmetsfan September 20, 2008 at 9:30 am

And yet those numbers are still better than Heinous Reyes’s September numbers. It isn’t proof of being a Castillo lover to point out that he’s better than Reyes. It’s actually kind of sad that Castillo is so sub-par and yet the better second base option at this point.

letsclonesantana September 20, 2008 at 10:01 am

argenis reyes reminds me of rey ordonez

things is, ordonez hit one 340 foot home run every september for three years in a row

maybe we can get some of that in 08?

letsclonesantana September 20, 2008 at 10:07 am

just checked argenis’ stats, and its just SAD

0 for last 21 going back to august

NO doubles in 106 at bats all year

1 home run. i’d bet any amount of money his eyes were closed when he hit that one….

gomets6091 September 20, 2008 at 10:42 am

I’m glad we got Ayala, b/c he’s been serviceable, but how much do you wish we had Anderson Hernandez right now? He’s batting .311/.400/.344 with 13 RBI in 21 games, and 9BB/5K. Nobody’s gonna confuse him with Joe Morgan, but compared to Castillo and Reyes he’s the second coming of Rogers Hornsby, and he plays better defense than either of them. Oh well, can’t say any of us saw this coming, considering his 12 hits in 35 games before this year and his awful minor league stats, but it would have been nice to capitalize on this little hot streak.

MyaGirl September 20, 2008 at 9:59 am

Thank you! Luis Castillo should be playing the rest of the year. Bottom Line!!

rustyjr September 20, 2008 at 11:07 am

i hate to admit it mya – but i do agree – although i love son of slappy (a rey) better by the way any more posters coming on to you??

scottmetsfan September 19, 2008 at 11:59 pm

anybody think that maybe david is having problems because he’s jealous of daniel? maybe sugar pants is unnerved because of all the attention that sugar pants 2 is getting?

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 12:03 am

no, i think he’s his problem is he is trying to be the man at all times…..this year he doesnt need to be, but he’s pressing, pulling, and trying to hit homeruns every at bat.

Seaver784 September 20, 2008 at 12:08 am

i don’t think thats it but that would be hilarious….

scottmetsfan September 20, 2008 at 12:14 am

i don’t think so either, but it must be hard on davie when he’s used to being the number one himbo on the team to watch while a young upstart like murphy suddenly becomes the object of so much positive attention and adulation. plus he’s younger and three inches taller!

letsclonesantana September 20, 2008 at 6:18 am

speaking of positive attention and adulation, i’m really impressed with how MANY heroes this team has put together this year.

early it was wright and church
then reyes started producing
mike pelfrey turns it all around
then delgado started taking HGH again
then beltran gets hot

and all the while we have mini-heroes like murphy, easely, evans

the only truly dominant consistent player we’ve had all year long is, and you guessed it, johan santana

cver September 20, 2008 at 1:00 am

Is that Scottly?

BiggieSmalls September 20, 2008 at 12:00 am

I havent seen a more cerebral hitter than Murph since maybe Don Mattingly or Tony Gwynn

Seriously.. thank you Daniel Murphy for literally saving our season. Way to step up and represent.

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 12:06 am

btw the homerun from howard was after the WORST non called strike 3 i’ve ever seen.

Seaver784 September 20, 2008 at 12:11 am

its a conspiracy, papers sell more if the headlines read collapse 2.0. Its like a car wreck, you just can’t look away

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 12:15 am

is it me or if murphy is to be the starting left fielder or 2nd basemen in 09 he needs to start against both left and right hand pitchers, and only playing him against righty’s hurts the team because he doesnt play enough to make the huge impact he could be making.

Ceetar September 20, 2008 at 12:18 am

Manuel’s obviously grooming him for rookie of the year honors next year. If he plays every day he’ll become ineligible.

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 12:26 am

From wiki: “[The award] was amended to the current standards in 1971 to 130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched or 45 days on the active roster of a major league club (excluding time on the disabled list) before September 1.”

Murphy: 40 games, 99 AB.

(just posting it ’cause I was curious, and I’m sure other people were, too)

letsclonesantana September 20, 2008 at 6:19 am

yes i’m sure #1 on jerry’s mind are the 2009 individual player awards

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Can I ask what must be a dumb question?

Why couldn’t Murph be rookie of the year THIS year? Is it because he hasn’t played enough of the season? If he went over the 130 AB / 45 game limit and thus became ineligible for next year, could he be considered for this year?

I mean, the guy’s got 99 at bats now and his numbers are up there with Manny’s. 99 isn’t a ton, but it’s not exactly a small sample anymore, either.

What are the rules on this?

vbmetfan September 20, 2008 at 12:15 am

im excited like all u guys but lets settle down a little bit, we need to win at least one of the next 2 and then we got the cubies and marlins to deal with…..i think we will be fine but just wanna bring it back down a little……..daivd w is pressing, he is gonna break out soon though…..he is too good of a hitter

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 12:16 am

What’s been good to see is everyone contributing not just one guy carrying the team. Every night one, or a couple, seem to step up and get the big hits, or arms getting the outs when needed.

Delgado has been great since July, Beltran has finally gotten hot, Reyes has got some big hits the past couple of games, Murph comes up big as a pinch hitter. Evans with his limited playing time looked good tongiht. Easley gave us some timely hits over a period of time, etc. And I think Tatis has the highest average for getting that hit with RISP for the year.
And man, even HEILMAN got the needed K tonight….

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 12:23 am

I completely agree.

However, on the unfortunate side, is that every night somebody new seems to screw up…hopefully the people stepping up can continue to compensate for the screw ups.

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 12:24 am

That’s the first time i’ve seen Heilman get props in a loooooong time. Gotta say, tonight was a good time for the Mets to get their first win in Atlanta. I feel good about this series and this road trip in general. We’ve got some rookies to look forward to next year and if we can get a “real bullpen” the Mets have a solid, solid future.. IMHO.

vbmetfan September 20, 2008 at 12:21 am

it is so exciting regardless……i have a great job, great family, but life can still be monotinous sometimes….this stuff makes it fun, seriously….

LL September 20, 2008 at 12:27 am

Great win tonight. The offense looking good and not quitting especially after the poor defense they displayed. I like the fight in the team. Oli looked pretty good. The bullpen held up their end. Even Heilmann got an out (don’t know how he’s even in the game, or on the team). Gosh he’s awful, just got lucky tonight. And Stokes pitching the last 2 innings with a 95+ fastball looking real nice. Let’s keep this up and take the division BABY!!!

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 12:27 am

some mets fans here would take a losing record over a bad fantasy player……it’s sad.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 12:32 am

You are as wrong about this as you are for thinking Argenis the Useless is a major league player at this point.

KinersKornerman September 20, 2008 at 12:40 am

My fave part about tonite was watching that grinch Bobby Cox sulk in the dugout while his raggedy team couldn’t hold down the Mets. Loved the botched rundown with Murph. That kept the inning going. And the Larry Jones strikeout with bases loaded. Priceless.

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 1:10 am

That was Kelly Johnson out of position, and Tavarez getting in the middle of a play where he had no business being, confusing Johnson.

richieb7 September 20, 2008 at 8:02 am

does anyone know if there will be a post game concert at the last game at shea?

steadyeddie September 20, 2008 at 8:53 am

No way, dude! Security will be max and they will want us outta there quick and empty handed (if ya know what I mean).

Jolting Joe September 20, 2008 at 9:16 am

Some thoughts on next week:

Cubs should clinch today or tomorrow. They’ll probably play their bench and won’t extend their starting pitchers against the Mets.

Mets have to clinch by next Saturday so they can save Santana for first playoff game the following Wednesday. If they have to use him for final regular season game, he probably won’t start until the 3rd game of divisional series and will only be used once.

rustyjr September 20, 2008 at 11:03 am

can only hope jolting – and plus zambrano was shelled yesterday

dcmetsfan September 20, 2008 at 9:36 am

Here’s the thing that drove a little nuts last night (aside from not using Parnell. Get that kid on a milk carton): the announcers harping on the bullpen. I’m not trying to be pollyannish about this, but first, it gets repetitive and slightly annoying after a while. Second, even though the bullpen causes heartburn, it isn’t as bad it was a year ago. The specialty guys – Feliciano, Show, and Smith – have generally been good, and certainly more reliable than a year ago. Stokes has generally been reliable, and Ayala, other than Sunday’s game, has been good.

Again, I’m not saying I’m perfectly satisfied with their performance, but other than Heilman and Sanchez, it isn’t the horror show that we seem to want to make it out to be. Last year, NO ONE was getting the job done in the pen and every game was an adventure. This year, at least I have some degree of confidence in the pen. Sure, it takes about 6 pitchers per game, but I don’t really mind if they wind up nailing down a game.

OPP is Metsmerizing September 20, 2008 at 9:45 am

Who is scheduled to start on sunday?

Philnym31 September 20, 2008 at 10:12 am

Santana is currently lined up for it, but let’s hope that the Mets can clinch before then. If Johan goes the last day of the regular season, he will most likely be regulated to Game 3 of the NLDS and just that one start. Instead, if Johan doesn’t go on the last day of the year, he will be able to pitch 2 out of the 5 possible games in first round.

Philnym31 September 20, 2008 at 10:14 am

My bad dude. I just realized you were asking of this Sunday when I answered about next Sunday. Pelfrey is going tomorrow against James Parr.

rustyjr September 20, 2008 at 11:00 am

i thought olie was scheduled for sun – santana only if it were a must win game

0h the ag0ny September 20, 2008 at 10:40 am

daniel murphy is cerebral.

he is the number 2 hitter that we havent had in 2 yrs

the hitter that protects REYES as well as drive him in or even set up wright && the others on a consistent basis.

he makes us so much better. its been 90pa .. please let this kid be for real!

reyes, wright, beltran, pelfrey, santana, murphy!, smith, Niese? evans?

wata core! =]

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 11:26 am

The kid is not for real. Sorry, it is not possible. Because the Mets have no farm system. They traded it all away for the pitcher the Yanks didn’t want. Therefore, the Mets can never have a successful young player. Ever again.

(/sarcasm)

rustyjr September 20, 2008 at 11:29 am

lol damn you oman and tony b damn you all too hell – (some fans march – july ‘08″)

ARE YOU F’ING KIDDING ME?!? That is it, they are off my baseball bookmarks for the rest of this week. Make that season.

dominicanboy08 September 20, 2008 at 11:58 am

BTW guys, who is this new black guy in the mets dugout? is he a new coach or something?

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Six words: Willie Randolph, Make a Wish Foundation

BigPelf4prez September 20, 2008 at 12:36 pm

He looks like Willie. It amazing. I noticed it too.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 1:06 pm

Last night the Marlins players asked for Brett Myers to cover up the tattoo on his left arm before the second inning. Quote from Myers:

‘“They were trying to get into my head. They don’t want to get in my head. Not too many people have been successful getting in there, besides myself.”

Since this was Myers worst career start, giving up 10 runs before they got him out of there, maybe it was somewhat successful.

Just food for thought for when we play the Marlins. Wonder if they’ll come up with similar tricks to gain some advantage…..

toomanyuniforms September 20, 2008 at 2:05 pm

There’s quite a bit of room in his head, I’m sure.

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 1:30 pm

Here’s what the lineup should look like for the rest of the season:

SS – J. Reyes
LF – Murphy
3B – Wright
1B – Delgado
CF – Beltran
RF – Church
C – Schneider
2B – Reyes

You can flip-flop Delgado and Beltran, and maybe Church and Castro if he’s in instead of Schneider. But you can live with Aregenis’ bat if Dan Murphy keeps producing from the two-hole, and now you’ve got a legit right handed bat on the bench (Evans), a good guy to work out a walk on the bench (Castillo), and Endy as a late-inning defensive sub for Murphy.

Now for how best to use the Mets bullpen:
Pray.
That is how best to use the Mets bullpen. Thank you.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 1:42 pm

Not bad except for having a triple-A player in the 8 hole playing 2nd. This lineup has a complete black hole from spot 7 on, and the way Church has been playing, from the 6 hole down.

That’s why major league managers put Castillo or (Church) in the 2 hole and have something going on down below, like Evans or Murphy (for now) hitting 6th or 7th.

Argenis Reyes is not a major league player.

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 1:43 pm

A. Reyes is in for defense. Castillo’s range is severely compromised these days. And you’re calling Schneider’s production over the last two months a black hole? Someone hasn’t been paying attention.

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 1:45 pm

Seriously, are you Luis Castillo masquerading as Dave Kingman? Honestly. I think Castillo has more value coming of off the bench then A. Reyes, and Luis is a defensive liability these days.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 1:50 pm

I do appreciate that you think that Slappy has value off the bench, as most Slappy haters/Argenis lovers think Slappy is Satan.

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Oh, and Murphy is in the 2-spot because he makes contact better than almost anyone on the team right now. Church is swinging and missing too often, even though he tore it up from the 2-hole before his concussions.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Dude, I am not sure which stats you are reading, but Schneider’s show a very average offensive player. One two homer game does not a star make.

And Argenis Reyes is not Ozzie Smith out there, and Castillo, with his diminished range, is a major league player, which Argenis is not.

Argenis lovers enjoy him the next week, as this is the last time he will see the major leagues.

toomanyuniforms September 20, 2008 at 2:03 pm

We will enjoy him the next week, as will you, because the Mets will be WINNING.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 2:07 pm

That sounds good to me……

toomanyuniforms September 20, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Indeed — Slappy vs. Ar-heinous is not going to make or break this club. It’s our Big Four and our bullpen.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 2:14 pm

You are so right about that. Really.

And thank you for Ar-heinous, which is absolutely hilarious!!

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Well, no, he’s not an offensive star, but he’s good enough to hit 7th. Here’s Schneider’s last month:
AVG: .300
OBP: .328
RBI: 12
HR: 5
18 out of 60

That’s not bad. Castillo’s last month:
AVG: .195
OBP: .283
RBI: 2
Runs scored: 3
8 out of 41

Not great. And then, the abysmal last-month numbers of A. Reyes:
AVG: .000
OBP: .087
RBI: 0
Runs scored: 2
0 out of 21

So you have a point. I say that neither of them are turning the world on fire, so play one of the two for defense, so that’s why I’d go with Argenis. Still, if he’s giving you worse at-bats than a bullpen pitcher, you may be right and have no choice put to play Castillo.

I’d still put Luis in the 8 hole and Murphy in the 2.

Honestly, I don’t care who plays as long as they perform and the Mets win. I’d love to see Castillo be Castillo, because that would be nothing but good.

By the way, here’s Easely’s last month:
AVG: .333
OBP: .388
RBI: 7
HR: 1
Runs: 5
15 for 45.

So I guess we all know who we WISH was playing.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Definitely a fine analysis, thanks for taking the time. I do think Schneider is good enough to bat 7th, I just think that with the way Church has been hitting, Church/Schneider/Argenis/Pitcher is a really weak last four, which is why I would split it up and put Slappy 2nd and someone else down in the lower mix. Slappy can draw a walk, and that’s why he has at least scored a fair amount of runs this year.

And wow, Argenis and Slappy’s numbers are really, really scary.

Let’s hope Easley is working hard at rehab as I write this. He wants to play in the postseason badly…..

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 3:33 pm

I didn’t realize that A. Reyes was such A. Mess. So let’s see Castillo.

Change that to “Beltran is the natural” and “DMurph is really good.”

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Not bad except for the silly and unnecessary criticism of Wright, who did have a fairly good rbi hit in the 9th last night. To go with his earlier rbi double which tied the game.

KinersKornerman September 20, 2008 at 2:58 pm

you’re absolutely right. but it’s a Metblog tradition to criticize Wright unnecessarily.

Phillies in NYC September 20, 2008 at 2:17 pm

toomanyuniforms September 20, 2008 at 2:23 pm

The chinbeards? It’s the Phils’ team aesthetic. They look like they dipped their chins in syrup and iron filings.

racemccloud September 20, 2008 at 2:40 pm

toomanyuniforms September 20, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Eh, what else do you expect him to do while lounging around his tiny Phillies-themed apartment in his Chase Utley Underoos?

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 2:59 pm

There were Mets fans posting crap all over beerleaguer last night, can’t really blame ‘em for wanting to come over here.

Actually, reading their comments is pretty hilarious. You want to talk about fans who know how to suffer, they have got it down!

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 3:05 pm

They just came off a 7-game winning streak and lost one game to a team on an 8-game winning streak. Neither the depressed martyr act nor the taunts from gleefully rude Met fans are warranted.

But it is kind of fun, isn’t it?

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Murphy needs to play more. And I hope he will learn to play 2nd base this winter @ the instructional league and just plug him in at second next year and forget about it. With his mental approach and baseball snarts years beyond his age, I have no doubt the kid will turn into a decent 2nd basemen. While Evans has done a nice job, he is still batting a full 100 points lower than Murphy!

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 2:57 pm

*** smarts**

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 3:02 pm

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 4:30 pm

To think we thought we didn’t have any talent down in the Minors. This kid has the makings of a good-quality major League hitter for year to come. If F-Mart lives up to the Hype, we should be sitting pretty with Dwright, Reyes, F-Mart. Murphy, Pelfrey, Niese etc. Not bad for an origanization that was considered weak in the farm system.

if both the Mets and Phillies have clinched by next Sunday, but NL East is still in play, do we risk sending Santana out to win NL East but only getting him for game 3?

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 12:33 pm

jammer: If we’ve already clinchec by next Sunday, is it the division or WC? Either way to me, the better bet is to have Santanna in two games in the first post season round, pitch someone else on the last day of the season and hope they can get us a win.
