Quote: Scoreboard Watching
By Brandon Eddy - Sep 19, 2008 8:49 am

Thanks to Geovany Soto’s three-run shot into the Wrigley Field Bleachers, the Mets’ path back to the playoffs got a little bit smoother according to Bart Hubbuch at the New York Post.

Prior to the Mets 7-2 win over the Nationals, the clubhouse erupted into cheers and high-fives after Soto’s home run tied the game and the Cubs went on to win in the 12th.

Jerry Manuel on September scoreboard watching, as quoted by Hubbuch, said:

“It’s important that we’re scoreboard-watching and trying to do all we can to win to get into the postseason … That’s exciting. I applaud them for that.”

…i became a huge soto fan after that home run…i also felt a little better about the mets bullpen after watching the brewers’ pen blew a four-run lead with two outs in the ninth inning…

That was huge. It gives us a little cushion, and now we can focus back on 1st place.

  2. This team just needs to focus on beating the likes of Jo-Jo Reyes, Omar Infante (the cleanup hitter), Martin Prado, and Gregor Blanco. If they can’t do that, they don’t deserve to win the Wild Card, much less the Division.

They should have payback on their minds from last week. Plus, it would be good to have Atlanta heading into Philly on a 6 game losing streak. They will be due to win.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

i disagree…we have been shut down by the likes of odalis and lannon..we have been swept by the padres….we have lost at 3.5 game lead… and we still have a shot at the division. Sometimes teams have good days..Atlanta just got swept by philly. We are playing them in Atlanta(i get shivers just thinking about that stadium..bad memories). I agree we should be able to beat them..but at the same token we should have been able to sweep the nats. Either or i believe is not an indication as to our worthyness to have a playoff berth or not. The year that this team has had..they have shown their merit imo and they deserve the post season.

      • I agree with what you’re saying. Atlanta has been a house of horrors, as I tried to explain to people weeks ago when looking ahead, they tried to laugh these games off as easy. If there is one thing you have learned (if you followed this team in the late 90’s and early this decade), it’s that games vs. Atlanta are never easy.

At the same time, this team is a shell of their former selves. It’s not Andruw Jones, John Smoltz, Tim Hudson, Edgar Renteria, Marcus Giles, Mark Texeira, Mike Remlinger, and John Rocker anymore. They are trying out rookies and others. We need to put pedal to the metal here and do to them what Philly did.

  3. Dirtysanchez says:

lol best believe i was scoreboard watching with them. This is totally a different scenario than last year guys. The thing that is interesting tho is with the nosedive of the brewers..and astros have been shut down…the wildcard might come from the NL east and that might work to our advantage this weekend. The marlins are i believe tied with the astros for a Wildcard berth. They will be EXTRA motivated to win and put some merit to an amazing year for them(unlike the braves and bobby cox saying that he might “help the mets” against the phills……..yea right). We just have to do our part against atlanta but we stand a chance here guys.

    • dcmetsfan says:

Yeah, the Marlins are not a dead team. If they sweep the Phils, they’re two out of the wild card. So they will definitely be motivated this weekend.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

yea something the braves didnt have facing the braves..this weekend would be a good time to look to gain some ground

      • patrick says:

I don’t disagree the Marlins have to be there to play, a good weekend and they are still very much alive.

But sweeping the Phillies does not put them two out of the wild card, it all depends on what the Mets and Brewers do.

If the Marlins sweep the Phillies, and the Mets were swept by Atlanta, while the Brewers even only won 2 of 3 vs the Reds they’d look like this…

        Brew 86-70
        Phils 86-70
        Mets 85-70
        Fish 83-72

Mets need 2 of 3 badly this weekend.

        • dcmetsfan says:

But sweeping the Phillies does not put them two out of the wild card, it all depends on what the Mets and Brewers do.

True. I guess I’m already anticipating another Brewers’ series loss. What’s funny is that they’re playing the Reds, and correct me if my memory is faulty, but wasn’t it the Brewers who beat Cincy 2 out of 3 in the final series of 1999 to help the Mets get to a play-in game?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

Yea good point pat. All i was trying to say is well i was looking to the brewers to help us out by handing philly a loss..that didnt happen. Since atlanta kicked us in the you know what i was thinking they would do the same to the phills…that didnt happen. I am now looking to the marlins who still technically still has a stake on this thing and that motivation to win and at least play the mets on the last series of the year for a wildcard berth might be the help we have been looking for.

        • Nate W. says:

The Brewers are all messed up. They are throwing TBA vs. Cueto on Saturday, and Sabathia is going up against the hottest pitcher in baseball Bronson Arroyo. (yes that felt was weird to say, but its true)

They could be eliminated on Sat and arent throwing Sabathia on three days rest…

Manny Parra is likely the TBA saturday starter and he has a 7.30 ERA against the Reds.

Now that is a team without a plan right there.

  4. patrick says:

as it is with every game at this point, tonight becomes the Mets season

  5. CitizenSnips says:

I was gamedaying that Cubs game and for some reason I was thinking “Soto’s gotta prove his RotY status with a homer here” and sure enough there it was. Also I have no idea why but the Phillies just refuse to lose. It’s frustrating seeing them down by 4 then suddenly they’re up by 2.

    • ravi3 says:

Me too…once DeRosa got on base, I kinda had a feeling that Soto was gonna do something…1 pitch later, tie game.

  6. therealsince86 says:

I was just thinking and no matter if I can’t stand anything about him and hate the team he plays for, should Lidge get some votes for Cy Young? 38/38 on save attempts with a 1.98 Has there been a pitcher on a contending team that is more valuable to their team? You could say Santana for us but considering that the Phillies weakness should be their pen and it has became their most consistant strength….. Again, I hate him but imagine where we would be with 38/38 in saves and give the Phillies Wagner back. We would have a 10 game lead.

    • dcmetsfan says:

Good point. It helps that there isn’t a particularly strong candidate that’s a starter.

BTW, speaking of the Cy Young, it’s remarkable that (arguably) the three best pitchers in the NL have all been hamstrung by playing for crappy teams or having crappy bullpens behind them. If either Lincecum, Santana, or Peavy had any support whatsoever, they’d be running away with it.

      • Bluerock says:

nah…i think its lincecum all the way

his stats are just a level higher than anybody else’s

i’m not a big fan of taking into account how good a player’s team is to determine whether or not he deserves to be an MVP or a CY Yound award winner

i’d have no problem giving a Cy young to a guy on a crappy team who has an era almost a half a point lower than his next best competitor, the best k/ip, the lowest whip, etc…even if his record isn’t that great because his team can’t hit or the bullpen blows his leads

        • dcmetsfan says:

I totally agree with you in principle, but unfortunately a lot of voters don’t see it that way. They’ll look at record first, and then they might start looking at some of the other stats. I think Lincecum should win it, and he probably has enough wins to impress the voters, but the case would be easier if he played on a better team.

Long story short, there’s too many John Kruk types determining these awards.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

agreed real. I dont think he will get cy young consideration since theres a few guys you can put ahead of that but it has been no question the key to philly. 38 save attempts…had he not been perfect we would be alot more comfortable right now..but again closers are overrated.

  7. CaseStreet says:

    1. Murphy in the two hole is awesome.
    2. What’s going to solve David’s slump? A day off? Moving the lineup around? No sex for a week?
    3. Hopefully Church keeps the bat going.

    • therealsince86 says:

Check out Wrights stats for September and for the last week. He is only in a mini-slump and I expect him to come out of it this weekend. Some of you guys act like he has been stinking it up for 10 games or something.

      • CaseStreet says:

No, I know he’s had some good days, but he’s looked pretty bad the past few days.

In the last 7 games he’s batting .241 with 9 strikeouts in 29 At Bats and only 2 walks.

I know David’s the man, and he’s going through a rough patch, but it’s just hard to see him up there like that, especially when we need him the most.

  8. RockfordMetsFan says:

Let’s not cheer Soto too loudly or too long. The Cubs come into town next week, and we might not be too happy to see him.

  9. efremp says:

Dont forget soto is coming to shea next week….We are no longer a fan of his then

  10. Gasface77 says:

““It’s important that we’re scoreboard-watching and trying to do all we can to win to get into the postseason … That’s exciting. I applaud them for that.””

Can you imagine Willie ever making this quote?

    • Nate W. says:

I’d like to know how scoreboard watching is one of the things they can do to try and get into the postseason. How does that help exactly?

If the Brewers had won that game the Mets should have played the game with the same intensity and attention to detail. But I think they would have been tight.

The Cubs winning is good, the scoreboard watching can be a good or bad thing depending on who wins…

  11. Furioso says:

The idea of our pen pitching to your boy Soto and Co. absolutely terrifies me

  12. Bluerock says:

anyone know about murphy’s ability to play second base? i’d love to see him at 2nd and FMart at LF next year…

i know he played a little in the past, i don’t know if he’s got the body build / athleticism to play the position at a high level in the big leagues…

if he could, it would be a pretty nice lineup next yr:

    reyes.murphy.wright.beltran.delgado.church.martinez.schnieder.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

he has 17 games in the minors with 3 errors….thats it for exp at 2b.

      • HitTheSinkerBall says:

I heard he is going to play winter ball this year at second base. Next year him at second would be a good thing.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

yea they are but i dont feel that is enough experiance to play 2b. Some people would disagree but i feel he would benifit more from being an understudy at 2b next year than to just hand him the job and its either sink or swim. Thats just my opinion

      • Bluerock says:

i’m sure you can find a 17 game stretch where wright or reyes has had 3 errors…maybe even ozzie smith…not exactly a huge statistical sample

but i know that i am reaching…he doesn’t look like a 2nd baseman, at 6′3 / 210….i guess maybe 1st base would be more realistic after next year…

murphy can play LF next year and FMart can be called up in 2010 at which point murphy can go to 1b, fmart probably needs another yr in the minors anyway

        • Dirtysanchez says:

I see evans(if we are going to stay with inhouse promotions) taking over eventually at 1b with murphy eventually taking over at 2b and fmart(no time soon) eventually taking OF.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

well first off..martinez is NOT going to start at OF in the majors. Given the injury plagued short season i expect the mets to have him stay in the minors and develop more. I think in regards to murphy he will be the understudy to whoever the mets have playing 2b next year. Pagan will most likely get the LF position based off experiance defensivly over tatis and he swings an ok bat. Tatis will be on the bench to spell OF and Power RH PH. Murph i would expect will take over 2b eventually but i dont see him starting next year. Evans will be on the bench and will spell delgado at 1b or the outfield. Endy will be here for defensive purposes like usual. The lineup will look like it has been for a while..
      ss-reyes
      lf-pagan
      3b-wright
      1b-delgado
      cf-beltran
      rf-church
2b-??(i dont know only because castillo seemed to express some discontent with being benched over awful reyes)
      c-schnider

      • CaseStreet says:

so the bench is tatis, endy, murphy, evans, and castro?

No easley? I think you need easley to play 2b and ss.

        • Nate W. says:

Send Evans to AAA to play 1B everyday as he is not as accomplished a hitter as Murphy and could use the 500 AB’s to develop.

Easley or A. Reyes as the bench SS/pinch runner.

        • Nate W. says:

btw, Marlon Anderson has a contract for next year…

          just something more to consider

        • Dirtysanchez says:

good god your right….We can do w/o him thats for sure..

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

if pagan is our lf next year…we have some serious problems

        • Dirtysanchez says:

because you would rather spend god knows how much on manny???
There is nothing wrong with the production we got from murphy/tatis/pagan/evans…why spend the money when we have more IMPORTANT needs that should be addressed first

      • Nate W. says:

…what if old washed up Delgado is the Delgado that comes to spring training next year instead of the good rejuvenated Delgado?

This is going to be one mediocre lineup if that is the case.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

Then he will heat up in the second half and carry the team on his back…boy does that sound familiar…
look lets not play the what if game and cross that bridge when we get to it. Lets stay optimistic that delgado will come back next year and continue to do well as he seems he is healthy
