When did the “YA GOTTA BELIEVE!” start showing up in the pre-games? I’m a fan.

shannon September 20, 2008 at 6:55 pm

a few days ago…and me too. nice Mike

Prismo September 20, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Cubs clinched the Central.

Brewers losing their game.

The rest of the season for the Mets lies only on their own shoulders.

Ceetar September 20, 2008 at 6:39 pm

As it has for weeks.

Castillo back to back! Although 7th is one of the worst places to bat him.

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 6:51 pm

You see the Cubs celebrating? I want that. Hopefully the players feel the same way too. It’s time to take care of business, fellas.

imtiredofguiseppefranco September 20, 2008 at 6:38 pm

pedro just give us 5 or 6 innings with 3 or less runs. thats all im asking

shannon September 20, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Perdo Martinez, huh? lol

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 6:56 pm

YA GOTTA BELIEVE!!!!!! Pedro just give us 6 good innings. Try to go the 1st inning with out giving up runs. Or 1st pitch home run. If we keep scoring and score around 5-7 runs we should get that W.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 6:59 pm

here we go petey!!!! lets go mets!!!!!!!!!!!!

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 7:05 pm

While looking at this lineup I kind of got an idea for the 2010 mets lineup

1. Reyes
2. F-Mart
3. Murphy
4. Wright
5. Beltran
6. Church
7. Carp
8. New Catcher or whomever

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 7:09 pm

actually Evans might be the 1st baseman instead of Carp

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Rickie Weeks leadoff HR in 9th makes it 4-3 Reds

none out

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Give it everything you’ve got left tonight, Pedro. Everyone’s behind you.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:12 pm

tough start there

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:15 pm

man…where’s cbp when you need it?

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Brewers have bases loaded with two out in the 9th

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:16 pm

BREWERS LOSE

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:17 pm

prince fielder struck out with the bases loaded…beer makers lose

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Fatboy Fielder K’s with the bases loaded, Brewers lose!

LGM, Make this a 3 1/2 game lead!

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:18 pm

well…there goes the perfecto

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:19 pm

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 7:19 pm

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:20 pm

holy crap that was hilarious…

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:21 pm

CMON PEDRO!

WARM YOUR ARM UP FASTER! We can’t go through this every time your start

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Crap.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Seriously, does this guy ever come through for the Mets?

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:22 pm

2005

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:23 pm

You mean when he sht the bed the the last quarter of the season?

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:24 pm

I guess.

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 7:23 pm

let me guess, it’s because he has no heart and no guts, right?

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:24 pm

no it’s because he’s over the hill, overpaid, and blows.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:22 pm

poop

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Do not re-sign Pedro Martinez.

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Better get Figueroa up……..

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:22 pm

jeez, pedro is such a shadow of what he used to be. How pathetic that he refuses to step up in big spots.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:25 pm

“refuses” is a bit harsh. it’s just frustrating. he’s a crafty, smart pitcher. he should use that to outsmart the hitter. to paraphrase hank steinbrenner’s suggestion to mike mussina, it might be time for him to become jamie moyer.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:23 pm

What are the Mets going to do about this clown if they make the playoffs? Are they really going to forfeit every fourth game?

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:23 pm

If we managed with Glavine and Maine…we’ll find a way.

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Glavine and Maine and pray for rain

JefJarrett September 20, 2008 at 7:27 pm

You DL him and tell him to stay home…..worry about the rest when the time comes.

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Pedro, you f–kin blow

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Pedro, do us all a favor, and just retire. Nothing worse than a once great pitcher who is now a joke. Anyone else remember Steve Carlton at the end? Ouch.

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Wow – Both Cubbies and Rays are into postseason today

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:27 pm

bandwagon fans throughout the country are rejoicing…

Prismo September 20, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Pedro is killing our rotation, and there’s NOTHING they can do about it. What an awful situation.

Darth Manuel September 20, 2008 at 7:24 pm

If Pedro can’t pitch a quality start tonight,, He should be taken out of the rotation….. This is it for me.. 81mph.. give me a break..

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Well, maybe if he gets bombed enough, tonight will be the last time we see Pedro.

He can take the $45 million he practically stole from us and go sit under his banyan tree with his midget friend and cry nostalgically about his Red Sox days.

I wish some of the misguided anti-Slappy and Wright-isn’t-clutch sentiments could be directed at Pedro and his 2 and 1/2 years of injuries, mediocrity, and half-hearted attempts at rehab and staying in shape.

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Depends on whether you believe that Pedro brought winning baseball along with him.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:27 pm

I’m sure that’s why Beltran decided to take the most money

JefJarrett September 20, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Well, he tried to take less, but the Yankees pa$$ed.

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Gary Cohen disagrees with you.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:32 pm

And how Gary Cohen can repeat that utter nonsense is truly amazing.

Who is Beltran’s agent? That answers this question.

Beltran is a Met because we offered far more money than anyone else. And he would be a Met without Pedro and his 27 wins for 45 mil and 2 and 1/2 years of uselessness and disappointment.

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:34 pm

I could honestly care less about the money, if we were a small market club, sure.

4 years of Pedro wasn’t a bad contract, if we had signed him to 5-6, then it would have been awful.

If we had the option to go back and decide whether to sign him again I think we’d do it in a heartbeat. We’ve had competitive successful teams since we signed Pedro Martinez and that’s all that I care about.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Well, you definitely make a good point about doing it over again. I was thrilled when we signed Pedro and would definitely do it again, and I thought he was great in 2005.

I do think though that we would have had pretty much the same competitive and good teams without Pedro the last 3 years though.

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Likely, but who knows.

I’m happy with the last 4 years (give or take a Wainwright curve) and I’d say most fans are too.

We’ll see if Pedro has any clout in the international market as we’re definitely spending more money in the D.R. now as shown by the new baseball academy.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Yeah, I agree about the last 4 years. I guess my opinion is colored by disappointment after how great Pedro was in 2005 and how badly I wanted to see him hoist us a trophy just like he did in Boston.

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:46 pm

It’s not too late, maybe he can hoist the trophy after he runs in from the bullpen.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Ryn05, that is hilarious and I thank you for it.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:27 pm

too bad he hasn’t been around when most of the winning has taken place

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:27 pm

I think Reyes, Wright, and Beltran brought winning baseball with them. I do not buy into the Pedro-Changed-the-Culture-of-the-Organization mantra.

The team was changing with all of the others, and with the diseased and funereal Howe gone, and I still ask very respectfully—how different would the last four years have been without Pedro?? I mean really……

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 7:25 pm

pedro you are a loser

Hit The Weights Zeile September 20, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Unless by some miracle pedro can go 5-6 with 3 runs or less allowed he should not start again unless the mets have clinched.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:26 pm

hopefully Pedro does us all a favor and comes up with some BS injury to take the rest of the year off

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 7:26 pm

nice play, jose

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:26 pm

well…at least they got an out….

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 7:27 pm

i can’t believe we are going to be losing 3-0 after the first inning to the braves.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:28 pm

I can believe anything when this guy pitches

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:27 pm

Mets are going to need LOTS of runs tonight!

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:28 pm

There is no way Pedro should be in the post season rotation. As*uming we make the post season.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:28 pm

There is no way Pedro should be in the post season rotation. As*uming we make the post season.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:28 pm

wow…joe blanton struck out the side in the bottom of the 1st…

nice k petey

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:29 pm

The problem is, you can’t just put this sht Pedro start into a vacuum because the bullpen is going to be completely blown out

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Exactly

JefJarrett September 20, 2008 at 7:30 pm

You put Knight in there if Pedro can’t go anymore and just tell him he’s going until the 7th.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Leave Pedro in for 200 pitches, if you’re going to lose you’re going to lose, but keep the damage to this one game

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:29 pm

extra poop

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Pedro………….Please just go away…..

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Thanks for the early hole, Pedro.

Flushing_is_Burning September 20, 2008 at 7:30 pm

sigh* a typical pedro start.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Fck Pedro, keep him out there until his arm falls off, he’s not going to come back next year

Darth Manuel September 20, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Is Neise available tonight.. Get him warmed up..!!

JefJarrett September 20, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Isn’t Neise pitching this week sometime?

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 7:30 pm

3-0 Atlanta. Thanks Pedro, you money grubbing @ss-hole

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:31 pm

this is just ridiculous….he is pitching batting practice.

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 7:34 pm

of course. thats all he can throw. he gives up 4 hits, 3 runs, but strikes out 2 batters. doesn’t make any sense. i wish we would just get rid of him.

das320 September 20, 2008 at 7:31 pm

GET FIGUEROA UP

stilltheEWM September 20, 2008 at 7:31 pm

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 7:31 pm

if the score is 6-0 after the first inning i will die

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:32 pm

I would love to grab a bat and take my hacks against Pedro.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Well……here’s hoping Pedro gets it together and we can get a slew of runs here….

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 7:32 pm

congrats pedro. i didn’t know you had it in you to get out of the first inning.

Flushing_is_Burning September 20, 2008 at 7:32 pm

OMG!!!!!

apingicer September 20, 2008 at 7:33 pm

If Niese has another strong outing, you need to seriously consider making him the #4 starter in the playoffs. Pedro can no longer be counted on to be a reliable starter.

stilltheEWM September 20, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Playoffs??? You’re talking playoffs!

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Santana, Ollie, Pelfrey, and Figs. That’s gotta be the playoff rotation. I don’t give a sht about Pedro’s ego. You can’t give up games.

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 7:34 pm

figs? neise is the better option. leave figs in the bullpen.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:34 pm

He’s 21, I don’t want to put too much pressure on the kid

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 7:36 pm

well he as to learn sooner or later.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:34 pm

we just need to put up some runs and not get discouraged by pedro’s inability to step up in a big spot. They just need to be patient, be smart and score some runs.

metsforever September 20, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Pedro can’t be allowed to pitch again. He is a Hall of Famer and an all time great, but there is not that much room for error. Milwaukee is trying to help, but we can’t count on the scoreboard

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Pedro is done, scratch him from the rotation and put in someone else. Possibly even Maine. A more realistic person would be Figgy or Knight.

Flushing_is_Burning September 20, 2008 at 7:35 pm

can they take him out of the game now?? I don’t think I can take another inning of this!!

DavidDog September 20, 2008 at 7:35 pm

just got back from the football game in Chapel Hill, you wanna see a team of chokers, google “tarheels football”— they make the mets look like the baseball incarnation of Rocky Balboa…

that said, and i said this when he had that brief string of successful outings, Pedro can NOT be pitching for this team right now. sorry, i like the guy, but the only way he can help us right now is by not playing. just another terrible bust of a deal for the mets, hate to say it. …but we gotta move on

mookie September 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Whats up fellow tar heel. It was a tough loss, be I think the football team is getting better.

DavidDog September 20, 2008 at 7:45 pm

they are getting better, and it was great to see kenan packed and pumped up– but they should have had today’s game -easily. they dominated for 3 quarters, then just melted and blew it.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:35 pm

No one has the B…….ALLS on the Mets to deny Pedro a spot on the Playoof rotation.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:36 pm

if this clown keeps pitching it may not be an issue

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 7:35 pm

If we make it in the post season…
First round is best of 5. You make sure Santana has the 1st and 5th start. If Santana gets a win in both, you only need 1 out of the other 3 starters to come away with a Win. Not bad odds. Putting all our eggs in Santana’s basket though.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Good basket to put them in.

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Guys, this is going to be a long game.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Not if we keep having 1-2-3 innings it’s not.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Come on, Beltran….that wasn’t in the script. We need a string of hits here.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:38 pm

ok, that was a waste of an inning.

Furioso September 20, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Look at this worthless piece of garbage Pedro.

He puts the club in a huge early hole and that’s it.

This worthless money-stealing piece of washed up trash MUST be removed from the rotation now.

This is the last pitch this worthless piece of sh*t throws for this franchise.

I don’t give a sh*t who replaces him. IT CANNOT BE WORSE

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Put Parnell in. He’s a starter. He can’t do worse than Pedro.

dwright57 September 20, 2008 at 7:40 pm

you need to relax…….

pedro has a better chance of figuring something out than knight pitching six scoreless in the NLDS

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I think it’s pretty clear who the real “useless pice of sh*t” is…(Furioso)

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:42 pm

don’t bother dude…that’s his schtick

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Well, at least we can be glad Furioso woke up in a good mood today.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:39 pm

He’s at least 2-years past his usefullness.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I never liked him, ever since the the Mets played Boston in ‘05. He spent the whole weekend with a “I wanted to be in Boston but they fcked me” attitude and then promptly got his a.ss kicked. The first meaningful game he wins for the Mets will be his first.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 7:40 pm

You think Omar would have the balls to not let Pedro start a playoff game if they actually make it? Please!

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I think Pedro Martinez may have taken the “least trusted, most despised pitcher on the team” title over from Aaron Heilman. And that ain’t easy.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm

The only difference between Pedro and Pavano at this point, is that Pavano actually wins some games.

1985Mets September 20, 2008 at 7:41 pm

To all:

Dont WORRY, we will win the division and will go to the WORLD SERIES. LETS npt stress this out….

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Maybe the World Series, but I don’t see the Mets winning the division. Not with a three man rotation and no off days

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 7:55 pm

I’m not feeling too good about this one guys. Let’s just hope the fish can win down in Florida.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:42 pm

phew, got a break there…he was definitely safe.

Dafatone80 September 20, 2008 at 7:42 pm

The umpire seems to be pretty generous.

Pedro looks the same as always. His stuff is moving well, he’s looking great, and then he gets hit.

Throws another 4 pitches, looks great, and then gets hit.

It’s the 1 out of 5 pitches that don’t work that get him.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:45 pm

hat’s your typical line when you don’t have a 95+ mph fastball anymore.

DavidDog September 20, 2008 at 7:49 pm

or an 85mph fastball…

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:44 pm

pedro is this september’s version of glavine. coming up extremely small. he owes his teammates an apology for some of his recent starts.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:44 pm

at least Glavine had his moments last season and actually showed up for the playoffs. Pedro is a step below Glavine in my book

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:45 pm

and yes, I meant playoffs in ‘06

rigsay September 20, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Lets see Parnell. This is his time.

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Mets are 21-25 in Pedro starts since 2006. 38-39 overall in Pedro’s 77 starts as a Met.

Interesting.

domosnacks5 September 20, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Sorry I’m late tonight boys, I was too busy playing Larry Flint’s JERRY MANUEL VIDEO GAME…

You know it’s the oNE WHERE UR U BUT UR JERRY BUT U THINK UR U BUT UR REALLY JERRY AND JERRY MIGHT PROBABLY BE U BUT U DONT KNO THAT BUT U DO EVERYTHING THAT JERRY DOES

i just finished up the mission where jose reyes calls u, heres a little of the dialogue:

JERRY- UMMMM THIS SOUNDS LIKE JOSE REYES?
JOSE REYES- THIS IS JOSE REYES
JERRY- UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OK

just easing the mood, we’ll get those runs back

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 7:49 pm

More and more, I’m beginning to believe this game might be more entertaining than watching an actual Mets game. I mean, neither one makes sense, but at least this one is funny if you’re, like, really messed up.

Dafatone80 September 20, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Wow. Braves announcer. Shut Up.

“That cost the Braves a run! No doubt Anderson scores from 1st with two out! Dang it!”

Announcers shouldn’t be saying dang it. It sounds stupid. And if Anderson were called safe (which he was, clearly), there’d be one out, and he might be holding.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 7:45 pm

He is a shadow of himself, it remind me of a great boxer refusing to hang it up. He hasn’t have a 1-2-3 first inning since 2005

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Pedro IV – this is the one where he fights the Russian, right?

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:49 pm

if he dies….he dies

rigsay September 20, 2008 at 7:45 pm

The Pedro signing is one of the reasons everyone hates the Mets/loves to make fun of them. The Red Sox knew he was done 4 yrs ago.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:47 pm

maybe I could take it better if everyone didn’t give him the Brett Favre treatment

domosnacks5 September 20, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Wait, the Brett Favre treatment? ESPN doesn’t make a SPECIAL BREAKING REPORT everytime Pedro takes a dump…

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:47 pm

That’s a bit of a stretch.

I’d imagine it’s the media coverage, over-hype of players, large payroll and ability to sign players other fans wanted for their team.

rigsay September 20, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Anyone just hear Darling stuuuuttter?

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:48 pm

t t t t today junior!

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 7:47 pm

at this point im looking forward to pulling him and throwing our bullpen out there. at least they can have the occasional inning without getting hit. just stinks cause weve got no days off and looks like pedro is going out early. bullpen is gonna be taxed

Ryn05 September 20, 2008 at 7:48 pm

- C. Ruiz safe at first on third baseman J. Cantu’s throwing error
- J. Blanton safe at first on pitcher A. Sanchez’s throwing error, C. Ruiz to second, C. Ruiz to third

That’s why the Marlins won’t make the playoffs.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Marlins defense at it again. Errors with the 8 and 9 hitters for the phils opens the door for a huge inning.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Man, those plays were Uggla.

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 7:53 pm

HA! just coined a new term!

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Nah, coined that back during the ASG. But it never gets old. :)

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Must score runs. Lots of runs.

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Yeah Castillo, you are a monster!

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 7:52 pm

ill take what i can get right now

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Well, I’ve giving up on bashing Castillo, It’s obvious he’s our second baseman for the remainder of the season so we might as well root him on no matter how hard that may be.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Slappy got on base once…that is a good month for Argenis the Anemic.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:52 pm

chase utley is the devil

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 7:53 pm

how many fckng times has that happened this season? seriously?

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:53 pm

marlins kept it to 1…chubby struck out…

DontShakeAlousHand September 20, 2008 at 7:53 pm

I hate Castillo just as much as most of you, but what bothers me most about him – WHY – does he have to TAKE every 2-0 and 3-1 pitch, that’s a pitch any major leaguer wants to crush – not that he can crush anything, but still.

It bothers me even more, cause everyone knows he is going to take that pitch so he gets 3-0 lollypops on 3-1 and 2-0 —- just gets old after awhile. And i dont want to hear about OPS anymore.

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 7:55 pm

oh so you don’t want to hear about things are important for scoring runs? That’s intelligent.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 7:57 pm

LOL. He ALWAYS take the 2-0 and 3-1 pitch. And every pitcher knows that so they throw an easy strike to even up the count or get two strikes on him. Then, with 2 strikes, he gets in a defensive-swing mode to protect the plate which is why he NEVER hits anything hard because he ALWAYS allows the count to get to 2-strikes. Some people on here think that him doing a great job of working the count, BS!! that’s him doing a POOR job of getting set-up by the pitcher.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Yeah, those walks he gets really drag the team into the mud. And that OPS is SUCH a useless, outdated stat.

PLEASE bring back Argenis the Horrid now, as if he plays every day the rest of the season, maybe he will actually be due to get on base again sometime during the postseason.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 8:00 pm

OPS is a useless, outdated stat? What’s your choice for all-around batting statistic, then?

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 8:02 pm

NYP, that was a sarcastic response to Dontshakealoushand’s “And i dont want to hear about OPS anymore” comment. OF COURSE OPS is the best overall stat, which was the point of my sarcasm

Come one, I expect more from you.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Sorry, bro. My irony meter is busted today. :)

kendychavez September 20, 2008 at 8:05 pm

ah i don’t know you i guess. that post sounds like something a legit idiot would say. ignore my post below

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Hey, no problem.

It is just that you usually have such a high mental OPS for a Metsblog poster, so I was kind of taken aback…..

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I was complimenting you NYP….

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Thanks, kingman – sorry. You’re right, I didn’t read for context. My bad.

DontShakeAlousHand September 20, 2008 at 8:00 pm

LOL i love people and OPS and working counts, get over it, when the pitcher knows you are not going to swing on 3-1 and 2-0 you are only hurting yourself and the team, basically the only counts he might swing on are those where he is behind or has 2 strikes, that’s not good hitting.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:01 pm

NO A. Reyes!!!. Like him or hate him, we’re stuck with Castillo till the end of the season, so might as well root for the guy, though for me personally, it’s like rooting for a root canal, But I will try my best as the true Mets fan that I am.

kendychavez September 20, 2008 at 8:02 pm

OPS is outdated? what advanced, cutting-edge statistics are you using?

barely any stats for you, i’m sure. you watch the games so you know what’s going on better than all the computer geeks, right?

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Man, we have some dumbells on here tonight.

OF COURSE my comment about OPS being outdated and useless was a response to the above poster’s silly comment about not wanting to hear about OPS.

Read the whole thread to get context folks and pay attention.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:06 pm

I’m not defending the guy, but easy with the computer geek stuff, baseball games aren’t won by computer. There was an aricle in the NY Times explaining how all these “New Age” stats are getting oput of hand to the point of being ridiculous. It’s was a great article with allot of imput from actual scouts. I’m more “Old School” and use OBP, RBI, HRs, BA etc.

kendychavez September 20, 2008 at 8:07 pm

the huge number of dumbells on here is precisely why I made the post. don’t you think half the people reading saw your post and agreed?

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Apparently so, but still a bit surprising. I mean, my entire post was sarcasm, and the part about wanting Argenis back couldn’t be taken seriously, could it?

But thanks for the posts, appreciate it.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:11 pm

I’ve noticed many people on here have a very hard time with sarcasm! LOL

kendychavez September 20, 2008 at 8:12 pm

there’s plenty of people here that would prefer reyes to castillo. wasn’t that a text poll on a game the other night and argenis won by a landslide? i thought the sarcasm was saying ‘argenis the horrid’… i mean, the team was winning while he was in the lineup everyday, right? that’s the rationale

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Hey listen, you can take both and place them on the trash for early morning pick-up. But in a stretch drive, you have to go with Castillo. Neither can hit and yes, Reyes does have more range than Castillo, but Castillo’s OBP is better and he’s been in a pennant race before. Next season, that’s a different story, I don’t want Castillo anywhere near this team.

DontShakeAlousHand September 20, 2008 at 8:15 pm

I didnt say OPS doesn’t mean anything, I mean dont talk about Castillo’s OPS, its in the 600’s, last year in the 700’s, so I dont get where people think his OPS is so great, maybe 5 years ago. Right now he’s basically a little leaguer up there crossing his fingers for a walk.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:24 pm

OPS is not the best formula for measuring performance contrary too many “Computer Geeks”. (Boy I know this is going to ruffle some feathers on here and generate a slew responses defending OPS! LOL ) The on base percentage (OBP) is nearer to the mark than the combination of on base percentage and slugging percentage.
I have a problem with slugging percentage and on base percentage being given equal status in OPS. On base percentage tends to more accurately indicate the likelihood that a player will actually make it to home plate and score a run. In fact on base percentage tends to be about a 10-25% lower than OPS

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 8:27 pm

“Right now he’s basically a little leaguer up there crossing his fingers for a walk.”

You are describing A Reyes, probably the worst offensive non-pitcher in the game right now. His miniscule defensive superiority over Slappy doesn’t compensate for his complete uselessness at the plate.

And disrespect Slappy’s OBP all you want, but Argenis couldn’t get on base at a .350 clip if he was given 5 strikes per at bat.

And yes, I pray that both are gone by Feb 1, but Argenis doesn’t belong on a major league roster today or ever.

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 8:32 pm

And X-Man, I completely agree that OPS would be even better if OBP was given a slightly higher weight.

I think OBP is about the best offensive stat. Which is why I favor Slappy McShadowofhisformerself over Argenis the Anemic.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Agree 100% about Reyes. not even a AA player in my books.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Agree King. I hate Castillo, but Reyes is even worse. I’m hoping Slappy can get some flash-backs of his formal self and help down the stretch and in the play-offs.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 7:53 pm

God just remembered that he hates the Mets. He’s been hating the Brewers lately but remembered that he hates the Mets more.

He hates the Mets. But he DESPISES the Brewers along with their fans.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 7:54 pm

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Utley’s been quiet as of late… I hope that SOB doesn’t start hitting.. He murdered us last yr… Lets go Marlins!

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Hey, maybe we can set a double-play record tonight….

Come on Pedro, keep us in the game, you can do it.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 7:57 pm

murphy with the heilman pants out there…

skylog September 20, 2008 at 7:57 pm

man, got some bad luck going on to start these two games, let’s hope things turn for the better. the mets are hitting the ball but have zero to show for it and yet again, the phillies benefit from more errors. seriously, how many errors have they had go in their favor the past few games?

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 8:00 pm

ummmm…i dont know — how many?

It seems like they’ve been winning by playing well and scoring lots of runs

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:07 pm

well, ok…..

2 tonight leading to their run
1 last night for one run
2 the game before for one run
1 the game before for one run
2 the game before

i never said they weren’t playing well, just that they had errors going in their favor

DontShakeAlousHand September 20, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Pedro it’s time to hang it up – when you have to battle this hard just to get through the first 3 innings w 3 runs its over. I can’t watch this in the playoffs -

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:07 pm

great name

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 8:06 pm

We are rooting for the Fish tonight, but there are decent odds they start a brawl at Shea during the last regular season game…

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:11 pm

agreed, and if everyone is not careful they may sneak in somewhere

rigsay September 20, 2008 at 8:06 pm

When will the Mets ever learn?

When you keep singing A$$holes like Leiter, Glavine, Pedro who have rings and come for the money. Either way they leave with the money and the ring they had.

And the Mets lose again…

metsforever September 20, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Maybe Glavine and Pedro, but Leiter saved the Mets a$$es in 1999 and 2000

bkfitz September 20, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Pedro is done unless he has a Mike Mussina rebirth and realizes his fastball is 82 not 98.

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 8:07 pm

i feel bad for pedro more than anything else, he is obviously done but in the postseaon, if he has the opportunity can pitch a good game.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Someone in the pen is going have to man up tonight and bail Pedro out of yet another disgraceful performance

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 8:09 pm

that’s gold again, 911.

Do you get paid for this analysis?

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 8:13 pm

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Pedro bringing the heat!

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 8:10 pm

O.K., didn’t give up any runs. Now let’s get some.

das320 September 20, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Pedro does not have it tonight, but he is battling

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 8:10 pm

pedro seems to be getting stronger…onus is on the offense now…time to chip away.

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 8:10 pm

hopefully Pedro can settle in and at least give us 3-4 more scoreless innings

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:12 pm

ridethesnake September 20, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Why can’t Pedro throw a sim inning in the bullpen before each game

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:13 pm

they talked about doing that a couplea weeks ago…wonder why they didn’t…

metsforever September 20, 2008 at 8:12 pm

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Nothing like getting shut down for the 2nd time this season by Mexican League garbage. This guy tops out at 87.

rigsay September 20, 2008 at 8:19 pm

yeah I don’t get it. The Met usually feast off of average righty pitching.

They’re not being patient tonight. Murphy swung at ball 4

Two-By-Four September 20, 2008 at 8:21 pm

The Mets have had there share of problems against pitchers that throw slop, change speeds and throw a lot of breaking pitches. If you take an intelligent and patient approach against these types of pitchers you can feast against them but the Mets are not that type of hitting team.

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:17 pm

warning track power so far tonight

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 8:17 pm

This is simply mind boggling; everytime we rock a pitcher in one start, if his next start is against us, he dominates….

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 8:19 pm

maybe they realize the futility of fighting back with a batting practice pitcher protecting a lead

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 8:20 pm

really? EVERY TIME? What about Scott Olsen — does he not count. We’ve roughed him up like 4 times this year

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 8:18 pm

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:18 pm

This is the same group of fans that were saying “I HATE THIS TEAM — THIS GAME IS OVER” in the 7th inning last night and then “I LOVE THIS TEAM — LOVE THE FIGHT!!!” 2 innings later…

Could you guys be more fickle?

Baseball is not a game that can be analyzed on an inning-by-inning or pitch-by-pitch basis…

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:26 pm

well said

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:27 pm

…but a game that can be frustrating inning-by-inning and pitch-by-pitch.

good thing there is a place to come and vent and not have to worry about being judged

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Neither game is even close to being over….

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 8:24 pm

everyone needs to chill, this team puts up runs in bunches so one good inning with a few hits in we are right back in it again. last night showed we can score late in games as well as early. dont think they are just gonna roll over and lose. if pedro and the bullpen can keep it reasonable well win this game. GO METS!!!

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:25 pm

Well, here goes.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:27 pm

This actually defends Castillo for all you Castillo “Apologists” out there. LOL

kingman 26 September 20, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Yes it does, and very intelligently. OBP is perhaps the most telling offensive stat, and why Argenis should never see another day on a major league baseball field.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 8:41 pm

There’s some merit to what your’e saying, in the sense that OBP and SLG are measures of two different things and combining the two numbers produces a composite statistic that doesn’t really have any numerical relationship to anything specific in the real world. It’s more of an “index” sort of statistic.

But I still think it’s a reasonably good indicator of not only how likely it is that someone will get on base, but also how far. Think of it, in a sense, as a relative indication of the likelihood that a batter will end up in scoring position. As such, I think it’s a pretty good stat, or at least better than anything other single number we have.

Perhaps some extensive analysis could produce a more statistically valid way to combine walks, hits, and extra base hits, but until someone does that work, I think OPS is the best we’ve got.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Correct, but I would a little more weight to be givinn to the OPB when calculating OPS as I think the MOST important thing is to get on base in the first place whether by a walk, a double or a single. How many times does a lead off walk end up scoring?

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:45 pm

**would like***

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Ugh. I wrote out some detailed thinking on this, but the server swallowed it. I don’t have the energy to do it again, so let me just say — agreed, but I still like OPS as an all-around “how far around the bases you get” stat. It could be improved, though.

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 8:37 pm

but he still stinks….this doesnt change the fact that he cant get out of the first inning without giving up 3 runs anymore. nonetheless, nice stick. bout time you helped us out

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 8:38 pm

well if he can pitch 2 more scoreless innings you can make the argument he hasnt been bad with clearly sub par stuff tonight

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 8:39 pm

I’d get Parnell and Figgy up and ready – now.

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 8:40 pm

hopefully…we will see. im not gonna change my opinion of him just yet. im glad he helped his own cause, but he’s still the reason we are losing. he needs to go two more scoreless to have me forgive him.

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 8:41 pm

well im sure pedro really cares about your opinion enough so he will breeze through these next 2 innings.

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 8:44 pm

not saying he does care about my opinion. im just separating myself from the bandwagoners that will be cheering pedros name now, only an hour after wanting his blood. that being said, i hope he does throw 2 scoreless. lol

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 8:40 pm

damn Pedro’s just gonna give it back up again!

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:40 pm

come on, don’t give any right back!

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:41 pm

come on dp here

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:41 pm

PEDRO AGAIN!!!!

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 8:41 pm

sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 8:41 pm

Yes! Nice, Pedro.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 8:41 pm

god the Mets are playing with fire with this guy on the mound

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 8:42 pm

wow. first the stick, now the glove. he’s really trying to kiss mets fans a$$es to get on their good side again, isn’t he?

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Yes. Are you buying it?

dwright5_godsend September 20, 2008 at 8:46 pm

if we win, maybe. im more willing to forget than forgive, though. we still have a problem in the bigger picture. i dont see him helping us into the postseason.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 8:42 pm

It’s only a matter of time before Ryan Howard hits his homer

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Great Play Pedro.

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 8:42 pm

If we make the playoff, can we really win it with Pedro in the rotation?

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Yes i think we can win with pedro. because he is great after the 1st inning.

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 8:44 pm

well would you rather have hall of famer but cant pitch anymore pedro or rookie with 2 maybe 3 starts neise because after santana pelfrey and perez who else we got?

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 8:46 pm

I’d like the Pedro is striking people out, starting double plays, and driving in runs. Can we have him, please? Thanks.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:46 pm

the thing is that pedro stinks in the first inning in nearly every game but after that he settles down fairly nice…if you look at innings 2 on he hasn’t been bad

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 8:48 pm

unfortunately you can’t start him in the 2nd inning

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:50 pm

that’s the thing…somebody mentioned the sim inning before a game….i wonder if he can use it to warm up enough to use all of his pitches effectively

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:42 pm

blast, thought cantu was going to get them in there

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Great pitching by Pedro against Kotchman that at bat!

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:43 pm

great inning there….pedro really showing up in both halves

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I just saw the old Pedro.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:45 pm

nice wasn’t it?

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:44 pm

big inning here, maybe this time through they get to him in earnest

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 8:44 pm

LET’S GET SOME RUNS!!!!!!

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Hey Campillo! “Say hello to my little friend.” Let’s get to this guy.

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Murph working the count. gotta love it.

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 8:48 pm

This kid is really something.

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 8:46 pm

i think Murphy is hitting a double right now

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Make him work Murph.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 8:47 pm

C’mon, Murph! You’ve been SO CLOSE.

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:48 pm

whew, close to out and close to being an out

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:48 pm

The kid’s got some stroke huh?

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 8:49 pm

COME ON WRIGHT!!!!!!!

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 8:49 pm

future #5 hitter

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 8:50 pm

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 8:50 pm

There you go, David.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:51 pm

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Now the Mets Hottest Hitter, Beltran.

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Filthbags are threatening!

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Lets go delGODO!!! Cmon Boise!!!

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 8:51 pm

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 8:54 pm

phillies got the lead

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 8:54 pm

greg dobbs should be stabbed to death!!!!!!!

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Up to you, Beltran.

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 8:55 pm

F**k Greg Dobbs.

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:55 pm

i hate dobbs. come on carlos!

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 8:55 pm

dobbs is a jerk

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 8:55 pm

dobbs is such a mets killer. they should arrest him.

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Damn. Okay Pedro, can’t believe we have to say this, but, um, please hold the lead. Thanks.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 8:57 pm

don’t worry, he’ll hold the Braves lead, THAT I am confident in

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 8:58 pm

Hahaha. Good call.

Please hold the one-run lead. That’s one out down…

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:57 pm

that was huge, if only daniel could have made his way on

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 8:59 pm

but that was an awesome at-bat…he never wastes at-bats

skylog September 20, 2008 at 8:59 pm

no, agreed, just wishing for what could have been there

smm140 September 20, 2008 at 8:59 pm

are they playing pepper with casey kotchman?

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Gotta love Petey’s 83MPH waste-pitch fastball.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Hows gansta Jerry not out screaming ’bout that call?

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 9:03 pm

OH I thought he had that strike-em-out-throw-em-out. Damn.

Still, another strike out. Get one more out Pedro, c’mon!

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:03 pm

looked out to me…he was out by a mile

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:04 pm

bullsht, he was out, oh well, I guess that’s a makeup call

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Oh, he was out. Damn.

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:04 pm

He was out at 2nd — that’s terrible

BlueCapsOnly September 20, 2008 at 9:05 pm

the call they blew on first for the Braves was worse, I’d say we’re even.

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:08 pm

yes — and that was terrible too…doesn’t make this one right or okay

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:05 pm

well makes up for the play at first i guess

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:05 pm

bullspit!- an outs an out!

mr.gee21 September 20, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Ha. Radio coverage actually broke for a commercial thinking Pedro was coming out…

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Jeeze, even THEY saw he was out….

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:06 pm

what’s going on with the centerfield camera? the blair witch crew must be running it

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:06 pm

of course…

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:06 pm

crap

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:06 pm

I KNEW that blown call would come back to haunt us….

das320 September 20, 2008 at 9:07 pm

f ing blown call cost a run!!!

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:08 pm

And THATS the reason you gotta argue that call!

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm

why? would that have overturned it?

das320 September 20, 2008 at 9:07 pm

shades of grady little right there

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:07 pm

That was on Manuel, folks. How much longer is he gonna go?

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Fans should stop w/ the grady little nonsense.
This guy has been the best pitcher of his generation and is
a first ballot HOFer. HE gets to say when he comes out.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Who gives a sht? Has he pitched like a hall of famer for the Mets?

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:14 pm

No BUT he is Pedro Martinez.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:16 pm

that stuff drives me crazy, at what point do you put egos aside and do what’s best for your ball team? I’m not saying he should’ve been taken out, but to give a player the benefit of the doubt because he WAS a great pitcher is retarded.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Not at THIS point. Not with THIS Bullpen.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:08 pm

well it’s only 1….come on bats

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Screw umpires. We need instant replay on everything!!!!!!!!!!!

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Yeah, thats a great idea. 6hour 9inning games every night.

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 9:13 pm

they should just have a huge screen on the scoreboard that replays stuff, that won’t take any time at all!

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:14 pm

no, no time at all.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:08 pm

The umps blown call earlier helped us. Stop complaining.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 9:08 pm

That umpire should meet up with Ed Hocculi (sp). They’ll have a lot to talk about.

Of course, Pedro needs to get out this no-name Anderson.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:09 pm

How about NOT WALKING Brandon Jones??? That’s why the run scored.

skylog September 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm

how about it. he make him look foolish his other at bats, why not attack him and make him beat you?

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm

alright churchy. lets get this going!

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Church looks great. He’s been crushing the ball of late

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm

ok, starter out bullpen in. lets light up these weak braves pitchers!

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Mets better rally because there is no way the Marlins are going to rally against the Phils bullpen. They are swinging at EVERYTHING. Mike Jacobs just swung at a ball that bounced before it got to the plate on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the inning. That game is over.

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:12 pm

get on slappy you can do it

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:13 pm

wow, a Castillo hit, I forgot what that looked like

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:13 pm

there ya go slappy

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:14 pm

ok lets start something here!

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 9:14 pm

One swing. One swing

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 9:15 pm

COME ON CASTRO!!!!!!!!!!!!

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:16 pm

alright castro you best, lets get it DONE!!!

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:17 pm

wow, hope that at bat didn’t disturb you Castro

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:17 pm

ew…that was bad

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 9:17 pm

DAMN!

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:17 pm

well that was quick,

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Well, THAT was a nice looking swing.
Anyone still want to hand him the Catching job?

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Josh Willingham gets picked off down a run to end the inning. The Marlins are a horrendous fundamental team. They are just clueless.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 9:20 pm

yet they some how give the mets a run for their money every single time they play them. they’re composed of kingmans, deers and balboni’s, yet they somehow win games.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:17 pm

OK, can I complain about something that has nothing to do with the Mets?

That commercial with the guy from the car dealership, who says “we have a logo in our service area … ‘if you think something’s more important than the customer, think again.’”

No. You have a slogan in your service area. Not a logo. You may have a logo in your service area too, but I doubt it says that, because that would be a really stupid logo.

Thank you. Carry on.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:18 pm

great point…but at least it’s not topdot

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:19 pm

True.

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Terrific at bat Castro. Just terrific

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:18 pm

we need some of that marlon magic we saw late last year, LETS GO!!!

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Took out brian for a K by castro.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:18 pm

I cant even remember the last time Marlon hit the ball hard.

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 9:19 pm

2006

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 9:21 pm

You mean 2007, right?

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 9:24 pm

ummmm sure

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 9:19 pm

These guys look like they’re sleepwalking today.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:21 pm

What the hay!?-Was Marlon watching that (again)
instead of runnin hard out of the box??

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Well, I’ll admit it’s not looking good, but we still have a couple of innings left. Let’s just hope the pen can hold the Brave’s lead to where it is.

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 9:20 pm

you know the offense cant get much done when the only rbi’s come from your starting pitcher and his name isnt Mica Owings

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:21 pm

well we need to hold the braves to nothing this next inning then we have the top of the order in the 8th for one final push! we can still do this! LETS GO METS!!!!!

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Great. Looks like we are losing and Phils are going to win. Well it was nice to have 1st place for one day.

rockets212 September 20, 2008 at 9:24 pm

being in 1st place only matters after the last game they can have 1st place for now, well get it back if we lose and they win tonight

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 9:25 pm

I don’t really think that we “had” first place… I don’t really consider a half game lead “having” anything. We have more innings in this one, and more games to go… Do not get that disgouraged too quickly.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Thank GOD the Shea faithful never came up with some lame chant, complete with a lame arm motion.

If I had to watch all Mets home games with something like the Tomahawk chop 100 times a game…..

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:26 pm

no kidding….lamest signature in sports

sddbaker September 20, 2008 at 10:14 pm

better than the Mets signature, which is CHOKING

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:27 pm

You mean like sound effects after the lets go mets chant?

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:23 pm

these guys have to be watching the scoreboard to see the phillies score. that should light a fire under there A$$! cant bank on the fish winning tonight so they gotta man up and hold first place by force!

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Like they are not trying? What the hell does the Phillies score have to do with them in this game. Oh man the Phillies are up we should start trying harder? Like they should not have been trying that hard to start with? Oh the Phillies aren’t playing today so we will give 75% effort.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:24 pm

nice k sho

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:25 pm

nice inning for Schoe

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:25 pm

O.K., Schoe – nice 1-2-3.
Let’s get some runs, boys.

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 9:27 pm

This has got to be the inning.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:28 pm

dang…how many sportswriters are getting their “where reyes goes, so goes the mets” stories started tonight?

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Not difficult since ITS BEEN TRUE FOR FOUR YEARS NOW!

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:31 pm

no kidding? hadn’t noticed….just pointing out that it’s a hacky cop out article that gets churned out at least 5 times a month…

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Did not mean to cut ‘ya but have heard enough
Wright/Bel-tron MVP junk tolast a lifetime.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:28 pm

The Mets never hit Bennett. Unreal.

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Schow goes 1.2.3.. That means we HAVE to score some runs… I don’t recall last 1.2.3. inning by this guy.. LETS GO BOYS!!

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:29 pm

C’mon, Murph. We need a hero again.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Nuts.

IA062008 September 20, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Put it in the books. We lost. Lets hope the Marlins can come back

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:32 pm

I ain’t over till it’s over.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Yeah, alright Yogi.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:35 pm

You don’t like that?
How about Tug’s ‘You Gotta Believe’?

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Really, I wished we’d get the Magic Back :)

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Not looking great. But we still have the Carlos twins in the 9th. Could be worse.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:32 pm

These guys are kidding right?
who are these friggin pitchers shutting us down?

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 9:32 pm

There’s still 1 inning to go..

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:31 pm

OK. You’re Jerry. Put Schoe out again? Or Parnell?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:32 pm

If I am Jerry it will most likely be neither. If I am me then I would leave Show for now.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:32 pm

am i really jerry, or do i just think i’m jerry, or does everybody else think i’m jerry but i’m really me but also jerry?

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:33 pm

LOL !

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:34 pm

UR JERRY BUT U THINK UR U AND JERRY THINKS UR U TOO.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:32 pm

You know what??? Nothing has changed. Losing 3 of 5 to the Braves down the stretch? Two last week in heart-breaking fashion? This team always has bent over and taken it from Atlanta. No Chipper tonight and they still give this lifeless performance.

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 9:32 pm

No life or sense of urgency by this team tonight…. God, their freaking inconsistent aren’t they? As Reyes goes, the Mets go..

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:36 pm

What does life or sense of urgency look like? So if Reyes had gotten on there because of an error and Bennett had thrown Wright a meatball and he hit a HR we would have more urgency?

kd bart September 20, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Thank you. Everytime the Mets lose, it’s not because they sleptwalked or played with no heart. Sometimes, you lose because the opposition executes better than you do. This is a game where you’re going to lose 40 percent of the time if your good. I guess the Phillies played with no heart last night because they lost 14-8. Tonight, they must’ve found their heart.

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Tell me, sandie, you wise purveyor of human thought:

Tell me how you know the Mets have “no life or sense of urgency” tonight? Because they haven’t hit more home runs? Because they’ve struggled a little at times? Because you were playing poker in the clubhouse with Reyes and Wright between innings?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Exactly. I never have understood this. This is baseball. You should not be able just to try harder than the other team and win.

das320 September 20, 2008 at 9:33 pm

the guy is 3-6 and has a 3.87 era and we make him look like an all star

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:36 pm

In our bullpen he would be the closer.

das320 September 20, 2008 at 9:38 pm

so sad but so true

kd bart September 20, 2008 at 9:48 pm

And we started a pitcher who is 5-5 with a 5+ ERA.

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Francouer is the best…

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:38 pm

frenchy with another bad night

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:39 pm

hold out hope folks. im feeling a ninth inning rally here! delgado, beltran, and church and get it done! LETS GO METS!!!!

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 9:40 pm

I like this Parnell kid. Nice slider to go with the hard stuff.

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:41 pm

great inning parnell….alright boys earn the paychecks here

NYP-BOS-NYP September 20, 2008 at 9:41 pm

Nice work, Bobby!

Two-By-Four September 20, 2008 at 9:41 pm

BTW how many people laughed when the Phillies acquired Blanton?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Ummm, Me and I still am.

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:43 pm

same with me…and I still am too

Two-By-Four September 20, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Had I known that you and Mr. Real86 were among the ones that laughed I would have never made this post. One never questions self pro-claimed baseball deities. :)

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Should have just ask us to start with.

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:43 pm

lets kick the tires and light the fires! LETS GO METS!!!!

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:44 pm

holy crap and i thought paul byrd’s windup was annoying

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:45 pm

yeah, i hate watching this kid pitch! would love to see the mets knock him and his crappy delivery around!

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:45 pm

yeah, i hate watching this kid pitch! would love to see the mets knock him and his crappy delivery around!

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Friggin Philly bullpen. Must be nice to constantly hold 1 run leads.

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:44 pm

need a base runner, get on delgado!

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Here comes another Mets killer, Gonzalez

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:45 pm

that was a nasty pitch there fore the K

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:45 pm

This guy will walk you every time if you let him.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:45 pm

hahahaha – Keith ‘ someone should hit a line drive off his forehead’.
Referencing Gonzalez and ‘mount presence’.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Some great ABs tonight.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:46 pm

I bet good ole Leo taught this guy his rock.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:46 pm

On his last outing he gave up a two run homer with 2 outs, now he looks like Koufax

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:47 pm

20 fun hours back in 1st place! That was fun.

das320 September 20, 2008 at 9:47 pm

God I really hate this pitcher

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 9:47 pm

I wish someone would hit a screaming liner at Gonzales’ head. I hate that little dance he does before making a pitch.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:48 pm

I hate this Gonzalez with his antics.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Disgusting loss!

khmustache September 20, 2008 at 9:49 pm

well there ya go….cmon fish! cya guys tomorrow

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Unacceptable to lose this game. Dominated by Campillo?? Can’t happen in September. And screw Pedro. I dont want to hear one word about how he battled. 4 runs in 6 innings is crap.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Crap.
I really hate this roller coaster ride of up and down for first place. Guess I’d better get used to it for the next 8 days…..

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:50 pm

the Mets weren’t winning with Pedro pitching. At least they have a real pitcher going tomorrow. Hopefully Reyes made good use of his off day too.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:49 pm

and after too

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Tough game tonight — it happens.

Let’s go out and get ‘em tomorrow…

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:49 pm

well thats that. hoping the fish can come threw but doubt it. first place was nice for a little bit though

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Just have a bad feeling that we wont see first again. I am confident we make the playoffs. With the Cubs coming up, and Niese going on 9 days rest. Pedro having to go again, I just dont think we see 1st again. Hope I am wrong.

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:52 pm

same here, the Mets have a 3 man rotation but the Brewers are in total freefall. I hate to play the Cubs in the first round but I guess its better than nothing

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Eh, did anyone really expect to win Pedro’s start?

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:51 pm

so true 86……and how sad is that?

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:53 pm

exactly, at least the bullpen wasn’t completely annihilated

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:51 pm

I’ll not give him the ball for the rest of the season, I’ll try this kid Parnell

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:52 pm

Yeah, THAT’s not gonna happen.

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Uninspired garbage from an uninspired team tonight…. I don’t even remember the name of the Brave pitcher tonite…. No fight, no effort. No nothing… Dissappointing… Seems like we play like s*** every Saturday….

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:52 pm

that would be a scrub who has pitched in the Mexican League for the last 7 years. I think his catcher was Jake Taylor.

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 9:53 pm

It might be time to sacrafice a chicken or something.

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:53 pm

seriously, sandie, what does “fight” look like? Getting more hits? Do you seriously think the Mets decide before the game whether they are going to try to “fight” that day or not?

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Sandie??? wow, i had to read that a few times.. I’m not saying that they made a conscious decision to not play well.. But it would be nice to have seen someone step up or do or say something to get these guys a little fired up.. It just seems like when these guys get into first.. They ease up on the pedal just a little bit… Is it not true, just a little?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:02 pm

How do you know they did not? Because we lost? How do you know they were not too fired up? What does one on fire look like?

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 10:03 pm

I don’t think that is true (even) a little but I suppose I don’t know…but, the point is, NEITHER DO YOU so it is ridiculous to even speculate

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Again, answer how you know that they were uninspired? Because they did not win? I guess if you try harder than the other team and someone gives the Big Gipper speach then you can go 162-0.

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:52 pm

we will take the series tomorrow! this thing is gonna come down to the last day but the mets will come through!

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 9:53 pm

you better hope it does not, because that means Johan goes on the final day and cant start game 1 or 2 of the playoffs.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:52 pm

I think that we’ll win the div. but I don’t want to see Pedro on the mound again starting a game.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Well thats not gonna happen either.

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 9:56 pm

youll see him 1 more time i bet. i just hope someone has the balls in the organization to keep him out of the starting rotation in the playoffs. ill take my chances with a young kid like niese. pedro can come out of the bullpen. who knows, made hell get fired up coming in to save games.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:54 pm

The offense was horrible again, this Campillo guy is softball pitcher, how can we not send him to the showers early and score a least 6 runs off of him.

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 9:55 pm

It kills me to have to root for the fish with the pointy nose to win our games for us… The Mets should have taken care of business tonight… But Pedro in my eyes is toast… Or maybe he shouldn’t pitch the first 3 innings.. Could we start him in the 4th?

911nafstem September 20, 2008 at 9:56 pm

he was lucky he only gave up 4 runs

ReyesMets September 20, 2008 at 9:58 pm

maybe if you had more fight, sandie, it wouldn’t “kill you to root for the fish”

sandiegometsman September 20, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Sandie has plenty of fight…. If that’s what you’re looking for.. I will root for the fish.. Looks like the Fish still have some fight too…

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:06 pm

But if they lose it will be because no one stepped up and lit himself on fire?

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:55 pm

We have to think about making the playoff first, and them we can think who will pitch in the first and second game.

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Thank You! Agreed!

kd bart September 20, 2008 at 9:59 pm

In terms of making the playoffs, it wasn’t a disaster of a night. Even if the Phils win and go back into first, still tied in the loss column, the magic # for making the playoffs would’ve fallen by one since the Brewers, Marlins, Astros and Cards all lost. Magic # is now 5 for the Brewers, 4 for the Astros and Marlins and 3 for the Cards.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Cantu just got a hit, Jacobs hitting no outs

fongulalou September 20, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Big Fish Rally!

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Jacobs doubles, 2nd and 3rd, nobody out!

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Tough loss but I think we will bounce back tomorrow with a win. It was pretty much an automatic loss with Pedro tonight so I wasn’t really that shocked tomorrow. Luckily the Brewers lost, so we still have a 2.5 game lead over the wild card.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 9:59 pm

There shouldn’t be ‘Automatic losses” with 9-games to play and a tight pennant race!

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 10:02 pm

I take nothing for granted. Many thought that last double header with Santana and Niese would be a 1/1 split. Yeah, it was but not the way we all figured. Niese won his game even though 90% thought it was an ‘automatic’ loss.

You just can’t play baseball on paper.

metsfan42793 September 20, 2008 at 10:08 pm

But when Pedro Martinez is on the mound, you know he is going to give up atleast 4 runs. The Mets never win when he is starting. When was the last time they won one of his starts.

MetsFan4Decades September 20, 2008 at 10:17 pm

You make a good point. I’m just saying I can’t go down the road of it’s an automatic loss before the game is even played.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Jacobs hit a double, second and third no outs

garfios September 20, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Cantu out at home, what bonehead

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Terrible call, terrible job sending the runner, terrible job by the guy at 2nd base not running behind.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:01 pm

and the guy on second didn’t advance to third, you know the fish

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:02 pm

You see guys, they are others that play way worst than us

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:04 pm

If the goof ball runner that was on 2nd had moved up on the goof ball 3rd base coaches error of sending the goof ball runner on 3rd when the gooff ball umpire got the call wrong then this game could have been 4-3.

Flushing_is_Burning September 20, 2008 at 10:05 pm

can’t believe im saying this but…. Come on Cody Ross

Flushing_is_Burning September 20, 2008 at 10:11 pm

good for nothing Fish…

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Tha ump is the worst I had evr see, right up there with angel hernandez, he is always in some controversial calls. Common Cory, get a hit

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Funny how the umps screw us when we are not even there. This game should be 4-3 at least.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 10:11 pm

what happened 86? I cant watch. A Marlin was safe at home?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Yup, but the goof ball Marlin’s 3rd base coach should not have sent him and then the goof ball pinch runner at 2nd didn’t move up.

kd bart September 20, 2008 at 10:11 pm

I guess the Marlins aren’t playing with a sense of urgency.

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 10:11 pm

2nd and 3rd, nobody out, and you don’t score, thanks Marlins

Brad Lidge is due to blow a save, right??

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:12 pm

If it was Heilman pitching instead of Madson, Ross would’ve hit a 3-run jack.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:12 pm

But the are, it is hard to play against the umps too

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Unbelievable how the one year Brad Lidge morphs into Mariano Rivera, he happens to play for the Phillies.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 10:14 pm

can someone fill us in for those who cant see the game? what was the bad call? thanks

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Yes, clearly safe. Not even close. Then they hit Ross in the hand with a pitch and say it’s the bat. Then he goes on to SO.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Lidge is throwing just sliders, they have to sit on that S^*T and win the game, now look at how the Phillies score the insurance run.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:17 pm

“Questionable call by CB Bucknor” – Matt Yalloff

Aren’t all his calls questionable? He is consistently rated the worst umpire in baseball.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:18 pm

2 questionable calls against the Marlins in the same inning. In fact not even questionable on the play at home. You could speed up the replay and he would still be clearly safe.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Cantu opens the inning with a hit follow by Jacobs double, the next guy I think it was Ugla hit a gb to third, he was going on contact the throw was on the money but the Cantu got there first.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:18 pm

That is what I said, he is always involved in controversial calls

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:19 pm

dobbs doubled to lead off the inning.

that guy is Mr. September. Always, always, always coming up big.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:20 pm

He’s going to blow this one.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Lidge is due to blow a save one of these days.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:22 pm

you see nothing but sliders

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 10:22 pm

CB Bucknor is awful. It’s amazing some of these clowns are not fired. I’d like to see Angel Hernandez and CB get what is coming to them. Arrogant SOB’s

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Angel is arrogant….Bucknor is just plain bad.

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Amezaga walks…

C’mon Marlins…

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Amezega is a tough little out………..

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 10:25 pm

CMON, BLOW IT!!!!

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 10:28 pm

lidge has to blow one one of these days, right?

think the homer pujols hit a couple years ago from houston to new mexico

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 10:29 pm

RISP, lets get this run home

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Dallas Mcpherson K’s, Alfredo steals second

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 10:32 pm

watching on computer, says injury delay, who go hurt?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Friggin ump.

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 10:33 pm

weak, hoping it was lidge!

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 10:32 pm

whose the injury delay on?

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 10:33 pm

cb bucknor

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:33 pm

The Ump just got hit, right below the throat and the crow is cheering

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Got to admit wouldn’t the fans at Shea be too after the terrible call he made last inning?

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:35 pm

I’m cheering here too.

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 10:33 pm

HEY BRAD LIDGE REMEMBER ALBERT PUJOLS!!!!!!!!!1

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:34 pm

He’s getting back behind the plate

mylegshurt September 20, 2008 at 10:34 pm

For God’s sake guys, Braves had the superior pitcher going tonight — 14 decisions with an ERA less than four. Pedro doesn’t have the stuff to finish off hitters any more and is lucky his ERA is under 6.00. And the Mets had scored 25 runs in their previous three games, so they were due for a clunker. Tonight was disappointing but not a huge surprise.

I hope I’m wrong, but I’m starting to think that the long layoff and the type of injury he had is too much for Church to overcome right now. He looks completely discombobulated at the plate – they’d probably shut him down fror the year if they weren’t competing for something. Unfortunately Tatis’ injury has limited Jerry’s options.

Braves are pitching Jamie Farr tomorrow? The star of “AfterM*A*S*H”? Should we counter with Loretta Swit?

curiojeff September 20, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Aaaannnnddd… Gary Burgman delivers… Wayne Rogers swings… it’s a deep drive to the gap in left-center… Larry Linville racing back… at the wall… annnnndddd… IT’S OUTTA HERE!!!

curiojeff September 20, 2008 at 11:08 pm

*Burghoff. My bad.

miker94 September 20, 2008 at 10:34 pm

funny how you hear the crowd cheering, but i can’t hear anything, i can’t bring myself to listen to either of these fools’ broadcast. mute is on here man…

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 10:35 pm

The suspense in killing me!

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 10:36 pm

hope the delay help take lidge out of his game, LETS GO FISH!!

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:36 pm

another slider, maybin k

miker94 September 20, 2008 at 10:36 pm

what a joke, maybin k’s

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 10:36 pm

STOP STRIKING OUT YOU BUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:36 pm

I just don’t get it. Why do they swing at the slider? You can’t hit it and its very rarely for a strike.

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 20, 2008 at 10:38 pm

maybe they don’t know its a slider

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:39 pm

obviously.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Good to see Hanley hurt and watch Maybin K 4 times tonight…………

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 10:36 pm

damn maybin you piece of crap. phils are lucky hanley isnt in.

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Maybin Ks

CAN ANYONE NOT SWING AT HIS STUPID SLIDER????

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:37 pm

This kids are looking foolish at the plate right now

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:37 pm

I guess the ump had to come back out to make sure he got the save.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:37 pm

jeez…lidge. you know that if the mets had lidge this year he would’ve been the second coming of braden looper.

mets+closers is like drinking and driving. just doesn’t mix.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:39 pm

If he throws anything close to the plate he is going to swing at it. When I said close I mean one foot give or take, Phillies on first

D-Day September 20, 2008 at 10:39 pm

damn. well there goes first, oh well we will get it back tomorrow! LETS GO METS!!!!

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:39 pm

3 rookies three strike outs.

bringbackolerud5 September 20, 2008 at 10:40 pm

The Marlins are like a beer league softball team. Who is their hitting coach? Rob Deer?

mylegshurt September 20, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Good one!

rM teM September 21, 2008 at 1:31 am

he’s a hitting instructor for San Diego minor’s.

dazedandconfused September 20, 2008 at 10:40 pm

How come only the Mets can hit Lidge, but they can’t hit any of the crappy pitchers.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:40 pm

sigh….and that’s that. first place was fun while it lasted. must-win tomorrow. cannot allow the demons of this wretched turner field get to them tomorrow.

Sylar September 20, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Baker Ks….

GODDAMN-IT, CAN LIDGE BLOW AT LEAST ONE SAVE??? HE IS NOT ERIC GAGNE!!!!

cousinrk September 20, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Damn Lidge, every game he puts guys on, throws 25 pitches and gets out of it. He’s dying to blow a save, its gotta happen soon

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Game should be tied at best if not for the ump. What a terrible call that may very well have cost the Marlins a playoff trip.

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:44 pm

you’re the most even-keeled commenter on this site. if you’re upset about this call, it must’ve been Hoculi-like. Can’t wait to see the replay.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Thanks for the complement but yeah it was terrible. You can’t get a play at home wrong much worse than that.

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 10:45 pm

CB Buckner is the worst umpire in the NL.

garfios September 20, 2008 at 10:41 pm

He never threw a fastball for strike, the fastball was just to show, I can’t believe that no major league hitter hasn’t pick on this

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:43 pm

when did lidge become mariano rivera?
when did victorino become mickey mantle?
when did dobbs become stan musial?

i just hate these guys soooo much.

pedro was shaky – very shaky – but recovered. the offense just can’t hit any soft-tossers. when pedro and his .100 career batting average knocks in your only 2 runs…not good.

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 10:44 pm

That sums it up pretty good.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 10:47 pm

You’re right about the Mets not hitting against soft tossers. If I were managing against them in the playoffs, 1 would throw nothing but Moyer type pitchers at them.

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Freakin’ Lidge. I can’t believe he’ll go through the whole season without blowing a save.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:46 pm

I really think he should be in the CY Young discussion. How many games back would the Phillies be right now without Lidge?

WrightsRight September 20, 2008 at 10:47 pm

i agree. Perhaps even MVP discussion.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Seriously I think you are right. Is there another pitcher for a contender in the NL that has meant more to his team?

sundaysection15 September 20, 2008 at 10:54 pm

if youre going on where the team would be without lidge, where would the mets be without santana? the guy is in the top 5 in innings pitched and hasnt lost since his first start after the allstar break. i think the mets would be 5 gb at the least minus johan

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:05 pm

No doubt but coming into the season the Phillies biggest weakness was their pen and it’s now their biggest strength. Coming into the Mets we were expected to have a top rotation with or without Santana. Obviously with Pedro stinking, Maine getting injured and Elduque being out for the season Santana has been great. Still we have managed to blow a lot of his games. The Phillies have yet to blow a Lidge game.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 20, 2008 at 11:10 pm

remember when billy wagner would always lobby for the mets to trade for brad lidge. too bad we didnt have any big time chips like michael “darrin erstad sometimes starts over me” bourne.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:11 pm

Very true. Or like when everyone wanted Gagne. Bullpen pitchers are always easy to figure out.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Different outcome probably if Hanley played. Just watch now, Hanley will be 100% when they play the Mets of course.

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 10:47 pm

. . . and pissed at us for some reason.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Yeah, and if they are within 3 games of a wildcard, they will play all out against us. I fear these damn fish more than anyone else as far as potential spoilers for us.

The Slider September 20, 2008 at 10:55 pm

I can only hope that you’re correct and that we are in first place with a 3 game lead going into that series.

I’m going to the Friday night game at Shea against the Fish. My sister got me 4 tix for my birthday for me and 3 of my best buddies from high school. I’m hoping it’ll be a good memory of my last game at Shea.

mylegshurt September 20, 2008 at 11:07 pm

Haven’t been to Shea in years — how much is a hot dog and a beer these days?

kdubs September 20, 2008 at 11:00 pm

I love Pedro the person, but I’ve completely given up on Pedro the pitcher. Seriously, as much as it pains me to say this, he’s done.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:02 pm

Yup.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 11:03 pm

I agree, but you can’t complain about a 3-2 loss as far as Pedro goes at this stage in the game. Tonight is really on the offense. Can’t score 9 runs every night.

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 11:06 pm

** 4-2** it’s late.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:07 pm

Well 4 runs in 6 innings is not even 5th starter material is it? That’s a 6 ERA?

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Agree, but I guess I just have the bar soooooo low for Pedro at this point that I’m just not expecting any better, so it’s no surprise and it’s about exactly what I expected. We also should have done much better on the offense side against the Braves pitchers.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Every rally was ended by a double play. How many did we have 3?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:06 pm

? 3-2?

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 11:08 pm

I was thinking of the damn Phillie score.

curiojeff September 20, 2008 at 11:06 pm

Still… when he was in his prime (pre-Mets), Pedro was the best pitcher I ever saw in my lifetime. (I’m 47.)

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:08 pm

I never got to see it but they say Ty Cobb was awesome and Cy Young must have been good. What’s your point?

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 11:12 pm

Doesn’t have to be a point. Nothing wrong with giving props to a HOF pitcher. Pedro “WAS” one of the greats. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help us now. We need to seriously think about waht to do with him, we can’t just sit around and wait for him to “Maybe” give us a good start.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:18 pm

I think we gave enough props to a HOF pitcher when we gave him his contract.
I have no idea what to do with him now. At this point he can’t start a playoff game if we make it. As sad as it is, who would you rather have start against the Cubs and Marlins? Pedro or Brandon Knight?

X-Man September 20, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Tough call. That’s really a flip of the coin. I would lean towards Knight though, don’t ask me why. Don’t we have other options besides Knight?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Not really being that Niese is already in there. I would have pitched him tonight instead of Pedro. I heard there was talk about doing that but….

stickguy September 20, 2008 at 11:31 pm

all things being equal (as in zero offense), it wouldn’t have relaly mattered. Might as well waste Pedro on the game where the O doesn’t show.

double digits tomorrow sounds about right.

ANd even though the Phils went back into first, the WC lead did not change.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:35 pm

Well you keep that a 3 run game and we may start playing things a little differently late but point taken. I expect 5 innings 3 runs from Pedro. We always seem to let in the 4+ before we get him out.

stickguy September 20, 2008 at 11:29 pm

didn’t see or hear any of the game tonight. Doesn’t look like I missed much.

Checked the box, and am even more amazed at the inept offensive “outburst” tonight, since Pedro knocked in both runs they scored!

Need to come out blazing tomorrow, and hopefully Pelfrey has 1 more good game in him. With any luck, it will be the last one that really matters!

Man, if they do (knocking on wood here) make the PS, it will be difficult to choose who makes the roster, especially with the pitchers.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:33 pm

I guess it will be a good problem to have but you are right. You know they will carry Pedro because of legacy but what do you do with him?

nyj0126 September 20, 2008 at 11:44 pm

He hurts the team. It’s a tough call. I don’t think they have what it takes to go through with it. He struggles. It’s like a guarantee he’ll give up a run in the 1st or if the 2nd if he’s lucky enough not to in the 1st. And it’s often multiple runs. And this shifts the momentum to the other team immediately as they usually allow them to get on top to start.

If I were Jerry, I’d choose someone else. Or I’d go with 3 pitchers. The negative to that though is that it can tire Johan, Ollie and Mike if the Mets get deep into the playoffs. The other three choices are Figueroa, Niese and Knight. I’d probably go with Figgy…

Gland September 20, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Lidge is a great example of why, in my opinion, pitchers should be considered as MVP candidates. He might not have had the best year of any pitcher (CY Young) but geez, think about where the Phillies would be without them. You can definitely make a case that he’s their MVP. Especially if he doesn’t blow a save this year.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:32 pm

Actually why can’t he be an option for Cy Young? He has yet to blow a save and has great numbers.

Gland September 20, 2008 at 11:38 pm

I think he’s an option but I don’t think he’d win it. His save numbers aren’t flashy enough like K-Rod. And the voters seem to like high win totals.

I don’t really think he’d win MVP. I just think it’s a good example of why a pitcher should be considered.

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 11:38 pm

the Fish had men on 2nd and 3rd on ZERO OUT, and two controversial calls later, came up empty. Meanwhile, a bad call in our game makes a 3-2 strike-em-out-throw-em-out game changing play into a 4-2 game. UNREAL……We need a break!

nyj0126 September 20, 2008 at 11:41 pm

Brad Lidge is definitely a great closer. In the playoffs, he may be a totally different pitcher though. I believe he was hurt for a little while too so it’s possible he should have even more saves. I don’t think he’ll win the Cy Young or come close because the competition is heavy though.

As for tonight’s game, this game proves more and more how Pedro Martinez hurts the Mets. The Mets lost 12 out of his 19 starts this season. His record sadly does no justice which is weird because Johan’s doesn’t either the other way around. His ERA keeps climbing and climbing. 4 runs in 6 innings? Come on.

Are you guy’s telling me Brandon Knight can’t do better? He gave up 5 innings with 2 ER even if it was a little rocky. I don’t know about throwing Pedro up against those Cubs – especially if they haven’t clinched the best record to that point. With today’s loss, Mike Pelfrey pitching tomorrow becomes more important because this team has to win tomorrow. The last thing we need are back-to-back losses to shift momentum.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:43 pm

While I agree I would much rather have Niese going tomorrow against the Braves than to have him going against the Cubs.

nyj0126 September 20, 2008 at 11:47 pm

Yup. He might get roughed up come Monday. The Mets idea may just be ”Let’s go for the more sure win.” I don’t know if that’s even true though because the Braves play well at home and the Mets are better at home. It’d be a good test for Niese to see if he could handle the Cubs in a potential postseason game – but the more wise choice would be to let him throw against the team he threw great against a week ago. Plus it gives Pelfrey an extra day rest and allows him to go back-to-back with Johan to end the season rather than having Niese or Knight squeeze in between them.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:42 pm

Question about our rotation. Anyone out there that would much rather have Niese going tomorrow and Pelfrey going Monday against the Cubs? I would feel much better with Pelfrey, Johan, Perez against the Cubs.

Gland September 20, 2008 at 11:43 pm

I’d be a little concerned to throw Niese tomorrow just because the Braves just saw him last week.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Cubs are not going to be easy for a rookie either. Who will he be facing in the Cubs?

metsmad22 September 20, 2008 at 11:47 pm

i’d prefer to have our 2nd best pitcher in a field that we struggle in, while having our rookie deal with a clinched team in shea……umpires cost us the division lead btw, that marlins game was disgusting.

Gland September 20, 2008 at 11:48 pm

I’m not sure, but I’m sure they will start giving some people some rest now that they’ve clinched.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:49 pm

I can see both sides. I guess take the win that you should get in Pelfrey tomorrow and worry about the Cubs Monday.

nyj0126 September 20, 2008 at 11:49 pm

It’s not even so much for this start, but is throwing Niese or Knight (in the event Niese does horrible) on Saturday a wise decision? Especially if the Marlins were not eliminated? Or the game counted for the Mets? By going with Pelfrey, Johan and Ollie it’s a stronger look. You go with your top 3 in a row. I’d rather get the weaker start out of the way tomorrow and hope for a win. And than have to deal with it on Thursday and Friday rather than Saturday.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 12:00 am

I think the Braves would have a better approach against Niese this time around. I think it would be better if he faces the Cubs who haven’t seen him and his 12-6 curve ball yet. But, who knows really. Get ready for a WILD ride.

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Ok I have not found it yet. Is there a site that has the projected matchups for the rest of the season?

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:53 pm

Never mind, Espn does. Duh.

Gland September 20, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Marquis vs. Niese
TBA vs. Santana
Zambrano Vs. Perez

That’s from Mets.com

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 12:00 am

Why would it not be Harden for the TBA? I have not been following them that closely right now. Are they resting him?
ESPN has this:
Sun, Sep 21 @ Atlanta 1:35 PM Pelfrey (13-10) Parr (1-0)
Mon, Sep 22 Cubs 7:10 PM Niese (1-0) Marquis (10-9)
Tue, Sep 23 Cubs 7:10 PM Santana (14-7) Harden (10-2)
Wed, Sep 24 Cubs 7:10 PM Perez (10-7) Zambrano (14-6)
Thu, Sep 25 Cubs 7:10 PM Martinez (5-6) Lilly (16-9)
Fri, Sep 26 Florida 7:10 PM Pelfrey (13-10) Volstad (5-3)

therealsince86 September 20, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Looking at the matchups we have to win Santana and Perez’s starts against the Cubs and who do they face in those games? Zambrano and Harden or course.

nyj0126 September 20, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Although the Phillies win today cost the Mets the temporary division lead that we know will keep flipping, let’s realize that this win has cooled off the Marlins. They would have won 10 straight.

If the Phillies win 4 out of their remaining 7 and the Mets win 5 out of their remaining 8, they’re eliminated. The Marlins advantage will obviously come in 4 out of their remaining 8 being against their direct competition.

The way to think about it should be what can we do to make sure not one of those Fri, Sat, Sun games counts for the Marlins.
The Marlins would have to gain two games on the Mets in the next 5 games for this to be possible. If the Mets were to go 3-2 in their next 5, it’d mean the Marlins would have to go 5-0.

This loss makes it harder for them to do so. This loss alleviates some of the pressure of just ”clinching playoff birth” in the wild card. I know I don’t want the wild card, but it’s still important. It’s important because if both the Mets and Phils clinch – we’re the division winner in the event of a tie.

Are we ”behind” right now? I don’t think we are. Same in the loss column. How do you judge a team that hasn’t played the same amount of games as the other? These Mets will get it done. As Marlon put, 92 wins does it. Maybe for a tie. 6-2 for the Mets, 5-2 for the Phillies.

MDMetsultra September 21, 2008 at 12:15 am

I see what you mean. I would like to see the Marlins eliminated before the final series, so we don’t have to worry about them.

Two-By-Four September 21, 2008 at 1:19 am

The Marlins were eliminated last year when the Mets faced them. It didn’t help, did it?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:00 am

can we go 6-2 for our final games though? And is there any reason to think the Phils won’t go 6-1 or 7-0?

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 12:03 am

Plenty of reasons to think the Phillies won’t. As for us going 6-2? I see a win tomorrow, split with the Cubs. Thats 3-2 heading into the Marlins series. We will see what that does. If the Marlins lose tomorrow it will be tough for them. If they win then we need to win.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 12:05 am

It will all come down to starting pitching, as usual. The big “X” factor of course remains the Mets BP. We just can’t afford to lose any games we are winning in the 7th, 8th or 9th.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:02 am

Also, the Brewers are NOT out of it yet. Not at all……The Mets really cannot afford to lose more than 2 of their last 8 games.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 12:04 am

That’s just not very realistic at all. Actually if we can manage to go 5-3 I would be quite happy.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:16 am

5 wins for the Mets would mean the Brewers would have to win every game just to tie which won’t happen. They just loss 8 out of 9, has a managerial chance, a ninth inning against the Cubs which drained all their hope and back-to-back losses to the Reds – including a close one with CC on the mound tonight.

Even if the Mets were to go 4-4, they’d eliminate both Florida and Houston in the process. The Brewers would have to go 6-1 just to tie – highly unlikely.

The Mets need 6 wins if they intend on taking this division because the Phillies got the Braves and Nats next week. If we’re lucky enough to see Florida squeeze out a win tomorrow, we’d still have to expect no less than 5-2 from the Phillies. This would mean for the Mets to tie which is good enough as a win, they’d have to go 5-3. Or 6-2 to play it safe.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:03 am

Basically, if we end up the WC, we will go very quietly in the Playoffs.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:05 am

Maybe, maybe not. Do you think when the Mets clinch the playoffs – they won’t be acting as if they just won the division? After all the pain this team and it’s fans suffered through last season and this season? This team has enough anxiety to forget about to party twice lol

Nothing happens too ”quietly” when you’re a pro club in New York.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 12:07 am

Why? Because we can’t beat the Cubs? Well if we could not beat them in the 1st round we could not beat them in the 2nd either. I know that they have tough pitching and it would be hard in a short series but our top 3 aren’t to shabby.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:03 am

I know I said to myself when there were ”17” to go that if the Mets could go 10-7, they could win the division. It’d command the Phillies to have to go 14-2 to beat it. When I said that last week it seemed like there’d be no way such a thing could be possible, but I guess I was wrong. The Mets are 4-5 in their last nine which could be better (although could be much worse), so it still is possible for the Mets to be 10-7 in those games. It’d mean the Mets would have to go 6-2 in their last eight. It’s not like we haven’t seen them do that before.

Each game matters as much as the next for the division going down the stretch now so let’s hope they just keep winning. At least tomorrow’s game can cancel out one problem… if the Mets win of course.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:06 am

the problem is that we are missing two MAJOR sparkplugs in Easley and Tatis, who gave us so many big game changing hits.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:04 am

Castillo curse still in effect btw……he continues to be the only starter to sport a losing record.

Gland September 21, 2008 at 12:06 am

They are going to rest both Harden and Zambrano. Zambrano got absolutely bombed yesterday, and Harden always has something wrong with them. I don’t think they’d sit them, but they’d definitely limit their work.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:08 am

BTW, Moyer against the Fish this year is undefeated with a 1.60 ERA.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 12:09 am

I know it’s a bad word but what is our mag#$ num#$er for the Wild Card?

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 12:13 am

There is nothing Magic about that number. They should change the name to: Jinx Number. Sorry, can’t seperate superstiton from baseball, they go hand in hand. Don’t know BTW.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:24 am

It would be 6.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 12:27 am

Can’t believe averything is FINALLY coming down to single digits! Enjoy this coming week guys,, nothing like a pennant race coming down to the wire, not for the weak! lol

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:31 am

six… the mets will get that done as long as they play .500+ ball. marlins/astros eliminated with 4, brewers eliminated with 6 mets wins.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 12:22 am

Great sports day tomorrow. Mets pennant-race baseball and my NY Giants going for a 3-0 start. Gotta love it. Going to Lombardi’s for great pizza and a few brewskis.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:27 am

The Reds sweeping the Brewers is very big tomorrow. It’ll leave a dent in the Brewers. They won’t over come that. With the Phillies-Marlins game, a loss on either side is big.

Now what would be bigger? A Phillies loss? Or both a Marlins and Brewers loss? This is in the event the Mets win of course because it would hurt bad to go 1 1/2 back of the division with a week to go.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:29 am

phils loss and brewers loss and mets win

ridethesnake September 21, 2008 at 8:43 am

A Met win is all that is important. If the Mets win the rest of their games, they win the division. That’s all you need to know.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:46 am

proof of why individual stats DON’T indicate winning baseball:

Tampa Bay Rays Offensive Leaders have a
.276 batting average (yikes!!!)
31 HR
96 RBI
.382 OBP

NY Yankees leaders:
.310 batting average
35 HR
101 RBI
.392 OBP

The Yankees have SIX players who have better BA than the BEST BA player on the rays. SIX!
The Yankees have a better OBP as a team.
The Yankees have a better SLG % as a team.

So from now on, when someone says “castillo is just better b/c of his slugging, OBP, and BA numbers say so” then remind then that this same principle applies to the fact that the Yankees won the AL East and the Rays will miss the playoffs….OH WAIT, it’s about more than stats! It’s chemistry!

Two-By-Four September 21, 2008 at 1:36 am

It’s starting pitching.

tinathemetsgrl September 21, 2008 at 2:39 am

I really wish I could dislike Lidge, but I have a huge crush on him, but I definitely root for the opposing team when it’s the 9th inning. Damn Marlins for not stealing, bunting, base-hitting anything off Lidge tonight. And not hitting off Romero and Madson who looked shaky? Yeah, good job guys. Should’ve saved some of those runs from Friday for tonight.

As for the Mets, I really didn’t think they had a chance with Pedro up there. I’m really done with that guy, and it’s sad. The RBI double was nice, but the batzzzzzzzz thx to Ace Senor Campillo….Need I say more.

rustyjr September 21, 2008 at 7:23 am

comeon tina we got wright murph evans hell we even got that hot latin from manhatten figgy (okay okay i know he’s from brooklyn so sue me ) lol

tinathemetsgrl September 21, 2008 at 6:26 pm

haha, thats true. i like church. we have a good looking team, i agree. lol

rustyjr September 21, 2008 at 7:25 am

by the way guys i have almost no confidence in pedro these days yeah he bounced back & scored our only runs but we can’t sign him next year and i think he has to be in the pen when we get to the post season. on another note – lets go mets!!! we can still win this division !!! and although id rather us be 20 games up this is exciting!!!

Flushing_is_Burning September 21, 2008 at 9:25 am

love and respect Pedro what he has done before he came to the Mets, but based on recent outings, giving him a deal for next year would be like signing castillo for 4 years.

curiojeff September 21, 2008 at 9:26 am

Pedro in the pen??? Are you high? The 1st inning out there is always his worst! You can’t just flip starters and relievers at the drop of a hat. They’re two different kinds of animals.

ridethesnake September 21, 2008 at 8:43 am

If the Mets win the rest of their games, they win the division. That’s all anyone needs to know.

Flushing_is_Burning September 21, 2008 at 9:27 am

whos pitching for the Mets today?

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 12:15 am

Or idiot fans who don’t have a clue. What exactly is Cohen listen stats?
As for your idiotic Castillo comment, who started yesterday?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:25 am

the mets have a sub .500 record when luis plays. not jose, david, the carlos’, schneider, castro, evans, murph, easly, argenis, endy, not one of those guys can say the same. the point of baseball is to win, and with castillo playing, we fail more than we succeed.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:29 am

I know. I agree with you. What do the Mets do though? It’s either Luis or Argenis. I just don’t know if Argenis Reyes is capable of being an ”every day” starter in the playoffs. I see a platoon of these two guy’s being realistic. The Mets are very desperate at 2B right now. If Valentin weren’t cut loose earlier in the year, it’s possible he’d be the starter right now lol

If the Mets had initially called Murphy up as a 2B in a continuation of what he was trying to develop in the minor’s, than the story may be different. Even if Tatis were healthy, I don’t think they’d give him a chance. Let’s hope we get Damion back.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 12:30 am

argenis for now, batting 8th, easley if we make the post season.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:36 am

As long as he is healthy of course… I hope he is. If Damion is on the playoff roster, there’s really no reason for Luis Castillo to even be there. Argenis is a much better sub because he’s better defensively and has more spped to pinch run.

What kind of pitches would Argenis be seeing batting 8th? And can we expect Brian to drive in runs batting 7th? When Castro’s batting 7th it’s a little less of a problem…

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 12:38 am

I want to see Argenis keep playing so the issue of Luis drops. Luis is a lot like Pedro… Deterioating skills, old, overpaid and useless. It’s almost to the point where Marlon Anderson is a better option there because his cold bat still may do better than his

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 12:38 am

I believe Jerry already said Castillo will play every remaining games. There is no ense in discussing Castillo anymore, like him or hate him, jinx or no jinx, he’s what we got and let’s get behind him and hopefully he’ll do something. Next season? I don’t want him anywhere near a baseball diamond in NY, unless of course it’s with the Yankees! lol

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 12:41 am

**sense**
