Health: Maine throws Sim-Inning, Getting Closer
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 21, 2008 9:47 am

John Maine threw 24 pitches to five batters in a simulated inning prior to yesterday’s game, during which he hit just 87 mph with his fastball.

Assuming he feels well today, Maine will likely throw a second simulated inning tomorrow at Shea Stadium – after which the team will determine if he should be activated, and be able to contribute to the team’s bullpen.

I’m very scared about this. I hope they know what they’re doing. This seems lose - lose to me.

he needs surgery. Bone spurs are not a big deal but clearly 87 in not 94. just forget about him for this year.

he will bounc back next year and win 15 plus.

i think the SNY gun is a little fast…maine’s average fastball has been 91-92 for his career

I was in Atlanta yesterday and when the Mets came out to stretch I yelled at Maine asking him how he felt. He gave me the side ways thumb up, so I don’t think we should be counting on him too much down the stretch.

Wow, he can’t even lift his thumb all the way up?

This is bad…

Is Maine at 87mph better than Pedro at 82mph?

Not if he alters his mechanics and ends up doing some real damage to his elbow, arm, shoulder, legs, etc.

I gotta say, if not for the future of the team, shut the guy down. I’d hate to see this guy’s career ruined because of shortsightedness.

this post seems a lot more optimistic than what i gleaned from SNY’s coverage during last night’s game. i don’t think he will be a factor.
