woo hoo, pregame! good start mets, let’s keep em coming!

magic00700magic September 21, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Fact:

Mets can not rely on their bullpen. If the Mets make the playoffs, this problem will persist. The Mets need a productive Aaron Heilman to go far in the playoffs. Aaron has one of the better arms. We need him to step up. A good outing today would have gone far. I was totally in support of brining him in. It was a great atbat off him, that made the difference. The pitches were not that bad.

Fact:

The offense is our strength, but they still fail to tack on runs when opportunity presents itself. If the Mets are going to succeed into the playoffs, the offense needs to pick up.

Will the Mets make the playoffs? If they do, it will be more about the Cubs resting players and the Marlins being without Hanley Ramirez that makes it more likely that they win.

I root for the Mets, but I keep getting the feeling I am watching the same tape where a car crash happens at the end. I keep wanting a different outcome, but its always the same.

metsfan42793 September 21, 2008 at 1:56 pm

go mets

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 1:58 pm

prado is a jerk

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 1:58 pm

Who knew you should fear a dude named Kelly

DavidDog September 21, 2008 at 1:58 pm

wow, castillo. wals on a fastball strike right down the middle, what a pathetic player. that was the most undeserving and unencouraging rbi i’ve ever seen. but I’LL TAKE IT! let’s go Pelph!

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:01 pm

A bases loaded walk inspires a poster to call him a pathetic player.

Yeah, Argenis surely would have hit a grand slam WAYYY over the center field fence.

Castillo haters who make asinine posts like this, you are on the verge of seriously needing psychological help.

DavidDog September 21, 2008 at 2:08 pm

i wasnt campaigning for argenis reyes (although I’d prefer him defensively). i just abhor castillo right now. and i thought that was funny… clearly even he knows the only way he could get on base/drive in a run is with a walk (and btw, his much-mentioned obp since his return is somewhere around .200).

also, i may criticize mets player for their output, but i refrain from insulting fellow posters

(as i type, nice double play, although SOMEONE almost f’d it up…)

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Even while struggling this month, Castillo’s OBP is still .300 for the month.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Well, I guess I am just SO sick of reading the ridiculous criticism of Castillo. Sorry for insulting you personally. I understand that some folks are negative by nature, and some folks feel better about themselves by criticizing major leaguers.

I just cannot fathom the criticism of Castillo. His contract is a joke, he cannot hit much anymore, his defensive range is diminished, but he is our ONLY option at 2B right now. Not the best option, the ONLY one. Hopefully Easley returns for the postseason.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Pelfrey’s velocity seems to be down

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Man, Pelf loves these 3-2 counts

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:01 pm

It’s just never easy

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Damn David with the encouraging peptalk. He musta doubled up on the Vitamin h20

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Pelfrey looks off today, he doesn’t have much life on his fastball.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:03 pm

no joe simpson…kelly johnson can’t break joe dimaggio’s record…

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:04 pm

Ump is tough on both sides today (again).

This ain’t Tom Glavine late 90’s era corner strikes.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:05 pm

both pitchers getting squeezed

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Come on, Pelfry. You can do this.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:05 pm

ouch

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Come on Pelfrey.

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 2:06 pm

THat ball was right over the plate

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:06 pm

do they EVER stop playing that stupid music?? I’d think the fans are sick of it.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:06 pm

damn

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 2:07 pm

wow – having real control problems in this first inning.

EV September 21, 2008 at 2:07 pm

CRAP!!!!!

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:07 pm

Ump is horrible today….can they call the game on bad umping?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:07 pm

where did he get hit??

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:07 pm

WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 2:07 pm

This is the smallest zone I’ve ever seen.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Nice play boys, settle down Pelf!

EV September 21, 2008 at 2:08 pm

YEAAAA GREAT DOUBLE PLAY!!!!!!!

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Nice double play.
O.K., forget about it and just score a few more runs here in the second.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:08 pm

great dp…minimize the damage…hopefully pelf settles down

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:08 pm

HUGE DP THERE!!!!!!

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Wow both starters should be out by the 3rd inning with 106 pitches.

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 2:08 pm

i have a very bad feeling about this game and about this upcoming week

remember last year when the mets won 3 in a row in the midst of the collapse and everybody thought they had righted the ship only to win more game the rest of the season

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Don’t try to predict and compare, just let the games play out.

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Dude, you have a bad feeling about EVERY game

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:10 pm

totally unrelated post, but pennington is making the patriot defense look like a pop warner squad

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Too bad the Jets don’t have a QB like him

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:11 pm

lol

DavidDog September 21, 2008 at 2:13 pm

YEAH! GO FINS!

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 2:11 pm

The ump is an arrogant pr*ck. See him busting up Warthen’s meeting as soon as he got there?

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:11 pm

wow…smallest….strikezone….ever

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 2:11 pm

holy crap. we don’t need this kind of effort from pelf. let’s get going here!!!

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Silver lining is Parr is looking worse than Pelf so far. I fully expect Pelfrey to settle down.

EV September 21, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Wow, we caught a HUGE BREAK there on that DP.

DavidDog September 21, 2008 at 2:12 pm

btw, since people are insulting me personally for my disapproval of castillo, let me just note that was another bad call going our way, since the great castillo couldn’t quite make a 10-foot throw to reyes without pulling him off the base…

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Yes..I’m not a fan of Castillo either. If pitchers actually threw him strikes, he’d be a .200 hitter. I’d take Argenis’ lack of offense but very nice defense.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Good thing you aren’t the Met manager….

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:17 pm

ok..moot point really, Castillo isn’t here next year.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Nor is Argenis, and I think we can agree that Murphy plays and bats 2nd next year….

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Agreed

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:14 pm

You have now criticized Castillo for drawing a bases loaded walk to drive in a run, and for starting a big double play.

You are opening yourself up for criticism with these very, very silly posts.

The idea is to score runs and to get outs. Castillo has driven in one run and started a double play resulting in TWO outs.

PLEASE try and understand what is going on on the field.

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:16 pm

eh, he’s making valid points. It’s not as if he is criticizing Castillo for those 2 plays, but he is using them to illustrate Castillo’s problems overall.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:18 pm

OK, I am clearly fighting a losing battle here….

He is illustrating Castillo’s problems by citing him driving in a run and starting a double play.

This is ridiculous. Learn baseball.

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Missing the point, you’re looking at the end result and not what happened. Bottom line, Castillo is a horrible defender (check the stats, don’t feel like pulling them up every time) and a mediocre hitter. Obviously Argenis is a bad hitter, but I, personally, would take his defense.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:20 pm

People are just so angry that he is not an allstar but makes a lot of money. It was a bad contract. I would much rather have Easley out there right now but that’s not an option and neither is Awful Reyes.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:21 pm

Wright, do you realize that we have pitchers with a better OBP than Awful Reyes?

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:23 pm

We have frigin hot dog vendors with better OBPs….

And he ain’t Ozzie Smith out there either…

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:23 pm

He wasn’t going to be an All-Star, thats not what annoys me. It’s that he isn’t all that good. I was a huge fan of Castillo back in FLA and even MIN, because he brought defense and speed, but he is not the same player anymore. Argenis brings defense and speed, not a good hitter, but we did pretty good with him in the lineup. Also, its not like I want him to start next year just get some starts this year, maybe even platoon.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Here’s the thing, I understand their point to some extent but here’s how I look at it.

Awful Reyes
Defense 7/10
Hitting 1/10

Castillo
Defense 5/10
Hitting 5/10

Thus Castillo is a better choice.

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:26 pm

fair enough, though I would say Castillo’s defense is more of a 2-3. His stats say he is the worst fielding 2b in baseball.

DavidDog September 21, 2008 at 2:27 pm

dude are you watching the game? the mets got two big breaks, as even our sny announcers unanymously declared. i’m just pointing out the two best things castillo has done today (and in the last few weeks) were actually two clear scr ew-ups…

dont get me wrong, he’s in there and i want him to do well. i just think he’s really bad right now — look, i used to watch this guy down in fla and the only reason his numbers were so good WAS his outstanding speed – which allowed him to sneak infield singles, steal tons of bases, thus putting pressure on pitchers and defenses – he used to be a great fielder, but although he had a good eye for pitches he could never really hit a lick

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:31 pm

Drawing a bases loaded walk is not a screwup, nor is starting a double play, EVEN IF THE THROW WAS A LITTLE HIGH THE DOUBLE PLAY WAS COMPLETED.

It is getting very hard not to hurl insults at your ridiculous argument.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Drop it Kingman, every year the Mets have at least 1 player that the fans unfairly view as the antichrist and think they would be better starting for that guy. It helps them cope and actually think they are important.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Yeah you are 100% right and I will truly try to follow this advice.

Just wonder who it will be next year who get the wrath of the irrational.

DavidDog September 21, 2008 at 2:37 pm

btw, i am also not an envious repressed negative person, believe me – i have a good career and dont give a shoot what a player makes. i just want my team to be the best it can be, and castillo really depresses me in there – and his hitting is not a 5/10 (to a.reyes’ 1/10). they are both awful hitters, and with our pitching problems and abundance of induced ground-balls, i too might take a better defense. im not sure however. it’s not like I’m sayin in capslock PLAY ARGENIS REYES, just expressing how bad castillo looks to me right now

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:38 pm

As long as Castillo is here it will be him. I would actually love to see Heilman and Castillo traded just to see what would happen. They would prob. be stupid enough to turn on Wright then. Oh yeah, they already do that.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:40 pm

That’s just not true. Castillo’s BA, OBP, OPS, SLG and anything else you can name are at least 5 times the hitter as Awful Reyes. Granted 5 *1 is still 5 but he is still that much better.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:42 pm

The anti-Wright stuff is too much for me to even comprehend.

He is the best offensive player our system has ever produced, has 4 great years behind him and a HOF career so far.

I mean, I guess the anti-Castillo/pro-Argenis folks have tiny shreds of sense in their position, but the anti-Wright folks are just bizarre.

Wright88 September 21, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Never actually watched him enough to say, but Strawberry was supposed to be a beast. Still, Wright will probably do it longer and be more consistent (hopefully)

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Oh poor baby, did Castillo actually get on base and piss you off?

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:13 pm

poop

Eggman September 21, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Umps GAVE us 2 runs at least so far. Castillo was strike three and Jose was off the bag on the DP.

Almost as bad as the call when the Marlins guy got called out last night.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:15 pm

i don’t know about that….that marlin call last night was by far one of the worst calls i’ve seen….

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:13 pm

2 horrible AB’s by Reyes.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 2:15 pm

this freaking pitcher cant even throw a strike and reyes pops up. come on already.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Haha, Met announcers starting to rip fanship in other cities..

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:16 pm

what are they saying?

EV September 21, 2008 at 2:20 pm

They were ripping the Braves fans for thinking that Murphy’s foul ball was out against the screen.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:20 pm

sweet…joe simpson actually mentioned it too, i’m surprised

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 2:16 pm

3-0 mil.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 2:18 pm

GOODBYE !!! That’s the way to do it, David!

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:18 pm

DAVID WRIGHT DAVID WRIGHT DAVID WRIGHT!!!!!!!!

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:18 pm

DAVID! All of our runs have come with 2 outs, no?

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 2:18 pm

its outta here!

big one there wright, two out rbi

EV September 21, 2008 at 2:18 pm

D WRIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Another huge home run for Wright that nobody will cite when talking about his clutch numbers, because it wasn’t in the 9th inning.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:20 pm

you notice that not many of them are posting anything right now…the debbie downers don’t show up when things are going well

DavidDog September 21, 2008 at 2:19 pm

that’s what he needed: the braves!!!

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:19 pm

21-6 fins

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:19 pm

YEAH DAVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Why does MLB.com take so long to update? I heard its 4-0 Brew

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:19 pm

LOL. GARBAGE RBI’S!!!!! USELESS!!!!!

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Wow, Delgado is crushing balls.

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 2:20 pm

we need to win this game big time (i know i’m stating the obvious)

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Obvious but so true. They need to win for so many reasons. We gotta keep the pressure on Philly. I don’t like how they take first back after 1 night. We need to send a msg to this stupid Braves team that they;re not in our head.

Big game!

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:23 pm

the braves are playing us seriously. Why would they bother changing pitchers if they we’re out of it?

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:24 pm

i don’t think it’s in bobby cox’ dna to lay down for the mets

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 2:30 pm

looked like Parr was giving Cox a little lip. Betcha he’s not a Brave next year

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 2:23 pm

What are you guys talking about? David Wright is so unclutch! I read it here on MetsBlog.

Oh, wait, I forgot to put it in all caps:

DWRIGHT IS SO UNCLUTCH HE IS WORSE THAN AROD WHAT A PATHETIC JOKE JERRY SHOULD SIT HIM FOR A YEAR.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:24 pm

lol for a year? Maybe sit him out for a day if we weren’t in this race. but who the hell said that?

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 2:25 pm

I was exaggerating for comic effect.

Perhaps not enough comic effect.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Yikes! NYP, now you know how I felt last night when no one got my sarcasm regarding the OPS thing….

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Ha. I think we need, like, a giant clown icon or something that we can attach to sarcastic posts. Just to prevent misunderstandings.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:26 pm

I’ve never seen anyone as lost at the plate and in the field (oh wait, there was A-Rod 2 yrs ago) as Wright last week. I’m sure everyone thought he would get out of it, but it had to worry you if you were a true Met fan.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 2:34 pm

I think we were all concerned. But David has always been streaky (like probably half the big players in baseball), so I think it was pretty likely he would straighten out in time. I’m glad that time was sooner than later, because we need him.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:26 pm

you forgot:

OMAR IS AN IDIOT!!!! FIRE HIM NOW!!!!!!

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:28 pm

BTU IS JERY JERRRY OR R U JERRY??

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 2:32 pm

HELLO JERRY? THIS IS JOSE REYES. CAN I COME IN LATE TO WORK TODAY?

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:37 pm

NYP, with your all-caps name, you may have the inside track as the heir to the whole U R JERRY video game fortune…..

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 2:38 pm

LOL. Excellent, because that game is going to make a fortune. Especially with Larry Flint in charge of marketing.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:37 pm

YO SHUT UP!

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 2:39 pm

I hope you are looking in the mirror at you and your well-used bong while shouting that…..

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:27 pm

SCREW FRENCHIE!!!!!!!!!!!

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:28 pm

Wow, Cox is trying to win this. What is he crazy?? Is this run THAT important that you hit for your long man?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Another annoying thing about this game is that we send a used up Braves pen on the road to Philly tonight. Not cool.

BTW, are the Mets the only team Gotay hits?

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 2:29 pm

ruben gotay, anderson hernandez, this is just getting ridiculous

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 2:31 pm

you forgot Jeff Keppinger.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:30 pm

rueban gotay….anderson hernandez….mike jacobs….all jerks

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:30 pm

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:31 pm

nice dp again….btw i hate the red top braves uniforms

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:31 pm

Nice play Delgado!

This game reminds me so much of the 13-10 game against the Nats 2 weeks ago. Mets kept giving Pelfrey runs and he kept giving them right back.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:31 pm

Nice Cdig.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:32 pm

i like it

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Bills and Pats losing to bad teams…

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:34 pm

don’t tell anyone…but the pats might be a bad team…bad qb/severely overrated defense/soft o-line…the signs are there

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:35 pm

but to their defense (that makes me naseus) they;re missing lamont jordan, Maroney and obviously mr GQ

mr.gee21 September 21, 2008 at 2:44 pm

So are the Giants (for the moment).

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 2:35 pm

How the heck are the Giants losing to the freaking Bungles???

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:36 pm

Church looks completely lost.

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Church is smokin the ball these days…hittin ropes, son

garfios September 21, 2008 at 2:37 pm

He has became an automatic out

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Stupid Slappy!

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 2:39 pm

what’s the possibility of big pelf getting a 1-2-3 inning here?

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 2:39 pm

church/castillo are pretty much 2 guaranteed outs

garfios September 21, 2008 at 2:41 pm

he has to put a 0 here, without the drama

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Yup from this point we just have to match.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Seems like no one but Santana has had their “stuff” recently, doesn’t it?

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:43 pm

still a jerk

metsfan42793 September 21, 2008 at 2:44 pm

what going on with pelfrey. this is the second maybe third straight time he hasnt done good

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Innings but, innings. It’s called the wall.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Well he was great against the Nats, they just couldn’t get him a run

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 2:45 pm

These are the type of games that makes you want to throw the t.v the window

mr.gee21 September 21, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Big TV, small windows. Gotta’ protect your investments.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 2:45 pm

pelf isn’t looking to hot, might want to get someone in the pen ready. before it gets out of hand. HAHA, did you read what I just said? I must be drunk or something, I said to get someone ready in the pen…hahahaha

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 2:47 pm

that was the most horribly gramatical thing i’ve ever written…

garfios September 21, 2008 at 2:48 pm

That is funny

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 2:53 pm

LOL…good one

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 2:45 pm

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Slappy McGlove Hands!!

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:47 pm

great d so far

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Could the league be on to Pelfrey ?

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 2:49 pm

I doubt it. More than likely, he’s getting exhausted because he’s pitching way more innings than he did last year…

garfios September 21, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Pelfrey is going to give up this lead, he is not fooling anybody

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Good job Cdig, Castillo and Pelfrey.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:48 pm

good job there Pelf!

garfios September 21, 2008 at 2:50 pm

Good job? They are ripping one line drive after another.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:51 pm

I dunno I wasn’t watching the game

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:49 pm

He “should” have a cruise inning here with the bottom of the order…

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Isn’t it obvious. Pelfrey hasn’t thrown a single pitch over 91 mph. He’s usually a 94-96mph guy on his fastball. He seems somewhat tired

mr.gee21 September 21, 2008 at 2:50 pm

We have the best TV announcers. That is awesome, Keith and Ron laughing at footage of Gary taking a pre-game nap.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 2:52 pm

Gary Cohen: Emmy winning, well rested broadcaster.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:54 pm

maybe, but i might say that ronny is the total package

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:52 pm

Didn’t this pitcher play 3rd for the Phillies last year?

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 2:52 pm

We Need to WIN this game I don’t like our chance with the Cubs even if they rest there starters

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Every Met game is basically the same formula. Score 3-5 early runs, keep giving them slowly back and the lineup goes to sleep in innings 4-7 against relievers…

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 2:53 pm

endy chavez needs a spot start. church is awful right now.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:53 pm

come on jose

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Reyes looks like crap at the plate today!

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Yea, it’s not the lack of production, more the horrible AB’s from Reyes, Church that’s bothering me. Make the guys throw strikes.

mr.gee21 September 21, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Heck, even Murphy is having an off day.

Thank goodness for David Wright!

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 2:54 pm

lets hope Pelf can go 1-2-3

garfios September 21, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Nuñez should not be throwing 1-2-3 innings, the Mets sleeping again

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:56 pm

28-6 dolphins on a trick play….

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:56 pm

As a Jet fan, I’m not sure whether this is supposed to make me feel great or utterly depressed :)

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 2:59 pm

yeah it’s a conundrum…i live in boston though, so i gotta root against any team from this city just because of the wretched fans

DavidDog September 21, 2008 at 3:02 pm

as a Fins fan, I am ecstatic and in utter disbelief

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 2:56 pm

You know, it’s a wonder we’re still in this race. Lost Wagner, Maine, Tatis, Easley is questionable, all in the last month. Tatis and Easley had some big hits for us and gave some creditability to the bottom third of the lineup.
I’m a little nervous with what we’ve got left, if we do get into post season….

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 2:58 pm

They’ve had more than their share of injuries this year (despite people saying everyone has theirs) but good teams find a way to win.

Alas, no one will feel sorry for you. With the exception of Maine and Church, when you sign and rely on older guys, this shouldn’t shock anyone.

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 2:59 pm

We also lost about 27 left fielders this year to injury.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:03 pm

lol – Yeah, I think only Evans/Murphy left standing, who aren’t even outfielders. And of course, Endy.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:57 pm

our offense can destroy starters but can;t hit these crappy bullpens

garfios September 21, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Is a doubles day

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Ok the Giants are losing and the Mets are playing like its a blow out

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 2:59 pm

playing like it’s a blowout? What the heck does that mean?

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 3:12 pm

After they scored the 4 runs it seems like they think they have the game in the bag and going thru the motions and I am Giants fan and they are losing

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Is Pelfrey going to have even 1 clean inning???

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 2:58 pm

screw Frenchie!!!!!!!!!!

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 2:58 pm

man, this reyes/murphy top of the order thing is not working out so well this weekend.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:00 pm

strike…

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:01 pm

6-1 Brew, gotta win, not let this be a race again.

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:01 pm

oh crap. it’s Greg (to the moon) Norton

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 3:05 pm

not a bad reference, KinersK

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:01 pm

very inconsistent umping.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:02 pm

This is game is like a trip to the dentist.. Seriously uncomfortable

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Which Met games aren’t?

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:03 pm

This is true…

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:04 pm

nice job beltran!

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Exhale

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Wow, Pelf just smacked Frenchies a$$, I think I just lost more respect for him.

Gary Busey September 21, 2008 at 3:14 pm

LMAO WHAT? ew

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Pelfrey showing guts at least, even though he doesn’t appear to have his best fastball today.
So we’re looking at a new pitcher now for the Braves? Time to tack on some more runs for Pelf.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:07 pm

I don’t even have this game on TV out here… I’m stuck watching Gamecast today. Pelfrey doesn’t appear to be sharp today does he?

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Not so far…..He’s going to have to use guyts b/c I don’t think his fastball is there today.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:09 pm

not really, he’s gutting it out but he’s missing a couplea mph on his fastball and his control is off

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Cincy’s getting killed, this is a must win!!!!!!!

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:10 pm

This is a huge game…. I’m stuck out here watching Bills Raiders… I’m glued to the computer.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:10 pm

come on and hit this damn bullpen already!

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:11 pm

With the way the Braves are piecing this game together (and with the Brewers leading), the Mets have GOT to hold on to win.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:12 pm

weren’t the mets the worst power hitting team in the majors earlier this season?…now they’ve homered in 23 of the last 29

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:12 pm

A baserunner…finally. Walk Beltran to get to Church. They are onto us. Ugh.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Didn’t one of the Met announcers just claim that Kelly couldn’t field to save his life?

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:13 pm

crap….when you’re cold you’re cold

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Church has not been effective at all lately.

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:15 pm

To be fair, that was a hard hit ball that took a good play to get him out.

cousinrk September 21, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Yeah this game is starting to scare me. Its got that feel like many of these other past games where they are holding on to a 2 run lead and just sit on it until the other team comes back. They got to get some more runs soon.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:15 pm

This is gonna be Pelf’s last inning. He won;t get an AB next inning….I don’t hink.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Unless things go south he will go one more. He’s at 81 pitches. If he stays under 100 this inning he will be back out.

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Slappy needs to get on base so Pelf can bunt

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Well, at least the Pats and Bills are losing right now…

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:17 pm

35-13 fins….on another trick play

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:23 pm

OMG, the Fins put up 35 against the same defense Jets put up 10 against last Sunday. Schottenheimer Jr. needs to get his head out of his a**

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:24 pm

to be fair the dolphins have used the direct snap to the rb about 5 times now….it looks like they’re out-bellicheking bellichek

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Churchy is hitting .203 in September going into this game. They’ve gotta start Endy in right one of these days, or something. Only 2 ABs for Endy in September so far, and that’s just not right. I realize he’s no big-time hitter, but he’s been in the middle of a lot of rallies in his time with the Mets… and he’s amazing to watch in the outfield. Give Church a day tomorrow.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Agreed. I don’t think he needs more AB’s. I think to be cautious with his concussion, he could use a day of rest. Also, now that the righty lefty platooning is over, this would light a fire under him a bit.

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 3:17 pm

did anyone see the sign at the start of the bot of the 5th in the stands? it said something about “wanted: heimlich expert…” i didn’t get to see the whole thing…

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Nice quick, but scary 1-2-3 for Pelf. This is exhilarating.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:21 pm

nice 123 inning… We needed that..

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Maybe we can give Church a day off when Johan starts next. Can’t rest him with Niese on the mound against the Cubs.

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Why not? We need his 0-for-4 in the lineup?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:22 pm

does he hit with a runner or two on?? He finally looks like he found his stuff.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 3:22 pm

no hits since the 2nd inning? come on guys!

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Lets score some runs already!!!!!!

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:23 pm

castillo on fire!

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:26 pm

2 walks, lol

garfios September 21, 2008 at 3:24 pm

We need a rally here.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Lets score some runs so they can stop talking about roids

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:25 pm

castillo needs to steal here

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:25 pm

How bout some runs.. Cmon boys!

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Yeah, I’m with Ronnie on that. Screw ESPN and them having first say on teams schedules. No way you should have to play a Sunday night game in NY when you’ve got to catch a plane the next day for the west coast to play a Monday night game.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:26 pm

the espn/fox blackout rules and schedule changes are one of the worst things to happen to baseball ever

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Agreed. Their productions are crap (although the Mets rule on ESPN sunday night).

I hate the Yankees, but it doesn’t seem right to have Miller and Morgan calling the last game in da Bronx.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:30 pm

totally agree….

jeez pelf….taking bunting lessons from ollie

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:26 pm

perfect solution. Lay down the bunt

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:27 pm

bobby cox looks like the kool-aid man in this shirt

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Nice. That’s one way to get the lately light hitting 7th and 8th hitters on.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:28 pm

come on Pelf!

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Cmon Pelf..

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Pelf shoulda done a little less laughing when he came up to bat and more focusing on laying one down!

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 3:30 pm

How hard is it to Bunt ?REALLY now

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I swear the only two on this team who can bunt are Pedro and Endy…

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:30 pm

fundamentals, fundamentals

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 3:30 pm

it’s unbelievable when a pitcher can’t get a bunt down

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Pitchers who can’t bunt…that’s just bad baseball.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:30 pm

ugh. it’s all up to jose now, unless Castillo has the balls to steal 3rd

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Sickening.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

crap…thought that was falling

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

still no hits since the second inning

that would have been a run if the bunt had been made

garfios September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

the picther didn’t throw a freaking strike and he strike out

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Damn!

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Two straight walks and Jose can’t take a pitch. More bad baseball. C’mon MURPHY

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

never mind. I need another beer.

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Are you serious? Jose absolutely smoked that ball…

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Smoked it into the left fielder’s glove. His approach stinks. You got a wild pitcher up there and you come up hacking.

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

jose did rip that one…unlucky

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I know fans can be overly critical, it’s a hard game. But how hard is it to lay down a bunt??

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Jose can’t seem to buy a hit lately… God, we need some runs…

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 3:32 pm

unreal, come on already! NO hits since the 2nd. 2 men on with no outs and we don’t get crap? come on, seriously.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:32 pm

no outs 2 on, and none of them come in

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:33 pm

they didn’t even move up a base

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:32 pm

this is exactly how the mets have lost all those game late in games this season, because the offense goes to sleep against NOTHING pitchers

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:32 pm

They’re bailing these pen guys out swinging at balls

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Looks like we’re gonna have to do this the hard way.
Hold this two run lead with the BP. Gulp….

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:33 pm

This is junk. Two walks to start the inning, then you can’t get the bunt down, don’t get anyone home. Ugh.

das320 September 21, 2008 at 3:33 pm

YOU DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE TO SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 3:34 pm

This team needs to play with somekind of fire if they want to make the playoffs

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:34 pm

There’s your turning point for when they blow this

So glad to see the offense playing with a sense of urgency

UGH

Unworthy of post-season baseball

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 3:37 pm

“A sense of urgency”??? What does that even mean??

Just because they’re not hitting well doesn’t mean they lack “urgency”

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:48 pm

I love the bunker-mentality people who always defend, defend, defend

garfios September 21, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Get a 1-2-3 here and redeem your self.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:35 pm

we need a minimum of at least 2 more runs

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:35 pm

See what happens when the ump starts calling strikes..

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Brews are awake I see

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:36 pm

100 pitches, he can start the next one too

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:37 pm

one more inning one more inning, he’s got my vote

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:37 pm

quick 1-2-3 by Pelf!

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Wow. Good Pelf finally showed up.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 3:37 pm

atta boy big pelf. now WAKE UP bats!

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Have to hand it to Pelfry. Didn’t have his best stuff, limited thedamage, settle down. He’s really maturing into what I hope will be a great ML pitcher for years to come – for the Mets, of course.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Cmon, we need to put Frenchy away and get the big bats up next inning

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:38 pm

dwright needs to get it started here, enough, let’s put this game away

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:40 pm

that’s what i’m talking about, steal second now

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:39 pm

As suming Pelfrey’s spot does not come up this inning then I would start him in the 7th. He seems to be settling down obviously.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:39 pm

C’mon boys, lets get some now!!!

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Awesome!!! He’s settled down nicely after shaky start… Pelf is maturing right before our very eyes… Great to see.. Cmon, lets get some runs boys. WAKE UP!!!

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Way to go DW!!!!

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Like to get another inning out of Pelfrey here with a bad part of Atlanta’s lineup coming up.

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:42 pm

we HAVE to score here, absolutely HAVE to score

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Let’s do this Bel-TRAAAHHN (for Miller)

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:42 pm

And a bomb from Delgado here would be clutch.

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Or from Beltran, haha.

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:42 pm

why is he bunting?

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 3:42 pm

OH MY GOD WHY IS HE BUNTING????????????

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. You are red hot A$$hole

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 4:01 pm

i have no idea what he was thinking. seriously, please explain your thought process to me, beltran!!!!!!!!!!!!! that was a horrible AB. you never swung at a strike, including that lame bunt attempt. of course, atlanta shows us how to take advantage of 1st and 2nd and no out.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Cmon Btrain.. Just need a hit here…

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:43 pm

don’t freakin bunt. Church is awful at the plate right now!

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:44 pm

we’re not scoring

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:44 pm

horrendous horrendous

garfios September 21, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Another waste opportunity

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Should have went ahead with the bunt. That one run could be big.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:44 pm

all up to church now!!

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Nice job Btrain… .. Wow,..im not going to comment on that at bat..

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:45 pm

make this guy throw strikes….pressure is on him

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Pitching around Church to get to Slappy McWalkerton.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Take this pitch

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I hate Ryan Church

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

only the mets

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Church has been MURDERING the Mets offense for weeks now

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This has lost all over it

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Evans has to start tomorrow. Church is lost

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm

UNWORTHY OF OCTOBER

And there’s the DP you’re gonna rue in about 20 mins when the Braves take this game back

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:48 pm

UNWORTHY OF POSTING ON THE BLOG. UNWORTHY OF BEING A METS FAN.

Hey this acting like a tool is kinda fun. I see why you do it.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Except that I don’t a sh*t what you say, but when the mets lose you sure care.

Advantage me

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:51 pm

toughest guy on the internet

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:52 pm

But see If the Mets win then I am a winner, you are a loser either way.

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Oh Jesus.

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Infante came off the bag at 2nd.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Are you serious Church? Come on.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 3:47 pm

BENCH CHURCH!!!!!! damnit already! you have to be kidding me! 2 innings in a row and we have 2 men on with no outs and can’t do crap? DAMNIT! come on

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:47 pm

how do you have 2 innings in a row with 1st and 2nd NO OUTS and not score?

Is that possible??

cousinrk September 21, 2008 at 3:47 pm

We’ve seen this game many times before. This is scary stuff right now.

garfios September 21, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Why he didn’t hit and run, this Jerry should not have that much faith in Church

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 3:48 pm

i don’t understand why these guys get on base and its station to station

when was the last time there was a double steal? or just a regular steal?

they have to push the envelope

they can’t just sit and wait for something to happen

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 3:48 pm

exactly. why not push the issue a little???

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Cause we had Wright on 2nd. Lord knows he can’t steal a base…..

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm

are you being sarcastic? wright stole 30 last year and has 15 now. he almost never gets thrown out.

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Last regular steal was the day before yesterday, Reyes and Castillo.

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I agree. But I don’t want Delgado running anywhere.

davidbrenner September 21, 2008 at 3:48 pm

I’m now willing to become an Atheist if it means no more Church.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Church is KILLIN US!!! WTF? 2 men on 2 innings in row and we can’t put up a damn run??? I’m getting really, really frustrated again… Gotta calm down… LOL

garfios September 21, 2008 at 3:49 pm

He really have to sit, he is doing more harm with his bat than good with his glove.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:49 pm

We saw this game last weekend, remember?

Small lead, missing all sorts of chances, letting the Braves hang around

How’d that one turn out for us?

SAME AS THIS ONE WILL

garfios September 21, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Norton hitting a hr, I saw that game too

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Need another beer.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Morton is hitting?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:51 pm

just throw strikes! I’d rather see us go down on line drives than walking crappy hitters.

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 3:51 pm

one more 1-2-3 please

garfios September 21, 2008 at 3:52 pm

He is not getting out of this inning

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Wow, this last 3 innings is gonna take 2 hrs

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Oh, boy, I see the road this is going down.

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Don’t worry fellow Met fans our Bullpen is coming in .

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:53 pm

All you scum “yes men” and homers and bunker-mentality defenders……HERE’S THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR THE METS

Tie run at the plate
9 outs needed from the pen

Offense that is asleep……AGAIN

Buh-bye Mets fans……BUH-BYE

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 3:54 pm

You are not a Mets fan

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:55 pm

what the hell are u talking about? Yes men, bunker mentality??

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Get a grip.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 3:55 pm

It must su ck to be you. By the way this is the last post I will waste on you. You are not only a tool but a broken one at that.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Enjoy this inning TR!!

Savor it

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Please take your medication… This is not Iraq or Vietnam…

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Glad to know that this is the end. Not, say, the 7 run lead blown against Philly, or any of the other ten games that were soul-crushing this year.

Mets could bounce back from all those. But this one?

I appreciate the warning.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 3:58 pm

i’ll put that with the rest of your “predictions” negative/angry/furioso….delgado’s done/beltran’s overrated/wright’s garbage/santana’s not a real ace/phils wrap it up by june

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:53 pm

This has BAD INNING written all over it….

Metfreak September 21, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Go BigBlue atleast I have 1 team that knows how to play a full game

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:56 pm

HAHAHAHAHA……where’s all you loudmouthed defenders now?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I thought Brad Lidge’s boyfriend worked on Sundays.

ReyesMets September 21, 2008 at 3:58 pm

you’re late for your gig at the construction site, dude

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Is Furioso your boyfriend’s name?

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:00 pm

you typed the wrong URL. It’s Beerleaguer.com, pal.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Please god, not again…

At least the Giants are winning…

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 3:59 pm

And it’s gonna be all over shortly…..suffer TR86

SUFFER

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 4:00 pm

You are a pathetic loser.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 4:01 pm

uh oh…now he’s gonna type IN ALL CAPS ABOUT YOU

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Well at least he does not pretend to be a Mets fan I guess. You can tell by the “high quality” of his post that he is obviously a Phillies fan.

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Dude, this team is tough enough to watch without the piling on. Ease up.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Coward.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Ignore that retard… he flushed his meds by accident yesterday..

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Nicely done, Rincon.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:02 pm

nice job Ricon. We need more freakin runs, right now!!!!!!!!!!!

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Whew. 6 outs to go.

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:03 pm

ricardo rincon, brian stokes, luis ayala are our most reliable bullpen arms…unreal

to me joe smith is the most reliable against a righty

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 4:04 pm

crazy isn’t it?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Should be Smith in the 8th

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Guys and gals, I going to ask this question, do you really want to see this team in the playoff? They are going to get trash it, the way they had played so far, not hitting in the clutch, the bp is horrible, someone is going to have a heart attack.

khmustache September 21, 2008 at 4:05 pm

yup i do…otherwise what’s the point?

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Umm… yes?

If they lose, so be it. I’ll take my team in the playoffs every chance I get.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm

If you’re a Met fan, YES. Anything is possible, this team has played better, etc. Any last place team would give their left arm to be in the playoffs. Ask the Yankees :)

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Uh, yes…..no matter what happens once there.

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:08 pm

I ALWAYS want to see the Mets ni the playoffs. Anybody who doesn’t is not a fan. Now, go ahead and disagree with that.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Could we please, please tack on a couple of insurance runs? I may have to hit the xanax if we have 2 more innings like that… Seriously….LOL

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Yup – LOL!

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:05 pm

come on Slappy. Home Run!

Aquadealer September 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm

If by homerun you mean get it out of the infield it might be possible

Aquadealer September 21, 2008 at 4:07 pm

But that would require him to actually swing the bat

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:05 pm

i think this bullpen is going to need to hold this one run lead to win, cause the mets bats are done for the day, they called it quits after the 2nd as they almost always do

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Slappy needs to be released after this season!

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm

what the hell is crapillo looking at? what a turd

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:06 pm

i don’t remember the last time a mets second baseman got a hit, it must have been easley the last time he played

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Speaking of Easly.. I’d like to see him in the lineup.. Castillo is absolutely useless..

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:08 pm

castillo has never hit for power or anything like that, but he is striking out way too many times, looks like he is in between, and why Marlon?

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 4:08 pm

why does castillo bring a bat?? he’s clearly just looking for a walk. that’s the second 3-2 strike he’s taken today, even though the first was called a ball earlier in the game.

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:12 pm

I think baseball rules actually require that you have a bat while in the batter’s box. Otherwise, Slappy would only need a coupld of batting gloves to play with.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Good AB by Schneid

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:08 pm

1-2-3 inning with marlon coming up

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:09 pm

nevermind

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:09 pm

And they make Julio looks like Rivera

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Is Endy not alive anymore?

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Tough call with Endy, I am guessing they want Murphy’s bat to come up again and then use Endy in the bottom of the 9th as a defensive sub.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:09 pm

our bench is so weak right now from the left side!

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Crazy… these guys can’t hit a lick…

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Reyes and/or Murphy is due next inning.

Aquadealer September 21, 2008 at 4:12 pm

That was a drive by Marlon

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:11 pm

this isn’t on the bullpen when they lose it, its on the offense

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:13 pm

don’t you mean IF they lose?

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:14 pm

I think he means WHEN they lose

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:14 pm

No not some of these guys. It’s a coping mechanisim to convince themselves the Mets will always lose. That way if they lose it’s ok and if they win they can have a shocking high.

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:17 pm

i hate to say it, but you’re right, although i have some confidence in the bullpen today, don’t ask me why

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:19 pm

TRS, I get the psycho-narcissism, but it gets tiresome having to read all the crap to get to good or funny posts. You had a good idea taking off a month.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:11 pm

How can so many bad relievers shut you down in 1 game?

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:11 pm

There is your rope

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:12 pm

pinch runner for marlon?

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Yes Awful Reyes. That’s all he would be good for.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Lets go Jose….

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Wow, Reyes is all or nothing. Today, and last night: nothing.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:13 pm

screw Reyes!

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:13 pm

don’t want to get on reyes here, but how many popups can u hit in one game with runners on?

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 4:13 pm

another freaking pop up, are you kidding me???

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:14 pm

hold on to your pants, by just freaking chance they do to hold a lead, don’t they?

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Absolutely nothing for Willie Mays Reyes… Guess this is on our bullpen..

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:15 pm

I don’t think it’s possible for Schoenweise to have 2 consecutive good outings, against the rules

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:16 pm

here goes nothing

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:16 pm

We may have to use 10 pitchers tonight..

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Why tempt fate? Go to the righty.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Another Lefty coming up next. I may regret it but I like stiking with him.

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:19 pm

And of course I do. Oh well.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:17 pm

why is show going against a righty?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Cause Manuel knows something convensional wisdom doesn’t

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Manuel you’re an IDIOT. Thanks

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:19 pm

NEXT…..

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:19 pm

here it comes, it shouldn’t be a shock when it happens

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Won’t be for you. You already expect it. Loser’s mentality.

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

told you

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Bet you are happy. You are right.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Here we go….

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

ugh? Why use a lefty against a righty it makes no sense!!!!! Manuel’s gonna get cooked if we lose this game!

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Omar Frigging Infante?

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Sigh……

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

This is a nightmare

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Schon adds gasoline to the fire… Great job…

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

it’s over!

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

here is the game, and I’m laughing

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Good lord…a check swing?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

This will go down and one of the most famous losses of all-time

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

how do you come in during a pennant race and lose 2 out of 3 to one of the worst teams in baseball? just pathetic, signs of last year. here we go again fellas!

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

There goes the lead…

Thanks Scott..

dykstraw September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

this team is a goddamn nightmare to watch

stranded baserunners and blown leads all frigging year long

enough already

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:21 pm

THIS BULLPEN IS GOD AWFUL! THEY SHOULD PUT THEM ON A SEPARATE PLANE GOING HOME AND CRASH IT!!!!!

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Can you believe this S*&t? Of course. It is expected

cousinrk September 21, 2008 at 4:22 pm

I love Jerry but why are you rolling the dice with Show, bring in the righty. Show cannot get a single righthanded hitter out. EVER!!!

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 4:22 pm

You know, this is so typical I can’t even be angry about it anymore.

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:22 pm

He keeps Schon in there… OMG.. SAME OLD METS.. SAME METS AS LAST YR….. I DO HATE THIS TEAM..

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:23 pm

here comes a 2 run homer from frenchy and the game

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Braves bp= 6 inn no runs
Mets bp= 2 runs and counting
They should be ashamed of themselves, the Marlins has a better chance to make the playoff than us.

dominicanboy08 September 21, 2008 at 4:23 pm

if we had a good bullpen. santana would have at least 21 wins, perez and pelfry around 15-16 wins, and even pedro would have a few more wins. This bullpen is a joke, fuk!!!!

therealsince86 September 21, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Not posting anymore today. I am going to go enjoy a baseball game today and the rest of the week. You guys are all losers and bigger chokers than your own team.

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm

That is harsh. Noone could be a bigger choker than these guys. Once could be an accident, but two years in a row is pretty much the definition of choker.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

You know, sometimes you’re as bad as the ones you’re complaining about. I resent being lumped in with those YOU consider losers and chokers.
It’s a blog,, dude. Not everyone is always gonna agree with you.

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:31 pm

if u don’t agree with him, he’ll call u every name in the book. he’s as bad as everybody else.

he should be the blogging police

and i for one am glad he won’t be posting anymore

Two-By-Four September 21, 2008 at 4:33 pm

First of all you should be as big a loser in your life as I am.

Second you’re taking out your frustrations on the people that post here. They are not on the field.

Third even you should see that this game has followed an all too familiar script.

They won their one game at Turner Field yesterday. Hey you can’t go 162-0. But perhaps they will still win this one.

Anyway the Giants won in overtime. :)

cousinrk September 21, 2008 at 4:24 pm

this is an exact replica of last sundays game. Exact

hardwareman September 21, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Why does this Mets team consitently shut down after the third inning?

hardwareman September 21, 2008 at 4:25 pm

on offense?

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:25 pm

mets: runners on 1st and 2nd no outs = no runs
braves: runners on 1st and 2nd no outs = 1 run

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Fire Willie. Just kidding. Willie was horrible.

But this pen would sink anybody, even the sainted Joe Torre.

This bullpen will not make the playoffs. As much as he has done, this is on Minaya. He has done a horrible job on the pen.

sherlockcollector September 21, 2008 at 6:11 pm

I agree completely. I have really tried to be fair with Omar but as far as the pitching goes he has done NOTHING!!!!! The decision to stay with Heilman, Show, et al has proven to be disasterous. This team looked totally exhausted and uninspired today. Castillo is a bum. I’ve been a Met fan since they stated and this is one of the worse teams I’ve seen. Wait and see, Omar will blame everything on Wagner going down, Maine,Tatis & Easley’s injuries – and while they were critical the bullpen Omar put together is what really is losing it for the Mets. Omar must go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gary Busey September 21, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Lillibridge looks about five yearsold.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 4:26 pm

notice the difference between them and us, they steal when they need to and we NEVER do. game over

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm

exactly

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Nope, we never steal. That’s why we’re 3rd in baseball in steals.

Try again.

metsfan42793 September 21, 2008 at 4:29 pm

read the comment. he said the mets dont steal when they have to. the mets steal dont steal when they need one

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:26 pm

mets aren’t making the playoffs,

metsfan42793 September 21, 2008 at 4:26 pm

game over

dykstraw September 21, 2008 at 4:26 pm

i would honestly rather have my playoff ticket money back than watch this heartcrushing team in october

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I mean Franceour is batting like .220 on hte season…

KinersKornerman September 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm

What are the Giants doing? I need a break from this crap.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm

THERE GOES THE GAME AND THE DIVISION!!!!!!!!!!

EV September 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm

This is UNFREAKING BELIEVEABLE, this is replay of last Sundays game.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm

i’d say there is ZERO% chance that the mets make the playoffs. we will be swept by the fish at the end of the season and the fish will be your wildcard winners…count on it.

BillyDeeWilliams September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

i hate this team.

IA062008 September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Thank God its football season. LETS GO GIANTS!!!!!! 3-0!!!!

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I MEAN DID ANYONE EXPECT US TO GO INTO ATLANTA AND WIN A SERIES IN ATLANTA…WE NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL SO IDK WHY EVERYONE IS UPSET ABOUT THIS…AT LEAST WE GOT 1 GAME

smm140 September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

good night. this team is enough to drive you to drink. so incredibly pathetic. they just waited around to have a team 20 games under to come back and beat ‘em. good job fellas.

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I ask again, do you want to see this team in oct.?

sandiegometsman September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I’m outtahere… I can’t take this team anymore… call me what u want… This team is killin me… :( Have great day fellas… This is A REPEAT OF LAST SUNDAYS’ GAME..

LeftCoastMetsFan September 21, 2008 at 4:36 pm

frontrunner

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:28 pm

weren’t the mess down yesterday 4-2 and did nothing? but the braves are down 4-2 and come back to win

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:29 pm

this was obvious, from the 2nd inning on. The Mets can’t do crap after the first few innings! Yeah we have 3 100 RBI guys but prob 60 of them were from the 1st three innings

LIMetfan74 September 21, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Way to go out and play!
This team is pathetic!!!!

LIMetfan74 September 21, 2008 at 4:29 pm

BYE BYE Division!

911nafstem September 21, 2008 at 4:29 pm

LET’S GO GIANTS!!!!! ELI IS THE MAN!!!!!!

Stems September 21, 2008 at 4:30 pm

buncha F’ing pusssies i swear…

can the mets grow a F’ing pair of balls down the stretch???

they sure like getting slapped around by the crappy teams dont they?

hardwareman September 21, 2008 at 4:30 pm

These Braves a a group of kids that we make look like Hall of Famers!
Jeff Francour!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is he hitting in this series?
He’s .238 on the season and we can’t get him out?

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 4:30 pm

This is f**king unbelievable.

Our offense shuts down after the 2nd inning, and a good effort by Pelfrey is wasted by this p.o.s. bullpen…

The season isn’t over, but for god’s sakes. YOU CAN’T KEEP GIVING GAMES AWAY TO BAD TEAMS!!!

At least the Giants won…

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Why do you think it’s unbelievable? It has been going on for a year now. This team cannot win a close game. They are awful down the stretch of a game or a season. These guys are major chokers, and I hate to say that because I love Wright and Reyes. They just don’t bring it when it counts. It’s like having a team of A Rods.

EV September 21, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Yea I did Air, I really did.

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 21, 2008 at 4:31 pm

shocking

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:32 pm

This is not shocking, it happens almost two or three times a week

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 21, 2008 at 4:34 pm

sorry. left off the

/sarcasm

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:31 pm

even jerry is making some poo, he has Smith ready, why let schow pitch to the righty

jimyager September 21, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Watching these games after the starter leave is worse that watching ARMANDO BENETIZ in the 9th. I CANT TAKE IT !!! We blow another late game. OMG !!!

LIMetfan74 September 21, 2008 at 4:32 pm

I dont care that the Cubs clinched we cant beat the Braves how the hell can we beat the cubs!!!

EV September 21, 2008 at 4:33 pm

THANK GOD FOR THE GIANTS!!!!

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Word

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:33 pm

they need to clean this bullpen up big time in the off season. A new clean house. No Heilman, now show, no feliciano. Smith is still young so he might develop. Parnell needs a bigger role, bring back Kunz. Sign K-Rod. I don’t care I don’t want to see these guys next year or im not gonna watch this crappy team!

Darth Manuel September 21, 2008 at 4:33 pm

This team doesn’t get it.. It really doesn’t wasted opportunities… Manuel is blowing it..

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:33 pm

I’d say this is absolutely unbelievable, but I’ve seen this script before.

What are the odds we get out of this inning with no more runs scored and actually score in the 9th? I’d say very, very, very low. But anything is possible, I guess….

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:33 pm

This will teach some of you pieces of garbage (right TS86?!) to dare to defend these fu*king chokers.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Oh stfu, you f–kin loser,

Rooting for our team doesn’t make people “garbage”

Being an a-hole and treating everyone like sh-t does…

Now f–k off you moron

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:38 pm

You forgot to take your medication. I think several reminded you earlier.

Nate W. September 21, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Mets relievers have had 5 appearances in the last 10 games in which they have failed to retire a batter.

Schoeneweis, Ayala, Heilman, Figueroa, and now Smith.

the_other_matt September 21, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Sounds like a WS winning team to me.

Eggman September 21, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Is there any chance at all they don’t go down meekly in the 9th? Zero point Zero.

the_other_matt September 21, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Mr. Blu – MR. BLUTARSKY… ZERO POINT ZERO.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:35 pm

This is a good matchup. The worst pitcher in the league v.s. the best hitter in the league.

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Its frustrating that the brewers have been losing tons of game as of late and we cant put the wild card away like could have easily done by now…Now the Brewers win and you know they are gonna get hot and string together a few games in a row..and we have a rookie on the mound tomorrow and Heilman on right now

SantanaCYYOung September 21, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Mets aren’t winning the division, no way no how. The phillies play the braves who lay over for them and the mets have the cubs and the marlins. they’d be luck to win 3 more games all year

EV September 21, 2008 at 4:35 pm

This game is the story of the Mets season: offense scores early and takes the rest of the days off, the Braves chip away at the lead and the bullpen blows it as usual.

D-Day September 21, 2008 at 4:36 pm

this is ridiculous! worst bullpen in the HISTORY of the game! i dont want to see any of these worthless a-holes back next season. i dont care if we bring up every pitching prospect we have to pitch in the bullpen, all these guys need to GET LOST!

Stems September 21, 2008 at 4:37 pm

it is unbeleivable that a bullpen is so bad

unbeleivable…

even a college bullpen can hold a 2 run lead a few times a month…

the mets, thats way too much to ask apparently.

cousinrk September 21, 2008 at 4:37 pm

We knew this, the only way this team can win is to score 6-10 runs a game. Reyes and Murphy the last two days 0-17. No chance like that.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:38 pm

They sure have played like warriors on this trip

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 4:38 pm

LOL

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

PACK IT IN BOYS

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

And I don’t even think there’s anything left to say…..

cousinrk September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

this team leads the league in 0-2 or 1-2 fat pitches.

the_other_matt September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

At least Heilman is consistent

Nate W. September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

why would you call a fastball away to Prado? He’s been going the other way all game long. Terrible call Schneider!!

EV September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Wow Heilman freaking blew it SHOCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:41 pm

don’t you mean ‘fuc*’ing’ shocker??? Lol!

EV September 21, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Yea I did mean that lol.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Dear Heilman:

Please take the Donnie Moore option.

Tonight.

Let your 2008 stats suffice for a note

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Shut your sad and pathetic mouth.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Still haven’t taken your meds?

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Look at the bench, they even look like losers

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

4-6 against Nats and Braves

washtiger September 21, 2008 at 4:43 pm

Actually, 6-6 counting today’s loss. Not good enough, i’m afraid, against the dregs of the NL East. Needed to go 9-3 here. Oh well.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

was there ever any doubt? seriously?

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

absolute meltdown, they don’t only blow the lead they blow every chance of a comeback!!!!

Stems September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

PLEASE JUST FU*KING LOSE NOW AND SPARE US OCTOBER!!!!

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

i hope Heilman takes a line drive off the face

washtiger September 21, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Same sh@t, different day. We score early, the bats fall asleep. Wasted opportunity after opportunity — to the tune of 9 LOB today. Take a slim lead into the late innings and the BP can’t hold it.

We have trouble against the crap teams in the league, and guess what, the Padres swept the Nats this weekend with little difficulty.

Nice job Aaron — pour some more gasoline on that fire!

mrose September 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm

seriously…
can this bullpen EVER save a lead? and forget it, if anyone thinks them mets have a chance of coming back in this one, the bats laid down after the 2nd…
ugh
come ON!

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Typical Heilman. Tack more on so we can’t even come back.

Way to give these stupid Georgians something to cheer about on the last day of their stupid season

mrose September 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm

ummm they have 6 left…just sayin

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:41 pm

last home game for the fat southern idiots atthe game

LIMetfan74 September 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm

STOP USING HILEMAN!!!
I WANT HIM OFF THIS TEAM!

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm

please can some serial killer just kill heliman!

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:43 pm

Stop. Little over the top, dude.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm

The silver lining here is that certain Mets fans at least suffer…

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Yeah, that’s the silver lining, that other supporters of a team you also claim to support suffer.

You need to re-examine your priorities, pal. You’re a real piece of work.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm

And here comes Heilman, blowing any chance of a comeback…

Watching this team is masochistical…..

Nate W. September 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm

…what a way to inspire the Phillies who’s game just started.

At least a Phillies win helps the Mets secure the WC.

The division race is just about over today if the Phils win.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 4:41 pm

this is just indicative of our season and you can expect much of the same down the stretch this week. if i were any of you, i wouldn’t get your hopes up for some playoff baseball in NY. if you do, you are just setting yourself up for major disappointment.

JoseReyesForPresident September 21, 2008 at 4:41 pm

NOTHING NEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we knew this was going to happen didnt we?
and if we do make it to the post season we wont make it far with this bullpen thats for sure

fongulalou September 21, 2008 at 4:42 pm

We won’t make the post season at this rate!

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 4:42 pm

And let’s save some of the vitriol for the mediocre Feliciano, and soso Smith, and the absolutely abominable Schoeneweis, whose contract was MUCH worse than Slappy’s.

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 4:42 pm

that ball was smoked

Darth Manuel September 21, 2008 at 4:42 pm

weakness…

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:42 pm

CHOKERS

Believe me, they’re gonna even blow the WC

The division is a foregone conclusion

CHOKERS

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 4:44 pm

You are a sad and pathetic excuse for a person Furioso.

Do us a favor and take the Donnie Moore option yourself as you disgustingly posted above.

Put us–and yourself–out of your obnoxious misery.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Yea, only my comment you single ut, plenty of similar venom for Heilman on here you don’t take to task

Hypocrite

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 4:48 pm

You suggested he kill himself, you sad moron.

I can only imagine what a quiet, tiny, little fella you are when you cannot hide behind the internet.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 5:01 pm

I was thinking the same thing. I’d love to meet this guy in person, see how “Furioso” he is then.

F’ing loser.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:44 pm

I take it Beerleaguer won’t let you play in their sandbox – LOL.
And you still haven’t taken your meds.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Enjoying this game I hope?

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Yeah, as a matter of fact.
Don’t presume you have a clue about any of us Met fans. At 15, you gotta a lot of living to do kid, before you get the first clue about life, let alone being a fan.

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:43 pm

Is not Heilman along, the ones before are to blame too, and the offense too, but you just can’t score 10 runs every game, and now 1-2-3 in the 9th against a 4.40 era pitcher

Nate W. September 21, 2008 at 4:46 pm

true, if anyone else before his does his job they can avoid Heilman altogether like they wanted to.

But this would have been a good spot to use Ayala, imo. Ayala hasnt pitched for 4 days now.

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 4:43 pm

Day after the season, just give him his outright release. I never want to see Heilman in a Met uniform again. Doug Sisk is a tougher customer on the mound.

D-Day September 21, 2008 at 4:43 pm

anyone know if armando benitez is available?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:43 pm

My first comment of the day was: As Reyes goes, this team goes. I stand by my statement.

Look, we know the bullpen can’t do their job. We have to score 8-9 runs to have a chance.

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 4:46 pm

At this point, I figure any game in which they only have a 1 run lead going into the last 3 innings with the starter out is a loss.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Cohen is right…..roll w/ Parnell.

He cannot be any worse.

garfios September 21, 2008 at 4:45 pm

I said about an month ago, that the team with the better offense down the stretch will win the div. so far the Phillies are doing a better job,

Hit The Weights Zeile September 21, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Well we will be lucky to make the playoffs, if we do itll be because the brewers just played worse than us and even then we will get destroyed by the cubs in the first round.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Reyes/Murph/Church no hits in 2 games. Can’t win that way

Two-By-Four September 21, 2008 at 4:45 pm

The bullpen is the Achilles heel of this ballclub. They have been able to overcome injuries and deficiencies in other parts of the club but all that is weighted down by the shear incompetence of the bullpen. We have to remember that this is a bad Atlanta team that is feasting on the Mets bullpen.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Thanks Einstein.

And what is “shear” incompetence? Are they bad at giving haircuts as well as pitching?

Two-By-Four September 21, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Would you trust them holding a razor? Yes, you probably would.

Sorry for the spelling error but if you don’t understand what I mean then you’re not watching this team. Perhaps you are but your head can’t see the screen from its present location.

BTW you certainly have Dave Kingman’s disposition. Say hello to Tinker Bell for me.

One can’t even make a simple, but obvious comment about this team without some delusional self pro-claimed optimist attacking the poster personally. Get a life.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 5:18 pm

Well, sorry sir.

I guess that I just thought that since your post contains only ideas that any 6 year old would have realized about a month or two ago, I thought the post was a bit silly.

I am an optimist with a life, but I am not delusional. Thinking your post said anything new or remotely interesting is delusional.

And have a nice day!

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:47 pm

yeah, but the offense s**ks a$$ also

This loss is just as much on the hitting

Yesterday also

Oh, and f**k Pedro

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 4:50 pm

It is all on the bullpen. It puts so much pressure on every other aspect of the team. Starters know they have to go deep and must economize pitches. Hitters know they have to put up a big number every night. It’s just impossible. The Phils only scored 3 runs last night but they were able to ride their bullpen to the end.

THANK YOU AARON HEILMAN!!!!!

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Gary ‘If the Mets don’t rally’……hahahaha – funny guy.

LeftCoastMetsFan September 21, 2008 at 4:50 pm

theres a start

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:46 pm

This team is defeated, not even going down swinging.

Lets_Go_Mets September 21, 2008 at 4:47 pm

1-8. Another fine season for the Mets down in Hotlanta.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Gonzales just looks like a fool on that mound. I don’t care how good he throws.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:47 pm

These fans behind the plate yellin are really annoying. Don’t they have a Nascar event to get to?

MealTicket September 21, 2008 at 4:48 pm

There is an excellent chance this team will not win another game, at least not until they’ve squandered their wild-card lead. (Once the games don’t count, they’ll be unbeatable. You watch). I put the odds of the Mets winning NOT ONE more “meaningful” victory at better than 50-50.

The psychological advantage you hand a team by letting them know that a deficit of three or four or five runs will be easy to surmount once the relief corps comes on is absolutely decisive. It keeps the other team focused and upbeat. Met relievers either throw batting practice or they can’t find the plate. There is no middle ground. Extraordinary.

As far as the hitters are concerned, they’re a talented bunch, to be sure. But they are NOT smart players. Beltran’s mental blunder is repeated almost every day by one or another of these Sunday sluggers.

Call it heart, smarts, toughness, will to win–the Mets don’t have it.

It’s over, folks. It really is.

Gland September 21, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Whatever.

washtiger September 21, 2008 at 4:48 pm

Some of the comments about Heilman are a bit too much. That said, why does Manuel keep running him out there? I just don’t get it. Now is not the time to let him work through whatever is wrong with him. That two-run double is the nail in the coffin today!

Nice job, BTW — the Mets will finish the year 1-8 at ATL.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Okay….

D-Day September 21, 2008 at 4:48 pm

take everone in the bullpen, strap them to shea stadium after the season. and TAKE THE WRECKING BALL TO ALL OF THEM!!!!!!

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Wow. sure is some mental toughness they’re showing the last week +

Lose 2/3 to ATL at home
Split 4 to NAT on road
Lose 2/3 to Braves on road

Garbage choker teams

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Nate W. September 21, 2008 at 4:56 pm

In the past two weeks Gonzalez is 4 for 4 in saves against the Mets ans 0 for 2 against everyone else including one to the Phillies.

Twice the Mets allowed a one run Braves lead to turn into a three run lead getting Gonzalez a comfy lead to nail down.

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 4:56 pm

NEVER USE AARON HEILMAN IN A BASEBALL GAME EVER AGAIN!!!!

Dafatone80 September 21, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Damn.

All we have to do is win most of our remaining games.

This team has bounced back from tough losses all year.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:58 pm

I had to walk out to the mound a lot. These games are always interesting, huh? Chuckle, Chuckle, I love making best friends with the media so they don’t kill me.

cousinrk September 21, 2008 at 4:57 pm

How about these Atlanta clowns show up the next three days in Philly now. Show some equality. I’m going to take a walk and cool off before I break something

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 4:59 pm

I’m with you. Feel like drivin a car into a brick wall like in those commercials.

dancran September 21, 2008 at 5:02 pm

In case you haven’t noticed, the only reason the Braves keep beating us is because our pen gives it up every time. Phillies pen is way better than ours. Sooner we all figure that out the better.

BigPelf4prez September 21, 2008 at 4:57 pm

MIKE GONZALEZ MUST TO TO HE**!

Darth Manuel September 21, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Bobby Valentine clap clap clap clap clap

dancran September 21, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Seriously, what the hell is this team supposed to do? I have never ever seen a bullpen that consistently gives up the lead so quickly like this pen. It makes no difference who we put in. That person is guaranteed to give the lead up. That is THREE blown games within the last week, all to the Braves, when leading in the 8th inning or later.

Yes, I completely agree 100% that this team has real issues with clutch hitting too. They have to tack on.

BUT, that doesn’t excuse this from happening every single game.

I am so annoyed. I don’t even know what to say anymore. what do we honestly expect for us to do in the playoffs anyway? jesus.

TobeRinkler September 21, 2008 at 4:59 pm

The heck with all you gloom n doomers…you’re depressing me. The race is tight & staying that way, & that’s how it should be.

Let’s Go Mets!

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:59 pm

HEILMAN DOES NOT DESERVE TO MAKE ANYMORE THAN MINIMUM WAGE. HE PROB FAILED IN SCHOOL SOMEHOW PITCHED HIS WAY INTO THE MLB, AND EVER SINCE HAS BEEN WORSE THAN A 12 YEAR OLD!!!!!

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 4:59 pm

If you don’t believe it is all the bullpen, what have you been watching this season. Put it this way, the Phillies haven’t blown one game all year where they had the lead going to the ninth. The Mets have blown at least 11.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 5:01 pm

wow – is that all, 11? Feels like many more.

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 5:03 pm

I’m not counting the ones blown in the 7th or 8th. If you counted those, the total would probably run to about 20+.

LIMetfan74 September 21, 2008 at 5:05 pm

11 in the 9th inning

But now 28!!!!! 28!!! Blown saves!!!

washtiger September 21, 2008 at 5:03 pm

That’s the rub. Aren’t the Phillies overdue to blow at least one? Hopefully it will happen in the postseason when the “rea” Lidge shows up!

washtiger September 21, 2008 at 5:04 pm

*that should be “real”

D-Day September 21, 2008 at 5:00 pm

f the bullpen, omar hope your proud, you have offically put together the WORST BULLPEN IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL!!!!. the only thing consistent about the team is the bullpen giving up runs!

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Omar doesn’t care. Him and his latino over 40 club will be smokin Cubans in Vieques this winter, counting their money. Don’t you get it?

FlightFromHouston September 21, 2008 at 5:13 pm

he’s put together the worst pen 2 YEARS IN A ROW !!! that is incredible ineptitude … rivaling Bush.

domosnacks5 September 21, 2008 at 5:02 pm

… and I’m sure glad I didn’t post during this game. Some of you guys are legitimately insane.

Furioso- go buzz off you troll.

Everyone else, we have a 1.5 game lead, we can make it a 2 game lead with 6 to play with a win tomorrow. I’m not concerned, 7 straight at home bodes very well for us, we’ve played way better this season at home. Cubs have clinched, we’re going to miss Harden and Big Z. We’ll be fine. Worst case scenario- if we go 4-3, the Brewers will need to go 5-1 to just tie us. We’ll be okay, I have faith.

LET’S GO METS

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 5:02 pm

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 5:05 pm

Give me the names of these great relievers that Omar could’ve acquired without giving away his farm system.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 5:09 pm

he can get free agents like K-Rod!

FlightFromHouston September 21, 2008 at 5:11 pm

you fool… one of the jobs of a GM is to create/spot opportunities and capitalize on them… opportunities exist for those crafty enought to find and react … it’s not the job of fans to do his scouting for him. .. do you want us to list all the quality relievers out there?

Omar is a GM, he has to make it happen. That’s his job … I REFUSE TO BELIVE THAT THERE WAS JUST SIMPLY NO POSSIBLE OR SMART OR FEASABLE WAY FOR OMAR TO GIVE US A RESPECTABLE BULLPEN

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 5:23 pm

And knowing that the Mets had problems in their bullpen, don’t you think every other GM looked to take advantage of the Mets? It works both ways.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 6:18 pm

No point in arguing. He has refused to believe.

Oh, wait, uppercase for emphasis: He has REFUSED TO BELIEVE.

Omar must go. Case closed.

rowjamie September 21, 2008 at 5:49 pm

how about LaTroy Hawkins, Eddie Guardado and Scott Eyre just to name a few off the top of my head.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 6:22 pm

I haven’t heard any news of these guys breaking any records with their stunning relief work. Yeah, they’re different, but are they any better?

Look, I’m not saying we don’t have problems with our pen. I’m just saying a lot of teams have problems with their pens, and unless you can produce the name of a “sure thing” that Omar missed, you have no right to be calling for his head.

rowjamie September 21, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Since acquired by Houston on August 2, Hawkins has a line of :

16 IP, 7 hits, 2 BB, 2 ER, 22 K’s so his ERA is 1.125 WHIP is 0.56 K/BB Ratio is 11:1

Since Omar failed to block the waivers claim and allowed the Phils to get Eyre, his numbers are:

11.1 IP, 6 hits, 3 BB, 2 ER, 14 K’s
ERA is 1.59 WHIP is 0.79 K:BB Ratio is 4.67:1

Guardado hasn’t been as good, but like I said, I was just picking names off the top of my head.

better than what we have? I’d say so.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Look at their previous records: Hawkins with the Yanks (or the Rockies last year); Eyre with Chicago. Their numbers ranged from average to godawful. So Omar is a bad GM because he does not have a crystal ball capable of predicting future success for historically mediocre players?

Also, 11 — or 16 — innings pitched is a pretty small sample size. You want to look at the first 11 innings pitched by Brian Stokes? He looked pretty great.

rowjamie September 22, 2008 at 8:19 am

but isn’t that why a GM is paid the big bucks? to find those guys.

Phillies GM saw something in Eyre. Now they’re ahead of us. Again. At a minimum, Omar should have blocked ANY move the Phillies wanted to make.

EV September 21, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Playoffs, how far can you go in the playoffs with a bullpen like this?

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 5:20 pm

This team has been on shaky ground since Wagner went down. Do you think the Phillies would’ve survived if Lidge had gone down for the season and all of a sudden were looking at Ryan Madson as their closer?

The Slider September 21, 2008 at 5:08 pm

This is a game where Jerry should have used Ayala in the 8th inning to stop floodgates.

Ceetar September 21, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Sure, I mean, he almost managed to use every reliever in the pen in that inning. I hear he sent Alomar over to McDowell tosee if they could borrow other relievers to bring in.

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 5:08 pm

The Braves will go down meekly to Phila. Just sayin. These teams hate the Mets and show up against them. Mets are through. Take a look at Milwaukee’s schedule. Mets will be lucky to win 2 of 6.

EV September 21, 2008 at 5:10 pm

The sad part is if we had ONE GUY in the pen that could get outs, we would have the division locked up. I want NO PART of the Cubs in the first round.

D-Day September 21, 2008 at 5:12 pm

i think rollins is slipping these bullpen guys some cash under the table to blow these games, i mean, NO bullpen can honestly be THIS bad, right?

FlightFromHouston September 21, 2008 at 5:12 pm

why doesn’t matt cerrone post an Omar Minaya approval rating poll?????? why does he NOT do it????

MeesesGlokmah September 21, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Because we already know what the result would be. No approval.

NYP-BOS-NYP September 21, 2008 at 9:26 pm

No, it’s because he’s already asked that question. It’s the “overall direction” poll that he takes regularly. Whom do you think is in charge of the Mets’ overall direction, hmm??

dwright57 September 21, 2008 at 5:12 pm

dude we arent going to the playoffs

we will split with the cubs if lucky

FlightFromHouston September 21, 2008 at 5:15 pm

if we get to the playoffs… we’ll be humiliated … so what’s the point? We really do have a good team that Omar has wasted by sticking it with the worst bullpen known to man… for two years running

wa2k99 September 21, 2008 at 5:15 pm

We are done.

If we even get in, we will not get past Game 4 against Chicago. The Giants won, the US won the Ryder Cup, the Pats got killed, and yet, I could not be more piZZed off.

D-Day September 21, 2008 at 5:18 pm

seriously, i keep trying to think of all that good stuff you mentioned but it hasnt helped this disgusting feeling i have. this bullpen honestly makes me physically SICK!

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 5:16 pm

Is anyone really surprised? This pen has been horrible since last September, and, really since the playoffs against the Cards. Nobody has done anything about it (Omar). We better see 7 new bodies out there next year.

EV September 21, 2008 at 5:17 pm

11 blown saves in the ninth, give me 6 of those back and where are we? If your pen can’t hold it against the braves how are you suppossed to beat the dodges or cubs in the playoffs?

D-Day September 21, 2008 at 5:22 pm

did you guys see the body language from the guys in the field while sho, smith,. and hielman were getting knocked around. HORRIBLE! there as much in disbelief and fed up as wer are i bet!

wa2k99 September 21, 2008 at 5:23 pm

I live in Chicago, I would rather miss the playoffs than lose to those scumbags in the playoffs. I am not kidding.

I do not want the wild card. If they win that, the Mets franchise will talk about how they made the playoffs and use that to justify that their team is good enough.

EV September 21, 2008 at 5:26 pm

This falls on OMAR no one else!!!!!

Andrew September 21, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Just unforgivable. Unforgivable.

Wilpon had better open up the checkbook for relievers and a left fielder next year.

imtiredofguiseppefranco September 21, 2008 at 5:31 pm

manny is coming

BLUEXORANGE September 21, 2008 at 5:33 pm

okay, is there really anything more people can say at this point. our bullpen is bad,its horrible, its disgusting, you cant even decide on a word to describe it. but what are we as fans going to do anymore. we have to vs a team that even with there bench playing will probably beat us. while the phils and brewers vs teams we couldn’t beat. people say, oh were done the seasons over right now…or hey by golly guys lets all just calm down ya gotta believe!!.yea bull….but the season really isn’t over yet. so lets just stop with the see-saw opinions and stop yelling at this mets team who are prob going to win everyone back in a couple days . or hey maybe not….but lets just watch the remaining games and see what happens. winning the wild card will mean nothing to me unless we get revenge on the phillies in the playoffs…the though i seeing the phillies celebrate once again makes me want to puke. but enough with all this just think where we would be if the bullpen was just decent. who cares were here in a race and we have to look forward from now….if we don’t make the playoffs then……go jets or giants!!! its just baseball and theres always next year and maybe howard will get traded and mets will actually have a bullpen that can win against a high school team……..but its not over yet as much as everyone thinks it is but its your opinion you can stay on this site arguing something that probably wont even matter in a few months instead you will be watching football….yea see ya guys and like cerrone says …..as always….ya gotta F-ing believe

Two-By-Four September 21, 2008 at 5:37 pm

By nature I’m neither a pessimist nor an optimist. I try to be even–keeled. For the most part I don’t ask for people to be fired or released from the team and I am appreciative of the talent on this ball club. Also, I will admit when I’m wrong. But I find it difficult to say anything positive about this bullpen except for the occasional well they didn’t screw up today. I can’t get mad at these guys. I know they are trying. But when it’s the bullpen’s turn to enter a game you sometimes have to laugh to keep from crying.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:41 pm

they are trying? i’d love to TRY to get guys out and get paid 3 million to do so. Schoenweiss and heilman have NO BUSINESS ever being in a game, and Jerry can’t seem to figure this out yet. We will miss the playoffs b/c of a 4-6 sept record versus the braves and nats. sound familiar?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Once again, our record with Castillo is sub .500. And guess what, Jerry doesn’t deserve to be re-hired. Why? B/c YOU DONT LET SHOW OR HEILMAN PITCH EVER! Why does he continue to go to them. The Castillo curse continues, and his presence leads to an apathetic, .500 team. I hope he would just get run over on his waay to the next game or something.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:39 pm

no we are 1.5 up agains the brewers, who btw have the pirates at home and then the cubs. we have the cubs and a pain in the a$s marlins team. we will NOT make the playoffs. yes the bullpen blew it, but our team looks lifeless with castillo around, he is the cancer, the jinx, and the only starter to sport a losing record when he plays.

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 5:43 pm

You really can’t argue. Take a look at what has happenned to this team since Castillo got here last August. Totally tanked. The best stretch came during his injuries. I’m not sayin, just sayin.

Ceetar September 21, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Ofcourse. I mean, Castillo’s probably kicking babies in the clubhouse and pissing everyone off so they don’t want to play well.

You can make up any excuses you want to why the team struggles when it does, but that doesn’t mean it’s true.

I’d bet any amount of money that the Mets make the playoffs. They’re the best team in the league that hasn’t clinched a spot.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:48 pm

no they aren’t……they are a mediocre team in this configuration. under .500 in fact, with luis castillo. when he is not there, this team is the best in the national league. look at the records and stop giving the guy head.

metsjam September 21, 2008 at 6:22 pm

I agree with you, but at this point my advice is to give it up. For the sake of your mental health. I think everybody here has already made up their minds about the relative pros and CONS of playing Castillo.

metsjam September 21, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Unless you have unlimited resources I’d hold on to some of your money. I mean, the Mets were the best team last year not to make the playoffs. And better than some of the teams who made it. I’m not yet having Deja vu, but I’m having at least Deja.

imtiredofguiseppefranco September 21, 2008 at 5:39 pm

relax guys its 1 game, i know the bullpen is bad, but the brewers are not going to keep up with this team, the brewers bullpen is far worse

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 5:40 pm

No they’re not. At best, it’s an even fight, but this pen is horrible.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:42 pm

the brewers will probably end up not losing any of their remaining games, while we will lose just enough to miss the playoffs by one game. this team was on FIRE before castillo came back, and now we look like the same mediocre llate 2007-early 2008 team that featured him.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 5:44 pm

You really, really need to understand that we lost today because of the bullpen.

Castillo had absolutely nothing more to do with the loss than any other non-bullpen pitcher.

You might as well blame the loss on unicorns and five leaf clovers and the frigin Loch Ness monster.

It make NO sense.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:46 pm

proof of why individual stats DON’T indicate winning baseball:

Tampa Bay Rays Offensive Leaders have a
.276 batting average (yikes!!!)
31 HR
96 RBI
.382 OBP

NY Yankees leaders:
.310 batting average
35 HR
101 RBI
.392 OBP

The Yankees have SIX players who have better BA than the BEST BA player on the rays. SIX!
The Yankees have a better OBP as a team.
The Yankees have a better SLG % as a team.

So from now on, when someone says “castillo is just better b/c of his slugging, OBP, and BA numbers say so” then remind then that this same principle applies to the fact that the Yankees won the AL East and the Rays will miss the playoffs….OH WAIT, it’s about more than stats! It’s chemistry!

The team plays better when Castillo is away. Period.

Church September 21, 2008 at 5:53 pm

well now, that is interesting.

kingman 26 September 21, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Wow, what an utterly irrelevant and meaningless bunch of nonsense.

Castillo’s play had zero to do with the loss today.

I give up with fools like you, I love the Mets, I hope they win tomorrow.

metsforever September 21, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Really, each starter has to be informed before the game that he is expected to, and will go 9. Under no circumstances should anybody in this BP be allowed to pitch in any game that could be considered in doubt, which pretty much is any game.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:45 pm

we have won ONE series since we swept the brewers. a 2 game series versus the NATS……ONE SERIES…….

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Mets 2009

1. Reyes
2. Murphy
3. Manny
4. Delgado
5. Wright
6. Beltran
7. Church
8. Schneider/ Castro

Bullpen
K-Rod
Feliciano
Smith
Parnell
Kunz
Stokes
Ayala

no Heilman or Show they have screwed up way too much

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:50 pm

i prefer orlando hudson, and keep murph in the outfield with tatis….

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 6:03 pm

you mean Church?

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 6:05 pm

and yeah im game for signing the O-Dawg, but I think we need a big bat like manny in there. O Dawgs another light hitter decent gap to gap power but doesn’t hit enough home runs

metsjam September 21, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Am I overreacting? I don’t want Hudson. I want every single, stinking penny the Mets spend on improvement spent on the bullpen. A complete and total overhaul. I don’t care if we’re forced to play Easley and Reyes and , so help me God, Castillo next year. I don’t want a power hitting outfielder. I don’t want another starting pitcher. I want a group of people who can be given a two run lead against a crappy team like the Braves and have a better than a one in three chance of holding it.

steve333 September 21, 2008 at 6:39 pm

1. Reyes
2. Murphy
3. Carp or Texiera
4. Wright
5. Beltran
6. Church
7. Hudson
8. Schneider

Bullpen-
complete overhaul

MealTicket September 21, 2008 at 5:48 pm

OK, all you Pollyannas. I’m ready.

Let’s hear how it’s “only one game.”

Let’s hear how there is no such thing as mental toughness (a.k.a. “heart”) in baseball.

Let’s hear how “this year is not last year.”

Let’s hear how everyone played “really well.”

Let’s hear how encouraging Pelfrey’s start was.

Let’s hear how great the Mets are at rebounding after a tough loss.

Let’s hear how “no team’s bullpen is perfect.” (A personal favorite of mine).

Let’s hear how the Mets would have won today, but for one random bit of “bad luck” that could’ve happened to anyone.

But what I really want to hear–what would really make my day special–is that we’re still leading the Wild Card, and that everyone should “Just relax.”

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 5:56 pm

All I can say to that tirade – wow…….
Life must be cold and lonely on that ledge you live on.

mettieboys September 21, 2008 at 5:52 pm

this team is disgusting. i dont even want to watch but something keeps bringin me back. even if we get wildcard this bullpen will get us nowhere past the ds. and everytime i see gonzalez’s gay dance before he throws i want to break the tv

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 5:53 pm

What is mind boggling to me and I’m sure most fans on here is……………………………how in god’s name do you even bring in Heilman in a MUST WIN game in the middle of a pennant race?

Unless Jerry and the Mets are secretly and intentionally trying to blow the season, there is no possible explanation for letting this guy come near a mound.

You just CAN”T take a chance with this guy, not now. Not when everything is riding on making the playoffs.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:55 pm

same for schoenweiss. why is bobby parnell not in there, after the game he had last night? why is Schoe, who blew the gaame last Sat, facing this Braves team?

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 5:59 pm

I’m starting to wonder if there is something about Heilman us average fans just don’t know. Because I sure as hell have no idea why Jerry keeps putting him out there….

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 6:03 pm

I can’t possibly think of anythinf why Jerry would keep going to him. I think Jerry is hoping beyond all hope that Heilman will get it together and be that set-man Jerry so desperately needs for the playoffs (if they even make it).

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 6:10 pm

If that really is what Jerry is doing, here’s what’s wrong with that flawed logic – you actually Hhave to get to the post season before you decide if Heilman can be the set up guy. And it’s obvious we won’t get there, if he keeps bringing him out there to blow these leads. It’s like Willie and Mota…

I think I was the last on the ‘Heilman good ship lollipop’ but even I’ve jumped off. He just cannot get it done.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Yep, you are correct sir. Heilman should not be allowed to pitch for the rest of the season or in the playoffs. I like how Manuel came out a few days ago and threw in an excuse for Heilman how he’s been hurt since spring training. If he is not 100%, he should be off the team, not on the mound blowing crucial games down the stretch drive. It’s really reached the point of total denial. We have plenty of arms in the BP, why do they keep going to the same pitchers who have clearly proven they just can’t get the job done? What’s that old definition of insanity? Oh, yeah, “Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” It’s really laughable.

Not when everything is riding on making the playoffs.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 5:53 pm

The NYM were the best team in the national league from July 4th until september. This period coincided with Luis Castillo’s lengthy DL trip. Jose Reyes was incredible during this stretch. He has since b/c the boneheaded player of early ‘08, late ‘07, the same period in which castillo was around. Of all the Mets players, the only one (aside from pitchers) who has a losing record when he plays is Luis Castillo. I know argenis reyes stinks. He is terrible actually. But the team is MUCH better with him playing and with castillo dead to the Mets. It’s proven in the record, and in how well Jose Reyes plays.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 6:00 pm

I know metsmad22. But as soon as you mention that the Castillo apologists come out of the woodwork and bombard you with OBP stats about why Castillo is “Good” for the team. I’m with you, the guy is as close to a human cancer on this team as anyone player can be. Hey, easley can not come back soon enough. It might be too late though.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 6:02 pm

it is too late…..i was on the FAN the day he came back saying “well here is where the mets will turn back to the old win 1 lose 2 team” and of course was told I was wrong b/c with Johan and Carlos Delgado how could we lose?!

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Argenis Reyes is TERRIBLE. He does NOTHING to spark the team. He is USELESS.

I’m not a Castillo “apologist”, but for f–ks sake, there is no logical or sane reason to start Awful Reyes and watch him go 0-5…

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 6:47 pm

how about that when “awful reyes” plays, the mets win……is that enough of a reason for you?

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Oh STFU about the freaking record.

The reason this team won with Argenis Reyes at 2nd base is because for the entire month of July, Delgado, Tatis, and Wright were liquid hot.

The reason this team lost with Castillo is because Delgado was hitting .228 through June, Beltran was mediocre for the first 3 months, the bullpen was awful (still is), and the starters were mediocre.

If you honestly believe the difference between winning and losing comes down to the 2nd baseman, well then you are a complete and utter moron.

Argenis Reyes is terrible, he did not help us win games, and your delusional if you think he did, PERIOD.

cleonsvan September 21, 2008 at 10:22 pm

totally agree – it makes no sense logically – but this isn’t about logic – dude’s cursed this team

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 5:58 pm

This team is dead.

R.I.P.

Here’s how the final choke will go down:

1) The Mets lose tomorrow, cutting the WC lead to 1(!) wil 6 tp play.

Of those 6, the Mets will beat CHI 1 game, and FL 1 game.

GUARANTEED.

You can bookmark this post. THEY WILL LOSE 5 OF THEIR FINAL 7.

Even MIL can beat that. They’re in PIT for 3 this week.

AGAIN, THEY WILL LOSE 5 OF THE NEXT 7 TO FINISH LIKE THE LOSERS THEY ARE FOR YET ANOTHER SEASON.

This was the killer loss.

The rest of this week is about slowly bleeding out.

4-6 in their last 10 (and all vs garbage teams)

Yeah, that’s not how a choke team finishes I guess…

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 6:14 pm

i don’t generally agree with any of your negative spouts and tirades, but i do have to say, i can really, really see this team losing 5 of their last 7. i’m not like you though, and i’m not saying that it WILL happen, but it wouldn’t shock me one bit. and this has nothing to do with “believing” or that I’m not as good a fan as someone else. it’s just me being realistic.

cleonsvan September 21, 2008 at 10:23 pm

back under your bridge ignorant troll

mookie September 21, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Are any of chicago’s bullpen pitchers free agents? They look unstopable.

FIRE OMAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 6:15 pm

hey what’s this i hear about hanley ramirez missing the rest of the season? honestly, have i been in a box or something? what’s the deal with this?

tinathemetsgrl September 21, 2008 at 6:36 pm

He’s got a shoulder problem or something. They were talking during the Phils game that he might be able to PH in this game and he might be back Monday against the Reds. But I’m pretty sure Hanley will be in the lineup vs. Mets next week, lol.

apingicer September 21, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Dunno who said it before, but I can’t even really enjoy the win by Big Blue. I was in the car when Delgado hit the homer, and was thinking about staying in it instead of heading into Home Depot, but I knew better, and not to my surprise, the game was over when I got back to my car.

Here’s how it gonna go from here on out:

Monday: Niese goes 6 strong, but Aramis Ramirez hits 2 run HR off Stokes in 8th and Mets lose 5-4.
Tuesday: Santana goes 9 and Mets win 2-1
Wednesday: Ollie goes 7 and Mets BP holds onto one 7-4, giving us all hope
Thursday: Pedro gives up 6 over 4 IP, and Mets lose 10-3
Friday-Sunday: Marlins sweep Mets

Manuel is not extended, Minaya is fired, Bernazard is new GM, and Manny Acta is lured away from DC to manage the Mets.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 6:20 pm

i’d almost agree with that 100% except that on Wed. there is no way the pen holds onto the victory. otherwise, pretty much spot on.

steve333 September 21, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Bernazard? Acta?
And this will be an improvement? Get Bernazard out of the organization also-and start hiring real talent, not affirmative action hires.

apingicer September 21, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Seriously, I know it’s Sunday and all, but can at least one of the ten contributors put up a post-game analysis? I mean come one!

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 6:21 pm

you’ll wait for this just like you’ll wait for the pen to implode. it’s inevitable.

September 30th, 2008- Omar Minaya Fired

FlightFromHouston September 21, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Omar fired? I pray for the day.

1985Mets September 21, 2008 at 6:34 pm

LOL your funny, Jus so you know the wilpons are in LOVE with minaya, So sorry for the bad news. Hes gona be our GM for a long time

Nails September 21, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Is it Omar’s fault that Wagner got hurt? Or that Heilman is not a good reliever any more b/c he’s a girl? Or that Feliciano has regressed?

Coming into this year, most fans here thought our bullpen was a strength. He will spend $ this year to fix the glaring problems (see Santana trade) and next year the Mets will have a good bullpen.

cleonsvan September 21, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Those without balls who think the seaosn is over – I bid you farewell. It was nice chattng with you and listening to your whines and tantrums about the orange and blue. Have fun watching football or playing golf or doing whatever else it is you do that won;t cause you any more pain.

Those without balls who think the season is over – I bid you farewell. It was nice chatting with you and listening to your juvenile whines and tantrums about the orange and blue. Have fun watching football or playing golf or doing whatever else it is you do that won;t cause you any more stress. You are all going to eat crow after this team is in the playoffs

To the rest of the real Mets fans who have the huervos to watch a pennant race – strap on your seat belts, put your hands in the air, throw your head back and scream at the top of your lungs

LET’S

GO

METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Good Ra Ra Ra speech cleonsvan. Nothing like a good pennant race, that’s true. I will root for them till the end, but even you have to admit it’s not looking to good. Nothing wrong with critizising your team when they are playing like chumps.

cleonsvan September 21, 2008 at 6:44 pm

I’ve been through too many seasons when Met baseball in September meant absolutely nothing. To me this is what its all about. We have no control over it but can only watch and feel joy or sadness. Take it for what it is and enjoy the ride. It still looks good to me. They’ll be fine xman

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Well, I commend you for staying level-headed and not jumping off the deep end like most of us Mets fans. I don’t know how you do it, the frustration sometimes gets the best of even me. I’ve also been a Mets fan since 1968 when my dad took me to my first Shea game and obviously had seen many, many bad Mets teams. I guess when expectations are so high, it’s hard to take the failures. I actually enjoyed watching more back in the 70’s when they were soooo bad but at least I knew that going in and just watched the games for the pure fun of it with no expectations of anything.

cleonsvan September 21, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Two-By-Four September 21, 2008 at 7:36 pm

I actually go back to 1962 with this team and I remember how much fun it actually was at the beginning when no one expected the Mets to even win a game. But having something to play for in September is definitely preferable to some of the woeful teams I have seen.

BTW the worst I have ever felt after a Mets loss was the deciding game against the Dodgers in the 1988 playoffs.

NY Cuban September 21, 2008 at 6:34 pm

I was extremely confident with this team until today. I don’t know what it is, but they will not make the playoffs as long as Jerry contunues to use Castillo in the lineup. I know that there was no direct correlation to today’s loss with Castillo’s performance, but I think there is more to it. There is something we don’t see. There is something that makes this team operate at a much lower rate of return when he is in there. Maybe it makes everyone “press” (especially Church) because they don’t have confidence in the guys behind them. I don’t know why, but Jose’s production also goes down when this guy is around. The sheer W-L numbers speak for themselves. For the next 7 games, WINS is all that matters, not OBP, pitches taken, zone-ratings…WINS AND LOSSES…therefore, he needs to sit on the end of the bench and clap as best he can.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 6:39 pm

correct. There is something definitely there, can’t put my finger on it. If I were Jerry, I wouldn’t be messing with what the numbers are telling him aboput when Castillo plays, even if he can’t logically agree with it, he has to not take the chance and keep playing this bum. Easley going down was a major blow to this team’s chances, I felt it as soon as he went down and I realized Castillo would get the bulk of the playing time.

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Problem is with not playing Castilo, is Easley isn’t healthy enough to be in there every day right now. And A.Reyes can hit so we’re stuck with Castillo.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 6:53 pm

I know. It’s Castillo or bust! Oh brother!

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Sorry, you all know I meant ‘A. Reys CAN’t hit’…..

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 6:52 pm

more and more people are waking up to this fact. and it is a fact. the mets play poorly with castillo. it can’t be argued. he is the only starter (not counting pitchers) with a losing record.

1985Mets September 21, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Wow i have seen it all.

All i can say is that come Next season Minaya has to beef up this horrendous bullpen. Its this bullpen that can cause us the playoffs.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 6:43 pm

The problem with your comment 1985Mets is you know what?……………………………..

That fact that you used the word “Bullpen” to describe collection of misfits that the Mets keep trotting out there every game. Do you honestly thing they qualify to be called a “Bullpen” just becuase they are used in relief? Not in my book. I don’t blame you though, it’s been so long since we’ve actually had a bullpen that I don’t blame you for not knowing what one looks like! LOL

Or the word ‘manage@ment’ (without the @, of course).

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 7:00 pm

I know argenis can’t hit. But when he plays, the Mets win. When castillo plays, more than half the time we lose. In-arguable. BTW, today’s loss cost us the division.

toomanyuniforms September 21, 2008 at 7:02 pm

And here I was, eating crow. The boneless, free-range crow fillets are going into the freezer until the spineless, no-range Mets dredge up their collective backbone.

Bullpen – ugh. Reyes, Church . . . basically everyone but Wright and Delgado – ugh. Even Daniel-Boy, the new Golden Child, everyone’s favorite future star, picked a bad time to be an actual rookie.

Heilman and Schoeneweis have to go. I don’t care what Schoeneweis’ ERA is. When the chips are down, so is he. And please, next year, LIMIT JOE SMITH’S INNINGS . . . I’m begging you.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 7:07 pm

joe smith has had to clean up SO MANY messes this year. SO MANY……as a result, today happens. it goes back to aaron, schoe, and duaner being so miserable.

imtiredofguiseppefranco September 21, 2008 at 7:05 pm

alright guys, i know today was tough but we have to be faithful. if and i mean if the mets make the playoffs i see a few of these crap guys we have now stepping up in the big spot. i know im dreaming but there is still a possibility of this happening

MealTicket September 21, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Blaming Castillo for this mess, or blaming Jerry for not putting in ______________ (name of pitcher other than the one who lost today’s game) is ludicrous.

There is a more profound failure on this team, a team made up of very talented players. It’s a failure to adjust to changing circumstances in the game, or across the season. It’s a failure of baseball intelligence. Players on other teams quickly learn that several of our relievers can’t find the plate, and they stand there patiently, racking up walk after walk. Veteran pitchers on other teams make a mediocre rookie (like Argenis) look foolish. Meanwhile, experienced Met pitchers are burned–repeatedly, day in and day out–by teenagers just up from AA. Met “sluggers” strike out looking–in high-leverage situations–against pitchers with ERAs over 6.

Recent lapses of baseball intelligence (and execution) include: Pelfry’s inability to lay down a bunt, and Beltran’s inexplicable decision to bunt in an RBI situation (with stone-cold Ryan Church on deck). As well as the streak–which must be the worst in MLB–of allowing RBIs when Met pitchers have worked the count to 0-2.

We hear day-in-and-day out that so-and-so is “pressing,” trying to win it all with a single swing of the bat. Well, intelligent players STOP pressing in such circumstances. They shorten up and try to go the other way. They try to draw the walk.

What we fail to realize is just how poor this team has been at situational baseball since mid-season last season. No one’s saying they’re not a good, talented team. They’re just not smart.

toomanyuniforms September 21, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Well said. Whatever it is, these guys cannot perform when the situation presents the slightest bit of (a) pressure or (b) complexity. Too much time in nightclubs? (Reyes) Not enough time in nightclubs? (Beltran) Who knows? You’re dead on, though. It’s not only the bullpen — everybody has problems, e.g., Jorge Campillo, Odalis Perez and Jon Lannan as ca. ‘95 Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 7:17 pm

amazing post……however, we still play a TON better without castillo, and the fact that Jerry keeps going to Scho and Heilman shows he isn’t thinking outside the box enough.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 9:21 pm

that is exactly correct, and that goes directly to HOJO. He is the one that should have been fired when willie was let go, and he is the one who should be fired now. i don’t know how people can’t see this. i loved the guy when he was a player, but what experience does he have? there is a reason that a team of allstars routinely cannot get runs with 2 men on base and no outs, or a man on 3rd with less than 2 outs. hojo is the problem. he must go.

jimyager September 21, 2008 at 7:06 pm

How far can we hope to go IF we make the playoffs with a pen this bad? Does anybody here feel comfortable when the pen takes over? This loss is just another reason why we are in trouble. All the other teams won and we lost ground all the way around. The only good thing about it is this. Wild Card teams seem to have the advantage every year? They always seem to make it into the WS and more often than not win.

Hit The Weights Zeile September 21, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Id say if there were a way to lose a series in 2 games the mets would find a way. Does that answer your original question. All joking aside we made fun of the phillies for getting swept last year well its looking like if the brewers let us go to the playoffs thats what will happen to us this year.

magic00700magic September 21, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Well, at the all start break, look forward and said for us to have a chance to win, we need a 3 game lead going into this 7 game stretch.

Well, we are behind Phillie by 1.5 games instead. We are ahead of Milwaukee by 1.5 games for WC.

We should be thankful that Cubs have clinched (and will rest players (or at least not over play them)), and that Hanley Ramirez is injured and will not play.

Our offense may have a chance to overcome the flaws of our pen. But this will only get us into the playoffs. Once in, it will be like waiting to watch a car crash happen over and over again.

I will bring a tums to ever game if we make it.

LIMetfan74 September 21, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Dude we couldnt beat the no name braves. I dont care if the Cubs clinched its still not going to be easy.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 7:26 pm

we lost the NL East today….next stop, losing the WC…….this team is pathetic and it looked great until the return of Castillo.

X-Man September 21, 2008 at 7:32 pm

LOL. I know it’s not the intellgent thing to say from a baseball perspective, but a day or two before castillo was scheduled to come off the DL and the Mets were flying high, I called it. I said on here the day Castillo returns to this team we will see a shift back to loosing baseball. Man don’t ask me why, I wish I knew, but the wins/loss records bares it out. I know I should know better, but I just had that feeling and now my worst fears are coming through. Yeah, Castillo baby!!!!

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 7:43 pm

i said it on the FAN……i had a sinking feeling in my stomach when I heard he would be back….the biggest thing he does is ruin Jose, which when Jose is bad, the Mets don’t win.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 7:48 pm

How does he “ruin” Reyes? Does he slip him some pot, or alcohol during games?? Pour bleach in his eyes?? Cut his achilles tendons???

The reason the Mets are losing right now is the BULLPEN. It has nothing to do with Castillo.

And, while I find it ridiculous, if somehow, the players on this team are playing bad JUST because Castillo is on the field… then they’re stupider than some of the people who post on here.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:01 pm

the record speaks for itself. no one else has a losing record.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Sorry, but I use logic and reason when I think, not “mystical” bullsh*t.

Argenis Reyes has 0 hits in his llast 24 ABs.

Argenis Reyes is hitting .219

Argenis Reyes OBP is .259, which is actually higher than his .245 SLG percentage

He has ONE extra base hit and FOUR walks all YEAR

He was terrible in the minors, and he is even worse in the majors…

If Jerry has a brain, the most time he’ll see on the field is as an occasional pinch runner…

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 8:08 pm

No, the record does not “speak for itself”, your just one of the many idiots on here who has an extreme and stupid bias against Castillo.

I don’t like Castillo, It was retarded to sign him to a 4 year contract, and I hope for the love of god he gets released during the offseason.

But for right now, with Easley out, he is our best 2B option, and he is NOT the reason this team is losing..

metsjam September 21, 2008 at 8:41 pm

For the people who want to support Castillo by looking at the stats I want to point out two things. One, his stats are not too good. They’re even worse when you consider that his hits are less valuable than other people’s hits because they are usually little bleeders thru the infield and don’t move people around the bases (and yes, I’m aware the same argument applies to Reyes.) The second point is the more important one. Some people are losers. I’ve played a lot of sports thru the years. There are some people, that no matter how good they look, you just do not want them on your team because they lose. I don’t know for sure if that applies to Castillo. But I know, at a gut level, I just dread when he is in the lineup.

cleonsvan September 21, 2008 at 10:27 pm

he’s bad luck I agree. it make no sense but the numbers are the numbers

number15 September 21, 2008 at 7:31 pm

I usually hate it when people complain about the maintenance of this website (i.e. advertisements, spelling/punctuation errors, updating the standings, etc), but I have to say it’s starting to get frustrating having to wait til the next day for a post-game analysis…

ChuckC September 21, 2008 at 7:40 pm

You cant win if you cant execute the fundamentals. I knew we were going to lose the game once Pelf could not lay down a sac. bunt. You cant screw that kind of stuff up and expect to win.

ChuckC September 21, 2008 at 7:42 pm

If I see Heilman throw one more pitch this season I’m going to be sick.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 7:44 pm

well u definitely will b/c Jerry can’t seem to stop using him and Schoe.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 7:58 pm

The Argenis Factor … The Mets are 16-6 in games in which Argenis has had at least 2 ABs. I excluded the 1-AB games because games where he merely pinch hit he probably didn’t have much impact on either way.

Pure coincidence? Maybe. He certainly hasn’t hit much. But the numbers are interesting nevertheless and shouldn’t be ignored if the trend continues.

I’m tired of complaining about the crappy bullpen. Omar needs to fix it big time this winter.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:03 pm

yup…..and their record with castillo starting is under .500…….but it’s not about win/losses , it’s about OBP right?

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 8:13 pm

It’s about playing the best players, you simpleton.

I know this isn’t really comparable but…

If the Cardinals with Albert Pujols go, let’s say, 27-45, and then Pujols goes down, and they get Miguel Cairo as their 1B replacement, and the Cardinals go 27-10 during the time Pujols is out, should they keeps Pujols on the bench because they lost with him…

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 8:18 pm

If that happened over a prolonged period of time, then you’d have to at least look at it and ask why. But I don’t know how good the analogy is since Castillo is such a marginal player to begin with now. He is NOT Pujols-like at any time or in any way.

When Kent went down, the Dodgers stopped losing and started winning and Kent was one of their best offensive players.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 8:19 pm

Put another way, Pujols doesn’t do anything to hurt his team. But Castillo hurts his team with his bat and with his glove now. At least Argenis helps the team with his glove.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 8:13 pm

It could be all a coincidence, but the sample size is sufficient to at least warrant a close look. Unfortunately, I don’t think Omar thinks that way. But maybe Manuel does. Hopefully.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Maybe defense is part of the Argenis Factor. If both Castillo and Reyes had enough innings played, Castillo would be last in the majors in ZR among qualified players at his position. That’s dead last. OTOH, Argenis would be near the top.

That’s a big fall from the gold glove caliber player Castillo used to be. He is now a big liability at 2nd base due to his limited range. Nice going, Omar, for giving him a 4-year deal. His ZR 2 years from now might be amazingly bad.

Mets are jockeying for the ML lead in blown saves. They now have 29, just one behind the Cards and Seattle. Nice going, Omar.

Two-By-Four September 21, 2008 at 10:51 pm

“The Argenis Factor”

Sound like something from the Sci-Fi channel. :)

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 7:59 pm

For all those who post here to say that “this team is done” or “this team won’t win another game” or “this season is over” or other such statements, do us a favor and don’t watch anymore games and/or post here on Metsblog. If you feel it ’sover, why bother watching or commenting anymore. Move on and do something else in your life. And if they do make the postseason, don’t bother hopping back on the bandwagon.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:12 pm

do you really expect this team to make the playoffs, or win the NL east, when they went 2-4 against a AAA version of the Braves?

the_other_matt September 21, 2008 at 8:02 pm

I’m gong to contacte the Cherokee Nation to hire a Rain Dancer to come all week after the fifth inning…

ChuckC September 21, 2008 at 8:05 pm

We will be lucky to win the wild card. Face it.. We are just not that good.. Besides tha lack of pitching talent there is no fight in this team. No hunger. Just a bunch of guys who think they are better then they actually are…

Hit The Weights Zeile September 21, 2008 at 8:27 pm

theyre a team playing scared at the worst time of the year to do so. the phillies embrace this part of the year, the mets fear it.

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 8:08 pm

So the reason for Met losses is the fact that Luis Castillo is playing and not the fact that the bullpen is just plain awful and cannot be counted on to hold a lead in the late innings of any kind.

Glad to know. I guess if A. Reyes had played, The bulpen would’ve gone 1-2-3 in the eighth and the ninth.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:13 pm

maybe the team would be more focused i don’t know. but i do know that with argenis we are 16-6, and with luis we are under .500……….does winning matter to you, or do you get a boner from seeing an all-star roster?

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Do you get a boner watching Argenis Reyes?? I’m guessing you do, right?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:17 pm

no but i like when the mets WIN! when argenis or easley play, they win. and when castillo plays, the lose more than they win. PERIOD.

fongulalou September 21, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Can you make apoint w/o being vulgar?

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 8:22 pm

And what did A Reyes contribute to any of those wins? Absolutely nothing. The teams win in spite of him. I’m sure none of the Mets are clamoring for A. Reyes to be in the lineup. Just more Met fan rationalization for why we win or lose . Rather then focusing on the obvious reason. The complete lack of a bullpen. Unless, Reyes can go out and pitch some scoreless innings coming out of the bullpen, his playing has no affect.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:28 pm

did you ever watch those games he played? or did you just look at his stat line at the end of the night? he was always in the middle of a rally, or a great defensive play, and he energized Jose, and kept Jose focused. The youth movement saved our year. Now that this old cancer is back, the excitement is gone.

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Here I thought it was the revitalization of Delgado that is the main reason for the Mets success. Now, I find out all along it has been A. Reyes who has been the main cause. I feel like Don Corleone realizing it was Barzini all along and not Tataglia.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 9:09 pm

How about a starter having to throw only X number of pitches in an inning instead of x+7? And as a result, he can last longer into the game, and minimize the impact the Mets crappy bullpen can have on a game?

That’s the effect a good defense can have on a pitcher.

apingicer September 21, 2008 at 8:18 pm

There’s a stupid comment. As Reyes goes, so does the Mets. Argenis has a positive effect on the team, Castillo does not. Neither guy can hit, so it doesn’t matter who plays.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:22 pm

actually the record dictates that it does matter. 16-6 versus being under .500 is a lot of matter.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Explain Argenis’s “positive effect”?

The records mean NOTHING

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:32 pm

lolol this is laughable….”the record means nothing”…..so you feel that the yankees are a better team than the rays, b/c the yankees have much better numbers, except of course wins.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Oh, and NO … the reason the team is losing isn’t just because Castillo is in the lineup. The bullpen stinks. But why exacerbate a bad team by putting in a weak-hitting second baseman who is now a defensive liability?

Argenis can’t hit either, but at least he shores up the defense down the middle … most likely cutting down on the other team scoring … and he may bring some intangibles like energy that Castillo doesn’t have. Castillo always looks grumpy and unhappy.

kd bart September 21, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Point me toward one game where A. Reyes play at second base made a difference in a game. How would’ve Reyes won today’s game?

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I didn’t watch today’s game. It’s one of the few games all year I didn’t watch. I opted to watch the Ryder Cup instead. Good stuff.

At any rate, I’m not sure what you’re asking for. There is no way I can prove that when Argenis makes a play, Castillo wouldn’t or that when Castillo misses a ball, Argenis would have gotten it. But the numbers don’t lie. Argenis fields more balls at second base cleanly for outs than does Castillo. And you can’t say this doesn’t have an impact on the starting pitcher as well as the opposition’s ability to score runs.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:40 pm

not to mention the overall team’s attitude, jose reyes’ performance, and the energy level that is all totally soured with castillo’s presence. You know, this exact team, sans castillo was exciting and fun to watch, and dominant, in 2007 too. Then it came back in ‘08 when he was gone. Now we have the same old miserable team and he is the only difference. Castillo and his sub .500 record as a Met, a record only he possesses on this team.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Great day. Mets lose that gut wrenching garbage today. Phils win, Brewers win. No Jet game to take my mind off. Giants win. And now I’m watching this stupid Yankee Stadium garbage.

At least the Pats lost? Yipeee…

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Heilman prob couldn’t strike out a blind person!

Hit The Weights Zeile September 21, 2008 at 8:29 pm

thats an insult to blind people. heilman couldnt strike out an inflatable doll with a bat taped to its hand.

apingicer September 21, 2008 at 8:16 pm

So, basically here it is:
Easley: can flat out rake, defense is spotty, but is injured
Castillo: can’t hit worth a lick, plays great defense, for some reason makes the rest of the team play like crap when he’s in the lineup
A. Reyes: can’t hit worth a lick, plays great defense, but the team wins when he is in the lineup

So why are we playing Castillo again? He can’t hit, but neither can Argenis. But they win when Argenis is in the lineup. Again, why are we playing Castillo? Face it, when Le Stache (Valentin) was playing second, he was a calming influence on Jose Reyes, kept him in line. Valentin went down, Reyes started tanking. Argenis came in, and obviously they have fun together. Castillo has a negative effect on Jose for some odd reason. Manuel needs to stick to his guns and sit Castillo’s butt down!

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:19 pm

castillo’s defense is significantly worse than argenis AND easley. he is a cancer. the team was firing on all cylinders from the time he left till the time he came back. since he’s been back we’ve struggled to get on a roll, and have seen a LOT of poor offensive and defensive games.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 8:36 pm

HOW IS HE A CANCER??? Elaborate, and for once, use something other than the record.

Castillo is a WAY better hitter than Argenis, and while his defense is a lot worse, it doesn’t overshadow the fact that his offense is much better.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:44 pm

the record is the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IN A TEAM GAME! This isn’t fantasy baseball! And castillo is not even better than Argenis with the bat. They are both poor, but at least when Argenis plays, THE TEAM WINS.

fongulalou September 21, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Umm, Luis plays because the Boss gave him a fat, juicy,
long term deal he’ll never be able to get out of.
Plus, of course he’s FOJ!

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Castillo: can’t hit worth a lick, plays great defense

That’s not even true. His ZR would place him dead last among qualified second basemen if he had enough innings played.

I suspect this is one reason the team suffers when Castillo is at second. He doesn’t cut down a lot of balls through the right side you’d expect a good second baseman to get to.

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 8:16 pm

fongulalou September 21, 2008 at 8:28 pm

indeed!

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:20 pm

a true met fan likes when the Mets win…..that means they SHOULD want argenis or easley to play, and luis to be sent home NOW….

fantasy baseball fans like castillo.

Who are the METS fans?

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Screw you, I am a true Mets fan, I just don’t act like an idiot, believing that someone with a .504 OPS has a positive effect on the team.

I want the Mets to win. It is counterproductive to winning when you start terrible baseball players like Argenis Reyes.

16-6 and Castillo’s record mean NOTHING because there are so many other variables that have to be taken into effect…

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:45 pm

why take the chance? apparently castillo’s contributions to his team leads to a losing record. how can i put this simply for you pretend mets fans to understand.

Luis Castillo = more losses than wins. FACT.

Ceetar September 21, 2008 at 10:08 pm

You’re math is just wrong. A doesn’t directly imply B.

I’m sure I could find an equally stupid argument. Mets record when they have a promotion, versus when they don’t.

Mets record during Bronze games versus Silver.

Games in the black uniforms versus grey.

But none of them are anything but a coincidence. You can pretty much make numbers say _anything_.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:47 pm

and obviously starting argenis ISN’T counterproductive, as when he starts they are 16-6. or perhaps you enjoy when the Mets are sub .500, perhaps to you THAT is productive.

Ellen September 21, 2008 at 8:58 pm

I agree and beside the fact that no consideration is given to the other positions that are platooned.

How is that the Schneider/Castro/Cancel platoon is not affecting the so-called “chemistry”? How do we know that when Perez is on the mound, 5 other position players are not negatively affected? See how ridiculous that sounds?

And I do not see where Castillo’s fielding has repeatedly lost games either.

Can we just get back to the real problem with this Mets team – the pen and the offense going home early after the 4th inning?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:03 pm

the offense and pen were always like this all year…..however, we won a LOT of games in castillo’s absense. now, we are struggling to stay consistent.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Let’s say this:

FORGET STATS, or ANYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT A TEAM……

If I were to tell you there are two formations of a team, the A team and the B team. The A team is many games over .500. The B team is under .500. Does it matter what exactly makes up team A, or is it more important that that is clearly, for whatever reason, the better formula?

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 8:50 pm

Oliver Perez’s ERAs:

April- 4.03
May- 5.58
June- 5.28
July- 1.38
August 3.52
September: 5.82

Carlos Delgado

Pre ASB: .248, .783 OPS
Post ASB: .292, .987 OPS

Fernando Tatis:

1.230 OPS in July

David Wright: OPS over 1000 in July

Jose Reyes best month in July

Mike Pelfrey : ERA under 3 in July and August

Castillo went down July 2nd, and came back at the end of August

Aren’t those easily the better reasons for the records

Or is Castillo just a cancer?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:52 pm

all of those good things happened as soon as he left…..and everything came crashing down last year on the mets when castillo arrived. but i understand you not really liking the mets winning. its all about a team full of overpaid old former all stars for you. thats cool. i prefer wins, but hey, more power to you.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:53 pm

and i said forget stats…..which team would you rather have play? team A who wins, or team B who loses?

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 8:58 pm

Last year was the same thing. Before they got Castillo, the team did really well. I think they were well under .500 after he came.

Is is just a coincidence that over the course of more than 1 year, the team plays its best when Castillo is gone? And when he comes back they do worse?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:01 pm

you could have said yes, just coincidence, it was willie. but willie did really well until castillo came, and the vibe changed. his players stopped playing for him. look, willie was an amateur, but he got results before that gimpy f^ck came along and ruined the vibe this team had.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 9:03 pm

“Played really well”

If you consider under .500 for 2 straight months playing well, but ok…

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:06 pm

how about the mets being the best team in the NL in ‘06 and the first half of ‘07? what changed? who came in that suddenly they were an unfocused team? why are you on this guys jock so bad the Mets LOSE when he plays!

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 9:00 pm

And you can’t just ignore the impact that Castillo’s bad defense has on the pitching. It could account for starters having to throw more pitches, thus being pulled from games earlier and bringing in the pen earlier.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 8:55 pm

2 types of fans:

1 is who likes to win, no matter who plays.
the other wants to brag about what great names they have on the lineup card. the latter are known as Yankees fans.

Ceetar September 21, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Type 1 Wants Castillo because he gives them the best shot to win.

type 2 wants Argenis, because he’s a great name to have. Look at that sparkling young second baseman! blah blah..

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 9:12 pm

K Everyone, here are the numbers. I just went back and counted every game where Castillo got more than 1 AB (yeah it’s a slow night).

Mets with Castillo 35-41

Mets Without Castillo 51-28

Come up with your own conclusions

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:14 pm

but Castillo is kinda a better htter than argenis, so who cares about winning and losing!

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 9:18 pm

(Bangs head on desk)

Anyone who thinks the difference between this team losing and winning is the 2nd baseman, needs to get a clue.

There are so many other variables to be looked at with the records…

But I hate winning, and just love only stats, right Metsmad???

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:21 pm

yes……..and it may not be the only thing, for sure…..but getting rid of one BIG problem, castillo, would have been the difference between two years of collapse.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Replace him with who??

Kaz Matsui? Easley, coming off a horrific injury, someone else?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:25 pm

easley and argenis reyes!!!! the team was KILLIN IT with them! did you not enjoy the july and august we had???????

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:15 pm

btw, there is your difference between owning this division and not making the playoffs.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 9:14 pm

Last year, Valentin, Easley and Gotay ALL had significantly higher zone ratings at second base than Castillo.

I think the impact of defense up the middle is under-appreciated. It’s not necessarily about errors, but range or lack thereof. A ball that gets by Castillo won’t be called an error, but it’s a play that someone like Argenis and even Gotay were more likely to make. And when that play isn’t made, it puts more stress on the starter, and in turn the bullpen. That’s how you can lose games more often when Castillo is in the lineup.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 9:18 pm

The sad thing is that Castillo’s zone rating has been falling steadily since 2004. Unfortunately, Omar doesn’t believe in stats or the inevitability of decline in older players. If Omar were smarter, he would not have given Castillo a 4-year deal.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:17 pm

anyone know the mets record from the day castillo went to the DL till the day he came back, and then the day he came back till now?

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 9:17 pm

I will GUARANTEE you that the Mets will be eliminated on Sat.

That final game will be meaningless………….and ugly.

The Mets are going 2-5 this week.

GUARANTEED

Ceetar September 21, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Wishing it doesn’t make it true Phillies fan.

got to 20k yet?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Mets by month in games Castillo played more than one AB

March/April: 10-10
May: 10-11
June: 8-13
August 3-1
September 2-6

el_giacomo September 21, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Just got back home from Atlanta…

Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn.

Nothin’ I hate more than sitting in a sea of screaming and cheering Braves fans…

Ugh…

Didn’t help that there were even some “Let’s Go Phillies!” chants goin’….

This game was very typical of the Mets bad-game formula this year. Score early. Good starting pitching. Bats go to sleep. Bullpen blows it.

It was cool, however, to see so many Mets fans there at Turner for the sold-out game. Shame the outcome wasn’t different. :(

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Last year we had to suffer through Mota and Sosa. What did Omar do? Go out and sign Matt Wise to a big contract and leave all the same guys in there from 06′-07′. The guy stunk before he went on the 60 day DL.

I will say Omar couldn’t have suspected that Heilman wasn;’t gonna be able to get ANYONE out or that Wagner would go down (though he is 36). No one thought Sanchez would be this bad either.

However Shoenweis is as bad as he was last year in big spots.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Heilman’s been going downhill since 2006. He doesn’t have the makeup for the pen. Omar should have traded Heilman after last season, if not sooner.

To rely on Heilman + a guy coming off of a major shoulder injury + Show + an aging closer + Wise is not a prescription for success.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:28 pm

sylar’s dream team:

1B alex rodriguez
2B alex rodriguez
3B alex rodriguez
SS arod

sometimes, winning teams have no names who contribute, and THAT is usually very very fun……sorry argenis is ruining your fantasy baseball league.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 9:43 pm

You are a complete and utter fool.

First off, I don’t play fantasy baseball.

Second, the reason teams with no names win, is because they have good players protecting him.

Third, why do you keep goading me??? You obviously have no intentions of reasoning with anything I say, so why the antagonism?

Fourth, I like the Mets and the players on the Mets, but if everyone in the lineup put up A-Rod like numbers, this team would win over 100 games

Fifth, get your IQ checked, it’s probably in the 60s

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:48 pm

b/c you are easily goaded…..it’s not opinion that castillo brings the team down, it’s a fact. the proof is in the record, aka he is the ONLY ONE with a losing record. you don’t understand baseball, you maybe havent watched enough to realize that good teams, no great teams, need to click. when castillo is not there, this team clicks. when he is, they struggle to be consistent. and the PROOF IS IN THE RECORD. so stop yelling at me with stats and OBP and dissing Argenis when in fact Argenis played, and we won, so I like him, regardless of his numbers. I like WINNING.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Um no, I definitely understand baseball.

The reason the team has a losing record with Castillo is because the entire team played terrible until July. Wagner was awful, the bullpen was awful, Pelfrey stunk until July, Perez was awful until July, Delgado and Beltran did nothing, and we had no real LF, until July.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 10:17 pm

and the reason the team played poorly is b/c luis castillo is the bad seed…..you basically proved my point. luis castillo’s presence negatively impacts this ball club, to the tune of a sub .500 record.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 10:41 pm

No,no,no,no,NO!

My point is, Castillo has NOTHING, to do with those player’s success or failures.

There is no proof he negatively impacts the club… and no, pointing out that record doesn’t prove it.

Stop acting like a moron, and get a clue, for once.

methead September 21, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Castillo being the reason for mets losses is down right dumb. If the argument is the team’s offense is better with Easily’s bat, then I can at least understand that. But we blew 2 leads last weekend and 1 today, nothing to do with who started at 2B.

Why would someone even try to make that correlation??

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:33 pm

b/c the record is proof….do you read the posts?

Mets with Castillo 35-41

Mets Without Castillo 51-28

Met with Argenis 16-6

Ceetar September 21, 2008 at 10:00 pm

What’s the Mets record without Billy? It’s pretty good, but there aren’t many people not wishing we had him here and closing right now.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 10:12 pm

The thing is, with Billy, you have a record that goes both ways. IOW, there is no single definable trend when it comes to Billy. Before he came in 2006, the Mets didn’t do as well as when he closed in 2006.

With Castillo, the record only goes one way.

Look., I know it doesn’t seem to make sense, but the numbers are the numbers. It is what it is.

Maybe it’s just one big coincidence that’s been going on since end of July of 2007 — but I think there’s something else going on here.

methead September 21, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Makes no sense. Period. The mets bullpen is the #1 reason for our losses. Take half the blown saves and blown leads we would be in first.

what does Castillo have to do with that? I am not even defending castillo. I am arguning to stupidity of your argument. I am sure I can probably come up with a bunch of what ifs with other players.

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 9:36 pm

No one is saying he is the ONLY reason for the Mets losses or even the #1 reason. I give that honor to their bullpen. But the record is the record. The sample size is too significant not to ignore either.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:39 pm

100% agreed…..i could go on all day about Schoe and Heilman, who i’ve hated since early ‘07…….but no one would argue their sh!t!ness

Airfeet September 21, 2008 at 9:36 pm

I DONT CARE IF CASTILLO BATS 2ND OR HEILMAN PITCHES IN SAVE SITUATIONS…THE METS BETTER MAKE THE PLAYOFFS…THERE IS NO EXCUSE WITH THE TALENT ON THIS TEAM TO NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS…THEY BETTER MAKE IT…NO EXCUSES

MetsFan4Decades September 21, 2008 at 9:49 pm

LOL – I can’t beleive, on a day we blew this game because of the BP, yet again, more than half the posts are a debate about playing Castillo vs. not playing him. If only it were that easy.

Then there are those who think this team has no ‘heart’ or ‘desire’. I think it’s a testament to those very same players that we’re even in this race, considering all the injuires, especially to key players, espcially in the last month.

And last, there is the ridiculous poster who calls himself Furioso, with all his ‘guarantees’. I read those posts, I think ’sleazy car salesman’…..

dykstraw September 21, 2008 at 10:19 pm

eh, i flew off the handle before. then i shaved off my goatee. now i’m ok. let’s win tomorrow.

The Slider September 21, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Isn’t “furioso” the old “pac man”?

The Slider September 21, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Obviously, “it’s the bullpen, stupid.”

My complaint with Manuel’s use of the bullpen today is he needed to go to Ayala in the 8th inning, which is when the fire needed to be put out. I subscribe to the theory that you don’t only use your closer in the 9th. Sometimes you have to bring him in the 8th. This was one of those times.

Also, it’s clear that Manuel just cannot use either Heilman or Sanchez anymore. And I don’t say that because “they stink.” Both are not 100% healthy. Sanchez’ shoulder just hasn’t gotten its strength back and Heilman, from what I read, has a bad left knee which has been bothering him most of the year.
But, if they aren’t healthy, then they can’t help. Also, with Schoenewise, you just never know from game to game which way the pendulum is swinging with him. I trust Feliciano and Rincon more than him at this point (thank God for the Latin players!). So what should be the plan for the last seven games?

He’s my bullpen from here to end of the season:

-Ayala

-Stokes

-Rincon

-Feliciano

-Parnell

-Smith

-Knight

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Should the Mets not make the playoffs for some reason, I disagree with those saying the core must be blown up because it’s a bad combination.

They needed to keep the core-intact and build young players around them who are reliable and stay healthy and play hard.

They need to wipe clean the pen and start over, and look to fill the rotation with young arms (Niese and Parnell).

They need to continue to plug the young guys like Evans, Murphy and Carp in there and maybe get a solid vetaran outfielder who actually plays the outfield (think Ibanez or Winn).

They can’t invite every old washup to spring training and then have them all make the team and lean on them to get the team through the dog days of summer. It just doesn’t work.

Use that Alou, Pedro, El duque money coming off the books wisely.

Trading Reyes, Wright or Beltran certainly isn’t the answer. No one is gonna be able to be a good role model for Reyes. He’s either gonna mature and realize he needs to be in the game all 9 innings of 162, or he’ll never win the big one.

Joe Bacci September 21, 2008 at 10:35 pm

believe

because baseball, and pennant races are fun, not life and death. You never know what is going to happen and then if they lose, there is always next year, and if they win, you were the guy who believed, even when the odds were long and thats what makes a true Met Fan.

LETS GO METS!

The Slider September 21, 2008 at 10:41 pm

You’re right. I’m still trying to pull myself off the ground from today’s loss, but I’ll be there tomorrow night.

We have to go 5-2 and the Phillies 3-3 just for their to be a tie for the Division. Ugh.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 10:40 pm

I still do believe in the Mets – but I will say that today’s loss hurt. It reminded us to the heart of our weakness why if we do get into the playoffs – it may not be anywhere within. This loss was the third game we could have beaten the Braves in out of the six. We could have won 5 of 6 and we’d be up 1 1/2 in the NL East rather than down 1 1/2 if that had been the case.

The Phillies are holding up a lot stronger than the Mets. Outside of the bullpen, the Mets are a better team. If the Mets had the Phillies bullpen and the Phillies had the Mets bullpen – the Mets would probably have a 10 game lead on them.

What hurts is the Mets command so many games. There losses are usually not ones where other teams out play them. It’s when they lose it themselves. They went 6-6 against the Braves/Nats in these two weeks – not good for playing against these two clubs. In those 6 losses, 3 of them were legit. Even if the Mets had won 2 of the other 3, we’d still be up in the division.

The bullpen cost the Mets the game and potentially the season. Confidence. And anything of worth. If less than 50% of the Mets bullpen threw at least 10 inning the pen of 08′ going into the opening day next season – it’ll be hard to expect different results.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Why would we trade Wright? Reyes? Or Beltran? To give ourselves a hole? Look at the Mets offensive numbers. They’re good. Both as a team and individually. I don’t know about you but I like the core of guys we got now more than guys like Jeromy Burnitz and Jason Phillips.

The starting pitching is good. Retain Oliver Perez. Don’t re-sign Pedro, El Duque or any other old pitchers we don’t need. Either develop and choose to go with Niese or Parnell or look out in the market for another pitch. Try to retain and complement the Mets as they’ve usually been able to do.

The bullpen, the bullpen, the bullpen. This is where we need help. No where else. Revamp it to it’s entirety. It’s sad that the NL Wild Card leader arguably has the worse bullpen in the NL and all of baseball. It also says how strong the rest of our team is though. Let’s not forget this.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 10:46 pm

I don’t think we’ll win the division – unless both of us clinch and the Mets win a lot of their games and the Phillies fall back a little. We could have used a little more help from the Fish in this series, but knocking them off was important too.

Think about it though. Would we rather the Mets be up 1 1/2 with a week to go – or back? I know the sensible thing is to think up, but the Mets have a way of looking back at who’s chasing them. I don’t think the Phillies will go 3-3. They may lose one or two from the Nats if we’re lucky, but the Braves are just downright pitiful against them. And now it’s in Philly. You never know. The Brewers losses mean just as much at this point and they didn’t win tonight so today really hurt.

dykstraw September 21, 2008 at 11:27 pm

let’s get real. the brewers are chasing us. the phils are a pipe dream.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 10:47 pm

The Mets will win 3 of 4 against the Cubs. Don’t know how, but they’ll do it. A loss from the Phillies and/or combined with a win of their own will eventually allow them to have the best record. Why throw Zambrano than after that disaster last time? They want to rest their guys. No injuries.

I don’t know what to expect from Florida because they’re tough whether they’re alive or not. Sometimes they’re harder when they aren’t alive.

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 10:49 pm

We should have saved Pelfrey for today. Now Niese will get penciled in for Saturday – the second to last game of the season. Having your top three go straight and than last two would have helped big time. The Mets could have used Pelfrey tomorrow, but obviously needed him today but had another blown win from the pen.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Agreed, but what ya gonna do now?

They could always throw Santana on 3 days rest and Ollie on 3 days to end the season. Hopefully it doesn’t come down to that. The Brewers will throw Sabathia on 3 again. They are gonna give Seth Mcclung another start too…

Hopefully Niese doesn’t feel too much pressure tomorrow and can get through the jitters. This is a huge game against a very, very good lineup

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 10:56 pm

the mets chances at the division are over…….philly will probably lose at most 1 game down the stretch……

freubr01 September 21, 2008 at 10:59 pm

to those of you who live in the NYC metropolitan area: just be thankful you dont have to deal with phillies fans after the mets have once again blown the division…as a met fan in philly, it is utter misery

nyj0126 September 21, 2008 at 11:13 pm

i live near cherry hill in nj so you won’t be alone if this does happen lol we don’t have to gain 2 1/2 though. we only need to gain 1 1/2. and if we can gain that much on these phillies and keep up with them it’d obviously leave both these teams clinched for the playoffs. lets not give up. if the mets win and phillies lose tomorrow – we’re the same in the loss column. anything can happen.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 11:01 pm

this team is pathetic………i can’t even begin to imagine the kind of booing that is going to take place 2morrow

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 11:06 pm

That’s a horrible attitude. Look, we gotta get over this hangover from the weekend and go out and pack Shea for the next 7 days and support the squad. That includes no booing Mcslappy (no matter how bad he is).

metz1 September 21, 2008 at 11:01 pm

well maybe we can get a real closer after the season is over…what do you think Omar?

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 11:04 pm

did i just loose 2 posts because I said suc k?

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 11:04 pm

it’s not just a closer…..it’s a setup man, a real long man, a #5 pitcher not named pedro, a 2B.

rigsay September 21, 2008 at 11:07 pm

Gotta start plugging holes with kids like the Twins and A’s do. We got enough other talent to get us through and the kids aren’t gonna get hurt all the time.

f.e September 21, 2008 at 11:09 pm

the first hole that needs to b e plugged is a gm

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 11:15 pm

100% agreed……..you plug holes with young talent…..and i think the mets should sign a few FA pitchers like Pavano, Colon, Mussina, in that veign so they can A) keep draft picks B) shift Maine to the closers role C) avoid overpaying for KRod who is going to break our hearts the same as Benitez

The Slider September 21, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Parnell and Neise.

f.e September 21, 2008 at 11:13 pm

I really love all this positive stuff but reality must set in
The 2-1/2 month ride is over this team is back to what it was with willie a 500 team take it for what its worth the playoffs will make us fans feel good but if that happens its not going to be pretty this team with no pen just wont go far

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 11:16 pm

the ride started when luis castillo got hurt……it ended the day he came back…….

f.e September 21, 2008 at 11:21 pm

I AGREE 100% WITH THAT

The Slider September 21, 2008 at 11:22 pm

No, it really ended when Easley got hurt. But, again, this is a bullpen problem not a 2nd base problem.

1985Mets September 22, 2008 at 12:11 am

agree, i dont like castillo either, BUT its the bullpen who has lost at least 20 somethings games. It was not castillo.

metz1 September 21, 2008 at 11:23 pm

it would have been nice to try to trade for jon rauch. Then sign k-rod.

metz1 September 21, 2008 at 11:27 pm

i mean it doesnt seem we have the kind of bullpen that will take us to the playoffs.

metz1 September 21, 2008 at 11:38 pm

heilman replacement-jon rauch feliciano replacement-brian fuentes mean time trade for sam gervacio [young reliever that had 80 ks in 55 iniings in 2007 and a similar 2008 season.] make these moves and hopefully the bullpen is better.

4eyeJoe September 21, 2008 at 11:48 pm

heilman’s replacement should have been Steven Register in spring training. this kid could save games like joe browoski.

metz1 September 21, 2008 at 11:45 pm

who is sam gervacio? houston astro rookie that throws hard. And yes those ks came in the minors but it shows what hes capable of.

4eyeJoe September 21, 2008 at 11:45 pm

the mets bullpen is just ridiculous, i have never seen something like this before in my life……right now, i would be on my hands and knees if the mets could get the 2007 chi-sox bullpen.

memo to Jerry manuel……… the mixing and matching of relief pitchers is going to kill this team even more. do not play luis castillo for the love of god…….this guy for some unknown reason is like the plague to the mets. just look up the stats…….the mets are like 20 games above .500 without castillo!!!!!

another thing……. do not walk a guy to get to another guy please….. it has back fired every damn time. should have pitched to Chipper Jones.

The Slider September 21, 2008 at 11:46 pm

I like that kid Hanrahan on the Nats. Throws hard with movement and has spunk.

metsmad22 September 22, 2008 at 12:00 am

they have no reason to trade this guy to us…….i think we need to move maine into the closers role and sign another top flight starter.

The Slider September 22, 2008 at 1:06 am

That ain’t happening either. They want Maine to be a starter and have come out and said so.

Furioso September 21, 2008 at 11:55 pm

They’re 1.5 up in the standings, but trust me, they’re basically eliminated.

In the final 7:

Niese goes 2……that’s 2 automatic losses
Pedro goes 1…..that’s an automatic loss

And the bullpen is sure to blow at least 1.

So of the final 7, 3 of them are penciled in for losses already.

ALREADY.

Of the final four, they have to roll 4-0 to probably make the playoffs. Since they’re a bunch of choking dogs, the odds of that are very low.

THEY’RE GONNA GO 2-5 AND BE ELIMINATED ON SATURDAY.

Sylar September 22, 2008 at 12:47 am

GOOD! Then there’s absolutely no reason to watch…

Your pathetic. All you do is sing messages of doom, choke, and loserism.

You are not a Mets fan, and it’s sickening for you to claim yourself as one.

Your probably the type of person who enjoys harming small animals…

GET A LIFE, YOU STUPID WHINY TROLL.

The Slider September 22, 2008 at 1:06 am

Pac man?

patrick September 22, 2008 at 7:25 am

choking dogs would never have collectively gotten this far, they are a dog with one lame leg (the bullpen) but you go ahead and crap on their lead and tell everyone how three games are already automatically done.

Furioso September 22, 2008 at 12:01 am

It’s like a wake….they just got eliminated for all intents and purposes

Phillies fan 4 life September 22, 2008 at 12:04 am

Phils fan here,

No offense, but you guys sound pathetic right now! Get a grip with yourselves. Your team is still 1 1/2 game ahead in the wild card. You make it seem like your out of the race, when in reality your still in there. Don’t forget that the Cubs have already clinched their division, so there not going to be stupid enough to take the chance of anyone getting hurt…So techniqually you guys are some lucky sums of bytchez right now.

Okay now for a dose of reality

The Mets are pretty much still in it like I said. BUT…The truth is..”YES” your bullpen blows. If your team was bubble gum, it would be the gum that you used to get out of packs of baseball cards…You can try to make a bubble with it, but its not ”Bubble Yum”. The shyt is going to pop and fall apart as soon as you try. Don’t get me wrong…I’m not here to bash anyone, or your team. If your team went out, and spent more money on your bullpen, rather than signing Santana as your savior. Not to mention Wagner was definitly the final knockout blow. Good luck this week guy’s. I truly hope you make it in the Post season.

mylegshurt September 22, 2008 at 12:05 am

For the “blame Castillo” gang: run Church’s post injury numbers against Castillo’s and then tell me who’s had the more negative impact on the Mets. Dont forget to factor in Church’s greater overall importance to the Mets lineup.

1985Mets September 22, 2008 at 12:10 am

For all who jumped on the CHURCH wagon, Did you guys really think he would last. No i sure did not. He’s a good bench player, thats about it. Yes he did had a great start but he is not the type of player that can sustain the endurance to play 162 GAMES.

metsmad22 September 22, 2008 at 12:31 am

hard to judge considering he had two concussions this year……..however, i think very soon lastings will be a player we will regret having let go…..he’s learned to go the other way nicely…in the end, it will be a bad trade.

rigsay September 22, 2008 at 12:49 am

Yes, we better get the most out of Church and Schneider in the next yr or two, because for the next 10 the trade is gonna look horrible while Millege is putting up 25/25 seasons.

4eyeJoe September 22, 2008 at 12:58 am

the mets need to wake up as a whole in final home stand at Shea and Jerry manuel needs to wake up too. the mets need to flat out play aggressive small ball in the late innings…… do some drag bunting or regular bunts…….hit and run………run from 1st to 3rd……swipe some bags…….this team needs to manufacture runs and not wait for the big hit be it a single or a homerun.

jose reyes needs to start putting the ball in play on the infield when there are men on base. he needs to stop putting the ball in the air. take the walks………try to make a pitcher balk.

david wright needs to drop a bunt once in a while when the bases are loaded……( i understand that he is the best hitter on the team)…..david needs to surprise the opposing team.

jerry……please…do some suicide squeeze…..and no more castillo in the lineup.

put Endy chavez in right field in the next game if Ryan Church continues to swing at low balls and go 0 for 4 tomorrow.

rigsay September 22, 2008 at 1:03 am

I agree with all points except Wright bunting with the bases loaded. That’s crazy. The guy is starting to swing a hot stick again. We have too many guys cold in the lineup to be sacrificing power from the few places we get it…

patrick September 22, 2008 at 7:09 am

As everything gets reviewed, rewound and reworked for the final 7 days…

Lets just all sit back and realize and no one be surprised that the reason the Mets are where they are is that the bullpen is filled with a plethora of very small gutted individuals.

As such even when they are poised to succeed they get BURNED, see Show yesterday, throws to consecutive spot sliders and the second is check swing flare to score the tying run.

And this goes all the way back to when Wee Willie Wagner was still here too.

If this bullpen was able to save just TWO, just TWO of the terrible mishaps they have dealt the rest of their teammates, they would head to Shea tonight with still a half game lead.

Smith is worth keeping and Feliciano despite his ups and downs still can get a big out more often than not.

Nobody else in that disaster should sniff a uniform at Citi Field next year.

I am not saying the Mets must get Rodriquez because I think that is a sinful amount of money for a guy I would expect to be visiting Dr. Andrews in the next 24 months. But they need to sit guys down in their system, like Kunz and Parnell among others and say, opportunity knocks, if you throw strikes and do not fear taking the ball you will pitch next year, success 100% of the time is not expected, but failure by fear of throwing inside or having the ball hit is not acceptable.

stickguy September 22, 2008 at 7:26 am

A little harsh. but not too much!

Ight now out of the pen, I would take Smith, Stokes and Ayala for next year.

Smith as a righty specialist+. Stokes and Ayala as some sombo of set up guys and long man (stokes could be a swing guy).

Heilman needs to go someplace to start. Pedro F and Schoe I have seen enough of.

I actually am really intriqued by Parnell. he could be the type of guy that can move into the closer role (your cretive thinking), or maybe a shut-down 8th inning guy.

SO from the guys on hand, Smith, Ayala, Parnell and Stokes is 4 spots (hey, I am a math wizz!)

So Omar needs to fill in the final 3 spots. AT least 2 lefties, and (a big and) a closer unless you want to give Parnell or stokes or (eek) Ayala the job.

who knows, maybe Kunz will blossom by the spring and become a viable option.

So, IMO, while th epen needs a serious overhaul, it isn’t quite as bad as some people think.

Mostly need to get some young power arms in there, and a shut down closer type would be nice.

It can be done. The phils got one for basically nothing this year!

patrick September 22, 2008 at 7:13 am

for everyone ready and willing to throw this on Ryan Church, can you please go back and remember that sans Church in April and early May the Mets likely have another 5 losses in the bank.

Comparing him to the woeful and wounded Luis Castillo is just pathetic. Castillo is an eyesore on the field.

dazedandconfused September 21, 2008 at 4:45 pm

STRAND HIM IN ATLANTA!!!!!!!!!

cleonsvan September 21, 2008 at 6:46 pm

easy there fella – take a breath..

want to see teams that are really bad? Try living in KC or Pitt or anywhere else where teams are playing for nothing.

tomorrow is new day – keep the faith brother

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Because stats like OBP stress how good a player is, and team records have to do with EVERY player on the team, not just the 2nd baseman.

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:07 pm

the Yankees, a team better fit for you type of fan, have a TON of players with great OBP……that doesn’t mean they work as a unit to win……get off the stat lines and WATCH THE GAMES!

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 9:21 pm

How come you stress OBP but not ZR?

ZR can have as much impact on a game as OBP, especially if the player isn’t particularly clutch.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 9:21 pm

I watch every game, and can effectively tell you, that Argenis Reyes has been DETRIMENT to this team.

You must be one of those people who take the gritty David Eckstein over the choky Alex Rodriguez, right??

metsmad22 September 21, 2008 at 9:22 pm

the difference in production from argenis to castillo is negligible. if you wanna use arod, i’d equate it to this:

i’d rather have manny ramirez over arod.

miker94 September 21, 2008 at 10:00 pm

well, saying that a. reyes has been a detriment is a bit much. you really can’t argue with the fact that he is better defensively and they are both horrible at the plate. then you couple that with the fact that the mets win more games when a. reyes is in and it seems like a no brainer to me.

Sylar September 21, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Castillo is hitting .291 with RISP, .270 with 2 outs, and he has very good OBPs in both.

The reason I don’t stress defense as much, because while it is important, offense is more important

Free Aaron Heilman III September 21, 2008 at 9:41 pm

Who said offense, especially considering Castillo’s unimpressive OPS, is more important than defense up the middle?

Also, I understand it’s the only thing we have, but traditional situational stats are a poor way to measure clutchness.
