Note: Daniel Murphy’s Nickname
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 22, 2008 1:27 pm

This season, Daniel Murphy is batting .343 in 108 at bats.

However, he is 0 for his last nine, with three strike outs, since getting a pinch-hit RBI double on Friday night.

I have noticed several fans referring to Murphy as ‘D-Rex,’ while writing in MetsBlog’s comments section and on message boards around the Internet.

In an e-mail sent to me over the weekend, Geoff M explains, “He looks like a T-Rex with his tiny arms pulled back and his hulking legs taking big strides.  That, with the tenacious attitude, made us name him D-Rex.”

That’s pretty funny.  I think I like it.

  1. I think I like it too, but are we really so lazy that we need to give everyone a nickname? We can’t just call him Daniel Murphy?

I’m just thinking that since F-Mart earned the “teenage hitting machine” moniker, his production went downhill. Which is of course not to say that there is a correlation…

wow…..way to think everything is a jinx man…
i’m guessing you also walk down the streets not stepping on a crack because you are in fear that your mothers’ back will break?

      • No, not really :-)

I was careful to note that there was probably little correlation, and I should probably have said there is likely no causal relationship at all.

But you know, baseball and superstition go hand in hand.

      I agree with Snrub.

  2. stickguy says:

just call him the starting 1B fro 2009-2019 and number 2 hitter on the Mets.

  3. bkfitz says:

Can we not make up nicknames for our players? It’s what separates us from Braves fans. I always was proud that we never made up nicknames like “Frenchy” or “Salty”.

  4. Stem Ad says:

Hey Krumbinator, yes we do need nicknames, makes us seem like better fans when people hear us screaming nicknames at a bar. They say “Gee, thats a stupid name, but he must be one SERIOUS fan for knowing that name!”

But really, I like the nicknames, dunno why, but I do… This one aint bad, might try it out tonight if he is in a big spot!

  5. mrose says:

i see no problem with nicknames if they aren’t incredibly stupid
like people who say something like (this is just an example cause i can’t think of a real one right now) but carlos “i hit big home runs” delgado..those are plain dumb

    D-Rex is good

What about the Irish Hammer and where did it originate from?

    • londoncatfish says:

we’ve been rocking the “Irish Hammer” moniker over at Amazin Avenue since mid-August. It seems to have stuck to young Daniel pretty well.

    • shannon says:

first time I heard it was from Brandon on The Wheelhouse

  7. moogman says:

    Sounds like a cartoon character.

Dan Murphy – .300 hitter is a better nickname

  8. SovereignRonnie says:

So long as it’s not the “First initial – First syllable of Last Name” moniker, I’m cool with it. Irish Hammer, D-Rex are much cooler than “D-Murph.”

    S-Ron.

  9. professor met says:

Rex also means “king,” an appelation he can have if he can manufacture a few more clutch hits.

  10. Dirtysanchez says:

    i like dantheman murphy

  11. Cactus says:

D-Rex? If they’re sticking with the Tyrannosaurus theme, I prefer “Tranny Danny”

  12. dap260 says:

Who on earth could possibly care about what this guys nickname will or will not be.

All I give a flying flip about right now is who is going to step up and make sure that this team wins the division.

Trust me if that does not happen, or even worse they miss the playoffs altogether – the last nickname you will have to be worrying about is Daniel Murphy’s.

    Wow, Bang a Gong!

  14. ugbmets21 says:

i was wondering is he is in the long term future of this team? i happen to like him a lot. and i can see him here with WRIGHT,PELF,REYES,SANTANA, MAINE…

my ? is, what has the organization said about his future. i herd hes gana play winter ball at 2nd,

i mean i dont see nick evans as an everyday player. most likely bench player.

    does anyone know?

ILL GET MY D-REX JERSEY TODAY!

    • G_Lunt says:

I don’t know if Minaya has come out and officially stated Dan Murphy will be a part of the future of the organization, but from what we’ve seen so far, how could he not be? .348 average aside, the professionalism of not only his at-bats but his personality have got to make you think that he is a keeper.

    • G_Lunt says:

      .343 excuse me

  15. cousinrk says:

    How about Kid Dynamite?

I think the nicknames for our bullpen arms would be a more entertaining post.

    • jedimynd says:

      How about “The Bullpen Blows”

    • phoola says:

      Duaner “Softball” Sanchez
      Scott “Hit the Showers” Schoenweiss
Joe “I thought it was a good pitch until he hit it” Smith
      Brian “Strokes” Stokes
      Luis “Oy Vey” Ayala
Aaron “All Hits, All The Time” Heilman

  16. SaltyF says:

    Daniel the Maniel

  17. murphdawg says:

    i perosnally like murph dog

  18. X-Man says:

“Pig Pen” just about sums it up.

  19. Danny says:

Is anyone else tired of the one letter-hyphen-something nicknames?

  20. as long as we dont give him a stupid nickname like “Joba”. what the hell is a joba? that has to be the stupidest nickname I’ve ever heard. I’ve never even heard an explanation.

  21. shannon says:

I like calling him “3-2 Murph”

  22. HarryDoyle says:

    It’s Murph-Dawg end of story!

  23. iamatwork says:

That’s a pretty horrible nickname. That’s the kind of thing Philly fans would call him.

  24. Arsenal13 says:

    It’s the Irish Hammer
