Opinion: I Still Believe, You Should Too
By Mike Nichols - Sep 22, 2008 5:54 pm

Tonight the Mets will begin their final homestand of the regular season, with four games against the National League Central champion Cubs, followed by three games against the Marlins.

David Wright, speaking to reporters following yesterday’s loss to the Braves, said:

“We’re still in control of getting into the playoffs the last seven games, and that’s what you ask for…We’re going to see what we’re made of.”

Wright is, well, right. The Mets do control their own destiny, as far as the winning the Wild Card is concerned. Even if the Mets go 4-3 over their next seven games, the Brewers would need to win five over their last six to tie the Mets and force a one-game playoff.

Of course, last season the Mets controlled their own destiny as well, and promptly orchestrated the greatest collapse in baseball history, but I firmly believe this is a different team.

The tougher task lies in the Mets chances of winning the National League East. In order for the Mets to win the division, they must play two games better than the Phillies.

The Phillies play their final six games at home versus the Braves and Nationals, which the Phillies are a combined 22-8 against this season.

With that said, I still believe in this team, and you should too. Yes, the bullpen is horrific and the offense is spotty late in games, but this is no time to abandon this team or be negative.

We are Mets fans, dammit! We’re not front runners. We’re a collection of hopeful believers that loves our team until the very end, regardless of how joyful or brutal the outcome.

This team needs our support and we should all give it, with no strings attached.

If you will be at the games this week, I urge you to refrain from booing and cheer this time with everything you have. You don’t need to bring anything more than your loud voice and your heart.

As the late great Tug McGraw told Mets fans in 1973, ‘Ya Gotta Believe!’

    deja vu

      I believe!!!

      I believe…
      – Reyes can turn a double into triple like nobody else.
      – Santana, Pelfrey, Perez, and Niese can shut down any team.
      – Beltran, Wright, Murphy can mash a double at critical moments.

      I believe…
      - Delgado is juicing again but who cares! He’ll hit several more long balls before this season is over.
      – Reyes and Castillo and A Reyes can turn a double as well as any tandem.
      – Church, Beltran, and Chavez have the outfield covered tight.

      I believe…
      - Schneider can pull the bullpen together, call a better game than the best.
      - Smith is unhittable when he’s on point
      - Pedro is athlete who excels under pressure. He has the grit and craft to become a pitcher renewed.
      - Feliciano is unhittable by lefties and Scho by Righties, and we need to remember who they carried the team from April thru June.
      - I believe Parnell and Maine will step up if given the chance

  3. metsmad22 says:

see it really IS the same team though……outside of Johan, Murph, Church, Schneider, Stokes and Ayala, it is the exact same team minus glavine and loduca. Were glavine and loduca the reason for the collapse? is that where this great change of this team came from? the team WAS different, from early July till September. They were a dominating team, with that magic, and they were happy. but that team disappeared again, and it’s bad mets circa late 2007 early 2008.

  4. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

it wouldve been great if wright actually said “ya gotta believe”

  5. dazedandconfused says:

Maybe this team is different but they still blew a 3.5 game lead in a week and are now back 1.5 games for the division. Even though they’ll walk away with the WC they still blew the division 2 years in the row and the celebration for the WC will not taste as good as the division. Especially when your playing the Cubs at Wrigley in the first round!

    • ridethesnake says:

They did not blow anything yet. The Phillies were 3.5 back a week ago after being 7.5 up — they didn’t blow anything either. It is not over yet. Stop being such fatalists.

      • kingman 26 says:

Thank you RTS for this breath of fresh air.

We totally control our destiny and have blown nothing at this point.

  6. Dmak says:

I believed last year, now i just expect the worst…

    • darknova says:

Exactly, it’s become very hard to be positive as a Mets fan. I’ve been a fan of the team since 1991, but the past two years have been the most excruciating.

  7. RobGoBlue says:

Technically, believing that they’re going to choke again is still believing…

  8. SantanaCYYOung says:

last year from 17 to play to this point (7 games left to play) the mets lost 4 games to the phillies in the standings,

this year, so far, they have lost 5 games to the phillies in the standings

excuse me if am not optimistic

    • ridethesnake says:

Last year from 17 to play they lost 4.5 games in 4 games (Phils played an extra game), so with 13 left they were only 3.5 up.

  9. MetsFan4Decades says:

Well said, Matt – well said. I’m onboard. I’ll be here until the bitter end.

  10. altru426 says:

    LET’S GO METS

every year is different, the outcome is TBD, let’s hope we can pull it together and get it done these last seven games

  11. ridethesnake says:

Wild card is fine with me. No one will care next Tuesday, no one. Honestly, I’d rather be 2 games out of the division on Saturday and three up on the wild card and be able to pitch Johan game one, than have a chance at the division Sunday. Yes, I’d prefer the home field but it won’t matter all that much in the end.

That said, I think if the Mets go 5-2 they win the division, so let’s go get it. If you are going tonight, PLEASE don’t boo — I truly believe a lot of the bullpen issue is a confidence thing and cheering could wake them up.

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

5-2? wow, i wish i shared your optimism, i really do

      • ridethesnake says:

I’m not sure where I said I thought they would go 5-2, I just said I thought that would win the division. Basically I predicted 3-3 for the Phils.

        • SantanaCYYOung says:

“That said, I think if the Mets go 5-2 they win the division.”

        • ridethesnake says:

Are you serious? Re-read the statement. I am saying if they go 5-2 they win the division. If they go 4-3 they don’t. I’m not predicting either. Only that the Phils will go 3-3.

    • kingman 26 says:

Agree again RTS, and let us remember that of the 12 World Series teams since 2002, SEVEN have been wild cards, which includes 3 champions.

I doubt any of those teams’ fans care about whether they won the division.

  12. JoseReyesForPresident says:

I BELIEVE theres no doubt about that ,The question is do they BELIEVE in themselves…

  13. Darth Manuel says:

I’m so tired of this “Ya Gotta Believe” business. Love the slogan when my team is gritty and capable of coming back.. Hate when it refers to this mets team.. They don’t believe.. So how can we?

    • darkstar73 says:

mets fans are losers, bottom line, had to say it.

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

      OK, two things.

First is that I have to say, reluctantly, that I agree with much of this. The thing about the “ya gotta believe” mantra is that it was uttered about a different kind of team. The Mets team we were asked to believe in back then was one that was winning games they “shouldn’t” win. They were young and scrappy and people were saying “no way this team keeps doing this, it’s just a matter of time before they sink back to their proper level.”

This, unfortunately, is the exact opposite of what we’re dealing with here. This is a team that is playing below expectations.

When a team wins beyond all reason, when it’s ao that kind of a tear, belief is a powerful psychological tool, not to mention a little easier to come by.

On the other hand, when a team keeps “rewarding” those who believe in it with subpar performance and keeps doing less than expected… well, belief is a pretty hard thing to come by.

Momentum and faith tend to go hand in hand, I think.

Now… having said that… of course I support my team. Of course I will cheer and not boo, and I will not irrationally call for the heads of everyone in the clubhouse, the front office, and every member of the Wilpon family, because even if it’s appropriate (which I kind of think it isn’t), in the end, it’s counterproductive. Firing people may satisfy our sense of vengence, but it will not make this team win. The people on this team playing better — THAT will make this team win.

So yeah, I’m supporting my team, but faith — given recent results, that seems a bit much to ask for. Or at least it does when members of the team itself don’t always seem to have it. Because Darth Manuel is right about that, too — what we do it at this point is secondary — the belief has to come from the inside.

      • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

        pardon the spelling gaffes

“ao that kind of tear” = “on that kind of tear”
“what we do it at this point” = “what we do at this point”

See, I’m so beside myself I can’t even type anymore.

  14. Airfeet says:

I will believe until we make it or we dont make it…but if this team doesnt make hte playoffs…it’ll be the biggest joke ive ever seen in a sports team…

  15. Darth Manuel says:

I haven’t seen Jerry try and fire up his team in months.. Have no clue whats going on behind closed doors but a little on the field emotion… couldn’t hurt..

  16. Airfeet says:

Its also just sad that once again the wild card and the mets will come down who is capable of losing less games….rather than who can win games to get in

  17. MetsFan1976 says:

Barring a 2007 Rockies-like run by the Brew Crew, the Mets only need to play 1 game better than Philly the rest of the way. They are only 1 back in the loss column and, if they are tied with Philly in the end, and both teams would make the playoffs (that’s where the Brewers not going on a major hot streak comes in), then the Mets would win the division by virtue of having won the season series with Philly.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Oh, and as far as believing…I am cautiously optimistic. I’d love to be more optimistic than that, but I just can’t muster it after last year’s disappointment.

  18. Airfeet says:

WE ALSO know what what tomorrow’s quote by david wright is going to be….”we’re dead even right now in the wild card….this is what makes a playoff race so exciting…all we have to do is win games and im confident we can win games and control our destiny”

  19. metsguy11 says:

Well put… We have to unite in times of struggle.
    Go Mets!

“Empires and Dynasties fall. Long Live The Mets”

  20. effectivelywild says:

As I said in an earlier thread there are about 20 teams whose fan bases would gladly trade places with us right now including the Yankees. I want this division as bad as anybody but we still control our own destiny for a playoff spot. Let’s Go Mets!

  21. metsmad22 says:

how bout the mets win the next 7 games? that’d be nice…..

  22. zen says:

why wouldn’t a mets fan believe? they’re playing well and have a nice lead in the wild card.

    this year isn’t last year.

  23. darknova says:

Tonight’s a big game for Niese. Hope he can come through. Kinda reminds me of that huge Game 1 start Maine had against the Dodgers in ‘06. Wish I could be down in The City to cheer him on.

  24. swirlywand says:

I know the METS aren’t reading our whining, complaining, wishing and hoping…but I read METSBLOG because I want to think that METS fans are believing…I can read CR*P about the METS on every other blog on the planet…I can read the Post, Daily News, ESPN, MLB.com, Fox Sports, etc etc etc if I want to read how awful the METS are, and how they are on the verge of a collapse…Am I one of only a handful of people who are trying to WILL THE METS TO VICTORY!? IF you feel negative about the team, that’s totally understandable, but if we freak out….then we can’t complain when the mets freak out :-) I was hoping to read an entire comment section filled with “I BELIEVE” and “LET’S DO IT”…**sigh**

  25. danthemanmurphy says:

well said mike, i’m with ya.

  26. therealsince86 says:

Maybe the best post of the year. Great job.

  27. Airfeet says:

I mean we can all be positive for the rest of the season…and if hte mets dont make the palyoffs then we can rip the heck out of team

  28. Airfeet says:

I am a lil scared about Niese tonight though

  29. Lets_Go_Mets says:

‘Ya Gotta Believe’ didn’t work in 1973 and it’s definitely not going to work this year. I like ‘Just Win, Baby’ better, anyway.

  30. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

To win the east, we only have to play one game better then the Phillies the rest of the year. We have the tiebreaker against them unless Milwaukee is tied with everyone…

  31. koosman says:

Fellow Met fans, you gotta bereave.
