postGame: Cubs 9 Mets 5
By Regis Courtemanche - Sep 22, 2008 10:30 pm

The Mets (86–70) lost to the Cubs (95-60) by the score of 9 to 5 at Shea tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, and stats, click here.

Jason Marquis had 5 RBI, ’nuff said.

In the second, Carlos Delgado scored on a wild pitch by Marquis.  Then, in the third, Daniel “D-Rex” Murphy drove in Jose Reyes on a well hit ball to left to make it 2-1, but that was the last time the Mets had the lead.

Jon Niese lasted just 3 innings.  He had a hard time locating his pitches tonight, and unfortunately the Cubs did not.  In the fourth, Reed Johnson, who looks like a skinny version of Paul LoDuca, had his second RBI off of the youngster. Later, Jason Marquis…the pitcher…hit a grand slam to send Niese to the bench.  Derrek Lee also hit a solo shot off of Nelson Figueroa in the frame.

Gary Cohen pointed out that the Mets haven’t come back to win a game after trailing by three runs yet this season. Wow.

David Wright hit a two-run homer into the visitors bullpen in the seventh, and that was all for Marquis.  The Mets had a chance to tack on, but Ryan Church popped out to short to end the threat.

Really not much else to say other than sleep it off, get out there tomorrow, and win.

Johan Santana (14-7) faces off against Sean Marshall (3-4) tomorrow at 7:10 p.m.

    Omar,

Please get this bum Castillo off the team tonight.

    Thanks.

  2. Fiya Minaya says:

Wilpon: Please get rid of the clown General Manager.

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

Please sell the team back to Doubleday.

      • jimyager says:

PLEASE END IT NOW !!! Dont tease us and then break our hearts in the playoffs. We dont have enough to go deep so lets not go at all.. I want to see the CUBBIES win it all. Lets dump the whole pen during the off season and start fresh. We need a closer, a team with no closer is like a car with only three tires. I have no faith that this team can hold a game or win a game after the 7th.

  3. lil pelf says:

can we please just call him daniel murphy. that nickname is pretty bad.

  4. LIMetfan74 says:

    BYE! BYE! Division

Next stop Bye Bye Wild Card!

    Pathetic!!!

  5. NY Cuban says:

    CAN YOU SWING THE BAT?!?!

  6. X-Man says:

Hate them all you want. Call them stupid names all you want. But the real clas*s of the NL East is the Phillies. That team knows how to win in September.

  7. uppertank says:

castillo took 3 strikes in the bottom of the 9th. is this guy serious?
does he have any goals other than to try to get a walk?
if he’s not going to swing the bat then sit down and rest that wounded.

    • FlightFromHouston says:

there’s a saying, he doesn’t want to swing…b/c he sux!!!!!!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Funny how Luis is one of the toughest players in the league to strike out until critical games for the Mets. Same thing happened last year.

      • egnirc says:

I can’t stand when they make that comment over and over. He doesn’t strike out as much cause he is always grounding out, grounding into a DP, or causing outs in other ways.

3 more years of this bum.

      • Chuck_Nice says:

Im probably wrong here, and hope that i am, but that at bat was so horrendous the first thing that crossed my mind was luis was giving the fans a big F you for cheering when he got hit

  8. Arsenal13 says:

It’s the Irish Hammer first of all.

Second that made my decision easier not to attend another game this season i won’t give them another penny of my money this year

  9. X-Man says:

that Castillo AB is all you’ll ever need to know about this guy. He has realized that he can no longer hit and has decided to go up to the plate and try to get walk EVERY SINGLE TIME. Totallly worthless as a hitter, and the longer Manuel keeps putting this bum in the line-up, the more respect I lose for hom as a manager.

  10. metsmad22 says:

the phillies are a team whose whole is much greater than the sum of the mets parts.

  11. dykstraw says:

    JERRY’S CONFIDENT

    NO WORRIES GUYS

SCRATCHING AND CLAWING my eyes out

  12. metsfan42793 says:

WOW JERRY U BOZO HOW CAN U SAY U HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THIS TEAM. THIS TEAM STINKS YOU STINK AND CASTILLO STINKS. STOP BEING LAID BACK AND CALL PEOPLE OUT

  13. ucmetsfan says:

Gary Cohen pointed out that the Mets haven’t come back to win a game after trailing by three runs yet this season. Wow.

Mets beat Reds after trailing 5-2 in the 6th

  14. metsmad22 says:

i have a tivo of me on mike and the mad dog from may saying luis castillo is a worse problem than delgado, alou, and pedro. he of course, told me i’m an idiot.

mets record with castillo is going further and further under .500.

  15. ditas says:

this is ok, all the stuff this team is going through is going to make the champagne taste even sweeter when they clinch. haha deja vu, i love it. did you guys notice santana and chavez laughing it up on the bench while the team was losing. i bet you would never see players on the phillies bench act that way while they are losing the division, oh hold on, they are the phillies, they win games when it counts.

santana better go out and pitch a shutout tomorrow or its season over my friends. the brewers will sweep the pirates and they will not be facing either harden nor zambrano this weekend.

  16. FlightFromHouston says:

LOL … they keep deleting posts that say FIRE OMAR

  17. miker94 says:

i’m a little surprised and a little bothered by the fact that Matt never says anything negative about crapillo, especially tonight. i mean, he was the consumate rally killer tonight. either way, it’s been said a million times, if crapillo is our 2nd basemen, the season is over, period!

    • X-Man says:

Plain and simple Miker94. What amazes me is that Manuel can’t come to that conclusion all on his own?

      • sherlockcollector says:

I believe that since A. Reyes has not hit Jerry was told to play Castillo. The Mets have had a lot of injuries this year and it has cost them dearly but Omar has not done a good job, especially with the pitching. As much as I dislike Heilman they should have considered him a starter long ago. No they insisted he was a reliever when mentally and physically he wasn’t. Omar is always looking to find a gem in players that other teams have given up on and other than Tatis none of these other guys, especially pitchers have done anything. Other teams are not stupid and they usually don’t discard players that are good. I know that Gotay hasn’t done much for the Braves but it’s because he almost entirely pinch hit and watch now Anderson Hernandez will realize his potential. I just think the Wilpon’s better wake up and get rid of Omar and probably Bernazard as well.

        • cver says:

Nice post otherwise, but to be fair, Omar did find a diamond in the rough named John Maine, even though he was a bit of a prospect, so maybe he doesn’t count.

  18. mdemaio says:

I know there are plenty of reasons other than Castillo that they lost tonight, but you can smell the fear in his at-bats, and that’s contagious. He looks to draw a walk because he knows that’s the only way he can contribute to the offense. He needs to be on the bench now, and to not be on the roster if they make the playoffs. Easley in a wheelchair is a better hitter than Castillo, and at least A Reyes doesn’t hurt you in the field.

    • dykstraw says:

castillo contributes nothing to a playoff caliber baseball team

i deserve $6M from omar just as much as he does

      • number15 says:

you probably deserve it more because at least you won’t be a waste of a playoff roster spot… but at this rate we won’t even have to worry about our playoff roster

  19. metsmad22 says:

btw, given church’s concussions, i would consider trading him to the giants for randy winn, keeping murph in LF, and signing orlando hudson.

    reyes
    hudson
    wright
    delgado
    beltran
    winn
    murphey
    catcher

    • egnirc says:

um nope. Don’t you realize Winn would probably break down worse than Castillo once he put on a Mets uniform.

    • metsmad22 says:

and yet omar will put murph at 2B, and risk messing with his mind in a much more difficult position, and sign Raul Ibanez b/c he is latin and good friends with beltran.

    • methead says:

      dumb

    • Parvis says:

WOOOW another genious, Randy Winn……LOL what a joke…Trade Church for Winn, Dam I wish you were the GM, maybe you can be EXEC of the year and Trade Jose Reyes for a stud like Ronnie Belliard then you can Put SLAPPY at SS for the next 3yrs and Start Ronnie at 2nd(which fills the hole) and lead off Slappy followed by belliard!!!

What do you think? Your a waste …..Go stick your head in Randy Winns HOLE>>>>you Jerk

  20. DWright31 says:

    What’s the tragic number count?

  21. LL says:

Castillo, head back to the DR you sorry bitsch!!! and go eat a fat one you sorry piece of shiite

  22. Furioso says:

Really not much else to say other than sleep it off, get out there tomorrow, and win

    Really? Some interesting topics:

    1) Why they decided to pitch Niese against the Cubs instead of ATL, and how are they going to replace him on Sat? Because he cannot possibly start

    2) How about the Mets lack of offense against the great Marquis? Nothing to kill rallies like DPs when you have 2 on nobody out

    3) Parnell do enough to earn use in more important spots tonight?

    4) How the Mets lack of organizational depth is murdering them for a 2nd straight season down the stretch?

    “Sleep it off”

I’m sure THEY will. I wonder how the majority of this teams fans will sleep

    • methead says:

organizational depth? You kidding right? You could have made that point 1 month ago but they brought up Muprhy, stokes, Tatis, Evans….Depth is not the problem. Pitching is and its lacking across all teams. Problem is Jerry wants to continue to ring out these losers – Sho and heilman.

    • sherlockcollector says:

I swear I would consider trading everyone on this team except for Wright, Santana, Murphy and Parnell. You’re correct, no depth to the organization, constantly poor decisions on trades, constantly relying on older guys past their prime. They are going to have to trade some guys like Church, Castro, Schneider, Maine to bring some new guys in.

  23. ryanyhc says:

this team has no desire to play in october, they want to go home and hang out.

  24. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I think it was said that the biggest start of Santana’s career as a Met was game 3 of that Philly series earlier this month. Then it was said that the last Nats game was his biggest start. Well, guess what? Tomorrow night just became his biggest start.

  25. FlightFromHouston says:

what’s the point of even making the playoffs ??

    • stickguy says:

gotta be in it to win it.

And histroy has proven that teams can do a 180 when the playoffs start. Both ways too. great teams get smoked, and teams that stagger in get hot.

so th epoint is to get in and see what happens.

      • FlightFromHouston says:

you actually think Sanchez and heilman and Smith and Ayala are capable of getting outs in the post season? It’s physically impossible,

  26. X-Man says:

told my co-worker who is a Yankee fan back when Castillo was due to come off the DL in two days, I told him as soon as Castillo comes back to the team, the Mets would revert to their losing ways. And sure enough………………………..the numbers speak for themselves. I know it’s not logical and it goes against my “baseball Wisdom”…………………but I am convinced of this as many of you are on here.

  27. Eddie says:

i’ve tried to stay positive through all of this but im pretty sure we arent making the playoffs, while we we’re playing the cubs who obviously arent rolling over for us, the brewers are playing the pirates so basically its all over but the crying

    • Central NJ Mets fan says:

The Marlins won’t roll over for us this weekend, if we’re still in it by then. This team needs a major makeover next year.

  28. FlightFromHouston says:

I love sny and metsblog.com… but I don’t particularly think omar minaya should keep his jon… with all due respect … there’s nothing more to say

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

But yet you keep on saying it. Over and over and over. I think we all know how you feel about him by now.
      Just saying…..

  29. LL says:

I can’t stand you Castillo, go eat a fat one!!!

  30. Furioso says:

    This team needs Aaron Rowand.

Overrated maybe but a real hardcase player. We need that type here

    • therealsince86 says:

I agree he would not be a bad pickup and the Giants would unload him. Slot him in left and Murphy at 2nd.

    • Sylar says:

No, what we need is Brad Lidge.

If this team had the Phillies bullpen, we’d have won over a 100 games already easily.

      • therealsince86 says:

What we need is Krod then.
Krod, Ayala, Stokes, Parnell, Smith, Feliciano/Show replacement and a long man.

      • Furioso says:

We didn’t have the chips to deal for Lidge. just look at the haul the Stros got for him! /sarcasm

    • Fregosi says:

This team needs arms in the bullpen first. Unless Rowand can pitch he can’t help us!

  31. FlightFromHouston says:

when is omar going to make a public statement?

    • kingman 26 says:

At the latest possible point he can get away with apparently!

      • FlightFromHouston says:

he’s worse than sarah palin in ducking the media… and yet no one in the media, save for adam rubin in the wake of the randolph firing months ago, ever calls him out.

        • therealsince86 says:

Here we go with the politics again. Hello can we get a delete please?

        • therealsince86 says:

Well evidently Metsblog is part of the leftwing media as well. I guess I might as well get used to it. LOL.

          • nyj0126 says:

yes you’re screwed there lol being against it is like being a mets fan in the nl east. or being a jets fan in new york right now. at least i’m 1 for 3 lol hopefully you like the giants

        • therealsince86 says:

I do as much as I like any NFL team.
At least as I said before it was deleted on the otherside at least the Republicans don’t choke like the Democrats in September so I have that going for me.

    • methead says:

about? The fact that professional pitchers can’t get outs? That Sho who is here to get lefties out can’t get one in a big spot? Wright can’t get a clutch hit? Mets turn if off when down by 3 runs?

You guys kill me with the Omar firing. Its just plain stupid. The anger should be directed to the losers in the pen. They are the cancer. How can any team continue to hit when they KNOW the bullpen will blow it? It becomes pychological (however you spell that) when you are down by 3 and you have to battle back to know your bullpen will give up another 3.

Jerry should be using stokes, ayalas, rincon, smith and parnell. Then Felciano…then the other bums. They should be last options. Jerry wont do it.

      • FlightFromHouston says:

you’re right… GMs should not be held accountable for failing to evaluate talent

        • dave27 says:

Um buddy…he is accountable…to his BOSSES. Not to “flightfromhouston” on metsblog.

Please though, if you were his speechwriter, what would you think an appropriate statement from Omar would be?

      • egnirc says:

Omar signed them, so the players failures are his problem and should cost him his job.

    • dave27 says:

      A public statement? On what?

      Are you serious?

    • sherlockcollector says:

He’s going to say that when Maine , Wagner, Tatis and Easley got hurt that’s what cost the Mets. Certainly that didn’t help but he put together this team of old men and for the second straight year they collapsed. And Pelfrey looks tired and the bullpen pitches every single day. God this team and this organization is a mess and Omar is the one most responsible.

  32. LL says:

It doesn’t even hurt anymore. I’m just numb.

  33. Mex_17 says:

My prediction for tomorrow is Johan gives up a run in the 1st inning, and the Mets can’t get a run across. 1-0 Cubs.

    • Central NJ Mets fan says:

What would have been wrong with starting Santana, Perez & Pelfry on 3 days rest in the last and most crucial week of the season? Charlie Manuel did it with Myers & Moyer and it worked for him. How about thinking out of the box? Drastic times call for drastic measures.

  34. Furioso says:

If you go to a game next year, you’re a maroon.

Why the rush to see Ebbets Field v. 2? It will be there for the next 50 or so years. Maybe they’ll field a good team one year and youc an see the stadium then

  35. metsmad22 says:

we need a bullpen and we need some new veteran leadership…….cliff floyd is still missed.

  36. methead says:

worse part guys? Next year the True met fans that buy the packages (sat, Sun etc) wont even get offered a chance to buy.

    • dave27 says:

Actually it’s all but confirmed we will. I don’t know who you think is buying 45,000 seats before plan holders get access.

  37. Furioso says:

Can someone ask Matt when he changes the name of the site to ChokeBlog?

    Oh, I’m sorry:

Matt Cerone’s ChokeBlog Sponsored by Geico!

  38. Fregosi says:

Enough about shoulda dealt for Lidge. Everyone on this busted Philly’s FO last year for trading for him. Admit it, everyone thought he was washed up, a bust. Beside we had Wagner.

    • egnirc says:

The same people who said Lidge would be a bust are the same who have claimed that the Phillies Pen and Starters would implode… and it looks like they are wrong again for a second season in a row.

Just like the “Castillo is a hard strike out” “The Phillies pen is due to implode” is two year old joke already.

  39. Mex_17 says:

In all seriousness, how could any rational person want Omar back as GM next year?

Why is there never any talk about firing this guy? He’s the Teflon GM.

  40. mylegshurt says:

“Toughness” is the ability to own the situation and dictate to the other guy what is going to happen. The Phillies know how to do this — if they lose, it’s because they failed to execute, not because the other guy got into their heads.

By contrast, it is very easy to get into the heads of these Mets, and everyone knows it. They are soft because there is too much entitlement (think about it — how many times has a Mets player been benched for poor play?) and no signal from ownership or Omar that underperforming has any meaningful consequences other than bad press (this is why bringing Willie back was such a big mistake).

Ultimately, however, weakness starts at the top. Like, for example, Omar’s comedic handling of Willie’s firing and his refusal to challenge Reyes, Beltran et al. to stop feeling sorry for themselves and find a pair. Or Tony B’s snakelike behavior behind the manager’s back. The Wilpons apparently are don’t get it — both will be back, effectively telling the players, again, that complete failure is no big deal.

When no one’s in charge, everybody’s in charge. Hence, your 2008 New York Mets.

    • Mex_17 says:

      Agree 100% !!!

A fish rots from its head.

    • kingman 26 says:

Yeah, this is a fine post…no accountability so far.

    • X-Man says:

Steve Phillips actually said these same exact words about two or three months ago on ESPN. His whole premise was that the Mets (Wilpons) have fortered this “Open Door” policy where everyone can come to anyone and voice their opinions. In theory it’s a good idea, but as Phillips pointed out, you can’t have players going around and OVER managers heads. You need to have a tighter control and much more accountability. Phillips basically said that this Mets culture of “Everyone has a right to go to the top with any concerns” has created a culture of back stabbers and no accountability. He said as long as this remains like this the Mets will NEVER reach their potential. Boy, it’s sure starting to look like Philips might have something ther.

  41. danlx13 says:

could u imagine what the mets team would be like if they has mormol and wood all yr??
we would have a better record than the cubbies have now

ps. castillo should not start any more games the rest of the year (im sure everyone felt that way)

  42. LL says:

I liked Cliff Floyd but he only had one good year for us and was always crying about being hurt and not playing day games after night games. You can keep Floyd, he’s not missed, trust me. One good year in which he was lucky enough to stay healthy, that’s it.

  43. Furioso says:

In his end of the season address, I put the over/under on Omar clutching for the “Maine and Wagner” hurt excuse like a drowning man on a life ring at 5 seconds

    • therealsince86 says:

And lets see, how much of that would be true. Come on admit it. Who started tonight and who tried to close last night?

      • Furioso says:

        1) The pen stunk regardless
        2) Lack of team depth killed them
        3) He did nothing at the deadline

        NO EXCUSES, SORRY

    • nyj0126 says:

Maine and Wagner probably would have hurt us the way they were pitching at the end… There’s no excuse. We lost last season because Guillermo was our main set up main without roids. And we’ll lose this year because our whole bullpen are Mota’s… Didn’t he cowardly hit Piazza too and run into the locker room? Yet they have much respect for Piazza? I don’t think Mike would have recommended him here as a pitcher or a person

  44. docgoodens8ball says:

Good to see Jerry has the same exact attitude as Willie had at this time last year. That ‘we’ll be fine’ attitude did wonders for this team’s psyche down the stretch last year. How could anybody root for this team in 2009 if they again miss the playoffs?

The Phillies probably won’t lose to another game this year. Looks like the Braves went back to being the Braves tonight. Maybe the Phils could just wear Met uniforms tomorrow. Better hope the Pirates put a couple good games together or this season is as good as over.

    • kingman 26 says:

Yeah, Jerry sounded a lot more like Willie tonight…

      And hilarious name!!

      • docgoodens8ball says:

Thanks, I had to change it because my posts stopped showing up under another name. That’s happened to me twice. I don’t know what it is.

  45. nyj0126 says:

So you take a Roward out of the Phillies and plug a Johan in and the Phillies are still better? Or the Mets are worse?

We’ll do it. Just take a deep breath all. Think I’m crazy. We’ll get over the hump. Johan’s on the mound the last game. He’d on the mound tomorrow. And Ollie pitches once more and potentially a second time in the event on a 163rd game.

    • nyj0126 says:

      into the Mets*

    • metsmad22 says:

jerry lost my support this month……kept going to the well wit heilman and schow…….playing castillo when we were doing great with argenis and easley…….using neise at home versus the cubs instead of in ATL against whom he had confidence. never resting jose and david as he saaid he would. overusing the bullpen. avoiding parnell/kunz/neise and messing with their rhythm……

  46. Furioso says:

Johan pitching game 162? Who pitches game 161? Niese? Figueroa? Who?

    ELIMINATED SAT

    BOOK IT

    • nyj0126 says:

Johan tomorrow against a rookie? Win. Ollie throwing the game of his life against a great club Wednesday? Win. Thursday against Pedro – probably a tight loss because the Mets offense makes it tight. Or the bullpen blows it.

Say the Brewers keep up. The Mets get it started on Friday and lose a heart breaking loss. Lose on Saturday with say Brandon Knight on the mound. Probably a better option than the other two. Than we win on Sunday with the Johan on the mound. Brew Crew goes 3-3. We get in.

      • docgoodens8ball says:

How can you possibly throw Pedro out there in a must win situation? I don’t know but I have a feeling in Pedro is given the ball in a must-win game we’re going to see Tom Glavine, game 162 all over again.

While we didn’t choke away as many games this year, the way this one is shaking out seems almost identical to last season. Fortunately we are being chased by the Brewers and not the Philies. At least with the way the Brewers have been playing there is a good chance they may blow it.

        • rosemarymets says:

hate to say it but i think the brewers are going to start winning now that they realize that they can still get in even with their last 2 horrid weeks…i think bobby cox is smiling from ear to ear and i am just numb…

  47. altru426 says:

anyone ever see the movie “north” with elijah wood? came out in ‘94…in one scene when he is seeing new parents in alaska or something, they send the elders off on a piece of ice to live out their remaining days…

i think the mets should send castillo and the bullpen out on a piece of ice…what do you think?

    • nyj0126 says:

They should send him down to the Jersey shore buy him one of those big red beanball chairs… He won’t get up off of that lol He’s too old.

You want to trade Luis Castillo to Alaska? Why so we can get Palin in the Northeast Corridor? lol No thanks. That wasn’t political. Relax… lol

  48. nyj0126 says:

The Phillies don’t matter anymore. There’s no way they’ll even lose 2 out of their remaining 6. And even if they do, there’s no way the Mets will win 6. That doesn’t matter. Now what matters is the wild card. Something we still amazingly have the lead in.

If the Mets make the playoffs, we’ll all be in joy. If they don’t, we’ll all be miserable. What ever the result may be, we’ll have to live with it. Just another thing in life. Just a game. Lose 3 1/2 with 17 to go and a 2 1/2 Wild Card lead with 7 to go. Maybe we can pray back the 02-04 Mets era so we don’t have to go through this again.

  49. Castillo’s last AB:
    3 pitches
    0 swings

Is it possible he purposely struck out as a big eff you to the fans??

    • nyj0126 says:

Maybe. He should speak with the Tony Soprano and say it so we’re convinced he did lol

    • Furioso says:

He better watch his back if that’s true….his teammates will get him

    • 1985Mets says:

I truly feel that Castillo did not swing to make a point.

I have family members that work at the stadium and they have lots of good stories. Specially about Castillo.

This guy does not want to PLAY here. He wants out. The alienates him self from the rest of the team. This guy is just a BAD SEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just read something about former Mets pitcher Geremi Gonzalez getting struck by lightning and dying like a year ago. That is one of the most unfortunate and sad things you’ll here about a guy his age, but isn’t it crazy to? To a Mets pitcher who was traded to the Brewers? How rare is it to get struck by lightning? How rare is it to choke like this 2 years in a row? Maybe not so rare after all. Who knows.

    • kingman 26 says:

Yeah, he got hit by lightning on a beach in Venezuela last spring….there is definitely something spooky and horrible going on.

The curse of trading Scott Kazmir? Just a thought…..

      • nyj0126 says:

We got good after we traded Kazmir lol The three previous years were some of the worse of the franchise. Tony Torasco smoking? Mo Vaughn’s made a bigger impact in New York kicking people out of lower income buildings in Brooklyn and turning them into 2K a month apartments… And Art Howe was the manager.

But maybe… I don’t know. I think losing John Franco hurt a little bit. I would have liked to see him been a coach on this team. I’d say it’s the curse of the 17. That’s when the momentum shifted from like a hot month to a cold weekend-mediocre weekday strategy.

Weren’t the Mets like 21-9 in their previous 30 to that point? And now what are they? 4-7… It’s the 17. They should have retired Keith’s number.

      • nyj0126 says:

Just to put the icing on the cake, we acquired Mike Adams in the trade for him. He’s turned out to be a solid reliever. What’d we do? Waive him? Wheeler for Hidalgo? Like two or three hot weeks? We traded Heath Bell and Matt Lindstrom while we were at it. And we never went through with making Chan Ho Park into a reliever like we should have…

    • gomets6091 says:

wow, comparing the Mets playing poorly to a guy dying. That’s a little overboard, don’t you think?

      • nyj0126 says:

It happens to an ex-Met who was traded for a really good set up man, so it kind of has to make you think… How do you die of that though? How rare is that? Why would you be on a beach when there’s lightning around? I don’t know… I wouldn’t compare such because it’s a horrible thing that happened. What makes it spooky is I barely heard anything about it. You usually hear about that kind of thing.

  51. grotesmask says:

I told my friends that our backs were against the wall going into tonight’s game. Now we’ve had our heads smacked up against it.

One of two scenarios to be realistic:

Win the next 6 GD games, or make sure we win 5/6. That’s really it.

I compare this Mets team to 73, 99, 2000, but there just missing that total gamer approach, that scratching and clawing…that essence that shows you fight for each pitch and at bat. I so want to be proven wrong.

    UGH!

    • gomets6091 says:

well, my first post got swallowed thanks to the fascists that block spam on this site, but the gist was that the Mets bullpen over the last 2 years has really done a fantastic job of killing the “Ya Gotta Believe” spirit of the majority of Mets fans. It feels like there’s no magic left at Shea, unfortunately.

    • docgoodens8ball says:

No way we are winning 5 of 6.

      • nyj0126 says:

No, but maybe 3 out of 6. The Brewers taking 4 out 6? Doubt it. Maybe 2 of 3 from Pitts and 1 of 3 from the Cubs. The Mets have to take 2 out of 3 here and aim for the same with the Fish.

    • f.e says:

you forgot something maybe milwalkee will lose the next six
      not!!!!
its over beleive what you want but in the end its still the same mets from the begining of the year
just remember one thing next year will be worse if big shake ups dont happen in the off season

      • nyj0126 says:

Relax… It’s not over. In six days, I promise you can say what ever you want if we aren’t there. Major shake ups won’t change it. We got bad luck. Even if Johan, Ollie and Pelf were the pen… We’d still lose games in the crunch. There’s just something wrong with the team. It’s a fear. A mental issue. They’ll get over it.

  52. nyj0126 says:

They’re going to bounce back tomorrow. They’ve done it so many times. What like 10 times?

The Mets are what you call – the week showers. The weekend sleepers. Just think about it. Last time last week we were complaining how the Mets loss 3 out of 4 to the Nats and Braves. Than they give us 3 wins in a row. Mix that in with a Phillies loss on Friday.

What about the week before? Won two dramatic high scoring games against the Nats. Than on the weekend, the split a DH to the Braves and loss Sunday. Both losses being blown saves.

Give us one more 3 game win streak Mets. Please. The Brewers may win 2. But we’ll be up 2 with 3 to go. Than you can go back and win like one. We don’t care how pretty it is. Just get us in and give us a reason to come back and watch you next season.

    • f.e says:

      your on crack

    • docgoodens8ball says:

Like I said earlier, the only difference in this season is tat we are being chased by the Brewers, not the Phils. At least there is an outside chance that Milwaukee may not win their games. The Phils probably won’t lose again.

    • metsmad22 says:

that version of the mets, the one that came back after falling down, died the day castillo came back….

      • nyj0126 says:

Than something is wrong with Jerry Manuel. Maybe they should borrow Carlos Delgado’s notebook and jot down something important… Argenis isn’t so bad in my book.

      • Sylar says:

        6-4 EI loss to Astros

        8-1 win (CG Pelfrey)

        7 run debacle in Philly

        Comeback against Philly bullpen

        The Heilman walkfest in Florida

        Beatdown of Scott Olse

        Domination by Moyer

        Delgado abusing Hamels

        Perez and Lannan domination

The Dark Knight and Ace create a split

All of that occured after Castillo came back

  53. deotriniplaya says:

Is there n e one out there that can get the record for the mets when castillo is in the lineup opposed to when hes not, also since he joined the team last year, i truely believe this guy is a bad influence on the team. Seriously when he’s not in the lineup were a different team, we just continue to give at bats away with him, and what happened to manuel rewarding players that are doing good, put “drex “in second and nick evans in left field.

    • metsmad22 says:

there have been many posts about this…….when he plays, the mets are many games under .500……there is not a single other player on the 25 man roster, except the pitchers, who when they play th mets are under .500.

    • nyj0126 says:

The worse thing about it is I’ve barely ever even heard him speak. And he was a really good player with the Marlins. He’s probably a nice guy. He shouldn’t be regarded this negatively in history. He did actually do well in 07′ last year though. If the Mets made the playoffs, his acquistion would have ranked among the top deadline deals. Eric Gagne on the other hand was a bust. Come on. Ruben Gotay playing second to end the year?

      • deotriniplaya says:

I would rather n e one playing second instead of castillo including Gotay its not like we was bad at all he had pop on his bat, n even if he did make a few defensive mistakes so what, at least when its came up to get a hit or n RBI i wouldn’t be already thinking “great automatic out to the the shortstop” with castillo…there is no defending him, watch his next at bat i gurantee u that ball will not leave the infield.

      • nyj0126 says:

in 08′ anyone would take anyone over luis. in 07′, maybe not. he hit over .300. he actually gained a lot of mets fans respect down the stretch even through the collapse. once the collapse finalized, people forgot about this. and he’s been tainted ever since he signed the 4 year deal, because of how painful it is to see him walk after his double knee surgery. he shouldn’t be playing. he’s a joke at this point. you can tell he’s miserable too.

        • deotriniplaya says:

he didnt over .300 as a met that was carried over from the twins, he hit .296 which isnt bad at all, just that even if he was healthy i dont like that fact that he can’t hit the ball out of the infield.

  54. wallybackman'sfire says:

    2007 Mets record in their final 17 games…. 5-12
2008 Mets record thus far in the final 17 games of the season… 4-7 (What is the Phillies record in their last 11 games? 10-1? We’ve lost 6 games in the standings to them in a week and half!!)

What a way to finish off a season Mets players. What heart you show. What toughness. You guys can’t hold the Phills jock straps. You CAN play when the pressure is off. You choke when it matters. 2 years of this…. What other fan base has gone thru this?

32 years of being a Mets fan. I’m about ready to move on and give them up. It just isn’t worth the heartache and frustration.

This team isn’t winning the wild-card.

  56. MetfaninFL says:

This was a terrible loss but lets have some perspective here. If you told me the day after we fired Willie that we would have a 1 game lead on a playoff spot with 6 to go I would have taken it on the spot. I will be disappointed if we don’t make the playoffs but I would rather have this than be wondering about the off season already. Some other points. Niese just didn’t have it tonight. I know he gave up a GS to a SP but how many of us were screaming at the TV “just throw a strike, its the friggin pitcher up there”. He unlike other Mets pitchers (I’m looking at you Aaron Heilman) at least manned up and threw a strike. Also tomorrow someone not named Luis Castillo better be starting at 2B. You can give me numbers til the cows come home that Reyes is no better but the bottom line is for whatever reason we win when Castillo plays. I realize the division is gone after tonight but I just want to be in the playoffs. Lets Go Mets

    • nyj0126 says:

Exactly. Pelfrey should have thrown tonight though. Put the good up against the good. And put Niese up against the guys who he done well again. Now they’ll we forced to throw Brandon Knight or sadly possible Jon Niese in between Pelf and Johan on Saturday. Irresponsible coaching. And there was no reason for Ayala to pitch tonight with how we’ll need him in the last 6 and the minor groin problems.

  57. Clutch says:

Explain to me how….How the hell does the same thing happen??…yes I know baseball can chew you up and spit you out but this is just rediculous…..if this happens again, I am burning all my Mets gear and never buying anything Mets related again

    • 1985Mets says:

How long have you been a METS fan may i ask?

    • metsmad22 says:

same team…..why would u expect different results.

    • nyj0126 says:

How does Geremi Gonzalez get struck by lightning on a beach? Isn’t that like 1 out of thousands and possibly hundreds of thousands of chances… The kind of thing you’d here a reference to in a Science text book.

Bad luck. That’s all… The tides can turn if they get the grip. It’s not like this team isn’t capable. It’s not like we aren’t scoring. It’s the bullpen.

You’ve got to be creative. Start the pen out there. Wait, no not the pen. Start Figgy. Start Knight. Start Parnell. Than bring Johan in the 3rd inning.

  58. Clutch says:

I have been a Mets fan for over 20 years but this is just too much…its just not worth it to be a Mets fan anymore…seriously…year in and year out..its the same garbage…when is enough enough?

    • f.e says:

your right I believe the mets are going to have a hard time filling the new stadium next year

      • nyj0126 says:

No they won’t. It’s New York. If the Knicks can sell tickets, anyone can. There’s so many people that live here that they’ll always be demand for a broken seat at the Garden or a roach infested apartment underneath a deli in the Bronx.

      • Sylar says:

        Somehow, I really doubt that

  59. 1985Mets says:

    Oh…. That explains it… lol

Don’t take it personal but There’s a Reason why they call us “special breed”…

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS HANG TIGHT MAN. There will be better days….

    • nyj0126 says:

I don’t lol I’ll hang on tight like being on a ride at Six Flags not being sure if the bar is down

      • nyj0126 says:

Okay, maybe the roach infested apartment wouldn’t have high demand lol Maybe compared to Philly. Too bad the Phillies have the Mets in their place in baseball terms.

  60. 1985Mets says:

JUST look at chicago, they have had it 100 times worse than us.

    • wallybackman'sfire says:

Cub fans have had it bad that is for sure. But I wonder – and I am not trying to sound sarcastic, really I am not – but did the Cubs ever blow a 7 game lead with 17 to play? Maybe they have done similar ‘feats’ ?

  61. nyj0126 says:

All of baseball knows how unique the Mets are. Even if it’s negatively. I think it’s safe to say they’ve earned that. With that being said, statistics don’t matter. Luis can’t do it. We all know it. Argenis has barely any experience, but so what.

My bigger point – start Knight tomorrow in the 1st, 2nd and possibly 3rd depending on if the pitcher gets up. Get creative. Make noise. Bring in Johan in the 3rd. Hope that Knight doesn’t give up more than a run and if he does bring in Johan anyway as the back up plan. What, like Feliciano or Sanchez wouldn’t have done that in the 8th?

    • MetfaninFL says:

We gave up 4 prized prospects, over $100 millon, we just came off a terrible loss, and you want to start…… Brandon Knight? Maybe if its August we try to reinvent the wheel but right now we play the game as it ought to be played. We give our best pitcher the ball in the biggest game of our season.

  62. f.e says:

Omar keeps getting credit for bringing credibility to this team
he better get the credit for bringing this curse as well

  63. nyj0126 says:

Oh, I doubt it too – but wouldn’t it be an idea worth trying? Wouldn’t it show a little charisma?

    • nyj0126 says:

I think it’s an outside the box thought. I’ve heard a little bit of it about a month ago. Than the bullpen got slightly better. But it hasn’t been mentioned since than. Instead, they’d rather keep going with the junk.

In my opinion, our spot starters – excluding Niese are better than our pen. I think Parnell can start out the first 2 innings alright and I think Johan can go 7 solid innings as I believe the same for Ollie. Six to play it safe.

  64. rigsay says:

I know this is a 2nd guess, but how badly did pitching Niese tonight hurt them.

Shoulda pitched Niese yesterday against a team he owned the start before (8 inning shutout) and give Pelfrey an extra day to rest. Say what you want, Pelfrey wouldn’t have given up a grandslam to the pitcher.

A grandslam to a lefty pitcher from a lefty. That is the Met organization in a nutshell. It wasn’t even the first time this year.

And one other thing. Lou managed this game like game 7 of the World Series pitching his core relievers.

    • f.e says:

hey the mets lead in one category
giving up grand slams to pitchers

    • fortleemets says:

Pitching a lefty, who happens to be 21 and pitching in his 3rd major league start in the final week of the season (Philip Humber, anyone?), against a team full of monster hitting righties was simply a ludicrous idea. I would have much rather had Nelson Figeuroa pitching.

      • nyj0126 says:

Who said Humber was a wise choice lol The Mets expect to get lucky too much when they got no luck at all. It’s like a guy who has everything going wrong asking out hot girls. Ask out enough and may you’ll get one to say yes… Keep going with junk pitchers and maybe you’ll get lucky once.

Just imagine if the Mets gave Lohse 1 million extra than the Cards to join our club? Imagine…

    • MetfaninFL says:

I don’t understand how we could have pitched Pelfrey rather than Niese. We haven’t had an off day since Sept. 11th. I didn’t think the Cubs would lay down but we have to exploit the fact that they clinched. Its easy to keep a SP in the game when he’s thrown under 100 pitches. If we get the pitcher on the ropes we have to make him work not GIDP twice.

    • 1985Mets says:

That is why i love this game, Gota tip my hat to him. LOU could care less if they got the DIVISION…

  65. 1985Mets says:

I really like you analysis, but again WE HAVE TO HOPE that KNIGHT FIGGY does not dismantle before the 3rd inn.

MY ADVISE, I KNOW ITS A TOUGH LOSS, LETS JUST RIDE THE WAVE MAN, Lets make the LAST year at shea at good one. REGARDLESS of what hapens.

WE have to give respect to SHEA, EVEN IF OUR GUYS CANT.

WE HAVE TO GO OUT THERE AND ROOT>>>>

    LETS GO METS!!!!!

    • nyj0126 says:

We did it last year and that Champagne was bitter sweet… No, I’m not going through the motions. I’m going to scream at the top of my lungs. I’m going to watch this as seriously as I can, but I will not go down saying this should be happening… I will watch these games because I’m a fan. Because 3 hours a night for the last 6 months and 6 months last season would have been a waste…

I want this team to do it. I know this team will do it. We all will be celebrating when this team is in… I’m not Willie, that’s how I know. This team has bounced back too many times to give up. We want competition. No Nats. No Braves. And we want Johan and Ollie on that mound.

  66. nyj0126 says:

We should expect that from Lou. He has to remain his players intensity. They haven’t clinched the best record yet. They will soon if the Mets can’t do something about it though.

A lefty-lefty grand slam to a right-handed pitcher hitting on his opposite side is truly only the Mets. It’s too much to ask for. I feel as pathetic watching this as I did believing the Knicks could win with Isiah. It was amazing how the Knicks were in so many of their games 2 years ago. No, not last year lol But they’d lose within the last 40 seconds of every game.

    • rigsay says:

They call NY fans the greatest in the world, but we root for some really pathetic teams. Either we’re stupider than they give us credit for, or really, really loyal fans

      • nyj0126 says:

It’s a mix of both lol We are dedicated fans. I can’t say the same for Yankees fans. Like half there fans have never been to New York once in their life.

Very intense fans… Some smart, some not. Smarter than Philly with a similar passion. Our luck seems to burn out a little quicker than everyone elses though.

LMAO – castillo was part of the johan package. he was re-signed and got his money and years b/c he’s johan’s boy. so thank johan…

    • metsmad22 says:

and what has bringng johan done……a team without a true ace but with an amazing bullpen and guys who can hit with RISP is a lot stronger in today’s game (see the Phillies, see the Twins, see the Angels)

  68. nyj0126 says:

Lets just all be confident with tomorrows game. We got an awesome pitcher on the mound facing a rookie. He’ll take care of business. The Brewers will lose.

Just think about what one day can do. One Mets win, one Brewers loss. There would be 5 to go and the Mets would be up 2. And Ollie, Pelf and Johan would all get to pitch again.

  69. nyj0126 says:

All of you can call it the ”magical one day.” I just can’t see the Brewers coming back being that far down. Would it even be possible for them to win 3 of 5 with 3 of them being against the Cubs? All we need to do is do what we’re supposed to do and depend on a little luck. Is it really luck though? Didn’t the Brewers lose like 8 out of 10?

  70. metsmad22 says:

heres another thing……i dont care what the players think about the fans, or if they think playing for a new york crowd stinks…..guess what:

mike piazza, keith hernandez, derek jeter, mariano rivera, jorge posada, tom seaver, doc, darryl, gary carter…….

these are great players who are the pride of NY baseball…..if you feel the fans stink, it’s likely b/c you aren’t that good at baseball…..period.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

AMEN. call me sentimental, but if you replace anyone on this team with mike piazza circa 99-2000, or mex in his prime we are not talking about another collapse.

  71. nyj0126 says:

Also, if it requires the Brewers to throw CC every other day… you know they’d do it lol What do they care? Like they’d re-sign him? Come on… They loss to the Cincinatti Reds. The Reds beat the Marlins too. Talk about a spoiler.

    • 1985Mets says:

CC will be in pin Stripe uniform next season.

      • nyj0126 says:

People said that about Johan… But you may be right. They might make the splash. He’ll probably get arm problems once he gets over there too. Or just won’t be as dominating as he was in the NL. Kind of like Randy…

  72. 1985Mets says:

I would rather BLOW a 7 game lead, THAN to blow 7 world SERIES……

I’m talking about the Cubs for those of you who dont know what im talking about

  73. nyj0126 says:

Take it easy.. too much stress this last week watching these games. I know it’ll only get worse

  74. MeesesGlokmah says:

Maybe they should turn off the scoreboard showing the other teams so that here is no scoreboard watching. Let them play without the pressure of seeing rival teams winning and adding more pressure.

My crazy recipe for success (which would never work) is:

Mets – media = more winning

I know you can’t take away the media, but even though they’re pros, I feel sometimes the pressure and expectations are too much this team to handle. That said, I know they are better than this.

Anyway, I still have faith that they can get into the playoffs. Not sure how, But I have faith they will.

    • rigsay says:

Haha, now I’ve heard it all. The Media is pressuring them too much? Maybe they should all just give back those multi million dollar contracts and go play in the independent league if that is the case….

I’d rather watch crappy athletes who try hard at this point.

    • MeesesGlokmah says:

I told you guys it was crazy. I just think that constant reminders by the media of making this year different is getting to them. I guess you could say I’m a really sympathetic (or pathetic) fan.

  75. MetFanForLife says:

I was at the game and must say that the lifeless play when there are men on is why this team underachieves. Two men on, no out in the 4th and 6th: each inning dies with double plays. I love David Wright, but honestly a two-run homer down by 6 helps his stats, but doesn’t erase the 1 for 10 with RISP the team hit tonight. I can’t help but think that the only way to the postseason is a 6 game offensive push where the bullpen becomes irrelevant.
