In case you missed it, on Sunday, Pedro Martinez told the Daily News that he is willing to pitch out of the bullpen during the playoffs.
However, as Kevin E wrote in an e-mail to me earlier today, Martinez has pitched in 19 games this season and given up 18 first inning runs.
In fact, he has allowed 28 percent of his runs in the first inning, during which the opposition is hitting .347 against him.
By the way, this is not a new discussion.
In a post to Gets by Buckner, from 2006, Don wrote about this exact-same topic.

perhaps at some point they consider heaving up his pregame throwing.
yea…It seems that he spends the first inning adjusting his breaking stuff to his fb…if he ratched up the pregame throwing, perhaps he would already have an idea on the adjustments that he needs to make
I wish Pedro “would “be willing” to be omitted from the post-season roster, if the Mets make it.
I love the guy, but he has nothing left.
Maybe he should reach out to Nelson, the little person he dragged around with him in Boston, for good luck.
I think they frown on reaching out to midget skeletons.
I heard little Nelson de la Rosa died broke as well as a fall out between himself and Pedro… however, lots of people talk and no one knows for sure.
Thsi team has got to play the way they did mid to late August… The bullpen blew then too but Jerry MAnuel did not panic as he is now… If a guy or tweo reached basem he would leave his guy in…
Too many panic moves out of the pen… Simplify… Making Smith and Show and Feliciano throw every day is not helping them…
The only one colapsing now is the bullpen. What is worse a tired pitcher that has pitched 6-7 innings of the likes of heilman, feliciano, smith stokes, etc. I say Every pitcher needs to pitch 9 innings
Great seats for Sunday’s last game at Shea. Mezzanine, Sec 4, row N. Make an offer at chogitrungpa at gmail
collapse. collapse. collapse.
um, actually, it’s called a pennant race.
i’ll give you last year, but this year isn’t a collapse.
this year the collapse happen nightly.
????
Zen is right…the DBacks collapsed this year. the Brewers are on the verge of completing a collapse. The Mets have led the division 2 weeks tops. How is this a collapse?
Collapse is when you have a 99% chance of making the playoffs and miss it.
they never had a 99% chance of making it.
That percentage stuff is nonsense…and right, it was never 99%.
Zen, redemption was in their hands and they gave that away, now they are playing for the right to not be utterly shut out of October a second year running. There is not hiding from the facts.
This is not a pennant race it is currently a wild card tread water.
I actually have confidence in Smith, I think he’s the only one…
No. I think “you’re” the only one. :-)
So it the point here that the first inning of a start is the same a relief appearance?
Is this a continuation of the Joe Janish theory that the team would be best served by throwing a few relievers in the early innings and then letting the starters come in and pitch through the 9th?
Pedro has been terrible in the first innings, but that does not automatically mean he could not be an effective reliever.
And for everyone kicking dirt on the guy, he AGAIN pitched well enough to beat Jorge Campillo and a parade of scrub relievers Saturday. It’s not his fault the only guy who brought his bat was himself.
The last two games in Atlanta are on the offense – they should be winning these games going away. What’s hilarious is how the game sunday was virtual carbon of the previous Sunday…and yet did anyone, from Jerry on down, see any urgency to takc on any runs? They had 1st and 2nd with no outs in the 6th and 7th and I swear from that point in both in both innings the frame was over within 3 minutes total. Is that pennant race baseball? Are you kidding me?
Totally agree with you. I don’t understand how the nitwits on here are saying that Pedro can’t be an effective reliever. It is totally different than starting a game. With him knowing that he only has to go 1 or 2 inning I would bet that he could be decent. Why not give it a shot?
So he averages about 1 run in each of his first inning appearences. To be honest, I would be happy with a guarneteed 1 run in the 8th instead of the 27 run carosel that comes in from the bullpen.
Brewers collapsed last year… and they are doing it again this year. Ironically – they wrap up the season against the Cubs whom the Mets play tonight.
I hope Pedro checks his ego at the door and realize that the best chance for the Mets to make the playoffs should they still be on top (East or Wild Card) is to get his @$$ to the bullpen – post season included. If it takes him a while to warm up, he should be in the ballpark an hour and a half earleir than normal… and drinking however amount of coffee he has during pre-game warmups.
Pen or start, I don’t wanna see Pedro any more. If he was the 5th starter I could live with it, but not the 4th. The guy doesn’t have anything left, and the Sox knew it. This was a terrible signing, no matter how anyone spins it as a promotional tool to get other players in 05′.
I’ll be thankful to be rid of Pedro, Duque and Alou at the end of the year, guys who have handcuffed and handicapped our town down the stretch of the last couple years with their injuries and over-sized pay-checks.
Memo to Omar: Go young. go young go young!!! One or two older veterans are great for a team, but the core has to be young.
“This was a terrible signing, no matter how anyone spins it as a promotional tool to get other players in 05′. ”
-so getting beltran(best CF in the game), santana, wagner etc and pedro being a 15 game winner in 05 was bad…yea terrible signing from omar.
“I’ll be thankful to be rid of Pedro, Duque and Alou at the end of the year, guys who have handcuffed and handicapped our town down the stretch of the last couple years with their injuries and over-sized pay-checks”
-gotta think who organized that suddenly all these contracts are over in 08 going into a new stadium in 09…na couldnt have been omar..nvrmind
“Memo to Omar: Go young. go young go young!!! One or two older veterans are great for a team, but the core has to be young.”
-I think he got it pal(murphy/evans/niese/fmart).
one or two vets-Delgado/Santana
Core-Wright-25/Reyes-25/Beltran-31
It’s such a myth that Pedro convinced these guys to come here. They threw lots more money than anyone else did at Beltran. THAT is why he’splaying in Queens. It admitted he wanted to play for the Yanks but they didn’t wanna get into a bidding war. You think Wagner the hick wanted to come to NY and get crucified?? He followed the green.
He had a very good year in 05′ but where was he in the playoffs in 06? Where was he down the stretch in 07? How bout El Duque, you Omar apologist?
The Mets have an UNDER ,500 record with Pedro signing. Look it up.
Sorry, but Omar has failed as a GM. You can’t be an inning from the World series two years ago and take these big steps backwards with that payroll
“It’s such a myth that Pedro convinced these guys to come here.”
-maybe but you used it in your arguement to prove your point that the pedro signing was worse even with this spin and all i was saying is if this is true (which neither YOU nor i know for a fact) then having the best CF in the game, A upgrade in closer over looper and the best pitcher in baseball is well worth it imo.
“You think Wagner the hick wanted to come to NY and get crucified”
-no more like continue his success that you mentioned later in your arguement
“He had a very good year in 05″
“but where was he in the playoffs in 06?”
-he had 3 saves
“Where was he down the stretch in 07″
-Pitching i suppose..he had 34 saves with only 5 blown saves in 2007.
“How bout El Duque, you Omar apologist”
-I am not an omar appologist but i rather straghten out the misinterpretations. el duque went 9-5 over 27 games last year. Did omar pick up his option..sure since he did a good job for us last year besides the injury and we were going into this year with an 0-6 pelfry at the time. Can omar predict injuries..probably not but his rational i think was logical. Not to mention his 8-3 record in the post season with a 2.63 ERA.
“The Mets have an UNDER ,500 record with Pedro signing. Look it up”
-lol ok sure why not
mets 03 66-95
mets 04 71-91
-pedro gets signed
mets 05 83-79
mets 06 97-65
mets 07 88-74
ummm what stats are you looking at…….
im not going to continue..
My comments about where was he in 06′ and 07′ were pertaining to Pedro, NOT Wagner.
Starts in games HE PITCHED, not overall.
then maybe you should be clearer in your posts
you said
“The Mets have an UNDER ,500 record with Pedro signing” since you apparently meant starting
pedro 05 GS:31 record 15-8
pedro 06 GS:23 record 9-8
pedro 07 GS:5 record 3-1
again where do you get your stats……
also you said “He had a very good year in 05′ but where was he in the playoffs in 06″ after talking about wagner. I will agree that pedro has not pitched for most of his contract due to injury but to sign someone with the pedigree of pedro has gone along way to restoring the mets image from seasons past. You could also credit omar for getting the mets finishing back over .500(how quickly we forget those dreadful seasons) but im sure that would be too much to ask from you.
And BTW, should the Mets make a playoff appearance, they need to go with a man rotation, utilizing Niese and Parnell as long men. I guess you gotta put Petey on the team, though I’m not sure where you would use him.
3 man rotation, lol
can someone please talk about beltran bunting yesterday?
he needs to be fined every time he bunts on his own
That really had me puzzled/pissed off as well (in the 7th right)
he is one of our RBI producers and he wastes a strike on a weak bunt attempt???
Church and his weak DPs need to cease at once.
no to pedro throwing from the bp imo. If moyer can leard to pitch at age 45 then we need pedro to learn to do the same.
I like Pedro. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Pedro. BUT, I have zero confidence whenever he takes the mound. I actually didn’t watch Saturday night’s game because I knew they would lose. I know as a fan I should watch as many games I can (actually, as many games as my wife lets me watch..LOL), but I just could not watch this version of Pedro put the Mets in a 2 or 3 run hole to start a game again.
pedro’s done as a starter.
i wouldn’t mind seeing him for 1 inning at a time during this week since the bullpen is terrible anyway. let’s see if he can dial it up for 20 pitches.
Can he not pitch at all? He’s terrible.
i understand the point of the post, but one inning in relief and one inning out of the pen is entirely different. u’ve seen him start and heard what keith had to say. pedro isn’t entirely warm yet art the beggining, and toward the second and thrid inning hes throwing considerably harder than the first, sometimes 5 mph more. if you essentially give pedro 2 extra hours to get warm (i.e. the 1-6 innings) he may be extremely effective, especially since he wouldnt be worried about conserving energy, hed just go out there and let it fly.
Hey, as long as he pitches after the first inning we’ll be fine.
