The Mets are expected to officially announce
later this week the schedule of events for Sunday’s farewell celebration to Shea Stadium.
They better hurry up, though. I know lots and lots of fans are frustrated as they are trying to make plans for that day.
From what I can gather, a) the major part of the celebration will occur after the game, and b) expect to see Mike Piazza, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Robin Ventura, Edgardo Alfonzo, Darryl Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, and Jerry Koosman, as well as nearly 40 other former players.
I have reason to believe that both Wally Backman and Dwight Gooden will be there as well, though I’ll believe it when I see it.
Lastly, I do not expect this to be as over-the-top or self-serving as the Yankee Stadium goodbye – thankfully. Instead, I think it will be more simple.
I have tickets and will be there with my dad, and I am far more excited and emotional at this point than I ever thought I would be.

They can’t blow it up fast enough
Especially is Omar, Castillo, and the bullpen are still in the stadium
I will say this as a ticket holder, if the Mets DO NOT make the playoffs and the Wilpons still give Omar Minaya a contract extension. On the last game of the season I am going to have a petition for all Met fans to sign to have Omar FIRED!! I think it would be a SCAM to have this guys contract extended after this team has collapsed after two consecutive years. It is nothing short of all these corporate fat cats that make millions of dollars while their companies are being bailed out by the tax payers. We as fans should continue to buy and pay the salaries of Omar Minaya where the team he pieced together falls apart in the clutch?
After the petitions are signed I am going to mail it to the Wilpons and if they still give Omar the extension I think as “genuine” Met fans we should NOT buy any tickets to the new stadium and let the only ones that attend being the corporations. Considering the Wilpons think that we are STUPID and will still watch this club after collapses in two consecutive years and Omar get rewarded with FOUR year extension? WILPONS you have got to be kidding
I couldn’t agree more. I’ll be the first to sign!!
That’s ridiculous. Since Omar’s been GM, the team has gotten better and if we don’t make the playoffs, it wouldn’t be a collapse. It’s called a pennant race.
Man, can you imagine if the Mets miss out on the playoffs by losing that Sunday game? How dreary would that celebration be then?
Wow. Carter has really fallen off the tree branch…
I’m pretty sure he is in the “over 40 others”
I hope I get invited
Oh, yeah!
I can’t WAIT TO SEE Dr. K!!!!
He’ll be there as long as he stays on his meds like I asked him to.
To repeat an early post of this week, I wonder what will happen if the Mets lose the WC, and even worse if the Mets lose that game to lose the WC.
Last year, the team lost and then disappeared never to come back out and thank the fans as it usually tradition. We Mets fans waited around but they never came.
So what about this year? Hopefully the Mets would not be so rude.
To be honest, I would love an apology from the team for their disappearance.
come on I hate to break it to ya but do you think the mets players care about the fans? did u forget about delgados curtain call? they dont give a damn, overpriced chokers
Matt – are they actually going to rub our misery in our face? Are they going to utterly disrespect the Mets to that extreme even if they are eliminated?
Omar’s announced 4 year extension from the notorious NY media leak was just the icing on the cake.
No jogging around the track. No Willie slides. No nothing. Silence. The wind. That’s all I want to see at Shea if we don’t make the playoffs. It’s all this team deserves. Peace of mind for the fans.
Perhaps moving out of Shea Stadium will rid the ghosts. Oh wait, it’s not far away. The ghosts of the past and the ghosts of the fun will make this team zombies for life.
If some how the Mets make the playoffs, could they let the fans do the lap? No, they don’t love us that much lol
I want there to be a staging area where all fans will gather. And the blow up the stadium. That would be perfect for me.
How many posts of mine have been deleted today?? This site is a joke. Let us voice our opinion PLEASE!!
Matt
In all seriousness, if the team flops out of the postseason on that final day, are you really going to sit there and watch the closing ceremony? I don’t know if I would have the patience to sit there and watch glories and stars past if the present team just pulled that on me.
Imagine if they had opened Citi Field this year, and the last game at Shea was Glavine’s abortion? Man that would have been depressing…
doc will bring down the house.
just like he filled it up in the 80’s like no other mets player…ever…
Seaver?
seaver was certainly a better pitcher, but didn’t fill the stadium as much as doc. 60’s had much lower attenda.nce
i don’t care what the majority says but i will miss shea terribly
Will these old timers be available to play???
wow, people are angry. Remember, the ceremonies are about more than about the last two seasons – they are about the 40 year history of Shea. Lighten up, peeps.
Yes really people get a grip. Let’s not all be like spoiled Yankee fans and sulk and throw a temper tantrum. Try to celebrate the team you root for. A lot of people complain theres not enough celebration of the Mets history. Now here’s a chance for some and I think the players there should be greatly honored. Get with it fans.
How about winning at least the Wild Card prior to Sunday so that everyone can really enjoy the closing ceremonies.
does anyone know if there are any plans for us out of towners to see the pre and post game celebration? mlb.tv never shows anything except the 1st pitch till the last pitch. any way it might be on sny.tv or somewhere else? anyone have any idea??
I’ll be there too. I hope Koosman and Seaver bring their gloves and Piazza and Straw bring their bats; we might need them.
I just scored a 3B upper reserve box seat on mets.com (single seats are still available), I really hope I don’t end up jumping off the edge if the Mets blow it again.
I am glad that this event will be both smaller and less televised than the closing of Yankee Stadium. It is special for Mets fans only and thats the way it should be. I will be there with my father and grandfather who have been fans since the beginning and I wouldn’t have it any other way. No matter what happens with the rest of the season… LETS GO METS!!!!
I think after a long long hard time dealing with it, good to see Gooden coming back.
As for Sunday, who the hell knows. Perhaps Shea has a little more funky magic left in the box.
Anytime Willie Mays is in the yard, it is something special.
I went to tonights game and it was my last night game. I will be there for the last game but for some reason it started to hit me. My last night game wow.
Hey, im all about the Mets over the Yanks…BUT Shea has nothing on Yankee Stadium. I wouldnt exactly call their celebration “over-the-top or self-serving”. Its one of the most storied stadiums IN THE HISTORY of all sports. I thought it was an appropriate and moving tribute. That said…bear down mets and make the playoffs! Semper Fi!
Understand your basic point, but to me Yankee Stadium lost all its historical significance after it was completely remuddled. Its nothing but a mid-70’s relic. They need to get over themselves.
im goin and i am sitting right behind home plate and i will probably be able to see there faces unlike all u guys that will be sitting in the nose blead hhahaha
richieb7,
I hope you choke on a pretzel in the first inning.
btw where is the “nose blead” located?
I expect to get flamed for this but here goes. This has to be the most pathetic display of so-called “fandom” I have ever seen. “I will boo them if they lose,” etc etc. For better or for worse, I am a Mets fan. In win or loss, I am a Mets fan. And I have gone on record to say that Shea is a dump, but it is our dump. If they are eliminated from postseason, who cares, this is a celebration of our memories at Shea — not to mention that EVERYONE who says “the collapse was last year” (you know who you are) still thinks they will collapse. Guess what? They beat one of the best teams in baseball in a game they SHOULD win with our ace on the mound last night. They WILL make the playoffs. This team is NOTHING like 2007, that’s something you people just need to get over. I will say though that Shea was rocking last night, but you “fans” please — get out of mom’s basement or just keep posting to MoviePoopChute.com. Seriously, we don’t need your negativity at Shea on Sunday anyway.
I’m with you Coop. If that Sunday game turns into a season-breaker, I will be crushed, but I plan on doing everything I can to swallow it and say goodbye with a smile.
I’m trying to imagine if this had all been last year, and the farewell game had been Glavine’s “gem.” I was there with my six-year old son, and I honestly think he and I might have sat in silence for the entire game once that first inning was over. Imagine a six-year old sitting somberly for eight innings. I’m trying to imagine how I would have been able to watch a post-game farewell after that travesty.
Here’s hoping that the ideal comes to pa-s-s – Mets clinch the WC by Saturday, and Sunday they are playing for the division title! That way, the game will have some juice, but without the potential for a post-game apocalypse.
For goodness sakes, Matt. “P-A-S-S” got me filtered on my first try? You deserve a refund on whatever software is screening these posts.
Matt,
Any plans for a Metsblog tailgate before the game?
For all the people who ridicule Shea Stadium it will be interesting reading this board at this time next year. How many of you think that you will be getting into a ballpark that will have roughly 12,000 or more fewer seats? How much will you be willing to pay to get into see games in July? What about premium games?
Put it this way, over 50,000 people were at the game last night. next year their will be 42,500 seated. That leaves 8,000 (give or take) watching on your flat screen and hopefully on HD if you can afford it? I wonder if you will be so enthusiastic about a new ballpark when you are seated at HOME rather than in the Upper Deck. If you look at the economy today (especially in NY) I wonder how many will be able to afford the new ticket prices when demand is high and seating is limited.
My guess is that after two weeks the bathrooms will be just as wretched at Citifield as they are at Shea if you are lucky enough to there. It may not have hit you yet but you are no longer waking up on a Saturday (any Saturday) and heading to a ballgame unless you have a season ticket or planned the day months in advance. You might not think you will miss Shea, but trust me on this you will miss Shea. Think about it.
I agree with all of your points. And I won’t miss Shea other than from a nostaglic ‘it was time to move on’ point of view.
Shea Fan, do you have a season plan?
Coop, I have two 7 pack plans. By that, I mean I have 3 seats for the Opening Day Pack and 3 seats for the Shea Goodbye Pack. Wife and kid included. I also attended about 10 other games on the fly with my son. I also took a trip to Miami and Philadelphia to see them play. I grew up in Queens and attended my first game with my father in 1971. I had the old Tuesday and Friday package in the 1980’s. The Mets to date, have not yet indicated if their will be any 7 packs or anything similar (20 pack?). They want season ticket holders locked in. I am not blaming them from a purely business standpoint. Business is business.
My point is that I have seen many people taking shots at Shea. Obviously, many are valid. Sure if you are a season ticket holder (especially a company or business owner) the amenities (restaurants etc.) are great. I just wonder how many folks dreaming of all the wonderful new features will be able to enjoy them or afford them. I personally know of brokers buying season tickets. To them the lowering of the capacity by the Mets is a business opportunity. An investment of say $2500 can result in profit of 10K to 12K per ticket resale. Add on playoffs and it is $$$$$.
I guess what I am saying is a large % of our fan base are not season ticket holders including many here. Will sparkling restaurants matter if you can’t get in? How much will we all be willing to pay?
I’ve tried to reply numerous times, and my post gets lost (sigh). I have a season plan, and I’m paying significantly LESS than what I pay for what I perceive to be better seats in a more state of the art facility. I am neither wealthy nor corporate, just a regular average jane who loves the team. Like most fans. So if you can’t find affordable seats, contact me. I don’t mark up ;-)
