Opinion: I Can’t Fall Asleep
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 23, 2008 12:19 am

I tried to fall asleep, but it’s just not possible.

Here’s what is running through my mind…

Luis Castillo is known for being one of the most difficult people in the league to strike out – yet, in the game’s final at bat tonight, he takes three straight fastballs right down the plate.  I don’t understand why Jerry Manuel didn’t pinch hit for him in this spot.  Also, I still don’t understand why he is a better option than Argenis Reyes in the starting lineup.  I know, Reyes has just one hit in his last 26 at bats.  Well, Castillo has just four hits in his last 27 at bats.  Plus, Reyes plays a better second base, and the sight of him does not make me want to bang my head against the wall.

Prior to tonight’s game, Jerry Manuel said he is willing to use his starting pitchers in relief, on their throw day.  So, I’m thinking, tomorrow, maybe he should start Mike Pelfrey for just one inning, then bring in Johan Santana in the second, thus increasing Santana’s chances of making it through the ninth.  I’m only half joking, by the way.

With 11 hits, and 11 runners left on base, I am only able to think about the runs that did not score – as opposed to the five that did.

Bobby Parnell let up one run in two innings, then retired the final four batters he faced.  He has earned more time on the mound.

I still believe the Mets have the ability to outlast the Brewers and get in to the playoffs.  However, if they do not, I hope the Wilpons are wise enough to re-evaluate every aspect of this team, including the General Manager and much of it’s personnel – because I worry about what may happen to the overall organization’s identity if things, again, end badly.

In other words, this September, there is more on the line than just a playoff appearance.

Lastly, my wife is right, I am no longer young enough to eat cold pizza and beer at 9 pm.  It gives me heartburn, and clearly keeps me awake.  I hate when she’s right.

  1. It was free rally towel day and it’s in tatters now. A little tums and some rest will help us all feel a little better, Matt.

Our season was OVER when we went 3-4 against the Braves and Nats, its that simple. IF and thats a big IF, we make the playoffs do you feel comfortable or confident that the pen can hold a game after the 7th or that we might score a run or two after the 5th? Im not, we do not have enough to make it out of the first round and I would rather see us fail now than latter. HELL, I would like to see the Cubbies win it all. And in the off season GUT THIS TEAM!! Dump the pen and start new, get a closer, a first and second baseman and a left fielder. I cannot watch this garbage anymore. Wait until next year.

      • ridethesnake says:

“I would rather see us fail now than latter”

I would rather fail later than now, without a question.

        • jimyager says:

so you would rather see the METS get blown out 1-2-3 in round one, like the Phillies last year?

        • Xavier22 says:

Yep. Even that scenario is better than not making the playoffs at all and hearing more talk about THE COLLAPSE.

  2. nymets945 says:

Matt join the club about not sleeping. Its hard watching the Mets play right now and I agree with u the whole team including Omar needs to be looked at if we miss the playoffs. Its time for a change.

  3. 1985Mets says:

    I WANT DAVEY BACK…..

Would it be nice to have Davey Johnson back???

  4. mgska55 says:

I feel ya. The state of this team is mind boggling.

By the way, you can’t be serious mrzjo31? That’s a joke, right? There’s no such thing as “jinxing”. There’s only playing winning baseball or losing baseball, and right now the Mets have gotten really good at the latter.

  5. 1985Mets says:

Can we please not talk about Castillo any longer, Boy does my blood boil when i hear his name…

    • backinbusiness says:

i’m surprised no one in my building called the cops when he hit into that DP. they must be met fans upstairs, too.

  6. Wright88 says:

I’ve been saying this for a while, the difference in their offense does not outweigh the difference in their defense. Argenis is such a better fielder it is ridiculous, and yes his offense is horrible but Castillo is not all that great with the bat.

  7. Genesis Does says:

7 (and 17) is easily the unluckiest number in recent Mets history. So when i saw there were 7 games left, I knew we were screwed. This season falls squarely on the shoulders of the pathetic, horrible, overpaid bullpen.

Heilman forgot how to pitch, we never found a long man to take over for Darren Oliver, we never got a setup man to replace the injured Sanchez, and now we dont have a 7th or 8th inning pitcher, nor do we have a closer.

IMO, the only bullpen pitchers I want to see next year are Feliciano and Smith, and if Ayala wants to stay, he can be the setup man. Everyone else has to go. Blowenweiss needs to be cut, Heilman needs to be traded. Sanchez can either throw 96 or go home. We need a closer. we need relievers that can get out of an inning. I would not mind at all if we passed on Krod and traded for one of the Corderos. If chad is healthy, im sure omar can dial up his old expos buddies and get something done.

    • ridethesnake says:

“7 (and 17) is easily the unluckiest number in recent Mets history. So when i saw there were 7 games left, I knew we were screwed.”

Now there are 6 games left, are we ok?

      • toomanyuniforms says:

This talk of jinxes and lucky numbers is nothing short of idiotic. Are we really that desperate to have our own “Billy Goat” to whine about? Folks, we don’t need the phantasms. Luis Castillo is all too real.

  8. Burn_Philly_Down says:

I hear ya matt, can’t sleep either, but i don’t have heartburn. I just keep thinking of last year… ; (

    • ridethesnake says:

What happened to all the people that claimed last year was over and to focus only on this exciting season? Denial.

      • ridethesnake says:

davidbrenner and bvaz both were the ones that went out of their way to explain how last year has nothing to do with this year. DENIAL

  9. magic00700magic says:

My biggest fear is a repeat of last year.

    Do you remember?

Mets get blown out in the first inning, Delgado breaks his hand and the Mets never make a run in the game.

Me like many faithfuls wait around, despite the loss and the numbness.

Wait around for what you ask?

We wait around for the team to come back out say good bye to the fans and vice versa.

Do you all remember what happened? Thats right. The team never came out. They disappointed all their fans.

Not only did they lose the game. But then they turned their backs on their fans and did not come out to say thanks and good bye and allow their fans to say thanks and good bye.

We fans never got an apology for that.

In fact I do not think it was ever mentioned anywhere.

Well, this year is steaming towards a similar finish. Wait, no, it cant happen that way. Why? Because Santana is scheduled to pitch the last game.

    Thank goodness.

Whether that game means playoffs or not, I am thankful that the game will at least me “game”. And that the Mets wont decide to bail on its fans again.

Also given its the last game at Shea I am sure a no show by the team would not be permitted.

In fact, the fact that it is the last day could be a distraction if the game is still playoff important.

Who knows. All I care about is when its said and done, the team comes back out and shows a little love to its fans.

They owe us from last year. They owe us for this year.

  10. metsmad22 says:

Matt please please please make a post about Castillo’s record starting and how no other current starter has a losing record. PLEASE! It cannot be a coincidence…..Over 120 games started and yet he sports a losing record, no one else does. How can this be coincidence? And just look at the team when he was gone! They were the ‘06 Mets. Magic Mets. They had fun. Jose Reyes was the League MVP. And since he’s been back?

    • Genesis Does says:

Seriously, Cohen and Keith admit to reading metsblog in the morning. You have the power Matt. Be the voice of the people. GET LUIS OUT OF THE LINEUP. it may be a coincidence, but the whole damn team just plays like crap when he plays. Look at the splits….LOOK AT THE SPLITS!

      • Lets_Go_Mets says:

If that’s true, then they must have pretended to be surprised when 90% of the fans responded that the Mets would miss the playoffs in that text poll. ;)

        • ridethesnake says:

Reyes was called up right when the team won 10 straight, but even AFTER that has a winning record. Mets are 29-17 when he plays. Heck – they are 9-4 in the 13 games he has his 1-30 slide!!! Before this 1-30 he was 9-23 in 5 games — a 4-1 record!

Combine those streaks and 10-53 is under .200, but 13-5 record is fine with me. Luis is 5-7 in his last 12 and 39-44 overall. And yes, the only player with a losing record.

        • ridethesnake says:

That said, I would still bat the 2bman 9th tonight. Santana is a better hitter than both of them, and they can act as ouble lead-off if they happen to get on base.

  11. dykstraw says:

season’s six games long and we got a game head start.

    let’s roll.

  12. losmets7 says:

    How old are you, Matt?

  13. metsmad22 says:

Please Matt……I am sure that if castillo left New York forever tomorrow, we’d make the playoffs.

  14. mistermet says:

Culture has to completely change if this goes down bad for Mets. GM, Manager are gone automatically, obviously…but I also think you need to change as many of the players as possible, ESPECIALLY the bullpen- which is what should have been done last year. Only 1-2 guys from that pen can come back- maybe just Smith, Parnell…everybody else gone- Schoeneweis, Feliciano, Sanchez, Heilman gone obviously. Castillo gone, maybe Delgado gone even in favor of Carp (even though makes sense to pick up option), just to change culture and shed as many collapsers from the team as possible….Easley, Marlon Anderson gone (why is he on team anyway?). Pedro gone obviously, maybe even Perez gone too. You need a new GM, most importantly, otherwise Omar will feel compelled to keep “his guys” and feel sentimental to them and to “give them another chance”- but a 3rd chance is one too many. Enough is enough, need to do a 180, as should have been done last year.

  15. mistermet says:

    Culture has to completely changed..

    • nycuconn says:

WE needed bullpen help all year and Omar did not get it. It is not the culture. Jerry has change a lot of all that and every team has their issues. OMAR knew it . He flirted with Houston Street and Brian Fuentes and he did not pull any trigger before the deadline.. …. If we had an average bullpen we would be 10 games up on those losers from that loser city in PA. As much as he gets the credit for some good moves, he has to take a hit for this. When we had that 10 game winning streak before the All Star break we looked like a W.S. contender. The bullpen was incredible but that was a false sense of confidence he felt and we all felt because I told everyone about the blown saves earlier in the year and this was just a peak…I had no idea it would ever be this bad though. THIS IS OMAR’S FAULT ALONE.

      • rogasm says:

I agree that Omar will be the scapegoat this offseason, if they don’t make it, but we don’t know if he really had a chance (i.e. players) to get Fuentes or Street. It is his fault by not addressing the situation in the offseason, and instead giving a horrible contract to Castillo and Alou.

      • FlightFromHouston says:

        I agree 100% !!

    • ridethesnake says:

I agree, sadly, that if the Mets don’t make the playoffs they won’t bring back Delgado ad may even trade a Reyes or Beltran. It could be a dramatic facelift, and it could be done by a new GM.

Keep hope alive, I’d rather make it as wild card and beat the Cubbies in the first round and forget all this.

  18. mistermet says:

And you can’t wait 2 weeks, like ownership did last year, to make a decision. Don’t have people twist in the wind- just drop the axe on Manuel, all coaches, as well as Minaya, Beranazard and all his henchman immediately( the day after the regular season), as most credible organizations do.

    • X-Man says:

If that’s what would happen if the Mets don’t make the playoffs, well then shoot, I’d almost rather them not make it in order to see these much needed changes! I’m with you, one more September swoon and we(they) have no choice but to can everyone and get new, fresh blood in here.

      • ridethesnake says:

I dunno — if thy don’t make the playoffs they can change all 40 players, the GM and the manager, and the media will still make the collapses an issue next September.

    • MH says:

Yeah it’s Manuel’s fault we have no bullpen.
It’s the everyday players’ fault we have no bullpen.

WE HAVE NO BULLPEN. For this everyone is ready to gut the team and ditch the manager? I hope there are no doctors posting on this site. Bad diagnosis. Someone has an infected toe and you want to cut off all four limbs.

As for denial, the Mets still have the lead in the wildcard. Do you want to members of the team to focus on last year’s collapse and psych themselves into another one. Being in denial usually involves pretending something isn’t so and therefore not dealing with it. No one is denying the bullpen is a problem. Frankly last year’s collapse involved the bullpen rather prominently as well but whereas it seemed to have a domino affect on the rest of the team at times last year, this year the everyday players are generally producing and the established starters are pitching well. They are doing a good job of blocking out that counterproductive negative thought…the kind of cancerous thought that can make its content self fulfilling. But when the team loses, fans start flailing around and lash out at everyone connected with the team.

The collapse-obsessed media and fans have the potential to be a part of the problem–I don’t see how this kind of negativity and anxiety is part of the solution.

  19. mistermet says:

Everyone must be fired on Monday..

  20. mistermet says:

Don’t worry about hurting peoples’ feelings, like with Silly Willy last year- that’s the only way to gain back credibility with the fan base.

  21. DAG says:

great post. it pains me to say it though, but castillo is a better option than a. reyes. with castillo there’s at least a chance he’ll get on base, even if it’s only with the bases empty. there’s no place for either of them on next year’s roster, that’s for sure.

    • metsmad22 says:

you are so idiotic……with argenis the mets are 16-6….with castillo like 65-69

      • ridethesnake says:

        Argenis 29-17
        Castillo 39-44

Argenis is 1 for last 30, team is 9-4 in that stretch. In the same time frame, the team is 5-7 with Luis. He was 9-23 before that and the team was 4-1 in that strethc. Hit or not, they win with Reyes. They lose with Castillo.

    • X-Man says:

He may be a little better at getting on base than A. Reyes DAG, but for whatever reason, this team just doesn’t win when he plays. and that’s not a small sample either. I honestly believe the guy just drags this team down. I rather see weak hitting (No Hitting) Reyes in there than this worthless ball player. I said back when Castillo was about tow days due from coming off the DL and the Mets were flying high, I said when Castillo returns to the ball club, the Mets would revert to their losing ways and sure enough…………………………just go back and look it up, it’s just amazing how they just lose when this guy plays. I know it’s not “Logical” and I should know better, but it’s a fact.

      • SovereignRonnie says:

X-Man, this is one issue where “logic” needs to take a backseat. I’m a huge SABR guy, and even I admit that maybe stats-heads have overlooked the impact of “clutch,” “chemistry,” etc.

This season is getting eerily reminiscent.

  22. Wright88 says:

damn…why so many posts in a row?

  23. Wright88 says:

Btw how bad would it be to stick Murphy at 2B and Evans in the OF?

  24. LongJohnMaine says:

    Luis Castillo = EPIC FAIL

  25. mistermet says:

And in 6 weeks we’ll hear how they don’t have the money for Sabathia or K-Rod, and meanwhile this organization is printing money like they are the Federal Reserve (new stadium, naming rights, new network, insane ticket/concession prices).

I don’t want to hear about $$ or payroll being too high from Wilpon anymore, there is no reason this team can’t have a payroll in the upper 100 millions. Nobody will be able to convince me otherwise.

    • Sylar says:

Not signing K-Rod would be a mistake but Sabathia???
The man is disgustingly fat, he’s 28, already has a ton of mileage on his sausage arms, and he’ll want more than Santana, and I don’t think the Wilpons want to give that kind of contract to another SP again, which is completely reasonable.

      • X-Man says:

With his weight problem, trust me, he’s a year or two from a serious injury.

        • egnirc says:

So will that be the Mets organizations new meme like Vlads shoulder, …C.C.’s fat?

        • Sylar says:

So you think it’s reasonable to give a Santana+ contract to Sabathia, with his girth and all those innings on his arm??

Cool. I’ll give you two years before he blows out his arm.

      • ehog says:

How can you dog Sabathia? Look at his record with the Brewers. Not only that, he’s man enough to go out on short rest when he knows he won’t even be there next season. If the Mets had someone who could man up like him, we not be talking about all this.

    • irish_eagle says:

I suspect the banking crisis fallout will seriously reduce the Mets’ spending flexibility for next season and probably beyond. New York is the banking capital of America and there are going to be a LOT of people out of work.

Things are about to change and not for the better, I fear.

  26. D in Ben Lomond says:

Hey, you could always turn off the Mets and watch whats happening in the real world. Our Treasury Secretary—the one who made billions for Goldman Sachs on subprime loans, and took executive compensation in the tens of millions– has a plan for us all that is more depressing than the Mets 3 game loss streak.

There are way more depressing goings on out there. Baseball is a fun escape from it. Lets keep it positive.

Be thankful Beltran didn’t get hurt. We’ll be alright.

    LETS GO METS!!!

    • nycuconn says:

how do you know he is not hurt. Do you have the team’s doctors cell phone. He almost did not come out to hit!.

    • X-Man says:

Tell me about it. I’m a senior Loan Officer for a large Mortgage Company and we are really getting hammered. We were never a sub-prime lender but now everyone has to pay for everyone else’s greed! Especially the poor borrowers who can’t qualify for any more loans because of evr tightening guidelines and restrictions. But, the US will bail out these financials companies while homeowners lose their homes to foreclosures.

      • hbrill61 says:

Oh and I guess these “poor borrowers” should bear no responsibility on excepting loans they knew they could not afford.

        • mr.gee21 says:

Wow, guess we weren’t focusing on the “keep it positive” point of that post, eh? We are ready to argue about everything here! (don’t get me wrong, you have a somewhat valid point, just no need for it here…)

  27. nycuconn says:

it is sad when these loses that keep adding up do not sting as much anymore. We should have won this darn division and let philly gloat all they want. Our time will come. I may be gray and old but it will come.

  28. X-Man says:

Steve Phillips said something about two or three months ago on ESPN that seems to make more and more sense as this team unfolds right before our eyes with ANOTHER September swoon. His whole premise was that the Mets (Wilpons) have fostered this “Open Door” policy where everyone can go to anyone and voice their opinions and concerns. In theory it’s a good idea, but as Phillips pointed out, you can’t have players going around and OVER managers heads. You need to have a tighter control and much more accountability. Phillips basically said that this Mets culture of “Everyone has a right to go to the top with any concerns” has created a culture of back stabbers and no accountability and disrespect to the manager. He said as long as this remains like this the Mets will NEVER reach their potential. Boy, it’s sure starting to look like Mr. Philips might have something there, and trust me, I’m not a Steve Philips fan by any means, I still think he’s a jerk, but he made some really valid points.

    • patrick says:

All due respect X-man. Steve Phillips commenting on the Mets is basically the equivalent of me telling you that I am the greatest living human being of all time. That is to say, Steve is about Steve and his viewpoint is SEVERELY compromised.

  29. Jessie says:

    Matt -

I was there MON night. Only 35,000 or so in the stands, all as tight as the team. But now it’s gone beyond just the emotions.

We had two golden opportunities to have big innings and we
don’t seem to realize – other teams scout us. How many times
do we have to see 1st and 2nd and no outs become a runner
on 3rd and 2 outs? Those ‘tailor made’ ground balls are RBI singles if we’d ever hit and run. Oh, wait, we did that last week
and the runner stopped at 2nd. And can someone tell me what
Endy Chavez did to be buried on the bench? Not that his stellar
ab in the 8th after Castillo’s hbp was a clinic on how to work a
3-1 count, but this team is so stale, putting him in the 2 hole and
Murphy in the 7th hole may help stop all these short-circuited
rallies. I mean, is Jerry expecting a 6-7-8 of Church, Castillo and Schneider to keep a rally going? They’re all dp/k material now…

The bench is pathetic. The ab’s by Evans, Easely and Castro were painful to watch. Parnell had decent pop, but he’s not a big spot guy. He has no out pitch! This is something that I’d like to see someone as the pitching coach about. Dan Warthen, do you watch these guys? How many 2 strike hits can one staff allow?

It doesn’t matter if it’s Johan or the last sap in the pen. They get
into a pitcher’s count and they all nibble. It’s either that or it’s a first pitch cookie that gets rocketed into the alley, or that hanger that Marquis deposited in the bullpen (ironically). I wonder what the splits are in the ab’s following a visit to the mound lately???

Maine is activated TUES. The starters are available on their throw days. The Cubs are giving us TUES’s game by starting
Sean Marshall. I’d actually like to SAVE Johan in this game.
Get up 5 (sure), and get him out of there after 6 innings but
sorry, he has to go 8 or get the cg. One day off from that pen
would be helpful with Pedro and Niese going again and Jerry saying he won’t throw Santana or Ollie on short rest…

I’d also start Cancel. He is the best defensive catcher we have and he isn’t an automatic out. He even excuted a hit and run
last week, even though the runner didn’t think so. Play him.

We have nothing to lose, right? ;)

And Matt, 2 activated charcoal tablets before 1st pitch helps!

    Crash positions, MRF 09.23

  30. Big Fat Paulie says:

I’ve been able to sleep just fine. I simply find out the score and don’t watch any highlights. I can figure out what happened.

    1. The Mets either don’t get clutch hits with 2 outs.
    2. David Wright fails again with runners in scoring position.
    3. The bullpen blows the game.

Any Eddie Kunz sightings. When Aaron Heilman is a better option than the “Closer of the Future” you know the manager:

    1. is too stubborn
    2. is too stupid
    3. has an extension in the works

$140 million for rubbish. Remind me again how Minaya got the GM position. it’s like Mangini with the Jets and Isiah with the Knicks… NEW YORK DESERVES BETTER THAN THESE 3 MORONS.

    • JohnsAmANIAC says:

I could not put it any better myself paulie, I so agree, dont forget that idiot mineya in there

    • darknova says:

I hightly doubt there will be any Kunz sightings for a while considering that Minaya’s mentality will most likely lead him to spend lots of money for an established closer. I’m perplexed as to why Heilman gets so much use when there are plenty of other guys out there, especially with the 40 man roster.

Let’s hope Eddie can get a chance next season with a new manager and we have the chance at having a good homegrown closer.

  31. irish_eagle says:

Lastly, my wife is right, I am no longer young enough to eat cold pizza and beer at 9 pm. It gives me heartburn, and clearly keeps me awake. I hate when she’s right.

Matt, she’s not right. You could have had milk & cookies at 7pm and you’d have still had heartburn last night. One night – especially last night – is not a sufficient sample to establish whether you can still handle the cold pizza & beer. You know what the say: ‘You’re only as old as the team you root for’.

  32. dc13 says:

While Omar has made some very good moves during his tenure and has done a good job at uncovering some diamonds in the rough, the Castillo 4-year contract was one of the worst and is Exhibit A to why Omar should be fired, particularly if this team doesn’t make the playoffs.

Also, we all knew how horrendous the pen was last September, even with Wagner, and yet all Omar did in the offseason essentially was trade Mota for Wise. A revamping was in order but he hoped a Duaner would come back and everyone else would somehow be better, just as he defied logic and prayed for and relied on the health and miraculous comebacks of a slew of older players like Alou, Pedro, El Duque, Castillo. He did not adequately address the biggest holes in the team either in the offseason or during the year, and that’s why I think he needs to go.

  33. patrick says:

Castillo needs to sit for standing at the plate and taking 3 strikes last night as if the Mets had twelve more outs in that game.

  34. letsnotrepeat07 says:

in the off season Omar, or whoever loser is the GM needs to get a new bullpen. We need K-Rod, plain and simple. And who cares how much money he costs.

  35. cver says:

Matt, I know this is a Mets site, but as a baseball fan, a New Yorker and an American, I am in mourning a bit over Yankee Stadium (you know how I feel about Shea, so I can’t even go there). I’m sure that your wife, as a Yankee fan, must be pretty tore up over losing The House That Ruth Built and Money Will Tear Down, so “condolences” to her from Cver!

I can’t sleep too well either, but fortunately I get some naps DURING the games. I had better not even get started on what I think, but will only say that Manuel has lost my faith by putting Heilman in on Sunday in a close situation. Nuff said there. LETS GO METS!!!

  36. Phillies in NYC says:

That was probably the farthest home run I’ve seen a pitcher hit in a long long time!

  37. mbreuer says:

I don’t think it’s so crazy working the game backwards. In fact, I’d recommend that they start Joe Smith or Heilman or Stokes, have them pitch the first two innings and then have Santana, Pelfrey and Perez pitch the final seven or six if you want to use two relivers at the start of the game. I think that’s a smarft strategy that could ge tus to the playoffs and maybe deep into them. This team needs to try something radical because at this rate its a complete repeat of last year.

  38. nostradamus says:

“Lastly, my wife is right, I am no longer young enough to eat cold pizza and beer at 9 pm. It gives me heartburn, and clearly keeps me awake. I hate when she’s right.”

please, leave the personal stuff out. no offense, but no normal fan cares about that.

  39. fortleemets says:

Pitching a lefty, who happens to be 21 and pitching in his 3rd major league start in the final week of the season (Philip Humber, anyone?), against a team full of monster hitting righties was simply a ludicrous idea. I would have much rather had Nelson Figeuroa pitching.

    • LIMetfan74 says:

Where are all those people whp wanted to see Neise??
You got what you wanted. Thats why you dont bring up a rookie in a pennant race in NYC! Once again this comes back to Omar if he didnt rely on an injury prone 50 year old pitcher and pick up another stater we might not be having this conversation.

  40. El Chupacabra says:

and Matt, by the way… dont blame the pizza and the beer at 9… You were not the only Met fan that lost some sleep last night…

  41. fortleemets says:

And why aren’t we running and being aggressive on the basepaths? Maybe if we had some more stolen bases and hit-and-runs, these double plays would be few and far between. They need to be more aggressive.

  42. Nordberg says:

Don’t be mad at Castillo….he pulled a half a** swing at strike 3 right down the middle. I was so hoping Wood would lose one and hit Castillo right between the eyes….man that would have brought joy to these eyes……one can dream, can’t he?

  43. janss36 says:

    This team has no fight…

    They have no heart…

    Just like last year…

And just like last year, they will have no posteason as well…

    • Nordberg says:

      That’s the spirit….woo hoo!!

    • darknova says:

Sadly, it’s hard to think any other way right now. Everytime I manage to get myself feeling optimistic, they crush my spirits once again. This is more frustrating than the end of the season should be.

  44. Kingman73 says:

    Matt,
I couldnt relate to what you just said moree. My night from the point that Jason Marquis cleared the wall to the end of the game was spent lurched forward on my couch with my face in my hands and my girlfriend rubbing my back to calm me down. Then I couldnt sleep so I laid awake watching any replay I could find of the Mets hightlights just to torture myself. Luis Castillo’s at bat to end the game was mind boggling. Just mind boggling. I just want him to go away.

  45. dykstraw says:

    it’s just a game

  46. since1964 says:

I think it was the bottom of the fourth last night…not sure, because I’m still numb…runners on first (Castillo) and second, nobody out. Schneider at the plate, and he hits a ground ball to shortstop and the Cubs turn the deuce. Of course Schneider isn’t going to burn anybody with his speed, but he ran hard. Castillo? Didn’t run hard, and checked out into right field as the turn was being made at second. Come on, at least show me that you care. Run hard, stay in the basepath, slide if you can…just give me an effort. He plays lifeless baseball.
