Read: Shea Goodbye
By Mike Nichols - Sep 23, 2008 4:27 pm

With the Mets in a battle to avoid another September collapse, it’s important to take a moment and remember that for many of us, this week will be the final time we step foot inside and enjoy a game in Shea Stadium.

With that said, Kristian Dyer of ESPN.com pens a terrific piece on the other stadium closing in New York this week.

While reminiscing about the stadium’s history, Dyer speaks to a few Mets fans regarding their thoughts and memories about the house that William Shea built.

Meanwhile, click play below to watch rare footage of Shea Stadium’s construction and former manager Casey Stengel welcoming fans to Shea, courtesy of ReelSportsFans.com.

…i love that casey was excited about the escalators…classic casey…

…i’m still at a loss for words when it comes to speaking or writing about the final days of shea…it’s just strange that shea will be nothing but a memory come next season…

if the mets dont make the playoffs, just undo citi field

    Look out but:

Mets might get help this Saturday from an unexpected source…

    Mother Nature.

According to Weather.com there is a 70% chance of rain on Saturday.

This could help the Mets out by allowing us to skip a 5th starter on Saturday.

That being said, if the mets in becuase of such an adjustment and make the playoffs, that same adjustment could hurt them in the first round.

If there is a doubleheader Sunday, you get Johan on full rest, but who do you pitch with him? OP on three days?

I guess you pitch Johan on full rest game one, and if the Mets are .5 games back, you pitch OP on three days.

Wouldn’t it be weird if the Mets win game one to clinch and celebrate for the 30 mins between games. Some PHers would be drunk.

I’ll let you know when I find one…..

They’re still waiting for one of those “windows” you promised, metro boy.

It’s also supposed to rain on Thursday and Friday nights…

I love videos that automatically stream, ESPN must be the newest Metsblog sponsor.

  6. janss36 says:

Dude, can you not let this clip play automatically? I’m getting calls from IT…

If the mets dont make the playoffs this year, as much as I love shea it will officially symbolize more anguish and frustration than good so knock it down and hope for better karma in citifield.

  8. Tonight’s lineup is up on Rubin’s site:

“Carlos Beltran will play tonight, which will also feature Luis Castillo’s return to the two-hole.”

    5 Wright, 3B
    15 Beltran, CF
    21 Delgado, 1B
    11 Castro, C

I can’t beleive they continue to play Castillo. The Mets win when reyes plays!! I don’t care what his stats are. great job Jerry…

    • kendychavez says:

thank goodness. it was a little confusing with murphy and church hitting in the two-hole so much. i nearly forgot it was the mets without a terrible hitter batting second.

    • Made in the Shea-de says:

Oh, I get it. Castillo must only be this bad because he’s not protected down in the 7 hole.

Come one, Jerry. The writing’s on the wall. Play Argenis and bat him 9th. At least he won’t dog it.

  9. dcmetsfan says:

Argh, and then it streams again when you click on the comments section. Nevertheless, a fun little stroll down memory lane. I really won’t miss Shea – not that I get to go to more than one game per year anymore.

  10. docgood86 says:

Has anyone gone to garykeithandron.com? If so, did you notice the scoreboard with a score of 6-4 home team? Did you also notice it stops in the 7th inning..lol

Even when creating the website they knew the mets bullpen would blow the lead, so they decided to stop in the 7th…lol

    Shea Goodbye to Omar

  12. phoola says:

Well, I must have been in denial so far because I can barely believe that Shea will soon be gone. I have so many fond memories I just can’t fathom seeing my Mets play elsewhere. I remember my first time seeing it in all it’s glory, I remember all those years of watching Koosman and Seaver and Gentry and McGraw and Matlack, and Cleon Jones and Rusty Staub and Jerry Grote and George Theodore and of course Ed Kranepool.

It really hasn’t hit me yet but I must confess to shedding a tear when I saw watched this video. It brought back apll the promise of years of opening days as a kid, when there was a clean slate once again.

I don’t think I’ll be able to get to the new Corporate Home of the Mets anywhere near as much. I feel sorry that my kids won’t have the same relationship with their baseball team as I had with mine. I suppose that the new place will be far more comfortable as far as seating and sight lines and food and such but I can’t tell how long it will take before it ever feels like my home field.

  14. janss36 says:

Wonder what type of reception Omar and the Wilpons will receive following Sunday’s game… LOL

Can you see Fire Omar chants? I sure can…

  15. dazedandconfused says:

Castillo should be in the 8 hole

    Lefty Lineup for Mets

    1. Reyes
    2. Church
    3. Wright
    4. Beltran
    5. Delgado
    6. Castro
    7. Evans
    8. Castillo

  16. dazedandconfused says:

somehow I’d prefer the mets missing the post-season so we have more changes in the off-season. hopefully involving Omar.

  17. racemccloud says:

Without Omar, there’s no Johan. Without Johan, there’s no hope.

Without Omar, there’s no Tatis. Without Tatis, we’re not even at this point.

I realize that there also wouldn’t be Luis Castillo’s 4 year albatross of a contract, but the positives of Johan far outweigh the negatives of Castillo.

  18. Metshead1974 says:

Like Yogi said about Yankee Stadium, I won’t miss because it is in our hearts. They can tear down the stadium, but not the memories. I just ordered the Shea Goodbye DVD today, does anyone have any opinions about it?

  19. JefJarrett says:

When did they start selling jerseys and hats and such? Seems like in the old shots noone is wearing any Mets garb.

  20. docgoodens8ball says:

I like the quote at the end: “You’ll never get sick watching the Mets play.” I wonder if that guy is still alive and has been watching this season?

  21. Eggman says:

Sheesh, another Saturday game with rain. That has to be 5 or 6 this year. They will play that game even if they wait 8 hours. I would certainly be very angry if they make it a part of a Sunday DH and my ticket is useless. I bought the Saturday plan mainly because of the Yankees series, potential playoff tix, and most of all the last weekend.

  22. krispy644 says:

Shea is going to be torn down on a sour note…o wait….2 sour notes!
