Link: First-Round Draft Pick Production
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 24, 2008 4:08 pm

According to Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors, using a stat labeled WARP, “The Mets have gotten 30.9 wins this year due to first round picks,” which is the most in baseball.

Tim continues to explain, “David Wright, Mike Pelfrey, and Aaron Heilman were Mets first-rounders.  Johan Santana, Brian Schneider, and Ryan Church were acquired using first-round picks Philip Humber and Lastings Milledge.”

Dierkes also looks at WARP for the Brewers, Phillies, Rays, Twins, Angels and Red Sox.

Heilman has helped the Mets win games this season? hahahaha…..when?

  3. Gland says:

    Good lineup.

I think it’s just better if they play Argenis over Castillo. The production at this point is probably a wash (with a slight edge to Castillo). But with everything going on right now, the booing crowd can’t help.

    • rlewinter says:

Funny, Castillo’s numbers against Zambrano are relatively good, though I get frustrated seeing Castillo’s inability to get the ball out of the infield on the fly.

      • Nightlife says:

Yeah I’ve grown more frustrated with him lately too, but I think he should be in there to start tonight considering Zambrano isn’t going to throw more than 5/6 innings. After that you can pull him right away.

        • ridethesnake says:

But not to worry about the lefty heavy O — Neal Cotts is the only lefty in their pen and he never goes more than an inning.

      • BIGpelfcyyoung says:

castillo had good #s vs marquis too, too bad those were most likely accumulated 5 years ago when castillo was actually pretty good. now he’s the oppostie of good. I feel like we kaz matsui on the team again

        • patrick says:

Castillo was actually good just last year, he is doing terrible this year, no question, but it need not be embellished.

        • ravi3 says:

Don’t disrespect Kaz like that…At least he could drive the ball out of the infield.

  4. Nightlife says:

FYI, WARP is wins above replacement player, Matt.

    • Nightlife says:

Sorry, didn’t mean to be picky there (I don’t want to be one of “those” guys) because I just went to the link and it does define WARP. I just thought it might be better to define it in the post than saying something vague like “a stat labeled WARP” because most people here probably don’t know about/understand what WARP is.

  5. tical1334 says:

I think at this point we should just have Murphy playing everyday, regardless of the pitcher.

  6. zen says:

put wilmer flores at 2b…bet he’d be better than castillo or a. reyes :)

    • Nightlife says:

Probably. Both were frustrating to watch last night. Castillo did draw that walk to set up bases loaded for Wright that ended up tying the game. But he looked pretty bad other than that. A. Reyes couldn’t even lay down a bunt.

      • shea_guevara says:

As bad as Castillo is right now, he is a patient hitter (sometimes patient to a fault, as Gary Cohen said last night). So he forces the pitcher to work. He does not strike out a lot; more often than not, he will put the ball in play. And he is still a good (if somewhat hobbled) baserunner.

As you point out, A. Reyes couldn’t get a bunt down last night. He is not an experienced major league hitter. In a situation where I absolutely needed to get a runner over, work a count, or put the ball in play, I’d much rather have Castillo at the plate.

        • patrick says:

Ya know what, Castillo in his last 27 at-bats has K’d 6 times and grounded into 3 double plays.

He is not a good base runner right now, he is a terrible liability with his legs.

        • Gland says:

The key is definitely “patient to a fault”. It’s like he has zero confidence right now, so he’s just trying to work a walk and not make an out. That’s where all the called third strikes are coming from.

I agree that I probably would prefer Castillo vs. Argenis if those were my options. But if Castillo is going to go 0-4 grounding out weakly to third every time, and getting loudly booed doing it, I’d rather let Argenis do the same thing.

        • zen says:

since the all-star break, castillo is hitting .188avd .208slg

i don’t hate the guy or blame him for any of the losses, but i don’t see a delgadoesce resurgence.

        • rustyjr says:

i prefer son of slappy – (arey) but i think i heard eddie c say damion is feeling better – just don’t know how much better

    • ehog says:

put me in, I’d be better

    • rustyjr says:

better yet aquayo was a middle infeilder :P

  7. nastyslider says:

Heilman has cost us wins, not won any for us!

  8. Flushing_is_Burning says:

How many leads lost by Mets’ first round picks huh, Aaron Heilman??

  9. Gina says:

That seems like a really random stat.

    • Gina says:

Also wasn’t Santana an international free agent?

      • rustyjr says:

i’m not sure gina – i know a scout had to beg bob watso to sign him – even had to take money out of his own pocket to showcase him in front of the astro’s f.o

  10. JamesK says:

do my eyes deceive me??? a post about WARP!!!

Matt, you are now among the enlightened!

  11. patrick says:

If Heilman was taken out of the mix, would the Mets win the WARP championship cup?

  12. Metfreak says:

We need to win tonight the Brewers have CC and the Phillies have Meyers going I am more concerned with the Brewers then Phillies I think the Phillies already got the east but I could be wrong

    • rustyjr says:

c.c got hit hard last time out plus he’s on short rest – i hope he doesn’t get outta the third – let their pen implode again lol

  13. rustyjr says:

hey guys anyone know who took the number down last night??

  14. FlightFromHouston says:

    FIRE OMAR

  15. It’s really too bad WARP does not equal WSW

  16. the_other_matt says:

WARP has to be the dumbest stat ever.

  17. rustyjr says:
