During an interview with WFAN today, Jerry Manuel said he will not use Johan Santana on short rest to start Saturday’s game. However, it is not impossible that he could turn to Santana in relief, though it’s very unlikely.
Instead, he will likely turn to Nelson Figueroa, Brandon Kinight or Jonathan Niese for Saturday’s start.

i’d give niese another shot – we need stokes in the pen – let figgy mop up if needed
I’m not sure about Niese…the Fishies hit the southpaws very well. I do think a guy like FIggy would do well against Florida, because as mentioned below, he has got good control of the breaking stuff, and can pitch “backwards”….Either way, I am a bit apprehensive toward the game.
hell in that case throw heilman to the wolves he wants to be a starter so bad its put up or shut up time then
The Marlins are hitting .236 vs. lefties, the 28th worst team in the majors. Which is why they might be a good match for Niese. The Cubs OTOH are one of the best teams in the majors vs. lefties so it’s no surprise they hit Niese hard.
exactly plus the marlins havent seen him yet so he might give us a strong 7 innings
I agree with you rusty, I’d go with Niese — on a short leash — and have Knight and Figgy ready to go as backups.
well free great minds think alike :)
don’t you love when people just say things without checking? :)
The marlins are pretty bad against lefties…yes it makes no sense being they are mainly right handed bats…
Should have said: “The Marlins are hitting .236 vs. lefties, the 3rd worst team in the majors.”
IOW, their BA vs. lefties is just 28th.
Whoever starts, they need a very short leash. At least the Marlins are out of it now. If they were still in it, they’d be a lot more feisty.
we said the same thing last year free and looked what happened to us though i do agree whoever pitches on sat needs to be on a short leash
Niese’s two bad outings have been against the Brewers and the Cubs.
Both of those teams mash lefties.
Niese seems to lose it all at once, so I’d have a short leash.
Sorry about that…I was thinking about the Brewers when I said that.
i go with figgy. the marlins are a young team and figgy has control over his breaking stuff.
figgy has been hit hard his last couple of outings
I hope Santana pitches for the last regular season game at Shea. he deserves it.
alsooo, I don’t think Figueroa should be the starting pitcher. Knight or Niese…but not Figgy, sorry.
g-d, no! santana needs to start game 1 of the playoffs
second that zen
This game is already giving me the creeps.
Not only will Santana not start Saturday..he probably won’t start until Wednesday.
That’s the spirit!
::waits for someone to make the 1st tee time/flight to Venezuela joke::
fmm is not here anymore nightlife he’s been put on double secret probation and subsequently banished from metsblog
btw who took down the number last nite and i hope they don’ rainout sat cuz ill be screwed lol
hey guys it looks like doc will be there on sun look at the roster for that autograph fest on the 27th
What about Brandon Knight?
i wouldn’t trust knight with carrying the rookie knapsack let alone saturdays game :P
I’d let Knight pitch, he is better than Figgy or Niese at this moment.
i saw knight at his debuet against the cards – other than a rocky first he settled down – i just don;t want to see my hopes dashed on a guy with such limited mlb experience
I think we ought to suspend the rest of the season so we can all try to fix the financial crisis.
is that you dick cheney??
Man, I was going to make a joke like this expect to delay Saturday’s game even if it wasn’t raining because I might not be able to watch it.
You’re on fire FlightFromHouston.
except*
If Johan is pitching in relief on Saturday that means we are in the playoffs so I would love Johan to pitch Sat
agreed btw way guys a little off topic how about this for our rally song – Die with your boots on by IRON MAIDEN??
and while we are at it BRING BACK THE CURLEY SHUFFLE!!!
all this talk about games in the future today are really bothering me.
all these plans change if they don’t win today, which is why they MUST win today
Let’s think about today before we think about tomorrow.
Let’s Go Mets!
Go with Brandon Knight. The reason why I say this is because he was able to get through 5 with 2 ER last night. He’s been out there a couple times now.
If it rains tomorrow though or a helpful rain day gets squeezed in there, you go right to Pelfrey on Friday. And than unfortunately probably Pedro Saturday. I’d still prefer Figgy or Knight over him. We need Stokes in the pen and his arm may not be in condition to handle a start.
