Note: Argenis Reyes tonight instead of Castillo
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 24, 2008 5:48 pm

Argenis Reyes will start at second base and bat eighth tonight instead of Luis Castillo.

Jerry Manuel, speaking with reporters about Castillo prior to tonight’s game, said:

“I wanted to give him a break from what he’s going through.  He’s not swinging the best that he has…We’ll need him at some point…I don’t know if it’s a one-day thing.  Argenis Reyes has been struggling too, but this will not hinder us defensively.”

Manuel acknowledged that the fans at Shea Stadium have been particularly hard on Castillo, though he described it as, ‘understandable,’ adding:

“You can’t hide from that…Luis is coming off a long layoff, and he’s not what he was with his timing…We have in option in Reyes that does not hurt the team, so we can do it without losing much.”

By the way, Castillo started 48 games n 2007, during which the Mets went 23-25.  In 2008, he has started 77 games, during which the Mets are 37-40.

thanks to John P for the information

To hear more from Manuel, including how he intends to handle any potential rain outs this weekend, as well as to see Kevin Burkhardt’s most recent tour of Citi Field, tune in to SNY’s Pre Game Show at 6:30 pm.

thereal86 is rejoicing!!! LOL. Hey, Reyes can’t hit either but his winning percentage is definitely much higher when he plays than Castillo’s. At this point with only 5 crucial games to play, why not take the safe bet and go with the percentages.

Yup, Castillo in September is batting .114/.311/.143 and is a defensive liability.

Castillo yesterday went 0-4 with a walk. Argenis Reyes, despite his recent struggles and his overall ineffectiveness at the plate, is quite capable of doing that; and he is an outstanding defender.

And despite the Hell Castillo is going through, he is still putting up a barely tolerable .311 OBP. You could say that knowing that he is completely ineffective when he makes contact, he is heroically gutting it through to contribute with at least a walk per game–which is not easy to do when opposing pitchers have no respect for you.

As much as I want to boo Omar Minaya by proxy through Castillo, I can’t justify booing someone who is, in his way, giving it his all.

And you’ve got to feel for the guy. This is a former All-Star. A generally overrated but nonetheless highly effective table setter for much of his career. A proud player who was in his prime, one of the 50 or so best players in the world, reduced to a shell of his former self. That must be tough to swallow, regardless of how rich you are.

Agree. I feel bad for him but we need to win games and you can’t play this game based on past performances. He was a GOOD table setter in his prime (even though he’s like what? only 32 now? ) but two bum knees later, he’s basically useless.

washed up at 33 and a millionare – i wish i was a washed up millionare second baseman at the age of 33 lol

I should have just read your post instead of posting mine.

  7. rustyjr says:

off topic guys but it looks like doc and wally will be there on sunday look at that ad on the side for the autograph signings – i just wish mookie would show – hubie too

  8. hyperion4 says:

Castillo has been terrible and signing him for four years was daft . . . but, to give the devil his due, he has a higher OBP than either Delgado or Church.

I just wish people wouldn’t personalize it so much. Minaya’s the one who gave him the deal, Castillo just signed it (wouldn’t you?). Some folks act like Castillo isn’t trying or doesn’t care. That’s crazy. Injuries have just overtaken the guy. He had some great years. He’d be better off finishing his career in a smaller market.

    • pedro4545 says:

Yea, I agree with you on that. Even though he’s been terrible this year, he seems like one guy on the team who took what happened last year very personally and genuinely wants to help this team succeed. He just doesn’t seem to be capable of doing that anymore.

    DUMP CASTILLO!

  10. matlack says:

Castilloser sits!! He needs a rest? send him to Calmwood Mental Institution, where he can undergo the Univ of Minnesota Spankalogical Protocol to get his head on straight.

I know how crappy Castillo is playing but he owns Zambrano in their short history. Castillo is 6-12 with 7 walks and 0 strikeouts against Zambrano – that translates to a .500/.684/.500. Guess Manuel isn’t going to play matchups here.
