Matthew Cerrone

Note: Shea, SNY and the Weekend
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 24, 2008 1:53 pm

The next few days are going to be busy.

Here’s a quick run down of what I know so far:

Thursday:

I will be at Shea Stadium all day tomorrow, live blogging from 1 pm through the moment they turn off the lights in the building.

I’m hoping to walk around in the afternoon, taking pictures and writing about what it’s like to be there, essentially alone, inside the stadium.  I’m quite giddy.

Friday:

The Pre Game Show will air as usual on SNY at 6:30 pm, which will be followed by the game and Post Game Show.

Saturday:

The game will air on Ch. 11 at 1 pm, and will likely be a super significant game.  There will be a Post Game Show on SNY immediately following the game.

SNY will air the 92nd Street Y forum at 7:30 pm, which features a discussion among Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling and others about Shea, which will be followed at 8:30 pm with Shea Goodbye, a documentary about the stadium from SNY.

Sunday:

SNY will begin the day’s Pre Game coverage at 11:30 am, which I am hoping to be on – but time will tell.

The game will air on SNY, after which they will return with an extended Post Game Show of the stadium’s emotional, on-field, farewell celebration.

In case you missed it, as I wrote during last night’s game, the Mets are expected to officially announce later this week the schedule of events for the farewell.

However, from what I can gather, a) the major part of the celebration will occur after the game, and b) expect to see Mike Piazza, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Robin Ventura, Edgardo Alfonzo, Darryl Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, and Jerry Koosman, as well as nearly 40 other former players.

    Nothing for Friday’s game?

  2. reyesnwright says:

Matt, this all sounds great, but have you heard anything about what the plans are if it rains? It seems quite likely that we could have rainouts every game between Thursday and Sunday.

    • GodJesusSantana says:

If the game does get rained out saturday, what will happen with GKR day? Sadly that will be my first game this year… =(

  3. Lorenzo23 says:

I would certainly welcome a rain delay. Our team needs some rest. We haven’t had an off day in a couple weeks.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

A rainout on Thursday would be OK, but nothing more than that. If the Thursday game gets rescheduled for Monday, then Pedro could be skipped, and as someone pointed out in another post, the Cubs would not send their A team. If it were us, and we had to play a meaningless game right before game 1 of the NLDS, you can bet Jerry would send the likes of A. Reyes, Evans, Cancel, Knight, Figueroa, Muniz, Marlon Anderson, etc. to play that game.

      • jamie says:

totally…give everyone a chance to catch their breaths, as well as the post-regular-season-but-not-playoffs lineup the cubs would probably field.

    • reyesnwright says:

I actually think rainout Thursday would be great for us, if we knew that it would only be Thursday. Right now we have noone scheduled to pitch on Saturday and Pedro vs Harden on Thursday- not ideal. A rainout Thursday would push Harden to the Brewers series and give us Pelfrey, Pedro and Santana for the Marlins. Also, there would be a chance that we don’t even have to make up the last game with the Cubs. Even if a game with the Cubs is necessary on Monday, the Cubs will have to fly from New York to Milwakee and back to New York on Monday and will not throw a real pitcher in that game and would likely rest their regulars. It does become a problem if Friday and Saturday are rained out as well. Then I don’t know what anyone would do except hope the Brewers lose the rest of their games. The other thing is, when it rains here it usually rains in Philly so they could have the same problem. This could end up being a very messy weekend.

If the Mets win tonight and tomorrow is rained out, and then they finish .5 behind the Phils but 1.5 ahead of the Brewers — do they play for the division Monday?

        Figeroa vs Guzman

        • ridethesnake says:

even better — imagine they are .5 behind Philly and .5 ahead of Brewers… so Monday vs Cubs they win for division, if they lose they play Tues for WC at Shea.

        • ridethesnake says:

          hang on, one more:

Phils and Brewers finish tied and Mets are half game off both.

Mets play Cubs Monday and win/lose to create 3-way tie.

Mets play Phils Tuesday afternoon to determine division winner, and the loser travels home to play Milwaukee, who has to watch the game at the airport and fly for a night game to Shea or Philly to determine WC. The winner then flies to Chicago.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Mets and Phillies get rained out Thu, Fri, and Saturday. Sunday doubleheader for both teams, then game 162 for Philly on Monday, and the Mets 161 and 162 Monday and Tuesday. After this, all 3 teams are tied. Mets play Phils Wednesday, loser plays Brewers Thursday.

Playoffs get delayed until Friday, meaning all teams have to wait 4 days.

        • ridethesnake says:

          well played

        • mets2010 says:

          philly doesnt play thursday.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I know. I was just easier to word it the way I did.

        • jamie says:

          kudos to you both

  4. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Maybe Bud Selig will step in and have the games played in an alternate stadium, like Tampa Bay :)

  5. SheaVendor says:

    Will Glavine show up?

  6. ridethesnake says:

They have to make the ceremony before Sunday’s game. If the Mets clinch Friday or Saturday, change it to after. The PR people want fans to stay all game if it is meaningless and eat concessions, but if the game means something and they lose, you will hear angry fans or empty seats.

If you make it before it fires up the crowd and they are staying anyway for the meaningful game. If they clinch before Sunday, the fans will show up early, eat your concessions, and have to sit thru Robinson Cancel batting clean-up until the ceremony.

    A win-win.

  7. BigPelf4prez says:

Seriously People, I don’t care about ceremonies if the Mets don’t make the playoffs. If they don’t make it, they should cancel them and burn shea

  8. kowalski69 says:

Matt feel free to come check me out in the Mezz tomorrow night!

  9. efaulk03 says:

  10. backinbusiness says:

    Hey guys….

    No jinxing but….

DHL just got here with my tickets.

    LETS GO METS!!!!!

  11. IAmKeithHernandez says:

Off topic, but Santana officially has the lowest ERA in the NL.

  12. Don says:

nice i was there for santana last night. will be for the russian roulette that is Pedro tomorrow night. Hope the rain holds up.

  13. efaulk03 says:

So.. are there any plans to nationally televise the pre and post game? The ticket will show the game, but after that last pitch the ticket will shut SNY off immediately.. Hoping that TBS or someone picks up the game sunday. Anyone know? Or is SNY it?

    • BlueCapsOnly says:

In 2006 when the Mets clinched the division Mlb.tv stayed on thru-out the celebration

    • BaltimoreMets says:

This is random, but when the Islanders had Al Arbour coach last year Center Ice stayed with the entire ceremony and they usually knock off just like Extra Innings does. I’m hoping Extra Innings will do the same…

    • Mike Nichols says:

TBS has picked up the game on Sunday.

      • BlueCapsOnly says:

Do you know if it is a simucast of SNY or TBS’s own people…I do not want to have to watch Skip, or is it Chip, which one is the son? Carry for Shea’s last REGULAR season game.

  14. derxmasta says:

    isnt Sundays game on ESPN?

  15. derxmasta says:

    NVM
sure they air Yankee stadiums final game
    but no respect for Shea

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Ruth did not build our house, what are you gonna do?

I’ve attended a few games this year with my cousin, Ruth, but I don’t think that’s the same thing.

  16. bkfitz says:

Are they going to rerun any of this during playoffs? I’m at college and my parents are away until monday so no one is home to record it on our DVR.

I have a slingbox but the TV it’s hooked up to has To Be Announced for every channel on the guide.

  17. dcmetsfan says:

I’m already annoyed about Saturday’s game because I won’t be able to watch it. The game is at 1, so it will be blacked out thanks to MLB and Fox’s idiotic restrictions. So, I can’t see a critically important game that could be a playoff clincher. I’m so glad I shelled out all that money for Extra Innings so as not to be able to see this.

    • mets2010 says:

game is at 3:55 i thought

      • starz31 says:

it says 1:10 on the schedule.

      • mets2010 says:

fox said they will be showing all games of importance, i think the mets, brewers and phillies and white sox twins (tentatively) are all now scheduled for 3:55 pending the outcome the rest of the week.

        • starz31 says:

what does that mean though? market to market they show games? will I be screwed watching the twins play outside of NY?

        • dcmetsfan says:

If all the games are played at 3:55, that still doesn’t help me. The Phils are playing the Nats, so the DC market will obviously be showing the Phils-Nats game (although they’d probably get more viewers by showing the Mets game, considering how low the tv ratings for the Nats are).

Now, if Fox decides to show the 1:00 games as well, sweet.

        • BaltimoreMets says:

The blackout rules are simply absurd… I hate them.

        • dcmetsfan says:

I have no problem with the actual 3:55 games being blacked out, but I really don’t understand why the 1:00 games are blacked out. That makes absolutely no sense. it’s not as though Fox ever broadcasts them. Simply absurd is right.

    • starz31 says:

ahh you and me are in similar positions.

  18. starz31 says:

What about Saturday’s game…if its 1pm doesn’t that mean it cant be on TV unless its FOX…maybe local…but mlb.tv will prolly be screwed.
