Note: The Black Magic Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 24, 2008 9:43 am

In the fifth inning last night, the Mets down 2–0, with one out and a runner on first, Johan Santana hit a weak, broken-bat ground ball toward the pitcher, which was followed in-step by the barrel-end of the bat.

The ball and bat traveled together beyond the pitcher, over the mound and in front of second base.  Cubs SS Ronny Cedeno lunged for the ball, but it hit the bouncing bat before he could reach it, allowing Santana to be safe at first.

David Wright later hit a two-run single to tie the game.

Joking with reporters after the game, Santana said, “It hit the bat twice, it should count as two hits.

According to the Daily News, Cubs manager Lou Pinella later called it, ‘Santana’s Magic Bat Trick.’

is lou being clever, and putting a twist on Santana’s Black Magic Woman, the song…man, i hope so…

…by the way, i am reading and hearing a lot of people comparing this to the black cat from 1969, which was also against the Cubs…

For more on the Black Cat, Black Bat situation, check out Filip Bondy in today’s Daily News, who concludes by writing, “This is no time to discard a four-leaf clover, or a seeing-eye bat.”

    It’s a Fleetwood Mac song.

  2. theCoop says:

Santana (the band) did cover that song though…wait, who wrote it? I’m too lazy to look it up. Anyway, the “black cat” at Shea is improper reference — that was when the Cubs were essentially eliminated from contention. But hey — that was positive for the Mets anyway, so let’s take it!!

I actually saw that game in ‘69 with the black cat…

I like this black magic bat better. It contributed to a huge play on the field that could have just been a double play.

    Still have to win games…

Looking like potential rain outs Thursday and Friday as well… Not good for this team…

    • patrick says:

The weather actually looks crappy all weekend Thursday thru Sunday. Ugh.

      • mrose says:

yea exactly…not sure how you can say possible rainouts on thur and fri, but not realize sat and sunday also, they all look crappy

        • They will obviously do whatever it takes to get these games in. Weather report in Philly is probably very similar. They may have to deal with the same stuff. Frankly, if we can skip a Chicago game, I’m all for it.

        • janss36 says:

CHC are also tentatively scheduled toplay the Astros on Monday should it matter for Houston…

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Too bad Thursday is a night game because the rain is supposed to come around then. If it was a day game, they might have been able to sneak it in.

        • ridethesnake says:

Rain out vs Cubs would be great — esp if they decide to have them play Monday if needed… Cubs would send no one to NY.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Then I guess there will be a double header on Saturday, and the final Cubs game would get moved to Monday and would only be played if necessary.

    FYI…for anyone outside NY market

Mets are on ESPN tonight. 7pm.

Howie talked about the black cat incident, but he was more focused on the ball that hit the top of the wall in 1973 when the Mets were playing the Pirates (Howie thought it was Sep 20).

Speaking of unusual circumstances…there could be massive rain this weekend. It could arrive as soon as Thursday night.

If Thursday night’s game is rained out, that would be a huge positive for the Mets’ chances:
1-It would cancel Pedro Martinez’ start (when was the last time the Mets won when he started?)
2-It would push Harden’s start until Friday against the Brewers. In the playoffs, Harden wouldn’t be scheduled to pitch until Thursday anyway, so a start on Friday would be sensible.
3-The Cubs would have to travel back to NYC to play a meaningless (for them) game on Monday, a huge inconvenience, and they would be resting everyone.

Unfortunately for the Mets, who are a longshot to make the playoffs, Friday is more likely to be rained out.

again with the superstition…nomar garciaparra must be a g-d to some of you for his at bat rituals

I am all about good luck charms and superstitions.

My new good luck charm (at least I hope it is) is my 2008 World Series Game 3 ticket.

I am carrying it around and will be taking it to Shea tonight, Friday, Saturdy and Sunday so that it become familiar with the stadium and knows it place and that it needs to be back at Shea in October!

  10. SteveHenderson9-14-80 says:

The Mets had better pray for rain Thursday:
    1) This would cancel a Pedro Martinez start, which they will lose.
    2) This would put Harden off until Friday vs. the Brewers. The Brewers would have to face Harden, Lilly, and Dempster.
    3) The Cubs would have to travel back to NYC Monday to play a meaningless game (for them), and would probably be resting everyone.

With the Mets basically a longshot to make the playoffs, this would be the luckiest thing that could happen to them.

Coincidentally, yesterday was the 100th anniversary of “Merkle’s Blunder” when Fred Merkle failed to touch second on a suppose game winning hit in a game played at the Polo Grounds between the Giants and the Cubs. Instead of the Giants winning the game, game was declared a tie and had to be replayed and the Cubs won and claimed the NL pennant by 1 game and went on to win their last WS.

Can we get some Black Magic to make Castillo and his 4 for 35 September disappear?

    • My Favorite Baseball Squadron says:

I was at the game last night and he was really hearing from the crowd, but the guy does absolutely nothing to get things going for himself.

I even proposed batting him lead off so he wouldn’t kill as many rallies. Either that or have him bunt every single time since it would force the other team to make a play and maybe a couple of those end up being thrown away.

  13. Dirtysanchez says:

That was the craziest play ive ever seen. Santanas the only player that got 2 hits in the same ab lol. Santana was all over the place and definatly lead this team. Just one of the guys that santana..

  14. CaseStreet says:

We need alot more of these kind of breaks.

  15. Furioso says:

Tonight is another “must win” ahead of a bad flashpoint tomorrow (Pedro)

    They’re still in deep trouble

  16. batbot says:

Anyway SNY could post a video of the Santana broken bat hit? I missed the game last night and had to listen on the radio.
