Note: Tie-Break Scenarios
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 24, 2008 11:46 pm

If the Mets, Phillies and Brewers end the season with the same record, the Mets and Phillies will play a one-game playoff on Monday in Philadelphia, the winner of which will win the NL East, the loser of which will play a one-game playoff with the Brewers for the Wild Card on Tuesday, which will not occur in Milwaukee.

If the Mets and Phillies tie for first place and have a better record than the Brewers, the Mets will win the NL East because of their head-to-head record, and the Phillies will get the Wild Card.

Matt please stop posting this every 3 hours. we all understand. your constant reminder is actually making it worse.

    • Hahahaha. That’s priceless. It’s literally the first time I have posted this all season. Ouch.

      • mettieboys says:

matt your my boy dont listen to these clowns. its the mets who are at fault not you. your site is great.

        • ridethesnake says:

Right. It’s been me who has posted the tie-breaking scenarios every 3 hours. Being that they are tied now, with 5 games left, seemed like a good time for a real post about it.

I can’t believe Wright swung through his MVP award last night. I tasted first place and now I am hoping we can hold on to force a Monday game vs. the Brewers.

          sigh

    • HOFMets57 says:

Correct. The 3-way tie scenario was never discussed but still a possibility. Though, after a loss like tonight, I can’t imagine ANYONE thinking about that at this point…

    • pbenti007 says:

I am disgusted to see this team blow game after game. The shame of it all is that Johan should be 22 -5 and Delgado should be the unanimous MVP. Instead we struggle every single game. I am tired of watching this pitiful pen miss the target and give up dingers. What the heck are we going to do if we actually DO make the playoffs??? The Cubs have Wood and Marmol, the Phils have Lidge, and the Dodgers have Broxton and Saito. We have nothing!!!! Omar better pony up this offseason and go for F-ROD or else we are just spinning or wheels. BULLPEN BULLPEN BULLPEN!!!!

      • domosnacks5 says:

Did the bullpen fail to hit a POP UP WITH A MAN ON THIRD AND NO OUTS IN A TIE GAME IN BOTH THE 7TH AND 9TH?!?!?!?!

I’m sorry, the pen did their job today, the hitters- specifically the #3 hitter whom we all, myself included, view as untouchable, did not.

        • Well, while it’s true DW, the offense, and Ollie deserve more blame for last night, the bullpen didn’t exactly shine either.

Plus, if you consider the season as a whole, it’s the bullpen that’s been the main culprit of this team’s failure. No contest. The offense and rotation for the most part have done their jobs while the bullpen has failed miserably.

      • m29w_12789 says:

Yes last night the hitters should have done the job and did not UGH. But in the big picture , the bullpen is a pigpen. You know what thats filled with. Looking ahead, the weather will be a factor and maybe a good one. Starters may get a rest, or shortened games and little pen needed. Looking toward next year. Yes , Posted things way ahead. Months ago I talked about this kid murphy in Binghamton. Now Looking at needs, corner outfield and pen. The Mets should reintroduce themselves to the Twins. Mike Cuddyer probably at this point has no real role. He can supply power and average. Young, Gomez and Span are locks for their outfield. Cuddyer is expendable. They are very deep in the pen. Watching their game versus Chisox, the brought in young kids who did the job. Jesse Crain could be had cheap. Now what do we have to give up ? The Twins are always looking for depth in the minors that is how they are built. Amazing no Johan and Tori Hunter and they asre still in it. Ike Davis and Havens and some lower level prospects may , yes may do the job. It probably would cost the Mets 5 players in total

    • PeretzNYC says:

What happens if the Mets and the Brewers are tied for the wild card at the end regular season?

  2. dave27 says:

Here’s the only tie-break scenario that matters – if the Mets tie anyone, Oliver “4-strong” Perez will pitch the playoff.

So let’s just forget that one, ok?

Even a pathetic, loser franchise like hte Brewers is poised to avenge last year’s collapse. But not us.

    • domosnacks5 says:

At this point, you can’t possibly pitch a Knight or whatever on Saturday. You HAVE to throw Johan on 3 days rest Saturday, and then on Sunday you HAVE to throw Ollie on 3 days rest Sunday if needed. They really don’t have a choice in the matter.

If they won tonight, it would’ve been an option to throw Santana on Sunday if need be, but now you don’t have the luxury of setting your team up for a playoff series. You have to win now, and I’m sorry, Brandon Knight on Saturday won’t cut it.

If there’s a playoff, so be it, and you throw Pedro with Pelfrey and Maine waiting to throw an inning if need be. Then, if we have a playoff and win, and we make it to a playoff series, you pitch Santana on 3 days rest again, I suppose.

      • dave27 says:

Let’s see where we are. You may be right, but Saturday – though just two games away – is way off.

        • mdemaio says:

The weather is the wildcard here…it’s basically supposed to rain from Friday through Sunday…MLB will have fun with that one…

        • ridethesnake says:

Actually, I think if they won tonight they could have been in a position to pitch Knight Saturday… and then Figeroa Sunday. That’s how huge last night’s loss was. Now I think they may have to pray for rain, or pitch Johan and OP on 3 days and then Pelf on Monday, with Johan available for two innings in the bullpen Monday on one days rest.

        • ridethesnake says:

          *if they won last night

          I feel like I haven’t slept.

  3. dancran says:

shoot me. better hope Pedro thinks this is 1999 tomorrow.

  4. NyM410 says:

Great, so you’re saying we have potentially two more excruciating, kicked in the crotch type of losses to endure before missing the playoffs?

    Super.

    • ridethesnake says:

The good news is that they got Rey Ordonez to pull down the Lincoln Mercury number to zero, and then Tuesday Tony Clark will do the double zero honor.

    • wheres.the.magic.number says:

Bingo – the most reasonable, well thought out post here in a few weeks. The way things are going, I wouldnt be surprised if we have to pitch a positional player in the 8th or 9th.

  5. Lets_Go_Mets says:

I would sign up for a 3-way tie right now.

    • dave27 says:

I wouldn’t. I want this over Sunday one way or another. Enough of this torture.

I do know the Brewers will NOT sweep the Cubs. And we will NOT sweep the Marlins. And that we handed the Phillies the East tonight as they have 3 games left with the Nationals, whose pitching only we can’t hit.

      • gomets6091 says:

funny thing about perceptions: The Phillies are 9-6 against the Nats…the Mets went 12-6 against them. So unless the Phillies sweep them, they will have finished with a worse record against a team whose pitching “only we can’t hit.”

  6. Wayneoo says:

    HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA

  7. KingWright says:

I am buying stock in Xanex tomorrow.

    • ridethesnake says:

      $700 billion

    • wheres.the.magic.number says:

Enron is a bargain; an insider friend who deals with Pres Bush tells me W believes in Enron unless youre in the oil business or your spouse owns an arms exporting company.

  8. bkfitz says:

Call me crazy, but i have a feeling we won’t be worrying about a tie breaker game.

  9. dave27 says:

Well after tomorrow we will be two back of the Phillies and one back of the Brewers. I’ve defended Pedro alot, but this lineup will eat him alive.

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

The Mets would greatly benefit from a rainout tomorrow.

    • jimyager says:

PEDRO is DONE and the game is over before it starts. Sorry the truth hurts. Pedro = Glavine

      • ridethesnake says:

he has said it is a mental thing for him — if he cant focus on this game here, he is lying

      • wheres.the.magic.number says:

not to be a downer, but I would expect more from tommy G now than big Pedro.

        • ridethesnake says:

but to be fair, the way this team is going, it comes full circle to Pedro. Five years ago we stunk, he came and made the Mets relevant again, no it slips away.

In a strange way, I am glad the season rides on his shoulder tonight. If he fails, it emphasizes the team’s demise and completes the full circle. If he steps up and wins, it is what he was brought here to do and a shot in the arm.

Closure is not exactly something to *root* for when the outcome is crappy, but when it’s also the likely outcome, you are left clinging to something.

  10. MeesesGlokmah says:

So no potential games at Miller Park? Rats. My family has been a good luck charm for the Mets whenever we are there to see them play at Miller Park. We’re 4 for 4 including the last Brewers series in Milwaukee. Not that we would have had the money for the tickets anyway.

  11. DeantheLiLc says:

Disgusting… Hey, At least we have a stable economy to cheer us up…ugh…. i feel sick.

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

      Write-in Ron Paul. :D

      • soundsoul31 says:

Lol, i think Ron Paul will win the NL wild card single handedly

      • gomets6091 says:

write-in votes get thrown out you know. Nope, your choice is between the guy who’s gonna vote yes for the $700 billion bailout or the other guy who’s gonna vote yes for the $700 billion bailout. I love the 2-party system!

  12. metsmad22 says:

tonight was the playoff game….had we won, we probably make the playoffs…..but no, we now have to count on other teams helping us, b/c there is no way we win the next 4.

  13. Church says:

I can understand losing to a pitcher like Zambrano, or whatever his name is. But we didn’t, Perez didn’t show really, and the bats were pretty weak. This organization needs to stop planning for the post season. Start putting Maine in the 8th or 9th inning.

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

Why was Maine warming up in the bottom of the 9th if he wasn’t going to be brought in?

      • Arsenal13 says:

I would take a 3 game playoff in a second..2 games for us to win 1 game i like our chances

        • Lets_Go_Mets says:

Exactly! We can’t blow them both! Right? Right??? :D

        • SantanaCYYOung says:

didn’t most people vote no if they would take a one game playoff with thebrewers?

        • yagottabelieve9 says:

that was BEFORE the worst, most heart breaking loss of the season

        • domosnacks5 says:

I really think I could count how many times I’ve read/heard the term “most heart-breaking loss this season” for this team about 15 times, no joke.

That being said, the silver lining is that we’re still in a tie for a playoff spot while having this many “heart-breaking losses”. Somehow.

We just really can’t afford another “heart-breaking loss”, or any loss really, the next 4 nights, or maybe more depending on this tropical storm.

It’s a 4 game season now gents, LET’S GO METS!

        • jimyager says:

That is teh point. They CANNOT win the BIG HEART BREAKING game. If we had won one or two of those games it changes everything now. This team chokes worse than the RED SOX used to. It just dosent matter. We are done and 09 is almost here.

  14. SantanaCYYOung says:

this will only matter if the brewers lose their remaining 4 games, cause i don’t see where the mets win another one.

making it back to back 5-12 finishes

  15. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

2007 = collapse, 2008 = relapse. I was at the game tonight and I never left Shea this disappointed in my life and I was at game 5 of the 2000 WS. This team is a total joke. if its not the starter its the bullpen if its not the bullpen its the offense if its not the offense its the defense. I mean how many times can we use the phrase “that was the worst most pathetic loss of the season”. This is a team filled with mental midgets that is afraid to win. I’ll still watch as usual but honestly gun to my head I think our season is 4 games from being over.

  16. stillbelieve says:

no one on the team has balls. especially not our so called captain david wright

    • jimyager says:

It was not DW fault, he did get the walk-in tie RBI and a hit so he did his job. The whole team failed tonight. We had chances to score and failed, Church, Castro, Beltran and Schneider did not show up at all. DW cant do it all guys. Jose had an AB with bases loaded and struke out. Then he got doubled off at first. IF he had stolen second things may have been different. The whole team is broken and needs to be fixed.

      • All DW had to do was make contact. He was in the best, least pressure situation of anyone to get a chance in that 9th inning and he came up small. He came up small in the playoffs in 2006 as well.

I’m a big DW fan. I’ve got his jersey and everything. People are so quick to jump on Beltran or Delgado for stinking it up a few weeks or months. But it is taboo for some reason at Shea to boo Wright. It’s not fair.

  17. soundsoul31 says:

Perhaps we are a Fernando Tatis, Jose Valentin, Steve Register, Orlando Hernandez, Billy Wagner, Angel Pagan, and Chip Ambres from being the NL east winners.

Seriously, grow up some of you. i rather be disappointed and believin’ to the end then be the wuss who thinks he knows the season is over all along

  18. matthew says:

Why does the Eastern division tie breaker depend on Milwaukee? That makes no sense.

If the Phillies and Mets tie, the Mets beat them more this season and take the division. End of story. Why does the Brewers record affect this??

    Can anyone explain MLB’s logic?

    • Rangwx says:

B/c baseball, unlike other, bs sports, makes you play for a playoff spot. They won’t, however, make you play to determine which team captures which spot if both qualify.

It used to be a three-game series instead of just one game, you know.

  19. metsmad22 says:

what i would like for next season:

trade beltran……..for prospects, to keep the farm system up. he is a great ballplayer but he has not been instrumental…..

we need to turn church like a piece of real estate….his value has appreciated, but after his injury i don’t trust him.

keep murphy in LF….why mess with his mojo? he was a terrible defender at 2B…..would you move bat burrell to 2B?

get Randy Winn as a salary dump for RF/CF, and switching with Fmart and Endy.

    sign Orlando Hudson…….sign Krod…..let Ollie walk……retain delgado…..re-sign pedro…..yes, re-sign him.

this not only improves some areas of need (bullpen), but restocks the farm WHILE we add free agents.

    reyes
    hudson
    murphy
    delgado
    wright
    winn
    fmart/chavez
    catcher
    pitcher

    • patrick says:

yes…lets get Hudson who has season ending wrist surgery two years running on the same wrist brilliant.

And lets all make sure we keep talking about stitching that “C” to David Wrights jersey because he is SO CLUTCH

  20. jimyager says:

How about we just forget it all. This team is crap and its not worth wasting our time or money on them. They get paid millions win or loose and we as fans get stuck holding tha bag and paying for it all. This team needs a total makeover, dump the pen, dump Delgado, dump Pedro, dump Ollie, dump Beltran Of course it depends on what we can get and who is oon the market. The team was built to win in 2006 and blew it, now, we are just a moderate contending team at best that does not have enough to make it that final step. Like the Braves for the last 13 years. GAME OVER

    • patrick says:

dump Beltran LMAO, why not throw Reyes in the mix too, just don’t dare dump on Wright.

    • darknova says:

Yeah, get rid of Beltran. How can he give up all those late leads… oh wait, he’s not part of that bullpen. He’s only putting up consistently good hitting numbers year after year for us….

The pitching staff needs to be overhauled and someone with cartelige in his knees needs to be inserted at 2B. Murphy and Evans will mature next season, Church will come around (those concussions messed him up pretty good), and we need to pick up Delgado’s option.

The offense failed, but we’re still one of the best scoring teams in the league. Last night’s debacle wouldn’t be as bad if the bullpen had saved even half the leads the offense had handed them.

    • wheres.the.magic.number says:

I agree with maybe half of these ideas. Re-sign Pedro. Absolutely – he can form the best 1-2 punch in baseball with El Duque…. lets pencil them in for 20, no we’ll be conservative – 17 wins each and about 185 IP each…. Moises will have a comeback year, (330-35-115). and stache will chip in (280-20-80) in a semi full time role. We can fortify the bullpen with Armando Benitez & Jorge Julio….. And there’s every reason to expect the teenage mutant hitting machine to put up 500 AB’s for the 1st time ever with 35 hr’s

  21. metsfanmurph says:

For the last coupe months everyone from the fans to players to coaches have used the bullpen as the scapegoat. Now don’t get me wrong the bullpen has been putrid but this teams inability to score late in games has been the main reason why they will not make the playoffs.

After Castro pathetically struck out after Church and David Arod Light chocked, I said Season Over.

  22. MetsFan4Decades says:

Sorry, I think the weather will be the big winner this weekend. Can’t wait to see how this all plays out. I’m making my head hurt trying to figure out what happens if they don’t play tonight, or tomorrow, or Sat., who pitches where, who plays where, what games might be skipped.
I’ll just wait for Matt to keep me updated- lol.

  23. mrose says:

I gotta say, I may be doubting this team right now, but I am still a fan, and some of the fans on here are pathetic…
you don’t see them winning another game??? GO WATCH SOMETHING ELSE
    unreal

    • metsfanmurph says:

Ok I think I will take your advice on that. I think Grey’s Anatomy is on tonight I have never seen that before maybe that will be good. Isn’t The Office on??? At least those shows won’t break my heart for the 1,000th time.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Couldn’t agree more. Should much much easier reading the remaining pre-game threads this weekend since 50% of this so called fan base said they were done last night…….

    • npanzeca says:

These so called “fans” are unreal. i’m as disappointed as anyone but I’m confident we will win tonight and all 3 weekend games to boot.

  24. metsfanmurph says:

I have a very good pulse on this team. I predicted the collapse last year with 15 games left. This team does not have that intangible which good teams have. Can you see this team coming back from 7-0? Can you see this team coming from behind twice and getting a walk off homer from their superstar in a must win game???

Let’s just face the facts this team does not have it. Season over.

    • npanzeca says:

Wow, you predicted the colapse last year murph? I thought Nostridomis died hundreds of years ago but I guess he still lives and posts on Metsblog.

  25. kyjelly says:

It is done over, sorry but this team is gutless for the most part.
On a happy note at least Omar and Castillo will be together for 4 more years!
Perfect timing to let this clown be extended for 4 more years??? For every one or two good moves he has made much more lousy moves.
Mets are not sure who leaked this news??? Why Omar his sorry self did .

  26. kd bart says:

People have been saying the season’s over since May on this site. Why should now be any different. The season is not over. As long as you still have a legitimate chance, it is not over. But if you want to throw in the towel now, go ahead and do so. Just don’t come around being the big fan who always believed if they do pull it out.

If you want to call me pollyannish, go ahead and do so if it makes you happy. I’ve been critical of this team all season long and I I don’t care.

This is baseball and anything can happen.

    • therealsince86 says:

As King of the Sunshiners, the season is indeed not over. However, at this point can you say that they deserve to get in?

      • gomets6091 says:

well, they swept the Brewers in September, so they deserve it more than those guys do.

Do they deserve it more than the Phillies? Sadly, I’d have to say no. But I wouldn’t lose any sleep if the Phils get swept by the Nats and somehow the Mets squeak by them.

        • therealsince86 says:

So what if they swept the Brewers a few days ago? After last nights game, how can you say they deserve it. Take the other teams out of it. Do the Mets after last nights game deserve to make the playoffs? Now if they come out and win the next 4 then maybe they do but as of right now they do not.

        • gomets6091 says:

Well, I think a team either deserves it or doesn’t deserve it based on the long haul, not on one game. You can look at last night and say they don’t deserve it, I can look at 2 nights ago and say they do. The fact is that both them and the Brewers have pretty much played like crap down the stretch. The Brewers have played crappier, hard to believe though that is, and part of that was losing all 6 games to the 2 teams they are/were fighting with (Mets & Phils). Now they are tied, and the question is which one will rebound over the next 4 days…or, at least, which one will play less crappier over the next 4 days. That’s the team that deserves to be there.

        • kd bart says:

Did the Cards deserve it two years ago after almost completely blowing the division the last week of the season only to clinch on the last Saturday with 83 wins? That team went on to win the WS.

        • therealsince86 says:

Why do you guys keep bringing up other teams? This is about the Mets. Do the Brewers deserve to get in right now? What does that matter? Ask a Brewers fan. As for the Mets if we do not get into the playoffs after last night, can you say we deserved to get in?

  27. kyjelly says:

PS The biggest tie breaker in all of this you did forget- The Mets are they are making sure there is no tie at all. How ironic that Mota gets in the playoffs.

  28. therealsince86 says:

Coming from the king of the sunshiners, if the Mets do not make the playoffs then they don’t deserve to. Last night was a heartbreaking lack of execution. By Ollie, the pen, Wright, Church and Castro, and most of all in my opinion Manuel. Don’t get me wrong I am a Manuel supporter but I think he caved under the pressure and just said well lets see what happens.

Why not play small ball when 1 run is needed?
Why not give Wright the take sign when it was CLEAR that they had every intention of walking him? Take the friggin walk. Then they walk Delgado and you have Beltran, Church, Castro with no outs and bases loaded.
Why have Ayala, who has not been lights out, pitch 2 innings? Why not use Parnell or other BP arms?
I could go on and on. Same could have been said for Willie last season. Step up and take the heat. Do something different. Have Wright come up and try a squeeze, any thing. It’s one run as sume nothing.

That being said, I have not given up. However, if we get in at this point I am not sure it will be on our own merritt but on others blunders.

    • Speaking of small ball, both Willie and Manuel are woefully adverse to it.

We have not seen one single suicide squeeze with the Mets over the last few years and I don’t think Manuel has ever attempted one as manager in his life.

Maybe last night was the time to attempt one. Murphy ain’t that slow and Manuel could have put Endy up to PH for Church.

As for Ayala, he gets pushed unnecessarily. i still can’t believe Manuel brought him in the second game of that doubleheader with the Braves with a 5-run lead and then ran him out the next day less than 24 hours later. Of course he blew the lead the next day and the Mets loss. That loss was on Manuel.

  29. Kyle Vane says:

Not for nothing, I love the blog, and I love David Wright — but yesterday’s post about Wright being clutch had to be the WORST TIMED thing EVER.

    • therealsince86 says:

Again, what does Jerry expect there. Wright is wanting so bad to be the hero there and is acting on only emotion. PUT UP THE TAKE SIGN. They were pitching around him! Take the walk and trust your team. Or hell even take the pressure off Wright and call a squeeze play. Take the heat for your player instead of expecting something different to happen.

    • cyclone says:

Looking back on the debate I had with some people on that thread, I just kind of found it ironic.

  30. LIMetfan74 says:

The worst kick in the nuts loos this season! I cant belive this team is gaging again! The ONLY gamer on this team is Johan. Nobody else wants to step up its amazing! I have no faith in Pedro tonight the question is how many runs will he give up in the first inning. I hate to say it but you dont come back from a loss like that. Opprtunity only knocks once and the Mets failed to answer. Way to go guys!

  31. rogasm says:

I really hope the Wilpons take the 4 year deal off the table from Omar.

    • Because it’s Omar’s fault the “Prince of NY” struck out with a guy on 3rd?

Please. Stop laying the blame on Omar. It is clear that this team lacks clutchness. Ryan Church pre-concussion probably knocks that runner in.

      • If the Mets had just a league average bullpen this year, instead of a real stinky pen, then they wouldn’t be in this spot to begin with.

Look at the season as a whole. The pen is the main culprit and it’s Omar’s job to give this team at least a decent pen. They ain’t even decent.

        • therealsince86 says:

True bullpen is terrible, we can debate all day as to if that is Omar’s fault. Lack of people to sign, bad decisions, holding on to prospects whatever. It’s all been debated before. Thing is we were still in great position to make the playoffs and even control our own destiny in the season with a win last night. DID WE HAVE ENOUGH TALENT TO WIN LAST NIGHTS GAME?

        • I agree that last night they should have won regardless.

Every game now till the end of the season will be put under a microscope and given undue attention.

I just hope when they dissect this year, they don’t just look at the failures of the last few weeks of the season and instead look at the season as a whole.

If they do, they don’t touch Beltran, Wright or Reyes. And they overhaul the bullpen.

Omar is responsible for relying on 3 washed up broken down guys named Pedro – Moises – and El Duque. It was clear after last year that those three cannot contribute and dont justify taking up a spot on the 24 man roster. Plus he committed to a washed up 36 yr old with bad knees.

        • therealsince86 says:

He only resigned Alou last offseason that’s it. And really is it because of Alou that we did not win last night?
Again, you keep wanting to bring these things up. However, DID WE HAVE ENOUGH TALENT TO WIN LAST NIGHTS GAME. Answer the question.

    • therealsince86 says:

Omar nor his contract had anything to do with last night. It was lack of execution by players or a manager in the right spot. Did we not have enough talent to win that game last night? LOL

  32. fortleemets says:

What is the Mets record with and without Tatis?

  33. They were as close to being in the driver’s seat while 1/2 game back as you can possibly be. What a depressing, deflating, devastating loss. Perhaps even more devastating was my 7-train ride home.

  34. fortleemets says:

Can we also talk about how amazing of a manger Lou is? After the murphy triple, the book is to walk the bases loaded. Knowing that wright is weak against righties, that beltran is a fly ball hitter, and that Church has been in a slump and generally hits the ball on the ground, Lou decided to pitch agaisnt David. Then, when Church was up, instead on playing in double play depth, he played the infield in. You have to give it to him.

    • therealsince86 says:

Umm lets not give Lou too much credit here. He was not pitching to Wright. It was clear they had NO intention of pitching to him. Wright and Manuel got Wright out not the pitcher. It would have been bases loaded no outs for Beltran if Manuel had put up the take sign.

      • kd bart says:

But I’m sure scouting indicated that Wright has a tendency to want to be the big hero in situations like that and is willing to expand his strike zone and chase bad pitches. Beltran doesn’t do that as often.

        • therealsince86 says:

Very true, which is why Manuel should have had the take sign up. He should know his own players that well.

  35. metsfanmurph says:

A take sign, a suicide squeeze, with David Arod Light up?????? Give me a break!!!!!! Wright is supposed to be our #3 hitter, the face of the organization, the Golden Boy. If you have your #3 hitter up with a man on 3rd and 0 outs you are supposed to score with a hit.

By the way Lou managed that inning brilliantly, it was almost like he has watched every Mets game this year. He knew that David Arod Light would strike out and that Church is terrible.

I would have pinch hit (ducking from stones) Castillo for Church. Church has NO chance of getting a hit right now. Castillo could have at least drawn a walk which would have given us chance to win.

    • therealsince86 says:

LOU WAS NOT PITCHING TO WRIGHT HE WAS PITCHING AROUND HIM. That was clear. Wright is still an emotional kid. He wanted nothing more than to be the hero. Jerry has to know that in that situation and give the take sign. There was no reason to stress out and swing on a 3-0 ball.

      • metsfanmurph says:

Bob Howry is not good enough to pitch around anyone. He was rattled and could not find the plate and Arod Light helped him out.

        • therealsince86 says:

As well as Manuel. Give the take sign. Know your own players. You have to know that Wright is going to try and do too much.

  36. metsfanmurph says:

After this team does collapses again Omar and he brand new 4 year contract need to break up the core of this team. The core of this team is Reyes, Wright and Beltran. Reyes is one of the most valuable players in baseball and I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. So who do you trade Wright or Beltran. Personally I would trade Wright but I don’t think it would ever happen because Wright smiles into the camera and gives all the right answers.

    • therealsince86 says:

Again when the bulllpen and constistant starters have been the major problem during both seasons why would you break up the offense.

      • kd bart says:

You don’t trade Wright. He’s just had a mediocre year with RISP. Only hitting in the .240s with a lack of power (Only 16 extra base hits in 189 ABs). Last year, he hit over .300 in those situations. The funny thing is that this year he’s had a better crew around him, well at least since July, so he’s had to be pitched to more often.

        • If they miss out on the playoffs again (by the way, this should be their third straight season of postseason baseball) , Wright and F-Mart for Roy Halladay.

Here is why the Mets would do it. First, most teams have two frontline starters. Look how the Brewers made their run in the 2nd half. Look how the Cubs did it. Look how the Red Sox do it. Oliver Perez is not worth the 15MM he is going to seek on the open market. Halladay, at 14.5MM is a much cheaper and about 150x better option. A major shakeup would be necessary after a 2nd season with this type of collapse. It will also open the door for a #3 hitter and left fielder named Manny.

Here is why Toronto would do it. Halladay is 31 yrs old and perhaps leveling off as a starter. They have tried many years to win with him, but have failed to build a team around him that has been good enough. They are losing Burnett this offseason. I think they are ready to start from scratch with a cornerstone player and top prospect.

    • Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater.

It’s the bullpen that’s the main problem. The rotation second. The offense has done their job this year.

You have 3 guys with over 100 RBIs plus Reyes. How many other teams have an offense like that?

Beltran, Wright and Reyes have to stay. And I would even pick up Delgado’s option (but no extension for him).

      • metsfanmurph says:

The bullpen has been awful in no way can I defend the bullpen but the biggest problem this team has had this season has been adding on runs. This team will score 5 runs in the first 3 innings and lose 6-5.

        • therealsince86 says:

But clearly 5 runs should win you most games.

        • murph, this team has scored the second most runs in the NL, more than Philly and behind only the Cubs.

What more do you want? Maybe you’d be happier if they held up run scoring till the later innings, putting more pressure on the starters? It doesn’t matter when you score the runs, with the exception that scoring early should actually give a team an advantage as it relaxes the starter.

        • therealsince86 says:

Have been saying it all year. Just like wins in April still count towards your total. IF we had won one more game in June then we would have a 1 game lead in stead of tied. If we had scored 1 more run in the 4th then it would have been game over in the 9th.

        • therealsince86 says:

          Ho hmmm.

Sign Krod, a 2-3 starter and a #5 starter. Offense is fine.

        • m29w_12789 says:

Unless they bring up F-Mart, a corner OF is still a problem. Even if they sign K-Rod, the rest of the pen is bad. You know just K-Rod is not the answer. They need to get the 7th, 8th inning guys, and last adecent long man as well. They need to re-sign OP as well. They need to really look at Kunz as well for one of the above slots – maybe the 7th inning. Heilman , Dirty Sanchez, Feliciano probably have seen better days. They may get some team to take a shot at Heilman as a starter. Cardinals would probably look at him at that spot

    • patrick says:

I am as sick and disgusted at Wright as anyone but trading him accomplishes nothing unless in that deal they are bringing back Bruce Sutter, Mariano Rivera, Dennis Eckersley, Goose Gossage and Hoyt Whilhem.

    • Fix the bullpen and this team will go a lot further.

If they fix the pen and the team still stumbles badly next September, then you can look at the core players. But fix the pen first.

    • npanzeca says:

You can’t be serious about trading Wright or any 3 of those players? Man the IQ on this board gets lower and lower with every loss.

      • therealsince86 says:

Agreed. Now if it’s the end of next season and we still have not performed then Omar needs to go and you can trade Beltran as his contract would be close to running out. But even then it would have to be a perfect package.

  37. SteveHenderson9-14-80 says:

Well, my predictions were pretty much on the money…

1-The Mets will lose 2 of 3 to the Braves.
2-The Mets will lose 3 of 4 to the Cubs.
3-The Mets will lose 2 of 3 to the Marlins.
4-The Mets will not win the division.
5-The Mets will not win the wildcard.

…With Pedro Martinez scheduled to pitch tonight, we can confidently say that both #1 and #2 were correct.

The only question left is whether the Mets win just one game vs. the Marlins (Santana will probably go Sunday), or two. Either way, they won’t be seeing the postseason this year.

    pennant race or not
i would be just as disappointed if not more than last year if they dont make it to the playoffs AGAIN.
    they surely have the talent
they just dont have the execution.
there are no words left to describe this team.
There are games we lose and then there are games like last night.
What does the reporter have to say now about supporting the Mets?
    They thrive off our energy?
The stadium was rocking last night in the 9th.
That was the most energetic crowd the whole year.
And how did the mets respond?
    K, groundout, K.
The second that run didnt score, the game was over. everybody went home.
    the momentum swung.
Pinella was gift wrapping this game for us.
    no marmol, no wood.
the mets dont accept gifts apparently.
phillies lose, we’ll lose too to keep pace
brewers self destruct last week, we’ll do it too, “its fun!” dw
    4 games left
    magic # = 6
    mathematically doable?
At least the mets are entertaining when they lose?
its like a movie where the bad guy wins Every time.

    • therealsince86 says:

I could have sworn that Wood was pitching?

      • derxmasta says:

        hmm.
        i guess you’re right.
but i left after the 9th.
(when the game ended with the bases loaded for the mets)
lou couldve easily brought in marmol for the 8th instead of the other guy with the name nobody can pronounce

        • szamardija (or however you spell it) has been pretty good for them. he isn’t their setup man, but he has pitched well. i would imagine marmol will close tonight if necessary. he pitched on monday, so lou gave him 2 days off. plus, i don’t think lou was happy with his performance.
