The Mets lost to the Cubs by the score of 9 to 6 in 10 innings tonight at Shea Stadium.
For a recap, boxscore and stats, click here.
I’m beginning to get sick to my stomach, and I
think it’s from motion sickness. Seriously, I am emotionally dizzy, having been put through way, way too many twists and turns this season, and tonight’s game was no different.
In five innings, the Mets left 10 men on base. They had a lead-off walk in the fifth, and didn’t score with the top of the order at the plate. They got a lead-off walk in the sixth, and didn’t score. They had runners on first and third with nobody out in the seventh, and they didn’t score because of Derek Lee’s glove. They scored a run in the eighth, thanks to a walk, but left the bases loaded. They got a lead-off triple in the ninth from Daniel Murphy, and, again, they didn’t score as David Wright, who needed to just hit a fly ball, struck out, while Ryan Church popped out and Ramon Castro struck out to end the inning.
Frankly, if the Mets do not make the post-season, get ready to point to that ninth inning over and over and over again.
Anyway, add all of that to Oliver Perez, who wasted an early 5 to 1 lead; Duaner Sanchez, who needed just two pitches to let the game get tied; and a sporadic bullpen, which may as well have a ticking time bomb for a logo on their hat; and, despite Carlos Delgado’s grand slam, you get a long, drawn out, emotional, disappointing loss – all on a night when the Phillies lost as well, meaning the Mets could have been tied in the loss column for first place in the National League East.
Instead, they remain one loss back of the Phillies, and tied with the Brewers for the Wild Card lead.
There are four games left in the season, and, basically, there is as good of a chance that the Mets win the division as there is that they’ll win the Wild Card as there is that they’ll win nothing and be home for October for the second-straight season.
In other words, the roller coaster continues. I’m done worrying, though. I’m done analyzing, I’m done feeling good one day, bad the the next – now, I am only holding on for dear life, as I hope to see this team keep pushing hard towards the finish the line.
The Mets conclude their four-game series with the Cubs tomorrow at Shea Stadium, starting at 7 pm, with Pedro Martinez (5-6, 5.50 ERA) taking on Rich Harden (5-1, 1.66 ERA).

Brutal. Just BRUTAL.
I no longer believe.
What a joke.
C’mon guys, team needs us more than ever, they played their hearts out tonight. Rock them tommorrow, take 2 outta 3 from marlins and we’re golden.
I am praying for rain. Maybe the Brewers will find a way to lose 4 in a row while we sit idle.
More like they played until our hearts were rippedo ut.
*ripped out.
You see what condition I’m in?!
My soul hurts.
inexcusable. in-excusa-ble. how you can not score with nobody out and man on third in the bot of the 9th in a tie game is completely iexcusable. esp with the heart of the ine-up. pathetic effort. don’t even deserve to be in the playoffs.
After last nights nightmare, I am at a lose for words. I am not giving up on the METS, but when you feel so pissed off after watching another one get away that they should have had, it is really unhealthy and unncessary.
So, again, I will have to hear the wrath of those Stupid Yankee Fans rub it in once more after this disgraceful defeat. Yeah, they are not in it but guess what, if we don’t make it past the season, post season and win the WS, They will taunt us, for another year. You all know I’m right on this one.
SO, COME’ON GUYS, METS, I’M TALKING TO YOU, LET’S WAKE THE HELL UP AND SHOW EVERYONE WE WANT THIS BAD AND WIN THE LAST 4 GAMES AND MOVE ON!!!! IT IS THE LEAST YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR FANS, IT FACT, YOU OWE IT TO US. THERE HAS TO BE A POINT WHEN YOU HAVE TO JUST SAY F* IT AND JUST GETTER DONE. NO MORE EXCUSES, NO MORE HAND HOLDING, NO MORE BS. NOW IS THE TIME. IF YOU CANNOT PAST THE REGULAR SEASON IN THE LAST FEW DAYS, THEN WE DO NOT BELONG IN THE POST SEASON, SADLY TO SAY, AND YOU WILL ONCE AGAIN HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE DISGRACE FOR ANOTHER YEAR.
LET’S SURPRISE EVERYONE AND GIVE THE DOUBTERS SOMETHING TO CHEW ON FOR A WHILE…….
LET’S GO METS, LET’S GO METS, LET’S GO METS
What happens if the Mets are tied with the Brewers for the wild card at the end of the season?
this was one of the most pathetic offensive games i have ever seen….in my life….no excuses at all for this one
im honestly starting to hate being a mets fan. all it is is disappointment after disappointment. the one day the bullpen isn’t an absolute disgrace we can’t hit the damn bat. im honestly nauseous…honestly. im sorry to say this but team is not good
so stop being a mets fan then… if a loss makes you this emotional I think there are bigger issues at play here!
It was a bad showing, but “this team is not good” is an overreaction. They are just underperforming to an epic extent. “Not good” teams finish in last place or below 500.
That is by far, the worst loss, in mets history.
Please, lets not be so dramatic, its hardly the worse loss in team history.
That goes to game 6 of the 1999 NLCS.
Nothing’s worse than that.
Not Game 7 of 2006 NLCS? Or 2007 season finale?
Game 4 of the 1988 NLCS. Up 2-1 in games. Up by two in the ninth with Gooden on the mound and he gives up a two run two out homer to Sciosa to tie it. Mets had bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth and don’t score. Lose in 12. Lose the series in 7.
The 2007 season finale was not a game that was given away. They got beat plain and simple. Game 7 of the NLCS was pretty bad however.
Game 4 of 88 NLCS. That’s what immediately jumped into my mind. I also remember a late Sept. game in ‘87 in which Roger McDowell gave up a game-winning homer to Terry Pendleton that iced that divisional race.
But I think we get caught up in the idea that the entire season is decided this week. The season is 162 games long. Think of Wagner’s 6 blown saves (or is it 7?) Or squandered April games. With a few of those wins in pocket, this would all be moot.
It’s like blaming the guy who made the last out of the game for a loss. What about the 26 outs that came before?
But I still have faith. Not hope, exactly, but faith. In a twisted way, pennant races are fun. At least we’re in the thick of it and not mathematically eliminated. (cough*Yankees*cough).
PLEASE….GIVE ME A BREAK!
terrible, i cant believe it. a win today and they win the division now…. i dont even have words to say. terrible. a little league team would hit a sac fly.
Aren’t we all thrilled that Omar got a 4 year extension for being the architect of these back-to-back abortions of seasons?
good point, man. unreal. this is as dysfunctional a franchise as it gets. omar deserved that extension as much as i did.
this is so far from being as dysfunctional an organization as it gets. You want dysfunctional, look at the Pirates, the Royals, the Nationals, or the Orioles.
Bye Bye Ollie, hope you and Boras find someone stupid enough to pay you big bucks. Nice job tonight.
i saved studying and writing a paper till the game was over. now im not going to be able to concentrate
I can’t do this anymore
This team just doesn’t get it. No desire to win a big game. I guarantee you the Phillies would have gotten that run in. The Cubs got their runs in, and that is why the Cubs are a good team and are going to the playoffs. They blew a huge chance tonight, just like they’ve been blowing huge chances all year. Put a fork in this team, they are done.
LOL, we’re still tied for the wild card and only 1.5 games out of first. Stop being over dramatic. When we don’t make the playoffs, then we are done.
Matt I think you have “roller coaster” confused with “falling off a cliff.”
Honest mistake, I’m sure.
i just puked blue and orange
the wilpons bleed dodger blue. thru and thru.
1951 Dodger blue.
i posted this in the pregame, not sure if anyone saw it cuz it was just a few minutes ago, anyway, here goes:
once again i’ll say that this is a team made up of mentally weak players. in any extreme situation, one that is tough and difficult, one that will be very hard to handle pressure and one that is extremely physically and mentally demanding, the only people that can handle these types of situations are people who are mentally tough. this is what they train people to be like in the military, and in competitve wrestling (they are VERY similar). these types of people are winners. the mets, have a team of just the opposite. there are many very talented players in the skill of baseball, but none are mentally tough, and none are winners. i hate to say this, but guys like jeter, they have that winning edge. the mets, we just don’t have it. therefore, a collection of players who don’t have that edge will always end up a losing team in tough situations. and unless a LARGE number of players on this team are not gone next year, it will continue to be the same year after year after year.
Agreed. On point.
So you are a shrink and know whats inside peoples heads?
no genius, it’s obvious as hell to anyone who has a brain that when you watch this team, you can just see that they are a mentally weak bunch. just like everyone on the planet has been saying for all of 07′ and the beginning of 08′ how this team “looked dead and uninspired.” that my friend is a team of mentally weak players. i’m not a shrink but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist, OR a shrink to notice the obvious!
Excellent post. You could even see signs of this in 2006.
In hindsight I guess you have to walk aramis in that situation it cost them two more runs. that falls on jerry, look at what pinella did by walking delgado and beltran. probably if he hadnt the cubs lose.
I would ahve loved to see pinellas press conf if he was in jerrys shoes.
no. just flat out no, NOOO! wright needs to get that run in. no questions asked. a man on 3rd with no one out… plain and simple. you cannot strike out. plain and f**kin simple. give me a weak grounder and force a tight play at the plate. you just flat out cannot strike out like that. i dont care if they trade wright next year or reyes or both. these players cannot get it done, so if we need to get rid of them then so be it. f**k the “core of the team”. wright, reyes, and beltran are not gritty, winning players like most of the players on philly. these guys cannot and will not get it done, so if omar wants to clean house i’m behind him
Stupid.
These same players won you games before.
Wright is primarily to blame for losing this one.
He’s still a great player; let’s hope he’s learned from his mistakes.
i.e. If they are going to walk you, let them walk you.
i was at the game and couldnt believe it when they pitched to wright….i thought to myself they always walk the bases loaded for the force at home with a runner on third and no one out….pinella dissed david and then wright strikes out…all he needed was a freakin fly ball…maybe lou just wants to get to the hotel…whatever…my head hurts because of a freakin baseball team…but its still not as bad as game 4 of the 88 nlcs…THAT WAS THE WORST…
I mean seriously — how many more games can just the fan base take like this? And yet ANOTHER entire season where all we’ll hear about from the media is “collapse, collapse, collapse.”
A part of me is readying myself for post-Mets life where I can watch primetime television, enjoy Saturday and Sunday afternoon and worry about how the Republicans are going to steal the election this time…
church grounded out and castro struck out in the ninth to end it just thought id fix that
And to top it off, Rich Harden is going for the Cubs tomorrow while we throw out Pedro’s shadow.
i officially hate this team
a five and a half ERA vs a sub 2.
Matt, you said doc might be at shea on sunday… could he also pitch on thursday?
put tomorrows game in the loss column
We will win tomorrow.
give me some of what you are having! there is a ZERO% chance the mets win tomorrow! you can put THAT in the books!
yup, 0%, just like when Brandon Knight started after the 3-game losing streak, right?
David Wright,
You are a great guy. You have enormous talent. I want you to succeed. I own your jersey and wear it proudly at Shea and on the road.
But, David, THE HONEYMOON IS OVER.
Are you serious?
I love David Wright, but he’s booed before his first AB tomorrow, it’s deserved.
It is deserved. Dave’s failure was a failure of character. He wanted to end the game with style rather than battle the pitcher pitch by pitch in accordance with the situation.
Sometimes, a pitcher will strike you out. It happens, but Dave put his glory over what was best for the team.
His whiff was the season. Let’s hope he learns from it.
(As for Ryan Church, it’s come to the point where nothing less than total futility is expected.) Rather than 3 automatic outs in a lineup, it’s four.
I think Shea may get torn down a little earlier than planned.
might as well destroy it now with the whole team in it
Is anybody really surprised by this outcome? The Mets haven’t won a big game in weeks. They’ve been doing this all year. Not sure why anybody is shocked that they would blow a game like this.
Ugliest loss in a long string of ugly losses….
I’m as pissed off as the rest of you. I wanted this just as much as the rest of you.
But even if this is the final nail in the coffin this year – I can’t believe some of the posts on the game thread. Calling for people to die? Actually demanding it? Really?
The epitome of a sore loser the likes of which I haven’t run across since I was a kid. This isn’t Shangri-La, it’s a frigging pennant race. Someone is gonna win, someone is gonna lose. And sh*t, it’s looking like the loser might be us.
But man, why even bother if you’re not gonna be behind your team of choice? Isn’t that the definition of ‘front runner’?????
O.K., getting off my soapbox now.
Well spoken, I agree totally. I sometimes think most who post here are 10 years old.
Whoever is calling for someone’s death is a retard. Haven’t read that comment yet, but that is just dumb.
But this shouldn’t be a pennant race – this should have been locked up weeks ago. Instead, we have two teams fighting to see who can backpedal away from the finish line slowest.
That’s a weird way to describe it, but it’s totally on point. Who wants it less? Right now, it’s the Mets.
‘Instead, we have two teams fighting to see who can backpedal away from the finish line slowest.’
Truer words have not been spoken. That is exactly what we appear to be witnessing. And I am so damn pissed the Mets cannot just get their act together and get it done.
no one should die.
someone should have grown a s@c though
The thing that annoys me is that espn and everyone else is saying the mets are collapsing again. thats just not true. they havent been in first place all that much this year. while they aren’t really coming through in the clutch or any situation in general lately, they’re hardly collapsing.
I do agree with you. Some of the posts tend to get a little extreme but it’s no worse than you read on some of the political blogs. I worry at times about the internet’s generation’s culture.
BTW there is one thing you cannot call a Mets fan and that is a “front runner.” A “front runner” would definitely root for the Yankees.
Santana. Pain. Then a weekend of rain?
the mets just elimanted themselves from postseason play
although what would be the point anyway of going to chicago to do this all over again facing their full team and best relievers.
this was the mets 08 playoffs hope everyone enjoyed.
4 must win games coming up with martinez and niese
remaining faitful to this team is like staying with a girlfriend that cheats on you.
first and last post on this great site keep up the good work.
25 years of mets fandom.. im done
lets go marlins
Remember, we swept the Cardinals in 06 with ease in September, and jumped for joy when we had to face them in the NLCS.
See ya!! We don’t need “fans” like you.
Enjoy Oct Npanzeca!
i can’t blame you, man. goodluck with the marlins bro.
Get lost, loser.
I been saying “I still believe in this team” all year. But now I really don’t know anymore what to believe. The only thing that makes this worse for me is the fact that I live in an area surrounded by Brewers and Cubs fans.
If they don’t make it, it’s because they truly didn’t deserve it. I can live with that.
pedro vs. harden…HAHAHAHAHAHA!
should the mets even show up?
Harden has half Pedro’s ERA. HALF!
So, to answer your question, no.
Because nothing unexpected ever happen in baseball.
*happens
It’s really hard to root against Milwaukee. They deserve it more than this team. And I hate to say it, but so do the Phillies.
Well, I am a die hard fan, like the most of us on this site and I cannot tell you how absolutely disgusted I was watching this game tonight. I regret saying this and I feel horrible about it but I honestly, right after Wright struck out in the 9th, knew, deep down that they were going to get out of the inning without scoring and go on to lose the game. Especially how the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th innings all played out beforehand. It’s sad, Gary made a comment on TV about how the stadium became quiet… I feel like everyone had that same horrible feeling, the feeling of doubt, the sour taste still lingers. I have not felt, throughout the course of this season that the black cloud of “the collapse” hung above their heads until tonight. This was the worst loss I have seen since Kenny Rogers walked in the winning run against the braves years in 99. I honestly dont think they can bounce back after this one, and this is all coming from a fan who has always been 100% optimistic. I really dont know what there is to say about it.
if the mets dont make the postseason DO NOT support them next year. boycott 2009.
See ya!! We don’t need you.
If they don’t make the playoffs, how bad is the Shea farewell celebration going to be?
This game just killed me emotionally. I don’t know how in the world we Mets fans deal with this crap game after game. Just brutal in every way. Say what you will about the bullpen, but when an offense full of talent can’t hit with risp, what do we expect?
I don’t know what is going to happen the next four games but this is just tough to watch. When Murphy led off with a triple, I foolishly thought we would win. Should have known with these unclutch batters it wouldn’t happen.
Btw, has anyone seen Ryan Church? He’s just awful. Way to step up Perez.
Keep the faith Mets “fans,” season is no where near over.
its actually over in 4 days
haha nice call
The rain may drag it out longer.
haha
this game is on david wright
end of story
So David made all 3 outs in the 9th? I didn’t see that.
u r really, really, really lacking a brain. npanzeca, please stop responding to people’s posts. its really annoying man.
Annoying how? Because I’m pointing out how silly these people are? I’ll reply as long as there is a reply button.
u r an idiot.
Keep it up npanzeca, EVERY post of yours is spot on, and the 15 or 20 sane grown up fans here appreciate them all.
actually, enough, you are an idiot. David Wright only made one out in the 9th. He deserves precisely 33 of the blame for that one situation, of many, that cost tonight’s game.
You are also a typical fair weather fan because if they win the baseball game tomorrow you’ll be going crazy. calm down son. breathe.
Fans feel entitled to success because they’re paying to watch while the players are getting paid to play. It’s ridiculous, stop.
npanzeca…a triple in the bottom of the 9th..0out..tied game..phillies lost…you got to get that run in…no excuses for that.
Your pathetic apologizing for everything about David Wright is nauseating, he totally, completely and utterly failed in a TEE-SPOT toniight.
Sorry you need to weep into your $200 Authentic Jersey
So did Ryan Church (multiple times) and Ramon Castro…
Last I checked, Church and Castro weren’t the golden boy faces of the franchise being pushed for MVP and to be captain…
Patrick, I knocked you today for knocking Wright and I APOLOGIZE. Tonight’s AB was a “men from the boys” AB, and he came down decidedly on the “boy” side.
I love these guys (like “npanzeca”) who coast from post to post lashing out at anything negative. Deal with it, guy. We’re all pissed, but there’s no denying what we saw — a humongous choke by Captain “VORP”.
That’s right PAtrick, let him have it. This was all David Wright’s fault. That’s very intelligent to think something so idiotic.
it was not ALL davids fault but he definatly is one of the reasons we lost. Our rbi hitter cannot get a sac fly or a ground ball or a base hit to WIN THE GAME….he is not the only person to blame here but he is one of them
HAHAHAHA…..Captain VORP
That at bat by Wright in the 9th would have surprised me had I not seen it about 25 other times during the season. But according to Gina and Metslv31 or whoever, my memory is flawed or my television set is broken.
Whatever. Runner on 3rd and less than 1 out, I knew exactly what to expect from David Wright, and unfortunately, he did not disappoint. David Wright the hitter has been replaced by David Wright the slugger.
Captain VORP is hilarious…
This season has been 2 months of joy and approaching 4 months of utter pain and agony. As Mets fans we don’t deserve what has happened the last two seasons. This game was one of the most agonizing painful games I’ve ever watched. I have tix for tomorrow and I don’t want to go. Add in the weather and Pedro pitching to save the mets lives…I just want it to end because this is just too much to take.
Untrue…..some of you richly deserve it.
Npacenza, TRS86 for a few starters
5-1 lead, lead-off triple in 9th….squandered both, and with that we’ll be watching in October. But hey, Omar got an extension, yayyyyyyy
Omar pitched and was Golden Boy Child David Wright in the 9th up with a runner on third and nobody out? REALLY? What news.
Is that the only thing you can say? The “Golden Boy” fails, Wright chokes, Wright’s a loser, bla bla bla…
Look at the whole team for once.
Is the only thing you can do, is defend your favorite player whose jersey you wear, everywhere possible on the internet?
Omar isn’t the reason we lost, although FOR THE LOVE OF GOD why didn’t get get any bullpen help before or even after the deadline. I mean, seriously?!
This team has all the talent in the world, but what it comes down to is execution, and they are the absolute worst when it counts.
We don’t need to beef up the bullpen. What we really need is someone who knows how to perform the Heimlich.
IF the mets do lose and right now as I figure it might be as hard for them to miss the playoffs as make the playoffs (remember the brewers have 3 with the cubbies yet.) if minaya wants to earn that contract he’s gotta make some moves in the offseason. The wilpons will have to fill EBBETS 2.0 and to do so they they’ll have to get people to come out, so the only way to do it is to spend the money in the offseason.
no more ollie, castillo, pedo, and alou
bring in a solid 3/4 starter
give niese, knight, and stokes a spring training tryout for the 5th spot
new left fielder
let one of the young guns play second
overhaul the bullpen
and tell wright its ok to take ball four.
can someone email me if the mets make the postseason?
Cerrone, you’re done worrying and analyzing. I’m done watching and rooting.
This team doesn’t deserve fans.
And whoever said it above was dead on….David Wright, the honeymoon is over bud.
So are we going to give David Wright that $200 million dollar contract when its time to renew? You know that is what he’s going to demand. Lets see… $200,000,000 just for the right to watch him choke time and time again. GO ASK YANKEE FANS HOW THAT FEELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You Wright bashers are simply amazing. 123 RBI’s and Gold Glove 3rd base just isn’t enough. So he made an out in the 9th, I guess its his fault that Church and Castro made outs as well?
and Wright apologists are no better, no one was asking for a homerun there, just a meager flyball, even a weakly hit grounder in the hole.
put your expensive mlb authentic apparel jersey aside a minute, breath, admit reality and know it is okay…you can be down on the nice looking white guy too.
Patrick, I hope you finally get to kiss a girl at your junior prom next year so you will stop hating Wright so much.
Kingman, I have to join Patrick on this one, at least for an evening. That wasn’t one of those “good Major Leaguers fail 70% of time” moments. He had a 3-0 count with a man on third and no one out, bottom nine, tie game, crowd behind him, with a chance to hold a lead in the Wild Card and pull even in the loss column for the division, five games before the season comes to a close. Virtually anything other than a weak grounder, a pop-up, or a strikeout does the trick. Most Major Leaguers, with a 3-0 count, should be able to get that run in — or at least take a walk — 60% of the time, easy. For your superstar, in a game like that, he just HAS to come through. He has to. There’s really no excuse. He’s been a great, great player for us, but an MVP, in a game of this magnitude, gets that run home every single time.
TMU, I really do respect your opinion and input, but don’t you think most of the anti-Wright bashing is counterproductive, emotional scapegoating?
Are we even in position to be in the postseason without his year?
He is a great player, and has had success in past years with RISP and most likely will in the future. Clearly he is trying to do too much, but without his hit last night, we would be in even worse shape possibly.
And TMU I respectfully also must add that NO ONE, not Pujols, not Aaron, not the Babe “gets that run home every single time.”
Yes, most of it is venting, but it is frustrating to have a team of great hitters who seem to wilt under the hot lights. Reyes last September, and now Wright. And really, that wasn’t failing to get a hit. That was dangerously close — not there, but dangerously close — to a . . . a. . . . well, I’ll say it: A Buckner.
And Kingman, a lot of those great hitters would walk, sure — that wouldn’t get the run in. I just cannot imagine Pujols failing in that situation. Maybe the flyball wouldn’t be quite deep enough, maybe there would be an “at ‘em” ball, a great defensive play, etc., but striking out???
I agree 100%, this is unbelieably frustrating and crazy. It is. I agree 100%.
I do not know how to solve this enigma of a team, as it seems like every facet of the team has its turn to let us down. But it seems like focusing the anger on Wright, probably the greatest offensive player this team has produced in its history, is misguided.
Another starting pitcher we can rely on, and two reliable bullpen arms, and we would very possibly watch Wright change from the idiotic ARod Jr tag into the MVP.
And I agree TMU that while it is hard to imagine Pujols failing in key spots, he does, as does every MVP. We don’t see Pujols a fraction of how often as we see Wright. Seeing Wright every single day after the collapse of 2007 and the as-yet-unsettled-but-disappointing-so-far 2008 dramatically emphasizes his failures I think…we see EVERY time he fails, and we want to win so bad, and Wright does SO much good, that I think we tend to overdramatize his failures.
Well, there is plenty of blame to go around, and you’re right that we don’t want to start treating our generational talent the way the Yankees treated theirs (although theirs is pathologically narcissistic tabloid fodder who supposedly has been brainwashed by Madonna.) All the same, fans will be fans, and the guy choked big time — hugely. I think he’s not the “leader” yet that Matt thinks he is. I think he’s still the “kid brother”, and somehow, in some way, that could possibly affect his ability to take charge.
Or, maybe he just had a lousy AB. . . . .
“I think he’s not the “leader” yet that Matt thinks he is. I think he’s still the “kid brother”, and somehow, in some way, that could possibly affect his ability to take charge.”
I agree with this very much. He is still VERY young, and not everyone can be Pujols. I just think trading him is not an option, and with more support around him we will eventually see a much better team than 2007 and 2008.
I am done for the night, and thanks for the debate TMU. I am glad it is not exclusively negative ridiculousness on here.
And I LOVE the last sentence of your post….very good!
Wright even admits that despite the 123 rbis , he really hasn’t had that great a season. He’s hit under .250 with runners in scoring position. Last year, he hit over .300. He’s had a lot more opportunities this year with men in scoring position. Last year, he had a little under 160 ABs with runners in scoring position. This year, 190 already. If he’d hit .300 with RISP this season, he’d have upwards of 140-150 rbis. Hell, he’s had plenty of opportunities where he didn’t even need a hit to get a run in and failed.
Again, is Church the “MVP” candidate? Is Castro the face of the franchise? Are either of them being spoken about as being a future captain?
Is your defense of Wright “he’s no worse than 2 other inferior players”?
Good job. You dam him w/ faint praise
Ryan Howard gets that run home. There’s your REAL MVP
that’s 6 years down the road…
yes I know, that wasn’t the question…..
Mets better remember this game when they consider extending Oliver Perez.
Let him walk, he’ll be someone else’s EXPENSIVE problem…..
Agreed.
Until tonight I wanted them to sign Ollie. Now….well, I honestly believe this might be as good as you’re ever gonna get with Perez. At 27, if he can’t find that consistency, don’t know if he ever will.
Agree 100%…Terrible job from “big game” Ollie. I think he will always be what he is…ace type talent with a joker’s head. Let him go.
Wright is the biggest fraud in baseball
AMEN!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!! You see dead people too!!
i found it hillarious that omars four year extension was leaked before the sason ended. it is just another reminder on how the mets FO has no f’ing clue. the mets deserve omar.
I still have the “gotta believe” attitude, but that game has me switching back and forth between coffee and whiskey.
All I can think is either:
a) God hates the Mets
or
b) The Mets and Brewers are destined to play a one game choke off.
or
c) The Cubs we’re destined to kill the Mets playoff hopes after 1969
Of course, after seeing the Brewers today, are they really a choke team? I can tell myself that, but I am just making myself feel better. They’ve looked great lately, and they have scored where the Mets have not, end of story.
It’s revenge for Victor Diaz and Craig I can’t remember his last name in 2004.
Brazell
They scored 4 runs on 2 hits tonight. I believe it had more to do with lousy Pirate pitching.
Matt, you don’t need that pizza to keep you awake tonight.
THIS…. WAS….. ROUGH.
brewers get to face ted lilly and jason marquis and miss harden’s start
We lost to Marquis.
after this series, pinella would rather see the mets then the brewers (wouldnt you?) so he’s gonna be going full blast to keep sabathia and sheets out of the postseason (reguardless of sheets current health) and the brewers already threw there big dog on short rest. if he’s going to pitch saturday that would be 3 starts in a span of 9 days. against a cubs team who doesnt want to see the brewers make it anyway. thats what ill use to get some sleep tonight
I beg of some of you, don’t post comments after tough losses. You post some of the stupidiest comments I’ve ever read.
as we beg you, not to come on an post your sugar coated no worries everything with be fairy tale and sugar treats fun to eat.
Point to a post tonight where I’ve sugar coated it? At least, I don’t come on here and blame the loss on Omar.
You guys are just the worst fans. Yes, it was a bad loss. Lets not forget, this game counts as much as the Wednesday game in May did. Yes, the offense let us down this game….but can you point to that many games where that happened during the 158 now played? Obviously the wright at-bat was bad and the game would have been a lot different had he walked.
However, what about his at-bat in the 3rd inning? I guess that was a bad at-bat too, huh?
Sorry, there’s May, and there’s the pressure of a pennant race. All I’ve seen is that 7 up or 1 up, they can’t hold a lead in September. You can’t win with a team that doesn’t perform in the clutch, because you can’t escape clutch situations.
If you think an AB in the 3rd inning is the same as an AB in the 9th inning of a tie game with 0 outs and the winning run on 3rd then you are dumb enough to give Luis Castillo a 4 year contract.
I actually do think every at bat is as important. Some at bats may feel more important (bottom of the 9th, etc.) but the truth of the matter is that they’re all equally important. Hitting a two run homer to put your team up 5-3 in the 3rd, and hitting a two run homer to put your team up 5-3 in the 9th are both equally as pivotal. It only FEELS more important in the 9th. See what I’m getting at?
thats not the point fort. The point is our SP did not do his job KNOWING the bullpen sux. We have spent the whole game fighting back and the BEST opportunity in the game to win…we blow it..you got to get that run in. A sack fly or a ground out to first would have been fine…..w/e i dont really care right now.
I say after tonights loss Omar should be given a 6 year contract.
LOL Good One. Give him a lifetime extension while you are at it.
I always remembered how Vinny Testerverde’s Dad couldn’t watch his sons games because of his heart, so he’d have to watch after its over and he is given the score. I think I’m going to try that myself with this team. Just check the score when its over.
Wow this one hurt…..
We have shown great resilience in light of devastating losses…this is the single worst lost this year…..i hope we can find that magic like the one we had before the allstar break…..wow…im at a lost for words…..
Hard to care anymore.
It is not worth having your guts ripped out time and again.
Until they deal Arod Jr, I’m indifferent to their winning or losing
So you wanna trade the 2nd best 3B in baseball because he’s having one bad year in the clutch?
Who do you replace him with?? Casey Blake?? Mike Lamb??
uh, Daniel Murphy, who seems to be a magnet for delivering when the pressure is on.
A little over 100 at bats, and you want to anoint him as our new 3rd baseman??
Trade David Wright, and this team finishes in 4th, guaranteed
OH NO! IF WE DEAL WRIGHT WE MAY NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!??!?!
I’m not saying Wright’s necessarily the guy who would be traded, but, you know, they would get something pretty darn good back for him. How would you replace him? Well, the guy(s) you’d get back would be a start. Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, George Sherill, and the Orioles best pitching prospects? Even that seems low, but you’re getting the idea.
Frankly, I think Wright choked mas_sively tonight, but given his hitting last September, he wouldn’t be the first guy I’d dump. He may one day outgrow his “High School Musical” persona, and he obviously has a world of talent. He’s just not a “go to” leader yet.
More like
OH NO! IF WE DEAL WRIGHT, WE WON’T EVEN BE IN CONTENTION
Someone w/ some guts would be a start
I like to call him David Arod Light
d**k….meet a**
Jonas Schwartz hit the nail on the head. Tonight was a choke job. Plain and simple.
Oh yeah and after tonight can we please put away any thoughts of resigning Oliver Perez
If that’s not a choke job, then nothing. You look up the definition og Choke Job in the dictionary and you see a team photo on the NY Mets.
can’t believe i spent money for tomorrow’s game now
while I am at it…
Do you notice mets do not use their speed late in a game.
With Reyes on 1st and D-Murph up to Bat, Reyes did not steal.
I understand it is better to have 1 out and man on 3rd, but still think he should have stolen 2nd to remove the double play chance.
Notice Theriot stole 2nd in the 10th and he is not a fraction of the basestealer that Reyes is.
The Mets have speed, but it disappears later in games.
UGH…so friggin annoyed right now.
How could they not score in the 9th.
This has Terry Pendleton hitting homer off Roger McDowell written all over it…
I need a beer
Exactly. And if Reyes had stolen second like he should, then Lee would not have been playing close to the bag holding the bag and Murphy’s hit would have gone for a double down the line. Little things my friend, little things win ball games.
That is the difference between winning teams and contending teams. Face it, this team was NOT built to win it was built to contend, thats all. we have a slim chance of getting the WC, NO chance at the division and a HUGE chance that he Marlins will once again end our playoff chances. This year it will be Pedro instead of Glavine that blows the game. We had chances to win in most innings and could not get it done, again, and the Cubs could drive in that guy from second with two outs. Thats what makes a championship team boys. And the METS do not have that. Lets hope that some changes are made and 2009 turns out different? Three years in a row of heartbreaking losses is enough for me.
I agree totally. I posted the same thing further down. Reyes HAS to steal there. That one is on Reyes and Jerry.
Exactly, except the Pendleton home run was MUCH WORSE. Right now, we’re in a tie with the Brewers. And don’t forget, the Brewers have Eric Gagne.
What really su….cks is that the Giants don’t play this weekend because of the B-week. Now, all I’m left with is these chokers and rain. Very gloomy weekend shaping up folks, very gloomly indeed.
Oh yeah, and Pedro pitching tomorrow.
tonight at least brings me to a peaceful solution to oliver……offer him 4 years at 60 million, and if he wants more, kiss him goodbye. take the draft picks. with pelfrey being a real #2, let ollie be the Texas Rangers’ ace.
Sorry but Ollie is not worth 15 million a year…. much less even five million.
LET HIM WALK! And handcuff Pedro to him.
the mets have made the same mistake that the yankees have. a championship, winning baseball team is NOT made up of great baseball players. the mets currently have a lot of great baseball players, in reyes, wright, beltran, delgado, santana. the yankees basically have an allstar team of great baseball players and always have. this is not what makes a team great. it’s the chemistry of the team, and the mentality of the team. look at the cubs…ryan theriot??? mark derosa??? ronny cedeno??? these aren’t superstar guys. look at the rays…willy aybar??? carlos pena??? gabe gross??? ALL of these players have come up HUGE for their teams in tough spots, all season long. and none are anywhere near the caliber players as reyes, wright and beltran. What does that tell you? the make up of this team is simply not that of a championship caliber team. unless the majority of them are gone, you can all expect much of the same for years to come. it breaks my heart to imagine that, but it’s the truth. sure, there are always “lucky” teams that make it to the playoffs on skill alone. but they don’t usually go very far.
next year i want to see this “all star team” disbanded…..it’s a shame we wasted an unbelievable offensive year.
wright should have take that pitch but remember church was 0 for 5 tonight and left 6 runners on base that is just awful. but tommorow is a new day and as always YA GOTTA BELIEVE
I think tomorrow is key.
Tonight blows goat balls.
But, mets are still in this….they are tied for the WC.
Mets owe the Fish a beat-down.
How about a nice sweep over the weekend (weather pending).
Key is winning tomorrow night.
One game at a time.
I am super pissed/annoyed, but, it is done/over with.
Lets go get ‘em tomorrow.
it’s over……..if we have to play a double header versus the fish, we are screwed, b/c it is IMPOSSIBLE to win both. which means another loss……and the worst part is we swept the brewers, as did philly…..they have NO BUSINESS being in the playoffs.
church carried us thru the beginning of the year and had his brain scrambled for this team…give the guy a break….
I would trade Wright for Ramirez and Marmol right now.
i thought went murphy hit that triple that it meant we were going to win the division. this is seriously painful right now.
“he made a good 3-2 pitch”
-david wright
bbaaaaaahahhahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahahaha
I like many here on this site was left speech less after this loss. I couldn’t even yell at the tv at all. I was left with a bad feeling in my body like a an out of body experience yet as stated on this site, all the opp to score and the heart of lineup at bat and no one can even produce a fly ball and then they swing at balls out of the plate area, sheesh. I hate to pick on him but since coming back, church looks lost even in the off. If jerry wants to play him cause of his def then play chavez who can lay down a bunt once in a while and won’t let those fly balls go over his head all the time. Wow, what a punch to the gut and then if any hope was there you see that Pedro is pitching tomorrow against Harden and you hope that harden doesn’t last past five inn. Ouch, when the tv showed the fans leaving in droves after the hr by ramirez. boy how sad did those players look in the dugout, what an example.
I’ve always thought that the majority of posters to this site are like Randy Quaid in Major League 2, and tonight is a shining example of that. Are you having fun, festering in all that hate and bitterness? Why bother?
I am absolutely sick to my stomach, and I can’t believe that I’m not looking forward to going to Saturday’s game, but I signed up for this pain. And this loss is well down the list people. Kenny Rogers. Terry Pendleton. Adam Wainright. Tom Glavine. Luis Vizcaino. And that’s just off the top of my head.
You blame Omar? Do you remember what it was like before Omar? Pedro, Beltran, Maine, Pelfrey, Church (Omar didn’t crack him in the head), Schneider, Johan, Tatis, Murphy…
You’re either a part of the solution or part of the problem, folks. Matt you do a terrific job, but I’ve got to get away from all this negativity. I look forward to your spring training reports.
We’re part of the problem? Last I checked, Furioso wasn’t the one who couldn’t get a run home from 3rd multiple times.
Give Omar a 6-8 year contract extension while you are at it.
Someone please keep track of who is declaring ‘they’re done’ with the Mets so we can see how many games into March09 it is when they come back.
Ugly ugly loss. You know what would make the Mets better: if we get rid of Wright and replace him with someone hitting 265 who’s not about to set the club RBI record. Aw man I’ll by that jersey.
I’m just done period. I’ve grieved for the Mets 2008 season. At this point I feel like I’m staring at the coffin somehow hoping for reanmiation.
And while Night of the Living Dead may be an appropriate titlle right now, I don’t see it happening.
buy.
who can we get rid of, and who can we bring in, to change this team?
I do remember before Omar Mex, Steve Phillips who was a joke GM got us to the NLCS in 99 and the World Series in 2000, WHEN we don’t make the playoffs it will be 3 out of 4 years under him. Yea give him an extension Wilpons, this is why the Mets are a JOKE.
it’s all over
can we count on having a better record than the brewers the next four games? i highly doubt it……tonight was our ticket to the playoffs, and we tore it up and threw it out.
1998: Mets lose last 5 to let it slip away
1999: Mets almost let it slip away, losing 8 of 9 down stretch, need to sweep Bucs and beat Reds in play-in game
2007: Mets lose 6 of last 7, slips away
2008: when you load bases with none out but score just one on a walk, then get the leadoff guy on 3rd, don’t score him, and your opponent scores on a bloop hit with 2 out…
The Force ain’t with you.
http://www.forgotten-ny.com
don’t forget ‘97, when they had an awful mid-September and dropped out of the Wild Card race. They also had a losing streak in September of 2000, although they had a big enough lead in the WC that it didn’t matter. Same with September, 2006, only replace WC with division. Going into September, 2005 they were competitive for the WC, then lost 9 of the first 10 I believe (might have been 10 of 11). Even in ‘04, they were competitive enough at the deadline to trade Kazmir, then were awful down the stretch (though that team started to fade in August). 2002 and 2003 didn’t matter, they were so bad the entire season.
So in the last 11 years, they’ve had exactly 1 good September: 2001. And even in that one, in which they were so far out and came back to make it so close, they STILL managed to break out hearts with the Armando & Brian Jordan show.
Face it, this franchise is cursed. You can’t blame Minaya, Wright and Reyes for the failures of ‘97 and ‘98 any more than you can blame Phillips, Piazza and Alfonzo for the failures of this team. They used up all the magic in 1986 it seems…
Disgusting. Almost the whole team.
David Wright is eerily A-Rodesque this season. I hope he snaps out of it after this year. He’s been more clutch in prior years, but it just seems either the pressure to bury the ghosts from last year or to be a team leader now is too much for him to bear. It’s sad to see one of my favorite players regress like this. I don’t care about compiling the stats. Just be more clutch, David. One freakin’ fly ball and they woulda won.
it’s his approach at the plate……pulling everything and a looping uppercut = more strikeouts…..
Oh, I forgot to add … fire Willie.
GKR didn’t mention this during the game, but I think a huge mis-play was Reyes not stealing 2nd base when it was 1st and 3rd in the 7th. He HAS to steal there, with Church having all kinds of trouble at the plate. I was saying it before the double play. Why is he not going? Even if he gets thrown out, there’s only one out. GKR even said he could almost walk there with that pitcher. It takes away the double play, and may even make them bring the infield in. Worst case, he gets thrown out and you have two chances to get the guy at third in. He most likely makes it, and then you have three shots to get that run in.
R also said that Reyes likely was held to keep the hole between 1st and 2nd open wider, to allow for a better chance for a base hit by Murph.
That ball just went straight to Lee’s mit. Not much you could do… except second guess a perfectly logical decision to play with the odds and improve your chances of a hit by holding the runner on first.
Guys… the Phillies have LOST two in a row to the Braves.
The Brewers have blown almost as hard as the D’backs this month.
We Have a much easier schedule that the Brewers down the stretch.
We still have a shot at the Pennant,
but even if we’re the Wild Card.
How many years in a row has the Wild Card made it to the Series?
‘07 Rocks
‘06 Cards
‘05 Astros
‘04 Red Sox
‘03 Marlins
‘02 Angels
‘01 NO WILD CARD IN SERIES
‘00 Mets
Seems like the Wild Cards got just as good a shot as anyone… no?
Have you watched this team at all in the last 2 weeks??
Nope… which team are we talking about on here?
I don’t want to trade Wright, he can have the record who cares, until he proves otherwise he is NOT CLUTCH!!! If A-Rod gets blasted for not being clutch, how come Wright can’t because they are in the same boat.
Ahh, yes, it’s the faul of bad fans.
THAT’s how the Mets are finding themselves in this position. They just had too many faithless fans.
Gay.
You don’t trade David Wright. He’s still a very good player abd the core of this team. The ninth inning at bat was just the crown on a season that wasn’t as good as it looks on paper. 120+ rbis but a season like last season, he hit over .300 with RISP, would’ve produced at least 140 rbis. To date, he’s had 20 percent more RISP ABs then he did all of last season but he’s only hiy .246 with RISP.
“He’s the core of the team”
A more compelling indictment of the guy you couldn’t ever utter.
it’s his plate approach that is the difference…..his upper-cut, looping swing, his pulling the ball, leads to more strikeouts. it leads to more homeruns, thus big RBI numbers, but it leaves holes in his swing. this is NOT the right path for wright.
Exactly. Going back to the 2006 postseason, Wright completely loses right center at the plate in big spots. He goes from a batter looking to drive the ball where it is pitched to a batter looking to jack the ball out on every pitch. Flies open and pulls off the ball.
i wish Keith was the hitting coach….talk about a guy who knew how to hit it where it’s thrown.
I remember when Keith was playing and if he was on base with Darryl coming up in a big spot, he’d point to his righ shoulder and motion to Darryl to keep his right shoulder in there and don’t fly open with your swing.
If you can’t get a runner home from third with no outs from the 7-9 innings, you DONT DESERVE to be in the playoffs. Plus we gave new life to the Brewers and Phillies, they were choking a bit themselves, and we picked them up and dusted them off.
Read below. I agree with you in that this is not a playoff caliber team (even if by luck they make it).
All this pain and suffering will very easily go away if you guys just take a deep breath and remind yourselves that……………………this team is just not a very good team, plain and simple. They are what they are. Soooooooooo………………………..knowing that they are not a very good team, then it’s a miracle we still have a chance for a wild card birth this late into the season. Enjoy these next 4 games and see what other CRAZY things happen. If they make it, then it’s gravy, if they don’t………………..well, that was expected anyway. Since I came to that conclusion about two months ago (that they are not a very good team), It’s made my life so much more stress free and I actually enjoy watching the games more since I’m not really expecting much in the first place. You guys should try it.
Defeatist talk.
I disagree w/ lowering expectations like you’re doing.
There’s something to be said for having expectations and frankly demanding the team live up to them.
You can demand all you want Furioso, it still won’t make the Mets a better team. Hey, I was all gun ho at the beginning, but being realistic and realizing a team is not as talented as you thought is not being a defeatist, it’s just being a realist. Now, do I want them to make the playoffs? of course, I’m a die hard Mets Fan since 1968 (probably longer than you’ve been alive! lol )
Do I expect them to make the playoffs……………..not really.
but when you have the top two guys in runs, 3 guys in the top ten in RBI, one in the top 5 in HR, the leader in triples and hits and 2nd in stolen bases, gold gloves at 3rd, CF, 2B (formerly), and RF, and the pitcher with the LOWEST ERA IN THE NL, you can’t help but feel you are being cheated out of what should be the best or 2nd best team in the league.
True, but a team of “Stat Builders” does not guarantee you anything, just look at the Yankees. You need much more than stats and records to win a championship. Championships aren’t won on paper or in the personal records column. You need players that are clutch in big-game situations and players that do the little things that win ball games, like……………………….ummm, let me see……………………………………….drive in a freaken runner in from third with less than 2 outs. How about tyring that for a change?
how about Ramon Martinez’s play tonight?
I am looking forward to seeing him in the starting lineup tomorrow.
ehh
Everyone was complaining about the Braves last week rolling over for the Phillies. Well they did their DAMN JOB this week by taking 2 out of 3, and we STILL couldn’t take advantage.
agreed……tonight should have been the season changer. we would have been in control of our fate for winning the division! all we would have had to do is win out! but no, we ended that hope, and breathed a sigh of relief for the phils.
I’m sure all the fans who don’t BOO the Mets, who are sunny and positive, weren’t booing the Mets tonight lol.
But Omar, the architect of this leaky ship, gets a four year extension.
I’d love to have that kind of security for failing to accomplish the objecive of my job.
Someone tell me just HOW do the come back and win a game tomorrow AFTER losing the way they did tonite? I mean is it even possible they can come back from such a soul-crushing loss?
And can someone tell me where has the Ryan Church of the first 2 months or so of the season has gone? Yes, I know, I know. The concussion.
Can someone on this team hit a freakin’ fly ball sacrifice with a man on 3rd base?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope for a rainout.
My goodness, what a disheartening game. I was on such a high after Delgado’s slam, and then bit by bit lost that high as the game was torn away from us.
Yea, can I have bosses like the Wilpons, I can screw up alot, and still keep my job no matter what.
Not only do you get to keep your job by not being fired, but you also get a pat in the back with a 4-year contract extension! LOL
Yea right lol. What a joke this franchise really is.
But it gets better tomorrow, Pedro is going which means we will be in the pen by the 5th inning.
I’ll miss the 3 games this weekend as my nephew is getting married and I will be tied up all weekend and will not have a chance to see any of the games.
Bart congratulations on your nephew getting married, I can honestly say I’m JEALOUS of the fact that you will not have a chance to see any of the games.
Boy aren’t you lucky. I’ll be home all weekend fighting myself from tuning into the Mets game.
kd, I’ve never been more jealous of a person. I hate my relatives for not getting married this weekend.
Lucky you.
This is why I have problem with ownership, I don’t like Omar but if this team made the playoffs he DESERVED an extension, couldn’t argue it. So, why did you have to make that STUPID announcement Monday or Tuesday when we haven’t locked up ANYTHING. You couldn’t wait to the end of the season to make the announcement. After tonight, ownership looks like MORONS.
Someone mentioned on SNY that they made the announcement to draw the focus away from the Mets and the 2007 collapse comparrisons.
Boy after watching tonights game that worked out really well lol.
Yeah, just beautifully! LOL. What will, they announce tomorrow? That they just extented Castillo’s contract another 6 years????
They are “True” chokers by nature and no amount of talent or season “RBI Records” is going to change that. There was a chance that last year was just a fluke, now we’re all coming to the painful realization that it wasn’t a fluke, that this is a team of chokers who put up very good season stats but that’s about it.
What better definition and example of choking than not being able to drive in runnres from 3rd with less than two outs? All that means is that they go up there gripping the bat just a “little bit” too tight and instead of welcoming the chance to drive the run in, they are just hoping and praying “Not” to screw up or strike out. That folks is what chokers do. (i hate that word choke or choker by the way, gets used way too much)
u saw it last week when wright made those errors at third, he didn’t want the ball hit to him.
i f jeter was on this team, we’d had already clinched
Yep, and you can actually see it on their faces when they walk up to the plate with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs. You can see it and you can also feel the tension. I’m old enough to remember the 1986″ team, let me tell you, that team would kill you when they had runners on 3rd and less than two outs, They went up there with a “swagger” and you copuld just see it in their faces and by their body language that they were reallt confident at the plate and they “KNEW” they were going to hit the ball hard some where. Day and Night compared to this current team, I know, I’m around for both and speak from personal experience.
Hey, guess what movie opens this weekend? CHOKE! How appropriate. David, maybe you can take Ollie, Church and Duaner with you for a little date. You should know the plot since you live it out pretty consistently.
Seriously, this is beyond ridiculous. I, like most of you, will be back tomorrow for more abuse, and again throughout the weekend, and again next year. But how can a team be so incredibly inept on such a consistent basis. If it isn’t one thing, it is another. They don’t deserve to make the playoffs, but the way the Phils and Brewers are playing, they don’t either. Unfortunately, this is just all part of being a Mets fan. I have to admit, it is very painful, but also exciting at the same time. Let’s go Mets!
Haha, nice pop culture reference.
And I’m right there with you. These past two season (and the end of 06) have been nothing but torture, and as a fan you wonder what it is exactly that you’ve done to deserve this. But the fact of the matter is that it is what it is. The heartbreak, the disappointment, all of that comes with being a Met fan. That’s what you sign on for. And if the Mets don’t make it this year, well quite frankly that’s devastating, but I’ll be right back here next year hoping they pull through. That’s what being a real fan is all about.
Let’s Go Mets!
Unfortunately you’re 100% correct. That’s what being a fan is all about. I just wish my dad had taken me to see the Pirates when I was 4 instead of the Mets, there’s no heartbreak with the Pirates,. just boring, non-emotional baseball.
Exactly. It has been said before, but think about being a Pirates fan, or a Royals fan right now. Good times there. And all these people saying “die” “get AIDS”, whatever, get some f-ing perspective. Or some counseling. It is a game, and it will always be a game. I get just as emotional as the next guy, but irrational is something else altogether.
Yep, I get worked up also and these loses do hurt, don’t get me wrong, but at the end, like you said. its a freaken game played by Millionaires who could care less about you or your personal problems. Mets winning or losing will not pay my mortgage or put my daughter through college. It’s a game folks, just a game. Now………………………..
LET”S GOP METS!!!!!! lol
what if our dads took us to see the Yankees instead? I could have been happy with 4 World Series championships before I graduated high school, or being “heartbroken” when my team doesn’t make the playoffs for the 14th straight year.
But no, my dad decided he hated me, so he raised me a Mets fan. To get back at him, I plan on doing the same to my kids one day.
How can anyone expect the mets to win the wc or division?
They have Pedro tomorrow who hasn’t won a game in i don’t know how long.
Pelfrey goes on Friday and the Mets are 0-4 in his last 4 starts.
They don’t even know who’s going on Saturday.
The Mets are NOT winning another game this season.
Its over! It was over last week, some of you just didn’t see the writing on the wall.
Well, one thing you should about baseball and sports in general (if you’re old enough to watch sports for many years),
that’s that anything can happen and what you expect to happen usually never does. Who the hell knows what’s going to happen over this weekend, I guarantee you there are going to be some surprises.
***should know***
Probably the worst game I’ve ever been to at Shea, and I was at game 7 in ‘06.
And I have tickets to Sunday’s game, but that’s just a formality. Their season actually ended tonight. It’s going to be hard to celebrate the stadium and its history knowing we’ve choked away a great opportunity to make the postseason.
This one hurt the most.
1) 7 run lead blown to the Phillies
2) Being absolutely shut down on by John Lannon and Odalis Perez back to back nights
3) Back to back nights of blowing multi run leads in the 9th to the D-Backs
4) Beltran being doubled up after Delgado lines out in the bottom of the ninth against the Nats
5) Several games taken away by Willie Harris’ web gems
6) 4 run lead blown to the Pirates
7) 3 consecutive 2-1 loses to the Padres
8) 3 run lead blown by Wagner after Pelfrey tosses a gem
9) 3 run lead blown to the Phillies in the 9th
10) Blowing a 4 run lead, coming back to tie it up. Leadoff triple to start the bottom of the 9th, followed by 3 outs and no runs…and then a loss
To me it seems most MLB teams suffer “soul crushing” losses about once or twice a year.
It seems the Mets are aiming for a good dozen or so…
I dont think i can handle watching this team in the postseason…My heart cant take it…
Boy I’m glad my memory is not as good as yours, otherwise I’d really be depressed!
If only I could forget…
I can handle watching it because with all the stuff you just listed it would be a miracle and a victory in itself if we even make te playoffs, and making the playoffs would atleast be a step in the right direction to start to forget about the disaster at the end of last season.
After taking sometime to think about it, i just can’t be pissed of at the offense even tho they should be able to get a sac fly, i really do blame all this on the bullpen, i think we lead mlb with over 20 blown saves or something like that…if it wasn’t for all that we would of already clinched our division and wouldn’t be going through this heartache. With that said Ya Gotta Believe next year we wont have some of those goof balls on the team next year.
Naa sorry this one is on the offense and Ollie Perez. Perez just can’t be given a lead, I think it’s something mental because he finds a way to start walking batters and given the lead right back, I would hate to see what he would do if he pitched in a hitters park like philly or Houston LOL, then he would really be afraid to throw strikes.
it just goes to show, no lead it safe with this team. The pitching could have been better, but we cant look at the bullpen or the starting pitching, we need to look at number 5 and number 19. I think that David Wright needs to man up. He should have 150 RBIs. Ive never seen a guy come up so small in so many big spots. We needed a fly ball in the worst way, and we let one get away from us. I have no voice left from this game. Ive never been to a game that had such a big high, to such a huge low. ‘88,99, 00, 01, 06…..they cant even come close to how this feels….oh well, let’s get up tomorrow and hope pedro pitches like he has amnesia.
Amen jay, I looked it up and wright and beltran have more runs scored than reyes cause wright had more men on than anyone cause of reyes and did not drive him in. He, wright and beltran and delgado got driven in by tatis, church, each other so their runs scored are not true representations. Reyes should have 140, at least, runs scored this year and maybe a few more wins for Mets. Tonight was just UGLY. Hope tht pedro finds his mojo cause he owes us for all the money he took and did not produce for the Mets. Step to mound Pedro, 7 innings, 1.5 runs, 2 walks, 4 k’s, 5 hits. Maybe I have been up too long to be hoping for this. Night all.
what i would like for next season:
trade beltran……..for prospects, to keep the farm system up. he is a great ballplayer but he has not been instrumental…..
we need to turn church like a piece of real estate….his value has appreciated, but after his injury i don’t trust him.
keep murphy in LF….why mess with his mojo? he was a terrible defender at 2B…..would you move bat burrell to 2B?
get Randy Winn as a salary dump for RF/CF, and switching with Fmart and Endy.
sign Orlando Hudson…….sign Krod…..let Ollie walk……retain delgado…..re-sign pedro…..yes, re-sign him.
this not only improves some areas of need (bullpen), but restocks the farm WHILE we add free agents.
reyes
hudson
murphy
delgado
wright
winn
fmart/chavez
catcher
pitcher
Are you nuts? come on now your proposal stinks… Beltran is a huge piece of the Mets and should be for a long time. look the only reason this team is struggling so bad is because of the Bull pen, did you forget that we lost Wagner and that the pen has blown somewhere like 29 saves? I agree with the sign K Rod deal but that’s about it. If we had anywhere near the relief pitching that the Cubs and the Phillies have we would have the top record in the NL period, and that’s even with jugling corner outfielders everyother day. So we need to fix the broken parts and leave the working parts alone.
Signing Hudson would be great too but did you forget that we just signed Castillo to a 4 year deal… we need to find a way to get rid of him, he has no pop he has slowed way down and is injury proned. I guess you can say he still is a hard guy to strike out but that’s about it. I would rather see Argenes Reyes out there BC he would at minimum provide what Castillo does… but Hudson would be like hitting the lotto for sure.
I’m done watching this team. I stopped going to games, and I won’t bother going to any games in 2009. The Mets organization has lost me, I will no longer support this team. I have given unbelievable support (emotional and have spent incredible money) for this team. I will no longer do it. You ask the fans to help out, and the fans respond. However, the team shows how they just lay down and die, with absolutely no remorse. When Citi Field is only 60S% full night after night, the Mets will know why. Its is only fair that fans are absolutely enraged at what this team has given back in the past 2 years. This is NYC, there are tons of things to do. Watching and supporting the Mets in 2009 will not be among those things for me. Mets, you are pathetic. Go to hell.
Question, why wasn’t Reyes trying to steel 2nd when it was 1st and 3rd no one out? The fastest dude in MLB and he stays at 1st only to get doubled off after a hard liner to Lee. Come on now if he swiped 2nd before the count went to 2 strikes Lee wouldn’t be in possition to catch that ball because he wouldn’t be holding anyone on and the Mets would have had 2 runs with a chance for more. Man we gotta get more agressive on the bases.
absolutely correct. dont know, ask reyes. or maybe luis aguayo was holding him up ;)
I was at tonight’s game and I just returned from my local bar. Need I say any more ?
some mets losses (among the many epic ones to choose from) have probably been more disheartening than this one, due to the sheer importance of the game (NLCSs, world series, season finales, u name it…). But as far as the flow of the individual game, I cannot recall a single sporting event that was harder to stomach than this one. I’m sure there have been, I just havent witnessed any
i mean, guy on third no outs, THREE INNINGS IN A ROW, and they never even get him in (in the way you expect them to too-that is, i know that scrub walked with 2 out and the bases loaded, thus ultimately setting up that final dose of pain… seriously, it felt like that secret room at the end of Orwell’s 1984)
and yes, i too have been boozin’ until now…
Sell the team Wilpons, and stick to Real Estate.
this one has to go squarely onto the offense. After the ninth inning, can’t blame the pen. They pitched 4 1/3 of 1 run ball (way better than Ollie that scrub).
and frankly, this is all on DW being way to panicky. Even a walk puts them with Beltran up 0 outs. And of course a fly ball wins it.
Even worse, if they somehow survive until monday (forget the Phils, they blew that chance) and get the brew crew in a 1 gamer, they will likely get CC on full rest.
So much for ‘Big Game Ollie’. Probably got distracted by something shiny and lost his focus. Pathetic.
Wright serisoulsy swung at ball 4 at least twice in that AB in the 9th. That was infuriating to watch.
I cant even ****ing sleep after this loss. What the hell Mets. How do you consistently fail so so much. One more loss and we are out of this thing altogether.
90 feet away with no outs. WTF
90 feet away with no outs THREE TIMES!
The ninth inning did reveal one thing. It revealed what teams have learned by scouting the Mets this season and whom they consider the more dangerous hitter in that situation, Wright or Beltran. Pinella faced the choice of walking Wright and Delgado and then facing Beltran with the bases loaded and none out or going after Wright and getting him and then walking Delgado and Beltran and facing Church with bases loaded and one out. From their scouting, they probably figured it was easier to retire Wright in that situation without the run scoring then it would be to retire Beltran. Figured he be more apt to chase the pitch then Beltran (If you watched this season, you would’ve learned that). To the point where they continue to go after him even when the count got to 3-0 and it did come to fruition. Wright chased a ball out of the strike zone on 3-2 to strike out.
That whole inning played out beautifully for Pinella. David Wright’s futile at bat in that situation didn’t shock me one bit.
The key was Wright. Everyone knows that Church has not been the same player since his second concussion and you could take your chances with him. The choice was Wright or Beltran. Who’s more dangerous in that situation?
Somebody most have shown Pinella Wright’s at bats in similar situations throughout the year and said, “Forget the stat line.”
Wright chased 3 balls out of the strike zone. They were trying to pitch around Wright and hope he did something stupid and swing at a pitchers pitch. WHY DID JERRY NOT HAVE THE TAKE SIGN UP ON 3-0 and 3-1? They were clearly NOT going to throw him a strike.
Why is Duaner Sanchez allowed to suit up?
He and Heilman should be doing something useful like pitching bp.
Since Omar got his extension, why don’t the Mets spot-start him for Pedro tonight. Then he could prove just how valuable he is to this organization.
Minaya. Four years.
After last night, that’s the only thing you can come up with? Pathetic.
Could Delgado have scored on Beltran’s single in the 8th? I was…busy at the time, so I wasn’t watching the TV, but Sutcliffe made it sound like he would have scored easily had they sent him. Just curious, b/c the post didn’t mention it and nobody in the comments has mentioned it. If he could have, we need a new 3rd base coach. He’s been too aggressive all season, and now when they desperately need a run, he gets conservative?
I think he would have scored easily. So did Gary, he totally blamed the 3B coach for f-ing up.
Keith tried to defend him a little by saying he’d have to take another look at the tape.
They got the run home via a bases loaded walk, but Delgado could have scored, and if the throw had gone home (likely), the runner could have made it to 2B.
Not the Mets could have ever singled in the winning run, but I’m just saying.
Coming from the king of the sunshiners, if the Mets do not make the playoffs then they don’t deserve to. Last night was a heartbreaking lack of execution. By Ollie, the pen, Wright, Church and Castro, and most of all in my opinion Manuel. Don’t get me wrong I am a Manuel supporter but I think he caved under the pressure and just said well lets see what happens.
Why not play small ball when 1 run is needed?
Why not give Wright the take sign when it was CLEAR that they had every intention of walking him? Take the friggin walk. Then they walk Delgado and you have Beltran, Church, Castro with no outs and bases loaded.
Why have Ayala, who has not been lights out, pitch 2 innings? Why not use Parnell or other BP arms?
I could go on and on. Same could have been said for Willie last season. Step up and take the heat. Do something different. Have Wright come up and try a squeeze, any thing. It’s one run as sume nothing.
That being said, I have not given up. However, if we get in at this point I am not sure it will be on our own merritt but on others blunders.
i havent given up either but man that one hurt real.
You may have been watching a different game but Parnell pitched for the New York Mets last night.
David Wright could have simply put the ball in play, nor was he obligated to swing at ball 4.
If it was a one-game anamoly that would be 1 thing.
But that they couldn’t get a fricking SAC FLY with a runner on 3rd w/ 0 outs three times in one game is really the story of the entire season.
For the life of me, I have never seen such a pizz-poor approach to situational hitting over the course of a season as I have with this years’ team.
THAT, even more than the bullpen, has cost them countless games.
The offense puts up pretty stats, but really- who cares. They’re stat padders is all they are.
Gimme a 3b who drives in 90 but does it when it counts, as opposed to a guy who gets 123RBI, maybe 6 or which are really meaningful.
For the eighth time this season, the Mets failed to win after taking a four-run lead, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
–
They haven’t won a game coming back from a 3 run deficit, but they blew 4 run leads 8 times.
You have GOT to be kidding me.
CHOKE
CHOKE
CHOKE
i HOPE the mets win the wild card. I want them to get a crack at the cubs (who they are proving they can beat). And I want the phillies in the nlcs. And they already proved they can beat the angels. why so doom and gloom. Its a four game season now.
FOUR GAMES! All they have to do is win these 4. The cubs dont want the brewers in the playoffs they dont wanna see sheets and sabathia. and the mets still have big pelf and santana. so its as hard to lose this thing as it is to win.
TUG WAS RIGHT
My fiance asked last night, after another heartbreaker, why I continue to put myself through this? I thought about it. I watch because I love being on that edge, the edge between utter dissapointment and pure jubilation. When the bases were loaded, the game was tied, and Delgado was up, you knew something great might happen. When Daniel Murphy led off with a triple, you thought, here it is, I am going to feel really good soon. Sometimes, however, you experience complete heartbreak. It comes with the territory. It is part of being a fan. It is what makes us better fans. It is why we keep coming back. For the chance to experience the exhiliration of winning. Pure, unadulterated joy. I survived Kenny Rogers, Yadier Molina and Tom Glavine, so I am sure I can survive 2008. People survived 1988. People survived 1973. I love the Mets and am thankful that we are in a pennant race as opposed to playing out the season. What if we win a nailbiter tonight? Ya never know. But i’ll put my Reyes jersey back on after work and watch because I want to feel good and will suffer through numerous defeats just for that one chance! LET’S GO METS!
Great post. That sums it up perfectly.
D-Rod does fit
I was as pissed at the man as everyone else cursing his name, the whole nine. Then I put disc 6 of essential games of shea in my dvd player and I’m back on board. Give me ANY night wright had like last night, and I’ll give you three great ones… (anaheim this year OFF OF K-ROD, august 07 SD bottom nine off of heath bell, AND tuesday night down 2-0 in the fifth in a must win game, the list goes on.
TUG WAS RIGHT.
Does the pot you smoke give you any bad vibes at all, or is it a completely mellow and delusion less high?
Disgusting!
No matter what happens in the last four games.
Even if the make the post season.
This has been a disgusting year.
So many horrible gut wrenching losses
Thank goodness all Mets Fans can look forward to CITI Field
This will be the Field of Dodgers dreams.
During rain delays (because there is no retractable dome) we can sit in comfortable surroundings of the Ebbets Club behind the plate or Coogan’s Landing beyond the leftfield fence and reminisce about the history of the Dodgers.
I can’t wait for Tommy Lasorda to throw out the first pitch. Magical!
Correction
“Even if they make the post season.”
