News: Maine Done For Year
By Mike Nichols - Sep 25, 2008 5:11 pm

At his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin reports Jerry Manuel told reporters John Maine will not be used for the remainder of the season.

According to Rubin, Manuel cannot in ‘good conscience’ use a pitcher who needs surgery.

Rubin also notes on Manuel’s decision on who to play in right field tonight and if Johan Santana will be able to pitch on short rest on Saturday.

They have no idea what is going on… Cost John Maine a month… Maine wanted to help…

They have wasted his time…

He can’t “in good conscience” use Maine, but he CAN bring out every other scrub in the bullpen? I’m starting to think the Mets really don’t want to make the playoffs.

Mixing apples and oranges. Maine has a bone spur, the ’scrubs’ in the BP, whether good or not, have no injury.

Nothing in this makes sense.

• John Maine will not be used the rest of the season. Manuel said it’s his decision alone, even though medical staff has cleared him. Manuel said he can’t in good conscience use a young player in a game who needs surgery. “I just don’t like anybody pitching young with anything,” Manuel said. “That’s just my hang-up.”

Then was has he rehabbed all this time, and WARMED UP yesterday????

• Manuel said he wrestled with not playing Ryan Church, but the only alternative was Endy Chavez, so in his mind there wasn’t much debate in the end. “For me, I consider Ryan as close - very close - to being one of those pillars where you play every day. I think he has that type of ability.”

“close - very close” - as in - four days left close? you lose nothing with Endy in the field, only gain. At the plate, Church has been a wreck.

• Manuel ruled out Johan Santana on short rest Saturday.

Even if we lose today and tomorrow? Prefer Figerknightese? Wow.

Jerry is even getting tight… He knows he is managing for his job here…

It’s like Coughlin in the playoffs last year… Turned out great for Tom… I like Jerry and hope it works out for him but…

But isn’t this a strange form of tight?

I’d call tight (desperate?) what the Brewers are doing, pitching CC on 3 days rest TWICE! in a week.

Jerry is managing conservatively, much like his pall Aguayo, which is not a route to success.

As far as mets news goes, this has been a very melancholy, bittersweet day.

Does he mean not even out of the bullpen or not as a starter?

wow..what a dig at Endy..(not worse than not playing him..) But he was actually stepping it up before Murphy and Tatis arrived and started hitting. I think he’s earned and deserves a start here and there.

And, that’s a real big show of faith in Maine too. How do you think he feels, wanting nothing more than to compete, rehabbing, going on teh DL even though he didn’t want to, and getting himself cleared and activated, and than after sitting around hoping he’d get to come in for a day, Manuel says he’s not using him? Is he going to let Maine hang with the team, or did he kick him out of Shea?

Maybe before the presser, he told John, shhhh….I’m gonna go tell a lie, actually, you are starting on Saturday!

Dreams are good, too.

Wouldn’t surprise me. Historically maine is pretty good in final Saturdays against the Marlins.

However, I don’t know if being on the DL, that Maine has the arm strength to go that deep.

odds where real good he was going to get lit up anyway, so it might be for the best.

Does seem to be a communications disconnect though.

No communication disconnect. Manuel isn’t in the loop, because he’s not a doctor. It’s not his job to judge players health. He’s been pronounced good to go by doctors..but maybe Manuel needs the okay from Doc K?

I don’t think he would have gotten lit up out of the bullpen. If nothing else he couldn’t have been worst than the guys we’ve been using.

Perhaps he felt tight and could not get loose last night when he warmed up? Perhaps Manuel said that is it once that happened.

What? If that was going to be Jerry’s decision Maine should have had surgery weeks ago, Maine even said this himself.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, the Mets better get their medical staff in f**kin’ order because it is an absolute joke that they wait a month after Maine is placed on the DL, then activate him last night only to come out and say he is done for the year. I’d rather have Maine for a full season in 2009 than having him risk further damage to his shoulder.

I’M OFF TO SHEA STADIUM… GO METS!!

A little birdie just called me with this little nugget…your starting pitcher for Saturday’s game will be none other then Doctor K. Gooden called omar and said f- these babies I am going the distance and striking out 15, sniffing some coke and having some hookers in the locker room for in between innings.

i wish…he’d probably be better than half the scrubs in our bullpen at least.

There’s no point in having a player on the DL in September. If you’re on the 15 day DL, you are on the 40 man roster. He’d have to agree to be put on the 60 man DL, so they just activated him and then said “nevermind.”

I like this decision.

This makes me very sad.

The only thing that cheered me up (a little) is the headline from theonion.com:

“Struggling Mets Combine to Form Carlos Voltron”

Hysterical - especially the last paragraph

look on the bright side
if the sky opens up around the 6th inning
we wont have to goto the bullpen
(hopefully we have the lead)
then they can call the game and really gift wrap this for us

Jerry plain suks lately. He has become as bad as Willie. I have lost all my faith in him as a manager. Team was completely unprepared for the stretch run. He has become tight, panics and hasn’t been the leader we hoped for. Get your act together Jerry.. Teach these boys how to fight!

I don’t know about him plain suking, but I do agree he’s been making a lot of the same decisions Willie would have made lately. Specifically going with experience even if it’s not performing.

I seriously can’t believe we are living through this again….Another choke job..

Jerry is not as smart as he comes off. Yea he’s a word smith but he was totally unprepared emotionally and mentally for this stretch run.. If this continues and we fall out of the playoff the NEXT manager that comes here needs to prepare these guys from day 1.. I would remind them of the collapse every single day. Put up posters in the clubhouse. They have to learn to fight through the pressure. Enough of this sh!t.. Get Bobby V back and tell him to do what he has to do.
