Quote: Toughest Defeat
By Mike Nichols - Sep 25, 2008 9:13 am

Jerry Manuel, speaking to reporters immediately following last night’s loss:

“We’ve got to find a way.  Got to find a way.  We’ve got to keep pushing.  We’ve got to keep pressing.  We’ve got to find a way.  To have a guy at third base, a young player like that, and not to get him in, we’ve got to do a better job.  It’s critical we do a better job.  At this juncture, this is probably our toughest defeat, no question…Tonight was a difficult loss.  When tomorrow comes, hopefully the sun will come up.  [Laughs] It might not.  You’ve got to be ready to face it.  You’ve got to be ready to endure.  If somehow we can get through this, we’ll be ready for primetime.”

This was the toughest loss of the season for me by far.  The Mets had this win, but failures in big spots by many of the team’s top hitters cost them the victory.

Good teams with World Series aspirations don’t waste those opportunities.  It makes we sick that a rookie, who joined the team midseason, shows more composure and confidence at the plate in big spots than his veterans counterparts do.

As Cerrone stated last night, if the Mets do not make the playoffs, everyone, rightly so, will point to the ninth inning of last night’s loss.

You can also point to the 7th inning (1st & 3rd..no out)…and the 8th inning (2nd and 3rd..1 out) They were lucky in the 8th with the bases loaded walk. Very frustrating loss last night.

    • patrick says:

Not sure I would consider it luck when a journey man 2b knows enough not to swing at pitches out of the strike zone with the tying run sitting at third and the go ahead run sitting at second.

      Ya think?

I was attended last nights heartbreak. The tension was electric at first then all after losing the momentum the crowd stayed in neutral. While I am disappointed I enjoyed myself with the rest of those in Section 29. They know who they are. Myspace girl, Joe Smith’s Wife (sarcasm), Hot dog/Pretzel guy and the other girl. LOL. I think the funniest moment came in the eighth. I missed the tying run because of this one girl in Section 29 who somehow managed to slide four rows deep. She claims to have been sober…but I don’t know. The guys sitting by my side were concerned but after they found out she was okay…they couldn’t control themselves and WE all had a good laugh.

We were disappointed but at the same time at least the Mets are playing meanigful baseball. It’s not over FOLKS. Not yet!

LET’S GO METS! And of course Ya Gotta Believe

    • LastStopInn says:

I was so infuriated and angry at the Mets last night that I actually wanted them to get shutdown 123 by the Cubs in the last inning. Just so they can feel the sting of that horrible display of a game. Maybe they can take that and play better ball tonight. Last night they did not deserve to win at all.

  2. HOFMets57 says:

I’m not one to police spelling but wow, Mike..

  3. irish_eagle says:

I didn’t see the game. Radio only. However, from what Wayne Hagin said, the ball Murphy hit in the 7th was smoked, but right at Lee. Those things happen. If Wright had lined out it would be easier to live with it.

    • dave27 says:

Yeah, and Reyes should have been on second, and Lee would have been playing off the line. It’s not just bad breaks…it’s stupid baseball.

    • SheaVendor says:

There was nothing you could do about that. Lee was holding Reyes on so he was in the perfect spot. HOWEVER…why wasn’t Reyes trying to steal earlier in the AB?? If he had stolen 2nd..Lee would not have been standing practically on the base when that ball was hit!!

      • patrick says:

you guys can’t be serious, the tying run is sitting 90 feet a way you, the cubs are basically giving Daniel Murphy the entire right side of the field with Reyes being held on, if Murphy pokes a single in the hole it is so clever the Mets did not send Reyes, it was a bad break.

      • MetsLv31 says:

I dunno, Murph went down 1-2 in the count pretty quick and there were a couple of pickoff attempts to keep Reyes honest. Plus we had the tying run on third and you can’t give away any outs. If there was a strike ‘em out throw ‘em out DP then we would’ve have 2 outs runner on third and everyone would’ve been screaming at Reyes for trying to steal there…

  4. kd bart says:

The best at bats late were provided by Daniel Murphy and Ramon Martinez. Will Martinez start tonight at second? He showed more in 2ABs than Castillo and Reyes have shown all month.

  5. Joe Bacci says:

I have tickets to tonight and tomorrow… Anybody know what is going to happen if both games get rained out?

    BELIEVE

    • dave27 says:

I hope tonight is rained out…I want no part of Harden, even for 4-5 innings…nor do I want to see Pedro vs. the Cubs.

    • iluvbuckner says:

I’d hate to see if tonight’s rained out (looks more yes than no) and it has to be made up on Monday…THEN tiebreaker games? Man this is messed up.

      • shea_guevara says:

I don’t what they’d do. You think the Cubs wanna come back to NY and play a makeup game before the playoffs? Piniella’d be real happy about that.

Maybe, if we’re lucky, the Cubs pour it on in Milwaukee so they don’t have to do that. * fingers crossed *

    • LIMetfan74 says:

I dont think they even know whats going to happen if it rains the next couple of days.

  6. dave27 says:

Just for a laugh, note the Astros, with Oswalt on the mound tonight, are just 3 back of the Mets and Brewers in the loss column.

  7. CynicalMetsFan says:

“Good teams with World Series aspirations don’t waste those opportunities. It makes we sick that a rookie, who joined the team midseason, shows more composure and confidence in big spots than his veterans counterparts do.”

I am calling Murphy the Anti-Omar. he goes against Omar’s overall philosophy of building a team:

    Young
    Composed
    Confident

  8. derxmasta says:

hopefully the mets can “bounce back” as they have so many times this year.
not just a 1 game bounce back. they need at least a 4 game bounce.

  9. CynicalMetsFan says:

“As Cerrone stated last night, if the Mets do not make the playoffs, everyone, rightly so, will point to the ninth inning of last night’s loss”

You mean pointing to Omar’s failed approach to the bullpen for the second year in a row can’t be pointed at?

  10. BillyDeeWilliams says:

i’m not even going to bother watching these next 4 games. I couldn’t get to sleep after last night. My gf wanted to kill me, and I wanted to punch a hole in the tv. What a waste.

    • Joe Bacci says:

Listen man, i completely understand your frustration… you are probably a die hard fan that lives and dies with this team. I think you are expressing the way a lot of us feel now. But don’t let it affect your life and your relationships.

This is baseball, not life and death. Besides we should also learn from last year, grow a thicker skin, and be able to accept what happens good or bad because its out of our control. Once you let go of all that angst, all thats left to do is believe. And thats when baseball becomes fun again.

      • BillyDeeWilliams says:

I know what you mean. which is why i’ve decided to take these last 4 games off. I’m letting them go how they go and i won’t watch so i won’t get pissed. i sat around telling myself over and over last night that this team isn’t worth getting so riled up over. and then i did anyway. oh well.

        • LastStopInn says:

Dude, I got so pissed off last night that I wanted to see the Cubs come in that last inning and shutdown the Mets 123, and they did. I was cursing my TV last night saying “F**k you 1 out, f**k you 2 outs, f**k you 3 outs, ball game over” They didn’t deserve to win. They needed to lose that game after that 9th inning disgrace just to feel the sting.

  11. metsfanmurph says:

Well I am looking forward to next season. Here would be my team next year

    Schneider/Castro
    Delgado
    Murphy
    Reyes
I would trade Wright but the Mets won’t
    Manny
Aaron Rowand (in a trade with Matt Cain for Beltran)
    Church

    Johan
    Pelfrey
    Cain
    Maine
    Niese

sign K-Rod keep Ayala, Feliciano, and Joe Smith

    • Andrew says:

Who would you trade Wright for? I mean, come on, who do you really think you’d get for Wright who would be fair value? You have the second-best third baseman in the game, a guy who’s gonna hit .300 and hit 30 homers year in and year out, and you want to trade him because he had an off year hitting with men in scoring position.

Seriously. Think about what you’re saying right now.

      • FrankyJay says:

Trading Wright??….are you nut?….Beltran for Rowand and Cain?….Beltran is a gold glove with 25 HR 100 Runs, 100 RBI, 25 SB in a “average” year. I know this is frustrating but c’mon don’t make irracional comments.

        • metsfanmurph says:

After two straight September collapses, someone out of the core of this team has to be traded and I would not trade Reyes for anyone in baseball. So that leaves Wright and Beltran. I personally would trade Wright but the Mets organization would NEVER trade this bum. So you have to trade Beltan to break up this core. I think Cain and Rowand for Beltran is a trade that makes sense for both teams.

        • FrankyJay says:

I dont agree, this i can’t see it as a collpase, the Bullpen is horrific. The Mets wouldn’t be in this position not only if they have better bullpen, but if the bullpen just play like the past few years, sure they has their slump, but they were ok the majority of the time. The offense sometimes look bad, but you have to admit that they must be tire mentally watching the whole year all those games getting blew over and over again, even Beltran who is normally quiet, said it a couple of days ago.
The team only need a few things to make them a great things, and if the bullpen were at least ok…not great…just ok…the Mets already would’ve clinch the division. so why you need to make radical changes.

      • metsfanmurph says:

Arod, Rameriez, Chipper, Longorio, Glaus, Zimmerman, Cabrera (even though he doesn’t play 3B) on the top of my head are all better.

        • SantanaCYYOung says:

          agree

        • MetsLv31 says:

Zimmerman, really? With his .772 OPS? You can argue who is better in the field but Zimmerman shouldn’t even be allowed to carry DWright’s bat

        • Wow, you are nuts.

A-Rod = bigger rep for unclutch play than Wright. A-Rod has failed longer in those situations than Wright who has actually done much better in situational hitting in prior years.

Chipper = older, limited time left, gets hurt often

Longoria = Nice player but hasn’t done it as long as Wright

Glaus = C’mon man, get real. Has been less productive than Wright over the last 3 years and is much older.

Zimmerman = less productive than Wright over the last 3 years

Cabrera = A real butcher at third.

        • metsfanmurph says:

If you bat Zimmerman 3rd in the Mets order he gets 130 RBI’s and he is the best fielding 3B in baseball.

        • metsfanmurph says:

          Chipper is batting .360.

Arod is as unclutch as Wright but Arod’s numbers are in a different league.

Longorio’s hit in the All Star game off Wagner gave him 1 more big hit than Wright has ever had.

Glaus may have been a stretch.

          Cabrera is a guaranteed 35 homers, 110 RBI’s and .300 every year.

        • MetsLv31 says:

I defer to Free Aaron Heilman III’s post…

Also, no, no he doesn’t because he isn’t as good of a hitter.

        • Chipper is always hurt and he’s on the verge of falling off the cliff due to age.

A-Rod is much older than Wright and I bet that you’ve seen the last of A-Rod’s numbers being in another league. Wright has better numbers this year than A-Rod. And Wright is better defensively.

If you think Wright has never had a big hit for the Mets than it’s obvious you haven’t been paying attention to them over the last few years OR you have some weird bias against DW.

          Glaus is a stretch.

Cabrera is a nightmare at third base. His own pitchers have gotten into fights with him in the past over his shoddy play at third. He’s so bad there that Leyland couldn’t stand to watch anymore and put him at first base. PLUS, he averages ONLY 7 more RBIs per season than Wright. Not enough to make up for his horrid defense.

        • MetsLv31 says:

Chipper has played in 125 games…who do we have playing those other games?

Arod I won’t argue with, he can play on my team anytime

“Longorio [sic]” has a huge upside, but is still in his first year. Let’s see if he keeps it up.

Cabrera’s number’s are nearly identical to Wright’s this year and would make you cry at 3B.

        • MetsLv31 says:

Aaron, stop beating my posts by 25 seconds…

        • More about Chipper — What good is a .365 hitter if he can’t stay healthy all year long and will probably decline further very soon?

Chipper has just 75 RBIs this year. If we had had Chipper this year you’d have been whining about him as well.

BTW, I like Chipper a lot and he did the Mets a big favor yesterday. But no GM in baseball now would take Chipper over Wright. None.

        • MetsLv31 … haha … I type faster than you

      • MetsLv31 says:

Also, you’re signing Manny and picking up K-Rod…what lottery did you hit?

        • metsfanmurph says:

You clear Beltran’s 17 million off the books which is what I would pay K-Rod. So you are telling me that in a season of opening a new park and coming off a season where they drew over 4 million fans the Mets can bump the payroll up 20 million to pay Manny???

        • MetsLv31 says:

Pretty loose with the wallet when it’s not your money huh ;)? Well really my issue is the length of the contract these guys would need which could lead to insurance issues which lands us where we are now with Billy…

        • metsfanmurph says:

Even if you don’t clear Beltran you are trying to tell me that the Mets could not spend 40 million this offseason??? Are you kidding me???

They drew over 4 million this year. They are going to have a sell out every game next year in a new ballpark. The Mets have their own network even though it is the worst station in tv history and has shows like Loud Mouths, Beer Money, and Wheelhouse which doesn’t beat the Yule Log in the ratings.

        • MetsLv31 says:

The problem is they need more than just those 2 players…they need significant BP help and I’d rather have 2 average guys in the pen than a few years of Manny waiting at home plate to see if his ball leaves the park

      • ksuth says:

Agreed. Posts like that are the reason I simply skim here….

    • Stop dumping the baby with the bathwater.

If they fix the pen, a lot of the issues that are making you post irrational thoughts will go away.

  12. ifti99 says:

I thought Wright’s ab was the key. I was there on my fight screaming from my box seats, and I actually couldnt believe they were pitching to DW. It seemed like they would walk the bases loaded. They also had a third tier pitcher in there. I thought they were just pitching around DW, and DW bit when he should have just taken a walk. Why swing at 3 and 0? If DW walks there, they undoubtably walk Delgado and we have beltran up with the bases loaded and none out. As soon, as wright struck out, my confidence went to zero. Church is in a horrible slump, and he couldnt figure out a way to just get the ball in the air. Actually, he was lucky that the 2b went home; had he gone to second they had an almost certain DP.

Crushing loss… we will prob get rained out tonoihgt, possibly tomm. In essense, we cant lose another game the rest of the season

    • therealsince86 says:

They weren’t pitching TO Wright, they were pitching AROUND him. Manuel and Wright decided to give the green light 3-0 and 3-1.

  13. Knuckles99 says:

HOW DO THESE GUYS LOOK AT THEMSELVES!

Church is now on my s list. He has looked really bad after his return! A FLY BALL? IS THAT TOO HARD TO DO? ONE OUT??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE THESE GUYS!

    • FlightFromHouston says:

Church is probobly still dizzy but he won’t say anything … the guy looks like he’s not here

      • Knuckles99 says:

This team has done just about everything to lose!

AND I DON’T WANT TO HEAR THIS IS NOT A COLLAPSE!

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

          It’s not a collapse.

        • MH says:

It is NOT a collapse. And I would think that they feel this loss very much—what’s with the fans who want to punish them as if they weren’t trying? Feel bad—fine, we all do. But this is not a good time to play GM—you make irrational decisions. Glad none of us is in a position to do so.

  14. derxmasta says:

    if they dont make it,
i think the mets can point at
    1. all the blown saves
    2. all the men left in scoring position w/ less than 2 outs
    3. themselves

if they had won a couple of those “meaningless” april games they wouldnt be playing meaning ful september games right now.

  15. LenF says:

The toughest part of this loss for me is knowing how hard it is for this team to work it’s way through 9 innings to earn a win tonight.

The easy wins are so few for this team.

Even if the Mets jump out to an early 3 or 4 run lead, you know that it’s going to take an incredible effort to hold onto it or build on it. Every win is a tense 9 inning struggle and every loss seems to be an excruciating culmination of continuous missed opportunities and late inning bullpen meltdowns.

I love being a fan of a baseball team because it’s like reading a chapter of a good book every night for 6 months. But these last two Septembers have caused me to reconsider this analogy.

I really thought after last year I had learned to put baseball into perspective but last night was as painful for me as any loss over the last two seasons.

  16. FlightFromHouston says:

Why do I invest myself and my money in this mickey mouse organization that humiliates its face with chokes and then rewards the Omar architect with a 4 year extension …

Omar and Wilpons making me less of a fan

    • npanzeca says:

So the 2 people that are making you “less of a fan” are 2 people that don’t hit or pitch. Interesting.

  17. SantanaCYYOung says:

well then start looking at this game cause the Mets are NOT making the playoffs

  18. Prismo says:

    Weather report!

The storm slowed down a bit overnight – looks like there’s a very good chance the rain will hold off until after tonight’s game!

Friday’s game looks less likely to be played, with the only chance being the rain ending sometime in the evening allowing the game to be played (possibly with a delay).

I’ll have another update at noon, when I think I’ll be able to make a fairly certain call regarding tonight’s game.

  19. itsouttahere says:

Top 5 most tragic games I’ve ever watched. I’d rather be a yankee fan where they know they lost months ago rather than having to painfully going down to the last game and have the same fate as a last place team.

  20. Elastic says:

    Wright choked, inexcusable.

  21. FrankyJay says:

I’m still confidente, because besides sunday games with Sabathia, the brewers doesn’t even know who will pitch the rest of the games, and we have Pelfrey and Santana in 2 of the 4 remaining games. I like those 2 games.
But i was frustrated last night because Atlanta did their job and defeat Philadelphia 2 games, we have a perfect situation to be tied in the loss column with them and they blew it. Now we need to be perfect and cross the fingers that Washington beat them at least one.

  22. cver says:

  23. derxmasta says:

lets hope lou gift wraps this game for us too.
bench harden after the first drop of rain.
but the mets havent shown the ability to step it up a notch recently.
earlier its one tough loss followed by 3-4-5 game winning streaks
in September its one tough win followed by 3-4 game losing streaks.

  24. Knuckles99 says:

Gut wrenching loss. Perez is a bum. Ayala is a bum. Church is a bum. Castillo, god, you are soooooo bum. A. Reyes, twirp, and a bum. Wright, nah, still love you, but a friggin’ bum!

Another year? I guess at this point with 26 years under my belt, I should just get used to it by now!

  25. Justin4383 says:

If they do not make the playoffs this team needs to be broken up. One of the three big players needs to go

    • itsouttahere says:

we need to get rid of a big player? kidding me? If I recall, Beltran, Reyes, Wright, Santana, and Delgado are all doing their thing, just everyone else is not.

    • astoll says:

Why? Are those 3 REALLY the problem? It’s not the awful bullpen? It’s not Luis Castillo/ Argenis Reyes and Brian Schneider being at the bottom of the lineup? It’s not Church hitting about .004 since he came back?

      Come on.

  26. derxmasta says:

who was that other 2nd baseman?
he hit the ball over the cf’s head.
    why isnt he playing everyday?

  27. FrankyJay says:

I would play today Murphy and Evans today and Martinez at 2b.
I know Church defense is better, but we need offense and the rookies have been ok so far.

    1 – Reyes
    2 – Murphy
    3 – Wright
    4 – Delgado
    5 – Beltran
    6 – Evans
    7 – Schneider
    8 – Martinez
