Shea: Calm before the Storm

September 25, 2008 at 5:36 pm · 31 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

I’m back sitting in the dugout after having watched batting practice.  The player’s equiptment is in place, the water jugs are filled, and the players and reporters have filed into the clubhouse as Ed Coleman and Kevin Burkhardt wrap up their pregame interviews.

Howard Johnson jogged by, said excuse me, and continued on in to the clubhouse, while looking quite confused by me just sitting here smiling.

I am flanked by Moises Alou in street clothes on one side and Brian Schneider’s equiptment bag on the other.

I love this time of day, as I think I wrote last time.

It’s like the calm before the storm, with the lights on, and a cool positivity in the air.

news baby news…. rumors, rumblings, etc…. feelings, (woa, woa, woa, feelings) – we can do without.

I can almost hear the dulcet tones of “Willie, Mickey & the Duke” playing when reading these “Dear Diary” posts. And my stomach turns accordingly.

MetsFan4Decades September 25, 2008 at 6:29 pm

What’s this ‘we’ stuff? Speak for yourself. I enjoyed all those posts today.

wheres.the.magic.number September 25, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Fair enough. You enjoyed them – fantastic. I found them incredibly fluffy… “The player’s equiptment is in place, the water jugs are filled” – I expected the next line to be “and visions of sugar plumbs danced in their heads”… My reaction wasnt intended to criticize all of todays posts.. I think most people visit the site to gain additional info not available elsewhere, or to obtain more in depth analyses. Reading about water coolers ? I was just asking for something relating to tonight, last night, etc…

Don’t bother. There’s a very strange tendency to post with “special thanks” to Matt, or to respond violently to any criticism of Matt. Actually kind of an interesting phenomenon — the flip side of the guys who scream at Cerrone in “all caps” after a loss. Just seems oddly “Matt-centric.” I really doubt he’s such a fragile little flower that he can’t take criticism of his work. For my part, this was the kind of misty-eyed fluff that I really dislike in baseball journalism.

I thought Matt’s pieces were awesome. I would guess the overwhelming majority of Metsblog readers did as well.

toomanyuniforms September 25, 2008 at 6:57 pm

I thought they were a bit much, but the guy definitely loves him some Mets, so. . . .

Those posts were fantastic. Gave us all a real feel for this field that we have spent so much time looking at…and, of course, vicariously lets us enjoy what you are vicariously enjoying.

Great stuff.

DjDeF September 25, 2008 at 5:56 pm

where are you watching the game matt? Hopefully from the bullpen we may need a lot of arms tonight

HeadlinerG60 September 25, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Live the dream Matt!!! Punch Heilman in the groin for all of us!!!

rey ordonez September 25, 2008 at 6:26 pm

hahaha

mrose September 25, 2008 at 6:03 pm

I am so f’ing jealous!

derxmasta September 25, 2008 at 6:07 pm

alou is still with the mets?

Darth Manuel September 25, 2008 at 6:18 pm

No offense intended but WTF man.. You got this chance because of us fans.. All we got was lame pics and stories about your childhood. Would of been nice if you posted a nice little photo album and showed us regular folks some of the nooks and crannies inside the clubhouse and the stadium.. You realize that most of us have never been in the clubhouse or on the field? You dropped the ball today matt…

oklametsfan September 25, 2008 at 6:24 pm

calm down. he said in an earlier post that a photo album is coming in the next day or too.

keep patting yourself on the back though.

oklametsfan September 25, 2008 at 6:26 pm

get a grip pal

ASod1975 September 25, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Lay off a little Darth….I found Matt’s posts today to be just what I needed to take a little break from the Mets’ version of ‘Groundhog Day’. I think I would feel the same way as he does, if I got a chance to be on the field at Shea Stadium…you’d feel like a little kid again, and I think that comes through in his posts. I know we’re all feeling the strain (and the migraines) of the Mets season, but I thought Matt’s trip to Shea came at the right time…a pleasant diversion and something positive to read for a change.

kingman 26 September 25, 2008 at 6:33 pm

I agree 100%…and he DID give us a tour of places we never see, and did include pics.

kingman 26 September 25, 2008 at 6:31 pm

What is wrong with you “Darth”? You must stay up 24 hours a day to think up negativity as ridiculous as this.

GregB September 25, 2008 at 6:32 pm

wow, what a jerk.

erik September 25, 2008 at 6:35 pm

I thought these were great posts by Matt and if George Thorogood can pretend to catch a ball in center field why can’t Matt pretend to get a grounder from short. You need to relax Darth.

mr.gee21 September 26, 2008 at 2:22 am

Wow, what the heck are you thinking, man? Really?

erik September 25, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Tonight on SNY: “Moises Alou has announced he will miss most of next year after shaking hands with Metsblog.com’s Matt Cerone. Apparently Cerrone shattered every bone in Alou’s hand continuing Alou’s list of injuries.”

Darth Manuel September 25, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Also in related news Matt Cerrone was then taken to an area hospital with strange warts all over his hands..

Doesn’t that dude piss all over his hands?

erik September 25, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Thinking that he was dying from Alouitis, Cerrone admitting to “taking one for the bloggers”. Doctors do not know what this could mean. In other news, Luis Castillo and Aaron Heilman have disappeared from Shea Stadium. Mets staff apparently don’t remember either player being there all season.

GregB September 25, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Sounds like you had a great day at Shea.

Thanks for sharing it, and your thoughts, with us.

Metsman2879 September 25, 2008 at 7:14 pm

interesting my friend said he was going to eat dinner tonight with moises….

Felonious Monk September 25, 2008 at 8:03 pm

I kinda wish they would have had Moises and Castillo go for a stroll out by the Cubs’ dugout before the game with none other than Steve Bartman. Get inside their heads a bit! ;)
