Shea: Live Blogging during Game

by Matthew Cerrone on September 25th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

…6:53 pm…

I am going to try and live blog some random thoughts about the game, from my phone, while here at Shea Stadium.

…7:04 pm…

The buzz from Shea is that Brian Schneider made a visit to the hospital for special surgery today, to check out some sort of issue with his back apparently – this is why he is not in the lineup I would think.

Also, I think Daniel Murphy got the biggest round of cheers from the 15-or-so thousand fans in the stands during the introductions.

…7:08 pm…

I love that they play Stronger by Kanye West as the players take the field.

…7:24 pm…

As loud as boos were after Pedro Martinez let up the second run in the first inning, the cheers were louder following Jose Reyes’s stolen base.

…7:30 pm…

I walked behind the WFAN radio booth, and could hear them speaking the broadcast, which was like hearing a band in person for the first time after only knowing them in CD.

…7:38 pm…

They let me in today with a press pass, meaning I do not have a designated seat.

In other words, it’s very difficult to watch a game in this building without a designated seat to stop at.

No matter where you stand, there is some security person shooing you on your way.

…7:40 pm…

I’m standing here on this Blackberry, I hear a roar, look up and everyone is looking into the sky. Before I can finish thinking, ‘Hmmm,’ a foul ball bounces a few feet to my right.

In a way, I guess it would be fitting for me, Matt from MetsBlog, to die by way of a foul ball in Shea.

…7:49 pm…

Cow Bell-man says hello.

…8:18 pm…

This place erupted when Ryan Church tied the game. There is a clear tension in the air among us fans.

Also, my camera battery died, but a girl who reads the site, who stopped me to say hello, was using the same camera and let me borrow her battery.

So, thanks, Liz.

…8:00 pm…

There are way too many Cubs fans. Also, for a team that is not making the post-season for the first time in years, Yankees fans are still too proud for my taste. There are countless of them, wearing full blown Yankee jerseys to Shea. It’s quite annoying.

…9:00 pm…

I’m up, and I mean, way up in the absolute last seat in the stadium, upper deck, corner seat in left field, and I think I”m going to throw up.

Apparently, I”m now also afraid of heights and was not aware of that until this moment,

Nevertheless, it’s awesome to be up here and see the stadium in full, to get a wide scope of it all.

…9:10 pm…

The fans gave Pedro Martinez an appreciate cheer and standing ovation as he walked off the field, which he acknowledged by tipping his cap, waving his hand as if to understand that this could very well be the last time we see him on the mound at Shea.

Then, before that touching moment could sink in, Rincon let’s up a three run homer to silence the crowd.

…9:04 pm…

Lots of boos for Rincon as he walked from the mound.

Someone just asked me why the relief pitchers no longer wait to pass of the ball to the next reliever. My answer was, ‘So they can get off the field as fast as possible,’ I would guess.

…9:43 pm…

The crowd has broken into at least three Let’s Go Mets chants on their own, not at the prompting of the PA system, or Kevin James, which is always great to see.

That said, Darryl Strawberry was just up on the Diamondvision leading a chant, which was pretty cool, actually.

…10:00 pm…

Wow. I know what it looks like to see 10,000 umbrellas bouncing up and down in unison…amazing slide by Church. Just incredible.

By the way, late-season candidate for MVP: Ramon Martinez.

…10:20 pm…

The crowd is going crazy with anticipation.

…10:33 pm…

They’re not dead yet, folks.

By the way, screw the Wild Card. I still want this team to beat out the Phillies for the division.

Like the scoreboard said after the game, “Believe.”

Have a great night Mets fans, I know I will.
