News: Mets announce Basic Plan for Farewell
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 26, 2008 2:13 pm

The Mets today announced that Tom Seaver, Willie Mays and Mike Piazza, among 45 other former players, will be on hand for this Sunday’s Shea Goodbye post-game, on-field ceremony following the team’s 1 p.m. game against the Marlins.

the buzz from Shea suggests the team will have a cat-walk type entrance set up outside the stadium as players arrive, so fans can take pictures, ask for autographs and welcome in their favorite players…however, i have no idea where such a thing will be set up…i’m thinking some place by the Diamond Club, but i am guessing on that, though once they start setting up it will be fairly obvious fairly early…

…also, it would be nice if the team would dish out more details, such as where fans should set up shop, how early to get there, when will the stadium open, etc

lastly, there is more and more of indication that Dwight Gooden will be in the house…the team is working to get him to go…like i wrote yesterday, this has most everything to do with doc’s apprehension, and very little to do with the team, who would love to have him be part of the celebration…

…my hunch is that the team is being very quiet on this, so not to raise expectations should doc bail at the last minute

speaking of arrivals, if piazza, Robin Ventura and Edgardo Alfonzo all roll up at the same time, i may react like they’re The Beatles…seriously…i loved that team

When Jessie Orosco shows up, someone get him a uniform and send him out to the bullpen. We’re going to need him.

    Two different last paragraphs…weird.

I loved that tea too. I was just thinking about how Piazza walked to the plate, like slow but inevitable doom for the other team. He was a friggin beast. I hope DWright develops a presence like that.

      * team, not tea. I drink coffee.

TOTALLY agree….There was a point in Piazza’s career as a Met (98-01 mostly), when he would walk to the plate and everyone in the stadium, players, fans, grounds crew…everyone just KNEW he was going to punish the baseball, all with that snarl on his face….Man I loved watching that guy in a Mets uniform…

I will NEVER forget the emotion I felt on September 21, 2001, when he hit the homerun that lifted NY up, if only for a few moments, after the tragedy of September 11th. I still tear up everytime I see a replay of that homer…

Is having the ceremony AFTER the game really the best move? I mean, what if we lose Sunday and don’t make the playoffs? What kind of atmosphere will that be?

I am really looking forward to go to the game Sunday!

Anyone know if the Mets reached out to Tim McGraw? Not to sing but to represent his dad, Tug. I know the philthies claim him as theirs (what WS?) but he was a Met first. And being a relief pitcher and coining “You gotta believe!” I mean we need all the help we can get.

It should be known that Piazza’s plane from LA landed in New York during the bottom of the 9th yesterday. Coincidence?

  8. GW says:

Why are they not doing this BEFORE the game? I agree with Groteguy.

OK, this whole final weekend at Shea idea is finally starting to sink in with me…..Part of me is starting to get REALLY excited to see some of the mets greats return to shea for the final time, and part of me is starting to become a little emotional….all kinds of nostalgia over here….

From the Doc, Keith, Gary, Ron, Mookie Mets to the Piazza, Fonzie, Ventura, Leiter Mets….WOW…Can’t wait to cheer for them one last time.

Does anyone know if it’s going to be televised, or will I be stuck listening to Matt Yalloff and Lee Mazzilli while this is going on?

    • gipper82475 says:

Of course SNY will televise it. Question is – will those of us outside the market see it? Extra innings covered postgame celebrations after the Mets won the NLE in 06, but this is different.

Speaking of clinching….what the heck happens if it comes down to Sunday and there is a postgame clinching champagne celebration AND a scheduled postgame “so-long” to Shea??

How will they work those logistics?

  11. MH says:

I really hope Doc is there. He should have been a Hall of Famer he was so good. He gave us a few very memorable years. Come back Doc and get some love from your fans!

Does anyone know what time the players will be showing up?
