The Mets lost to the Marlins by the score of 6 to 1 tonight at Shea Stadium.
For a recap, boxscore and stats, click here.
Now I’m wishing it rained.
The Marlins mean business and completely throttled the Mets from the start tonight.
Two things before I let you guys have at it.
1) The Mets left a small village on base paths tonight and had numerous opportunities to put a crooked number on the board, but no one was able to the big hit. Maybe they were waiting for Ramon Martinez and Robinson Cancel to save the day. Ugh!
2) I know the bullpen options are limited, but why on earth would Jerry Manuel bring in Aaron Heilman in such a big spot. Time and time again, Heilman has proven he is unable to pitch in clutch situations, but yet, manuel still continues to give Heilman the opportunity. It’s maddening. For the record, I wanted Joe Smith in that spot, as he is the Mets best reliever this season at stranding runners.
With the loss and the Brewers win, the Mets are now one game behind the Brewers in the race for the National League Wild Card.
Weather permitting, the Mets continue their four-game series with the Marlins tomorrow at Shea Stadium, starting at 1 pm, with Johan Santana taking on Ricky Nolasco.

Well there is always next year, this team is done cant wait to see the changes that NEED TO MADE AND BETTER BE MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Start by firing Omar Minaya.
We might finally be eliminated tomorrow. Yay!
Seriously, what a bunch of choke artists.
Oh, and isn’t your batting average supposed to go UP when the bases are loaded? What’s the mets team ba with bases loaded this year? .220? .230?
Nice full count pitches tonight Heilman.
Is it me or has Feliciano let 5 of his last 6 batters he’s faced get on base?
OK I looked it up.
Feliciano 4 of last 5 batters have reached and 5 of 7.
2008 Mets are batting .217 with the bases loaded this year.
.225 with 2 outs and RISP
Good season boys. Enjoy your new stadium next year. Have fun without me.
Mets fans – cut your steak – seriously just buy a steak knife. You’ll find it’s much better if you cut it into smaller pieces so you don’t CHOKE
The fans aren’t choking — the players did. Why do you have such anger? Childhood?
I’m sad — as a fan I know how demoralized I feel — I can only imagine how the players feel. This bullpen has killed them, maybe not last night, but all throughout the season and the end of last season. They need to make a lot of bullpen changes for next year.
Hey the players feel so bad they’ll clean the lockers and be on the golf course by 2 PM Monday.
I try not to feel sorry for millionaires
We better not boo them. Mike, doesn’t believe 2 historic collapses in 2 consecutive years doesn’t warrant letting our feelings known.
Don’t boo!
who pitches sunday?
probably perez.
By the way, there was a presidential debate tonight. Tough loss, uphill battle, yada yada yada, but put things in perspective… the economy’s tanking, we’re mired in two wars, health care’s a mess, my student loans are killing me, and yet another old white guy may become president.
Yeah and if the Mets get knocked out I have to worry about all of that. Sports are a distraction from that. Don’t play the perspective card. I think we all agree that those issues are more important but this is a baseball blog. If the roles were reversed and we won and the Brewers lost we wouldn’t try to dampen the celebration with things like this so lets not pretend like if we just would have watched the debate this wouldn’t have sucked so much.
I’m trying to distract myself from the loss by putting it in perspective. You’re absolutely right. I’m crushed, but I have to keep my sanity somehow.
Sort of like when you find yourself in a bad spot and think “other people have it worse!”
We could all be Royals fans.
If we were all Royals fans………. They might of actually had a sellout this year.
if we were all royal fans we’d live at least 5 years longer due to lack of stress.
I can’t take four more years of bad baseball and terrible economic, foreign, and social policy.
yeah, your student loans are the government’s fault. i’m sure if a young black guy were president your loans would magically vanish.
maybe if a young black guy were president we wouldn’t have four more years of disastrous foreign policy, wars on false pretenses, economic disasters because of deregulation, ignoring of global warming, etc. then student loans wouldn’t be as big of a deal. and steve i don’t envy your being in d.c. right now.
I live in DC also, and it does sukk. Then again, I’m here because I couldn’t meaningfully work in my field (defense policy) from home in NYC.
I’m sure it’d be easier for him to pay them off if he wasn’t spending nearly 5 bucks on gas and 500 bucks a month on electricity/gas bills for a home.
Don’t be a moron, the price of living is going up at a way higher rate than wages are. Any 6th grade economics student could put together how our economic status would effect the ability to pay off loans.
he said “…and my student loans are killing me” along with “the economy’s tanking” as if they are separate issues. so if one was dependent on the other as you’ve implied, he wouldn’t have needed to state both, that’s double jeopardy. therefore, according to steve, his loans are an independent problem irrespective of your speculative gas and electricity problems.
but keep waiting for someone else to pay you, and then blame the gov’t for your financial shortcomings when it doesn’t happen. oh and then bring it into a public sports forum unsolicited. that’s a great way to live. i’m glad to have read it.
there’s plenty of money to be made, and if you can’t find it, blame yourself.
my entire point of the initial reply to his post was that politics are probably better suited on a site not entitled metsblog.com. but thanks for springing into action with a$$umption of someone else’s fiscal scenario and prolonging a conversation devoid of meaningful mets talk.
so instead of paying off debts many people spend lets say 70 bucks on tickets, 30 bucks on food and another 30 bucks on beer and 20 bucks on transportation when you go to the Mets games. Thats 150 dollars a game
and then everyone blames the government for everyone being in debt.
if you can’t afford to pay your bills stop going to the ballpark and watch the games on tv
When in my post did I say my student loans were the government’s fault? I willingly took on the loans because I knew that in order to increase my earning potential I had to attend graduate school since a Bachelors degree no longer means anything.
You say “a young black guy were president your loans would magically vanish”. He’s better equipped to understand my struggles with school debt and actually do something about it than an old white guys who married the daughter of the richest man in Arizona and depended on her to finance his early campaigns.
That said, keep voting against your economic interest. See how good it’s doing you.
1) nobody was talking to you, i was talking to “steve in DC” … if you can’t figure that out, no wonder you’re pissed about still paying for college/grad school
2) HAHAHAHA if you actually think any presidential candidate is truly understanding of the working man’s plight. truly hilarious. i have a bridge to sell you.
3) where in the hell do you get off presuming to know where my economic interests rest? clearly we are on very different playing fields, and i can only thank god for that. but, it’s still truly disturbing to know that your vote is essentially for sale. good work. i can only hope you do not represent the ma$$es, but i’m afraid you do.
Vote Obama or McCain! :)
I feel like matt should take down all the censors for the rest of the week so we (me) can express how we really feel.
f^%k the mets i just need to stop watching baseball!
The 17 games to play stat is starting to haunt us again. So far we are 6-9 with 2 to play. I’m sorry but when you keep getting first and second with 1 out and 3-0 counts, you have to DRIVE the ball. Instead, popups to centerfield. And as much as I love Church, he is killing us.
The thing that kills me the most is seeing Reyes and Pedro smiling during an important game. It is as if they are here to get paid no matter what the outcome is. After a great comeback win, they come out flat. Pathetic especially after seeing the quotes that Florida loved beating them last year seeing fans cry and silencing 55000. Mets, how about a little anger in your game. See you next year.
I’m starting to think that the reason this team bounces back so well from devastating losses is because to many of these players the losses aren’t devastating. They don’t seem to get too high or too low and the bulletin board material from the Marlins means nothing to these players. The personality of this team, while being very civil and well mannered, does not endear itself to the fans. Hence the boos. But then what do I know?
But hey, Omar got his extension.
wilpons are morons, should have just given him a two year extension, but no…..four years……same with castillo….four years.
Minaya has not received his contract yet. If they don’t make it, he won’t.
That’s right. Omar deserves the extension for having a great team yearly for 145 games. He has four years to figure out what to do with the other 17. Meanwhile screw the fans.
how come no one thrown any thing on the field?
if i was there i would. throw my jersey and hat on the field
cause no one was there. There will be even fewer there when all the high rollers are the only ones who can afford tix. Their suits shrivel in the rain.
Every bullpen pitcher should be gone in the offseason except Joe Smith. Blow the bullpen up Omar! Give K-Rod a blank check and Fuentes 10 mil. per year for 3 years. Whatever it takes. Its painfully obvious that bullpens win pennants. Or in our case lose pennants.
Yeah, it’s the bullpen’s fault we couldn’t score more than two runs.
one run, dude.
ugh.
My point is about more than just this one game. If our bullpen blew only half of the games it did then we would have won the division already.
did you actually….WATCH…the game?
BELIEVE, people.
That’s our job. If we can’t do our part, how can we expect the Mets to do theirs?
because they are f$%king bumbs!
Another battered wife heard from.
F**K “BELIEVE”
Because BELIEVE doesn’t score that runner from 3rd base.
And neither does this team.
They’re gonna win or lose (mainly lose) with or w/o your “believe” and that’s the truth,
All your “believe” really is……it’s a gift to the Wilpons, You’ll always spend your money if you “BELIEVE”
Believe THIS lemmings
Please, do us all a favor and go to hell with your lemming bullshi*.
Cause we’ll be laughing when we’re in and your sorry pathetic life is still miserable.
I guess I’ll just have to make it a point to laugh at you WHEN THEY’RE ELIMINATED tomorow.
This is how you display your displeasure…don’t go to mets.com which makes money of advertising, don’t buy mets gear, don’t buy tix…that is what will tell ownership you are angry and that they need to change things
Because they’re being paid very well to do it. They are professionals and should take pride in their work.
So the METS blew another big game because the fans did not cheer loud enough or long enough at Shea? Those of us being tortured at home where not yelling at the tv good enough? This team has no heart. When Rollins calls you out you answer with pride on the field. When a looser like Jacobs or LoDuca makes comments like they did before the game you let your bats talk for you and when you see the Braves celebrating a METS loss you wipe them up as well and the list goes on and on. What do the METS do, they talk some talk and say all the wright things get on the field and LOOSE. That will show them…heheheheheheh WHAT A TEAM.
WRONG. Our job as fans is to support players who deserve being supported. These guys deserve only BOOS,
I notice the words “mailed it in” are missing from this recap
Also does anyone feel like we have to start Santana tomorrow. Even if it’s on short rest.
He is starting tomorrow.
From the AP:
“The bullpen was a problem again. If games ended after eight innings, the Mets would have entered Friday with an eight-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East, according to Stats, LLC.
But they last nine innings, and New York always seems to have trouble late.”
Not that we all don’t know that, but it bears reminding anyone (the front office) who doesn’t know what the real problem with this team is.
You don’t blow as many games late, lose as many games late, as the Mets do and still deserve the post-season. It’s a miracle we’ve gotten this close to it.
here’s my angry essay for the night, already on the game thread…
these mets ARE quite gutless, theres no denying it. this doesnt mean they’re not tryin, but they have handled the pressure worse than any other team in baseball the last two years (and, in fact, at the end of 06, where they should have easily won the WS). Plus negativity gets in your head, the 06 NLCS haunted the 07 mets, and the 07 collapse has certainly played a great deal in the 08 version, now all but complete. That’s why you have to tear apart this group, there are guys who might flourish elsewhere, but need to get out of Queens. Keep Beltran and Reyes, Santana, Pelfrey and Smith – everyone else is fair game. Yes, even Wright… I love him and have always defended him, but if you can get a whole lot in return (like a big bat and some quality pen arms, or even a couple of proven, not super, regulars and a couple of super prospects), what the heil… I’m sure he’ll be great wherever he goes, but he isn’t THAT good (I mean, you hear a lot of negative comparisons with A-Rod, but his allegedly “padded”, “unclutch” numbers will nevertheless never look like ARod’s..) and NY with its pressure and media will just give him the opportunity to prove all the haters right.. I’m not saying trade Wright, but if a HUGE package can be gotten in return, I am not categorically opposed… The Mets desperately need some veterans with winning experience and some hungry youngsters who are the COMPLETE package (not like that kid in left field, who can hit pretty good but is not a major league fielder). Perez needs to go. Manuel OF COURSE does too, I wont even get into the reasons, and I’m hoping that’s a foregone conclusion… As for Minaya, leaking his extension at the time that they did was just another miserable move by the same front office which handled the Randolph firing like it did — they take the award for worst baseball diplomacy of the decade. That said, I don’t think he’s the problem: he doesnt go onto the field in pressure situations and there arent too many available GMs that would be better. On a final, obvious note, Castillo, Heilman, Sanchez and, IMO, Schneider need to never put on a Mets uniform again. there’s my two cents
If they trade Wright for anything, I am never cheering for this organization again. Why trade a young budding superstar? Wright and Reyes are 25. They aren’t in the prime of their careers even by baseball standards where you can expect a decline by the mid 30’s. The only star on this team you can even think about trading is Beltran (which I oppose on all levels) but at least a rational case could be made for it.
Trading Wright would be insane. They signed him to a 7 year cheap deal. You can’t buy guys like him for the price they have him at. His contract and numbers allow them to sign the Santanas of the world, and who knows for the bullpen.
OH NO IF THEY DEAL WRIGHT THEY WON’T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!>?!?~?
Using that logic, the might as well trade Santana, Beltran, Wright and Reyes for some minor leaguers. They won’t make the playoffs then either.
Furioso: Lame excuse. Without Wright, we’d have been eliminated a week ago, at least.
Trading Wright just because the bullpen is complete trash would be one of the worst moves in the history of this franchise.
Yer right, Arod Jr. has NOTHING To do with it whatsoever
(Except for the other night, right?)
It was one at bat. Church and Castro both had opportunities to drive in the run, and neither of those two got it done.
Aside from maybe Chipper Jones, David Wright is the best 3B in the NL, bar none. There’s no one out there who you could trade for or sign that would provide Wright’s value offensively and defensively.
they will not be traded and they shouldn’t be. just have to hope that they grow out of these big-spot nerves. meanwhile, unfortunately, the only real change this team can make is to rip apart the bullpen (and let perez go). hopefully omar will do that.
We’re not going to get anything that’s going to make us a better team now for Wright or Reyes and probably Beltran. The only time it would make sense to trade any of them is if were rebuilding and wanted to rebuild the farm system quickly.
Ok this Wright = A-Rod thing is a joke. What idiot came up with that? A-Rod has been playing ball longer than Wright and is a hired gun. He played in non-contending markets on go no place teams and was the big fish in a little pond. Now he is on a team that contends in a market that watches very close and he is making $252 Million buck and he is just average. Wright is young and homegrown and the face of this team as is Reyes. If I was going to compare Wright to anybody it would be Jeter.
Doesn’t matter what team beat us, but I don’t think it was the Cubs tonight.
I can now go out tomorrow without thinking about the mets. The offense was so horrific, no need to watch tomorrow. Very disappointing.
All roads lead to Heilman and Yadier Molina. As soon as that ball cleared the wall, the downward spiral began. He needs to be off the team. Trade him to KC or Baltimore or Seattle. He needs to leave yesterday.
You got So Yaguchi game 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
look guys,
are the mets ever different? ive watched since 1990
they have always bin bums.
looking at next year with a revamped bullpen and i’m feeling very good…have a great winter everyone, look forward to speaking during hot stove
i think they will have a better team next year!
but they will do the same thing!
I see the new post-elimination spin setting up: “it was the bullpen’s fault!”
TO A POINT.
But geeze, the offense sh*t the bed all through the season. How many times did 2 on no out become the kiss of death?
No, sorry. Fix the pen (and by fix I mean DFA EVERYONE) but the “core” needs a radical shakeup.
Mathematically, there is not way you win that argument.
Even a mediocre bullpen has this team in the playoff right now.
This bullpen save for a small stretch in late august and early september was one of the worst in the history of major league baseball.
It easy to say dump this one dump that one trade him let this one walk, BUT, what is out there and who can we get in return? I say Delgado must go and go after Tex. Dump the bullpen and start fresh, we need K-Rod and dump Pedro and Ollie and get what we can. Trade Castillo for a pack of gum, schneider needs to go as well and bring back Piazza.
I would even go so far ( it will never happen) as looking at what we can get for Beltran. This team was built to win in 2006 ONLY and when they failed we where doomed. Omar wanted a ring and put all his eggs in one basket and they all broke. I sat keep Murphy, martinez, evans and A. Reyes. Give them a chance to play .
As much as I like Jerry Manuel, he can not come back next year. The whole coaching staff needs to go after two straight choke jobs.
My dream would be for Omar to lure Bobby V back from Japan.
Also, Jose Reyes needs to be traded. The team’s too dependent on him and he’s too inconsistent. I wonder if you could package him in a trade to the Royals and get Soria and Greinke back? That would be huge for this team. The Mets could sign Cristian Guzman to play shortstop next year.
I’m pretty sure Guzman got a two-year extension, and no way do I want to deal Reyes. The sad thing is, if the Mets had gotten Manny, I think they win the division easily. I can see why they didn’t get him (they didn’t want to completely deplete the minor league system) but I think that move would have put the team over the top. I wonder if they’ll consider him in the offseason, although the minute he got here, he’d go into steep decline like every other veteran player the Mets bring in (dating back several years, think Robbie Alomar, Carlos Baerga, Mo Vaughn, etc. etc.). You know it’s strange…I’ve been living and dying with every loss but this one wasn’t so bad for me. Maybe because they were never really in it and I felt they had no shot to get back in it, let alone blow it. Once they didn’t score in those first three innings, it was game, set, match. I’m just going to try and enjoy the next two games and say whatever happens happens. I mean, back in 99, the Mets were down two with three to play and somehow got in (playing the Pirates always helps). You never know, but it certainly doesn’t look good….
FYI, Grienke is a head case. He could be Heilman Jr. A guy who flashes great stuff when it doesn’t matter, and then comes unglued when the game’s on the line.
THAT is what you want for Jose Reyes?
Good lord, the team is too dependent on him. Why not go look at how many times David Wright left Jose Reyes standing on Second and Third base this year with less than two outs.
Please.
Jose Reyes.
Go Get your Free Citi Field pin.
Reyes brings this team to life. He needs to steal more and get on base more. When he is on base it forces the pitcher and gets in his head. Like he did to Zambrano the other night. There is only so much we can do with this team and It dont look good. We had our destiny on or hands and blewit. Now we have to watch the CUBS.
get on base more?!!?!? the guy has over 200 HITS THIS SEASON, and 70 WALKS!!!!
when your leadoff hitter has 200 hits and 70 walks and 50+ stolen bases but doesnt lead the team in runs scored someone behind him is NOT doing their job.
Things are pretty bleak unless the offense comes up huge tomorrow. Johan has maybe 6 innings max after Tuesday. That means an 8 or 9 run lead is a must. It’s not completely over yet, but now, a tie for the WC is about the best we can do.
How much do you want to bet Aaron Heilman is sstill a Met next year. I’ll bet Schoenweis and Sanchez are around as well. I have this strange feeling that a much needed ‘blow up’ of this team just won’t happen. It should have happened at the beginning of this year. How many of these types of seasons do we need for that to happen? Three? Four? Get some better relief pitchers!!!
curios thought……. where is Carlos Muniz? Jerry and not used the kid at all.
Listen, you cannot argue that this team has “resilience” or “guts” or “heart” when they MAIL IT IN for game 160, tied for a playoff spot.
THEY
MAILED
IT
IN.
What kind of team doesn’t even show up when it counts the most?
meet the mets
How many years did it take the Mets to get rid of Bonilla? Or Steve Phillips?
At least those guys have WS appearances
That’s about as useful as saying Luis Castillo deserves to stay here because he won a world series ring with the Marlins.
The team takes a long time to realize mistakes and get rid of guys when they are on the decline and/or if the same players stink it up year after year.
They’re still paying Bonilla.
How do you mail in coming out of Willies coffin and 30 blown saves? No less than twelve of which where locked down solid 2-3 run leads or more after 8 innings.
No one buys your Mail It In. Angry. You hate the team, we get it, why not just move on, forever.
curios thought……. where is Carlos Muniz? Jerry has not used the kid at all.
Jerry Manuel is afraid Muniz will catch what the rest of the bullpen has caught. “stinkitupitis.” It’s really simple to explain, you put a guy out there for a few outings and eventually he won’t be able to throw a strike, walk people and give up game tying – winning hits to the opposing team.
There’s always this debate on here that mental toughness is overrated and that execution is the problem. I argue that one definitely impacts the other. Execution requires focus. If you’re mentally tough, you eliminate the distractions on the field, you realize that you might have guys behind you who can knock in runs, you realize that all you might need to do is shorten up and not swing for the fences, you realze that you need to follow the runner ahead of you in a double steal, etc. Your mentally all there, your focused and you execute.
Aside from that, this team does need to be bloodthirsty vs. these guys. I see nothing wrong with being emotional. Look at the Marlins, the Phillies. They wear their emotions on their sleeves and it’s worked.
I don’t think the Wilpons’ want those types of players.
I know. There’s no way we’re getting Manny. :(
after tonight, if I was Manuel….
You guys are a bunch of sissies, not gangstas! I hope we lose the next two because I don’t even want to think about coming back next year to manage a bunch of punks. You’re lucky Church turned into houdini for a second – and lucky that Reyes scored – what the phuck were you thinking about when you stopped on a line drive with two outs?
You guys got lucky to beat the triple A Cubs.
Screw you guys, I’m going home.
Season over. The seaon was over when they couldnt drive in Murphy from 3rd with no one out 2 nights ago. This team is a disgrace.
I have said this a number of times but I will say it again. I love the Mets. I bleed them. I have gone to every saturday game for 6 years. I have never hated a Met team till this year. They have taken the joy out of watching baseball. I would rather go back to 2003 than watch this team play.
There is zero chance The mets win the next 2 games. I hope 2009 brings some fresh faces, more players like Murphy who know how to HIT.
I agree with you 100%. It is not fun anymore to watch this team. They have no heart. I thought after last night they’d come out and put on an offensive show. But we all know they didn’t and now their season will end on Sunday. How anticlimatic to close Shea stadium with another collapse.
I agree. What current Met player do you get excited to see come up or pitch when it’s do or die? None. Zero.
I can’t even name my favorite player. I guess Pelfry? Johan?
I don’t really have a ton of confidence in either of them though.
Which Met do you have confidence in? Or which player do you think, wow, I want to be just like him?
I got nothing on this team.
I’ll say Johan Santana and I say that now, because if he doesn’t do well tomorrow, it’s not his fault really, because he threw the most pitches he’s ever thrown in a game and he’s being asked to come back on 3 days rest, although the stats go against it. Still, if he does well, it even proves it more. The guy has gone out and given his all every game and nearly pitched a quality start and then-some, every friggin time. He is a 5 tool player – pitch, run, field, hit and THINK! He doesn’t lose his cool. When he does get mad or is in a stressful situation, he keeps it together. He is still in his prime. He has adjusted to the Mets and NY very well. There are pretty much no superstars that I can think of, certainly in recent years, who didn’t have an awkward first few months or season when they joined our team (Examples – Piazza, Beltran both getting booed during their early Met slumps). He has been as advertised from the start. This guy is our ace and just in case something bad happens tomorrow, I will state that for the record. Yes, be proud of him and I now am giving him props. OK, Doc Gooden had a better season or two than he has had and others too, like maybe David Cone, but he has been money and would have won 21 games or so, if he had offense and bullpen behind him. He deserves our praise and gratitude!
Here is the thing, when they lost 2 against the Braves it was the start of the end, then they lost 2 more against the NATS and the fat lady was getting warm in the wings. Then when we lost the first game to the Cubs and lost ground with the Brewers allowing them to tie with us and gain ground on the Phillies who lost, she started belting out a song. That was the point when our seson ended. IF we had won that game after the Phillie loss we would have been tied with the phillies going into last nights game. And the biggets blow of all was last night when the Cubs lost and the Nats lost and the Mets lost. GAME OVER. Now the METS dont mean anything at all. Just watch the Cubs game and if they win check the METS score because it dont matter what the METS do if the Cubs loose.
First of all, the Mets did not lose to the Cubs tonight as stated by Nichols. In case you didn’t see the poor excuse of a showing tonight, our Mets showed up flat and lost to the Marlins 6-1. Also, the Mets only have a 3 game series, not a 4 game series with Marlins this weekend.

Too lazy/drunk to bother to read if somebody else made this point, but who cares whether Heilman or Smith or my one armed 80 year old neighbor came into pitch that inning?
The damage was done 4 batters in. The offense didn’t show up tonight at all, whether we gave up 2 or 200 runs wouldn’t have mattered, since we only scored a measley ONE RUN off of CHRISTOPHER VOLSTAD.
*tries to hold vomit*
Hey, the Liberty are in the finals. That has to count for something, right?
Women’s sports count for nothing
I take that back, but the WNBA counts for nothing
the liberty wouldve scored more than 1 off of chris volstad.
Who in here truly believes we will get into the playoffs?
We lost that chance on Wednesday night.
Looking at this team, even a win on Wednesday would probably not work. They would likely fold all weekend anyway. They are still paying on the deal with the devil they made in 1986 when the ball went past Buckner. Remember, they started paying that debt in 87 when the whole staff was hurt in September, in 88 went Scoscia went deep on Doc and have been paying ever since. Maybe when they blow up the stadium, the curse will end
Me, Cubs aren’t getting swept. Lou Pinella will not allow that to happen. He wants to win and probably wants to play us in the playoffs rather than the Dodgers seeing as if he played the “A’ team against us we would have been swept. Johan has been nothing short of amazing this year especially in the second half. Sheets is coming off an injury and hasn’t pitched in a while. I really believe that if we are winning or have won when the Brewers take the field tomorrow, Sunday’s game will matter in some capacity. On Sunday, final day at Shea, I think pure emotion will carry the team and we will see a Monday playoff. Maybe I’m just blind because the Mets are all I’ve got (Jets-not looking good, Knicks-Joke, Rangers- can’t win in the playoffs, Rutgers 0-3). If for nothing other than selfish reasons I think the Mets are going to the playoffs. LETS GO METS. I still have hope.
this team is soft, weak, and done
what’s the record with 17 games left?
Congrats to the phillies, they SHOW UP to big games while the mets get on the bus
ya gotta believe bull$hit
and teams like the Marlins show up in garbage time just to beat the Mets. i guess you have to give them credit for that
all I read all day was quotes about how the marlins wanted to beat the mets yet there were no quotes about how the mets wanted to stick it to the marlins
Because everyone knows you play better when you tell the media that you’re gonna stick it to the other guy.
I guess so look at the score
The proper response would have been something like:
“Of course they get off on beating us — what else have they got, they play in front of 800 people a night. Jacobs and LoDuca would rather be in NY than in Florida, trust me.”
Evans needs to be in the lineup tomorrow in the two spot, Murphy has been somewhat awful hitting and fielding wise right now.
who cares
wow, what an awful fan you are. seriously, you never have anything positive to say.
again who cares? All the positive bs in the world won’t make a difference
if you don’t care, why post here? seems like you care to me. seems like you WANT them to lose.
Speaking of “Ya Gotta Believe”
You sorry lemmings with your “BELIEVE” and your “LETS GO METS” and all the rest of that idiocy……..
Amazing how all of it didn’t ya a bit of good.
Funny that.
Your “belief” means nothing.
We have zero impact on the game.
The sooner you people stop feeling OBLIGATED to “believe” and realize you can actually express an opinion other than hero worship, the better
amen bro
You two aren’t fans. See you next year, when the Mets are in the playoffs and you magically reappear.
Even IF the METS make the playoffs, how far do you think they can get? We have no pen and no closer as if thats not enough or offense only shows up %50 of the time and our starting pitching is not consistant. So PLEASE tell me how in world we can beat a real baseball team?
You know, reading all that blather actually made me feel much more optimistic than I did before. The Mets might absolutely stink, but if that’s the price I have to pay to get you and the other toolbag a-hole “fans” away from my team, fair deal.
agreed.
Remember the Braves in the playoffs 13 years in a row? How many rings do that have to show, ONE !! Is making the playoffs and loosing better than not making them at all? I only want to feel that my team can win, thats all. If they loose, oh well. Like in 2006 I was sure that Floydd would come through and when he didnt I though Beltran will do it and we lost. I was not as upset then as I have been the last 2 years. This team seems to have given up and that bothers me. I have no faith or confidence that they can win and once they loose the lead i fell its game over. Even if they have a lead and the starter leaves the game and the pen comes in, again I am more confident that they will blow it than hold it. That is the problem. That pedro game was the mets season, The starter comes out in a tie game and the pen comes in. The first pitch is a three run HR. I just want to beleive and this team makes it hard to do. They have not earned it at all. Look at the empty seats last night? That says it all.
AMEN ANDREW
Hopefully some of the bandwagon jumpers that came aboard since the past few years will finally start to bail.
1999, 2000, and 2006 were probably the best years of my life as a Mets fan. As I’ve stated I’m only 21, but being part of a crowd of people that were genuinely EXCITED AND THRILLED to be competing, and were rooting for this team good or not, was awesome.
Since 2006, there’s been all kinds of booing and nonsense that has pissed me off to no end, and I realized that the Mets have become very Yankee-esque fan base wise. Furioso is a perfect example of this. The sooner they’re gone, the better.
As I’ve stated I’m only 21, but being part of a crowd of people that were genuinely EXCITED AND THRILLED to be competing
You see, I remember watching back in the day when the Mets didn’t compete, they actually won.
Maybe you’re “thrilled” just to compete.
Man, you lemmings have extremely low standards.
You know what you are? You’re freaking ROYALS fans.
They’re slap happy to compete also
PS- That means I’ve been with this team since the 80’s (god knows why!) but I’m no bandwagon.
Some of us simply demand better than what the rest of you are willing to accept
Of course I’d love to win the World Series every year, but I don’t expect to because I’m not a Yankees fan, unlike you.
“Your season has come”
“This is a championship team”
I’m only having the expectations the Mets organization themselves have.
But you know what? WHAT IS SO BAD ABOUT “EXPECTING TO WIN”???
YOU SAY THAT AS IF IT IS A TERRIBLE THING.
You are so beaten down you actually accept this loser mantra “expectintg to win is bad”
THE HE<L<L IT IS
Yeah, thrilled to be competing, as in playing in NLCS’ and World Series, and winning. Winning it all can’t happen every year, but they were very successful those years, and the fans reacted.
At some point, there becomes deminishing returns. With back to back winning seasons, with big signings, comes bandwagon fans. Fans that feel entitled to have a World Series champ or they boo. Whatever, I don’t even know where I’m going here, but I’ve seen PLENTY of years of losing seasons. I’ve still rooted them on. I will still. You want to hate all the players, go ahead. It won’t do anything, you’re a piece of trash that has no effect over anything that happens by hating everyone, so you might as well start liking them or find a new team with players to like.
You’re a bum dude.
There are 30 other teams out there and baseball is in large part a game of luck. So yeah, expecting to win is unrealistic because the guys on your team can’t be expected to be supermen. Does that mean I’m satisfied? Of course not. But people like you overreact and place blame on people who don’t deserve it and shout and boo and altogether make the experience of being a fan of the game less pleasant.
Better a bum with my own opinion than a lemming running with the “YA GOTTA BELIEVE” crowd.
And hey! You believe, and you got jack outta that.
And David Wright isn’t even gonna hang out with you or nothing.
Funny how that works.
“being a fan of the game less pleasant.”
What a load.
You know what makes the game pleasant?
Hmmmmmmmm.
Yeah, so believing is a bad thing man? This team has been a part of my life since I was a kid. My dad worked his tail off, and our weekend trips to Shea were a good way to spend time together. An hour car ride there and back, 2 hours in the first row right along the right field foul line, and a full game together. Those are great memories I have, created by this team, which created a fan out of me. And the whole time, he taught me to believe in your team, and to enjoy every minute at the games, especially with my dad, because when my dad was a kid in 62, his dad, my grandfather, was outside Shea parking cars at Willets Point and never ONCE went to a Mets game with my dad as a kid.
I love it when they win, but I guess this last year at Shea made me a little more nostalgic than previously. I’d love the wins, but if you can’t find any joy in anything else, I feel very sad for you. I want playoff baseball, and I’m going to root for this team the whole way, and if they don’t make it, I’ll say goodbye to this stadium, be very upset, but know that there’s always next year.
hey Angry, if you are just 21 you have NOT been with this team since the 1980s and you have NOT ever seen them compete.
Even the team post 1986 was based on their roster/talent was a huge disappointment the following 4 seasons, including a very disappointing follow up to 86 and a huge gag job to a much more hungry and give it all Dodgers team.
So when exactly did you see this team compete? In the late 1990s when they choked to the Braves every year? In 2000 when they thought they won the World Series by beating the Cardinals who beat the Braves for them?
Unless you have existed in an alternate universe you have seen very little.
I suspect based on your age that your memories of 1999 and 2000 are largely clouded by having been about 12 or 13 years old, the same way for a long time I once thought that 1987 and 1988 were actually good seasons.
In time you will come to realize that you are romanticizing failure no matter how you try to butter the bread.
Except I’m a better fan than you, I’m not going anywhere.
You’re a fan because you feel obligated.
I despise the players on this team, but I still want them to win.
So watch who you call “fan”……because you’re the one who’ll leave first
Haha, I feel obligated? Maybe you can try that line out on some other folks, buddy, but don’t come to me with that. I want you to go and find one instance when I so much as implied that I felt obligate to support the team or certain players.
You don’t have to bother looking, though, because you won’t find any.
Unlike you, however, I’m capable of expressing my dissatisfaction in ways that don’t make me sound like a complete idiot.
YA GOTTA BELIEVE!
Except I never said “Ya gotta believe.” Tug McGraw did.
Of course, there’s no point in NOT believing; to me, there’s no pleasure in winning if you go in thinking you’re going to lose. I mean, sure, it’s a nice surprise, but you tend to feel like you didn’t earn it. Better to believe and be disappointed — such is our destiny as Mets fans — than to quit believing and engage in the sort of mindless negativity that has so damaged the experience of attending many professional sporting events.
Eh, I see very little point in believing, because they’re unworthy of even a modicum of faith.
You don’t like negativity, move to UnicornRainbow land
There’s negativity and there’s the mindless bashing you engage in, where even when they’re winning they can’t do anything right in your eyes. If you can’t see the difference, what can I say? You’re dumb.
Ok here’s the thing. I DO NOT live in NY or close to it at all. I am 5 hours away and it cost hundreds to attend a game. I had the most fun in the 04 – 05 sesason as they where nOT going to win and when we went to a game and they won it was like WOW !!!! THey where not playing for anything. I went down a few times in 2006 and it was GREAT. I was at Big Pelfs first start. It was a DH against the Marlins and it started with 2 3 run HRs and a Grand Slam by Valetine and it was great. I have not been to a game this season at all. I dont think they can win and the way they loose is heart breaking.
Its funny you would say that because i was recently having a conversation with a friend of mine who is a red sox fan and he was telling me that he wanted his team to lose for a couple years as well because of all the front running band wagon riding, dont really give a crap about the team and what it means to be a true fan fans that the sox have been adding. Last night hurt. ALOT. But so did last year, as did 2006, so did 1999 and 2000, and before that the entire 90’s, and every year in the 80’s other than 86, which actually was hurting right up til the tenth inning of game six and before that i was just a little kid without a clue about what a met was. Look, its the price of being a Met fan. Yes this team lacks. In the pen, in the clutch hitting department, in the tough guy department, the play with an attitude department. But this is our team. If you dont watch today’s game and root for that team, you are a fairweather fan and thats really no fan at all. You cant enjoy the sweet unless you experience the bitter and the mets are pretty good at giving us bitter. But we could be cubs fans…..we only have what, 78 more years to go before we understand what that is like? Grow up met fans, cheer your team on today and if they lose, cheer them tomorrow. Cuz we are mets fans. Thats what we do
Wow. Sure is a lot of anger here tonight. I wonder if the Mets lost? I couldn’t watch cause of black out rules here in Florida, like anyone watches the Fish on tv, sheesh. Anyway when I heard that Pelf had given up two runs in first, I had a bad feeling especially after seeing on line the opp in the first few inn that the Mets coughed up. Church had a good game yesterday but today is when we needed a hit and not a dp. Hey it is not Reyes fault that he has been on base between hits and walks over 250 times yet he has scored only 109 runs, less than wright and beltran. Why? Cause when he is on Wright has not driven him in and Beltran and Delgado, until the last month, were not either. Wow. What a downer yet, I will not curse them or call them names cause this still just a game played by adults paid a lot of money. They want to produce cause it affects what they get paid, yet sometimes you try to hit a 5 run homer when all that is needed is a sac fly or a ground ball. Missed opportunities all around. When I saw Heilman come in I asked WHY? Why is Jerry giving away the game? I know that Smith worked last night but a less than 100% Smith is better than 120% Heilman, Sanchez, Shoe, Stokes, etc. Still I will vent whatever the out come this weekend and after and then start to think about ‘09 cause in spite of loss or no post season, these are my Mets stinking or good. They have provided plenty of heartache and entertainment over the years so I will still support them and not call them names cause what does that serve?
Every time I see those “deer-in-headlights” look on their faces I don’t know whether I should scream or cry. It’s like those guys don’t believe in themselves. I never thought I would say this, but I miss those days when the Mets constantly lived in the division cellar. At least then we didn’t have to live with the consequences of crushed hope. Dave Kingman … WHERE ARE YOU? :-(
Just to prove I can show some positivity-
All props to Johan. As advertised. Too bad they wasted him this year and threw a potential Cy Young away.
And D Murphy has a very nice future ahead of him as the Mets 2b.
Niese has a nice future also.
But f**k everyone else on this gutless choke team
Just imagine if the bullpen had only blown 2-3 of the games Johan left with the lead. We would have already won the division…
Dude, remember Reyes and Wright and Big Pelf are all still many years from their primes.
I need a postseason, so I’m going to become a Rays fan for the next few weeks. They are a team that’s easy to root for. They’re never out of a game. When they’re down, they battle back. They play with enthusiasm. They knocked off the Yankees and Red Sox this year.
The bandwagon is leaving the station Met fans. Hop on board.
Let’s Go Rays!
No matter how bad it looks, I’m not picking a team to root for in the playoffs until my team has an E next to their name in the Standings.
I’ve rooted for the Rays for a few years internally. They seem to be building themselves the same way the Mets of the late 60s and 80s did. Plus, Joe Maddon is a genius.
If the Mets don’t make it, I’m going to become the biggest bandwagon Rays fan there is for a few weeks. I really think this playoff is going to be awesome, so many big markets involved.
LA, Boston, Chicago, Philly, Minnesota and hopefully New York, and Tampa.
I really think these playoffs are going to be great from a baseball point of view, and hopefully our team will be involved.
Hey………There’s still two more games and any thing can happen, but if they don’t make the playoffs AGAIN this year because of folding under pressure , then the verdict will finally be in on this team. The fan base and ALL of baseball for that matter will be the judge and Jury and the verdict is………………………………………………….The NY Mets are a team full of Chokers”.
It’s really that simple folks, can’t sugar coat no it matter how much you try.
We could of convinced our selves that last year was a fluke, but it’s becoming painfully obvious that it wasn’t.
2nd worse team money can buy (Yankees are first).
I hate to try to rationalize it like this but this isn’t a choke. We were down 8.5 during this season. Last year was a choke when we were in first all year. I always hate to say that the media has a bias because I don’t think its true but I’m tired of hearing about the Mets “choking”. The White Sox have been in first for an awful long time and just got swept by the team chasing them yet all we hear about is how bad we are.
We hear about it more because of the simple fact that we’re in NY. Also, being part of the Biggest Collapse in baseball History last year is a stigma that the Mets will have a very hard time living down. From now on, even if they blow only a 2 game lead, they will be called chokers because of 2007. It’s not fair, but they brought this all onto themselves.
they had a 4 game (loss) lead in early Sept and a 3 game WC lead in Mid sept……………DUDE THAT IS A CHOKE STOP IT
anyway, we disagree on the definition of Choking. We were 3.5 games up (4 in the loss) with 17 to play (there’s that number again). Even worse, we were 5.5 games up on the Brewers for the WC. In my book, that’s a choke, not a monumental one like last year, but a choke non the less. It doesn’t matter that at some point in the season we were down 7.5 games, you don’t have to be in first place all season from start to finish in order to choke. To me what counts is where you are when September rolls around.
when were we 5.5 up on the Brewers, exactly? The Brewers had a 5.5 game lead over us on August 13. On August 31, the Brewers had a 4.5 game lead over us. The biggest lead we ever had over the Brewers was 3.5, on May 19th. The biggest lead we had in September was 2.5, on Sept. 19 & 20th.
I know you hate this team, but stop making stuff up to make them look worse than they really are.
I CAN’T BELIEVE METSBLOG ATE MY COMMENT
seriously why can’t this be fixed
Happens to me all the time. God forbid I ever say that a player (straw action)s, because the filter snatches that right up. I guess too many people can’t be trusted to avoid cursing their heads off here.
I’m so tired
get some rest then.
TO ALL:
Please dont be disappointed with me or be upset. Its just an opinion i hope you all can respect it.
I have officially give up. RIP 2008 METS. IT WAS GREAT, DISAPPOINTED, EXCISING, CHEERFUL, & HURTFUL 2008 SEASON.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. HOPE TO ONLY SEE DWRIGHT, JREYES, JSANTANA, & MPELFERY NEXT YEAR. HOPE EVERYONE ELSE IS GONE…
1985METS
And Beltran.
And I’ll take Church back.
And Murphy.
And Delgado because Texy is too expensive.
And Maine.
And Joe Smith.
And Endy Chavez.
Maybe even Angel Pagan.
Endy?? Why would you keep his useless bat?
Other than that and maybe Pagan, I would keep everyone listed in these posts.
Replace Ollie Perez with Derek Lowe, sign K-Rod, sign Juan Cruz, sign 1 or 2 other relievers, dump everyone else, and next year, you should have a much improved team.
Endy’s glove is valuable and he’s an excellent bunter, which — although I despise small ball — is valuable on a team that has had some problems doing the little things.
“is valuable on a team that has had some problems doing the little things.”
I would hope that whoever is managing the team next spring will demand that the players learn how to do the little things, learn how to play situational baseball, learn how to run the bases and play smart baseball. I really believe if the fan base saw that type of baseball the booing would become minimal. But then what the hell do I know.
Who the h.e.l.l. is Juan Cruz?
Righty reliever. Arizona.
Andrew, I like all those players too buddy but you can’t bring the whole team back next year. They are all good on paper and put up good numbers but they don’t have the chemistry of a championship team. It’s not just my opinion, but many baseball analyists (some who follow the Mets very closely) agree that you can’t keep thjis team intacked, you have to break it up and bring in fresh blood.
With a half-decent bullpen, this team wins the NL East EASILY.
Chemistry does not enter into it.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that chemistry is about as important in baseball as it is in golf.
i have come to terms with Jose Reyes. i would not shed a tear if the mets are able to trade him for two solid pitching prospects and one catching prospect in return this off season. i hope the Yankees do not find a way to trade for Reyes like the Mets did with Mike Piazza and Florida.
i want to see Wright, Santana, Pelfrey, Murphy, Beltran, Maine, Evans, Church, Niese, Smith, Parnell, Delgado, Schneider, and Maybe Tatis return next year.
Ugh, I could do without Schneider for sure. Guy is just barely a better #8 hitter than Rey Ordonez was.
i would rather live with schneider actually being on the field to catch the pitcher instead of castro, who just cannot stay healthy.
Conventional wisdom going into the weekend was the Mets needed to go 2-1 to force a Monday Play off with the Brewers. Tonight needs to be the 1.
Hard to have good vibes though. Three Septembers in a row we’ve played bad ( 2006 we just had a big lead ).
Still, alive with 2 games left in the season is better than many Septembers I’ve spent as a Mets fan.
I agree with you BUT whats the point to have all the BUILT UP for NOTHING,
NO WILDCARD
NO DIVISION
2 yrs allready.
I will be in the MARLINS place and BE THE SPOLIERS.
IN THE END WE HAVE NOTHING,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
WE HAVE NOTHING!!!!!!!!
As bad as the team was, the fans were worse. Shame on us.
There were at least 20,000 empty seats. I don’t care about the rain forecast. We gave a lackluster effort. Given the fact that this is the last weekend at Shea, it almost makes me feel like an Atlanta fan.
do you really think if there were 20,000 more people there they would have won?
I think it would have been a different environment.
you still haven’t said if you were there
things almost certainly wouldn’t have been different, but it would have been nice to see those seats filled.
“We gave a lackluster effort”
Quoting Wright or Delgado?
THE FANS HAVE NO IMPACT ON THE GAME
The fans have no impact on the game? Ask the 86 Mets if the fans mattered. Did you hear Piazza today during the game?
were you there?
Shame on us?
Why? We pay a few hundred to go to the game and eat $10 hotdogs, while these guys make $200 per minute. I oppose booing – but this team deserves it.
i was there, screaming my nads off. were you there? or were you sitting on your fat rear?
Yeah, shame on the fans.
Well, the battered life always has to blame herself after she gets her black eye.
The Yankees game last friday was completely full…for a team that underachieved the entire season. The mets deserve better. so yes, SHAME ON US.
Just reading the recap – why even mention the bullpen?!? The Mets scored ONE RUN! One run on a ground out. Heilman shouldn’t even be mentioned in this post-game recap – where the eff was the offense? did Henderson come back for the final weekend at Shea and start a card game in the dugout?
Yes, the bullpen is the overall picture of the season – but come on, this offense is to blame the last few losses.
Poor Pelfrey – where the heck were the big hits? Punks.
Hanley Ramirez gets pumped playing the Mets. It was like the Mets weren’t ready for the aggressive way the he and the Marlins came out in the first inning. How could the Mets not be ready for a pumped up Marlins team? Two batters into the game we were already losing.
The Marlins hate the Mets. Why? I just don’t get it really. There was Milledge last year. And Reyes’ dances annoy teams. But why do the Marlins of all teams, take such offense to the Mets?
LOL…I love that earlier comment: Mets, only the 2nd worst team money can buy.
The thing that just drives you crazy is that for three years in a row now this team has limped across the finish line and it looks like for the last two years died at the finish line. In 06 they lost Duque and Pedro and had to start two novices in Perez and Maine in big playoff games. Last year the pitching collapsed again and they were starting Phillip Humber in big time September games. Then this year we’ve got Jon Neise, Brandon Knight and beat up Pedro along with Ayala closing etc…in big time September games. They need to figure out how to build a team that can last 162 games and beyond and not 145 or 120 games.
Amen. When will this team stop relying on players who break down with injury? El Duque, Pedro, Easley, Moises, Wagner….
It’s been this way 3 years running now!!
Hey, where is El Duque? Throw him out there on Sunday!
it doesn’t even hurt anymore.
It will be nice to watch real baseball again once the playoffs start, two complete teams going after each other.
How come no one talks about the Mets injuries this year? El Duque, Pedro, Church, Castillo, Alou, just to mention a few. These were five guys who were supposed to be mainstays of the 2008 team and ended up giving very little or nothing. I actually think, after this year is over, people will look back and see that the mets could have done much worse. Imagine if we never had Tatis or Murphy.
Now is not the time for this spin.
Take your Wilpon/Minaya press releases and hold on until Nov.
It’s not spin. The Mets have four offensive stars….Wright, Reyes, Beltran Delgado…the other five men that come up each night are not. This team has a great core, with a liquid exterior.
I wouldn’t exactly call Castillo an offensive star!! LOL
Other teams had injuries as well. I believe the Rays had their share of injuries.
there should be no excuses, injuries are part of the game. a good team over come these type of things no matter what.
because, aside from church, ALL OF THOSE INJURIES WERE OBVIOUS.
also, castillo’s injury helped the team.
If you look at the comments made tonight and the comments made exactly one year ago they are pretty much the same and we are pretty much in the same position we were in a year ago. A game out of a playoff spot.
Am I the only one that things Teflon Minaya is getting off easy here. The Mets biggest weakness in 07 was the bullpen and what is the biggest 08 weakness????????? the bullpen.
The bullpen will be addressed in 2013 by Omar’s replacement. Just be patient.
How correct you are. So we bring in Santana and we still finish one game out? Can’t make this sh….it up. Omar not only is getting off easy, but he received a contract extension to boot!!! LOL. Only my Mets.
an alternate perspective, from my blog, above:
“…the brewers aren’t gonna win the next two games on short rest. and if they do, they ran the table and they deserve the wild card. but if they don’t, we have to win two – one with the best pitcher on earth, and one with all the other pitchers on earth – and then let the chips fall where they may.
it’s not the best of odds, but, compared to two out, nobody on, down by two, it’s not so bad.
shea has never given us anything without a fight. and she’s not gonna start now.”
we got all winter to mope and cry, and a whole lifetime without shea. but we only got one or two more days to fight.
If only any of the Met players felt that way, it might make a difference.
“shea has never given us anything without a fight. and she’s not gonna start now.”
Actually, Shea has barely given us anything.
But keep up with your lemming spin.
lol. when you’re calling me a lemming, you’re already off the cliff.
It’s ok. Next April, Reyes will be back to filling the stat sheet, clapping his hands and dancing at home, the salsa on the loud speaker at Citi Field and we’ll all be jumping up and down proclaiming THIS is the year we win it all.
Sound familiar?
Actually, it’s Merengue, not salsa!
JUST a question if you all have a chance to go back and to sign
SANTANA or fix he BULLPEN which one will you guys do????
FEB 2008:
PICK UP santana or fix your bullpen?
Deal Wright
I’m sure you’re the same person who said, “deal reyes” last year, “deal beltran” in 2006 and “sign Zito” in 2006.
Amen. I can’t take his look of fear and panic every time he comes up in crucial spots.
It reminds me of another NY thirdbaseman.
Wright, A-Rod and Papi all have the same career RISP. The notion of “clutch” is media driven.
Please remove your head from your rear end.
You are incredibly stupid. It’s like talking to a monkey.
Uh… Santana, because he keeps the team competitive in the long term, whereas middle relief pitchers tend to be good one year and not the next.
ok santana WON 17 games or BULLPEN has cause us 30″S odd games..
I think Minaya should have address the bullpen as a priority….
We don’t have a season without Santana. Remember early in the year when we had a bad Maine, Perez, Pelfrey, and go only knows who as the 5th starter?
The Met PR department should earn combat pay for having to devise a happy slogan for 2009.
“2009 Mets — Citi Field’s Amenities and Four Star Food Service Will Make You Less Likely to Feel Thoughts of Suicide This September”
” a new beginning ” Watch the mets get resurrected in their new field
This really sux!
Ladies and gents….
truthfully…im a diahrd fan, ive been angry all year..
its like my parents told me growing up…
“im not mad…im disappointed”
ill be at the game tomorrow. ill never wuit on these mets..but ill root my heart out…and pray for the best, i have a feeling about these guys. theyll win hte next two…but me need more than that at this point.
cmon cubs…give us a chance
Anybody see any post game interviews?
Mets will play tomorrow, and win. Milwaukee is going to lose tomorrow. Both win Sunday. Mets win the one game playoff.
As good a possibility as any. I’m on board for that. If that does happen, and the Mets go on to the playoffs and get hot and make it to the WS, what are all these posters on here going to say? something like ” I was just kidding, I believed all along deep down inside they were going to make it”. LOL
I genuinely think they will. I’m not an optimistic person when it comes to the Mets but I don’t know, I just don’t think that it ended tonight. Baseball is amazing. The season has been over how many times this year? When Johan didn’t go out for the 8th in Philly… when the Mets gave up 6 runs in the 9th against the Phils at Shea… two nights ago… when Billy gave up the homer to Tony Clark in SD…
As bad as today is, tomorrow there is no reason that they can’t win with Milwaukee losing. And then it is even again. We’ll see.
Yep, there are many different scenarios that could happen between now and Monday. But they all hinge on the brewers at least losing one game. It’s no longer in the Mets control, they need help from the Cubbies.
LETS MAKE A POLL
WHO IN HERE THINKS THE METS WILL WIN TOMORROW

Definitely going to win.
If Brandon Knight pitches tomorrow, I am going to spaz.

Suspend reality for a second…although I don’t think they’re gonna end up getting in, imagine how awesome it would feel if they end up tied with Milwaukee and there’s a one game playoff with the Brewers for the final game at Shea and we win. I’m not saying it will, ’cause it won’t….but if it did, all of this grief would actually be worth it.
In the world of a NON collapse team YES. Otherwise i dont see it happening
If that does happen, and the Mets go on to the playoffs and get hot and make it to the WS, what are all these posters on here going to say? something like ” I was just kidding, I believed all along deep down inside they were going to make it”. LOL

I haven’t given up yet.
Yeah I’m annoyed and disappointed that they won’t sweep the Marlins but if they can take the next two they still have a shot. What are the chances that the Brewers will sweep the Cubs?? And you never know..the Phillies may lose the next 2 games.
It ain’t over yet people.
There are still 2 games left. let’s see what happens tomorrow before we give up.
What if the Phiilies WIN tomorrow and the Brewers win also, Then WHAt?
Then we have better won tomorrow, or it’s done!
Actually, we’ll win tomorrow. Luckily, the brew crew will lose tomorrow. And we’ll both lose on Sunday, forcing a 1 game playoff on Monday. Which we’ll win of course and go to the playoffs. So many crazy scenarios!
1
but i get this weird feeling that sunday, if perez pitches…the mets are going to lose.
Ollie will throw a 1-hit shut out
i hope i am 110% wrong about sunday’s game.
its 2006 all over again.. lets go ollie….lol.. Hes not worth whats hes gona be asking…
Ollie is due for a good game!
Still, I don’t want him back w/ the Mets; I don’t.
All of a sudden, I’m getting a good feeling about this weekend.
LOOK who in here THINKs that the METS can go far with this BULLPEN.
im sorry its not happening man… WE really hurt in the pen.
Its great that you all are positive but come on. LOOK at the entire season…. What has our team PROVED…… NOTHING
They have proved that our BP really sux and we still have 88 wins.
as a really awesome sidebar, the yanks are going to tie our won-loss record tonight
I respect all of YOU, Hope the METS feel the same way
BUt mentally they dont… ITs more about the mind now. Its not physical any longer.
I know they FEAR so much. And FEAR is very contagious…
Ok let’s look at this from a mental point of view then…
The marlins are a young team, they crushed the mets tonight, so chances are they are going to go out tonight and get plastered. Expect many of them to be hungover tomorrow!
A short story….. “Heilman’s Redemption”
Santana leads the Mets to victory on Saturday. On Sunday, Jerry Manuel, pressed to find a starter for Sunday’s game gives Aaron Heilman the chance he’s been wanting for so long…. To start in a game. Heilman proceeds to throw 7 innings of 3 hit ball, the Mets win and force a one game playoff with the Brewers. Heilman is forgiven by Mets fans for a horrible 2008 season for this clutch perforamnce. Mets enter the post-season and do well. Heilman becomes a starter for the Mets in ‘09 and wins 17 games.
Yeah, and Luis Castillo hits a game winning walk-off HR. Sure, why not. LOL
Actually…and castillo finds a way to get a hit through the infield. Sure, that’ll happen.
And the Angels lose to theTwins
I can almost guarantee you guys a One game playoff on Monday. But I can’t guarantee who will win it.
REally like what you have to say, MAybe this whole optimism is contagious…
Just a gut feeling, nothing more. But I have been watching the Mets since 1968 and I have seen just about every crazy situation imaginable. I’ve learn to expect the unexpected, and trust me, the way this season has gone, what’s going to happen over the next three days is not what you think will happen. I would just watch the games and enjoy it.
Exactly. You never know what is going to happen. The perfect storyline in 06 was Endy makes the catch most people thought it was destiny for us to win. Especially when he came up with the bases loaded. However, baseball never gives you what you expect. Lets Go Mets.
yea between the white sox and the twins
Furioso Love the NY Mets. He knows they will win tomorrow. He’s an unrepentant, wife-beating lemming.
Furioso love David Wright and Hot Dogs w/ lots of sauerkraut!
Furioso will streak across the outfield tomorrow night and kiss Carlos Beltran. He’ll then scamper toward first to kiss C. Delgado, and then across to third to embrace D. Wright.
He loves those guys for putting up nearly 350 RBIs–the best by any 3-4-5 in MLB!
What the heck is wrong with us? It is friday night and we are all moping around depressed about tonight’s loss? Why do we care so much about this team? Over the past few years they seem to have only disappointed me. I can’t say that any of the last few seasons has ended with me feeling satisfied. Is that right? This is supposed to be fun, but it really isn’t right now and these losses are completely changing my attitude, disposition, and even relationships with friends. This is not healthy or normal. What is wrong with me?
Well, I’m just here as a pathetic loser who has no life unlike the rest of you successful and beautiful people.
This is definitely more pleasurable than a porno website to boot!
ITS The LOVE of baseball my friend…
Yeah, I think I’m going to watch my dvd of “The Natural” to remind myself why I watch baseball because watching the Mets almost makes me forget why?
great choice. One of the Best baseball flicks..
Field of Dreams for me
WHAT if the Sillies lose their last 2 and Brewers lose their last 2?
And the Mets win their last 2? (see, I can play this game of 2’s also) METS WIN!!!!!!!
Then we better win our 2 so we’ll get to watch the 2 of them battle it out for the wild card.
That is alot of what ifs.
What if we had a bullpen instead of a pigpen. You know what pig pens are full of ? Jesse orosco at 53 could throw better than some of those guys.
psst. its a 3 game series, not 4.
Yeah, that’s unbelievable that the bloggers on this site don’t even know how many games are in the Biggest series of the year! LOL
at least he fixed the post to get the team we played right
seriously, can you guys proofread
Theres only 2 games left
sillies 2
brewers 2…
read try it helps..

God. Please unleash the floods in Queens tomorrow and have Sheets blow out his Elbow. Id much rather see Santana on his reg day and Perez.
Once a Mets fan, always a Mets fan!!! We’ve suffered years of disappointments but when push comes to shove, we all have
a little bit of that “Ya Gotta Believe!” in us. (Although I have to admit that as the years roll by and the disappointments increase, that part of us gets smaller and smaller.
Maemurtha how the heck are we supposed to believe in this team. This team will never win unless there are radical changes to this team. The players are a bunch of chokers. It surprises me that players still think about what happened last year. I don’t think a kid in high school fails a test and then the next week fails another test because he was thinking about his test last week. This team needs a change starting with the manager and all the other coaches. Jerry hasn’t done that much of a better job than Willie. Jerry continues to use Heilman. I mean come on, it isnt lke Aaron is all of a sudden going to do good in one appearence. He is a bad player and doesn’t deserve to pitch the rest of the season whether it be today and tomorrow or during the playoffs.
I don’t know about you guys but I can’t wait another 78 year ((which will be 2086) to see another mets world series in which they win
i cant wait another 1 year
no guts , no playoffs, 4 more for omar!!!!!!!!!
Castro hasn’t made contact in months. Cancel deserves to be playing. Sanchez and heilman shouldn’t suit up.
Omar blew it when he didn’t make any bullpen acquisitions at the deadline, or preseason. why not go after Chad Bradford. why’d he let him walk in the first place?
Omar has made savvy moves no doubt, but he didn’t plug the leaks in the bullpen.
every gm makes a few savy moves….. omar had the $$$$ backing to make all the savy moves he needed….
unsavy move – matt wise and no one else….
in order to force a playoff the mets must either win both their games and have the brewers lose 1 game and/or the phillies lose 2 games or the Mets can win 1 game and the brewers have to lose both their games.
now that the mets have 0 margin for error its almost impossible for the mets to make the playoffs at this point. Wednesday night was the must win game and at 3 diff points in that game the mets left a man on 3rd with nobody out.
Hopefully the mets can finally learn from their mistakes and bring winning ball players to this club and not the top players from losing organizations.
I woke up so depressed today that I thought of running a coping saw over my wrists.
Maybe blowing up Shea will kill this Karma. I love Shea but perhaps the 2007 is going to hang over Shea like ghosts over an Indian burial ground. Its probably time to tear that ole lady down
At least with Santana pitching today, one Met player will have a fired up desire to win a game, maybe he can get a few of them others on board. We are hanging by a hair! I feel like I wanna scream!
Oh ye of little faith!
Santana comes thropugh and the Cubs light up Sheets, and it is the same situation as last year. Win on Sunday, and you are still playing next week. At least Monday.
Team has had a bad year htting in the clutch, but it doesn’t mean that none of the players can. In fact, they have before. So maybe there is a bad vibe surrounding the team, which the fans (and this attitude) sure aren’t helping eliminate. Yes, that means the booing too.
Anyway, for next year, Omar will be fine. He aint the problem. I would say they need to clear cut the coaching staff and start fresh. Get a nice professional outfit in, and do things right.
The Mets also are probably the only contendor that has a heart of the team (the 2 main guys) that are still only 24/25. Reyes and Wright are still working on aproaching their primes, so let them grow into it.
Also next year, new 2B (please let it be Murphy), new catcher (young RH bat, Schneider can be a back up). And other than Smith and Ayala, a new pen.
And the key cog, a big bat for RF that can hit in the clutch. The Mets horribly missed someone like Carlos Lee last year, forget aobut the cotract for the future!
Luis, AH, and a few others do need to go just to clear the air.
But anyway, they will be playing Monday.
schenider and church are going nowhere and hopefully murphy can play 2B which would be perfect. He’d play most of the games and easily would play against the tough lefties.
Then the mets could go out and get a LF (preferably a righthander) most likely raul ibanez though to bat 6th.
too early in the AMl I meant LF bat.
Theoretically, the starting 8 could come back intact, but no way they can try that.
Schneider can be here, but they need a real platoon (or regular) starter, preferably a young one.
Luis and Heilmann need to go of course, just for their own safety!
I know this is the wrong time for next year (since I have not given up on this one), but a couple of key tweaks and they have a good line up, so no ned to write off the franchise.
Murphy taking 2B is key.
all this , hoping cubs win , ye of little faith stuff is a joke ..besides santana this gutless bunch of sh-ts have shown nothing…….
Yes they have. The BP has shown that they don’t have the talent to make it trhough the season.
omar not the problem ..
06- bullpen
07- bullpen
08 – bullpen…
alou
castillo
duque
only mistake omar made was not finding another 40 year old latino to set up for retirement…
Omar is not the problem? Just who put the bullpen together? Its the man who got a 4 year extension. Granted they may not always be used the best but Omar put the pen together and it falls on him!
omar dosent believe in bullpen guys … just 40 yr old outfielders, 40 year old starters and seconed basemen with the legs of a 60 yr old….
did ya ever notice how by sept. were also light on starters … one injury and were scrambling…… dont worry though el duques thrown of flat ground now…
People are so Gloom-and-doom. Realistically… what are the odds of the cubs getting SWEPT by one of their rivals who i’m sure the cubs are adamant about defeating… shoving it to them… with ben sheets pitching today who has a blown arm and could be done almost immediately.
I honestly don’t feel that worried at this point. I believe in Santana, and I think we can take these last 2 games at least from the marlins. Sure a 1 game wildcard playoff could be tough, but I believe we can at least get to that point… I guess today will tell…
And let me add if the mets don’t win these next 2 games… its clear they didn’t want it enough and this team needs to be EXPLODED.
that’s crap that they don’t want it. If anything, some guys (DW in particular) want it too damned bad, and it is making them press.
Why do you think teams that are out of it seem to do well against teams fighting for their life? They feel no pressure.
Well, if the Mets really didn’t care, they wold play just as well as they did the rest of the year (speaking offense here really).
THis has been a talent issue, not a heart or guts issue, particularly with the BP, and not having a real 2B for a month now.
Just wanting something doesn’t mean you are gonna get it!
so you see paul o’niel , wally backman , dykstra types out there right ???
i se guys out there laughing happy to be in the bigs….
do you see desparate at bats……? quality ab’s..? do you se guys digging into their deepest heart to fight out the things…
do you see guys plying on point baseball doing all the lil things it takes to be a winner?
cuz i see guys just taking their hacks HOPING to be a hero ……..
i wish i had your confidence…. but i dont.. not after watching a team that had no buisness coming out flat, come out pancake flat….
but i hope to god your right…….
Looking like 2006 was a fluke…
The team’s too beat up.
The organization looks like a joke…not just in the NL-E but the ENTIRE National League.
This Mets team has made a mocker of itself – and their fans.
If Manuel wanted a comeback in the ninth, why didn’t he pinch-run for Schneider? You had Endy on the bench.
If he made that switch, perhaps the ending play is NOT a double play.
Season. Over.
Anyone know If MLBTV can access today’s game? Will it be blacked out?
every game not on fox is blacked out. i’ll be at work listening (which stinks because if i was home i’d get the game because i live in miami).
Well the blackout restriction says games started AFTER 1:10 and before 7:10.
So, the question is does Aaron Heilman actually get to continue to earn big league pay after this season is over? I mean, he’s not major league caliber anymore. His career should be in serious jeopardy.
I dont think they are going to play today
Not that it looked like they played yesterday
The Mets will win the wild-card! Book it. It’s 9:27 a.m. Saturday. Still believing here!
Congratulations 2008 New York Mets.. your season is over!
Here is how the next 2 days will play out. Guarantee it…
We win easy with Johan tommorrow
Brewers lose because Sheets is a sissy and can’t go long
Ollie starts on short rest tomorrow and gives up 7 runs in the first inning and goes 0.1 innings
CC pitches 140 pitches and a 2 hit sho
Season Over
Go Big Blue
Go Big Blue is right!
What’s up with Plaxico? I saw his fine was reduced to only $118,000. I just vomited. That is one week’s salary.
If not, who do we cheer for? I would say the Red Sox. Simply because Yankee fans were texting me with provoking comments last night. I mean. I don’t get it.
Of course, all I had to say is….”wow, September 26th and Yankee fans are watching a Mets/Marlins game rather than Yanks/Sox”. At the end of the weekend, it is going to be Let’s Go Sawx!!!
id like to go on the record saying that pitching Santana today is a huge mistake b/c even if they win today they need the win tommorow as well.
Hes not going to be able to dominate tonight, hes never done well on short rest.
Figueroa should have gotten the start today and then if the mets lose and milwaukee and philly win then well its over but if the mets were to win without santana today they could pretty much gaurentee a win on sunday with a 100% ready johan santana
There is no reason we should continue on the same path with this current configuration of talent. I do not want to see David Wright Jose Reyes or Carlos Beltran all wearing the same Jersey next season. One of them needs to go! They have let this city down. Trade David Wright to Kansas City where the pressure isn’t so paralyzing. He is no leader! I’m tired of his Sissy attitude. No one respects him or Jose. They laugh at them and at us. We have become a joke. We are a joke.
Omar Minaya might understand how to collect talent but he surly doesn’t know the first thing about leadership. Not one person on that team stood up in that dugout and tried to rally the troops.. Everyone was all nestled away in their Jackets with a sad look on their face.
Omar should really be careful in the next year or so.. He is close to driving Mets fans away from this franchise. You can’t invest emotion and dollars into a team like this. They are Chumps..
Unbelievable, he thinks we have a 4 game series with the Marlins! What an idiot!!!
