Note: Beltran and Delgado move up in Lineup
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 27, 2008 11:47 am

Jerry Manuel will use the following lineup for today’s game against the Marlins in Shea Stadium:

1. SS Jose Reyes
2. OF Carlos Beltran
3. 1B Carlos Delgado
4. 3B David Wright
5. OF Daniel Murphy
6. 2B Ramon Martinez
7. OF Ryan Church
8. C Ramon Castro
9. SP Johan Santana

Hey, why not?  Right?  He may as well change things up, in hopes of getting Beltran and Delgado to the plate more often, while letting Muprhy put the ball in play with, hopefully, more runners on in front of him.

I just want to tell you both good luck. We’re all counting on you.

outside of ny here, is this game going to be played?

  2. wright5murph28 says:

Only thing I would change in that lineup would be Church infront of Martinez, but I’m assuming its to breakup the lefties.

  3. Knuckles99 says:

I think this is a desperate unprove move. My gut is filled with last evening’s chinese food, I hope Manuel’s gut is able to forecast better than mine right now.

These boys better play awesome! Not adequate! Awesome!

  4. khmustache says:

    airplane…nice

  5. Eric1285 says:

I like this order. Murphy has proven he can get hits…why not let him do it with men on? Beltran in the 2 spot should do nicely, with Reyes not getting on at all. I’d rather have him and his speed on early than Murphy.

if our bullpen could have just hold 3 more games……..

    • Furioso says:

If Wright just could’ve hit a FLY BALL in the 9th the other night.

Because THERE”S where the season died

      • dominicanboy08 says:

are you serious? our bullpen killed our season.

      • oleosmirf says:

or not swung at 3-0 and walked to let beltran hit with the bases loaded and no outs instead of church and 1 out

      • SheaByeBye says:

Yup…or Church…I said it then, that was the division, for sure — possibly the season. Looks like it could be the case. You never want to put your destiny in the hands of other teams… Oh well…hopefully, they can force a playoff game on Monday.

  7. Furioso says:

Pretty sad that the lineup for game 161 (desperation) has to be structured around getting Daniel Murphy some RBI chances.

    CHOKERS

  8. Knuckles99 says:

This is a game that we went out and got Sanatana for. Nolasco is good, but we can get to him. I think Marlins will have a hard time getting to Sanatana.

No rain once the game starts. Santana needs to go 8 uninterupted.

    • mdemaio says:

We’ve been saying that about Santana for about a month now…this isn’t on him. If he goes out and gets shelled this game no one can legitimately complain. He should have never been put in this position in the first place.

  9. oleosmirf says:

id like to go on the record saying that pitching Santana today is a huge mistake b/c even if they win today they need the win tommorow as well.

Hes not going to be able to dominate tonight, hes never done well on short rest plus the chances of a rain delay are very high. What happens if they delay the game or postpone it then you wasted santana

Figueroa should have gotten the start today and then if the mets lose and milwaukee and philly win then well its over but if the mets were to win without santana today they could pretty much gaurentee a win on sunday with a 100% ready johan santana

    • Met2Die08 says:

Actually The better move would have to had Oliver Perez pitch today on 3 days rest, since he didn’t throw as many pitches his last outing. Besides Oliver has proven to be a big game pitcher in the past. This way if we win today regardless of interuption we would still have Santana pitch tomorrow on normal rest.

    • dominicanboy08 says:

to play sunday, we have to win today. there is not choice.

    • mattbez says:

yeah and if they lose today, tomorrow is moot.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I don’t agree. You have to win today, for a shot at tomorrow. If we lose today and the Brewers win, it’s over. What other choice is there?
That being said, I see your point though. It’s all a 50/50 crap shoot from the pitcher to the altered lineup. Jerry is taking a shot.

My biggest fear is we do get in and it’ll be like ‘Sh*t, what do we do now’? Pitching rotation out of order, cut down to 25 man roster and overworked, over matched BP arms of which they’ll have to decide who to take.

  10. Gina says:

Finally Beltran in the 2 hole. I’m glad someone has finally taken their head out of a-s-s. Hopefully it won’t take them this long next season.

    • Dafatone80 says:

We did bat Beltran 2nd for a week. He caught fire so he got moved back to 4/5.

      • Gina says:

I’m pretty sure it was only 2 games. But the problem is he shouldn’t be moved there because he’s struggling or something. He should be moved there because hitting him in front of Delgado and Wright makes the most sense. He gets on base, they can drive him in. Plus he doesn’t make outs often, he can drive guys in himself, sand he’s a pretty good base runner. Batting him 5th was basically a waste.

  11. nastyslider says:

I like this lineup. All we have to do is switch Ramon Martinez with Orlando Hudson next year and this can be a superb lineup!

  12. stemog1 says:

Perez threw 100 pitches on Wednesday night. That’s a lot to come back from – 2 days rest.

  13. nyj0126 says:

I’m happy to see some optomistic people. I hope it stays this way. I hope we stay energized. I won’t be able to watch much of the game today because I go to work at 2 and live like 20 minutes from my job, but I’ll be staying through constant updates of the score like how I’ve been doing since April and May.

I still believe in this team. We have the best pitcher in baseball on the mound. He’s done awesome in the second half. I will make a list that the Mets have to follow in order to win.

    1) Do not give up a run in the 1st inning. Getting behind early kills the physche of this team. In the event in does happen, score some immediately.

    2) Score early. Get guys on. Be patient at the plate. Take your time. Gain momentum.

    3) Johan needs to pitch deep into the game. Possibly 7 or 8 innings. The Mets need to score in the area of 4-6 runs and hope he can only give up 2-3.

    4) The bullpen has to hold up in the event it happens.

I’m very happy that the other two games are later. No scoreboard watching to effect the game. Just play yours and win. Than we’ll worry about tomorrow.

  14. SantanaCYYOung says:

last week or earlier this week there was a poll asking everybody if they would “take” a playoff game with the brewers for the wild card and most people said NO, which was completely ridiculous to me seeing how this team was playing.

i wonder how many people would “take” that playoff game now?

btw, pitching Santana today is a bad idea

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Why is pitching Santana a bad idea? They HAVE to win today. What’s the better choice?

    • nyj0126 says:

What other choice do we got? Throw Jon Niese and end the season? He may not be able to pitch as deep, but each game now is like game seven. And yes, they were greedy. I could have been on the fence on that one. I do believe if the Mets do lose though, they have let us down as fans. And many fans will not be committed to returning next season. Many fans will simply just not like the Mets anymore. Or not take them seriously. I do believe this team will restore order and win these two games. The Cubs can beat the Brewers. Anything is still possible. The scenario of who could pitch Monday if we’re lucky enough to get there could be a true mess – Pedro on four days? Brandon Knight? Everyone? I don’t know. But I’ll be happy if we’re there.

  15. nastyslider says:

I like this lineup. All we have to do is switch Ramon Martinez with Orlando Hudson next year and this can be a amazin’ lineup!

  16. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

i couldnt agree more with the poster above, all i want is for them to just get it, no matter who we play no matter the situation, we can beat anyone on any given day if we play up to our potential and maybe the bullpen could step it up in the post season

  17. nastyslider says:

JOHAN SANTANA HAS BALLS AND COLE HAMELS HAS A VAG THAT’S WHY THE METS HAVE MORE HEART THAN THE PHILLIES. HAMELS WAS SCARED TO PITCH ON REGULAR REST AND SANTANA’S DOING IT ON 3 DAYS REST!!

    • oleosmirf says:

as much as i hate the phillies they have been the most clutch team in baseball the past.

      Santana does have huge cojones!!!!
