Postgame: Mets 2 Marlins 0
By Ted Berg - Sep 27, 2008 4:01 pm

The Mets beat the Marlins, 2-0, at Shea today, keeping their postseason hopes alive. For a box score and recap, go to SNY.tv.

Johan Santana was spectacular.

Santana, throwing on short rest after a 125-pitch outing on Tuesday, started out the game by getting Marlins sparkplug Hanley Ramirez to fly out on the second pitch and proceeded from there. He held the Fish to three hits in a complete-game shutout, striking out nine and walking three.

When, after 104 pitches, Santana returned to the mound for the ninth inning, he received a standing ovation.

The Mets’ bats gave Santana a one-run lead in the first inning when Jose Reyes singled and stole second, Carlos Beltran singled to move Reyes to third, and Carlos Delgado hit a sacrifice fly.

The offense more or less went to sleep thereafter, scoring only one more run in the fourth inning when Daniel Murphy was hit by a pitch and Ramon Martinez doubled him in.

But Santana didn’t even need it.

If we make the play-offs Santana needs to pitch every other day.

But seriously, that was worth about 300 million. Complete game shut out on 3 days rest. If that doesn’t get him some votes for the Cy Young over Lincecum, I don’t know what will.

That was possibly a historic outing, unbelievable

maybe by today’s standards… so what do you think about pitchers in the 60’s-70’s throwing 20-30 complete games in a season, or a guy throwing both ends of a double header ?

Well, I am pretty sure that any of the pitchers from the 60’s-70’s couldn’t go 5 innings today since they would be about 65.

Today’s standards are what we judge players by today.

Must be rough to have to try to find the negative in everything. But I do applaud the effort.

i didnt find anything negative about today’s performance. just pointed out that it’s a bit of an exageration to call this historic. so keep on applauding flamer - your little joke was real funny. shouldnt you be out playing in the corn fields or hunting pheasants in So Dak ….

I think regardless of whether they make it or not he should be considered. He pitches good when it matters the most

For the first time in a long time, I was proud to be a Met fan today.

Tomorrow may still be the end of the season for the Mets, but Johan Santana showed something today that will lock him in Met fans’ hearts forever.

Johan Santana…if he can’t save this team, no one can. Truly a remarkable performance for the ages.

(but who else lost their breath when Ross hit that last pitch?)

Well, with Endy out there in left, I was actually thinking it was going to take another miracle catch, which of course I knew he could make…

THAT WAS AWESOME! SANTANA is King Clutch. Anyone who questioned the Johan trade has lost any right to question anything about this team.

If the Cubs can hang on we will win this thing.

LETS GO METS!!!
