Postgame: Mets 2 Marlins 0

September 27, 2008 at 16:01 pm · 423 comments

by Ted Berg

The Mets beat the Marlins, 2-0, at Shea today, keeping their postseason hopes alive. For a box score and recap, go to SNY.tv.

Johan Santana was spectacular.

Santana, throwing on short rest after a 125-pitch outing on Tuesday, started out the game by getting Marlins sparkplug Hanley Ramirez to fly out on the second pitch and proceeded from there. He held the Fish to three hits in a complete-game shutout, striking out nine and walking three.

When, after 104 pitches, Santana returned to the mound for the ninth inning, he received a standing ovation.

The Mets’ bats gave Santana a one-run lead in the first inning when Jose Reyes singled and stole second, Carlos Beltran singled to move Reyes to third, and Carlos Delgado hit a sacrifice fly.

The offense more or less went to sleep thereafter, scoring only one more run in the fourth inning when Daniel Murphy was hit by a pitch and Ramon Martinez doubled him in.

But Santana didn’t even need it.

If we make the play-offs Santana needs to pitch every other day.

But seriously, that was worth about 300 million. Complete game shut out on 3 days rest. If that doesn’t get him some votes for the Cy Young over Lincecum, I don’t know what will.

Regis Courtemanche September 27, 2008 at 4:04 pm

That was possibly a historic outing, unbelievable

wheres.the.magic.number September 27, 2008 at 7:14 pm

maybe by today’s standards… so what do you think about pitchers in the 60’s-70’s throwing 20-30 complete games in a season, or a guy throwing both ends of a double header ?

SoDakMets September 27, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Well, I am pretty sure that any of the pitchers from the 60’s-70’s couldn’t go 5 innings today since they would be about 65.

Today’s standards are what we judge players by today.

Must be rough to have to try to find the negative in everything. But I do applaud the effort.

wheres.the.magic.number September 27, 2008 at 8:55 pm

i didnt find anything negative about today’s performance. just pointed out that it’s a bit of an exageration to call this historic. so keep on applauding flamer – your little joke was real funny. shouldnt you be out playing in the corn fields or hunting pheasants in So Dak ….

Stylus September 27, 2008 at 9:53 pm

I agree Regis!

danlx13 September 27, 2008 at 4:16 pm

if the mets end up making the playoffs i think hes got a really good chance of winning cy young

nastyslider September 27, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I think regardless of whether they make it or not he should be considered. He pitches good when it matters the most

snowmanrt September 27, 2008 at 4:03 pm

LETS GO METS!!!! One more to go! Go CUBS!!!!! beat the brewers!!

mdemaio September 27, 2008 at 4:04 pm

That’s guts, man…if they don’t wake up after that, there’s no saving this team. Go Cubs!

WestCoastMets_since86 September 27, 2008 at 4:06 pm

THAT WAS AWESOME!

GregB September 27, 2008 at 4:06 pm

For the first time in a long time, I was proud to be a Met fan today.

Tomorrow may still be the end of the season for the Mets, but Johan Santana showed something today that will lock him in Met fans’ hearts forever.

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Hey I didn’t know Obama’s wife was a Mets fan?

Conroy September 27, 2008 at 4:13 pm

haha
very nice

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:15 pm

I wondered if I was the only one that would catch that. Thanks.

gipper82475 September 27, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Well done.

mr.gee21 September 27, 2008 at 4:47 pm

iluvbuckner September 27, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Johan Santana…if he can’t save this team, no one can. Truly a remarkable performance for the ages.

(but who else lost their breath when Ross hit that last pitch?)

wethreekings September 27, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Guilty

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Talking to the EMS right now trying to convince them it was not a false report.

mr.gee21 September 27, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Well, with Endy out there in left, I was actually thinking it was going to take another miracle catch, which of course I knew he could make…

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Looked like Piazza’s shot off Mo in 2000

FlightFromHouston September 27, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Santana is a good pitcher

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 4:07 pm

LETS GO CUBBIES

BLUEXORANGE September 27, 2008 at 4:07 pm

i don’t give a crap what met fans say. deep down you know U STILL BELIEVE…lets remake the past…..good performance last year by maine….great performance this year by Santana……last year bad ending…THIS YEAR….WHAT DO U GUYS SAY!!!! LETS GO METS……F-ING BELIEVE

WestCoastMets_since86 September 27, 2008 at 4:07 pm

THAT WAS AWESOME! SANTANA is King Clutch. Anyone who questioned the Johan trade has lost any right to question anything about this team.

If the Cubs can hang on we will win this thing.

LETS GO METS!!!

FlightFromHouston September 27, 2008 at 4:08 pm

who’s pitching 2mrow? Perez?

Tidewater September 27, 2008 at 5:08 pm

yes.

Stylus September 27, 2008 at 4:08 pm

yeah Mets!!!!!!! brilliant, Santana!

CaveManJoe September 27, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Thank you Omar for getting us Santana

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Exactly.

shea73 September 27, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Been a Mets fan since 1973. This may have been the single greatest pitching performance I have ever seen. Santana is worth every penny!

Wright88 September 27, 2008 at 4:11 pm

All Johan haters should be eating so much crow right now..

danlx13 September 27, 2008 at 4:17 pm

who hates johan?????

mr.gee21 September 27, 2008 at 4:50 pm

The Yankees?

Tidewater September 27, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Yes, there was a little grumbling earlier in the season perhaps (and it was unwarranted) but have you really seen Santana “haters?”

khmustache September 27, 2008 at 4:11 pm

unbelievable….seaver, gooden….and now santana…..amazing performance today

LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Very David Cone like performance in deed. Best LHP for us since Viola in his prime?

khmustache September 27, 2008 at 4:21 pm

no question about it….

Tidewater September 27, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Pete Shourek

BBmetsfreak36 September 27, 2008 at 4:12 pm

hmm im starting to kinda like this santana guy

EdysFanatic September 27, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Wonder how Johan hater Russo will spin this one?

YO!!!!!!! HAN!!!!!!

Who’s pitching tomrorow? Any announcement yet?

SantanaCYYOung September 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

oliver

CitizenSnips September 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

What has he been saying about Santana?

DjDeF September 27, 2008 at 5:02 pm

that he is not gutsy…he takes himself out of games…all bs…he cannot deny it anymore. BTW Russo is an idiot…so is Francesa for that matter

nymets212 September 27, 2008 at 4:12 pm

anyone else crap their pants when that last out was hit

blains2008 September 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

yup, couldn’t breathe until it landed in the glove.

SantanaCYYOung September 27, 2008 at 4:13 pm

I said Santana should NOT pitch on 3 days rest…I was wrong.

He’s the MVP of the NL and he’s the CyYoung award winner, I don’t care what anybody else says

Tidewater September 27, 2008 at 5:10 pm

MVP? Breathe….breathe… breathe… Okay. Feeling better now?

Parvis September 27, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Hey Tidewater…

I agree w/You 100%, this was the most important game for the mets thus far…As it was last santana start and the ones before….This guy is the TRUE definition of what an MVP is!!!! the BP blew 8 Santana leads, this guy has not lost in months….If hes not the MVP who is? The guy has pitched in so many “must wins” and “have to haves”…And hes not just winning hes completely Dominating these games..With little offense behind him..

SanTana is the METSY M-V-P!!!! and would have my vote for NL MVP..

Parvis September 27, 2008 at 5:49 pm

I ment “SantanaCYYOung”

Parvis September 27, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Santana 34 starts (Tied Career High)

16- 7 (8 blown leads)

Lowest ERA in Santana’s Career, 2.53

234 INN Pitched (Most in Career) 3 CG (tied for most)2SH OUTS tied career high…

66 ER Lowest in Career (Not including his early 3 years with only 8-10 starts)…..

CaveManJoe September 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

and looks like the cubs have sat just about everyone

Kellman September 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

OH MY GOD

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Man, Ted Lilly almost jacked one there. Groundrule double.

CaveManJoe September 27, 2008 at 4:15 pm

crap – almost 3-0

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:16 pm

If we sign Sheets he had better come with lots Geico.

khmustache September 27, 2008 at 4:23 pm

sheets is the biggest gamble of all the free agents…death, taxes and a ben sheets injury

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Agreed. Only way I touch him is for the 5th starter spot on a Kyle Loshe contract with Niese in the background.

khmustache September 27, 2008 at 4:28 pm

yup…buy you know somebody is going to throw the bank at him…he’s going to command an ace’s salary when in reality his durability makes him a 3rd or 4th option

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:29 pm

You are most likely right. I just think with this market being top heavy someone will be left out to dry.

wethreekings September 27, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Burnett would be much safer, as crazy as that could have sounded a year or two ago.

wheres.the.magic.number September 27, 2008 at 7:18 pm

he’s had his share of injuries right ? hasnt it taken him about 8 yrs to win more than 14 games in a season ? he may have great stuff, but if he’s only had 1 great year in 8 seasons, its a bit risky to suddenly pay him ace money. just my opinion

SantanaCYYOung September 27, 2008 at 4:16 pm

its shaping up to be like last year for the last sunday of the season, hopefully there is a different script than last year’s

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Not too many times that you get to have the same thing happen twice and get a chance to change your fortune.

X-Man September 27, 2008 at 4:17 pm

No Glavin = Different script.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:17 pm

lets go Fukudome!!!

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:18 pm

ah Fuk U Dome

mdemaio September 27, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I don’t think Lilly got the “This game is meaningless” memo…

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:18 pm

He’s still pitching for a rotation spot. He already has it nailed down but nobody should tell him that.

mookie September 27, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Santana has to win the cy young. I know I’m biased but webb couldn’t do it under the preasure, and lincecum never had to pitch any preasure games.

CitizenSnips September 27, 2008 at 4:19 pm

There’s no way to justify a Cy Young winner with a 3.24 ERA, no matter ho many wins he has.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:20 pm

santana will probably finish 3rd or 4th but Lincecum has been virtually unhittable whereas Santana has just been unbeatable.

lincecum like santana on a team like the red sox is a 22 game winner

wethreekings September 27, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Who could possibly finish ahead of Santana besides Webb and Lincecum?

BLUEXORANGE September 27, 2008 at 4:17 pm

stupid fukodome…

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:18 pm

I can’t believe that there were people on here that wanted us to meet that price for him. He’s not that good.

wethreekings September 27, 2008 at 4:42 pm

It’s always a risk. The only Japanese player I say go for unquestionably with all the money we’ve got is Yu Darvish, and he’s probably not going to be a free agent this year.

bvaz September 27, 2008 at 4:19 pm

I hate this helpless feeling just waiting for milwaukee to lose.
great game by santana. let’s hope boras calls Ollie tonight and tells him how many millions tomorrow’s game is worth.

mookie September 27, 2008 at 4:20 pm

what do you guys think of this. Because Sheets injured himself, he would have a low market price. I say if we sign ollie we can afford to take a chance on sheets. It won’t cost as much as in the begining of the season.

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:22 pm

I am sure he will still get someone to bite. It’s the years too. If he would sign a 1 year incentive based contract then sure but I don’t see it.
I am not even sure about Ollie. I would offer him arbitration and check back in on him. Burnette would be a great guy for this rotation. If I could get him and Lowe I would be estatic.

khmustache September 27, 2008 at 4:25 pm

the outcome of tomorrow’s game will determine how the mets approach the ollie talks

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:25 pm

perez is way too inconsistant to resign next year. Sheets i wouldnt sign for any more than 1 year and sabathia’s weight is a problem

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Burnette and Lowe baby.

CC
Burnette
Lowe
Ollie
Dempster
Garland
Sheets
I am sure I missed some big ones but that’s how I rate those.

wethreekings September 27, 2008 at 4:46 pm

If Sheets didn’t get injured so much, I’d put him up there just a bit below CC. Not sure if Lowe should be that high, he’s only a year younger than Pedro.
CC
Burnett
Dempster
Ollie
Sheets
Lowe
Garland
Lohse
Pedro
If Yu Darvish comes to America, I’d put him above Burnett

Tidewater September 27, 2008 at 5:13 pm

He’s gonna make a ton, no matter. If you think Sheets wouls come cheap, you are nuts.

Tidewater September 27, 2008 at 5:14 pm

That’s “would.”

johnfromflushing September 27, 2008 at 4:21 pm

if only a few others had the guts and desire santana does…..

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 4:21 pm

And we live to play another day…

OMG please, please have the good Ollie show up. Someone should start coaching him tonight.

Santana is a GOD.

SantanaCYYOung September 27, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Oliver is pitching for millions upon millions of dollars tomorrow (literally), he needs (MUST) have a big game.

but 3 runs in 2 games? the bats have to show up…u can only “tip” your hat to the pitcher so many times.

It has to be 7-0 in the first (i’m exagerrating…maybe not)

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Please let us be on the other side of that 7-0 after the first this time.

SantanaCYYOung September 27, 2008 at 4:29 pm

i think the most important inning of the game is the 1st

i think if oliver gets a quick 1-2-3 inning and the mets score some early runs it would start to look good, if not…

Lets Go Cubs

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Agreed. Should know early where that game is going.

KinersKornerman September 27, 2008 at 4:47 pm

I dunno. I’ve seen enough Ollie meltdowns in the 4th, 5th and 6th to be on the edge fo my couch all afternoon. Just hoping Ollie doesn’t get the Glavine treatment at the end fo the day.

LL September 27, 2008 at 4:22 pm

An absolue Ace. Truly an Ace!!!

imtiredofguiseppefranco September 27, 2008 at 4:23 pm

ladies and gentlemen, your MLB ERA LEADER AS OF NOW

JOHAN SANTANA!!!!!

dominicanboy08 September 27, 2008 at 4:23 pm

SantanaCYYOung September 27, 2008 at 4:27 pm

don’t think pelf will be in there

therealsince86 September 27, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I would as sume he will be saved for the potential playoff game Monday.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:28 pm

only guys i trust out of the pen tommorow are santana, pelfrey, figueroa and smith. then if u need to get a lefty out i guess schoeneweis has to get the not

KinersKornerman September 27, 2008 at 4:38 pm

and santana, if necessary

wethreekings September 27, 2008 at 4:47 pm

I could see Ayala, but not if it’s close.

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Ted Lilly has been inspired by Johan.

Constnza81V2.0 September 27, 2008 at 4:27 pm

“Johan Santana was spectacular.”

Honestly, just cut the recap off after that. There is NOTHING else to say.

Go Cubs. You gotta believe.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:29 pm

lets go cubbies!!!!!

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 4:30 pm

What were the chances that 2 years in a row that game 162 determines a season for the same team?

Tidewater September 27, 2008 at 5:15 pm

It might not. It might be game 163.

LL September 27, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Unbelievable performance by Santana! One of the best Mets pitching performances ever. On 3 days rest with a previous career high in pitch count, and the playoff implications, and the history of previous season’s ending. Unreal!!!

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:32 pm

i think they’ll wait for tomorrow to determine that..lets ge there first

mdemaio September 27, 2008 at 4:36 pm

They’re not on sale yet, to my knowledge…I think Stub Hub’s your best bet…

CaseStreet September 27, 2008 at 4:54 pm

I don’t think they’re at Shea.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:36 pm

brewers game is on fox in NY area b/c of yanks rain delay

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Would anyone rather see Brandon “Olympian” Knight tomorrow instead of Ollie? I guess I’d go with Ollie, but days rest against a righty laden lineup is scary. At least it’ll take Jacobs and Roids Gonzalez out of the lineup.

Not that we need motivation to win, but it would be nice to take out Olsen, with his smack talk and under .500 record.

Will the Mets play Castro again tomorrow against a lefty? Maybe Cancel??

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:39 pm

schneider will go b.c they need his defensive skills for ollie

Aquadealer September 27, 2008 at 4:40 pm

mdemaio September 27, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Thanks Ted. Exciting stuff.

kickingmule September 27, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Has anyone mentioned we now need a recount on the 25 greatest moments at Shea. Santana’s performance today must rate somewhere between 15 and 25 .

CaveManJoe September 27, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Tits Mcghee flies out 4-0 cubs 2 on 2 out

mdemaio September 27, 2008 at 4:49 pm

We were calling him that at the game all night on Thursday…funny

Darth Manuel September 27, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Holy jeebus, Lilly is smoking the ball.

CaveManJoe September 27, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Lilly just missed a grand slam by inches

ShammGod126 September 27, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Santana is a fkin beast… worth every penny. I say just pitch him again Sunday

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 4:50 pm

No, Fox keep on Chicago and Brewers. You never do anything right. You’ve ruined watching sports too many times.

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 4:53 pm

Yeah, what is going on? I’m watching the Cubs/Brewers, next thing you know, Phillies/Nats are on.
Sigh….

KinersKornerman September 27, 2008 at 4:50 pm

It would be really be nice if the offense showed up on Sunday. 3 runs in 2 days. That’s not gonna cut it tomorrow. Let’s Go Mets Hitters!!!!

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 4:51 pm

Normally I’d say the Brewers are finished because of their horrendous pen, but it’s actually been quite good recently…

IF* there were to be a game Monday, I guess it would be Parra v.s. Pedro? Yuck.

acast22 September 27, 2008 at 4:52 pm

why would they put the sillies on?

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 4:53 pm

to torment Met fans.

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Ollie scares me a lot

Darth Manuel September 27, 2008 at 4:52 pm

I seriously cannot wait until tomorrow.. Lets rent out Yankee stadium and have a giant party tonight.. HHEHEHE..

Darth Manuel September 27, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Fox I fukin hate you………..!!!!!!!!!!

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Who hates the Silly fans with their rally towels?

KinersKornerman September 27, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Let them be. In Philly, they use those towels instead of taking baths.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:55 pm

lets go nats, division is theoretically possible

smm140 September 27, 2008 at 4:55 pm

unbelievable. i’ve never seen a better individual performance in a baseball game (considering the situation). i said it in another thread, but they should just go ahead and erect a statue of johan in front of citifield now. he’s just the definition of a winner. i wish he could instill his mindset into jose, dwright, and beltran. and i certainly hope these guys convert that effort into a win tomorrow, it would be a slap in the face to him to lose tomorrow. he’s answered the bell every time they needed him, and someone else has to show up tomorrow. i’m looking right at you, op, wright, reyes, beltran.

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 4:56 pm

No, no, I’d rather watch the Brewers/Cubs. What are they doing?
And now I gotta put us with McCarver also, to boot.

Utley single to start the bottom of the 4th.

acast22 September 27, 2008 at 4:56 pm

exactly dont give up how funny would it be if the sillies didnt get in

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 4:57 pm

2 on no outs, thanks John Lannan, pride of Long Island

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 4:58 pm

its only 1-0

nastyslider September 27, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Perez is basically pitching for his money tomorrow. If he doesn’t win he’s not coming back!

nastyslider September 27, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Stupid Cubs!

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Well thanks to the nationals there is basically no shot at the division but who cares because we will win the wild card

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I might have to turn off this Fox game and follow the score on the web site. I do not think I can take these Phillies fans even for half a game -lol.

Reading a book on pitching great Bob Feller. He says that the NY and Washington fans were great – they were the fairest and really knew their baseball.

He goes on to say the Philly fans were the absolute worst. Says,
they all had leather lungs and were the most obnoxious fans anywhere, with many bordering on abusive.

Some things never change…

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Yeah we’re gonna get help from the Gnats. We had a million and a half chances to win this division all season long…..

Lannon has lost it, walked Moyer on 4 pitches to load the bases.

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 5:08 pm

But got Howard out to end the inning.

And my FOX just switched back to the Brewers game.

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 5:08 pm

It was Rollins

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Sorry, my bad.

Flushing_is_Burning September 27, 2008 at 5:06 pm

damn you good for nothing Nationals!! well at least still hang on to wildcard hopes.

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Back to Beerland on Fox

CaseStreet September 27, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Awesome game. I’m so pumped to be going to a meaningful game tomorrow. Let’s go Mets!

Nails September 27, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Do you think Boras is calling Ollie and telling him that tomorrow (and the following weeks) could mean the difference between 5 million and 100 million?

If Ollie doesn’t believe him, he should go talk to Beltran.

I think for that reason, Big game Ollie will show up. If we score 3, we win.

Nails September 27, 2008 at 5:09 pm

* I meant 50 million, but the point is the same.

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 5:11 pm

If Ollie does good tomorrow and helps the Mets win I guarantee he is a Met next year. This is a huge start for Ollie not only as a Met but for his contract next year.

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 5:13 pm

If 50 mill is your back up plan, I think life is pretty good, and stakes are low-er for Perez.

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 5:09 pm

For the first time time this week I can actually enjoy tonight and tomorrow until 1:10.

danlx13 September 27, 2008 at 5:10 pm

haha i feel the same way

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Lilly is crusin’

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Wow, Lilly is outdueling Santana right now.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 5:11 pm

2-0 phillies is still a game so is 4-0 cubs

Retire 31 September 27, 2008 at 5:14 pm

WHAT IS THE CUBBIES/BREWERS SCORE??

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 5:16 pm

sandiegometsman September 27, 2008 at 5:15 pm

4-0 Cubs, Lillie pitching no hitter thru 4

CaveManJoe September 27, 2008 at 5:16 pm

cubs up 4-0 top 5, nats down 2-1 top 5

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 5:16 pm

2-1 Phillies.

IAmKeithHernandez September 27, 2008 at 5:16 pm

Just got back from the game. Best game I’ve ever been to! The crowd was going nuts the entire time with at least 10 separate “Johan” chants starting up through it all. The 9th inning was insane, everyone was up cheering Santana on and it got louder with each swing and miss. Talk about money well spent on this guy…what a clutch performance.

BBmetsfreak36 September 27, 2008 at 5:19 pm

hate to be a downer but whats sad…is that just a couple games we probably coulda had if billy wagner hadent have gotten hurt…we wouldnt even be in this discussion/perdicimeant. I dont regret ayla but if we had alya and wagner at the end of the game…we’d atleast have somewhat of a better chance w/ that couple games the bullpen well…u know the story

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 5:26 pm

Yea, but you could say that for anything. If only Church didn’t slide out of his way in Atlanta. If only Wagner hadn’t blow saves here and there. If only Wright hadn’t swung at ball 4 the other night, if only Omar had held on to Chad Bradford 2 years ago….

We have to live with the mistakes/unluckness/breaks they’ve been dealt, or dealt themselves. It $ucks, but thats life…

BBmetsfreak36 September 27, 2008 at 5:42 pm

dont get me wrong…i was just pondering..

i do believe haha

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Does anyone else feel like we are gonna get stabbed in the back for the 2nd year in a row tomorrow??

sandiegometsman September 27, 2008 at 5:26 pm

Ya Gotta Believe

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Honestly? Yah

acast22 September 27, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Not sure how I feel about Stark leaving off David Wright and/or Jose Reyes from MVP consideration, and giving someone other than Johan Cy Young. But hey, whatever. As long as we make the playoffs.

wethreekings September 27, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Ugh. Jayson Werth? REALLY? What happened to Cy Lannan?

MeesesGlokmah September 27, 2008 at 5:25 pm

2 low scoring games = 1 high scoring game, right? At least that’s the way it seems to have worked with the Mets this year. I expect big offensive numbers from the Mets tomorrow. I know they’ll come through.

1985Mets September 27, 2008 at 5:30 pm

OK we got one. NOW WHAT???? WE still have 2morrow to look for. Lets not get carried away guys.

Lets go METS..

Santana57 September 27, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Anybody have any info on tickets for a possible only game playoff with the Brewers on Monday?

1985Mets September 27, 2008 at 5:33 pm

I think if your a season holder it should be in your ticket booklet. I have them on mine..

Darth Manuel September 27, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Somethings very strange with Miller Park.. Another NONO…

Noway.. but if it did happen.. they must be using some form of Technology that helps the ball move or something..

rigsay September 27, 2008 at 5:33 pm

fuk-u-dome

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Ollie must pitch a good 1st and than olsen will begin sweating buckets

1985Mets September 27, 2008 at 5:35 pm

I dont know man.. Ollie is been very very very shake in his last 3 outings.

I really dont trust him.. ANYONE here thinks different?

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 5:40 pm

I am confident the mets will hit olsen. Ollie has to start well to keep the positive vibes going. Lots of glavine video tomorrow on TV.

1985Mets September 27, 2008 at 5:44 pm

I dont know man, I will be at the game 2morrow, but theres a part of me feels that ollie will also be hit

which means that the bullpen will have to SAVE us. WHICH IS CRAZY to even think that…

I hope your right about inconsistent ollie

acast22 September 27, 2008 at 5:33 pm

its the cubs that must be using something or in that case lilly he almsot had on elast time zambrano had one and no brewer has thrown one at miller weird?

backinbusiness September 27, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Just got back from the game. Santana = God. The fans were amazing. I was on my feet nearly the whole game.

I brought the following items to Shea:
1) Pedro bobblehead purchased before Thursday’s win.
2) Picture of me and my grandfather in the upper deck, June 1987
3) Back page of the Daily News, July 25, 2008 “FIRST AT LAST!” with David going absolutely nuts.

All items will return to Shea with my for the PLAYOFFS!

LETS GO METS
LETS GO CUBS
LETS GO NATS (I STILL BELIEVE!)

BBmetsfreak36 September 27, 2008 at 5:43 pm

reyesnwright September 27, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Any chance Marmol pitches the 8th?

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Probably not. I’d guess Samardzija who hasn’t pitched in a few days.

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Also, Marmol bats 5th this inning and I’d prefer they get that far….

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:12 pm

wow. marmol back in… awesome!

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:13 pm

my bad — marquis and marmol look exactly alike

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:06 pm

reyesnwright September 27, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Nationals 2nd and 3rd none out in the 8th…

danlx13 September 27, 2008 at 6:06 pm

what do u guys think the lineup should be tomorrow against the lefty

reyesnwright September 27, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Reyes
Beltran
Wright
Delgado
Castro?
Murphy
Martinez
Church
Perez

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Reyes
Beltran
Delgado
Wright
Murphy
Martinez
Church
Cancel
Ollie

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:08 pm

good question. I’d go with the same exact lineup tho. Castro is already in there and Church has a big hit still left in him.

backinbusiness September 27, 2008 at 6:07 pm

COME ON LMILLZ!!!!!

backinbusiness September 27, 2008 at 6:09 pm

reyesnwright September 27, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Isn’t Marquis supposed to start tomorrow?

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 6:16 pm

reyesnwright September 27, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Ah..Last time I checked it was Marquis but that was a few days ago..

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Pedro pitching Monday game, if needed.
Interesting….

Flushing_is_Burning September 27, 2008 at 6:19 pm

any chance Lidge blowing this??

reyesnwright September 27, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Any chance of the Cubs not blowing this?

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Crap. 2 on, 1 out for Brewers, bottom of the 8th.

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Would love to see it but have to say no. Have to give credit where credit is due.
But if he does, oh man, how great would that be???

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 6:21 pm

not good here with the cubs

latorrem1 September 27, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Marquis can’t throw a strike all of a sudden…I swear if they blow this game!

Jay September 27, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Oh geez…. Marquis is pulling a Heilman

danlx13 September 27, 2008 at 6:22 pm

why did they take marmol out

WrightsRight September 27, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Looks like Jason Marquis intends to kill the Mets, whether it’s at Shea or in Milwaukee.

reyesnwright September 27, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Why does every game I watch seem like a Mets Game, no matter who is playing…Score early, don’t score late, let the bullpen give it up.

Jay September 27, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Double play right here!!!!

cousinrk September 27, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Seriously, I thought I was done with stress for at least the rest of the day. This is torturous. Hanging our hats on Jason Marquis right now

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:25 pm

OMG, he hits him for bases loaded and Fielder coming up.
WTF? Can they please get these 2 outs?
Looks like Lou making a pitching change.

cousinrk September 27, 2008 at 6:26 pm

If they do get out of this, does Lou bring in Wood for the ninth?

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Good question. You never know what Lou will do.
Cotts on the mound now. And fly ball to center, he drops the ball. 4-3.
You have got to be kidding me…..

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 6:26 pm

o no dont do it to us cubs

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 6:26 pm

WOW MARQUIS. YOU REALLY STINK. YOU WOULD BE PERFECT IN THE METS BULLPEN

Philnym31 September 27, 2008 at 6:27 pm

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 6:28 pm

cousinrk September 27, 2008 at 6:28 pm

are you kidding me??

WrightsRight September 27, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Okay – teams are no officially trying to lose so the Mets don’t get in.

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Yeah, cause no one wants to face this bullpen

Flushing_is_Burning September 27, 2008 at 6:28 pm

jeez not looking good

gipper82475 September 27, 2008 at 6:28 pm

GOD IS NOT A METS FAN

Jay September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

I was thinking the exact same thing…

gipper82475 September 27, 2008 at 6:33 pm

There’s actually a song by that title, recorded after the 2000 series.

WrightsRight September 27, 2008 at 6:30 pm

dude, i realized that a long time ago. God sh*ts on the mets.

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

WestCoastMets_since86 September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

i am sick

DavidDog September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

i hate them. kill the cubs. theyree doing it on purpose. may they all die in pain. and never win for another 200 years

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Another pitching change for the Cubs, for those who can’t watch.

Darth Manuel September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

wE have the worst KARMA ever… EVER EVER EVER… I fukin can’t believe the Cubs are blowing this game…

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Gee, I wonder what could be causing such bad karma…

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

this is what happens when u dont win the big games, you rely on other teams to win

nastyslider September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

THE CUBS ARE LOSING THIS ON PURPOSE!!!!!!!

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 6:29 pm

And they’ll probably switch to the Phillies game to show us them clinching.

backinbusiness September 27, 2008 at 6:30 pm

now would be a delicious time for brad lidge’s first blown save.

WrightsRight September 27, 2008 at 6:31 pm

only if Lidge was on the Mets would that happen.

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:30 pm

And THIS is why we needed all those blown games by our BP…..

latorrem1 September 27, 2008 at 6:30 pm

especially other teams who clinched a playoff spot 2 weeks ago

Darth Manuel September 27, 2008 at 6:31 pm

did you see Lou smiling in the Dugout.. this is trash.. pure trash

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:32 pm

He was upset with Marquis, which is why he pulled him so he can get a guy in who can end the inning.

nastyslider September 27, 2008 at 6:31 pm

BREWERS ARE GONNA WIN!!!!!!! THE CUBS SCREW OUR SEASON. I’M A DODGERS FAN NOW!

metsfan42793 September 27, 2008 at 6:32 pm

ONE MORE OUT CUBS

Jay September 27, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Ok cmon one more!!!!

egnirc September 27, 2008 at 6:32 pm

I love how Acta and the Nats talk about not bending over for the Mets but they do it time and time again for the Phillies.

Everyone loves to hate the Mets but apparently the Phillies can do basically the same and people lay down for them.

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Who is laying down for the Phils?

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 6:32 pm

2 outs. I really thought they were gonna blow that out at the plate, way our luck is going.

WrightsRight September 27, 2008 at 6:32 pm

I guess we can look forward to that inbred troll coming on here if the Phillies clinch. Oh joy.

You knew he’d ground into the dp, Lidge has been awesome but he squeaks out of so many situations especially lately. Damn, I would have loved to have put the pressure on the Phils tomorrow.

WrightsRight September 27, 2008 at 6:42 pm

forget it…..sillies won. zalasko just showed the last out. vomited on my keyboard.

Just think:

Hold a 7-0 lead and 5-3 lead…..and many other leads and this isn’t happening. Phils are great, no doubt. But Mets have delivered the division to them giftwrapped with a red ribbon each season.

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:43 pm

GO TORRE!

domosnacks5 September 27, 2008 at 6:45 pm

I was at that 7-0 game. It went from sooooo happy and awesome to soooooooooo bad.

domosnacks5 September 27, 2008 at 6:48 pm

I was also there today, which was siiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.

Let’s Go Mets. Get this done tomorrow.

gipper82475 September 27, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Phucking Phillies.

Ew. Will the 2000s be the Phillies’ like the 90s were the Braves? Omar better be very busy this offseason.

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Oh well — now we play Cubs or go home. I would think Cubs want a play-in, so they may scoreboard watch tomorrow and lay down if Mets are way ahead…

DavidDog September 27, 2008 at 6:42 pm

ok its done in phila, never count on anything good from the gnats. truly an insect of a team

el_giacomo September 27, 2008 at 6:43 pm

freakin’ GIDP….ahh well….Nats stink…

Go Cubbies!

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:44 pm

At least I can root for Torre and Manny now.

latorrem1 September 27, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Well, the Mets had their chance to win the division…now we need to hope the Cubs hold on here

cousinrk September 27, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Its amazing the diff between the mets and phils. there closer didn’t blow a game all year our closer blew 7 and then went down in august. Ugh! so painful. I hate watching the phillies celebrate the second division title we placed at their door

backinbusiness September 27, 2008 at 6:45 pm

I really thought Zimm would get it done there. Ugh.

Tomorrow, then.

WrightsRight September 27, 2008 at 6:45 pm

I wonder how our bullpen looks at themselves in the mirror? Are they disgusted? If I came to work each day and performed as badly as they do, I would’ve been fired 20x over. Phils don’t win the division if not for our bullpen.

My worry is if Mets make the postseason, Omar will be satisfied and unwilling to give his pen an enema. I hope Heilman shed a tear as he watched the Phillies celebrate and felt enormous pangs of guilt.

metsforever September 27, 2008 at 6:45 pm

I agree with Rosenthal. The Phillies would be nowhere without Lidge. The replacement for Lidge would be way worse than a replacement for Howard.

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:48 pm

I think Howard and Lidge get votes, Delgado and Wright and even Johan gets some, and Pujols wins it.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 6:46 pm

now hopefully Perez doesnt choke and the offense comes alive

jammer September 27, 2008 at 6:50 pm

are ramirez, soriano and lee going to sit out two days in a row tomorrow?

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Ned Yost v 2.0 went to the Jerry Manuel school of bullpen mgmt.

metsforever September 27, 2008 at 6:47 pm

OK Cubs, score a few more and put this thing on ice. Don’t leave it to chance

cousinrk September 27, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Absolutely we can talk about all the starting pitchers and the clutch hitting we want but if Brad Lidge was the Brad Lidge that lost his closing job in Houston, we’d have won the division a week ago. He’s got to get huge MVP and CY Young consideration.

metsforever September 27, 2008 at 6:51 pm

That is why I worry about giving KRod 5/75, or whatever huge number he will be looking for. Closers are a fickle bunch.

WrightsRight September 27, 2008 at 6:48 pm

I do think the Mets are cursed when it comes to closers. Have we ever really had a lights out guy?

If we signd KRod he’ll probably blow a ton of games. Mets need to get a priest to perform an excorcism on the bullpen before they knock down Shea, and a pre-emptive excorcism on the new bullpen at Citi Field.

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:52 pm

There aren’t many lights out closers year in and year out outside of the Bronx.

ridethesnake September 27, 2008 at 6:53 pm

I’d say we are cursed in bringing in talented 2bmen, from Randolph to Samuel to Baerga to Alomar to Matsui.

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Fox, please stop with the robotic sounds. It was old in the mid-90’s when you did it with the NHL and doesn’t sound any better now.

fishmanj September 27, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Is Mark Grace the worst color man in history. My 8 year old’s could do better commentary.

metsfan1 September 27, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Santana was spectacular. 6-3 Cubs top of the 9th. If they can hold on, tomorrow will be crazy. I just hope Perez doesn’t walk every other batter. The scary thought is if both Milwaukee and the Mets either win or lose, the Mets start Pedro on Monday. He usually needs 4 days rest or more. he would be going on 3.

metsforever September 27, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Pedro should start throwing now, so the 1st inning seems like the 5th.

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Nice, Cubs plate another one.

cousinrk September 27, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Pile on Cubbies. There we go. He better still bring in Wood now no matter what

Flushing_is_Burning September 27, 2008 at 6:51 pm

7-3 cubs sweet!!!

jammer September 27, 2008 at 6:51 pm

i really hope the cubs put a more respectable lineup tomorrow

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 6:56 pm

they will. all those righties will hammer CC. They have to stay sharp for the po

cousinrk September 27, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Pedro would be on such a short leash on monday, the mets would set a record for pitchers in a game in that one.

backinbusiness September 27, 2008 at 6:53 pm

maybe we’ll see some maine.

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Good thing the heart of the Brewers order was already up. Just make it easy on us Wood. I really hope the Cubs put out their A lineup tomorrow to get them a nice warmup game before their series. Plus, I don’t think Lou likes his players to lay down and die no matter what.

metsforever September 27, 2008 at 6:54 pm

It’s Wood. At least Lou is trying.

They won’t use Wood or Marmol tomorrow, so this is it.

cousinrk September 27, 2008 at 6:55 pm

I wonder if Lou will use some more of the regulars tomorrow so they don’t have 4 days off in a row. If they all sit tomorrow they’d be off Sat, Sun, Mon and Tues. I gotta think he’ll put in some of his big players

dcmetsfan September 27, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I don’t think he’ll sit everyone. In fact, they’ll probably go with their regular starting lineup, though not for the entire game.

Then again, considering how well their “scrubs” have performed, maybe we should hope they rest their starters.

dcmetsfan September 27, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Big ups for Fox for NOT showing the end of the Cubs game here in DC after the gnats game ended. Man, I really hate that network.

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Wood K’s Weeks, 1 down.

Flushing_is_Burning September 27, 2008 at 6:56 pm

1 out

metsforever September 27, 2008 at 6:57 pm

He’ll start the regulars for sure. It was day after night today, so it’s understandable. You earn the right to rest hen you win early. He won’t want them to sit for that long. Look what happenned to Colorado last year between the NLCS and WS. They waited a week and were crushed.

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Kendall grounds out to 2nd. 2 away.

metsforever September 27, 2008 at 6:57 pm

2 down

Flushing_is_Burning September 27, 2008 at 6:58 pm

need 1 more out!!!

Johan The Ace September 27, 2008 at 6:58 pm

DESTINY IS IN OUR HANDS

WestCoastMets_since86 September 27, 2008 at 6:58 pm

CC Sabathia can’t just keep running out there on 3 days rest and throw up complete games – somthings gotta give and hopefully a rested cubs regular lineup will knock him around

GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 7:00 pm

And hopefully the fact that the Brewers had to empty their bullpen works against them.

Mets Fan on Wall St. September 27, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Mike Lamb flies out, Cubs win.

metsforever September 27, 2008 at 6:58 pm

It’s looking a lot like last year. 1 against the Marlins. Win and survive. Lose and you don’t really deserve it.

CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!

Flushing_is_Burning September 27, 2008 at 6:59 pm

yes!!! tied for WC

ManchesterUKMet September 27, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Awesome job by Santanma, and with theBrewers now losing we have a chance to atone for last year – lets go Mets!

Flushing_is_Burning September 27, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Ollie, Mets’ playoff hope is in you capable hand

jammer September 27, 2008 at 7:02 pm

any word on whether ramirez , lee and soriano will sit out 2 days in a row tomorrow?

Darth Manuel September 27, 2008 at 7:03 pm

We have our season back!!!!

MetsFan4Decades September 27, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Can it get any more nerve racking than this?

Difference is last year, even though I was hoping against hope – I just had a feeling they would lose that game.

This year, I have absolutely no idea what will happen. We can go one game where we can’t get out of our own way, and the next night score 6 in the first. Just no way to predict this.

oleosmirf September 27, 2008 at 7:17 pm

especially with oliver on the mound…he can be brilliant or awful

fishmanj September 27, 2008 at 7:23 pm

I have a terrible feeling of foreboding with Ollie on the mound. He has been terrible in September.

JINBK September 27, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Truly one of the all time great performances today by anybody whose ever worn a Mets uniform.

Don’t get me wrong, Johnny Maine’s start last year was up there as well. And like Maine’s game, how this one is remembered as well will depend largely on tomorrow.

LETS GO METS!

Metsman2879 September 27, 2008 at 11:16 pm

god i threw up at this game and got the boot in the fifth

nyj0126 September 27, 2008 at 11:41 pm

What a game. I didn’t see it. I heard some of it. It truly was a great performance by Johan Santana. This game proved to be that Johan Santana is by far the most valuable Met. If the Mets do somehow make the playoffs, he really should enter the Cy Young discussion.

nyj0126 September 27, 2008 at 11:43 pm

He has 34 starts, the best ERA in baseball and 234 innings.

nyj0126 September 27, 2008 at 11:56 pm

And 206 K’s.

nyj0126 September 27, 2008 at 11:48 pm

I hate to be pessimistic, but I believe it’s necessary.

Here is what the Mets should do. If there is any way they can, pretend they loss yesterday. After that Monday loss, they won Tuesday. After the Wednesday loss, they won Thursday. After the Friday loss, they won Saturday. If they don’t have that do or die approach from the first to the last pitch of the game – both pitching and hitting, they won’t win the game tomorrow.

We need things to go our way. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t mind just having that Monday game now. Anything that can get us there. What I worry about is Pedro’s so ineffective on 4 days rest and even 5. How is he going to be able to handle 3?

A lot of people try to weight the pro’s and con’s of using Pedro Martinez vs another pitcher. This is based on normal rest. You can’t go with Jon Niese. He’s not an option. The Brewers ate him up. So did the Cubs. Brandon Knight might be though. That’s still a ways away though.

nyj0126 September 27, 2008 at 11:51 pm

The same way how people were on their feet and how this team was alert the entire game has to be this game too. Major things need to happen tomorrow.

Rule One: Do not give up a run in the 1st inning. If they do, it can very easily end in a loss. Especially if it’s multiple runs. Not just can you not have a Tom Glavine type outing like the last day of last season, but Oliver has to be solid and start the game out right.

Oliver can not walk people. It’s hard to have a short leash on a team with a horrendous bullpen, but it will be necessary if he doesn’t hold it together. I do believe it’s possible he’ll give us that big start he’s known for giving. He didn’t the last time, but if he wants to add like 6 to 8 MM on his contract from who ever it is, this start can decide that. He’ll be ready.

nyj0126 September 27, 2008 at 11:54 pm

Ollie going out there may seem like more of a coin flip more than his post-June/pre-September mode. But I believe if you’re going to flip a coin tomorrow, it’ll land on the side that is ours.

Something tells me the Brewers will lose tomorrow if the Mets win. Or if the Mets win, the Brewers will lose. If they were smart, they’d probably turn off the scoreboard. These two teams have a way of thriving off of the other not playing well. At least lately that’s been the case. That is why the Mets have to have their command. The Brewers are a streaky team. Sabathia is on short rest (again). The Cubs can jump on him quick. It’s essential the Cubs get out on top of the Brewers even if it’s just a run or two because it can really will decide the momentum in that game.

nyj0126 September 28, 2008 at 12:00 am

I meant to say that if the Mets win, the Brewers will lose and if the Brewers win, the Mets may lose. It’s really a psychological thing in my opinion. Even if it’s not up in the scoreboard, you know the score leaks itself into the dug out at one point or another.

If someone were to flip a coin and say the Mets are in tomorrow or the Brewers are in with 50/50 odds, it may not be such a bad thing with Pedro going out there on Monday. Sort of weird how Ollie’s that 50/50 type pitcher at times too. Realistically though, I think it’d be wise to believe the Brewers will win that game with their ace on the mound. Therefore, the Mets have to win. There is no season left if the Mets do not win tomorrow. You can’t play not to lose, but rather to win.
