Prior to yesterday’s game, Johan Santana told reporters that he would be starting today’s game, on just three days rest, against the Marlins today.
Santana, as quoted by Adam Rubin in the Daily News, said:
“When you’re in a situation like this, it doesn’t really matter…You don’t think about pitches or anything. It’s about winning.”
Jerry Manuel, on the decision to start Santana, said:
“This was his choice. He came in and begged for tomorrow’s game…He said, ‘I’m pitching Saturday.””
Manuel later told reporters that Santana made this statement last Wednesday, just one day after his last start.
David Wright, on Johan Santana:
“I don’t know anything about pitching, but I like Johan. I like our chances, so if there’s one guy I want to have the ball – not only on this team, but in the league – Johan is the guy…I know that expectations are going to be high on him, but him willing to do this after throwing 125 pitches and coming back on short rest it speaks volumes to the kind of teammates and kind character and kind of competitor he is.”
Manuel also acknowledged that Oliver Perez will pitch on three-days rest as well, and start on Sunday.

Well, I think this is where all the “Believe” stuff comes into play. Lets go Mets.
like how johan is willing to step up and try to get this team in the post season. Although i would be disappointed if they dont make it, i wont feel too bad simply bc of where they came from in JUne when Manuel took over.
Lets hope Johan can come out, be effective and the offesne can get the bats going early so we can live to play again on SUnday!
In Johan We Trust!!!
LETS GO METS!!! LETS GO METS!!! LETS GO METS!!!
Well, this is it. If you don’t send up your ace, you’re giving in.
I don’t think the Brewers will sweep the Cubs. Lou will play to win Sunday if they lose today, with two days off after.
It will probably still come down to a play-in game. I think the Mets split and Brewers lose both and they both back into that game, but no matter how it happens, Pedro has one more game in him. All hands on deck. Big Pelf for two innings. Johan may even have to throw an inning on his throw day to close it out.
was thinking the same thing ride.. while its out of our control, its highly unlikely the cubs will end the season on a 4 game skid.. We take sat and sunday, we should get a monday game at shea,,
It will feel a heck of a lot better if that happens today, so tomorrow is win and in (and maybe even without the play-in)
It’s not impossible for us to pick the game back up today, altho I think the Cubbies are resting their guys.
Haven’t we been thru enough that we don’t deserve to watch Ayala save it tomorrow with the scoreboard showing the Brewres down in the 8th, and everyone scoreboard watches with nothing to lose? The the F goes up for final at the same time Doc walks out. OK, I’m dreaming.
What’s the deal on the weather? It looks to be godawful, and not sure they can get the game in. Would it be better to have Johan go on normal rest, or try to play and WIN today, and put some pressure on the Brewers?
Johan has to pitch today. You have to keep hope alive into tomorrow, and put that pressure on the Brewers. If the Mets lost today, Brewers would play loose and it could be the difference. If the Mets win and the Brewers press, we can pick the game up and tomorrow’s game matters.
My point being that the Brewers play 3 hours later today, weather permitting….
well, they have a roof.
what? if the mets lose and brewers win today, it’s over! you can’t think about putting pressure, you have to do everything you can not to lose today!!!
Ricky Nolasco has been a STUD this year. If we score 2-3 runs against him, we’ll be lucky.
at least someone on this team has a pair of balls
Regardless of today’s outcome, I don’t want to hear any Mets fans say Santana hasn’t been an ace or step up in a must win game. Going on 3 days rest against a pesky team after throwing 125 pitches is taking one for the team. Too bad we don’t have more guys on the roster like him.
i agree. you can’t say anything negative about him. he’s been tremendous. if we had a bullpen, he’d easily have 20 wins.
r u outta ur mind ollie on the last game we better be prayin oh lord ollie perez isnt a bad pitcher dont get me wrong but hes a shaky as a mother fuker especailly 2 BAD TEAMS oh man but hey if ollie can pull it off its worth it but everybody please pray the cubs beat up the brews these 2 games come on pussies stop backing out and start being the real fans that u claim u are LETS GO METS!!!!!!!
Ollie loves the big stage though, he pitches great against the Phils and the Yankees he loves the spotlight on him I expect him to throw a great game tommrow
actually, i think the cubs are going to mail it in these next two games. who would you rather play, the mets or the dodgers in a short series?
I’ve been reading that most of the other NL playoff teams would rather play the Mets than anyone else, seeing as we have a bullpen that’s “bleeping brutal”.
well, if that’s the case, you’d expect the cubs to be playing very hard right now.
I like that Perez is pitching again simply because his last 2 starts we’re awful and left me with concerns for resigning him, We need to see him on the mound one last time to ultimately make our decision!
