Quote: That was gangsta
By Ted Berg - Sep 27, 2008 6:27 pm

I wrote a column today on SNY.tv about Johan Santana’s start and Santana’s case for the Cy Young Award, which you’re welcome to check out. But I think Jerry Manuel described today’s effort better than I ever could:

“If I had to describe that one, I’d say that was gangsta. That’s gangsta. That was gangsta right there.”

No arguments here.

anybody getting excited (about imitating a low life scumbag whose only contribution to society is selling drugs and killing other low lifes) – is a moron. I’m sure the Mets organization wants all its fans coming out in billy jeans, hats worn sideways, their colors, etc… I cant wait to shell out a few hundred bucks to attend a game and watch all the tough guys pretend they’re ghetto boys….

  2. techwonV27 says:

Theriot is a fiesty gritty player… Kind of player that the METS don’t have….. LETS GO CUBBIES>….

i was there today, and Johan was the most gangsta thing I’ve ever seen.

FUUUUUUK UUUU DOOOOOOOMEEEE CHA CHA CHACHACHA

  5. domosnacks5 says:

    Phils clinch ugh.

  6. backinbusiness says:

I really thought Zimmerman was gonna get it done.

David should punch his old buddy in the face :)

  7. Nate W. says:

it was the run that the Nats let the Phillies get right back in the 8th. Thats the one that stings. Otherwise the Nats find a way to win that game…

  8. mr.gee21 says:

Did I just hear the morons on Fox list off Cy Young candidates, mention Lidge, and not even mention Johan? Tell me I misheard them…

  9. ridethesnake says:

    Johan will get MVG

  10. domosnacks5 says:

    Hey Lou,

Please play some real hitters tomorrow. Miraculously your B lineup still put up 7. Tomorrow, for the integrity of the game, play your studs. Do it for America.

    Signed,

    America

    • ridethesnake says:

He was always planning to start his A lineup — which is all righties — vs CC tomorrow. That’s why they all sat today.

  11. Andrew says:

Hey Ted — Santana was great today, no lie, and he’s had a great year, but to say that he’s having a career year, well, no. Since he became a full-time starter (2004 on), in no season has he had a worse WHIP, K rate, walk rate, or opposing batting average.

He is posting the best ERA of his career, and runs allowed are what it all comes down to in the end, but I wouldn’t call this his career year.

    • CaseStreet says:

You contradict yourself. If runs allowed are all it comes down to, and Santana is posting the best ERA of his career, then why isn’t this his career year?

      • MetsFan1976 says:

Well, I don’t think it matters if this is Johan’s career year, because it is a great year regardless (though I *don’t* think it’s his career year). Still, a pitcher who has a worse WHIP, K rate, BB rate, and BAA, while also having a lower ERA, typically got luckier than in past years.

That being said, Johan’s a stud. Just because he may have had some luck, doesn’t mean he needs it!

    • Ted Berg says:

That’s fair, his peripherals are down and I was definitely being a bit hyperbolic in the post-shutout excitement, but to defend the point:
      1) As you said, the results are the most important part, and no matter how he got there, Santana pitched the most innings of his career with the lowest ERA.
      2) Technically I said “a career year in a career of career years,” which I think tempers it a bit.
      3) This is a bit more abstract, but I wonder if the flux in his peripherals has anything to do with adjusting to a new league and/or adjusting to getting a bit older. He might have had to nibble a bit more in the beginning of the season the first few times he faced hitters he hadn’t seen before to get a better read on them, which could account for the higher walk rates and WHIP. That’s far from scientific, but a guess to an explanation. In his last 11 starts, he’s struck out just about a batter an inning — not quite where he usually is, but pretty close.

      • DavidDog says:

perhaps it’s just my paranoid metstality, but i also honestly think mets pitchers get squeezed by homeplate umps more than any team in MLB. i think a generally tighter NYC/NL strikezone may be accountable for +hits, -Ks, togetehr with the slight drop in velocity

      • Nate W. says:

The lower ERA in the NL this year verses the AL in years past should be taken into account as well.

  12. dcrockett17 says:

    cubs win! cubs win!

unfortunately, phils clinch. bastards. you’re dead to me nationals. dead.

  13. SPR says:

    Cubbies lose!!!

Tomorrow is the biggest game of the season. Step up, Zambrano!

  14. metsflip says:

Although I’m only 14, that was the most clutch pitching performance I have ever seen

  15. techwonV27 says:

CC PITCHING ON 3 DAYS REST FOR LIKE 3 STRAIGHT TIMES IS JUST RIDICULOUS….. IF THE METS WIN AND BREWERS WIN WHERE DOES ONE GAME PLAYOFF PLAY AT???

    • GregB says:

      At Shea on Monday.

And, yes, the Brewers are riding CC like a rented mule. I’m not sure I’d want to be the team renting him next.

      • techwonV27 says:

That’s awesome bro…. Hopefully it won’t come to that if the METS win and the Brew Crew lose tomorrow… Zambrano is pretty filthy and has pride and won’t lay an egg hopefully….. LETS GO METS>>>>>>>>

      • metsforever says:

That would be the New York Yankees. That will be the highest bid anyway. I think that is a guarantee. you have to believe that the Yankees regret not sending Hughes and Kennedy for Santana right about now. They won’t make that mistake again with Sabathia

    • backinbusiness says:

      shea monday, time TBA

  16. techwonV27 says:

I BET THE METS WERE ALL GLUED TO THE TV AND SCREAMED LIKE GANGSTERS WHEN FUKUDOME HIT THE 2 RUN HOMERUN IN THE 8TH…….. SOME PROBABLY SCREAMED LIKE LADIES…. LOL…. LETS GO METS…..

    • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

ok, enough with the caps. we understand what you’re saying is very important, but it’s pretty annoying

  17. magic00700magic says:

Okay, just like last year on the second to last day of the season, we won, the team we were chasing lost and we once again controlled our destiney.

This time we have Ollie instead of Glavine. Will we score this time? Last time we scored double digits in the second to last game, but then sputtered on offense. This year we have sputtered on offense the last two games going in. What will we do against Olsen?

Lets hope we have a better offense plan than today.

    Go Mets.

    • ridethesnake says:

Which was better — Maine 2007 or Johan 2008

      • domosnacks5 says:

On 3 days rest, finishing the game? Sorry Johnny, gotta give it to Johan.

Of course, the recency effect is very high here, but I gotta give it to Maine.

      • Bacci says:

Would’ve been Main if not for the 3 foot base hit. I met him earlier that year and told him he’d be the first Met pitcher to pitch a no-hitter. I hope I didn’t blow it for him.

        • Two-By-Four says:

Some how I’m sure he didn’t think about you when pitching that game. But what the hell do I know?

      • metslover5 says:

Johan because Johan’s 1st half was as good as Maine’s first half but Maine didn’t show up in the second half except for his las outing….

        • ridethesnake says:

Wouldn’t that mean Maine’s was more impressive? I was talking about the game itself.

I give it to Johan cause Maine had 13 runs of support.

        • wheres.the.magic.number says:

on the other hand Maine was basically a 1st or 2nd yr player trying to establish himself. You would think under those circumstances, the pressure would have been more difficult to overcome. Johan had what roughly 100 wins when he did his thing. Granted, coming off 3 days rest two starts in a row is very very impressive even for a guy widely considered to be one of the top 2 or 3 pitchers in the game.

  18. GregB says:

Once again, the Mets are in control of their postseason hopes.

Maybe, just maybe, this time they’ll wake up and seize the moment.

  19. techwonV27 says:

THE Mets better show up tomorrow pumped up… This is equivalent to game 7 of the WS… If they lay an egg major heads better role on this team… Redemption for all METS players will be on the line tomorrow…

  20. backinbusiness says:

Don’t forget the Mets can also get into the 1 game playoff by losing, provided the Brewers also lose.

I don’t think my heart can handle that.

By the way, last year I bought tickets to the Mets-Phillies 1 game playoff at CBP (whole lotta good that did), and it went on sale the equivalent of tomorrow morning, online.

  21. IA062008 says:

Guys this is the same thing as last yr. We lost the 1st game and the other team won. Sat we won on great pitching.(Maine 1 hitter, Johan 3 hitter). We all know what happen sunday. Just thank that Tom Glavine is not on the team.

  22. danlx13 says:

    my predictions…..
    ollie 7 .1 IP, 1 run (solo hr), 9 k, 3 BB, WIN
bullpen gives up 2 mets win 6-3

    CC 7 IP, 2 runs, 8 K, 1 BB, Win
    Brewers win 5-3

    Playoff
    Pedro 3 IP, 4 runs (3 in 1st inning) 5 K, ND
but mets win 9-8 in 10th inning
(and delgado hits 3 hrs in a game at Shea)

  23. X-Man says:

Exactly. I don’t know, but my hunch is that OP will give us a much better effort than Glavine gave us last year. Can’t do any worse, that’s for sure.

Very exciting send-off to Shea shaping up for tomorrow, wish I could be there.

  24. danlx13 says:

why is zambrano pitching tomorrow?? unless i saw something wrong and hes not

  25. cousinrk says:

Ollie’s got a lot of money on the line with this start and his big pitcher status as well. Its time for a real big time performance. I gotta think third time on 3 days rest won’t be the charm for CC as well. I just feel like there might be a window for us to get it done tomorrow

  26. cousinrk says:

Umm…someone want to tell Ted Berg that Johan leads the lead in ERA not LIncecum.

  27. X-Man says:

There are basically 4 possible scenarios for tomorrow:

    1. Mets win, Brewers Win = playoff game Monday

    2. Mets lose, Brewers Lose = playoff game Monday

    3. Mets win, Brewers lose = Mets win WC

    4. Mets lose, Brewers win, = Mets go home.

as you can see, 3 in 4 chance of at least playing another game at Shea. Only scenario # 4 will doom the Mets. I’ll take those odds.

  28. MetsFan1976 says:

Anybody know if anything is going on at the stadium *before* tomorrow’s game? For example, will the fans have a chance to line up and watch the old-timers come in? If so, when and where?

  29. freshprince07 says:

Jerry Manuel is THE MAN =]

  30. Johan The Ace says:

Id be shocked if D Ease was not in there tomorrow

  31. smm140 says:

    Two things, Ted.

    1) Santana had nine strikeouts, not seven

    2) Santana was the leader in NL ERA prior to this start, not Lincecum. Of course, his lead only increased after today.

  32. Two-By-Four says:

Santana hoisted this team on his back and carried them in this ball game. Great performance.

  33. Nate W. says:

As Mets fans we have it bad with the collapse and the poorly timed team slump this year.

But that in hades are the White Sox and Twins doing? How pathetic is that ‘penant race’ looking?

  34. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

well the cubs are starting a no name coming off elbow surgery tomorrow. looks like our best bet is a play in game with pedro pitching ugh.

  35. pattisonave says:

Your pitcher performed very admirably today. Too bad so many of his team mates didn’t match his heart over the last couple of weeks. Many of you thought the Santana trade guaranteed the Mutts the East. Guess it takes more than one (admittedly excellent) starter to overtake “The Little Red Engine That Could.”

It’s interesting that so many of you think the Philies will be swept in a series with the Dodgers. I’m not sure how we’ll do… much will depend on which Bret Myers shows up to pitch. However, we will be playing the Milwaukee Brewers, The Mutts will once again be playing golf.

PS – Regards from all of us here in Philly to our old pal Billy The Rat. We all miss him, especially Pat The Bat.

  36. OrangEandBlue says:

I am just feeling Mets versus Phils in the 2008 NLCS. Oh wouldn’t that just be spectacular?

    Lets Go Mets.
